PERSONAL STATEMENT A range of environmental issues such as climate change, illustrate that the landscape architecture is a mirror of society, a process in which people and nature work together. Contemporary landscape architects bear the social responsibilities to consider how to integrate natural evolution with urban development processes into a sustainable artificial ecosystem. The experience of volunteering to teach in one of the poorest villages of China made me realize that landscape architecture practice is called to promote social justice and advocate for a sustainable and better life for the unheard. As a designer, what I have always desired is to sympathize with people, honor their actual needs, and give an authentic response to the site. To me, landscape architect is to plant. We just carefully “plant” space for life that allows stories to naturally grow. It is a dynamic and living process, inviting everyone to get the beauty of space and create their own value. I am determined to become a designer who promotes social inclusion, participation, justice, and sustainable development. For my postgraduate study, I hope to participate in more large-scale planning projects and focus on the welfare of the marginalized groups, such as accessibility, resources, and recognition. After graduation, I plan to work in NGOs or community-led organizations to achieve my goal. I am drawn to the University of Edinburgh as it does not only provide students with systematic design skills, a critical awareness of the context, but also inspire designer’s unique approach towards creativity. I believe that through the structured landscape architecture program at the University of Edinburgh, I would be capable to apply my knowledge at school to practice, facilitate the transformation of contemporary landscapes, and eventually become a landscape architect that advocates for social good – to create a sustainable, better life for people.

01 REBIRTH OF WATER INTRODUCE A SUSTAINABLE WATER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR VILLAGES IN KARST AREA · Location: Guizhou, China · Duration: 05-07.2020 (Field Research), 09.2021 (Program Design) · Type: Landscape Design, Individual Work · Instructor: Annabel Wang (641574601@qq.com)

Dagou village, located in a karst landscape area, suffers from severe engineering water shortages and ecological problems. This has become one of the major factors limiting local development. I look forward to the integrated utilization of local water resources to stimulate the revival and development of the ecology, economy and culture of the village. As a systemic solution, I have given a staged strategy on a large scale. Over the course of 5 years, the proposal is to build a water management system to alleviate the water shortage. In the next 5 years, the strategy is to restore plant diversity and establish ecological planting patterns. Meanwhile, I plan to develop agricultural products processing industry and local tourism, promoting the return of talents and the revival of traditional culture, and finally achieve the enhancement of ecological and socioeconomic benefits. 02 BACK TO THE FEAST USING CULTURAL FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES TO REVITALISE URBAN COMMUNITIES AND BUILD RESILIENT LANDSCAPES · Location: Wuhan, China · Duration: 04.2021 - 06.2021 · Origin: Competition Program for 2021 ASLA Students Awards · Type: Urban Design, Group Work · Team Member: Jiaqi Zhang, Hanyu Huang, Anqi Zhang · Role in Team: Context Analysis (80%), Concept and Strategy (70%) Masterplan Drawing (70%), Seasonal Feast Design (70%), Module Design and Rendering (60%) · Instructor: Ran Yang (bluesourcebeck@gmail.com) Xin Xia (xiaxin@mail.hzau.edu.cn) The "Ten-thousand-Family Feast", a massive local party, held in the Lunar New Year, is a unique tradition of Baibuting community in Wuhan. However, our team found that the feast is just a formalized project and leads to serious waste, low participation willingness. Meanwhile, the unreasonable use of the community’s public space also limits the development of this traditional activity. We hope to address a range of spatial issues in the community while revitalising the tradition. Large cultural landscapes are combined with modular landscapes for festival activities and everyday use. We hope to help residents regain the right to use community space by establishing flexible organizational and participation forms for the feast, and eventually increasing the connection among the residents. 03 HEALING POWER OF NATURE TOTORO PARK : TRANSLATING MOVIE SCENES TO HEALING SPACE · Location: Wuhan, China · Duration: 09.2020-11.2020 · Type: Landscape Design,Individual Work · Origin: Landscape Architecture Studio Work(II) in HZAU · Instructors: Hongfei Qiu (qiuhongfei@mail.hzau.edu.cn), Xin Xia (xiaxin@mail.hzau.edu.cn)

Research has found that psychological sub-health is prevalent among young people today. With the objective of relieves urban residents' mental stress, the site adjacent to the university is designed as a comprehensive healing park. Using the ACT theory as a framework, the spaces are created according to the different psychological and behavioural needs of each healing stage. At the same time, inspired by the film "Totoro", I extract the image of Totoro as a "nature god" the connotation of "healed by nature", translating elements from the film scenes to the park space design. I tend to emphasize the power of plants, so the project pays special attention to the plant landscapes. For the selection of plant varieties, I use more ornamental and aromatic plants, hopeing to achieve specific healing effects through their color and scent characteristics. Besides, use plants to define and create space. Through well-designed plants assemblages and spatial composition, to meet people’s different needs. 04 UPLOAD TO THE CLOUD DESIGN FOR THE GARDEN OF FUTURE · Location: Chengdu, China · Duration: 02.2021 · Origin: the 3rd BFU International Garden-making Festival · Type: Garden and Bamboo Structure Design, Group Work · Team Member: Xiao Feng, Jiaqi Zhang, Anqi Tang · Role in team: Concept Design (60%), Parameter Model Design (50%), Interaction Design (100%), Modeling and Rendering(50%) · Instructor: Xin Xia (xiaxin@mail.hzau.edu.cn) Under the proposition of designing a garden of the future, how to integrate the concept of the future into the structure? The cloud technology enables limited physical space to expand in the virtual world. In the future, the humanized use of information makes part of the personal consciousness can be uploaded to the cloud to realize the consciousness sharing of all mankind. This design intend to build a poetic garden of the future, which is also a metaphor for a future world with shared thinking. The micro-garden features a bamboo structure where people can enjoy flowers, meditate and interact with each other. At the same time, an interactive app is introduced so that people's movements are captured through the mobile device and projected on the LED screen, which expands the interaction between people and the garden. Besides, people can also share the beauty they find in the cloud through the app.
