3 I send greetings to those gathered for the 2006 Winter Guard International Color Guard World Championships and Percussion World Championships. For more than a quarter century, Winter Guard International has brought young people from around the world together to showcase their talents and foster goodwill. The Championships advance arts appreciation and education and help teach competitors the importance of teamwork and discipline. I congratulate performers for working hard to reach this level of competition, and I encourage you to continue to share your gifts. I also commend your families, teachers, and coaches for their guidance and support. You efforts strengthen the creative spirit of our Nation. Laura and I send our best wishes.

The Executive Director of WGI Sport of the Arts

April 20, 2006 It is with particular pride that I welcome all the performers, instructors, boosters, and fans gathered once again for one of the premier pageantry events in the world: the WGI Percussion World Championships. It is truly a wonder to watch thousands of performers knowing that each has an individual story that brings them to this moment. The struggle to master a particular skill or overcome performance nerves can be a metamorphosis in a person’s development. While we see the end result only the individual knows the road it took to get here. That deserves an outpouring of appreciation from all of us privileged to witness the culmination of their efforts. All this vitality would not be possible without support. Our sponsors play a major role in shaping our organization and this event. Our judges and volunteers are unsung heroes putting in long hours, traveling great distances, and dedicating themselves towards providing an “experience” for all our performers. You have my eternal thanks and respect. As WGI heads into its’ thirtieth anniversary, the future remains bright. We all leave this weekend treasuring the moments that made 2006 and looking towards even higher goals as we enter the next decade.

Welcome to Dayton

Over the last several years, it has been my sincere honor to produce numerous articles for Winter Guard International, a privilege that has allowed me to meet and write about so many fascinating people. From brilliant designers and instructors — many of whom have been around WGI since its humble beginnings in the 70’s — to enthusiastic young performers experiencing the thrill of Championships for the first time, I never cease to be amazed by the colorful spectrum of delightful, inspiring, challenging, and often hysterical personalities which our activity seems to attract. Whether I marched or taught with them, stood in front of them as an instructor, or have written an article about them, I find it impossible to walk more than a few feet in the University of Dayton arena and not run into someone I know. I’d like to say this happens because I’m the most popular person here, but that's certainly not the case! The fact is that most everyone here is having a very similar experience. One of my favorite things to do during Championships weekend is to walk around the arena and observe people. I always see throngs of attendees laughing, smiling, hugging and sometimes even crying. From the parking lot to the souvenir area, and the warm-up tent to the concession stands, everywhere you look, people seem to be running into old friends. Excited shrieks of glee can be heard, as people stop and get caught up on what is going on in each other’s lives. With this many people in attendance, no wonder it sometimes takes so long to get from your seat to the restroom! Of course, many of us return to Championships to witness the next generation of young performers, reveling in the glory of a job well done. Some of us come to see what innovative,

entertaining and thoughtprovoking productions our activity’s designers will pull out of their creative hats. (And, much to the chagrin of our fellow audience members, offer our “unbiased” opinions on their efforts!) However, having walked many, many “laps” around the U.D. Arena over the years, I've come to believe that a large majority of attendees travel to Championships mainly to reconnect with cherished friends. I was recently looking through my file of WGI articles and came across this quote, which ran in the 2003 Championships program. “In tentative and isolating times, it is grounding to embrace an art form that is fundamentally based on collaboration… Performing is an act of craft, courage and continuity that is ultimately reassuring both to those who practice it and to those who appreciate it.” Playwright Wendy Wasserstein, New York Times The last three years have been tumultuous ones for the human race. In 2003, it was unclear what our nation’s role in the Middle East would be, and sadly, the extraordinary playwright

Wendy Wasserstein recently 11 passed away at the age of 55, after a courageous battle with cancer. And although Wasserstein probably never heard of winter guard or indoor percussion, I think her quote perfectly captures the spirit and soul of our activity, beautifully encapsulating what draws us all back to each other, year after year. Yes, the world has changed significantly since 1977, when six friends gathered around a table to form Winter Guard International. But whether this is your first trip to World Championships or your twentieth (like mine!), isn’t it comforting to find that “our” world hasn't really changed all that much? Indeed, the bonds of friendship formed through winter guard and indoor percussion are unlike any others in the world. This weekend, take a moment to look around at the people in this arena... How lucky are we to have found this activity? And each other!

WGI (Winter Guard International) Sport of the Arts is a non-profit umbrella organization guiding the competitive development of the winter guard and indoor percussion activities. WGI is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of representatives from all geographic areas of the country and representatives of the top winter guards and indoor percussion ensembles in the world. WGI exists to foster positive experiences for all who participate, by promoting education, creativity, and freedom of expression through

the unification of pageantry and the performing arts. WGI has chosen competition as its method for organizing youth activities in pursuit of high standards of achievement. This three-day Championship event will showcase over 310 winter guards and 170 percussion ensembles from over 30 states and three countries. Students prepare for this event by competing in one of 24 Regional

winter guard and percussion contests across the country and Europe. This year WGI celebrates its 29th year hosting winter guard competitions and the 14th year for hosting percussion competitions. The “Sport of the Arts” offers a unique blend of artistry and athleticism and is the leader in the pageantry and performing arts community.

Color Guard Judges

WGI Color Guard Judges undergo a rigorous training program including an extensive period of trial judging. Judges applying for WGI approval must complete a home study process, the Judges’ Academy, trialing on guards in every class, and participate in a continuing education program that encompasses annual study requirements and clinics. The judging community is a body of professionals who have come from the activity and are now working to perpetuate the unique experience WGI Sport of the Arts offers. Many are trained in dance and theatre and bring that knowledge to the performers. Many are educators and professionals who share a common understanding of the gigantic role the pageantry arts played in their own lives. These judges endeavor to offer a quality experience to the thousands of young people who grace our stage and give us their best.

The Judgin g

The qualities that WGI judges measure for color guard are divided into four areas or captions: General Effect, Ensemble Analysis, Individual Analysis of Equipment and Individual Analysis of Movement. Each total score is out of a possible 100 points. 16 At World Championships, the guards are judged by a double panel to assure the fairest and broadest evaluation possible. Individual Analysis of Equipment (IA) 20 points Equipment judges analyze the range and depth of the choreographic efforts of the flags, rifle, sabers or other props being manipulated. Equipment judges will also analyze

the training, excellence and achievement of the performers in comparison to multiple responsibilities being asked of the performer. Individual Analysis of Movement (IA) 20 points Movement judges analyze the range and depth of the movement vocabulary while spinning equipment and while strictly dancing. Special consideration is made regarding the training, excellence, and achievement of the performers, as well as the uniformity from performer to performer. Ensemble Analysis (EA) 20 points Ensemble judges analyze the quality of the design, and the

depth of the composition of the program as a whole. Special consideration is given to the technical and expressive excellence demonstrated by the performers. A close look is given to each moment in time. General Effect (GE) 40 points General Effect judges reward the plan of events or effects. Effects can be intellectual, (thought provoking, complex in design, literal to musical interpretation) emotional (adrenaline, broad range of human emotions), or aesthetic (color, shape, artistic). This caption is about the whole package and is brought to life through the performer.

The Judging System

The WGI Percussion judging community is a body of professionals including some of the most honored and respected percussionists in the world. These individuals bring their knowledge and passion for music to the performers. Many are educators and professionals who share a common understanding of the gigantic role the pageantry arts played in their own lives. These judges endeavor to offer a quality experience to the thousands of young people who grace our stage and give us their best. Some of the WGI Percussion Visual Judges have come from the color guard or drum corps activity and are now working to perpetuate the unique experience WGI Sport of the Arts offers.

System Marchin g Criteria

Marching percussion groups are judged in three captions: General Effect 40 points Percussion General Effect judges are evaluating two specific things during a performance: Music Effect (communication, creativity, blend and balance, expression) and Overall Effect (communication, audio/visual coordination, pacing through time, imagination/creativity, entertainment). Concert Percussion are judged in two captions: Artistry 50 points Here an intense look is given to the program and the fulfillment of those programmatic choices. Here com17 munication, musicianship, presence, and expression make up a few of the components being evaluated. Performance 50 points Here the judge listens with a critical ear for the clarity of the intent of the composition, while considering performance qualities including musicianship, quality of sound, and technical excellence.

Cosmo “Gus” Barbaro Edinboro, PA Gus was a key member of the initial percussion management team. He served as the first Percussion Educational Director from 1993 until 1996 when he became Percussion Coordinator. As Educational Director, Gus was responsible for gathering all the percussion judging criteria available at the time and compiling it into what has served as the foundation for the successful percussion judging system used today.

Scott Chandler Walnut Creek, CA

medals in 1991, 1992 and 1998. They both served on the WGI Board of Directors for 21 years and served on the WGI Task Force where they worked tirelessly to push the boundaries of color guard.

Scott has created an amazing span of talent and contribution to this activity. His work with James Logan High School, Blue Devils, State Street Review, Tate Chaparrals, to name a few, are examples of his passionate approach to pageantry.

Dennis DeLucia Little Silver, NJ Dennis DeLucia is one of the most respected percussion teachers, arrangers, clinicians and judges in the United States. A member of the WGI Percussion judging community since 1995, Dennis has enthusiastically brought his years of pageantry experience and wisdom to the indoor competitive arena, serving as a benchmark as well as “devil’s advocate” to the ever changing environment of adjudication.

Mark Thurston Limerick, PA Mark joined WGI Percussion in 1996 as a judge, and then served as the Educational Director in 1997-1998. He became Percussion Coordinator in 1999 (a position he still holds) and has been the guiding force behind the exceptional growth of the indoor percussion activity ever since.

Karl Lowe San Diego, CA The premise of innovation, imagination, quality and risk are only a few words that apply to the unparalleled contributions he has made to WGI. Karl has brought us program concepts that have awakened awareness in our minds. From Odyssey to Fantasia he has been intense in his approach to his programs as well as his respect for his competitors.

New England’s Regional Director since the inception of WGI, Harry continues his commitment to the development of WGI. A specialist in timing and penalties, he is a resource for units and other regional directors.

Through his work with units such as Skylarks, Blessed Sacrament, Genesis II, Choctawhatchee and Tate, Jeff has continued to set new artistic standards year after year. His imaginative designs have spanned two decades and reached all three classes of competition. Jeff was also a major contributor to the development of the World Championship yearbook. He has served five terms on the WGI Task Force.

George Lindstrom Arvada, CO

The expansion and growth of WGI is directly due to the vision of this man who is responsible for the creation of both the Percussion and Marching Band divisions. George served as Contest Manager for the World Championships, strategic planning consultant and tireless volunteer.

Vincent Monacelli Rochester, NY A builder of champions, this innovative designer was pivotal in uniting the East and West when WGI was founded. Director of such color guards as Holley Hawks and Bishop Kearney, Vinnie created unique shows that are still benchmarks of performance excellence.

Mickey Kelly Madison, CT Under his direction, the Skylarks were one of the most creative units in the history of WGI. Mickey also served as Judge Coordinator, bringing standards, accountability and quality to the adjudication. Wayne Wengert Berthoud, CO Our organization was incredibly impacted by technological advancements brought by Wayne. His computer expertise, linked offices in 4 states, created the original WGI web page and designed the tabulation programs that are still in use today. Dolores Zappala Wakefield, MA President of the Board of Directors for more than a decade, Dolores spearheaded WGI through its’ critical growing years as an organization. As director of Blessed Sacrament, she leaves a legacy that thrives to this day.

Sal & LuAnne Salas

Madison, WI Leaders in innovative design and authors of the grand production within color guard, Sal and LuAnne created the State Street Review and moved the activity into a new level of entertainment. Their legacy survives today as their many alumni now instruct their own units.

George Oliviero Walnut Creek, CA

George has an unparalleled history of service training judges. George served as the WGI Assistant Director of Education where he helped many judges enter the WGI judging arena. George has been extremely active on the Task Force, serving as a Facilitator in Movement and EA throughout the years. George is a mentor to many, a gentleman to all and is always willing to volunteer his time and energy to WGI and excellence in adjudication.

Mark & Mike Miller Dayton, OH Mark and Mike Miller were born into the world of pageantry. After aging out of the Miller’s Blackhawks, they continued to teach until the Blackhawks organization was retired in 1990. Mark and Mike also instructed the Miamisburg High School Winter Guard from 1980-2002 winning Scholastic World gold

Denise Bonfiglio Revere, MA Denise served on the task force for nearly ten years while mentoring young instructors who have graduated from her color guards, including Emerald Marquis. Denise was also responsible for the 27th Lancers whose impact opened the door for small guards within the World Class.

Marie Czapinski Chicago, IL Marie is an original founder of WGI and served as Chief Judge in the early years of the organization. She was instrumental in the development of WGI in the early 1980’s and has a long and successful history of judge development within the Midwest. Ward Durrett Estes Park, CO Ward is considered by many to be a Founding Father of indoor percussion. He was pivotal in the development of the Percussion Division within WGI serving as Chief Percussion Judge for several years. His vision helped define the standards within this division.

Mary Denniston Sayreville, NJ An adjudication leader for more than 30 years, Mary’s integrity and commitment to the performers has set her apart. She served on the WGI Task Force for a number of years and continues to offer a wealth of information to guards, beginning judges, and pageantry as a whole. Mary passed away in 2004. Fred J. Miller Dayton, OH Founder of the Miller’s Blackhawks, Fred is considered a master showman of color guard. He served as WGI Financial Director for a number of years and contributed to our growth through his expertise as unit director, local circuit administrator, and enthusiastic advocate.

Jay Murphy Walnut Creek, CA Through his shows with St. Anthony’s Imperiales, Blue Devils, San Jose Raiders, Clovis West High School, and other units, Jay’s approach to color guard marks him as the paradigm which has defined the standards of design and creativity.

Stanley Knaub Seattle, WA Stanley was responsible for securing the funding and organizing the meeting that ultimately founded WGI. He revolutionized the activity with the addition of dance to color guard. Stanley passed away in 2002.

Lynn Lindstrom Arvada, CO As Executive Director, Lynn was instrumental in nurturing the explosive growth of color guard from 30 guards in 1978 to over 300 participating at the point when she retired in 2001. She led WGI’s expansion into percussion ensemble and marching band competitions. Shirlee Whitcomb Walnut Creek, CA Shirlee and others who founded the organization in 1977 shared the vision of WGI. Her contributions over the past 22 years as Education Director have included the education initiatives for instructors and judges that are unparalleled in the pageantry activity.

WGI recognizes the young performers of our activity who pursue academic excellence. All WGI Scholarships groups who participate in the World Championships are invited to submit one applicant from their unit who is a high school senior or already enrolled in college. A committee of volunteers, instructors, and judges review dozens of applications for Through the 50/50 raffle and the these awards and select students who stand out in qualities of purchase of this program book, you, the academic, artistic, and personal standards. patrons of WGI, remain a major source of revenue for the scholarships awarded.
