JOY LABINJO

Joy Labinjo, essay by Jareh Das

Joy Labinjo is a British-Nigerian artist who uses the human figure as a vehicle to explore topics such as storytelling, identity and race, and how they intersect with social, cultural and political contexts. Bringing together paintings from 2017 to 2024, this monograph coincides with her institutional solo exhibition We Are Briefly Gorgeous. Organised thematically, it explores the artist’s interests in ‘Family, Friends and Community’, ‘Social Criticism’, ‘Historical Animation’ and ‘Self-portraiture’. The paintings grouped together in the second section mark the beginning of the artist’s more satirical, politically engaged approach, instigated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the murder of George Floyd in 2020. ‘Historical Animation’ compiles Labinjo’s paintings of Black historical figures, such as Sarah Forbes Bonetta, Olaudah Equiano, Francis Barber and Charles Ignatius Sancho. In this series, the artist explores the histories of British portraiture, and the erasure of Black identities through the white gaze.

• Coincides with the artist's institutional solo exhibition, We Are Briefly Gorgeous, at Southwark Park Galleries, London.

• Brings together Labinjo’s large-scale figurative paintings made between 2017 and 2024, which capture scenes of joy, leisure and perseverance in everyday life.

• Features an introduction by Dr Christine Checinska, an essay by Dr Jareh Das and an in-conversation with Adelaide Bannerman.

DAVID GOMMON

Philip Vann

Born into a working-class family in London's Battersea, David Gommon was taken up by Lucy Carrington Wertheim, the adventerous Londonbased gallerist, at the age of nineteen. Aided by insights from the artist's own evocative writings, Philip Vann's text intricately examines the development of Gommon's predominantly landscape art – infused with mystical delicacy of colour and subtle audacity of surrealist composition – rooted latterly in the paradisical surroundings of the Northamptonshire village of Hardingstone where he and his wife Jean lived for decades.

This close examination of the Warhola family’s lifeworld allows a more acute perception of both Andy and Julia while also illuminating the broader social and cultural issues that confronted and conditioned them.

BERYL COOK / TOM OF FINLAND

Edited by Joe Scotland, Nicola Wright, Callum Whitley

Texts by Huw Lemmey, Joe Scotland, Nicola Wright

This bold catalogue brings together the work of two cultural icons for the very first time: Beryl Cook (1926–2008) and Tom of Finland (1920–1991). Beryl Cook was a painter renowned for her exuberant style and descriptions of everyday life. Her most enduring images are of larger-than-life women carousing in nightclubs, eating in cafés or enjoying ribald hen parties, rendered in graphic, colourful forms. Tom of Finland’s pioneering depictions of homosexual machismo broadly represent queer, leather and muscle communities. A master draughtsman, he used his works to give form to an imaginative universe that helped fuel real-world liberation movements.

• Spanning five decades of paintings, drawings and archival materials, Beryl Cook / Tom of Finland puts the work of these two cultural icons into conversation for the first time.

• Together, their works reveal interconnected ideas surrounding sexuality, gender, taste and class.

• Inspired by the 2024 exhibition Beryl Cook / Tom of Finland at Studio Voltaire in London.

MONET AND LONDON VIEWS OF THE THAMES

Frances Fowle, Jennifer A. Thompson, Edited by Karen Serres

Claude Monet (1840–1926) is world renowned as the leading figure of French Impressionism, the movement that changed the course of modern art. Less known is the fact that some of Monet’s most remarkable Impressionist paintings were made not in France but in London, of London. Monet and London: Views of the Thames will realise Monet’s unfulfilled ambition of showing this extraordinary group of paintings in London, brought together for the first time over a century after their inaugural exhibition on the banks of the Thames and a mere 300 metres from the Savoy Hotel where most were painted.

• Accompanies a major exhibition at The Courtauld Gallery that will reunite for the first time in 120 years an extraordinary group of Claude Monet’s Impressionist paintings of London.

• The exhibition will realise the artist’s unfulfilled ambition of showing the group on the banks of the Thames, just a stone’s throw away from where many of them were created.

• Richly illustrated and includes 21 entries and four original essays that shed new light on this famous series.

• American artist Glenn Ligon (b. 1960) is best known for his landmark textbased paintings.

• Accompanies a major exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, in which Ligon’s art will be displayed in dialogue with objects from the Fitzwilliam and Trinity College collections selected by the artist himself.

• Includes a series of essays and conversations between Ligon and a range of museum curators that further explores issues such as art making, aesthetics and the socio-political implications of race.

PHOTOGRAPHS BY WILLIAM

Many remain unmarked and largely overlooked in a society that has long ignored Black history. In this book, Williams creates photographs that bring visibility and pay tribute to the unrecognized people who contributed to Connecticut culture and its landscape.

Gary Freeburg has wandered and lived among Alaska’s volcanoes for regular periods during the last 20 years. The volcanoes he visits are alive and in some cases still steaming, and its lands are coarse and free of distraction. The essays, photographs and drawings in A Hard Walk through Solitude reflect how fortunate we are to have magical places and national parks like Alaska’s volcanoes – how fortunate we are to be alive on this magnificent Earth.

STORIES FROM EXILE AND DREAMS DEFERRED

This is the first book to present the stories and portraits of ordinary Tibetan people in exile, in their own words. It includes gorgeous photographs of the lands they embraced in Ladakh, where they fled after the Chinese annexed Tibet in 1959. It puts a human face on the increasingly complex problem of forced displacement. These remarkable individuals show us the meaning of never giving up, and that everyone deserves compassion, for without it, the future of humanity stands in peril.

NIGHT FIGHTER ACES OF THE LUFTWAFFE 1943–45

Neil Page, Jean-Louis Roba

From mid-1943, Allied bombing raids over Germany increased in number and severity. The Luftwaffe night fighter aces – using new technology and tactics – did manage to cut short the winter 1943/44 raids over Berlin by inflicting heavy losses, but at great cost to themselves. Despite the development of new aircraft, by March 1945 the Nachtjagd was in terminal decline. Illustrated with photographs and profiles, this account of the Nachtjagd, 1943–45, features the accounts of pilots.

THE CRIMEAN OFFENSIVE, 1944

THE RUSSIAN BATTLE FOR THE CRIMEA

Documenting the Spring 1944 battles to retake the Crimean Peninsula, this book includes many unpublished and rare photographs of Russian and German forces. The German 17th Army, facing massive losses, was evacuated by Romanian and German ships after being cut off in October 1943. Hitler's order against a sea evacuation exacerbated their plight. From mid-April, the evacuation operation transported 37,000 troops amidst constant Soviet attacks, resulting in around 57,000 men lost. This account features detailed maps, artwork, and photographs.

THE SOVIET BATTLE FOR BERLIN, 1945

Ian

This fully illustrated account analyzes the final Soviet offensives to capture Berlin in 1945, featuring rare images and detailed captions. In spring 1945, the Red Army launched three sub-offensives alongside the battle of the Seelow Heights to eliminate German resistance. From April 13-17, Soviet forces prepared for the Berlin operation amid fierce fighting. On April 20, as Soviet artillery shelled Berlin, over a million soldiers attacked the city against 45,000 German defenders, including Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS, and youth divisions.

THE WAFFEN-SS AT KHARKOV

FEBRUARY–MARCH 1943

Massimiliano Afiero

In early 1943, the German forces faced a crisis on the southern front in Russia as the Soviets pushed back significantly. Aiming to reconquer Kharkov, the Soviets attacked again, threatening remaining German troops. Despite orders, SS Panzer Corps commander Paul Hausser retreated, preserving two SS divisions needed for a counteroffensive. In subsequent battles, the Waffen-SS divisions—Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, Das Reich, and Totenkopf—unified to block Soviet advances and reclaimed Kharkov, securing Southern Ukraine for the Germans. This illustrated account details that pivotal victory.

DEATH BEFORE DISMOUNT

U.S. ARMY TANKS IN IRAQ

Andrew Eric Wright

This work provides an in-depth discussion of tanks' crucial role in five key Iraq War battles—Thunder Run (2003), the 2nd Battle of Fallujah (2004), Ramadi (2006), Baqubah (2007), and Sadr City (2008). Featuring first-hand accounts from tank crews of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Infantry Divisions and 1st Cavalry, it highlights how U.S. armor units were trained and strategically effective. The analysis emphasizes that the superiority of American tanks stems from their high-standard training and battlefield preparation, reshaping enemy tactics.

HARD BROKE

ASYMMETRIC WARFARE, GREAT POWER COMPETITION, AND INSTITUTIONAL PARALYSIS

Matthew D. Matter

This book draws on the author’s combat experience in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa, where he served as a counter-IED advisor to General Petraeus. It explores counterinsurgency (COIN), foreign internal defense (FID), and unconventional warfare (UW), addressing asymmetric warfare and peer competition. Providing a "counterIED playbook" from over 90 months of operations, it offers critical insights on adapting conventional forces to effectively counter IEDs and the emerging challenges of modern military affairs.

PILOTS AND PAINTED LADIES

493RD BOMB SQUADRON AND THE AIR WAR IN THE CBI

Lawrence V. Drake

US airmen flew dangerous missions over the Himalayas and into the jungles of Burma during WWII, threatened not just by the enemy but by the unforgiving terrain. A new perspective on their experience is given through the firsthand account of a young artist, Vernon Drake, who piloted bombers over Burma and tankers to China. Drake’s story contrasts the hours spent creating works of art with the moments of sheer terror in combat over enemy targets while carrying thousands of gallons of highly explosive fuel.

A TEMPEST OF IRON AND LEAD

SPOTSYLVANIA COURT HOUSE, MAY 8-21, 1864

Chris Mackowski

In May 1864, the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia clashed for three brutal days in the Wilderness. On May 7, instead of retreating, Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant led the Federal army south to Spotsylvania Court House, marking a pivotal shift in strategy. By dawn on May 8, the armies had advanced ten miles, igniting another fierce battle lasting until May 21. This campaign resulted in unprecedented casualties and named significant sites like Laurel Hill and the Bloody Angle, challenging both Union and Confederate forces to their limits.

Rosecrans and his Army of the Cumberland aimed for a decisive victory to support the Emancipation Proclamation set for January 1, 1863. Rosecrans advanced from Nashville to Murfreesboro, where on December 31, 1862, his 44,000 troops faced 37,000 under Bragg. The battle of Stones River highlighted the experiences of soldiers over high command.

THE VIKINGS IN THE HEBRIDES

Niall Sharples

This book places the Outer Hebrides at the centre of the Viking World and provides a unique contribution to our understanding of the islands’ importance at the critical period when Scotland was emerging as a major medieval kingdom. Our knowledge of this period in the Hebrides has until recently been minimal. However, two recent excavations at Bornais and Cille Pheadair have transformed our understanding of the period in the region. Summaries of these excavations are included alongside a comprehensive review of other important discoveries such as the Lewis Chessmen, the burial at Cnip, Lewis and the silver hoards from Stornoway Castle and Dibidale in Lewis.

The excavations at Bornais have transformed our understanding of the Norse settlement of the North Atlantic. It is possible to chart the evolution of domestic houses from the Viking longhouse to the post-medieval croft, to analyze the distribution of finds on the house floors and to critically assess gender relationships over this long period.

• Presents a popular, accessible summary of the excavations at Bornais and Cille Pheadair, previously published by Oxbow.

• Provides a general introduction to the Viking colonisation and Norse occupation of the Western Isles/Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

THE HIDDEN LIVES OF VIKING WOMEN

ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES

This edited volume brings together an international group of scholars to address the lives, roles, myths, mythology, and lived experiences of Viking women as well as the impacts of change on women during the turbulent period of the Viking Age. Through interdisciplinary perspectives, this is a book dedicated to the lesserknown aspects of women’s lives as active members of society. It provides an innovative way of bringing together work from archaeological, anthropological, historical, and literary perspectives to address questions about women in trade, in war, in magic, in the household and activities that provided women with power and respect in their communities.

• Investigates the concepts of gendered work and space of the Viking Age and Norse period.

• Reviews evidence for Viking women in Britain, demonstrating that women were present with the armies that won new lands for settlement and were thus part of the conquest and early acculturation processes.

A MEDIEVAL LIFE

WILLIAM DE FELTON AND EDLINGHAM CASTLE, 1260–1324

Graham Fairclough

The origin of this volume lies in an archaeological excavation between 1978 and 1982 at Edlingham Castle. It is a biographical fusion of history, geography and archaeology with a focus on landscape and castles studies, set in the reigns of Edward I and II in the context of early attempts to create by force a single nation on the British island. A central theme in the book is how medieval biography can be written about someone relatively ordinary and not famous without straying into generalisation. The existing general market readership for medieval history focuses on ‘kings, queens and battles’, and this book attempts a different perspective.

• Offers a biographical approach to history framed by archaeological and landscape perspectives.

• Covers regional as well as national history, deals with landscape and archaeology, and has a local history dimension.

COINS, RICHES, AND LANDS

PAYING FOR MILITARY MANPOWER IN ANTIQUITY AND EARLY MEDIEVAL TIMES

Land was the ideal store of wealth in the ancient Mediterranean world. It brought social respectability, and its possession allowed participation in the politics of the cities governed by landowning elites. This collection of papers sheds light on how coins, riches, and lands were gained and distributed among soldiers, warriors, and mercenaries. Contributions cover a wide chronological span from Late Pharaonic to early medieval times, linking a welldefined core area, the Mediterranean basin, with its peripheries: Central Europe and Scandinavia to the north and the margins of the Sahara Desert and the Fertile Crescent to the south and the east.

• Innovative approach to the relationship between political powers, hired military and their remuneration in terms of land distribution and/or monetary payment.

• Reflects on the respective powers and military organisation of different polities and the significance or otherwise of monetary payment in the recruitment, deployment, and discharge of hired warriors.

BRITISH POTTERY: THE FIRST 3000 YEARS

CERAMIC ART IN THE NEOLITHIC AND EARLY BRONZE AGE

Pottery was at the heart of the ‘Neolithic package’, appearing in Britain with the first farmers around 4000 BC. It arrived as a mature technology and was essential to the new, largely sedentary, lifestyle and economy. It transformed storage and cooking practices, and the earliest ceramics seem to have been essential equipment in the new practice of dairying. The pottery changed over time and, as a result, ceramics have been fundamental to the construction of relative chronologies since the early days of modern archaeology. This fully illustrated volume offers a comprehensive examination of the development, chronology, manufacture, context and use of British Neolithic and Bronze Age pottery.

• First comprehensive account of the sequence, development and use of early prehistoric pottery in over 20 years.

• Key text for anyone interested in or working with Neolithic and Bronze Age pottery by the country's leading expert.

PRESENTING COUNTERPOINTS TO THE DOMINANT TERRESTRIAL NARRATIVE OF EUROPEAN PREHISTORY

Barry Cunliffe, Johan Ling

This book is the first in the multi-author series Maritime Encounters, outputs of the major six-year (2022–2028) international research initiative, funded by Sweden’s central bank. Our programme is based on a maritime perspective, a counterpoint to prevailing land-based vantages on Europe’s prehistory. In the Maritime Encounters project a highly international cross-disciplinary team has embarked on a diverse range of research goals to provide a more detailed and nuanced story of how prehistoric societies realised major and minor sea crossings, organised long-distance exchange, and adapted to ways of life by the sea in prehistory.

• First in a major new series examining the contribution and significance of maritime transport, movement and trade in the shaping of Bronze Age and Iron Age communities and social complexity in north-west Europe.

• Considers the role of mining and source areas of metals and metal exchange networks in the Bronze Age along the seaboard between Iberia, Ireland, Britain and Scandinavia, and models a maritime mode of production.

Jane Downes, Colin Richards

This book provides the exciting results of a long-term project examining Bronze Age round barrow construction and burial practices in Orkney, Scotland. HIGH PASTURE CAVE

RITUAL, MEMORY AND IDENTITY IN THE IRON AGE OF SKYE

Stephen Birch, Jo Mackenzie

High Pasture Cave, located on the island of Skye, occupies a liminal location on the very edge of a settlement, and appears to have been a focus for specific and special activities. Its extended period of use is indicated by ephemeral signs of Neolithic Activity, limited Bronze Age usage, and vast artefactual and environmental assemblages recovered dating to the Early to Middle Scottish Iron Age, c. 800 BC to AD 150. This book details the research-led excavations at the cave and its context in the landscape.

This book presents a multi-disciplinary study of their dynamics. Focusing on the western Mediterranean, it draws on case studies of cultural landscapes shaped by two contrasting periods of conquest, regime change and state formation, providing a new framework for the study of the transformative spaces of medieval frontier societies.

The case studies deliberately highlight archaeological work across the entirety of the vast and varied geography of Iran, from the fertile plains of Fars in the southwest, to the rugged Zagros Mountains in the northwest, from the peaks of the Elburz Mountains south of the Caspian Sea, across the broad expanse of the Plateau, to the eastern regions bordering Afghanistan and Turkmenistan.

GREEK AND ROMAN POTTERY FROM SPHAKIA, SOUTH-WEST CRETE

FROM THE WHITE MOUNTAINS TO THE DEEP BLUE SEA

This volume presents the Greek and Roman pottery collected and analyzed by the Sphakia Survey project and provides a ceramic model for a large section of western Crete, where ceramic traditions, both domestic and imported, are as yet unexplored. This research integrates two approaches. First, a morphological and functional study of a body of pottery from a sizable part of Crete with little known archaeological evidence. Second, fabric analysis identifies and defines clays and clay mixtures, with macroscopic and petrographic analyses providing results from two perspectives.

THE ROTHER VALLEY

A SHORT HISTORY OF A LOWLAND ENGLISH RIVER CATCHMENT AND PROSPECTS FOR FUTURE MANAGEMENT

Edited by John Boardman, Ian Foster

The valley of the western Rother lies within the South Downs National Park but has a special character based on its Cretaceous geology of sandstones and clays. These give rise to soils that are ideal for agriculture but are extremely erodible. Over the centuries the area has been exploited by humans and partially cleared of forest. In this book, the archaeological history of the Rother Valley is summarised, with particular emphasis on the evidence for Mesolithic, Bronze Age and Roman occupation.

ENGLISH MEDIEVAL COIN HOARDS

AGE OF THE STERLING PENNY 1180−1351

The aim of this publication is to publish English coin hoards in the context of each of the successive currency periods between 1180 − around the time England arguably became a fully monetised land, with the silver penny under its recently emerged name of sterling − to 1351, when the pennydominated currency was replaced by a multi-denominational one in both gold and silver. The hoards discussed in this publication are seen in both their national and local contexts, identifying relevant local economic and social forces and activities, illuminating the place of money in the lives of the majority of England’s inhabitants.

• The first publication of a large body of material that constitutes a review of English coin hoarding and currency from 1180−1351.

• Provides a unique insight into the history of England during this period.

THE SNETTISHAM HOARDS

For over 60 years, spectacular discoveries have been made on a wooded hillside at Snettisham, overlooking the northwest Norfolk coast, close to Hunstanton. The location of the discoveries, at Ken Hill, is known as the ‘gold field’ because of the large number of gold and silver alloy neck-rings (‘torcs’) and coins recovered from the site. The objects from Snettisham are widely known, but the site has never been fully published. This book is the first comprehensive account of the discoveries and excavations at the site and presents a full catalogue of the finds.

THE ISEUM OF THE ROYAL ISLAND OF ANTIRODOS

In the third century BC, the Ptolemies built a temple dedicated to the goddess Isis on the island of Antirodos. The quayside upon which it stood did not share the strong natural foundations of the island and its banks failed, most likely during an earthquake. This event, dated to around AD 50, brought the temple crashing into the waters of the Portus Magnus on either side of the quayside. In this volume, Goddio examines the archaeological remains from the temple that identify it as an Iseum and discusses its changing role in late Hellenistic and early Roman Alexandria.

SANTA ISABEL

A PICTORIAL HISTORY FROM SOLOMON ISLANDS

Ben Burt, Edited by Geoffrey White

This book traces Santa Isabel’s history through a selection of the many hundreds of pictures of the island made first by Europeans and increasingly by its own people. These begin with the drawings and paintings of voyagers from the late 18th century, gradually succeeded by photos from the 1860s onwards showing the arrival of missionaries, traders and warships. From the 1900s there are photos made by the Europeans who established plantations on Isabel and colonial officers asserting British colonial authority. This is an image-led and accessible narrative providing fascinating new insights into the history of a Pacific island, and offers new insights into the history of photography.

NEW PERSPECTIVES ON ANCIENT NUBIA

Edited by Solange Ashby, Aaron Brody

Ancient Nubia played key political, social, and economic roles in the ancient world, yet knowledge of Nubian societies remains regrettably narrow, with Nubia often disregarded as derivative of Egypt. This volume provides a timely corrective to this outlook, centering Nubian history and archaeology and presenting research from postcolonial and antiracist perspectives. In addition to demonstrating Nubiology’s potential impact on Egyptological, classical, and biblical scholarship, this volume offers a new window into African achievements and dominance in the ancient world.

SAINTS OF SWITZERLAND

Claude Lopez-Ginitsy

This text presents brief lives of early saints from Helvetia (modern-day Switzerland) to aid pilgrims and those wishing to understand the Church’s Universal nature. Over the past century, the Eastern Orthodox Church has rediscovered its Western heritage, influenced by migrations from traditionally Orthodox regions. A key figure in this effort was St. John (Maximovitch) of Shanghai and San Francisco, who encouraged the addition of saints like Columbanus, Gall, Fridolin, and Clotilde to the church’s calendar. It includes a liturgical service and an akathist to these saints.

CHRISTIANITY OR THE CHURCH?

Ilarion Troitsky

How is our Christian faith properly lived? Is Christianity a series of abstract teachings to which we, as individuals, give our mental or emotional assent? Or, as Russian Archbishop and New Martyr Ilarion (Troitsky) argues, is the true aim of Christian life the transformation of our whole being as members of the Body of Christ, His Church? This classic translation is refreshed for the first time with fresh typesetting and interior design, as well as questions for either group discussion or personal reflection.

STORM IN MY HEART A LIFETIME IN MUSIC

John Faulkner, Foreword by President Michael D. Higgins and Andy Irvine

For more than six decades John Faulkner has been at the heart of British and Irish music-making, as a singer, songwriter, composer, musician, producer and film-maker. Storm in My Heart is John’s highly personal account of his life in music, from his childhood in wartime London, through his years in the English folk explosion and on to life in Ireland as a significant player in the traditional music scene. In this honest and witty memoir, John falls under the influence of Ewan McColl and Peggy Seeger, marries tempestuous singer Dolores Keane, and moves to County Galway where he brings his words and music to the world. He has an international number one success with ‘Lion in a Cage’, his campaigning tribute to the imprisoned Nelson Mandela, whom he subsequently meets.

• The author recalls his work with Frankie Gavin, Alec Finn, John Prine and others, revealing the dark arts of the Irish music business while revelling in the freewheeling delights of a life devoted to performing.

THE RETURN OF THE CONTEMPORARY

THE LATIN AMERICAN NOVEL IN THE END TIMES

Nicolás Campisi

Nicolás Campisi combines the fields of post-dictatorship studies and environmental humanities to analyze Latin American cultural production in the neoliberal age. Each chapter pairs two authors from different parts of Latin America and the Caribbean who create a common vocabulary in which to frame the various crises of the region’s present and recent past, such as climate change, forced migration, the collapse of state institutions, and the afterlives of slavery.

SENSITIVE RHETORICS

ACADEMIC FREEDOM AND CAMPUS ACTIVISM

Kendall Gerdes

What kind of harm can language and representation actually do, and how? Claims that students are too sensitive are familiar on and around college campuses. The ideas of cancel culture, safe spaces, and political correctness are used to shut down discussion and prevent students from being recognized as stakeholders in higher education and as advocates for their own interests. Sensitive Rhetorics contextualises and challenges the claims that college students are too sensitive and threaten academic freedom.

SCIENCE, RELIGION, AND THE PROTESTANT TRADITION

ACADEMIC FREEDOM AND CAMPUS ACTIVISM

The story of the “conflict thesis” between science and religion – the notion of perennial conflict or warfare between the two – is part of our modern self-understanding. Unravelling its origins, James Ungureanu argues that John William Draper (1811–1882) and Andrew Dickson White (1832–1918) hoped the enmity they orchestrated between religion and scientific progress would actually preserve religious belief.

The madang is a key space and concept for Korean drummers and dancers. Literally a village circle, the madang is also a metaphor for an expressive occasion or cultural space of embodied participation. Ethnomusicology professor Donna L. Kwon contends that the participatory way of being that is cultivated in the madang counteracts the fossilization of tradition by bringing folk practices more fully into the embodied present, even if in an idealized fashion.

POEMS

Bret Shepard

Winner of the 2023 Donald Hall Prize for Poetry. Landscape and language drive the poems in Absent Here, which explore loss, community, the changing environment, and whiteness of skin and scenery against the backdrop of the Alaskan North Slope of the author’s youth. ARK

Ronald Johnson, Edited by Peter O’Leary

A new edition of Ronald Johnson's masterpiece.

"Of all the ambitious, syncretic, idiosyncratic, American modernist long poems (and we have had more than a few), ARK is the most spiritual, the most celebratory, and maybe the most fun."— Stephanie Burt, The New Yorker

"The poem begins and ends with the U.S. space program, reaches back to ancient Egypt and the myth of Eden, and stops to acknowledge the author's own native Kansas. Though its cosmic ambitions may remind some of Pound's Cantos, or Louis Zukofsky's "A", it is more fun, and happier, than its precursors."—

ARS POETICAS

Juliana Spahr

Lyric meditations on writing poetry in a time of ecological crisis and right wing populism. During the time of an increasingly powerful alt-right, Juliana Spahr sat down to read Brecht. She was looking for an answer to Brecht's question about the dark times, about whether there will also be singing during the dark times. The answer that Brecht provides is yes, poets will sing of the dark times. In the six ars poeticas that Spahr writes, she sings of the dark times but also of coral, the pop song's possible liberation, and the love of comrades.

Inhabited by crows, yetis, coral reefs, and aliens, these poems playfully examine the intensity and conflict of romantic love; the entropic joys of parenthood; illness and grief; and the ways our physical loves and intangible losses teach us responsibility to the world around us.
