T he Executive Director of WGI Sport of the Arts

April 12, 2007 Once again it is my pleasure to greet everyone gathered in Dayton for the 2007 WGI Color Guard World Championships. This year is our 30th anniversary and the future of WGI remains bright with the promise of all our performers bring to our organization. As they strive to reach new heights, WGI is also achieving new milestones. For the first time in our history, a state-of-the-art webcast will bring our community together for those who cannot join us in Dayton for this happy celebration. Participation in activities like WGI enhance the lives of our performers while motivating them to achieve their life goals. As you read this, the end of the 2007 season is a few hours away. Countless hours of dedication will culminate in a brief moment under the lights and our collective recognition, regardless of score, should be waves of thunderous applause for the gift these performers offer. I encourage you to give them a moment they will always treasure. We come to Dayton for the 21st time in our history and anniversaries always makes one reflect on a wealth of memories stored at UD Arena or Nutter Center. Some of us have spent over half our lives making the annual pilgrimage to the home of all things winter. Unless you’ve done it, nothing can really capture that feeling of when you come down the tunnel or through the curtain onto the floor. It’s akin to the Wizard of Oz after the tornado. John F. Kennedy once said that the definition of happiness was “the full use of your powers along lines of excellence”. If that is so, then Disneyland has some stiff competition this weekend from Dayton as the happiest place on earth. At least in my mind, there is no contest. Best wishes and thank you for supporting the “Sport of the Arts”!

WGI at 3o!

By Richard Berthelsen

Each championship year is special in its own way and yet brings back memories of all those that have gone before. This year, as we celebrate the 30th WGI World Championships we also reflect on just how far we have travelled since that very first competition at Conant High School in Chicago. Could anyone there have imagined a massive event with 487 groups in 14 percussion and color guard classes on two weekends in Dayton incorporating both music and motion?

which might be interpreted differently from one day to the next.

Then, as now, Championships were a potpourri of color, youth, competitive enthusiasm, nerves and the sheer joy of performing for peers and the audience. And while there were many visionary people involved in the first years, few would have been bold enough to anticipate competitions that were held in large arenas like UD with props, scenery, a designer floor and costumes, not uniforms. No one would have believed that contests in several future years would result in a tie for first place (3 times in world class alone). Or that we would have more high schools than ever and equally value their contribution with groups that are independent. And who would have forseen percussion as an event on its own indoors rather than just with marching bands or drum corps? These developments were all only imaginary as those first guards took the floor for competition.

For those old enough to remember, the inaugural championship was a momentous event—more for the opportunity to be together on our own for the very first time. Prior to 1978 guards competed as part of other events, and only WGI provided the first occasion when everyone competed with the rules and judging system we had agreed to by consensus—no easy task! It was still a few years before it became fully evident that we didn’t all agree on what the words meant or what was valued. At the first WGI, the guards were all independent, competing in one class, and comprised of only girls (except for The Cavaliers, The Kilties, and State Street). The event itself was in a crowded gymnasium which today would seem more like a Saturday night local show much less the epic weekends we have come to associate with World Championships.

In the times in which we live, change is a constant and WGI experiences that as much as any activity. Each year since 1978 has brought innovation to our creative approach and what we once saw as unthinkable is topped each and every year. We have been enriched by the participation of groups from other countries and continents and influenced by the music, art, dance, theatre, the media and issues of our time. Each championship has brought with it something new, something bigger and something to get excited about all over again.

For many of the first years, color guards from different areas of the country saw each other as exotic creatures who reflected their own regions. You could spot a guard from New England not just by their accents but from their approach to their equipment (or carriage as they referred to it) and they usually represented some Saint or another. Midwest groups were unmatched in their marching execution (it wasn’t movement then), and were usually associated with a drum corps. And west coast groups were experimenting with dance and usually were drawn from whole cities rather than churches or drum corps. They invariably provoked controversy and many asked “Is this really color guard?” Who could forget that best of all, in those days, the timing judge often decided the contest and ensured that no one went home without a penalty—usually for some flag code infraction around the National Colors, a dropped piece of equipment or some timing deficiency

WGI 2007 will be no different. While we might take time to smile at how advanced we thought we were in any of the previous thirty championships and the state of our art, we know that the young people and designers will push the envelope once again each year. In doing so, they honor the spirit and enduring values of our founders and that which has never changed about WGI. Championships brings together thousands of young people who are at the peak of their training and commitment in the pursuit of excellence and innovation with the support of parents and fans in the finale to the competitive season while the judges try to make sense of it all. WGI at 30—much to remember and many more memories to come!

Hall of Fame HALL OF FAME

Hall of Fame The Hall of Fame is the highest honor to those individuals who make a significant contribution to WGI, and who have in some way influenced the course of our history . Their contribution may be made through artistic standards, administrative leadership or adjudication . Winter Guard International Sport of the Arts, is proud to announce the election of Michael Gaines and Randy Nelson to the WGI Hall of Fame. They join the other twenty-six distinguished honorees listed below.

Randy is the Director of Bands at Choctawhatchee High School. Choctawhatchee’s influence began when the color guard became a finalist in 1984 for the first time and continues to this day. Throughout the years Randy’s beloved “Choctaw” produced landmark shows of the scholastic class. The years 1990 through 1992 saw consecutive silver medals and enshrined Choctawhatchee in color guard history with shows such as “Spanish Fantasy”, “Deedles” and the classic “Velveteen Rabbit.” In 1990 and 1991 Choctawhatchee broke new ground by having not one, but two World Class high school finalists setting the educational paradigm of having two color guards used by many high schools today.

Michael Gaines

Michael Gaines San Francisco, California

In 1992 Michael Gaines created Escapade which originally was only to compete for one year as a way for “a group of friends to march together one last time.” Instead, that very popular color guard competed four years culminating in a second place finish in 1995.

Known for his ability to design shows that appeal to the crowd, his work with Center Grove HS, Centerville HS, Choctawhatchee HS, Kennesaw Mountain HS, Miamisburg HS, and Pope HS have created some of the most memorable shows in the scholastic class. In 1997 Michael began his wildly successful association with Pride of Cincinnati. Michael has also been a force internationally as well through his work with Aimachi from Nagoya, Japan. Michael’s contributions to WGI are not limited to the creative aspect. He has served tirelessly on the Board of Directors as Vice President as well as the Task Force/Steering Committee. He spearheaded the debate on lifting the age restriction in the World Class and was an inaugural clinician at Spinfest!! His philosophy of quality of design without sacrificing audience reaction is a message that resonates with newer designers.

Randy’s dominant force in WGI is not limited to his own high school winter guard. His work with numerous Open and A Class guards such as Orange Park HS, Harrison Central HS, JSU Center Stage, University of Alabama as well as Northeast Independent have helped strengthen those classes. He is a valued resource and a counselor for many newer designers and instructors. His vision at Choctawhatchee has also made their percussion ensemble a permanent fixture on the WGI national scene.

In the beginning... as with all things new, the excitement and emotion ran high. Here we were with our own Championship, in a site that was perfect for us, in a time of year that was perfect for us. Perhaps the biggest thrill of all was that there were nearly 30 guards from maybe 8 or 9 states. Every guard watched every other guard in awe of what they could do that was different from themselves and in fear that the difference would determine the outcome of the show. The top 3 guards, Quasar, Phantom, and Imperials were as different from one another and as brilliant as we in color guard could ever hope to see. And so we began a journey we never dreamed would become what it is today. It began with trust, diversity and hope, and was bound together by unlimited passion about the thing we loved. 7 was a very exciting year for WGI. The variety of styles by region was now understood; the Midwest more drill-oriented, the East more equipment-oriented and the West more movement-oriented. While maintaining their own identity, the instructors started to introduce snippets from the other styles into their repertoire and the use of the triad started to emerge. Everyone realized the judging system did not accommodate the variety of styles and the innovation the guards were introducing. We hired a consultant to help us understand different styles of movement and how to teach the judges these tolerances. The WGI Championship was held at Dane County Coliseum on a concrete floor. Some highlights were: Quasar utilizing a “smoke machine and being penalized in prelims and altered for finals; Skylarks music cut out, they kept going and when the music started again they were perfectly on cue, and Phantom Regiment brilliantly performing Pictures At An Exhibition and were named the 1979 Champions.

At Sac we call that the year of the boa! This famous boa almost kept us from making WGI finals! I don’t remember the rule, but apparently we broke it by misplacing a boa and was assessed a two point penalty which put us from 13th to 16th place. The tears on the members faces spurred me into action. I decided to go to the leaders of WGI and plead our case. At that time I didn’t have a clue who the leaders were. Our penalty was removed, and we made finals. My warmest memory of that year was turning around to see Jay Murphy and Debbie Torchia, our competitors, holding their breath as much as we were for the decision. They jumped up and down along with us when we found out the penalty was removed. In 1980 being a board member was quite different from what it is today. The changes have been incredible, on the business as well as the adjudication side. It gives me great pleasure to know that the Blessed Sacrament organization has played a huge part in the history of WGI. By Dolores Zappala

The Cavaliers, Phantom Regiment and Schaumburg Guardsmen all traded victories back and forth for the 1981 season. This was frustrating at times, but forced each group to perform at its peak almost every weekend or end up in third place or lower. As we pulled up in our bus for WGI Championships, the War Memorial in Syracuse seemed huge to us. We didn’t travel much back in the day and the only time we’d see anyone from out east was at the championships. We’d made friends with the girls from the Skylarks. I think we were attracted to them because they had a very laid-back attitude to color guard. We lost prelims to the Phantom Regiment. The guard put on a pretty good show in finals, and ended up winning. The thing that sticks out most in my mind was how wonderfully received the guard was by not only our competition, but also the crowd in the War Memorial. A true testament to class of this activity and something I will never forget. By Rich Kemp

It was the first time in WGI history that Olympics were to be held in the South. In anticipation of the year we (The Skylarks) wanted to keep our personality that was successful in the previous two years but at the same time challenging ourselves to take on a new show. With a very rough start to the season, the infamous Boston Regional came. The season was working out so poorly for us that we were told we might not even make finals in Nashville. I knew our talent was too good, the staff too talented, and the desire to achieve together too strong to not do well. No matter what, we were going to Nashville. And we would be the best we could be. Through hard work and determination, we tied for 2nd at finals with St Joe’s. What a turnaround. This was the first time the Skylarks received a medal but the important thing was that we believed in ourselves and never gave up. By Mickey Kelly

After the 1982 WGI World Championships in Nashville, Tennessee, the WGI Board of Directors met to talk about the World Championships for the next year. At this meeting I made the presentation to bring the Championships to Dayton, Ohio and hold it at the University of Dayton arena. I had made the contact with the Dayton Chamber of Commerce and the University to hold that first weekend in April. I had all the facts and figures and the Board decided to try it for one year. The Board also decided to hold the Annual Convention in Dayton that year, so it would give the instructors and judges an opportunity to see the arena. I’ll never forget the first time that the instructors entered the arena and saw the size. They were amazed! This would be the largest competition arena that had been used up to this date. Needless to say everyone liked the entire set up and that is why Dayton has become the home for the WGI World Championships for so many years. By Fred J Miller

1984

The crossroads of 1984 were a bridge of beginnings and endings for many WGI finalists. The Skylarks were completing a long artistic process that landed them in the heralded top spot. This would be the last year for this highly original guard that made an undeniable contribution to the development of winter guard. While the Skylarks were offering a triumphant goodbye, the State Street Review was saying “hello” with a new competitive approach that would soon be setting the record for Championship wins. State Street made the move into the top 3 and this was the year you could see a new brand of body and equipment with innovative vocabulary and techniques. In the Independent A class, a young, artistic Odyssey was about to catapult into WGI history. Center Grove HS was beginning one of WGI’s most respected journeys but the Scholastic Class also held a guard that would soon redefine the word “effect”…Union HS. By Scott Chandler

1985 produced some wonderful, memorable color guards, and a tie for the gold medal, between State Street and Erté. Wanda Conway recalled Erté being booed at the first show, and how devastated she felt. How hard it was to stay committed to the program idea and convince the members that it was the right choice. Hoping that trying something different was going to be the right choice for the kids. I recalled struggling with the same doubts and fears, always hoping we had made the right choices. The members didn’t seem to mind the tie as much as the staff did. They had been friendly with the members of State Street and some of them went to compete with them the following year. Ties have happened many more times since 1985. State Street tied again the very next year. A tie does not negate the joy and wonder all the color guards of that year brought to the arena. Neither does it negate the creativity, the innovation, or the excellence we all witnessed. The applause was real, the medals are treasured, and the memories will last forever. By Debbie Torchia

1986 changed my life. It was my last year of performance. When we found that George Zingali folded Erté, Billy Jurberg, and Nancy Keefe, and I packed up a station wagon, and drove straight to Madison. State Street Review redefined the word performance. What I thought would be easy turned out to be a test of my character and abilities. Meeting the wonderful people there was like experiencing a whole new energy in the world. Even though the shows were winning, it was the people at SSR who were the most significant part of its life force and its success. The values taught at that guard are ones I will keep in my life forever. It remains a part of my life because of the strength gained by all of the trials and tribulations encountered along the way. From ties, to boos, to incredible performances, it propelled my sense of who I am, and I believe that many people found their way from their experiences at SSR. By Carol Abohatab

I discovered winter guard in 1982 and have been involved in producing shows, every year since, except one. In 1987 I was a spectator, and it changed me. I have always loved movies and songs that inspire me to look inside myself and relate to what the characters are going through or the feelings the singer is expressing. They make me feel connected especially when I feel alone. I had never thought of winter guard this way until I saw Odyssey. Suddenly a winter guard was provoking me to think, and touching my emotions in a way that only comes from someone speaking honestly from their own heart and experience. Their mix of intellect, emotion, and daring set a standard for me. The Odyssey ’87 show inspired me to think outside the box and express myself, not only in our activity, but in my life as well. 1988 was a year of discovery for WGI, and the 27th Lancers winter guard. I had been teaching the Lancers color guard for 10 years and had trained several members from the age of 7. The Lancers had a very competitive winter guard in the late 60’s, and an extremely successful cadet winter guard for several years. Almost 20 years later, the 27th Lancers winter guard took the floor for the first time in WGI competition. This was a historic time on several measures. What made this experience unique is that the guard had only 9 members. The average size of a winter color guard in WGI at that time was 24. This was a challenge to everyone on the design team, the tech team, and the members of the guard. As the program came to life, so did the performers, and the audience as they took in the talent of these 9 individuals that became part of WGI’s history. The 27th Lancer winter guard paved the way for units around the globe to learn how to be successful with small numbers, and the story continues on today. By Denise Bonfiglio

I remember having 10 people at the first rehearsal and going home that night, clutching my white out and re-doing the drill. I remember the staff meeting when we talked about our ending, an all flag feature with plain white flags. Dolores said, “You’re kidding, right?” I remember lining up for the first show and a veteran member saying to me “I can’t believe we’re really doing this. We’re going to be laughed at.” I remember handing the sound guy a CD instead of the standard cassette and him not knowing what to do with it. I remember taking our youngest member in to the arena to see where she would perform. She was 13 years old and petrified. I remember watching the finals from a secret little hiding spot all by myself, and clapping so hard my hands turned red, yelling so loud my voice went hoarse, and then crying so hard I couldn’t speak. I remember the retreat ceremony and Tony Zappala walking on the floor to make sure his girls were okay and then leading them back to the bus. I remember the guard’s banquet a few weeks later and Tony presenting me with the WGI plaque for second place. It’s the only piece of color guard memorabilia I still possess.

It seems like yesterday that we were all sitting in the office at Raider Hall when Jay Murphy first mentioned doing a show based on Romeo & Juliet. How would we count to words? A show based mainly on one piece of equipment, sabre. “OK, how many of you know how to spin a sabre? Three… four, great.” The words of William Shakespeare combined with a natural crescendo of emotions meant that most of us couldn’t watch a run-through the week leading up to WGI. Members kept coming up asking for technical comments and I responded they were fine when I was really outside the door crying my eyes out. You know it’s a little strange when you’re one of the last guards of the weekend and it’s just two of you left doing your warm up rituals. It’s a very intimate moment and you have to pause and appreciate how far you’ve come since that first rehearsal. I remember looking at friends on the Blessed Sacrament staff, exchanging a glance of “well, this is it”, and down the tunnel we went. By Ron Nankervis

Returning to Dayton in 1991 after championships in Buffalo the year before, the comfort of UD Arena set the stage for some of the most imaginative designs and thrilling performances in WGI history. With their intricate interpretation of the poetry of Jack Kerouac, the San Jose Raiders “Railroad” show took top honors in the independent class. The Raiders unique visual construction withstood a strong challenge from Emerald Marquis’ impressive “Celtic” show highlighted by their seamless fusion of choreography and staging. Not to be outdone, the scholastic units were led by Miamisburg High School’s “Candle in the Wind” show. This emotional tribute to Marilyn Monroe, which still captures the hearts of those who view it today, received a standing ovation in the middle of the their prelims performance and earned a record setting score for that time (95.30) in finals. The young ladies of Choctawhatchee High School attained the silver medal for their “Velveteen Rabbit” show. This program displayed the class and elegance that most likely would have earned them a championship any other year. By Joe Sowders

We formed our friendships because of color guard, and ironically it was color guard that was beginning to tear us apart. It just did not seem fair that we should have to scatter all over the country to live out our color guard dreams. We represented so many wonderful organizations: Miller’s Blackhawks, The State Street Review, Blessed Sacrament, The Pride of Cincinnati, and countless others. We all fell in love with each other, with performing, with teaching, with living. I had aged out a year earlier, choosing to teach my last season. I had been teaching high school for a couple of years, but nothing could prepare me for the challenges of trying to bring out an Independent World Guard. Escapade was born. They performed with the passion that only love could produce. We were poor, we were gypsies, and we made mistakes. Hearing “Escapade, you may take the floor in competition” was a dream come true. We were in awe to be on the same floor as the San Jose Raiders, the Emerald Marquis, and the State Street Review, but more than anything else, we will remember the roar of the crowd. To this day I believe the audience gave more to us than we could ever hope to give back. We tried our best, and in the end, we performed together one last time. By Michael Gaines

The first WGI Percussion World Championship was held in Dayton on an auditorium stage. The Championships didn’t move into a gymnasium until 1994. Nine drum lines from 4 states participated. There were no props, flats or sets. All the units were in their band uniforms. There were no story lines or plots or causes to be portrayed. This was before Ensemble Analysis. The only aspects appraised were performance quality and effect. WGI’s major accomplishment in the competitive percussion activity has been to give focus and direction to an activity that had already been in existence for 15 years. An activity without any centralized purpose, other than to allow more kids to play drums more actively in their schools year round. Before WGI there were pockets of “drum line shows” scattered all over the country. Now almost every state in the US is represented in WGI’s regional and World Championship competitions. Because of the efforts of the WGI staff and volunteers, there are many hundreds of young people performing in the percussion medium that probably wouldn’t have otherwise. And for many reasons, this is a very good thing. By Ward Durrett

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS

They say home is where the heart is, and in 1994 Colleen Mendoza and I had the honor of being cocaptains of my hometown color guard, The San Jose Raiders. Never have I loved a group of individuals, or a season like this one. In 1994, the Raiders were lucky to have Stanley Knaub move to San Jose. The group took on a new life, something closer to a dance company than a color guard. Jay and Scott’s contemporary interpretation of Vivaldi’s “Gloria” would once again guide the Raiders through a radical change. I remember going to triple finals. Bishop Kearney performed an interpretation of “The Scream.” The challenge was clear after Independent World Prelims when the Emerald Marquis placed first, beating us by .05. They were stunning as they recreated the theater stage with their velvet curtains and talented performers. We made WGI history that year, walking out of the Dayton Arena having earned our 5th consecutive gold medal due to a placement flip flop in finals. By Marco Chavez

The Blue Devils 1996 “Summertimez” show was special from the moment it began to materialize. I had an immediate sense that this would be special. The guard was made up almost entirely of veterans, and was the culmination of the summer and winter training programs. It was one of those rare times when a great staff, a great show, and a great group of members all coincided. But the whole was greater than the sum of the parts. An intensity developed that could not have been designed. That year, the Thursday exhibition performance was added for the first time. Most of the world guards chose to take advantage of the chance to work in the arena. But the Blue Devils guard showed us a new side that day. They were horrible: official moment of panic for the staff.

With the 1997 WGI Championships being held in Phoenix, there was definitely a feeling of uncertainty going into World Championships. Dayton had become home for WGI and we were comfortable there. Hearing Ernie over the speakers seemed to calm the butterflies. Who could forget the elegance of Shadow Danse, the breathtaking creativity and prop of Northwest Passage, the artistic beauty of Center Grove’s “Joy”, Emerald’s complex production of “Chairman Dances”, the emotions Pride evoked with “Alcatraz”, and the Blue Devils wonderful effects in “White Rabbit”? But as I look back there was one performance that weekend that stands out in my mind was Fantasia! When they came out on Sunday and performed “Spartacus”, I was overcome. Their run that day remains, for me, as one of the most captivating performances I have had the pleasure of witnessing. By Nola Jones

I remember one member wanted me to watch him throw one more sabre six in warm up. I excitedly watched him nail it, but I also noticed a rattling noise when he caught it. As I held the extra sabre in my hand, all I could think was “This is WGI Finals, his sabre is not going to break!” As I stood in the aisle holding Mike’s hand watching their finals performance, I notice a piece of something on the tarp — a sabre hilt! The performer did a good job of recovering and managed to find a new sabre to use. The crowd was going crazy, the guard was having an amazing time. They were “spinning with their hearts” which meant the world to all that watched. The standing ovation they received was incredible and lasted until the last person was in the tunnel.

I remember... early season looking at Braddock HS and saying to Marc what are we going to do next… I remember him saying, “April as long as the crowd claps that is all that matters”… I remember wanting them to get a standing ovation... I remember they got one… I remember realizing I didn’t want to go to World Class… I remember putting medals on those kids… I remember the next morning Ernie announcing the NEW World Class guards… I remember how sick I got to my stomach... I remember watching Fantasia… I remember I cried watching Emerald Marquis... I remember sitting by Denise B and she was dialing her parents on the cell phone so they could hear the scores with her… I remember watching the tears run down her face when they announced the score... I remember the tears rolled down my face… I remember realizing my tears were not about the win, or a medal, my tears were for how hard so many work to play the game. By April Gilligan

Wow! How do you summarize a season that ended in a gold medal? Well, there are lots of other adjectives that come to mind: difficult, fulfilling, draining, inspiring, educational, emotional, challenging, uplifting, validating. Come to think of it, these adjectives all describe Winter Guard International. It was January, and out on the west coast, Riverside Community College assembled a winter guard that included members who came from all over the world, literally, to share in the exhilarating experience that is WGI! The “I” in WGI was certainly represented in this 30-member group of entertainers. In addition to the members from all over California, there were members from Colorado, Missouri, North Carolina, Canada, Holland and Japan! They overcame cultural and language barriers. They learned about commitment, discipline and follow through. They traveled, ate, worked and played together, got used to wearing a bowler hat, and soon learned that you don’t have to have the same last name to be part of a family. By Gary Locke

The 2001 gold medalist, Pride of Cincinnati, performed a program entitled “Channel One Suite”. Pride went undefeated during the season and continued all the way through finals, outscoring the runnerups by a healthy margin. Sadly, we said our good-byes to Emerald Marquis this year. Performing to “Malaguena.” Blessed Sacrament got the attention of audiences everywhere they went in 2001. Fans were enthralled with the production of “Enigma Variations”. St. Ann’s World took the “long road” to Milwaukee, performing “The Last Breath”. When they got to WGI prelims, it seemed clear they were ready to play. Fantasia’s “It Was 20 Years Ago Today” program presented a collage of ideas centered around a complex composition of Beatles music. Their finals performance was winnable, and they enjoyed a meteoric rise from 7th to 3rd, and nearly captured 2nd! Again, Fantasia brought the activity to new heights! By Jim Mahoney

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS

Dayton, Ohio

This year signified a three-year journey for the members and staff at Pope High School of which passion, perseverance, and trust come to my mind. I had the honor to watch these young ladies grow from members in the A class to World class in one year. By 2002, they became so comfortable performing and sharing with others. This had been important for them from day one and to watch them become so confident was an absolute joy and thrill. As a staff, we were completely moved by their run through finals day they did for Fantasia. The girls were excited and honored to have such a wonderful audience and to see the love of performing pour out of their hearts brought us to tears. They took that same spirit as they came on the floor for finals that night. Bowler hats on, heads held high, they walked on the floor with such grace and poise. Hearing the crowd react to them walking on the floor made us all realize how much heart and love there is in our activity. By Adam Sage

When I think of the 2003 San Jose Raiders and our program based on the life and art of Frida Kahlo, “organic” is the first word that comes to mind. The process seemed natural and unforced….from the story that Jay shares about sitting in a theatre in San Francisco watching previews and 10 seconds into a trailer of a movie about a Mexican artist ….sighing to himself ….realizing that he had “the show”….or watching Carol guide dancers through her earthy and centered philosophy of connected movement…. Mark, manipulating bodies, wood, steel and silk through space as if following prescribed carvings from abstract statues….and the performers themselves so connected to the material to the artist and to the vision that was being created. It felt easy somehow, from the first rehearsal at the old hall, when we all watched Frida Yadira walk across front stage….it felt at times like the effort was guided by the hand of the artist herself moving us through her beauty, pain and triumph….it just felt right….Organic.

We made the decision to make Northern Lights all male for the 2004 season. I was personally very apprehensive. I enjoyed teaching the girls over the years and really hated to lose them. This new dynamic was strange for all of us, and took a couple of months to get used to. We had very diverse group of boys from every age range, background, and all different parts of the country.

By mid February the ensemble was tight both outside and in rehearsal. By April, we were very prepared and looking forward to Championships. San Diego was so memorable for all of us. It was an off-shoot of an idea that came one rainy, Sunday morning in May, while sitting in traffic. I turned my head to the left and saw a woman sitting in her car with her head in her hands. She looked frozen; as if I had gotten a photo of her in a moment of internal struggle. I began to look around at all of the other people sitting in traffic. I was looking through raindrop microscopes and smeared taillight reflections at snapshots of other men, women, and children in what seemed like a beautiful collage of “the human condition.” A frozen moment, a picture, free from context, had exposed this connection. In a much bigger sense, I realized that “Everybody Hurts.” I was definitely—“Not Alone.” These “frozen moments” became a design motif and driving factor in Pride of Cincinnati’s 2005 production of “Everybody Hurts.” As designers, I think that we are always searching for metaphors to create compositional depth and clarity. In this case, it seemed to be just the right way to add an element of “connectedness” to every component of not only the show; but in some ways, to the season and each other.

“For the past couple of years, Rhapsody Independent has used Electra Tarp’s fine product. We wanted something that would be high quality and last under all conditions. We found that with Electra Tarp. I have been 100% satisfied with how my products have come out every year. They are the most pleasant and helpful people you could work with. I wouldn’t have it any other way and I recommend Electra Tarp to ANYONE in the Winter Guard Activity!”

Call it immaturity, but we still love it when our friends come by to play. Watching great musicians perform with the products you've created is a wonderful feeling. It fosters a sense of pride that encompasses everything we do. Are we the largest? No. But we're working on that. The best? Some think so...but we'll leave that judgment up to others. Let's just say that, so far...we've aced Semi Finals with a perfect score in Percussion Quality, and we’ll see you in Dayton.

We would like to thank all the Ensembles that have chosen Innovative Percussion Drumsticks and Mallets as they face another year of great WGI competition. You are all champions to us.
