T he Executive Director of WGI Sport of the Arts
April 19, 2007 Once again it is my pleasure to greet everyone gathered in Dayton for the 2007 WGI Percussion World Championships. This year is our 30th anniversary and the future of WGI remains bright with the promise of all our performers bring to our organization. As they strive to reach new heights, WGI is also achieving new milestones. For the first time in our history, a state-of-the-art webcast will bring our community together for those who cannot join us in Dayton for this happy celebration. Participation in activities like WGI enhance the lives of our performers while motivating them to achieve their life goals. As you read this, the end of the 2007 season is a few hours away. Countless hours of dedication will culminate in a brief moment under the lights and our collective recognition, regardless of score, should be waves of thunderous applause for the gift these performers offer. I encourage you to give them a moment they will always treasure. We come to Dayton for the 21st time in our history and anniversaries always makes one reflect on a wealth of memories stored at UD Arena or Nutter Center. Some of us have spent over half our lives making the annual pilgrimage to the home of all things winter. Unless you’ve done it, nothing can really capture that feeling of when you come down the tunnel or through the curtain onto the floor. It’s akin to the Wizard of Oz after the tornado. John F. Kennedy once said that the definition of happiness was “the full use of your powers along lines of excellence”. If that is so, then Disneyland has some stiff competition this weekend from Dayton as the happiest place on earth. At least in my mind, there is no contest. Best wishes and thank you for supporting the “Sport of the Arts”!

WGI at 3o!
By Richard Berthelsen
Each championship year is special in its own way and yet brings back memories of all those that have gone before. This year, as we celebrate the 30th WGI World Championships we also reflect on just how far we have travelled since that very first competition at Conant High School in Chicago. Could anyone there have imagined a massive event with 487 groups in 14 percussion and color guard classes on two weekends in Dayton incorporating both music and motion?
which might be interpreted differently from one day to the next.
Then, as now, Championships were a potpourri of color, youth, competitive enthusiasm, nerves and the sheer joy of performing for peers and the audience. And while there were many visionary people involved in the first years, few would have been bold enough to anticipate competitions that were held in large arenas like UD with props, scenery, a designer floor and costumes, not uniforms. No one would have believed that contests in several future years would result in a tie for first place (3 times in world class alone). Or that we would have more high schools than ever and equally value their contribution with groups that are independent. And who would have forseen percussion as an event on its own indoors rather than just with marching bands or drum corps? These developments were all only imaginary as those first guards took the floor for competition.
For those old enough to remember, the inaugural championship was a momentous event—more for the opportunity to be together on our own for the very first time. Prior to 1978 guards competed as part of other events, and only WGI provided the first occasion when everyone competed with the rules and judging system we had agreed to by consensus—no easy task! It was still a few years before it became fully evident that we didn’t all agree on what the words meant or what was valued. At the first WGI, the guards were all independent, competing in one class, and comprised of only girls (except for The Cavaliers, The Kilties, and State Street). The event itself was in a crowded gymnasium which today would seem more like a Saturday night local show much less the epic weekends we have come to associate with World Championships.
In the times in which we live, change is a constant and WGI experiences that as much as any activity. Each year since 1978 has brought innovation to our creative approach and what we once saw as unthinkable is topped each and every year. We have been enriched by the participation of groups from other countries and continents and influenced by the music, art, dance, theatre, the media and issues of our time. Each championship has brought with it something new, something bigger and something to get excited about all over again.
For many of the first years, color guards from different areas of the country saw each other as exotic creatures who reflected their own regions. You could spot a guard from New England not just by their accents but from their approach to their equipment (or carriage as they referred to it) and they usually represented some Saint or another. Midwest groups were unmatched in their marching execution (it wasn’t movement then), and were usually associated with a drum corps. And west coast groups were experimenting with dance and usually were drawn from whole cities rather than churches or drum corps. They invariably provoked controversy and many asked “Is this really color guard?” Who could forget that best of all, in those days, the timing judge often decided the contest and ensured that no one went home without a penalty—usually for some flag code infraction around the National Colors, a dropped piece of equipment or some timing deficiency
WGI 2007 will be no different. While we might take time to smile at how advanced we thought we were in any of the previous thirty championships and the state of our art, we know that the young people and designers will push the envelope once again each year. In doing so, they honor the spirit and enduring values of our founders and that which has never changed about WGI. Championships brings together thousands of young people who are at the peak of their training and commitment in the pursuit of excellence and innovation with the support of parents and fans in the finale to the competitive season while the judges try to make sense of it all. WGI at 30—much to remember and many more memories to come!

Hall of Fame HALL OF FAME
Hall of Fame The Hall of Fame is the highest honor to those individuals who make a significant contribution to WGI, and who have in some way influenced the course of our history. Their contribution may be made through artistic standards, administrative leadership or adjudication. Winter Guard International Sport of the Arts, is proud to announce the election of Michael Gaines and Randy Nelson to the WGI Hall of Fame. They join the other twenty-six distinguished honorees listed below.
Randy is the Director of Bands at Choctawhatchee High School. Choctawhatchee’s influence began when the color guard became a finalist in 1984 for the first time and continues to this day. Throughout the years Randy’s beloved “Choctaw” produced landmark shows of the scholastic class. The years 1990 through 1992 saw consecutive silver medals and enshrined Choctawhatchee in color guard history with shows such as “Spanish Fantasy”, “Deedles” and the classic “Velveteen Rabbit.” In 1990 and 1991 Choctawhatchee broke new ground by having not one, but two World Class high school finalists setting the educational paradigm of having two color guards used by many high schools today.
Michael Gaines
Michael Gaines San Francisco, California
In 1992 Michael Gaines created Escapade which originally was only to compete for one year as a way for “a group of friends to march together one last time.” Instead, that very popular color guard competed four years culminating in a second place finish in 1995.
Known for his ability to design shows that appeal to the crowd, his work with Center Grove HS, Centerville HS, Choctawhatchee HS, Kennesaw Mountain HS, Miamisburg HS, and Pope HS have created some of the most memorable shows in the scholastic class. In 1997 Michael began his wildly successful association with Pride of Cincinnati. Michael has also been a force internationally as well through his work with Aimachi from Nagoya, Japan. Michael’s contributions to WGI are not limited to the creative aspect. He has served tirelessly on the Board of Directors as Vice President as well as the Task Force/Steering Committee. He spearheaded the debate on lifting the age restriction in the World Class and was an inaugural clinician at Spinfest!! His philosophy of quality of design without sacrificing audience reaction is a message that resonates with newer designers.
Randy’s dominant force in WGI is not limited to his own high school winter guard. His work with numerous Open and A Class guards such as Orange Park HS, Harrison Central HS, JSU Center Stage, University of Alabama as well as Northeast Independent have helped strengthen those classes. He is a valued resource and a counselor for many newer designers and instructors. His vision at Choctawhatchee has also made their percussion ensemble a permanent fixture on the WGI national scene.

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS
Dayton, Ohio
1993
The first WGI Percussion World Championship was held in Dayton on an auditorium stage. The Championships didn’t move into a gymnasium until 1994. Nine drum lines from 4 states participated. There were no props, flats or sets. All the units were in their band uniforms. There were no story lines or plots or causes to be portrayed. This was before Ensemble Analysis. The only aspects appraised were performance quality and effect. Now there is Percussion Theatre. Intricate sets, stories and costuming all presented within the context of a musical message communicated by drums and mallet keyboards. And there is traditional percussion ensemble performance too, annually establishing new standards of performance quality; all in the WGI setting. Quite an evolution in a very short time frame. WGI’s major accomplishment in the competitive percussion activity has been to give focus and direction to an activity that had already been in existence for 15 years. An activity without any centralized purpose, other than to allow more kids to play drums more actively in their schools year round. Before WGI there were pockets of “drum line shows” scattered all over the country. Now almost every state in the US is represented in WGI’s regional and World Championship competitions. Because of the efforts of the WGI staff and volunteers, there are many hundreds of young people performing in the percussion medium that probably wouldn’t have otherwise. And for many reasons, this is a very good thing. By Ward Durrett

Although 1993 was the first year of WGI Percussion World Championships, 1994 was the first time that it was held in a gymnasium. With such a large performance space, drill and movement really seemed to take off. It was a big step in the evolution of the activity that has transformed indoor percussion into “percussion theatre.” The diversity of programming grew to such an extent that each ensemble truly had their own identity. To support the growth of units and depth in the shows, the classes offered for competition tripled. In 1994 WGI introduced an independent class as well as a concert class. The Blue Knights got down with “A Knight Groove” to take top honors in the Independent Class. The Wheaters showed off a more patriotic side with “American Hero,” and the Mandarins took a leap out “On The Edge.” The concert class was dominated by Baldwinsville High School, while New Philadelphia High School was runner-up. On the scholastic side of the competition Lincoln-Way High School took a trip to receive first place with their show, “World Travels.” John Overton High School showed how well they knew the “Jamaican Mambo.” “The Police” inspired Maumee High School for their 1994 production. Other memorable performances came from CB West High School when they performed their show “Prisms,” North Penn High School’s “Jazz Beats,” Downers Grove High School’s “Silver Spheres,” and Father Ryan High School’s “Hoedown.”

The incredible advancements that took place over this one year was a true testament of how indoor percussion would grow like wildfire in the winter pageantry community. Each ensemble took it upon themselves to pioneer new genres of music and themes to make this activity “the next big thing.”

I was involved with a group named Spirit out of Toronto Ontario, Canada. We had a lot of Phantom Regiment members along with some local corps members from Ontario come in to march, along with some friends as staff to help out. We had a small but very talented group. Our show was based on music from “On The Waterfront. We put together a show which was music to drill...and a great young dancer to help us out during the ballad. We had no tarp, costumes, back drops, or amplification. Just the bare bones. Certainly a far distance to what the activity is known for today. It was really the early stages of what the WGI percussion activity has turned into today. I attended the WGI instructors meetings in Orlando held during the winter. This was where all of the staffs had an opportunity to vocalize where the activity needed to grow in terms of the evaluation process. I could remember sitting in a small meeting room at the hotel. The conversations were heated yet passionate. Everyone was very respectful as to the history of WGI and excited for the bright future it could be. As I look back at those meetings, I realize how much was discussed about the sheets, direction of the activity and the overall general philosophy of WGI in the percussion element and how much those early stages and meetings contributed to what we have today.

My memories of 1996: 1. Watching Gus Barbaro, WGI Percussion Coordinator/ Director, sit in the front row laughing, clapping and cheering on all performers 2. Great year and great strides in indoor percussion in show concepts and quality of sound being developed to what we have today 3. Phantom Regiment, when they still sponsored an indoor ensemble, use ramps 4. Many ensembles still used past seasons marching band uniforms to perform and compete indoors 5. Attending 2 WGI Percussion Regionals in terrible venues 6. John Overton HS, Nashville, TN. with steps and W. Carrollton HS, Dayton OH, small hair pin turns in halls to warm up area 7. Watching Julie Davila’s ensemble, John Overton HS, amaze the crowd and her student’s love of performance—every time they performed 8. Watching Jay Webb’s ensemble, Avon HS, perform a great technical/ proficient book and cheer all other ensembles from Indiana at finals 9. 1997
The year was 1997 and for the first time, WGI Percussion Championships were held in the west. Phoenix, Arizona provided a beautiful backdrop for one of the most memorable championships ever. Growth of western participation was a given and two classes were added for the first time. Included in these were the Independent Open Class and the Independent Concert Class. The words “percussion theatre” became mainstream with an incredible musical and visual rendition of “Waterworld” performed by Northglenn High School. This Scholastic World Champion took costuming, as well as, audio/visual composition to unprecedented heights. Another milestone was set by King Phillip’s silver medalist rendition of the Celtic favorite, “Riverdance”. This group brought a new level of musical and technical excellence to the forum of indoor percussion. History was made when Avon High School became the first to win championships in multiple classes. The former A Class champion became the model for educational growth as they claimed the gold medal in the Open Class. In our largest class, we were all “knocked out” by the 1997 A Class champion, Clayton Valley High School, under the direction of Scott Johnson. Gateway High School continued their dominance of the Concert class. Their performance of “Songs for an Ancient Soul” brought the crowd to their feet and is still listed as a WGI Percussion favorite. Music City Mystique and The Blue Knights fought tooth and nail in the Independent World Class with Mystique winning their 2nd World Championship by .10. This marked the 2nd of a record 6 championships for this Nashville based group. WGI’s first Independent Open Champion was South Mountain Community College from Phoenix, Arizona and the initial Independent Concert Championship was claimed by the Patriots from Rochester, New York. 1997 also marked the end of the College Class division. UNLV will continue to be listed as the last WGI Percussion College division World Champion.

1998
1998 was the first year that Dartmouth High School competed at WGI. We were just hoping to make the cut for finals. We never imagined the possibility of winning our first time out. Certain circumstances of the trip did not make winning an easy feat. We had to ride 16 hours on an old bus that was leaking rain on us the entire journey. When the bus finally arrived in Dayton, we learned that the hotel had given away all of our rooms! After spending hours on the phone, we eventually found rooms; clear on the other side of town. To make matters worse, at that time I only had a total of 3 people on the staff; myself, Jamie Eckert, and my wife, Darcie. Because my son was just a baby, Darcie was not able to come to WGI with the group. She was usually responsible for getting the mat, props, and dancers on the floor. The week before WGI, she came up with the idea of covering the entire mat with torn-up newspaper to give an extra element of movement and dimension to the show. Well, at prelims the timing and penalty judge informed me that for every shred of newspaper left behind, we would be assessed a tenth of a point penalty. I frantically called Darcie and told her we weren’t going to use the newspaper; that it was too risky. She said, and I quote, “If you don’t use that newspaper…don’t come home!” We assigned a parent, armed with a broom, to follow us off the floor and make sure nothing, not even a shred, was left behind. Fortunately, a few things did go our way. We found a four-leaf clover, the kids had one of the best experiences of their lives, and we started a meaningful tradition for our ensemble. Competing in WGI for all of these years has definitely helped strengthen Dartmouth High School’s percussion program. By Tom Aungst

Creativity in design. Technical achievement. Astonishing entertainment. This was WGI percussion, 1999. With designers realizing the sky was the limit, it is still the most talked about year in our short history. Coast to coast, and across the classes, shows were filled with a masterful combination of skill and design. The Blue Knights took off with “A Brief History of Flight.” Mystique brought the Serengeti to life. Franklin Central and Gateway changed the way we look at concert percussion forever. The Scholastic World groups broke the last barriers in what we could bring to the table. Dartmouth’s West Side Story; Ponderosa’s conveyor tenor solo; Mission Viejo’s “Time to Time”; and Northglenn’s “Life After Life.” Four shows separated by .35 at Finals. As the design element grew, the performers achievement was pushed far beyond what most thought possible for marching percussion. Players were asked to move at breakneck speed through impossible listening environments and do so with a confidence that is now the paradigm.

Finally, the entertainment. Hour after hour of programs that sent audiences through a remarkable range of emotions. Free thinking shows designed and performed at the highest level were rewarding for both competitors and audiences alike.

What were my greatest memories of the 2000 WGI Percussion World Finals? For me, the answer is easy. My memories center around King Philip High School of Wrentham, Massachusetts, representing movement percussion and of course, my own group, Franklin Central High School of Indianapolis, Indiana representing concert percussion. King Philip’s production, “Easter Symphony” by David Holsinger, was the perfect synthesis of visual and musical elements, representing the highest form of the pageantry arts. The expertly crafted show convened a story, which was reflected in music, costumes, and scenery. Congratulations King Philip! The emotion generated from Franklin Central’s performance of “The Music of Aaron Copland” consistently inspired this grateful director. My emotion was partially generated from the satisfaction that the members had performed such a sophisticated musical composition and how far concert percussion had evolved. But in the end it was the music, in its purest form that generated great emotion. The timing, timbre, clarity, peaks, and valleys of the musical journey combined to create a presentation that will remain fresh in the minds of the performers, parents, audience and director. Thank You Franklin Central! By Dan Fyffe

As I reflect back on the year 2001 for WGI Percussion, I can’t help but think back to the very first WGI percussion competition in 1993 that I had the opportunity to judge, and then comparing the growth between those years. I must say that the development of show concepts and chops were pretty incredible, but the quality of playing has always been at a high level with the champions! The differences for me between the years of 1993 and 2001 is the amount of participating ensembles across the county, as well as how many of these ensembles perform with the quality of champions, thus putting us judges in a more challenging situation to pick the best in each class. As we move on to thoughts about 2001 I can remember the satisfaction between the music industry, designers and performers. A great harmony had developed between the 3 in terms of quality of instruments and implements, the writing, and approach to the instruments within the acoustics that we perform and adjudicate in. In other words, the development of indoor percussion instruments, drum heads, sticks and mallets came into play big time, as well as arrangers refining their writing skill for our arena. The performers had to upgrade their skill on how to play at softer dynamic levels for long periods of time for the sake of the audience understanding their musical performances in a not so friendly acoustic environment. After all, this is a completely different ball game since the move indoors. The upgrading qualities were at a fast pace between those years, as they continue on to this day, so have your self a good listen to the recording of groups in all classes in 2001, they really speak for themselves.

It was a year of “firsts!” It was the first time that Riverside Community College entered WGI Championships, it was the first year that RCC won, but most importantly, it was the first time that a deaf person performed in a WGI show all about how deaf people experience music. It was the first time our percussionists learned sign language to better communicate with our deaf ‘soloist’ and, along the way, we learned a lot more than a new language. We learned that you don’t have to have the same last name to be part of a family. It was emotional, eye-opening, exciting, scary, exhilarating, educational and fun—all at the same time! It all started with a unique idea for a winter drum line show, hatched by Judy Johnson and fully realized musically by Scott Johnson. When Judy’s experience of working with deaf students and sign language, coupled with Scott’s experience of working with percussion students, joined with the resources at RCC and the cooperation of the California School for the Deaf, it was magic! Sure, there were lots of stumbling blocks along the way, but exploring the world of Holly Turner, a deaf high school cheerleader (yes, she was!) and learning how she “felt the music on her skin” was unforgettable. As with all indoor drum lines, hours and hours were spent on the preparation and rehearsal of the 6-minute show. The difference this time was in the emotional commitment as RCC told the story of a silent world, dominated by “sound vibrations” and visual cues. At first awkward, the relationship between the performers grew, using eye contact, a nod or a wink, a raised eyebrow, a smile and— eventually—lots of hugs. A constant throughout was Holly’s enthusiasm for the project (and for life!) and Scott’s determination to alter the narration to always reflect the most important goal—honesty.

On judge commented that our “young lady performer might react differently” to a musical cue in a particular segment of the presentation, assuming that she was an “actress.” When told that she was deaf, he was flabbergasted! Of course, she was an actress, a deaf actress— acting like life hadn’t dealt her a harsh blow, acting like everything was ‘normal,’ and all the while motivating the RCC drummers to forget about their insignificant problems. Along the way, the show also motivated hundreds of audience members to rise to their feet at the end of each performance, having learned a little bit about the “Sounds of Silence.” And all of this because of a drum line and the opportunities that WGI provides for reaching out to people? 2003 can be described in three words: growth, diversity and talent! More than 600 percussion ensembles performed at the various WGI events, with an amazing 143 entered at Championships! The champions that were crowned in the eight percussion classes came from eight different states and presented programs as diverse as one could imagine, thereby validating the philosophy that “on any given day, ANY chosen style has an equal opportunity to succeed” Who can forget some of the brilliant shows in 2003? Among my favorites: The Blue Knights’ “Zodiac”, Riverside’s “South Africa”, The Project’s “Asylum” and, of course Aimachi’s “Voice of the Soul”. Winston Churchill’s use of their color guard in “Construction” and Ponderosa’s “Earth, Wind and Fire”. Ft. Mill’s “Short, Wonderful Ride” and Tunstall’s “Jazzical”. Northcoast Academy’s “Outside the Box” and United’s “Cardiac Arrest”. Thomas Worthington’s “Communication” and Everett’s “Niner Two”. Portsmouth’s “Scheherazade”, LEAP’s “The Colors of Life” and Enterprise’s “This Ain’t Oz”. I have been one of three judge-representatives to the Percussion Advisory Board (PAB) since 1997. This committee is made up of instructors and/or directors of units who make finals in each class. The committee meets each May to review the season that has just finished and to discuss issues and rules’ proposals for the following year. As such, it has been an honor and a pleasure to interact with the most creative and passionate minds in the indoor percussion activity—led by Hall of Famer Mark Thurston, Director of Education for WGI—and to help guide the philosophical and “real” future of this great activity. The PAB meeting in May, 2003, was especially interesting because we re-capped a very successful season and looked forward to 2004 in San Diego by discussing proposals that included:

1. eliminating the age limit for the Independent World Class; 2. allowing students from the same school district to compete in scholastic classes; 3. creating a formula for the number of finalists at regionals; 4. defining the order of appearance for all classes at regionals and championships; 5. replacing “Ensemble Analysis” with a caption called simply “Visual”; 6. establishing a “General Effect Visual” caption; 7. adding a “Concert ‘A’” Class; 7. adding a “Standstill” class; 8. adding a third judge to the steering committee. How many of those proposals were approved by the PAB members and put into practice? How many are in place today, 2007? You’ll have to test your knowledge of WGI Percussion to find out! Onward! In 2004, WGI World Championships were held in San Diego, the city where it ‘Never Rains’. Well, once the rain stopped, we all experienced a wonderful Championships week in beautiful weather! California was a welcoming host and represented their state admirably. Nearly 50% of the Scholastic Marching Finalists (through all the classes!) were from California. Their in-state dominance reached incredibly far, with Canyon Hills JUNIOR high school making finals in PSA. Music City Mystique performed one of the finest productions that we’d seen to date with their dramatic interpretation of the Seven Deadly Sins, “Se7en” and won all of the Independent World captions in finals. Centerville HS won Scholastic World with their program “That’s a Stretch”, pulling a tarp out in Finals that measured 150 feet wide, ‘stretching’ the boundaries of the arena (and the camera!) to its limits. Performing in a new facility is always a challenge when there are new acoustics to deal with and a flow that we’re never seen before (the huge ramp!) but we also had to adjust to a new ‘Lot’ scene outside. There were a number of other events going on at the same time and the administration definitely had their hands full with the situation, but Mark, Andy and Jim handled it with class, as always. Things were finally worked out and we witnessed some GREAT playing in the lot throughout the week; rumor has it Krispy Kreme Donuts had one of their best weekends of the year!

On a personal note, Centerville and Rhythm X earned their first World Class medals this year (Gold – PSW and Bronze – PIW) and I’ll never forget the looks on everyone faces during retreat, priceless! This was the last time that WGI had Percussion and Guard on the same weekends and have since switched to an incredible separate weekend format, further enhancing the experience for everyone involved. Thank you WGI for all of the wonderful memories! By Tim Fairbanks

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS
Dayton, Ohio
2005
If one word could sum up the WGI percussion season of 2005, that word would be, “entertainment.” WGI was taken by storm with the energetic show brought to us from the West Coast by Riverside Community College who “Manifested” a show combining extreme drumming with an even more creative visual program. Nipping at Riverside’s heels was the always entertaining Rhythm X from Ohio whose show “Wired” proved to be quite electric both nights in Dayton. The scholastic groups raised the standard once again for performance quality. This year reminded us that the best way to get people talking is old fashioned drumming. Combining nearly flawless execution with new age electronic sounds, Center Grove brought home the gold with their show, “Cynosure.” Proving that placements are not set in stone until finals are over, Centerville’s show “In Perspective” moved up two places from prelims to finals. With this class always pushing the creative ledge, two groups put the word Sport in Sport of the Arts. In a race to the end, Hilliard Darby sped to a fifth place finish with their show, “The Race.” And who could forget the “Road to the Final Four” from Father Ryan as they took us out of a musical setting and simulated a real basketball game. The 2005 WGI World Championships left fans and performers hungry for more. It was an amazing season that will be talked about for years to come. By Derek Schletzer

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS
Dayton, Ohio
2006
Being a resident of the Dayton area, I have been very fortunate to attend the WGI Championships almost every year of my life. Among all of those years, none were more memorable than 2006. It was a very bittersweet year for me since it was my first year as an age-out after marching Rhythm X for 3 years. Now I was on the other end of the activity as an arranger, instructor, and friend to those who still had years left. Although there were many great memories from inside the arena, what happened in the parking lot will long be remembered. Rhythm X is a very unique ensemble with a very unique approach to their rehearsals and warm ups. While many groups put up a wall of separation between their members and their fans, we decided to tear down that wall. The Rhythm X battery claimed the grassy knoll near the high way for their warm up site. They brought a grill, microwave, as well as many other items from my apartment to give it a more “home-like atmosphere (this was all news to me until I showed up that day). The fans were invited to get as close as they could to the drum line and be a part of the fun and love that have become the Rhythm X-perience. That day helped a new direction of camaraderie among units and remove a little of the off-the-floor tension that has been a part of the activity for too long. By Andrew Markworth

Scholarships WGI SCHOLARSHIPS
2006 Scholarship Recipients
WGI recognizes the young performers of our activity who pursue academic excellence. All groups who participate in the World Championships are invited to submit one applicant from their unit who is a high school senior or already enrolled in college. A committee of volunteers, instructors, and judges review dozens of applications for these awards and select students who stand out in qualities of academic, artistic, and personal standards.
The “30 Years of Excellence scholarship program has been established to help celebrate the WGI 30th Anniversary. This special fundraising effort will allow WGI to award an unprecedented thirty separate scholarships this weekend. Since its inception, the WGI Scholarship Program has provided over $250,000 to deserving young people. Through the 50/50 raffle and the purchase of this program book, you, the patrons of WGI, remain a major source of revenue for the scholarships awarded. Corporate and private donations also enrich the fund that offers assistance to these worthy individuals. Should you wish to make a taxdeductible donation to the WGI Scholarship Fund, please contact the WGI office at 937/434-7100.

“For the past couple of years, Rhapsody Independent has used Electra Tarp’s fine product. We wanted something that would be high quality and last under all conditions. We found that with Electra Tarp. I have been 100% satisfied with how my products have come out every year. They are the most pleasant and helpful people you could work with. I wouldn’t have it any other way and I recommend Electra Tarp to ANYONE in the Winter Guard Activity!”

Call it immaturity, but we still love it when our friends come by to play. Watching great musicians perform with the products you've created is a wonderful feeling. It fosters a sense of pride that encompasses everything we do. Are we the largest? No. But we're working on that. The best? Some think so...but we'll leave that judgment up to others. Let's just say that, so far...we've aced Semi Finals with a perfect score in Percussion Quality, and we’ll see you in Dayton.
We would like to thank all the Ensembles that have chosen Innovative Percussion Drumsticks and Mallets as they face another year of great WGI competition. You are all champions to us.

A Build-your-own DVD Experience! WGI announces a revolution in pageantry arts video! WGI
ON DEMAND is an amazing build-your-own DVD system. At wgiondemand.com you can mix and match individual World Championships performances from various years and place them on one DVD, or purchase the entire volume of finalists on DVD. The system will launch with 2003–1995 World Class Color Guard and Percussion performances allowing you to make your very own “Fans’ Favorite DVD.” More performances will be released throughout the year. Similar to an iTunes concept, each WGI ON DEMAND DVD includes five individual shows for only $20.00, and after that each show is a $1.99 additional. Each disk can contain up to fifteen shows per disk maximum.
Have fun building your own DVD!
