The Number One magazine for the care sector
Wales’ unsung heroines and heroes sought A SEARCH has been launched to find the unsung heroes and heroines of social care in Wales who have “risen magnificently” to the challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic. Entries are being sought for the 2022 Wales Care Awards to honour the skill and devotion of people working in social care looking after vulnerable children and adults. The event is making a return after being cancelled during the last two years because of the pandemic The awards were introduced by Care Forum Wales to inspire excellence in the care sector. Mario Kreft MBE, chair of Care Forum Wales and founder of the Wales Care Awards, said: “Care Forum Wales is engaged at every level in trying to raise the status of the social care profession and in particular the value to society of the many thousands of social care workers who provide such an important service to communities across Wales. “The Wales Care Awards is now firmly established as one of the highlights in the Welsh social care calendar, although over the past two years everything had to be put on hold because of the pandemic. “Front line staff working in care homes and in domiciliary care have been in the eye of the coronavirus storm, protecting the most vulnerable people in Wales
from the ravages of this virus. “The pandemic has caused unprecedented challenges and our fantastic workforce responded heroically, putting their own lives on the line to shield their beloved residents and staff.” This year’s event will take place at City Hall in Cardiff on Friday, October 21. The deadline for nominations is Friday, April 29. Anybody who has been nominated over the past two years will be automatically entered this time. Shortlisted finalists will receive a Gold, Silver or Bronze Wales Care Award and an invitation for themselves and a guest to the Oscars-style gala award ceremony. Mario added: “This is an opportunity to nominate the champions and ambassadors of social care and contribute to raising public awareness of the vital contribution of our sector, a contribution that has been even greater during the nightmare of the past two years. “It is occasions like the awards night that enables Care Forum Wales to recognise and celebrate such skills, talents and heroic commitment.” The event will be hosted by opera singer Wynne Evans, perhaps best known these days as Gio Compario, the moustachioed tenor from the Go Compare TV ads.
Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville has praised a new community meeting room sponsored by a Sussex care home. Hugh, who plays Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham in the popular historical drama, toured the Colten Care Wellington Grange learning room during his official unveiling of the newly restored Graylingwell Chapel in Chichester. The independent charity Chichester Community Development Trust has raised almost £2m to help transform the Chapel into a café, meeting and workshop rooms, with children’s play area and open space used by the community during the day, and functioning as an events space in the evenings. Hugh said: “It is a pleasure to see this very positive project brought to life.” Hugh Bonneville is pictured with Colten Care’s hotel services manager Fergus Davitt.
Care home hosts pop-up cat cafe A PAIR of fluffy felines were the headline attraction at a pop-up cat café that was organised for residents at a dementia care home in Wellington. Sibling kittens Mocha and Chino enjoyed a couple of hours being the centre of attention at Camelot House and Lodge, where they were taken by volunteers from St Giles Animal Centre in Wrantage, near Taunton. Richard Dempslake, activities co-ordinator for Camelot House and Lodge, said: “The kittens were running around and making our residents laugh, playing with their toys and being given

Care home partners with equine therapy provider A WEST Midlands care home has called upon the powers of animal therapy — partnering with a local pony experience provider to bring joy and comfort to its bed-bound residents. Willow Rose in Willenhall recently welcomed Moomin and Lollipop from Lollipop Pony Parties — two intuitive Shetland ponies who won the hearts of both residents and staff with their gentle, affectionate temperament. Home manager Debbie Pugh said: “Having Moomin and Lollipop visit the home was an amazing experience for all our residents and seeing all those smiling faces is something we’ll never forget. “The past two years have been a challenge for everyone at Willow Rose and the loving, intuitive nature of the ponies helped provide a welcome break from the turbulence of the pandemic.” Residents were given the opportunity to interact with the horses throughout the day, with plenty of petting and selfies on offer. The visit served not only as an exciting new activity for the home, but also as a boost to the emotional wellbeing of many residents who have endured the
isolation of lockdown and the hardships that come with this. The professionally trained therapy horses were escorted around residents’ rooms and spent time in the communal lounge areas to ensure everyone had an opportunity to interact with them, regardless of their physical condition. Macc Care, who operate the home, will continue to call upon the services of Lollipop Pony Parties — with plans in place for future visits to other homes within the group. Debbie added: “Many of our bedbound residents struggle to engage with traditional care home activities, however, the nature of this visit meant that the ponies could be brought directly to their bedside. “This offered an empowering experience for these residents and further highlighted the impact animal therapy can have on someone’s life. “By popular demand, we will definitely invite Moomin, Lollipop and their amazing handlers back to Willow Rose in the future. In the meantime, we will enjoy looking back over the amazing images captured and relive the joy of the day.”

Penny Gladding with the cardboard cut-out of Liam Neeson.
Resident marks anniversary with help from famous face A RESIDENT at Signature at Purley celebrated her 10th anniversary living at the care home with the help of cake, a glass of bubbly and her favourite movie star. Penny Gladding, who turns 94 in April, enjoyed a Liam Neeson-themed celebration which team members at the care home organised to mark the special occasion, and even included a life-sized cut out of the movie star. She said: “I can’t believe it’s been 10
years already; I really enjoy every day and I have no complaints; everything is taken care of, and the Signature at Purley team are wonderful. I can’t fault anything. I love Liam Neeson because he is a fantastic actor and very handsome, my favourite films of his are Taken 1 and Taken 2.” The retired children’s nursery nurse and qualified squash coach moved into the luxury care home with her late husband Claude in 2012.

AN EDINBURGH care home has recorded a strong bounce back from the last two years of lockdowns – with record occupancy numbers as it looks to expand its team for 2022. Despite the challenges brought on the care home sector, Cramond Residence is optimistic for the year ahead with occupancy rates up 65 per cent on this point last year. The home is set to hire additional members of staff to take its team to more than 100, in response to the continued growing demand. Client liaison manager Christian Daraio said: “After an unprecedented two years for the industry, we finally have positive momentum. “Our clients and their families are placing their trust in us and we’re thrilled to be reaching record occupancy levels. “The biggest obstacle we now have to us providing care for more older people is recruitment. “We’re hopeful that we can cut through the current workforce crisis by offering some of the highest salaries in Edinburgh, competitive terms and conditions and a great team environment. “Putting the wellbeing of our residents and staff has been and continues to be our main priority and as we continue on the path to normality, we are looking forward to increasing our offering over the coming months.” Located in Cramond to the north of the city, the care home was launched in late 2018 and offers nurse-led care, as well as respite and dementia specialist services and offers small group living in nine homes. Throughout the pandemic it has
Christian Daraio been able to use its purpose-built layout and air filtration system and laundry facilities to minimise crossinfection. The home is looking for applications from lifestyle coordinators, qualified nurses and catering assistants, with particularly high demand for nursing staff and care assistants. Included in the home’s current offering for residents is a tailored monthly activity programme, curated by its dedicated lifestyle team, bespoke physiotherapy sessions by boutique physiotherapy experts, balanced as well as specialist dementia care. Throughout the duration of the pandemic, the home offered a range of virtual activities, including linking up with the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions to deliver a programme of interactive tours of some of the country’s most famous attractions, to keep residents stimulated and engaged.

A Dorset care home threw a platinum-standard party for a couple celebrating 70 years of marriage. Colten Care’s Newstone House in Sturminster Newton marked Colin and Do Malcolm’s anniversary with bunting, balloons, champagne and a specially-made cake. The celebration was attended by the couple’s three children – Fiona, Neil and Bill – and there was even a congratulatory message received from Her Majesty the Queen. Companionship team leader Karlene Horswill said: “When Colin and his children asked if they could come in and mark the platinum anniversary in some small way around the Covid restrictions, we wanted to make it as special as possible for them. Throughout the day Do and Colin remarked what a wonderful time they were having. It was truly special to see them all together and celebrating their long and happy marriage.”

Care provider is banned from running companies
Homecare group’s new recruitment campaign BLUEBIRD Care has launched a fresh recruitment drive showcasing how its care assistants do #MoreThan simply deliver care. The campaign launch comes as the Government reiterates its tenyear vision for placing people at the heart of adult social care following the launch of the Levelling Up White Paper. Marketing and communications director Hannah Banfield, said: “This new recruitment drive aims to highlight how a job in social care is #MoreThan just a job – it’s a career where you can feel valued, knowing you are making a difference to someone’s day working in your local community. “A career in care is so much #MoreThan just sharing a cup of tea, and it’s #MoreThan just providing personal care. It’s a fulfilling, valued
career path. People of all ages and lifestyles can find a care role that works for them and help fill the growing demand for care at home. “We would like to thank all our wonderful care assistants who have kept all of our customers safe throughout the pandemic and encourage anyone interested in a career with Bluebird Care to get in touch.” The operator hopes that by showcasing how caring for others is a worthwhile career, they will be able to attract applications for job openings across their nationwide network. The #MoreThan campaign is supported by the Bluebird Care network of more than 200 offices across the country celebrating how their care assistants help customers to live purposeful lives in the comfort of their own homes.
THE boss of a Southend-on-Sea care provider has been disqualified from running companies for five years after abusing the tax regime Caring Carers Limited was incorporated in January 2011, trading out of premises in the city. The company provided care services to elderly and infirm residents in the Southend community and contracts for care were obtained through GPs, local hospitals and the local authority. Nomalisho Kawadza Moyo from Southend-on-Sea was appointed director of Caring Carers shortly after incorporation. Nine years later, however, the care provider entered into creditors’ voluntary liquidation in February 2020. The company’s insolvency triggered an investigation by the Insolvency Service before investigators discovered that from at least April 2017, Nomalisho failed to ensure Caring Carers registered for PAYE tax with the tax authorities. This resulted in a settlement worth more than £118,000. Further enquires uncovered Nomalisho Moyo had failed to submit company tax returns and the company made no payments to the tax authorities from 2017 onwards despite making payments to a
connected company of more than £30,000. When Caring Carers went into liquidation, the tax authority was owed more than £296,000 including unpaid tax, penalties, the settlement due and interest. Lawrence Zussman, deputy head of insolvent investigations, said: “Whilst Nomalisho Moyo ensured her company provided care to residents in the local community, she totally neglected her company’s tax responsibilities. “This is appalling behaviour and through her actions has deprived the public purse and caused suffering to the taxpayer. “This should serve as a stark warning to directors that they must pay their taxes and where abuse of the tax regime is uncovered, we will pursue sanctions against rogue directors.” On February 23, 2022 the secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy accepted an undertaking from Nomalisho for five years. Nomalisho is now disqualified from acting as a director of a company and from directly, or indirectly, becoming involved in the promotion, formation or management of a company, without the permission of the court.
Residents go football crazy over team’s visit
Staff and residents at Rogers House Residential Care Home have launched a craft project In a bid to bring some smiles to their community. Inspired by Random Acts of Kindness Day and similar community projects, staff and residents hid decorated rocks around Wigmore for others to find as part of ‘Rogers Rocks’. The residents spent time painting and decorating their rocks and writing inspirational messages on them. They would like anyone who finds a rock to write on Rapport Housing and Care’s Facebook page where they found it, as well as giving a clue as to where they plan to hide it next.
RESIDENTS at Care South’s Fern Brook Lodge care home put their footballing skills to the test with another visit from the AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust team. They made their way around the home, making sure everyone was able to get involved, using specially designed seated football games to bring out the competitive streak in residents. The team then treated the residents to some expert demonstrations, talking everyone through the intense training and exercise regimes that the Cherries players undertake to reach the highest level. Hannah Thompson, activities lead at Fern Brook Lodge, said: “It was great to welcome the team from AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust back to Fern Brook Lodge.
“The residents absolutely love interacting with the coaches and getting involved in the activities. Who knew we had such a crop of sporting aces in our midst? We can’t wait for their next visit already. “The football sessions that AFC Bournemouth run are an important part of our activities at the home, helping to keep our residents engaged and active with input from the community.” The visit was thanks to the ongoing partnership between AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust and Care South, which began in 2014. The partnership allows residents, home care clients and staff to get involved in a variety of activities, including meeting players, coffee mornings, walking football and visits to the Vitality Stadium.

At the dazzling ceremony attended by leading industry figures and notfor-profit care providers, host Angela Rippon CBE presented the award which recognises excellence in using art to engage with vulnerable people - in this case, Belong’s apartment tenants. The win was determined by a panel comprising top professionals connected to care, including CEOs, academics and consultants, following interviews with nominees to explore the background and outcomes of their artistic endeavours. Stacey McCann, Belong interim chief executive and chief operating officer, said: “We’re thrilled to win the Creative Arts Award and it really is a win for all our customers and Bluecoat’s commissioned artists. “We strive to innovate throughout our approach to dementia care, and the arts have proven to be highly successful in engaging with our customers. “We’re also excited for the Where the Arts Belong exhibition, which opens at the Bluecoat in Liverpool
this month, and we invite everyone to come and see the work for themselves.” Since 2019, Belong’s customers have worked closely with criticallyacclaimed artists commissioned by Bluecoat to promote wellbeing through creative pursuits and evaluate the use of arts in care environments. Staff at Westmorland Homecare Poulton, Fylde and Wyre celebrate their ‘outstanding’ rating.
Homecare provider rated ‘outstanding’ A HOMECARE provider has been rated ‘outstanding’ overall following an inspection by the CQC. Westmorland Homecare Poulton, Fylde and Wyre, which has 70 staff, provides hundreds of hours of care each week, which enable elderly and often frail people in the area to live independently in their own home. Its services include home care, such as help with housekeeping and meal preparation, and personal care, such as help with dressing, bathing and getting in and out of bed. The CQC, the independent regulator of health and social care services in England, assessed five key areas – whether the service was safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led. The overall rating was ‘outstanding’. Registered manager Becky Ashmore said: “We strive to provide outstanding care and that has been recognised. “We started about three years ago in 2019 and we were going along nicely, then the Covid pandemic hit and we faced many challenges. To be rated as ‘outstanding’ is testament to the amazing care shown by our health care assistants and the way they have kept their clients and themselves safe. “In some cases, the families of clients who lived some distance away could not come to their relatives during lockdowns and our health care assistants had to step in to their roles to some extent. “The dedication and passion they have for their clients means it is natural for them to go above and beyond. We don’t ask them to do it – they do it because of the bond they have.” Becky highlighted how
Westmorland Homecare Poulton, Fylde and Wyre had contacted local garden centres, which donated pots, soil and sunflower seeds. Health care assistants took these to their clients’ homes and helped them to plant the seeds. “It was a little thing but it made a big difference to clients’ lives - it was something different and positive for them to focus on during the pandemic,” added Becky. In its overall summary the CQC stated: ‘People benefitted from exceptionally caring staff that provided continuity of support. The feedback from people demonstrated the caring and empowering culture was well embedded across the organisation.’ It added: ‘People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.’ In the ‘Is the service caring?’ section, the report stated: ‘People told us they were treated with respect. One person in a questionnaire commented: “You have given me friends who care for me”.’ And one relative stated: “They are brilliant carers, kind and caring, they go above and beyond.” Company director Russell Crossley added: “It’s never easy to be recognised as an outstanding care provider, especially throughout a pandemic and all the crisis that surrounds one. “The rating is recognition of our staff’s excellence, hard work, perseverance and an absolute positive impact on our clients’ lives.”
Accessible content launched SKILLS for Care has translated an overview of the Care Certificate into British Sign Language in videos now available on its website. The Care Certificate was developed jointly by Skills for Care, Health Education England and Skills for Health and is an agreed set of 15 standards that define the knowledge, skills, and behaviours expected of specific job roles in social care. It’s standard practice for new workers in social care to complete the Care Certificate as part of their
induction. An overview of each of the Care Certificate standards along with an introduction to the Care Certificate has been translated into BSL and is now available. To make the content as accessible as possible, the videos also feature subtitles and voiceover. To assure the quality and accessibility of the videos, Skills for Care worked in partnership with the Royal Association for Deaf People who filmed and edited the content with their in-house team.
HOME Instead has reached out to help elderly Ukrainians who are living with dementia and taking refuge with families in Poland by translating some of their dementia care material and making them available to any aid agency, charity or community-based project that may benefit from them. The new family dementia care guide offers expert advice and tips on how to best communicate with and support a person who is perhaps experiencing heightened confusion and stress as a result of dementia. It has been initially translated into Polish and Ukrainian. Learning and development lead at Home Instead, Sarah Gribbin, said: “For someone living with dementia, the world can seem a confusing place, so imagine the additional trauma and distress caused by the events happening in Ukraine. “Being uprooted from familiar surroundings and routines and a lack of usual access to family and friends can seriously exacerbate the symptoms of dementia. “The new guide is based on our expert and award winning dementia training that was developed for our care professionals and the wealth of materials we have already developed for families in the UK. “The material produced for Polish families and Ukrainian refugees succinctly takes the main points to offer what will be much-needed advice. How people respond to the person with dementia and their environment are factors that will
Home Instead UK CEO Martin Jones. significantly impact on quality of life.” The company is working with various aid agencies operating on the ground in Poland and other European countries to manage the dissemination of the material. Home Instead UK CEO Martin Jones added: “One can only start to imagine what the displaced Ukrainian people are going through. “We know that those living with dementia will be having a very difficult time and we are keen to offer practical, meaningful support to both refugees with dementia and those wonderful families who have opened up their homes to care for them.”
BCHA’s director of homelessness, health and wellbeing Caroline Moylan, Colten companion Paulina Trzcinska, customer service advisor Hayley McEvoy and clinical lead Emma Williams.
Residents show their support for people at risk of homelessness FUNDS raised by the residents of a Dorset care home will be used to improve the mental health of people at risk of homelessness. Colten Care’s Avon Cliff in Bournemouth chose to support the charitable housing association BCHA in 2021 and, despite Covid restrictions, has staged a variety of fundraising events on its behalf. Clinical lead Emma Williams said: “BCHA’s headquarters is very close to Avon Cliff and our residents and staff greatly admire its work in providing housing, education and support to many thousands of people each year. “At Christmas we were thrilled to donate a host of toys to BCHA for the
women and children at Bournemouth Women’s Refuge. “While Covid has prevented us from enjoying some of the larger events we would have held, our Easter party, a special air show event, our Christmas gala and assorted raffles have together raised £629 for BCHA. “It gives us a great deal of joy to think the money we have raised will be helping people who really need it.” BCHA’s director of homelessness, health and wellbeing Caroline Moylan met with Emma, Avon Cliff customer service advisor Hayley McEvoy and Colten companion Paulina Trzcinska to receive the donation and deliver her sincere thanks.

CARING NURSE CALL AND FALL PREVENTION

Advertiser’s announcement
Society launches fall fighter campaign THE Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents is calling on the public and organisations to take advantage of the charity’s free interactive resource in a bid to tackle the UK’s biggest forgotten killer – falls in the home. Falls are the single biggest cause of accidental injuries in the home and the largest cause of accidental death among over 65s in the UK. Every year more than a third of people over the age of 65 (and half of those over 80) have a fall that requires hospital treatment, costing the NHS and wider healthcare system more than £2.3billion annually. RoSPA’s relationships director Becky Hickman said: “It takes just 20 minutes to become a fall fighter, but by doing so you have the power to change, and even save the lives of loved ones, friends and family. “This simple but hugely effective project is free and open to all and we would encourage individuals or organisations to get involved. “This fall fighter community will now build, and in doing so, inspire others to prevent thousands of falls every year. By joining together, we can be a powerful and positive force for good.” As well as having a huge impact on society at large, falls can also have a devastating effect on individual lives; from physical injuries, long-term health effects and disabilities to trauma and poor mental health, loss of mobility, loneliness, social isolation and loss of independence. Despite this, making simple and low-cost changes can prevent falls from happening. RoSPA and RSA Insurance Group have launched the fall fighter initiative, which is designed to educate and empower people of all ages, transforming each of them into a “fall fighter” who can then help family, friends and others in their communities. To take part, simply complete a short free-to-
attend online awareness session and you will be provided with the information you need to make a real difference, including advice on reducing the risks and what to do if someone has a fall – both in the short and longer-term. In addition, organisations – workplaces, charities, community groups – can download a short self-led workshop to run with others, or can download our
SCORM compliant e-learning files to upload to your own e-learning system. Once you have completed the session, you will be awarded a certificate and receive a digital toolkit to help you spread the word and inspire others. Falls will be the main focus of RoSPA’s family safety week, which takes place from May 2 to 8 this year.

Revolutionary walking frame for older people one step closer to reality COMMON complaints associated with walking frames for older people could soon be a thing of the past, thanks to the residents at dementia care specialist, Belong, who are helping a team of academics and their partner, NRS Healthcare, with the development of a pioneering prototype set to revolutionise the traditional two-wheel walker. Researchers from the University of Salford and NRS Healthcare designers joined forces with Belong’s care villages to better understand the biomechanics of adults using walking frames. The aim is to eliminate the need for users to pick up the walking aid – sometimes called ‘Zimmer frames with front wheels’ – in order to cross raised door and carpet thresholds, as well as when changing direction. Zoe Robson, lead exercise specialist at Belong, said: “Traditional walking frames available haven’t evolved to meet the needs of older people. Picking the frame up to turn is not an option for everyone and those who can are at an increased risk of accidents, so we’re very pleased to be able to facilitate the development of a new version for safer turning, which is backed by science.” Belong’s residents have participated in the creation of prototypes, testing out and providing feedback at each stage of development. The result is an innovative walking frame, with a change in wheel
dimensions combined with a novel mechanism to enable a smooth walking experience which avoids the need to pick the frame up. It is also specially designed to prevent the aid unintentionally running sideways. The project is a Knowledge Transfer Partnership which is funded by NRS Healthcare and Innovate UK. The final product will have the potential to help the estimated 22 per cent of UK older adults who use twowheeled walkers indoors. Leading the project, Dr. Sibylle Thies, senior research fellow at the University of Salford School of Health & Society, said: “It has been a pleasure working with Belong’s residents to achieve our research goals. “Using their insights and studying the biomechanics of how they physically handle the prototype has been instrumental to the design process.” Zoe added: “Our residents have loved being involved in the project; we have established relationships with a number of universities to explore how the lives of older people can be enhanced and we place great emphasis on improving health and fitness – for all ages and even for those with limited mobility. “The pilot walker appears to be a new era for walking aids and will also help older people maintain their independence.”
Topping out ceremony for new care home AAT launches new, safer option for fall recovery HELPING residents after they have fallen is being given a new, safer solution – for everyone involved in the post fall pathway. AAT is bringing to market the Indeelift, a mobile platform “people picker upper”. The rechargeable battery-powered lift eliminates all the problems trying to get a conventional hoist with sling into place. Based around a steel platform, the Indeelift is simply slid into position for it to lift, gently and smoothly, the fallen person from floor to standing. The lift’s design coupled with integrated rise assist handles and safety belts optimise stability during the process. A range of versions enable even morbidly obese residents (up to 250kg/39st) to be lifted to their feet safely and with dignity. “Each care home experiences an average of at least three falls/month(1). The Care Inspectorate advises as good practice the use of lifting equipment to optimise the safety of residents when they have fallen, in appropriate circumstances(2), as part of the post fall pathway procedure,” said Peter Wingrave, AAT
director. “Indeelift brings a new, dignified approach to that safe transfer. It is probably the least invasive recovery solution, and offers the least possible risk, for the fallen person – and care staff.” Full details can be found on AAT’s website: https://www.aatgb.com/indeelift/ The link also enables quick and easy booking of a free, no obligation assessment. As part of its offering, AAT also provides full training for staff, and onward technical and maintenance support. Indeelift is the latest addition to AAT’s range of innoative and often unique handling and transfer equipment. Its brand-leading S-Max stairclimber is widely used across healthcare and blue light environments to overcome the short- or longterm barriers of steps and stairs when there is no available lift. The stairclimber is complimented by a raft of associated support solutions, for sitting, lying, sleeping and bathing. Enquiries: Visit www.aatgb.com/indeelift/
A MAJOR milestone has been marked at a new, state-of-the-art, 80 bed care home in Bath, Somerset which will include 15 luxurious suites alongside several state-of-the-art facilities. The site’s construction team was recently joined by Hallmark Care Homes’ chair Avnish Goyal, MP for Bath Wera Hobhouse and the Mayor of Bath Councillor June Player to mark the next stage of the build. As part of the special event, a stone block was pointed and a special commemorative plaque unveiled. Avnish said: “This year we will celebrate 25 years of building and running industry-leading care homes. “Following our success in 2021 winning residential care provider at three separate award ceremonies, we are excited to be able to create a luxurious and engaging new care community in Bath and deliver exceptional care to future residents. “Midford Manor Care Home will provide residents with a place where they feel safe and supported to live an active and fulfilled life. “Our caring and dedicated teams, will be provided with ongoing training and support and much thought and consideration has gone into the design of this beautiful new home.” Midford Manor is being built by Savista Developments at a cost of £16 million on a 1.6-acre site. The home will provide residential, nursing and dementia care and create 100 jobs.
Facilities will include a café which will serve complimentary hot drinks and homemade cakes and biscuits, a state-of-the-art cinema and a luxurious hairdressing salon and therapy room. In addition to spacious bedrooms with full en-suites, the home will have 15 exclusive suites which will include a fully fitted kitchenette with the latest appliances, a dining area, lounge as well as a large ensuite bathroom. Other innovations at the home include a wellness room which will support residents to build up strength and keep fit, a specialist dementia community which incorporates the latest technology and thinking in care home design, as well as an abundance of outdoor space on all floors. This includes terraces, a roof garden and garden bar where residents will be encouraged to take part in gardening and enjoy the sun all year round.

Foundation and charity team up to deliver safer ageing for older people
Residents offer support to Ukrainian refugees THE residents of Signature at Rosebery Manor in Epsom have come together to offer support and gifts to refugees affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The care home’s knit and natter group have teamed up to hand make blankets for Ukrainian refugees currently based in Poland, having fled their own country following Russia’s invasion last month. Kay Cox, chief operating officer of Signature Senior Living, said: “We have a number of residents in our homes who have themselves directly experienced conflict during their lifetime and its tragic consequences. “It is therefore inspiring to see our
residents supporting people who they will likely never get the chance to meet, including those that are currently being impacted by the extremely difficult situation the world is seeing unfold in Ukraine. “We believe even the smallest of gestures such as the one from our knit and natter group can bring comfort to those experiencing such desperate circumstances. We continue to support people in need, whether they are within our communities or beyond.” In addition to the knitted blankets, the Ukrainian refugees will also receive handwritten letters of support from residents and team members.
HALLMARK Foundation has formed a partnership with charity Hourglass to promote safer ageing, drive greater awareness of this form of abuse and examine ways to reduce its impact on older people and the people who care for them. The partnership is aiming to launch a flagship campaign this summer which will champion safer ageing for all and highlight the main challenges and opportunities for making progress in this area. Richard Robinson, CEO of Hourglass, said: “We are really excited to be embarking on this partnership with Hallmark Foundation and really appreciate the commitment they have made to making safer ageing a reality for all older people at risk of or experiencing abuse. “It’s an issue that affects so many people but it barely part of our national conversation. We are hoping our partnership and campaign can turn the tide on that.” The partnership, initially for a year, will see Hallmark Foundation funding major new research which will enable Hourglass to better locate areas of the UK where abuse is an issue and what measures can be taken to tackle it. The pioneering research will also examine how well the UK is doing
Stephen Burke when it comes to safer ageing and supporting people to age well. The two organisations are hoping to launch that research around World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in June. Stephen Burke, CEO of Hallmark Foundation, added: “It is shameful that this form of abuse is so widespread yet remains largely below the radar. “We are looking forward to collaborating with the team at Hourglass to see what we can do to push this issue up the agenda for the public, for government and for any organisations with a stake in supporting older people.”

Double success for Alive Activities at the Markel 3rd Sector Care Awards OLDER people’s charity Alive Activities has won two national awards at the Markel 3rd Sector Care Awards hosted at The Grand Hotel in Birmingham. The awards, organised by Care Management Matters and developed in conjunction with the National Care Forum, celebrate the hard work, dedication, innovation and excellence of those working in the not-for-profit sector who are making a positive impact on the lives of those in care. Alive Activities, a charity that provides meaningful activity to older people and training for their carers, is an example of one such organisation going above the fray to make a positive difference. CEO Isobel Jones said: “I’m incredibly proud of my team and am grateful for this recognition. The team have gone above and beyond to come up with truly innovative solutions that are responsive to peoples’ needs. “As a small, independent charity, winning these two awards is a testament to the hard work and passion we share in improving the lives of older people. This will only empower us to achieve more and continue making a positive difference.” These milestone recognitions come on the back of the tremendously impactful work Alive Activities

Since the pandemic hit, Alive has worked tirelessly on developing its digital strategy to facilitate easier access for older people and those living with dementia, and their carers. One big move in this direction has been the development of a dementiafriendly video platform called Alive On Demand. The technology award is in recognition of these efforts, which resulted in the creation of this innovative technology. Alive On Demand is a videostreaming platform with more than 200 unique videos and has, since its launch under six months ago, reached close to 1,000 older people and carers. The platform was designed with activities staff, care staff, carers and loved ones in mind to help them better engage and spark conversation with older people and learn more about individual and group interests. 80s TV star urges residents to boost their activity levels RESIDENTS in Care UK homes have been taking part in some unusual forms of exercise as part of a seasonal get fit campaign featuring The Green Goddess. The ‘Let’s Get Physical’ initiative sees teams in the operator’s homes across the country encourage residents to take care of their physical health by trying something new and exciting – whether that be a seated ballet class, disco yoga or even taking a trip down memory lane for a very special 1980s inspired workout. As part of the project, Care UK has partnered with popular 80s fitness star Diana Moran – the Green Goddess – best known for hosting ‘wake up and shape up’ on breakfast television in her trademark green leotard. Diana created some bespoke exercise videos for residents and recorded an inspirational video encouraging everyone to take exercise. She said: “I am delighted to support Care UK to encourage residents
across the country to get active by trying something new. “Regardless of age, keeping active is what keeps us young. Whether it’s walking a little further on your everyday stroll, or exercising a little longer, every day brings a new possibility. “Even for those less mobile, chair-based exercises can be just as beneficial. Nothing should get in the way of you being the best version of you!” Residents at Dashwood Manor, Mountfitchet House and Smyth Lodge dug out their sweatbands and neon legwarmers from the back of their wardrobes and warmed up for the official Care UK and Green Goddess workout, which included seated leg raises, arm reaches and neck circles. Residents and team members at Halecroft Grange care home opted to bring Bollywood to Hale Barns with a dance class led by professional Bollywood teacher Ambur Khan. Several other home teams have also
turned to dance as their chosen activity, including residents at Salisbury Manor, who have been ‘dosey-doeing’ at regular line dancing classes. Carol Brewster, home admissions advisor at Salisbury Manor, added: “We had a fantastic time taking part in our special line dancing sessions. “We are constantly looking for new and exciting ways to encourage residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, and with many residents enjoying dance, we thought line dancing seemed like a perfect activity. “Line dancing is a great form of exercise for older people, helping to improve strength and muscle function, increase balance and flexibility, as well as supporting cardiovascular and heart health. “Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, the dancing was a hit – we are looking forward to continuing the sessions throughout 2022. Who knows, we may have the next strictly come dancing winner in our midst.”
Residents at Llys Cyncoed and Pear Tree Court have both enjoyed seated ballet lessons from local dance teachers. And residents at Metchley Manor have also been embracing the 80s with a Flashdance inspired workout, At Bickerton House residents have taken part in some knockout activities by hosting their own boxercise class, complete with gloves and gowns. Heathlands House residents have taken on the newest fitness craze – ‘Noodlecise’. This new type of workout uses pool noodles in a variety of ways to build flexibility and strength, all while listening to high-energy music to help motivate movement. Inspired by the Tour de France, Amherst House took part in the ‘Tour de Horley’. Also getting on their bikes, residents at Ancasta Grove enjoyed a virtual cycle trip through Southampton, while Perry Manor raised funds for a local charity with its sponsored cycle ride.
Horse riding wish come true
Residents at Lower Meadow care home in Stratford-upon-Avon are excited to do some birdwatching after receiving bird boxes from the RSPB. The home received eight small bird boxes and one large one to put up around their gardens and the residents cannot wait for them to be installed. Home manager Rachel Walker said: “This is a great activity for all of us at Lower Meadow to get involved in and couldn’t come at a more perfect time, as this month’s dignity theme is all about the environment. Our residents love to birdwatch and we look forward to getting lots of lovely photos of the beautiful wildlife that we spot.”
STAFF at Oakview Lodge in Welwyn Garden City helped resident Jacqui Blandford fulfil her wish to go horseriding again. It was fulfilled as part of a ‘Make a wish’ initiative run by Country Court, the care and nursing home’s operator. Residents are given the opportunity to tell staff about somewhere they have always wanted to go or a special activity they always wanted to do. Jacqui, 73, who is registered blind, has been a keen horsewoman all her life. She first sat on a pony aged four-and-a-half and over the years she continued her passion for riding and spent lots of time with horses. During the last five years, and throughout the pandemic, Jacqui has been unable to ride so she jumped at the chance to tell staff about her wish. “Jacqui loves to ride and be out in the fresh air,” said wellbeing coordinator Rachel Davies. “When she told us about her love of riding, we got in touch with Riding
for the Disabled at Digswell Place, who have been absolutely amazing with their support. “We’ve been coming every week and it’s been so good for Jacqui’s health and wellbeing. “Riding at Digswell Place has given her a fantastic opportunity to be independent and enjoy her lifelong passion for horses.” Accompanied by volunteers, she has been riding a pony called Darraugh around the outdoor arena and getting used to being back in the saddle.

Once fully running, every member of staff will be trained to assist with a resident’s wellbeing and the in-house physiotherapy rooms will continue to provide vital physical exercise and mental stimulation for residents. Speaking in the podcast, Pauline added: “We’ve always been known for our person-centred care, we’ve always treated people as individuals, and that’s something that’s been important to how we provide care. “The wellbeing programme will very

Hospice praises residents’ ‘overwhelming generosity’ DORSET charity Lewis-Manning Hospice Care has praised the ‘overwhelming generosity’ of residents and staff at a Poole care home for raising nearly £2,500 to help its work. Colten Care’s Bourne View chose it as its main charity to support two years ago and has since held a series of fundraising initiatives in spite of the pandemic. They included a virtual bike ride by resident Molly Tarrant that raised more than £700 on its own plus raffles, cake and plant sales, quizzes and neighbourhood hamper deliveries. The home invited charity representatives in for a special presentation, featuring the handing over of a giant cheque for £2,364.47. Molly, fellow residents and members of staff, all of whom were involved in the fundraising, attended. Vicki Gray, area fundraiser for Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, said: “I am overwhelmed with the incredible amount raised by the staff and residents at Bourne View. “We are so very grateful for their generosity, especially during the past two years, when fundraising has proven to be very challenging. “Alone we can do so little, but together our community can do so much.
“The Bourne View team are great to work with, really friendly and supportive. “I would like to thank everyone at Bourne View for putting so much time and effort into these fundraising events. They really have helped more local lives than they’ll ever know.” Despite being unable to walk after a stroke, Molly rode 100 miles on a static physiotherapy bike, the equivalent distance from Bourne View to London, to support LewisManning. Describing it as a ‘brilliant charity’, she said: “I had heard about the brilliant work they do for patients with life-limiting illnesses and I wanted to do something myself and give something back.” Brian Ramsey from the Bourne View companionship team added: “LewisManning Hospice Care provides extraordinary care to people across the community and we have been proud and privileged to do our bit to support them.” Lewis-Manning Hospice Care provides care to patients and their loved ones facing a life-limiting illness across Poole, Purbeck and East Dorset. The community has enabled the charity to support and care for more than 8,000 people during the past 30 years.

Range of new positions announced at provider’s homes across Scotland Group adds string to domiciliary bow with launch of package A SURREY care provider has broadened its domiciliary offering with the introduction of a new wellbeing and reablement package’— designed to support those recovering from injury and illness, or transitioning back to their own homes following a hospital stay. CHD Care at Home, the domiciliary care branch of CHD Living, will ensure that hospital outpatients and those recovering from a life-changing injury or ill health have everything they need during the often daunting prospect of returning to normality. The wellbeing and reablement package has already helped to transition 50 people back into their own homes. Shaleeza Hasham, head of hospitality, communications and commissioning at CHD Living, said: “We can’t believe how popular the new package has been so far, the numbers are amazing and a testament to the quality and convenience of our service. “It’s extremely rewarding to see an individual regain the confidence to be independent again and being part of that journey comes with an immense sense of pride. “The personal touches we provide is what really makes us stand out — with every member of staff spending the time to get to know each individual person under our care. Creating meaningful connections is the backbone of what we do — and those under our shortterm reablement package are no Residents and staff at Magnolia Court care home in Golders Green experienced an afternoon of joy when The London Children’s Ballet came to visit. They were blown away by the performance of The Little Princess as they were danced through the emotive story of Sara and clapped at her good fortune at the end of the story. General manager Octavian Stanciu said: “Our residents had a wonderful day and they were mesmerised by the wonderful performers. We do our best to provide a wide range of activities and entertainment at Magnolia Court as part of the life enrichment programme for residents, and are always keen to bring live performances to our lovely home.”
exception.” For hospital outpatients, the process begins well before they are discharged — with carers sent in to prepare the home beforehand and complete simple tasks such as putting the heating on, re-stocking the fridge and changing the bedding. The occupational therapy department will also be on hand prior to discharge to ensure the home has been adapted to optimise safety and functionality. During the reablement period, carers will assist with all manner of domestic activities including meal preparation, personal care and even providing transport to any follow-up hospital appointments. CHD’s domiciliary staff have also received specialist training to support those individuals who may require more complex ongoing rehabilitation or maintenance. The overarching aim of the package is to help support the rehabilitation and transition of a return to independent living. The package typically runs for a period of four to six weeks, however, this can be limited to as little as a few days depending on the needs of the individual. Those enrolled in the programme receive regular visits from carers throughout the day, the number of which is based on the severity of the case. After the six-week period, a structure is then put in place to extend to full-time domiciliary care if necessary.

Flexible, family-run company can meet your business and legal expectations WE ARE often contacted by clients who have had the standard Fire Risk Assessment completed and found it contained brief references to riser/ service cupboards, fire doors and compartmentation. UK Passive Fire Solutions will always review the assessment for you and assist where we can, but in a lot of cases we find the assessment will also have comments that mitigates the assessor’s responsibility such as “recommend further investigation” and “report based on items found at the time of the assessment/survey.” This would suggest there are more areas to investigate which are beyond the scope of the FRA. In these instances, we must recommend a Passive Fire Protection/ Compartmentation Survey be completed. It is a common mistake to believe that, by having an annual Fire Risk Assessment completed, all fire safety obligations have been fulfilled. Unfortunately, this is not correct. Whilst an FRA will cover some aspects of fire compartmentation, it is intended to concentrate on fire safety signs and notices, identify the fire hazards, emergency lighting, testing and maintenance, training and drill procedures and suitable records, to
name a few. A PFP survey assesses the building in more detail. Poorly maintained fire doors, voids in ceilings and service shafts and penetrations made in walls, floors or ceilings can become paths through which fire and smoke can spread. By identifying these failures within the fabric of the building, specialist
repairs can be made to reinstate the compartmentation of the building to maximise the time available to evacuate the property, and or prevent a fire from taking hold in the first place. We would always recommend you discuss your requirements fully before commissioning any survey/ assessment.
If you just ask for a FRA, the likelihood is that is all you will get but a competent, third-party accredited assessor will be able to discuss and offer a service that will suit your needs. Once you have detailed information on what is needed, do not sit on it. The problems are not going to go away by themselves. If you have not already spoken to us at UK Passive Fire Solutions, now would be a good time. As a family-run business, we believe in building relationships. Our flexible approach allows us to work with you before and throughout the project to ensure you can meet your business and legal expectations with the minimum of disruption. UK Passive Fire Solutions hold third party accreditation with International Fire Consultants and Association for Specialist Fire Protection. We work closely with certified fire risk assessors and door inspectors. With regular site visits from our senior management throughout the project, we aim to provide the best service available. We can also arrange credit terms to spread the cost of the project over an agreed time period to ease the pressure on your budget.

Full steam ahead at Country Court ROSE Lodge Care Home in Market Deeping epitomises the Country Court philosophy of ‘Our family, caring for yours’. The recently refurbished home offers luxury facilities in a calming, homely environment which coupled with a compassionate care team means that residents enjoy a safe and comfortable life with a varied programme of events and activities to ensure that everyone gets the most out of every day at Rose Lodge. With maintaining high standards of cleaning and hygiene in mind the group has already installed Duplex Steam floor cleaning machines into a number of their homes as part of a planned rollout to the remaining sites in the coming months. The Duplex Steam floor cleaning machine washes, mops, scrubs, dries, polishes and sanitises all floor surfaces from slip-resistant safety floors and tiles, to rubber, wood, vinyl, carpet and many more. It is available in both steam and standard models and with its contra-rotating cylindrical brushes, it produces an exceptionally thorough clean on all floor types. The steam models are unique in their class being the only steam-injected cylindrical brush floor cleaning machine available on the market. On carpets steam is excellent for refreshing and revitalising fibres and removing stains. On hard floors, particularly profiled and safety flooring, which can be amongst the most challenging types of flooring to maintain, the Duplex delivers a thorough clean and leaves surfaces dry in seconds and is approved by Altro to clean their slip-
resistant safety flooring. Benefits of steam n Chemical free floor cleaning. n Stain removal and grout cleaning. n Reduces slips and trips hazards. n Because no harsh chemicals are used in the cleaning process, no chemical effluent enters the waste water system. n The high temperature of steam kills 99.98 per cent of bacteria. n Low water usage so good for the planet. From bedrooms, bathrooms and dining rooms to kitchens, lounges and corridors, Duplex can supply a solution to most cleaning needs with a range of models to suit different sized areas. To demonstrate the efficacy of its products, Duplex has commissioned independent tests by the Hospital Infection Research Laboratory in Birmingham and have certified data that proves their machines kill the bacterium most common in the environment including Clostridium Difficile. The Duplex Steam floor cleaning machine is surprisingly light and easy to use and highly manoeuvrable around furniture and fixtures. A well received training and installation session was carried out at Rose Lodge recently where the Duplex 340 Steam made light work of the laminate flooring – reducing the need for chemicals which is not only great for the environment but also helped make the hard working housekeepers job easier to maintain a cleaner safer living space for clients and support staff alike.

Consider weather system changes when designing a new care home By Simon Bentley I THINK one thing we can all agree on is that in some form or another global warming is having an impact on us, from the amazing spring and summer of 2020 through to the worst storm in record just last month. Flooding is something which seems to happen more and more often with some insurers stating that events which have been classed as 1:100 (one year in 100 year events) occurring twice within a five-year
Simon Bentley
period. Rising sea levels mean many of our coastlines are now at an even higher risk of flooding, and its not just the tidal rivers which are causing flooding across the country. Water runoff from higher grounds is adding to rural flooding. As we continue to grow as a population we are taking more and more chances on where houses are built, some even have significant flood defences to protect them, inadvertently placing properties in once safe areas into areas where the waters are being diverted. This might seem like a strange place to start when talking about insurance, but the UK has seen a big increase in commercial insurance costs, with care seeing some much higher increases, along with all the other challenges you face from regulatory issues, staffing, in terms of recruitment and retention, and added costs such as pension contributions insurance could become a significant cost also. When you are looking at the design of your new building do you take into account the changes to the weather system? Do you have high enough walls to stop water entering the
building, if you are building in a high flood risk area do you have tanks and pumps to stop the water entering and to pump it out and where are you pumping too? Do you have non return valves on plumbing to stop waste water coming back in? What does your disaster recovery plan look like and have you tested it? Could you install a grey water system? Can you help the community in the vent of flooding? Insurance should be in place to cover you for the damage but you
need to be aware of what you have cover for and what the limitations on the cover are. Don’t get caught out after the event so make sure you have read the policy terms and conditions, and have made best preparations, test your DRP. Insurance can be a difficult topic and if you need any help we would be happy to try and assist you. We can help with most insurance types so please get in touch. n Simon Bentley is director of Phoenix Specialist Risk Solutions.
Medical classification for home mobility solution
Five things to consider when choosing a carpet CARPETS bring many therapeutic benefits to a care home environment. However, not all care home carpets are the same and yes there are some on the market which may not perform well in such demanding environments so here are Danfloor UK’s top five things to consider when selecting and specifying a carpet for a non-clinical healthcare environment. n Ensure the carpet contains an antimicrobial coating like danfloor’s BI-OME treatment to help with infection control. n Ensure carpets have an effective impervious layer to stop liquid spills contaminating the
subfloor. n Ensure flooring creates an acoustically sound environment for residents and staff. n Ensure the carpet pile works with walking aids and wheelchairs for those who require assistance with mobility. n Ensure carpets are solution dyed so they don’t lose their colour and can withstand the demands of harsh cleaning agents. Enquiries: Visit Danfloor.co.uk for more information about its range of healthcare carpets or call 0333 0143132.
HEALTHCARE professionals have a certified solution to assist people with their home mobility limitations and problems. AAT GB has attained Class 1 Medical Device classification for its range of S-Max stairclimbers. The certification means the equipment is validated as contributing towards “treatment or alleviation of disease or treatment, alleviation or compensation for an injury or handicap”. To AAT’s knowledge, the stairclimber is the only inter-floor transfer and access equipment that carries such accreditation. The AAT S-Max, with its “impeccable” safety record, eliminates any “significant risk” in the patient/client being able to go up and down stairs. Controlled by the client’s carer, the batterypowered unit smoothly kinetically moves up and down stairs, safely transferring the person with reduced mobility from one level to another- and onward, executing 300 steps from one battery charge. The rate of movement is completely controlled by the care giver, who receives full training from AAT as part of the assessment and provision process. When not in use, the S-Max can be folded away optimising living space for all members of the household. When the original recipient no longer needs the stairclimber, it can be returned to equipment stores, and re-issued to another person, thereby offering best value for the Better Care Fund. “When access in, out and around the home because of steps or stairs is a limiting factor in a person’s ability to be discharged, our stairclimber could be a key element in the care and support plan,” said AAT director Peter Wingrave. “It enables people to be discharged, safely and quickly, without any re-arrangement of the home environment. “But it does so much more. It can empower anyone with reduced mobility, with care
support at home, to gain greater freedom around their home without any furniture or structural alterations. Thus, a solution is achieved within days instead of months. “The one piece of equipment can serve multiple layers of the Better Care structure – from accelerating hospital discharge, providing a temporary solution to safeguard against risk whilst a more substantial adaptation is undertaken, empowering someone to remain at home if they live in a flat, or being a longterm solution when alternative inter-floor access measures are not appropriate/practical.” AAT offers the healthcare sector a range of support, including practical and technical demonstrations, client assessments, and servicing and maintenance packages for the kit. Helpful lending advice from a bank By Craig Ambler RISK parameters and the levels banks are comfortable lending at have changed over the last few years. Whilst most lenders prefer to provide development funding only if there is significant security, normally in the form of a wider group of care homes, single asset development funding is now readily available from a small number of funders, including Virgin Money. I manage a portfolio of more than 30 elderly care homes which includes eight currently in construction. Whilst with any development there are the usual risks to consider, my view is additional focus should be currently placed upon the below: Contractor risk – Banks prefer funding on a JCT Design and Build fixed priced contract. This theoretically protects the Bank and customer from rises in material costs and time delays, with these risks passing to the construction firm. Craig Ambler

Caretech chooses Gainsborough G360 services to provide total specialist bathroom solution GAINSBOROUGH Specialist Bathrooms has successfully delivered a G360 wet room to support disabled residents living at the Yorkminster Drive Care Bungalows, operated by Caretech Community Services on behalf of Solihull Council. The total bathroom refit project was instigated by manager Sharon Challoner. She identified that one of the communal bathrooms required modernisation and requested investment from the landlord. A tender opportunity was given to several suppliers and Gainsborough was successful in winning the contract.
It was chosen on the basis of its diverse G360 capabilities which would be able to provide every aspect of the project – from pre-enablement works, equipment and installation to servicing and after-care. This ensured Caretech only required one point of contact for all the works which significantly maximised convenience for the Solihull team. Sharon said: “Our previous assisted bath was breaking down regularly which was compromising the care we could provide. This coupled with tired bathroom facilities compelled me to request funds for a complete new wet room so we had greater flexibility for resident needs. “Gainsborough’s ability to deliver it all impressed us and right from the first site survey, we felt confident that the end result would be a success. “Gainsborough visited us many times during the project and we were able to be involved with the design process to ensure the room gave us the access we needed.” Now complete, the redeveloped Caretech wet room includes a range of quality, specialist fixtures and fittings alongside a reclining Sentes bath manufactured by Gainsborough. Sharon added: “Gainsborough were not the cheapest, but I believe you get what you pay for. You can see the quality of the bath and the
sanitary ware; the toilet arm rests are considerately designed and well finished. “When we were investing in this new bathroom, we needed to make sure it would be right and we didn’t choose the wrong contractor. “Their after-sales service package and warranty were also reassuring which has meant any issues have been dealt with quickly. We got it right with Gainsborough.” When it comes to safe, antimicrobial and durable bathing systems, Gainsborough understands
healthcare providers need solutions fast. Hence it delivers accessible baths efficiently, within budget and always on time. This trustworthy approach is also reflected in its G360 services which offer complete bathroom and wet room installations. By choosing Gainsborough all clients can access the established expertise of this proven specialist so final bathroom designs provide the very best in terms of both practicality and aesthetics.

Does your resilient flooring have a hygiene problem? AT BONA we are passionate about finding new innovative solutions in all areas we are involved in and are now able to offer a comprehensive range of sustainable, highperformance products and systems for resilient flooring. We have applied our expertise with coatings and maintenance products to create a totally unique program for caring for and maintaining resilient flooring effectively and with minimum disruption. Our high-quality care programme allows the ongoing maintenance of resilient vinyl, PVC, linoleum, and rubber floors to ensure continual performance, but also allows floors to be transformed when worn or degraded, rather than replaced. In heavy traffic scenarios surfaces can be sealed for additional durability and long-term protection. Floors face a range of challenges; from busy airports to hotel lobbies, which require a pristine appearance, to hospitals and kitchens that demand the highest levels of hygiene. Our simple system allows the professional to tailor a maintenance regime to the specific requirements of each floor. In terms of preserving the life of a floor’s surface, regular cleaning is the key. Bona’s cleaning treatment works effectively without harming the surfaces or the environment.

However, over time and with heavy wear and stubborn stains, an occasional deep clean may be necessary. Using the Bona PowerRemove R with the Bona PowerScrubber solves this issue, reviving resilient floors without the inconvenience of disruption due to renovation. Over time, repeated deep cleaning and the heavy trafficking regime may diminish the appearance and quality of the surface. The application of a new protective layer restores the original lustre and prolongs the life of the floor. Safe, quick and easy, Bona’s protective treatment restores floors bringing them back to life rapidly. Prior to the introduction of the protective layer the floor would be subjected to deep cleaning. Some resilient floors become damaged and heavily worn, often patchy in appearance. Traditionally this would be the point where the floor is replaced. However, with the unique Bona Recoating treatment, vinyl, PVC, linoleum, and rubber floors can be resurfaced quickly. This process can involve a complete transformation of the floor as it can be recoloured, using Bona Pure Colour, before protective layers of a transparent coating, Bona Pure or Pure HD are introduced. By renovating the existing surface
rather than replacing it, a lengthy installation period is avoided along with the inconvenience of disposing of the old floor. The Bona Resilient System can also be used for coating new resilient flooring, such as LVT, following installation. The primary difference with LVT compared to other types of resilient flooring, is the fine cracks between adjacent LVT elements. Resilient flooring such as rubber have welds where the sections meet, providing a continuous, sealed surface. This prevents moisture ingress but also renders the surface easier to clean and specifically, prevents microorganisms from occupying these areas of the floor. A renovated floor also means a healthier floor. Renovating ensures that bacteria and microorganisms are eliminated – even those hiding in joints, scratches, and other hard-toreach areas. Independent testing verified that a smooth, joint-free LVT surface can be created using Bona Deep Clean and Bona Pure, securing a hygienic floor according to the regulations of Technical Rules for Biological Agents (TRBA). We commissioned a study on the use of the Bona Commercial System on LVT flooring – typically used in hospitals and other hygiene sensitive areas. The test was carried out in
conjunction with the IFR Institute in Germany. The purpose of the test was to prove that a smooth, jointfree surface, as set out in the rules of the German TRBA standard, can be created by over-coating with Bona Pure. The first step of the test was to install a range of new LVT wood effect flooring. The next step involved dividing the test area into two sections and coating one with Bona Pure, while the other was left untreated. A solution containing fluorescent pigments was then applied daily across the whole floor and cleaned using the Bona PowerScrubber and Bona Deep Clean Solution. Daily contamination with the pigments followed by cleaning was carried out over a period of 8 weeks. At the end of the test period, UV lights were used to expose the levels of contamination on each part of the floor. The part of the floor not treated with Bona Pure showed high levels of contamination. The part treated with Bona Pure showed hardly any. To prove the test results further, the LVT planks were removed to examine for signs of contamination below the surface. On the untreated area, a high level of contamination was found below the planks due to penetration through the joints. However, the area treated with Bona Pure showed almost no signs of contamination thanks to its protective layer which seals each joint. With increasing amounts of LVT being installed it is likely that customers are going to be keen to ensure the surface is as clean and hygienic as possible. The Bona Resilient System offers a simple and effective solution, in addition to extending the life of the flooring itself. Bona Limited info.uk@bona.com bona.com Tel 01908 525 150

CARINGNEWS A resident at a Buxton nursing home celebrated an exciting milestone recently when she turned 100. Hazel Deaville, who has lived at Portland since 2012, shared her special day with residents and staff. She was over the moon to receive a congratulatory card from Her Majesty the Queen, which she enjoyed along with other birthday celebrations. Throughout her working life Hazel had many positions. She enjoyed several roles as a domestic aid and also worked at Mornington mushroom factory for a few years before qualifying in cookery and finally taking up the role as deputy cook at a local primary school, where she worked until her retirement in 1985. Hazel has four grandchildren and regularly enjoys spending time with them.
A Surrey care home resident was delighted to receive 100 personalised cards from local primary school pupils to mark her 100th birthday. Kings Lodge, a CHD Living Wellbeing Care Centre in West Byfleet, ensured birthday girl Violet Lee received many well-wishes from the local community by collaborating with Byfleet Primary school. Cheryl Meyrick, the headteacher of Byfleet Primary, initiated a scheme where her pupils wrote and sent in 100 handmade birthday cards to personally wish Violet a wonderful day. Kings Lodge’s wellbeing coordinator Michelle Woodyatt additionally established links with Mairi Mactaggart, a community champion at Morrisons Weybridge, who donated flowers, champagne, balloons, chocolates, cakes and cream scones to celebrate the special occasion. A former professional pianist celebrated her 95th birthday at a Dorset care home by performing live again more than 10 years after she last played a note. Myrtle Smith, a classically trained chamber musician, gave up the instrument in her early 80s saying she felt ‘too old’. Now living at Bourne View in Poole, she was invited to spend her birthday playing on the home’s grand piano with Colten Care’s music and arts partner Fiona Pritchard. The pair rehearsed and performed several pieces, with Fiona accompanying Myrtle on treble recorder and French horn. It surprised and delighted fellow residents and staff who gathered to listen.
A Thetford great-great-grandmother says keeping busy is the key to a long and happy life as she turns 102. Phyllis Manning was surrounded by some of her 28 descendants as they celebrated her extraordinary birthday at Larchwood Care’s Alexander Court care home. The second eldest of 11 children, Phyllis met her husband John William Manning during a bike ride aged 16. In 1942, not long after giving birth to their first son, John junior, her husband was dispatched to North Africa by the RAF. Their second son Lionel was born in 1948 following John senior’s return from his posting. In the little spare time she had before moving to Alexander Court, Phyllis enjoyed knitting, sewing and reading, but most of all enjoyed spending time with her ever growing family. An Oxfordshire care home resident has celebrated her 101st birthday with friends and family. Ruby Riches, who is a resident at Rosebank in Bampton, near Oxford, spent her day with fellow residents and the staff and enjoyed drinking prosecco and eating cake. Originally from Clanfield, Ruby enjoyed a long career as a headmistress there, and continued to volunteer supporting the children’s reading long into her retirement. She was supposed to go out for afternoon tea to celebrate but said: “I’d rather stay here and celebrate with the rest of the residents. Next year I plan to make it to 102 and throw a big party for all my dearest friends from Clanfield.” Ruby moved into Rosebank in 2017 and enjoys keeping up to date with the news, brass rubbing and spending time with her cat Sam.
Peebles Care Home resident Alfred Goddard has received a birthday message from a Queen who 78 years ago waved him off to war as a Princess. Alfred celebrated his 100th birthday at the Mansfield Care facility, and was delighted to receive the traditional congratulatory letter from Her Majesty The Queen marking his landmark occasion. Alfred’s son Mike said: “One hundred years after his birth, my dad enjoyed his second royal good wishes when he opened his personal message from that very same member of the Royal Family, not now a Princess but Queen Elizabeth II, congratulating him on his centenary. His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren have sent their love and messages from all over the UK and abroad and we are all very proud of him.”
Jean Jennings was thrilled to open a birthday card from the Queen as part of the celebrations for her 100th birthday at the specialist care home where she lives in Bridgwater. When Jean opened the card and read the Queen’s congratulatory message, she said she was shocked to find she had reached 100 and couldn’t quite believe that so many years had passed. Her special day was marked with an intimate gathering for close family members, arranged by the activities team at Avalon Nursing Home where Jean has lived for nearly three years. The stylish centenarian, who still regularly enjoys a pampering session and a manicure, had her outfit picked out and styled by the team. They also created an eye-catching balloon display for the party room, and head chef Robert Adams made her a special cake. Staff and residents at Ferrars Hall Care Home celebrated the 102nd birthday of Winifred Scott. Winifred, known as Win, has lived at the Huntington care home since September 2018. She says the secret to her long life is happiness, good genes, family and friends. Staff held an afternoon tea party for Win complete with a balloon arch and cake baked by chef manager Bill West. She was joined by her family and had a lovely time opening her cards and gifts. Win also enjoyed a game of birthday bingo with her friends at the party. Originally from Longford in Ireland, she trained as a nurse and started at Archway Hospital in London and went on to work at Hounslow Hospital.

Residential & Home Care Show – a lot to discuss and debate IN THE three years since the Residential & Home Care Show last took place, it would be an understatement to say a lot has changed. There is now more to discuss and debate than there’d ever be time for at several months’ worth of conferences. The general public’s understanding and appreciation of the work undertaken by those on the frontline in social care has grown tenfold during the pandemic, which is largely due to social care being at the forefront of the UK’s response to Covid-19. In addition, the political understanding has also grown and though promises of more funding for social care is welcome, they come with the fear that money will be swiftly consumed by the NHS. At the Residential & Home Care Show 2022 we’ll discuss social care funding and cover the issues that aren’t going to be resolved easily, namely around recruitment and workforce retention. There are no magic solutions, but we’ll cover the practical advice and strategies you can employ to reinvigorate and protect your workforce as we emerge from this pandemic. In many areas, there is a growing confidence in social care, and
we’ll provide a platform to those with innovative and technological solutions which can improve standards of care and make your operations more efficient. We’re very proud to work with key organisations in social care such as Care England, the National Care Forum, and many others with luminaries such as Vic Rayner and Martin Green sharing their insights and wisdom for the sector.
Understanding the challenges for care providers LEECARE enables effective management of all care and business needs. Powerful, feature-rich and customisable, Leecare’s software is performance enhanced, secure and offers a range of tools created by our experienced, in-house team of developers. From individualised assessments and care plans to operational best practice, Leecare is congruent with CQC, HSE and other external and internal standards. Your data is easily available when and where
you need it and linked in real time easy to use apps. The system is flexible and can be tailored to each organisation’s individual needs. Enquiries: See us on stand F11 at the Residential and Home Care Show. Alternatively, call 07735 294745, email Annick.g@leecare.co.uk or visit www.leecare.co.uk
We’re also delighted that our speaker programme is truly diverse and ensures that the voices from the social care sector are heard, who previously may not have had the opportunity to speak. Equality, diversity, and inclusion are essential in the context of workforce development, and enacting cultural change in social care, which can lead to improved standards of excellence. Most of all, we’re very aware that
for a sector that has struggled in so many ways over the last two years and is now emerging and facing up to even greater challenges, a sense of hope and a sense of community can only truly be offered by attending in-person events. The opportunity to network with friends and colleagues, to learn and share best practice is incredibly valuable, so we hope you can all join us on May 18 and 19.

OVER 40 YEARS EXPERIENCE lamontjohnson SELLING CARE HOMES NATIONWIDE .com
42 Signature at Ascot Grange, a luxury care home in Sunningdale, has announced the appointment of Mark Deadman as general manager. With a broad career in care management, Mark is passionate about people and their needs, having spent the last 20 years working in leadership roles in the healthcare profession. His areas of specialism include domiciliary, residential, dementia and assisted living care. Prior to joining Signature Senior Lifestyle, he managed multiple sites at McCarthy Stone for the past eight-and-a-half years. Mark is committed to tackling some key priorities for improving the overall living experience at Ascot Grange. Most significantly, instilling a culture of care and compassion at the home, through understanding both the residents and team members. A Suffolk nursing home has announced a senior appointment from within its existing staff team. Annalee Bennington celebrated 10 years of service at Lound Hall in Lound during November 2021, and was recently promoted to deputy manager. During her 10 years at the home she has had several roles, beginning as a care assistant before quickly becoming a senior care assistant, and working her way up to become the home’s in-house trainer prior to taking on her new role. Annalee said: “I’m so excited to take up my new role. When I began working in care I could never have dreamed that it would become such a wonderful and rewarding career.” A family-run Northamptonshire care home has appointed a new service manager to boost resident wellbeing – introducing a range of innovative mental health projects. Gemma Hall, 42, has spent 22 years working in the care sector and hopes to bring this wealth of knowledge to her new managerial role at Wellbeing Care’s Meadow View care home in Irchester, near Wellingborough. In her new role, Gemma will be supporting staff at the home alongside implementing new initiatives to boost the mental and physical wellbeing of residents. She has previously undertaken activities such as recreating a couple’s wedding on their 60th anniversary and making a ‘wish tree’ to fulfil residents’ lifetime wishes – including a hot air balloon experience and a trip to a live rugby match. Dementia UK has teamed up with East Ham Care Centre in Newham to appoint the London borough’s first community-based dementia specialist Admiral Nurse. Clinician nurse manager Tracy Connellan takes on the new role. She qualified as a nurse in 2001 and since then has worked across Newham and Bedfordshire within acute psychiatry and rehabilitation for older adults. Tracy has been working at the East Ham Care Centre for the last five years, caring for older adults on the Sally Sherman ward there. As a dementia specialist Admiral Nurse her role expands to take in responsibilities across all of the Centre’s inpatient wards. Tracy will incorporate both her role as ward Matron and her responsibilities as an Admiral Nurse.
The new caretaker at Newfield Lodge care home in Castleford is encouraging other women to ‘go for it’, whatever their dream job may be. Stephanie O’Donnell has worked at the home for five years, initially as a care assistant and then as a domestic. But when the position of caretaker became available, Stephanie was excited to apply. As the care home’s first female caretaker, Stephanie hopes to inspire other women to do whatever job makes them happy. She said: “I have always been a very hands-on person and I love DIY and gardening. I enjoy fixing and building things, it gives me a real buzz, but I never thought I would ever do this for my job. I doubted myself at first, but I love a challenge and had to give it a go so I applied and was delighted when I was invited for interview.” National social care organisation The Outstanding Society has reappointed one of its founding members to the board of directors. James Rycroft, managing director at specialist dementia care provider Vida Healthcare, has been reappointed as a board member following his departure in 2020 to concentrate on the construction of Vida Healthcare’s newest care home, Vida Court. As a board member of The Outstanding Society, James has input into the overall strategy of the organisation, alongside leading on arranging conferences, speakers and writing articles to raise awareness of what The Society offers. The organisation was originally founded in 2015 by James alongside Camilla Trimble, Zoe Fry and Russell Leese who had all recently achieved ‘Outstanding’ ratings following the introduction of the CQC inspection standard ratings in 2014.
An Edinburgh care home has announced two significant appointments as it prepares to expand its residential capacity. Cramond Residence has promoted Ross Bijak to general manager, while Daniela Zampieri has made the move up from deputy clinical care manager to take over as deputy manager. The pair will play an integral role in the home’s expansion as it looks to increase staff numbers to more than 100 in preparation for opening accommodation on the home’s top floor for the first time since opening its doors in 2018, and to increase its specialist care offering for residents with dementia. Ross joined the home in 2018 as a registered nurse before being promoted to charge nurse in April 2019 and then clinical care manager in December 2021. With more than 24 years’ experience in the care sector, Daniela joined the home early this year to help support all aspects of clinical care. Lisa Astley has been appointed registered manager at Bridgewater Manor, New Care’s latest care facility in Worsley. The £15million, state-ofthe-art 71 bedroom care home opened late last year and with more than 17 years’ experience in care home management, She is perfectly placed to fully establish the facility. our community. Working with Andy and Michelle was both efficient and enjoyable and I would not hesitate in appointing them to undertake further work for BVT in the future, in fact I already have.” The sale of Selly Wood House was handled by DC Care’s southern region director Andy Sandel and senior sales negotiator Michelle Natkus. Andy added: “Selly Wood House was a well-presented home, however it was felt an established regional operator would be best-equipped to make the required medium to long term investment to ensure that the home remained competitive in the local marketplace.” A buyer was found in the form of Pritpal Bedi of Avatar Care Group, a long-established regional operator who also acquired Hafod House in Wrexham and Oaklands in Oswestry through DC Care in the late 2000s.
POPPY Meadows, a new extra care living scheme on Didcot’s Great Western Park Urban Extension development, moved a step closer to completion as the build reached its highest point. A topping out ceremony was held to mark the key milestone for Housing 21’s latest facility, which has been developed in partnership with Vale of White Horse District Council, Oxfordshire Housing and Growth Deal and Oxfordshire County Council. Debbie Hope, head of development at Housing 21 said: “We are delighted to reach this important milestone in the development of Poppy Meadows. “The scheme will provide much needed affordable homes for older people, with on-site, tailored care and support packages available to help residents live independently. “It will also provide space for residents to stay socially connected, safely.” The Housing 21 team was joined by representatives from Deeley Construction, Oxfordshire County Council and Vale of White Horse District Council, and Osbornes to celebrate the occasion. Poppy Meadows is Housing 21’s first extra care scheme in Didcot and will provide accommodation for people over the age of 55. The development will offer 60
apartments available for social rent and a further 20 available for shared ownership. Poppy Meadows has been designed to promote independent living in a community setting, with a care team on-site 24/7 to deliver planned care packages if needed. The new homes are being built in the Vale of White Horse district and are being supported with £2.4m funding from the Oxfordshire Housing and Growth Deal to help deliver affordable homes for the community. Residents will benefit from a range of on-site facilities including a café/ bistro and hair salon, which are also accessible to visitors and the local community. There is also a residents’ lounge, activity room and communal gardens for residents and their guests to enjoy. Eleanor Deeley, joint managing director of the Deeley Group, added: “It’s fantastic to see the development hit this major milestone and to celebrate the great strides our on-site team have made over recent months. “We have been working in partnership with Housing 21, Quattro and Osbornes on the Poppy Meadows development, and it is these strong partnerships that have enabled construction to progress on track despite current pressures and issues presented by the market and supply chain.”

PGIM acquires £70m care home portfolio GERALD Eve, acting jointly with JLL, has sold Project Sandpiper and Poole to PGIM Real Estate for £70.2m on behalf of property consultancy LGIM. The portfolio comprises six modern purpose-built care homes totalling 430 registered bedrooms, all with single ensuite wet rooms. It is single let to care home operator Care UK with a weighted average unexpired lease term of 23 years. The leases are subject to annual RPI rent reviews, subject to a collar and cap of nought to five per cent per annum. Richard Lines, partner at Gerald Eve, said: “Working alongside our operational real estate healthcare specialists, we are pleased to have advised LGIM on the disposal of these assets having played an instrumental part in their acquisition back in 2013/14. “The portfolio provides long-dated inflation-linked income to one of the UK’s leading care home operators.” Five of the care homes are in East Anglia, with 41 per cent of the beds subject to a block contract agreement with Suffolk County Council. LGIM forward funded the five homes in 2013; they were developed in conjunction with Suffolk County Council to replace the area’s
outdated homes and provide essential continuity of care for the region. The sixth home is located in Poole, which LGIM acquired in 2014 as a standalone investment. James Waldock, director at JLL, added: “The JLL team was delighted to achieve a fantastic result for LGIM on the sale of this portfolio, which received interest from both domestic and overseas core investors. “We expect to see continued demand from overseas capital in the UK care home market, attracted by the structural market dynamics of an ageing UK population and the increasing need for age-appropriate care accommodation.” Gerald Eve and JLL advised LGIM on the disposal, while CBRE acted on behalf of PGIM Real Estate.

Hygienic warewasher is central to efficiency
Group is a finalist in prestigious awards A FAMILY-owned Surrey care group is celebrating after being shortlisted for a prestigious national care award. CHD Living has been officially shortlisted as a finalist in the esteemed HealthInvestor Awards 2022, which recognises significant achievements in the healthcare sector across the UK. With nearly 40 years of experience providing the care to the communities it serves, CHD Living has been shortlisted in the ‘Residential Care Provider of the Year – (small group)’ category. Shaleeza Hasham, head of hospitality and communications at CHD Living, said: “We are delighted and humbled to receive a shortlisting in the prestigious HealthInvestor Awards 2022. CHD Living stands for ‘Creating Happiness Daily’, and this ethos extends to both the people we care for and our valued staff. To be nominated for the ‘Residential Care Provider of the Year’ award is just incredible. “We are lucky to have such a caring, hard-working and dedicated group of
individuals working for CHD Living. The team helps us achieve our longterm business goals and have been integral to the shortlisting received. We are excited to attend the awards ceremony and, irrespective of the outcome, are very proud of what our care home group has achieved over the past 18 months.” The operator was recognised for its achievements over the last 18 months, which included the implementation of multimillion-pound refurbishments and developments at its Brownscombe Care Residences in Haslemere. The project saw the opening of 25 large, private en-suite bedrooms alongside eight luxury, supported living apartments for those requiring residential, nursing and respite care. CHD Living will now come up against six other finalists, with the overall winners being revealed on June 8 at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London – where industry professionals will gather to pay homage to all that is great about the caring sector.
WHEN choosing a commercial dishwasher for a healthcare environment there are a number of factors to consider including the plumbing and electrical supply, the financial outlay and the physical space available. Most important however are the industry and individual care home’s specific hygiene requirements. Forbes Professional always conducts a comprehensive site survey to ensure that the right machines are specified for each site. They are proud partners with Miele, whose commercial dishwashers are fully WRAS compliant and comply with all the necessary industry regulations. For a care environment, Forbes’ latest range of tank dishwashers enable an impressively fast throughput, which is invaluable for a busy kitchen. However, for some care homes a specialist hygiene dishwasher is required in order to ensure that the highest levels of hygiene are maintained. Miele PG8059 HYGIENE freshwater dishwashers deliver a particularly high temperature final rinse that is maintained for five minutes to ensure the ultimate hygienic clean. With a default temperature of 85c they more than exceed the Department of Health’s recommendations of a two-minute cycle at 82c. During lockdown, Forbes continued to install and service these machines for a number of NHS hospitals as
they meet the most stringent hygiene standards. Forbes Professional’s experienced account managers provide all the necessary advice to ensure adherence to the relevant operating parameters. Under their complete care package, clients avoid capital outlay and the fixed monthly payments are entirely deductible pre-tax profits. Clients also have the peace of mind afforded by a first-class engineer response service, at no extra cost for the duration of the contract.
Signature at Pembroke House has announced the appointment of Cristy Jones as general manager. In Cristy the staff and residents are in the hands of a general manager with a wealth of experience and knowledge in the industry, spanning across different countries. Her first experience in the health and social care sector came as a trained nurse in the Philippines. When moving to the United Kingdom she successfully completed an overseas nurse programme to become registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. She balanced out those commitments whilst working as a care assistant in a dementia unit. It was there she made the decision that her future lay in caring for residents in a care home setting.
