S
wedish power company Vattenfall has unveiled plans for a vast network in south-east and east London that could provide enough heat for the equivalent of more than 500,000 homes by the 2040s. Ever wondered what’s in those yellow containers you see heading up the Thames on barges? Waste management group Cory receives up to 785,000 tonnes of non-recyclable rubbish each year, which it processes at its Belvedere incinerator near Thamesmead. The company says this approach currently saves 150,000 tonnes of carbon from escaping into the environment by reducing the amount of refuse going to landfill while also generating electricity to power 160,000 homes. The catalyst for Vattenfall’s project was the Government’s decision to award funding to Cory to adapt its Belvedere plant so heat can be extracted from the process to heat homes locally. Construction on that scheme is due to start in with the first ro erties connected to the network by 2024. A second power-generating incinerator at the site, which was given planning permission last year, will be capable of supplying an additional 10,500 homes with heat by 2030. The aim is for households to get their heat from a central source rather than using ine cient standalone boilers powered by fossil fuels. Vattenfall intends to develop the heat network in phases with the first covering hamesmead Plumstead and parts of Woolwich. The second would see parts of Charlton along the Thames and Greenwich Peninsula connected up. The plan is then to roll out the service to Royal Docks and Beckton and Barking by the 2040s. Vattenfall Heat UK managing director Mike Reynolds said: “We’ve got to think big when it comes to removing emissions from heating, on a scale which works for global cities like London. “District heating presents the best option for consumers in urban
areas. It’s the cheapest source of low-carbon heat, it’s reliable and it’s resilient against energy shocks. “Most of London’s 3.5million homes, and thousands of commercial buildings, are heated using fossil fuels. Yet there are abundant other sources of cleaner heat, such as the ground, water or waste heat from industrial processes. “Vattenfall’s European expertise, delivering heat to 1.9million customers in Berlin, Uppsala and Amsterdam, proves that these types of project are possible across cities and will work well in urban areas in the UK. “By partnering with organisations like Cory we can build these networks at the scale needed to bring down the costs to building owners and consumers, making district heating the most cost-effective way to decarbonise heat in urban areas.” Vattenfall says its plan is to provide 250,000 homes with heat from the scheme alongside commercial and public buildings. It estimates such networks can reduce carbon dioxide emissions from heating by as much as 90% when compared with individual gas boilers. Should the full network be built, Vattenfall says it could reduce the amount of CO2 entering the atmosphere by 26million tonnes. Cory chief executive Dougie Sutherland said: “Cory is a company that embraces innovation and is committed to tackling the net zero challenge head on. “One of the ways we do this is through partnership and sharing expertise. Our heat network project with Vattenfall is a prime example of how a collaboration can help the UK to address an urgent issue – the decarbonisation of heat. “As Cory celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, we look forward to supplying spare heat from our operations to kickstart a heat revolution in one of the world’s major cities.”

Despite the boost in supply of housing due to the ongoing regeneration of the area and the construction of thousands of homes locally, a study by property services firm has made confident claims that the Royal Docks housing market would outperform both London as a whole and the UK in the coming years. Its recent report on the area said average sales prices locally had already recovered from the halt of market activity due to the pandemic and had increased by nearl in the ear to une .
