WELCOME! Dear WGI Community, We are so excited to return home for WGI’s 45th anniversary. The indoor activity has weathered many storms over the past two years, but we came out stronger on the other side due to our community’s unwavering dedication to the marching arts. To the thousands of directors, staff, volunteers, and performers, it is because of you that WGI continues to thrive after 45 incredible years. I hope all audience members will admire the spectacular skills on display this weekend, a trademark of every World Championships event. All performers, regardless of score, deserve thunderous applause for the countless hours of work and preparation that they poured into these competitive programs. We would like to thank the educators and family members who support these performers in their journey. Without your efforts, their growth and development would not be possible. Thank you to all our volunteers and staff. You are the backbone of the organization that makes events like this possible. Without your fierce love of our activity, we could not provide opportunities like this to young people all over the world. You have earned a very special place in our hearts and have our eternal gratitude. It is my hope that this World Championships proves to be as inspiring to you, the spectator, as the young people who inspire all of us at WGI. This event is proof that with a thriving community, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve anything we work towards together. It promises to be a very special weekend filled with memorable performances, a nostalgic look back to our origins, and a celebration of what’s to come. On behalf of WGI Sport of the Arts, we extend our sincere congratulations and best wishes to all the performers, past and present, who make WGI the vibrant organization it is today. Very truly yours,

JUDGING The judging community is a body of professionals often trained in dance, theatre, and art. Their color guard experience combined with extensive study, guided by WGI’s judge philosophy, give WGI’s judges the expertise to reward the efforts and achievements of today’s performers. After a period of judging for one of WGI’s Circuit Partners, WGI Color Guard Judges undergo a rigorous training program including a home study, a Judge Academy, an extensive trial period of judging guards in every class, and participating in a continuing education program that encompasses annual study requirements and clinics.

General Effect Judges reward the effectiveness of the total program and all its components. Effects are broken down into 3 categories: • Intellectual Effects are thought-provoking, complex in design, and consider the visual approach to musical settings. • Emotional Effects include adrenaline effects, as well as effects covering the broad range of human emotions. • Aesthetic Effects include the artistic viewpoint, the impact of the setting, and how the performers create effects within the environment created by the designer. Aesthetic Effects also cover choreographic considerations of equipment and movement. This caption is about the whole package and how it is brought to life through the efforts of the performers.

D ESI G N A N A LYS I S - 2 0 P TS Design Judges analyze the quality of the design and the depth of the composition of the program as a whole. These judges analyze the “blueprint” of the program, as well as the fulfillment of the composition by the ensemble. Special consideration is given to the technical and expressive excellence demonstrated by the performers. Along with assessing the collective skill set of the total ensemble, a close look is given to each moment in time and how it relates, through time, to the entirety of the program.

Equipment Judges analyze the performers’ challenges illustrated by the range and variety of efforts presented through the manipulation of flags, rifles, sabres, and other props. Equipment judges will also analyze performer excellence through training, timing, technique, and the achievement of simultaneous responsibilities. The Equipment Judge is located lower in the stands so they can sample individual performers and make direct comparisons between performers.

Movement Judges are also located lower in the stands. They analyze the range and depth of the

total movement vocabulary. Movement Judges consider the isolated dance moments, as well as

the movement focus during combined efforts of movement and equipment. The Movement Judge,

John Whelchel

through the assessment of kinesthetic awareness, also considers individual challenges presented

by the staging. Special consideration is made regarding the training, excellence, and achievement of the performers, as well as the uniformity from performer to performer. 07

WHAT IS WGI? Winter Guard International (WGI) Sport of the Arts is the world’s premier non-profit organization producing indoor color guard, percussion, and wind ensemble competitions. It is called the Sport of the Arts because it brings music and motion to life through performance in a competitive format. Now entering its 45th year in 2022, the sport continues to evolve and grow. This season there were more than 40,000 participants at the regional level, and more than 12,000 participants competing at the 2022 WGI World Championships.

WE RISE CELEB A LOOK AT WGI’S GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.

1978 COLOR GUARD The first World Championships event on April 14, 1978, saw 29 guards converge at a Chicago area high school in preliminary competition. The top 15 groups then competed in finals the following day, resulting in the first-ever champion of WGI, Quasar.

set of competition rules, establish unity in judging techniques, and provide a national championship event. The organization that would bloom from this meeting was known as Winter Guard International.

20

2015 WINDS After an incredible exhibition by the Northglenn Performance Ensemble and Aimachi Winds the year prior, WGI held its inaugural Winds World Championships event at the University of Dayton Arena in 2015. Twenty groups competed for the championship title in WGI’s newest division.

RATING 45 YEARS THE ‘80s – TH E FORMATIVE YEARS In the first decade of WGI’s existence, the organization served as a melting pot, blending the different regional styles of color guard together through unified judging criteria. WGI also expanded its international reach during this time, hosting regional competitions in Canada and the UK.

THE ‘90s – BRANCHING OUT The 1990s saw some of the most significant changes to the organization and its activities, with many groups continually moving away from the military approach and embracing innovative program design. WGI also created and implemented the three-tiered class system we still use today, including A, Open, and World.

THE ‘00s – A DECADE OF GROWTH The turn of the century was an era of rapid growth for WGI. As the color guard division continued expanding, surpassing 300+ groups in attendance at World Championships, the number of indoor percussion groups was also growing exponentially each year. In 2005, the percussion division outgrew WGI’s single-weekend championships capacity and warranted moving their event to a separate weekend.

THE ‘10s – PUSHING BOUNDARIES The 2010s saw the highest levels of production value in the activity’s history, with groups from all three divisions boasting ground-breaking program designs and astounding performer skill sets. At an organizational level, WGI’s international presence continued expanding by hosting regionals in countries like China, Costa Rica, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. 21

INFINITY Percussion

The Competition is Heavy, The Drums Should be Light Capture the competitive edge with TAMA’s new Fieldstar marching drums. Fresh innovations are employed across the entire lineup to keep performers feeling fast on their feet, and the music sounding great. The new snares are especially lightweight thanks to a batter-side magnesium edge ring, low profile strainer, and aluminum snare guards. These features help trim the weight by just about 2lbs, ensuring all of the player’s energy is dedicated solely to their performance.
