WGI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS! It is an exciting year for us as we reflect on our history and celebrate the growth of our beloved Sport of the Arts. From our first championships in 1978 with 29 color guards to today’s two-weekend extravaganza showcasing over 600 color guards, percussion ensembles, and winds groups, our first four decades show that WGI is only getting started. Our reach now extends beyond North America and new audiences are now discovering that participation in activities like the indoor marching arts enhance lives while motivating young people to achieve their life’s goals. The lessons learned will inspire them to be better citizens and develop the leaders of tomorrow. I hope all in attendance will marvel at the skills on display that have long been the trademark of this event. The hours of tireless training that go into all the productions, regardless of the score, deserve all of our collective recognition. Please reward each and every performer with your applause. We would like to thank the educators and family members who support these performers in their journey. Without your efforts, their growth and development would not be possible. Thank you to the volunteers and staff that make this event possible. Without your infinite hours of dedication and love of our sport, we could not provide this and other performance opportunities to young people from all over the world. You have earned a very special place in our hearts and have our eternal gratitude. It is my hope that this world championship proves to be as inspiring to you, the spectator, as much as the young people who inspire all of us at WGI. This event is proof that with a thriving learning community, students can achieve anything in their wildest dreams. It promises to be a very special weekend filled with memorable performances, a nostalgic look back to our origins, and a celebration of what’s to come. On behalf of WGI Sport of the Arts, we extend our sincere congratulations and best wishes to all the performers, past and present, who make WGI the vibrant organization it is today. Very truly yours,
Ron Nankervis Executive Director, CEO

After a period of of judging for one of WGI’s Circuit Partners, WGI Color Guard Judges undergo a rigorous training program including a home study, a Judge Academy, an extensive period of trial judging guards in every class, and participating in a continuing education program that encompasses annual study requirements and clinics.
GENERAL EFFECT- 40 PTS
Two judges - 20 points each General Effect Judges reward the effectiveness of the total program and all its components. Effects are broken down into 3 categories: · Intellectual Effects are thought provoking, complex in design, and consider the visual approach to musical settings. · Emotional Effects include adrenaline effects, as well as effects covering the broad range of human emotions. · Aesthetic Effects include the artistic viewpoint, the impact of the setting, and how the performers create effects within the environment created by the designer. Aesthetic Effects also cover choreographic considerations of equipment and movement. This caption is about the whole package and how it is brought to life through the efforts of the performers.
DESIGN ANALYSIS- 20 PTS Design Judges analyze the quality of the design and the depth of the composition of the program as a whole. These judges analyze the “blueprint” of the program as well as the fulfillment of the composition by the ensemble. Special consideration is given to the technical and expressive excellence demonstrated by the performers. Along with assessing the collective skill set of the total ensemble, a close look is given to each moment in time and how it relates, through time, to the entirety of the program.

EQUIPMENT- 20 PTS Individual Analysis
Equipment Judges analyze the performers’ challenges illustrated by the range and variety of efforts presented through the manipulation of flags, rifles, sabres, and other props. Equipment judges will also analyze performer excellence through training, timing, technique, and the achievement of simultaneous responsibilities. The Equipment Judge is located lower in the stands so they can sample individual performers and make direct comparison between performers.
MOVEMENT- 20 PTS Individual Analysis
Movement Judges are also located lower in the stands. They analyze the range and depth of the total movement vocabulary. Movement Judges consider the isolated dance moments as well as the movement focus during combined efforts of movement and equipment. The Movement Judge, through the assessment of kinesthetic awareness, also considers individual challenges presented by the staging. Special consideration is made regarding the training, excellence, and achievement of the performers, as well as the uniformity from performer to performer.

Shirlee Whitcomb gathered in California to develop an outline for an organization that would govern the indoor color guard activity, provide uniform rules and scoring for guards from coast to coast, and hold a national championship event in the season in which the groups competed.
The moniker “Winter Guard International” was chosen to reflect the time of year when the units competed, with a championship event to be held in April. At that time, smaller local circuits sponsored indoor guard shows, with the most prominent being Massachusetts and New York

of competing guards at Championships exploded to over 300, but the percussion side of the activity had already been established for nearly a decade, with approximately 80 drumlines in attendance. Administratively, the organization had expanded as well, although not quite so dramatically. In year eight, Lindstrom hired an office assistant, with another person added in year 10. Today, the WGI staff includes event, video, marketing, participant, bookkeeping, and ticketing personnel.
The first two Championships had all the guard grouped into a single class. In year three, an Independent A class was added. The 1984 event saw the addition of a Scholastic class, with a second Scholastic class added the following year. 1993 was a watershed year in WGI history. The current classification setup debuted for the 1993 Finals, with both Independent and Scholastic divisions divided into World, Open, and A classes. That same season, the organization leadership took a leap of faith by adding a Percussion
