£3m funding to motivate teenage girls By Louise Cordell THE largest-ever project to get disadvantaged young women involved in physical activity has been launched by StreetGames. Nearly £3m funding from Sport England will help provide opportunities for 30,000 women in 50 areas across the country. The Active Women scheme will also see over 200 events and festivals organised, 1,700 new coaches and volunteers recruited and over 1,200 qualifications gained by those taking part. Jane Ashworth, StreetGames chief executive, said: “This will be the largest-ever single project to engage with 16 to 19 year old women in disadvantaged areas. “All around the country there are groups of girls who would welcome the chance to play football or take part in dance exercise classes, but who don’t get that opportunity. “We will be coordinating this new offering in order to change this.” Examples of the opportunities on offer include sports taster sessions for women living on housing estates in Milton Keynes, where issues such as cost and transport prevent them from taking part in sport and 11 week boxfit
courses delivered at convenient times for women in Hammersmith and Fulham. Jane added: “The driver for choosing to target this group in these areas is that their engagement in physical activity is very low – around one in ten – so they need all the extra support they can get. We are focussing on all types of activity, not just sport, in order to keep our options open and attract as many young women as possible.” The two-year project will launch at the beginning of March with festivals in Manchester and Newham, providing women with the chance to try new things and to return to traditional sports. Jane added: “We hope that we will be able to share good practice and events throughout the country and that this will result in lots of learning and value for money. It is also important to remember that what this group really want from physical activity is very under researched – so we plan to ask them! This will help sports workers learn what to do to engage young women and we will also be working with universities to make sure the knowledge is passed onto the next generation of undergraduates.”

Sponsor pours more cash into rugby scheme By Louise Cordell THE largest school tag rugby programme is set to continue for a further two years thanks to a new sponsorship contract. Milk drink brand Yazoo has extended its RFU Primary School programme contract for a further two years, in order to continue supporting the grassroots sport in the UK until 2012. The scheme, which has been running since 2006, is the largest school tag rugby programme in Enland and aims to improve the health of more than 250,000 primary school children through more than 25,000 training sessions over the coming year. Marielle de Jong, MD at Yazoo’s parent company, said: “Tag rugby is our most important sponsorship and we are delighted to be continuing our successful partnership with the RFU for a further two years. “Since we got involved in the programme four years ago over 1,500,000 primary school children in the UK have been introduced to tag rugby through our regional festivals. “Taking part in sport is a key contributor to the health of children throughout the UK, both physically
and emotionally and our Primary School Programme sponsorship enables us to encourage children to learn how to make those decisions second nature.” As part of the RFU Primary School Programme, children compete in ‘Tag 2 Twickenham’, a set of regional festivals that sees tag rugby teams competing for their chance to play at the Twickenham grounds before an international game. The new contract will also see the introduction of a one-stop resource for rugby union in primary schools the Tag 4 Teachers training programme, and a continuation of the TAG Rugby coaching programme. These resources will help improve the health and fitness of thousands of children over the next two years, whilst gaining all the additional benefits from playing team sports. Paul Vaughan, RFU business operations director, said: “We are pleased to extend this successful partnership to support rugby union in primary schools. “The programme encourages children across the country to get involved with sport to enable a healthier lifestyle.”

Ripon pupils playing Rock-It-Ball
Ripon school celebrates a Rock-It-Ball first RIPON Grammar School has been appointed as the first National Centre of Excellence for Rock-It-Ball. The North Yorkshire school became involved thanks to the work of Director of Sport Helen Mackenzie, who showed off its facilities to the Rock-It-Ball Federation. She said: “I was introduced to RockIt-Ball about three years ago, a successful lottery bid enabled me to introduce it into the 21 Ripon schools and the impact it has had so far has been phenomenal. “I love how this sport caters for all abilities, including the children who don't normally get involved in competitive sport. It is just so inclusive and I want Ripon to lead the way. “We have lots of things planned
both for Ripon schools in general and for the National Centre of Excellence.” As the National Centre of Excellence, Ripon Grammar School will aim to assist the growth of the sport, will establish a local Rock-ItBall club, host coaching conventions, international training courses and workshops, and will be the home of the England and GB squads. Ian Crosby, England Rock-It-Ball Association CEO, said: “It is a wonderful venue, but most importantly we needed a champion who has the drive, vision and enthusiasm to make it succeed and Ripon certainly has that in Helen. “This is fantastic for both Ripon Grammar School and Rock-It-Ball.”

Coca-Cola adds fizz to doorstep sport campaign By Louise Cordell
Gold challenge launched A NEW charity challenge that gives young people the chance to be part of the 2012 legacy has been launched in the UK. Gold Challenge gives everyone the chance to challenge themselves in multiple Olympic and Paralympic sports, while raising money for their chosen charity. The programme aims to bring the fun of learning a new sport to life, and to give people the chance to improve their skills under expert tuition. Konnie Huq, pictured, and scheme founder Dan Thomson
were joined by a host of Team GB Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls and over 100 leading chairties at the launch. Dan said: “My vision for Gold Challenge is twofold – to inspire people of every age and physical ability to play sport and raise £20m for charity by the end of 2012. “By harnessing the growing excitement around the Olympics we are in a unique position to deliver this and I am confident that it will be a truly UK-wide project.”
COCA Cola has teamed up with StreetGames to help change young people’s lives through sport. The partnership, which will aim to deliver an improved sporting experience to over 110,000 children, has been launched by MP Hugh Robertson, Minister for Sport and Olympics. StreetGames promotes ‘doorstep sport’ to teens in disadvantaged communities who don’t have access to sport in their everyday lives. Coca-Cola Great Britain’s investment will help provide more opportunities for young people, allowing them to get active in ways that appeal to them and helping to make sport an enjoyable part of their day-to-day lives. Over the next three years, Coca-Cola Great Britain’s funding will allow StreetGames to deliver an improved sporting experience through: helping StreetGames to grow its network of projects and create more opportunities, setting up a new programme of 300 Neighbourhood Festivals and creating the first ever StreetGames Sport for Change Training Academy, equipping 100 tutors to deliver 11 specific new StreetGames
training courses to around 6,000 coaches. Jane Ashworth, StreetGames chief executive, said: “The 2012 Olympic Games presents one of the biggest opportunities this country has ever seen for boosting grassroots sports participation. “It is our ambition to make sport as accessible as possible to young people living in disadvantaged communities, ensuring that they have the same chances to enjoy and excel at sport that others have. Our new partnership with CocaCola Great Britain will aid that mission, enabling us to empower local sports deliverers through increased training opportunities and to increase the number of events available to young people.” Coca-Cola Great Britain has also announced that it will use its sponsorship of the Olympic Torch Relay to shine a light on the best of British youth, rewarding those who had made a positive contribution to their local communities. The company will be working with StreetGames over the next year to recognise some of the dedicated young people and coaches involved in the programme around the UK and give them the chance to carry the Olympic Flame.

Delight at GO Curves success TEENAGE girls are being given a fitness boost thanks to the success of the FIA Go Curves programme. Results have shown that over half of those who participated in the scheme were doing more than the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity five times a week on completion. The free, six-week programme, targeting 15 and 16 years olds from local schools was designed to increase physical activity within this hard to reach group. It consisted of an hour session each week made up of 30 minutes of strength and resistance training and 30 minutes of exercise and nutrition education. In addition to being offered tailored packages, certificates were awarded on completion and girls were encouraged to ‘buddy up’ with a friend or family member to support them to continue. Of the 200 students who took part, on entering the programme 60 per cent were unhappy with their bodies and wanted to become more active, almost two thirds did less than three hours of physical activity a week and only fifty percent did enough to raise their heart rate. Dave Stalker, FIA executive director, said: “Teenage girls are not an easy group to reach in terms of their health and fitness choices. “We developed the GO Programme to engage them in physical activity early on, with the view to it being part of their daily lives as they grow into women. “We are delighted with the results from GO Curves so far; students have seen changes in behaviour and attitudes towards exercise and their body.” Over 200 students took part in the pilot in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales and it is currently being rolled out throughout the UK.
Fun, fitness, facts ... all on one DVD By Louise Cordell A FORMER PE teacher has launched a range of classroom DVDs combining fitness and learning. Kevin Matthew created the In Class Fitness range to provide schools with a teaching tool that appealed to both active and inactive pupils. He said: “I was one of those hyperactive kids when I was at school, so I know how hard it can be for some to concentrate on traditional learning. “These DVDs address that, but they are also a great way to get more reserved children involved and exercising, almost without them knowing it.” The programme of workouts take the children through their two to their 12 times tables using movement, music and rhyme. Kevin appears on the DVDs, which can be shown to the class on a TV screen or overhead projector, alongside graphics and animations to help keep pupils engaged and following what is going on. He added: “The workouts are about combining fitness with different areas of the curriculum – I want to help get kids active and support their learning at the same time.
“They can be used as a brain break to improve concentration or as a motivating way to start the day. “Space is also often an issue in schools, especially those in cities, but these sessions take place in the classroom meaning the lack of a playing field or even wet weather aren’t a problem.” The DVDs have been distributed to eight schools as part of a pilot programme and have received a great response from pupils and teachers. Feedback so far has shown that it has improved learning speed in pupils as well as increasing enthusiasm for activity and every school is planning to continue using the programme in the future. Kevin added: “It is a fun activity, but also an effective learning tool. “It doesn’t feel like a lesson for the kids – just a fun game and a challenge and it is giving teachers an extra way of providing more focussed learning.” The eight pilot programmes are due to finish at the end of this year, and Kevin will then be collecting data and feedback from all the schools that have taken part. The products will then be promoted to more schools in the New Year, before research starts on the next range of products.
The aim is to produce at least two DVDs each year, incorporating a range of subjects to keep pupils coming back for more. For further details see: www.inclassfitness.com

Social media site kids ‘increase physical activity’ By Dominic Musgrave PLAYING on computers can help motivate kids to become healthier and fight obesity, a new study has shown. The research, supported by the Football Association and carried out by Loughborough University, looked at the effects of school children using social media site www.footee.com and how it can help combat pupil obesity. The study compared a test group of schools (who were exposed to the Footee site) to a control group of schools (who had no exposure to the site). The report shows that pupils from the test group schools exhibited increased physical activity, and also gained an improved attitude towards this type of activity – compared to the control groups. It then concluded that: “www.footee.com can be used as a successful tool to increase physical activity and increase motivation for sport participation in young children, leading a way to help prevent and reduce the current childhood obesity epidemic.”
Donna McIvor, FA national football development manager, said: “The results clearly show that the benefits of www.footee.com extend beyond the well established online educative experience to impact positively on children's day to day physical health, fitness and engagement with football. “The report details that there were 'drastic improvements in the number of pedometer steps taken by pupils exposed to the website and the associated reward scheme' and also that 'it can be hypothesised that if such a scheme was to be implemented in the long term, the physical activity levels of primary school children could be drastically improved.” Footee has been designed for seven to 13 year olds and contains over 200 National Curriculum-linked educational games across multiple subjects. The key feature that generated the study results is a system which allows teachers and parents to manually reward children with ‘virtual rewards’ for health-benefitting ‘real-world’ behaviours – via a control panel in the site.
Daniel Keatings demonstrating his skills at the adiZone
A taste of the Olympics YOUNG British gymnast Daniel Keatings attended the opening of a giant outdoor gym, created to offer St Albans residents a taste of the Olympics. The adiZone has been designed and developed by adidas and the Great Outdoor Gym Company in Verulamium Park and is inspired by sports which feature in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. It includes a basketball, football and tennis area, a climbing wall, an outdoor gym and a freestyle area to
encourage dance, aerobics, martial arts and gymnastics. Daniel, who will be representing Great Britain at the 2012 Games, said: “This is such a great facility. “I really think I would have benefited from one of these when I was younger.” The adiZone is free and open to the public all the year round – it is hoped it will be an easy to use facility for people of all ages and sporting abilities.

A fifth ‘finish primary school obese’ By Louise Cordell ONE in ten children start primary school obese – rising to nearly one in five by the time they leave. These are the findings from the school measuring programme, which has collected date from more than one million children. The figures show a slight increase from previous years, however the NHS Information Centre, which produces the report, claims this is not statistically significant. This is because parents can refuse to let their children take part in the programme – and one in ten take this option. Tim Straughan, NHS Information Centre chief executive, said: “This is the fifth year of the programme and participation in the study continues to increase with more than a million children taking part. “The study suggests that weight problems continue to be far worse for older children than for younger children, with one in three year six pupils being either overweight or obese and nearly one in five obese.
“These statistics suggest that more needs to be done at a younger age to combat obesity within primary education and positively encourage healthy eating and participation in physical activity, to reduce future health implications for these children.” The NCMP measures the height and weight of children in reception and year six in primary schools in England, establishing whether they are underweight, healthy weight, overweight or obese. Participation in the scheme has increased year on year since it was first introduced in 2005 and 91 per cent of eligible pupils now take part. The study showed that more boys than girls were obese in both age groups, by 1.3 per cent in reception and by 3.4 per cent in year six. It also revealed a higher prevalence of obesity in urban areas than in non urban areas for both age groups and that areas with the highest number of obese reception pupils tended also to have the highest number of obese year six pupils.
Ellesmere College has hosted a football tournament with a total of 14 teams participating. We were delighted that so many local schools were able to field teams to participate in this annual football tournament.”

The Amateur Boxing Association of England and England Colleges Amateur Boxing Association have teamed up to launch the centres, five of which have started since September, recruiting 67 boxers so far. The aim of the scheme is to give elite and aspiring boxers the chance to train full time, whilst gaining valuable educational qualifications and continue their personal development. The centres are part of the Advanced Apprenticeships in Sporting Excellence programme,
which is a combination of educational opportunities and high performance boxing training where both male and female students can earn qualifications through their education and boxing development. The Apprenticeships are delivered over a period of two years and is a government supported and funded initiative. Each high performance centre has a full time coach leading the programme who will work closely with local boxers and their club coaches to help each boxer to reach their full potential. The boxing and sports science training that is provided at the centre will be in addition to the training that goes on within the club. Paul King, ABAE chief executive, said: “The ABAE sees the implemen-
Specially-designed programme bids to round up teenage girls BIRCHWOOD School Sport Partnership is working to increase participation in PE, especially among disengaged teenage girls, through a specially designed boxing programme. Box2bfit is an aerobic work out set to music using boxing training techniques but without the contact. It has been launched by John McCormack, former professional boxer and creator of the popular Skip 2B Fit programme. Caroline Apps, assistant PDM at the Birchwood SSP Partnership organised a taster session in order to offer students in years seven to 13 the chance to take part in a non traditional sport. She said: “The students in all years enjoyed the programme and worked extremely hard during the circuit style sessions. They loved the activities and were energised through John’s enthusiasm – this helps especially with the disengaged girls as they forget that they are exercising as they are having fun.” Throughout the day a variety of year
groups took part in the sessions, which included lessons in healthy eating and living as well as boxing circuits. Once students completed the physical side of the sessions, they also took part in classroom based work which included discussing the benefits of cardiovascular exercise on the body and completing research into diet and nutrition. After the taster session the school also kept the Box 2B Fit bag, which includes all of the equipment for teachers to deliver the workouts again. Caroline added: “Since the Box 2B Fit team came to the school, PE staff have used the equipment and run sessions during lunchtimes, enabling normally introverted students to participate in something they can be good at and enjoy. Staff have commented on the impact it has had on key stage four and five disengaged girls, who have become more involved in sessions during curriculum time than ever before.”

‘What a way to get a workout’ CARL Smith, a Fitness First personal trainer, visited the Creepy Crawlies play centre in York. He said: “Interval training is, I believe, one of the most effective ways of increasing fitness, exercising the heart and it is believed to boost the metabolism for up to 18 hours post training. “Interval training is performed after a warm up by raising the heart rate to around 90 per cent of maximal then bringing it down to around 65 per cent then back up. “This is the type of cardio I recommend to my clients who want to either increase fitness, build stamina or simply desire a reduction of body fat. “After spending some time at Creepy Crawlies Children’s Activity Centre and monitoring the heart rates of children aged four to 13 years, it was noted that after running around the course then using the slide to get down then running back up, then sliding back down, the heart rates rose quite significantly, up to 95 per cent in one child, the slide being the rest period and the running to get up there being the high point. “The average heart rate rise was 84 beats per minute. “What a way to get a workout – and they don’t even know they are having one.”
Association celebrates success of play scheme THE Play Providers Association is celebrating the success of a scheme championing the benefits of indoor play for children. Over 25,000 school pupils have attended the Association’s indoor play centres as part of the Play4Life Schools Challenge. To support the Department of Health initiative, over 100 centres offered schools throughout the UK the chance to attend for free to show schools the benefits of active play. They took part in two separate elements of the Challenge – firstly an open play session where every pupil was fitted with a pedometer, allowing them to compete to find the most active child in the class. Each student received a certificate confirming their number of steps at the end of the session, and the results were added to leader boards in the centres charting the best class and individual scores. Then, for the second element of the visit, the children took part in fun and educational tasks to teach them about the importance of a healthy balanced diet and eating their five a day. The PPA encouraged its centres to get involved in the scheme in order
to illustrates the benefits of play to schools and pupils. Janice Dunphy, PPA chair, said: “Play has many benefits for children and young people. “It contributes to their physical and mental health and to social, physical, intellectual, cultural, emotional and psychological development. Play is also known to develop children’s confidence and self esteem and can go a long way to combating the threat of obesity in today’s society.” The PPA is also keen to let schools know that is facilities support four key elements of the Areas of Learning and Development within
the Early Years Foundation Stage. They do this by allowing children to interact with others in a safe yet stimulating environment to build their self confidence and to encourage behavioural development and self control. Janice added: “Play facilities also encourage exploration, investigation and develop a child’s understanding of the world around them. “Using the equipment and materials available creates a fun way for the children to develop their movement and space coordination and the different levels allow each child, whatever their ability, to develop at their own pace.”
Warriors opt for GForce FINLAND’S Helsinki Warriors Rugby Club are going from strength to strength and taking the GForce brand along with them, emblazoned on their new bespoke kit. GForce are delighted to have been selected by a team of the Warriors standing, particularly as they have just scooped their third consecutive Championship, breaking a national record in the process. Steve Thorne, the club’s general secretary, said: “The current team have a massive appetite for contact sport and have consequently worked hard on improving their game – with brilliant results. “The new kit has gone down very well with the club, particularly as the previous kit we had was ‘old style’, meaning it was heavy poly-cotton material and long-sleeved, so in our
summer season it wasn't very practical. “The new material, combined with the short sleeves makes them light, tight and breathable.” Developed as a part sponsorship deal the kit is printed with the GForce logo alongside the Warriors badge. Together with the new GForce kit, the team also ordered hoodies, replica kits and poloshirts, which have been very popular with supporters. The new rugby range from GForce has been well received by rugby teams and clubs within the UK. The flexibility inherent within the range means that teams can select the colours and fabrics that suit their style, and enhance this with the addition of embroidery or bespoke printing.

Rugby trio sign up as sports coaches COVENTRY Sports Foundation has signed up three new experts to make sure young people in the city receive the best coaching. The organisation has taken on three of Coventry Rugby Club’s top players – Sebastian Pearson, Elliott Read and Jamie Harrop – as sports coaches. The trio will now visit schools across the area to train the children as well as working with youngsters in local sports centres. Sebastian, who has represented Canada at under-20 level and has also played for Leicester Tigers and Stourbridge, said: “When I signed for Coventry in the summer I needed to find work and the director of Rugby at Coventry Rugby Club recommended Coventry Sports Foundation. “It has been great so far and we are all really enjoying working with the kids who have been very good. “The best thing is getting to know the kids, helping them have fun and hopefully we are benefitting them by passing on what we know through our coaching.” All three coaches work five days a week to take sessions in a wide range of sports including rugby, football and athletics.
Back, from left, Coventry Rugby Club’s Elliott Read, Sebastian Pearson and Jamie Harrop. Front, from left, children from Earlsdon Primary School: Eva Courtney, Elysia Picken, Cam Dale and James O’Leary Wendy Jackson, sports development manager at Coventry Sports Foundation, said: “We are delighted to have these three highly qualified people working with us. “The fact that they play their sports at such a high level seems to make the youngsters even more receptive to their sessions and the children will
benefit hugely from the experience of the three of them. “Sport in schools has a very important role to play and we think these appointments underline our commitment to continue to provide coaching of the highest level while other organisation are being forced to cut back.”
Hopes that new facility will motivate students STREETLY School in Sutton Coldfield has installed a new fitness facility to help motivate students and incorporate Olympic values. The school has brought in state of the art equipment and a range of bespoke branded images to represent ‘Inspiration, Determination and Courage, Respect and Friendship and Equality’. Adam Hughes, the school’s director of sport, wanted these images to display the school’s vision and to motivate and inspire the students. He said: “Creating this gym has been an integral part of developing our school values and bringing to life the Olympic and Paralympic association for all students to see.” The school teamed up with Life Fitness to install the 22 pieces of strength and cardiovascular equipment and the Youth Sports Trust to help them achieve community exellence. The resistance area has been designed in a circuit format to allow one teacher to oversee the whole workout session from anywhere in the gym facility, making it ideal for use in lessons and the school will also be opening the gym for use as a commercial facility in December.

Events lead to pupils doing a lot more sport College’s young leaders organise girls’ sports festival BEBINGTON High Sports College has hosted a girls’ sports festival to promote leadership skills at the school. The event was run by the college’s young sports leaders and 62 girls from local primary schools took part in a range of activities, ranging from dance and trampolining to dodgeball and netball. The leaders had prepared their sessions and practised their delivery during extra curricular clubs to make sure the sessions were of a
high standard. Throughout the day, all pupils were provided with warm-up activities, followed by skill drills and final competitions in order to show off the skills they had learned. Kevin Byrne, the Wirral’s Partnership Development Manager, said: “It was a fantastic achievement that the activities were run by the sports leaders and it shows the excellent training our leaders receive throughout the school, right from when they start in year seven.”
ANTICIPATION about the 2012 Olympics and the growth of National School Sport Week has encouraged school children to take part in a lot more sport. Research released by Lloyds TSB has revealed the positive impact that these events are having on young people across the country. Registration has now opened for this year’s National School Sport Week, which is set to take place from June 27 to July 1, and organisers are hoping to break last year’s record of over 14,000 schools and five million pupils involved. The study has revealed that of these five million, nearly three quarters of primary school and over a third of secondary school pupils have been inspired to take part in more sport. Teachers also reported the positive impact the week had on pupil’s behaviour, with three quarters stating that the week had a good or very good impact on behaviour. Jonathan Edwards, Olympic gold medallist, said: “It is great to see first-
hand the excitement that British schoolchildren have for trying new Olympic and Paralympic sports. “By giving more children the opportunity to try a wider variety of sports, we hope to increase participation levels and help young people be more active.” The report also showed that children are feeling increasingly proud and excited about the 2012 Games, and that interest is higher still among pupils who have participated in the Sports Weeks themselves. Sebastian Coe, chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) said: “The fact that nearly 14,000 schools took part in National School Sport Week in 2010 confirms what we witness every time we travel around the UK – that children are excited about trying new sports. “The enthusiasm up and down the country and overall support for the London 2012 Games is clear, and it is great to see the impact it is already having on school children.”

Sport Wales has announced its aim to double the number of coaches in the country by getting ten per cent of all adults involved in sports. Future Fitness talked to Professor Laura McAllister, chair of Sport Wales, about their ambitious plans.
‘We want every child hooked on sport for life’ SPORT Wales wants to get one in ten Welsh adults involved in sport coaching and volunteering by 2016 – doubling the current number of coaches and volunteers to an all time high of nearly 250,000. The organisation has made this pledge in order to make sure that soon every person who participates
in sport in the country will have access to an appropriately skilled coach. The scheme is part of ongoing efforts to get children involved in sport for life and create a nation of champions – just some of the aspirations outlined in a new six-year coaching strategy.

Professor Laura McAllister said: “This strategy is taking us forward from our 2005 coaching plan. “We felt that it was the right time to revisit the strategy and look at what we were doing right and what we could do better. “We want to get every child hooked on sport for life and to do this we need to get kids involved in sport, enjoying sport and staying in sport.” The strategy has been endorsed by the Welsh Assembly Government and has received an additional £1m funding - taking Sport Wales’ annual coaching investment to over £5m. This money will go towards making sure that every coach recruited is appropriately qualified, that 100 per cent of coaches trained become active and that all coaches are given the opportunity to develop in their career. Laura added: “It is really important that we provide kids with a quality experience. “But at the same time I don’t think that coaching is a specialist thing the best coaches should be working with all levels and standards, providing enjoyable activity that is available to all. “It should not be something that is only for the elite, it should be very much for the whole spectrum of participants. “To make sure this is the case we will be measuring progress carefully and talking to the kids involved to find out what they think and to see if their experiences are improving.
“I have every confidence that it will make all the difference and I am very keen to see the scheme move forward.” In order to achieve these targets, Sport Wales has launched a number of new initiatives. These include a TV recruitment campaign for coaches and volunteers and a photographic exhibition showing the coaches behind famous athletes in order to help celebrate the profession. The organisation will also be working to support all the new coaches trained to make sure they all get the opportunity to put their skills into practice, and also to retain them, by making sure that the experience is pleasurable and rewarding. Finally they aim to make sure that the sign up and training process is not overly bureaucratic to ensure that people like parents and grandparents are not put off by technical jargon. Laura added: “We are very optimistic about the whole scheme and in particular we have had a very positive response from schools. “We know that this is an important area where there is more work to do, because currently there is little opportunity to PE coaching training for teachers. “However, lots of teachers are passionate about getting more involved in sport and we hope that this will give them the opportunity to do more.”

Coaches are recognised with awards By Louise Cordell A DISABILITY coach has taken the top prize at this year’s Sport Wales Coach of the Year Awards. Peter Pearse, Boccia Wales head coach and former Paralympian, was named Coach of the Year for his work heading up the Welsh academy since 2007. This year his squad has won titles across the UK and Europe and his players are on the GB fast track programme for a place at the 2012 Olympics. He said: “It is a reflection of the hard work and success of the athletes I coach that is most pleasing. “There are so many positive aspects to being a coach, particularly empowering individuals through boccia. “In the future I’d like to see one or more of the Welsh athletes I first came into conact with a couple of years ago reach the podium for GB.” Other winners at the ceremony included elite coach Bud McAllister of the British Swimming Intensive Training Centre and Glyndwr Evans, who picked up the volunteer award, while GB basketball coach Damien Jennings was recognised for excelling in his sport. Professor Laura McAllister, chair of Sport Wales, said: “The winners are the perfect role models for what we want to achieve in Wales - every one of them should be rightly proud of their achievements. "More than ever, there is agreement and appreciation that coaches and volunteers are the lifeblood of sport. “Without the fantastic work of the thousands already making a difference in communities, from grassroots to elite level, we wouldn't have opportunities to take part in sport in Wales, and to excel.”
Other winners included: Anthony Palmer, who was named Community Coach of the Year for his ten years working in various sports. Anthony leads on all festivals and competitions in the Upper Rhymney Valley, as well as delivering a Dragon Rugby community programme five days a week in the local primary schools. He leads three breakfast clubs a week in a secondary school and also works a Friday evening at a leisure centre delivering racquet sports. Rebecca Daniels, who won the Young Coach/Leader of the Year Award, for her work coaching hockey. She is credited with helping to establish the renowned hockey fun centres in Llanelli and helped to pioneer primary school work in Carmarthenshire. Head coach of UWIC's 2nd team and assistant coach at Whitchurch Saints, she is also assistant coach at the Welsh Hockey Union Regional Academy and assistant coach at Cardiff Performance Development Centre. Betty Gray was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her 50 years as a ‘living legend’ in Welsh table tennis. The 90 year old from Swansea has taken honours all over the world – raising the profile of the game and acting as official ambassador for the sport and Wales. She was Welsh champion for more than 10 years, winning gold in the European and world singles championships for her age group and bronze in the doubles. Betty is still an active coach and oversees weekly sessions and competitions at leisure centres across the city.

Association disappointed by lack of provision for colleges THE Association of Colleges has announced its disappointment at the lack of provision for higher education in the government’s new plans for school sport. The revised funding arrangement, providing every secondary school with the money to pay for one day a week of a PE teacher’s time, does not include a reprieve for the same posts in further education and sixth form colleges. Martin Doel, AoC chief executive, said: “Encouraging students to increase their involvement in sport was a key role in the work of Further Education Sports Co-ordinators, so it is surprising and discouraging that colleges have not also been provided with the one day per week role in the revised settlement. “Colleges provide a setting for more than 800,000 young people each year and a continued role for the FESCo posts is essential in keeping these students involved in sport. “Young people in college deserve the same opportunities as those in schools; this announcement means that they will not receive those opportunities.”

Relief expressed as partnerships win reprieve By Louise Cordell SCHOOL Sport Partnerships have been expressing their relief after education secretary Michael Gove partially backed down over his decision to scrap the £162m scheme. He has promised to salvage over £47m from his department budget to ensure the partnerships survive until the summer. This has been seen as a positive move by the many campaigners who stepped up following the original announcement, including teachers and more than 70 top British athletes like Denise Lewis. They wrote to the Prime Minister saying that ending the partnerships was ‘ill-conceived’ and risked efforts to deliver a ‘genuine legacy’ from the 2012 London Olympics, in terms of encouraging sports participation. After the scheme goes in summer 2011, the government is promising that £65m will be available in 2011-12 and 2012-13 to ensure one PE teacher per school is released for a day a week to ensure efforts to boost competitive sports are ‘embedded’. In a statement, Mr Gove said: "I want competitive sport to be at the centre of a truly rounded education that all schools offer. But this must be led by schools and parents, not by top-down policies from Whitehall. "It's time to ensure what was best in school sport partnerships around the country is fully embedded and move forward to a system where schools and parents are delivering on sports with competition at the heart."

‘We are fully committed to support schools as they transition into this new phase of development’ The Youth Sport Trust welcomed the announcement with its chair, Baroness Sue Campbell, saying: “We are absolutely delighted that the coalition Government has taken the decision to build on the great work that is being delivered across the country in school sport and is providing a level of investment that will allow all young people to continue to have opportunities to take part, and compete, in sport. “We are fully committed to support schools as they transition into this new phase of development.” The Department of Education has also announced that it will fund the YST to expand its Young Ambassadors programme so that every secondary school and some primary schools can create more Young Ambassadors in the approach to London 2012.

‘Overruling by PM is a victory for thousands’ Andy Burnham, Labour’s shadow education secretary, said: “Gove's overruling by the Prime Minister is a victory for thousands of young people, teachers and athletes. “But this package from the Government, after weeks of scrabbling round for funding to save something it branded a ‘complete failure’, only raises one cheer at best. “Now, in conceding the success of
Delight at announcement AfPE’s response to the Government’s U-turn: “AfPE is delighted with the announcement that some funding will now be made available to support school sport partnerships. “We have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support colleagues in achieving some financial support to secure a sustainable future. “The Association always tried to take a pragmatic view with regard
to the way forward in the hope that the Secretary of State would at the very least make sure there would be additional funding in school budgets to go some way to ensuring that partnerships could continue. “We believe that local funding will prove to be very successful and by making additional money available Michael Gove has demonstrated that he is not ‘closing down’ school sport partnerships.”
our School Sports Partnerships, the Government has nevertheless failed to put in place a proper funding package that will allow us to capitalise on the excitement of the 2012 Games. “We are still looking at the prospect of fewer children playing sport in the run up to the Olympics, and no answer on what will happen to school sport following the Games."
Foundation chief’s huge relief at funding decision Russel Findlay, chief executive of the London Youth Games Foundation, said: “It is a huge relief to learn that funding will continue to the School Sports Partnerships, who help build the foundations of youth sport in England, allowing organisations like ourselves to flourish and deliver a real legacy from London 2012. “There is a growing consensus that a core legacy of London 2012 should
be more young people taking part in competitive sport and this year we had over 50,000 school children taking part in the London Youth Games – the most in our 34-year history. We are the perfect example of how a competitive inter-school and inter-borough environment can inspire participation and the removal of the SSPs would have threatened our continued endeavours to deliver a critical legacy in the London Olympic Games.”

Activity day proves a knock-out for pupils YEAR seven and eight gifted and talented pupils from Broxbourne secondary school took part in a day of activities organised by the A10 School Sport Partnership at the Grundy Leisure Centre. One activity was a boxing-related fitness circuit programme called Box2Bfit where the children competed to see how many repetitions
they could complete at each of the 12 stations. The programme was put together by John McCormack, a professional boxing trainer who said: “Box2Bfit gets you fighting fit without getting hit and is a perfect set up for schools to engage in the fitness only boxers do in gyms up and down the country. “Box2Bfit is all done to highly
motivating music throughout the session that the kids love, music really is a great way to motivate you to achieve your personal best in each exercise.” Partnership development managers Marcia Alcock and Jayne Jarvis said: “The kids had loved the day and it was rewarding, challenging and fun – just what the
students needed. We will certainly be having John back in soon so that many other children can enjoy the Box2bfit experience.” All the children and staff were treated to fresh blueberries following the circuit to encourage healthy eating from John’s sponsors Berryworld in Broxbourne and Winterwood Farms in Kent.
Funding allows Friday night Allowing users to target youth project to continue every part of the body A FRIDAY night youth project organised by Freedom Leisure is set to run for a second year after receiving funding from Crawley Borough Council and the Sussex Police Authority. Due to the success of the project – including a 15 per cent drop in youth related anti social behaviour – they will receive a total of £8,000 towards running the award-winning scheme. The project initially began in October 2009 and has attracted attendance of over 4,000 young people throughout the year. Sessions every Friday, offering young people between the ages of 11 and 19 the chance to participate in subsidised sports activities including basketball, football, climbing, trampolining and streetdance.
Dave Downey, Freedom Leisure’s community sport development officer who devised the project, said: “The Friday Night Project has been a great success – when I was planning the project, I anticipated attracting 50 young people a week, but attendances have averaged 100 in the first year, with some weeks reaching nearly 150. “It’s been particularly encouraging to see almost half of the participants attending from Crawley’s neighbourhood improvement areas, whilst over 400 young people from ethnic minority backgrounds have also taken part. “It’s been a great example of how community groups and agencies can work in partnership to have a positive impact on young people’s lives.”

Nutrition should be curriculum must
Ellesmere College has upgraded its fitness suite following a bequest from a former teacher. Frank Sutterby was Head of English at the college from 1953 to 1984 and left a legacy that allowed the school to invest further into its sports facilities, transformig the old gym into a modern fitness suite. Head teacher Brendan Wignall said: “Both pupils and staff can now enjoy and benefit from a state of the art gym. We are very grateful for the generosity of the Sutterby family and acknowledge their gift with thanks.”
INDUSTRY experts are calling for the study of nutrition to become a compulsory part of the education of every secondary school pupil. The British College of Osteopathic Medicine has made the comments after conducting a study that showed a direct and positive correlation in an increase in nutritional knowledge and healthier eating. The students who took part in the study showed a reduction in sodium and fat intake and an overall increase
in fruit and vegetables. Zoe Mundell, the report’s author, said: “It may seem obvious, that an increase in students’ nutritional knowledge directly affects what they eat, but often it is the most obvious and simplest that is overlooked. The results of this study imply only too clearly the benefits to students of directly studying nutrition as part of their studies, both at secondary school and progressing into higher education.”
