Judging WGI Percussion Judges undergo a rigorous training program. Many are educators and professionals whose life work has been reinforced by their indoor percussion experiences, with each looking to reward the efforts and achievements of today’s performers.

MARCHING PERCUSSION EFFECT-MUSIC: 30 POINTS Effect-Music judges evaluate the Overall Effect and the Music Effect. They are charged with crediting the overall effectiveness of all the elements presented by the ensemble and consider the musical elements involved in creating an engaging program, as well as the performers’ ability to connect with the audience.

EFFECT-VISUAL: 20 POINTS Effect-Visual judges evaluate the Overall Effect and the Visual Effect. They are charged with crediting the overall effectiveness of all the elements presented by the ensemble and consider the visual elements involved in creating an engaging program, as well as the performers’ ability to connect with the audience.

MUSIC (30 POINTS) Music judges look at the Composition of a show (orchestration, musical design, range of content, and clarity of intent) as well as the Performance Quality (sound production, musicianship, rhythmic clarity, and ensemble cohesiveness) of the musicians.

VISUAL (20 POINTS) Visual judges consider both the Composition of the show (orchestration, visual design, motion, and clarity of intent) and the Performance Quality (accuracy, movement, presence, uniformity, and cohesiveness) of the performers.

CONCERT PERCUSSION ARTISTRY: 50 POINTS An intense look is given to the program and the fulfillment of those programmatic choices. Communication, musicianship, presence, and expression make up a few of the components being evaluated.

MUSIC: 50 POINTS The judge listens with a critical ear for the clarity of the intent of the composition, while considering performance qualities including musicianship, quality of sound, and technical excellence.

Who are we? Winter Guard International (WGI) Sport of the Arts is the world’s premier non-profit organization producing indoor color guard, percussion, and wind ensemble competitions. It is called the Sport of the Arts because it brings music and motion to life through performance in a competitive format. Now entering its 42nd year in 2019, the sport continues to evolve and grow. This season there were more than 46,000 participants at the regional level, and more than 15,000 participants competing at the 2019 WGI World Championships.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING In competitive marching timing is everything. Every note, step, and move is critical to performing at the highest possible level. In that same vein, January 2019 was the perfect time to announce a new partnership between TAMA and Bergerault Percussions Contemporaines. Now, innovative ensembles wanting to break from the ordinary have an easy choice in TAMA | Bergerault.

We would like to wish the very best to all of our performers competing at WGI 2019.
