£4million invested into NRG Gyms to continue its rollout

PUMA Growth Partners has announced a £4million investment into NRG Gyms – an award-winning, high-value, lowprice group founded by Shafiq Ahmed.

The funds will support NRG in continuing to expand its portfolio of gyms across the UK and the use of data and analytics to improve the member experience while creating a technology-led back-office infrastructure capable of allowing the business to scale at speed.

Shafiq said: “I am delighted that Puma has chosen to continue to support the growth of NRG with further investment into the business.

“It’s a testament to the success of the business and will allow us to continue to grow our member communities, develop our pipeline of new sites all whilst continually investing in the team, people development and infrastructure required to grow further.”

The chain has also recently strengthened its management team with the appointment of Neil Greenhalgh to its Board as nonexecutive director.

A qualified chartered accountant,

Neil spent nearly 20 years at JD Sports, including five years as chief financial officer.

He was highly instrumental in devising and executing the strategy which saw the business grow from a small cap listed business with 330

stores across two countries, to a FTSE 100-listed global retailer.

Neil played a central role in JD Sports opening its own gyms, as part of which he led the Xercise4Less gym chain acquisition process in 2020.

Henri Songeur, investment manager at Puma Growth Partners, added: “We are delighted to continue our support for NRG with funding that will help the business grow its portfolio of gyms and continue to build on Shafiq’s passion for his business, members and his colleagues.

“The strong management team and proven business model have positioned NRG as a formidable operator in a sector expected to be worth approximately £2.8 billion in 2025.

“The addition of Neil Greenhalgh further enhances the company’s capacity to establish itself as a leading provider of low-cost, high-value gym facilities.

“We look forward to working closely with Shafiq, and the wider team, to help realise their ambitions for the business going forwards.”

A SIGNIFICANT increase in life satisfaction for people participating in GP exercise referrals has been emphasised in a survey carried out across Greater Manchester.

It shows the mean scores for patients taking part were 1.9 points better than for those on a waiting list, using a scale of one to 10. By comparison, previous studies of changes in life satisfaction have found that moving from unemployment to finding work leads to an average 0.5-point increase.

The survey has been commissioned by GM Active, a collective of 12 leisure and community organisations representing all 10 local authorities in Greater Manchester, and conducted by State of Life, which works with its clients and government economists on how to measure and report on the socioeconomic value of physical activity.

Using a tried and tested methodology recommended by the Treasury, State of Life has pioneered the creation of Wellby scores by using answers from a bank of more than 200 validated questions from UK data sets.

The GM Active survey of more than 1,700 people either on a waiting list

for a GP referral or taking part in a programme, also shows significantly improved Wellby scores for happiness, anxiety, loneliness and feeling worthwhile.

State of Life founder Will Watt said: “These results are what we call first findings and although there is similar work going on elsewhere, they’re significant because you’ve got a former health minister and Treasury secretary, Andy Burnham, as mayor, and integrated health authorities, so this puts Greater

Manchester ahead of the game in proving the worth of physical activity, and that could influence national guidance.

“What’s more, we’ve carried out what’s known as regression analysis.

“This means we’ve taken into account factors such as age, health, disability, socioeconomics, and employment status to give us more confidence that any positive difference we see in the scores is actually due to participation and not anything else.”

A repeat data collection is now underway – described as creating ‘gold standard data’ – after which the findings will be broken down borough by borough and fed back to GM Active, whose strategy is focused on addressing physical inactivity and improving population health and wellbeing throughout Greater Manchester.

Andy King, GM Active chair, added: “The early results are really encouraging as they help demonstrate the positive impact the referral schemes are having on participants, and this helps us to evidence the impact they are having across Greater Manchester.

Survey shows increased life satisfaction for people taking part in GP referrals Operator launches industry-first membership

EVERYONE Active has launched the You+ membership, becoming the UK’s first leisure operator to offer fully-integrated wellness support to customers.

Developed in partnership with physiologist and wellbeing consultant Oli Patrick, the You+ membership will enhance Everyone Active’s ability to provide 360-degree health and wellness support, both in and outside centres.

He said: “You+ recognises wellbeing is driven not by short term fixes and products, but by consistent adherence to the key behaviours that make us well. A key aspect to You+ is its holistic nature.

“We must recognise that movement and exercise form a part of wellbeing, but do not complete the picture.

“You+ seeks to become a beacon to members in the choices they make across the six key domains of lifestyle.

“Most of these areas have never been formally coached and individuals have been left to work out the key lifestyle choices, with no support, guidance or direction.

“You+ brings a new vehicle to discuss well-being with customers in a format driven by kindness and empathy, underpinned by robust clinical science.”

The principles of the You+ membership will focus on six key pillars, aiming to improve lifestyle management to support wellbeing beyond the core roles of fitness.

The six pillars are sleep, recovery, nutrition, brain health, social wellness and movement.

The product has been developed over the past year, with a training programme delivered to upskill in-centre Everyone Active colleagues as You+ coaches.

The colleagues involved have been provided with the scientific

research and training to lead on the in-site delivery of the wellness pillars.

By signing up for the You+ membership, each customer will receive a consultation from a You+ coach across the six pillars of wellness.

The consultation provides insight to each customer’s current wellness and allows the leisure operator to benchmark their wellness through the ‘Everyone Active Age’.

The ‘Everyone Active Age’ is calculated against the customer’s current age, but aims to give a

measurement of their mind and body’s ‘age’.

This is relative to their overall well-being habits and how they respond to each pillar in the You+ questionnaire.

The new membership is responding to an increased demand for day-to-day wellness support, following the success of Everyone Active’s launch of the Wellness membership in 2023, which received more than 25,000 sign-ups and 25 per cent of all new fitness sales.

Everyone Active manages more than 240 leisure facilities, and the membership gives customers access to a wide range of exclusive benefits – on top of their gym membership – to help with their mind, body and wellbeing.

The new offering will be an upgrade of the Wellness membership, with the integration of HealthHero into its membership benefits and more than 120 offers and product savings from major brands in the wellness space.

HealthHero provides customers access to a virtual GP service through video and phone consultations. Available seven days a week from 8am to 10pm, this service ensures quick and convenient access to practising GPs.

Group partners with Boxercise to provide courses for professionals

THE Fitness Group has partnered with Boxercise to provide online and in-person courses for fitness professionals, to help them upskill and deliver greater value.

Boxercise has been supporting fitness professionals to develop their career since 1992.

The method is based on traditional boxing, with a focus on fitness, not physical combat.

Boxercise involves hitting pads and not opponents, making it a fun and effective workout for improving overall fitness.

Andy Wake, director of Boxercise, said: “The Fitness Group has a reputation for the highest quality educational standards with the same ethos as ourselves of always putting their students first.

“These aligned core values make this an exciting partnership.

“We look forward to working together, always with the learner’s experience and outcomes central to our objectives.”

The partnership will provide new opportunities for The Fitness Group to upskill learners who are already participating in their level 2 Gym Instructor and level 3 Personal Trainer courses.

For the fitness industry, this partnership bridges the gap between personal training education providers and independent providers that offer specialised training.

It will allow fitness professionals a smoother transition into continuing professional development and learning skills that will help them to elevate their business.

Those working in the fitness industry will have access to in-person courses in Glasgow, London and Manchester, as well as online courses, leaving no geographical restrictions.

Steven Dick, co-founder and director at The Fitness Group, added: “Boxercise is a wellestablished name in the industry and has been successfully educating fitness professionals to become Boxercise instructors for 25 years now.

“This is a really exciting partnership, giving us the opportunity to educate our learners to become Boxercise instructors.”

Rena Health & Leisure breaks through the clutter in Southampton’s competitive fitness scene

SOUTHAMPTON’S fitness market is fiercely competitive, with well-known brands like Village Gym, The Gym Group, and David Lloyd dominating the landscape.

However, Rena Health & Leisure, located within the Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour Hotel, has recently made a significant impact by partnering with Creative Fitness Marketing.

Through a tailored, multifaceted marketing campaign, Rena successfully stood out from the crowd, attracting 250 new members and generating an increased monthly income of £4,040.

Breaking through with a multifaceted approach

In a city crowded with high-profile gyms, standing out is no small feat. CFM tackled this challenge by deploying a diverse marketing strategy that reached potential members across various platforms.

The campaign utilised both online and offline methods to ensure Rena reached as many people as possible. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok were pivotal in connecting with younger, tech-savvy audiences.

These platforms allowed the club to showcase its facilities through authentic, engaging content that appealed to those who might otherwise feel intimidated by large corporate gyms.

In addition to its digital presence, CFM employed more traditional marketing techniques, including

leaflets, signage, and corporate outreach.

This broad approach ensured the campaign reached all corners of the Southampton community, from corporate employees to residents who may not engage with social media frequently.

Welcoming new members with a personal touch

One of the key elements that set the campaign apart was the CFM’s staff to making fitness accessible for everyone.

Recognising that many people can feel daunted by the idea of joining a gym, the team focused on delivering quality, personalised tours. Potential members were shown that gyms are for everyone, regardless of fitness level or experience. This welcoming environment, coupled

with a strategic marketing approach, helped attract a broader range of members, from fitness newcomers to seasoned gym-goers.

A smooth and supported journey

Alison, club manager at Rena Health & Leisure, praised the smooth execution of the campaign and the support provided by the CFM team.

She said: “The team here promoting our memberships were amazing, and it was a smooth journey. When I started here as club manager I had no information about the last campaign that was promoted here, but Mike was extremely helpful and gave me all the information I needed to understand the process. This campaign has gone well with the support from Mike and Chad.”

Standing strong in a competitive market

Rena Health & Leisure’s success in Southampton’s highly competitive fitness scene demonstrates the power of a well-executed marketing strategy that hits on multiple fronts.

By blending online engagement with traditional outreach, and creating a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere, CFM and Rena Health & Leisure have proven that even in a saturated market, there’s always room for growth when the right approach is taken.

£400,000 revenue boost after gym refurb

BH Live Active, a cornerstone of health and fitness for the local community in Pelhams, Bournemouth has experienced a rise in both membership and retention just one year after a transformative refurbishment by Pulse Fitness.

The project, completed in late 2023, has driven a 24 per cent membership increase and an annual revenue boost of £400,000.

Following a competitive tendering process in early 2023, Pulse Fitness was selected to deliver the equipment refurbishment due to its innovative solutions and proven expertise.

From July to September, the facility temporarily closed for the upgrades, reopening with 3,365

members and now boasting an impressive 4,100 members just 15 months later.

The project’s success reflects Pulse Fitness’ commitment to delivering tailored solutions, combining cutting-edge equipment with a strong focus on inclusivity.

Alongside this, Pulse Fitness also assisted with engaging pre-launch marketing with the early delivery of key pieces of equipment for a front-of-house showcase to members.

Pulse Fitness prioritises detailed visuals including 3D video flythroughs and renders to ensure the space meets members’ needs and continues to serve as a vibrant community hub.

Richard Sheen, commercial sales director at Pulse Fitness,

said: “We’re proud to have supported BH Live Active on this project, as our shared vision for supporting the local community through accessible and inclusive fitness solutions has been central to every decision.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see how our strategies have delivered real results, both for the business and its members.”

The refurbishment reflects BH Live Active’s commitment to creating a “gym-for-all,” with 10 distinct zones catering to diverse fitness needs.

From juniors stepping into the gym for the first time to seniors in their 90s, every aspect of the facility is designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind.

Key features include:

n A dedicated area for long-term health conditions.

n Cardio, strength, and functional fitness zones for a comprehensive workout experience.

n A thoughtfully placed free weights area, situated away from the entrance to reduce intimidation for newcomers.

Rob Cunningham, director of leisure and business development at BH Live, added: “Pulse Fitness has been an outstanding partner throughout this journey.

“Their expertise, combined with their innovative approach to design and marketing, has not only transformed our space but also attracted a wider audience than ever before.

“We’re thrilled to see the positive impact this has had on our community.”

Providers join forces to transform provision of exercise referral

TWO of the UK’s leading leisure software providers, Legend by Xplor and ReferAll, have announced a new partnership which is set to transform the provision of leisure-based health programmes and make social prescribing and exercise referral schemes simpler.

Legend is a leading supplier of end-to-end leisure management solutions in the UK and Ireland, trusted by the sector for almost 20 years.

ReferAll is the UK’s leading exercise referral platform, which helps operators effectively manage and report on their wellbeing services and referral-based activity schemes.

The collaboration sees the software providers integrating for the first time, meaning Legend’s customers will now be able to seamlessly integrate with ReferAll’s specialist data management platform to manage participant and member data for their health and wellbeing programmes.

The systems talk to each other in the background, cutting out the

need for manual data entry.

Tasks that used to take up to 30 minutes – like finding or creating participant records – will be handled instantly, freeing up valuable staff time to focus on what really matters,

supporting participants.

In addition, organisations can track participants’ progress and compare it with data from other membership sources, to help demonstrate the value and impact of their exercise referral programmes.

Alan Louden, commercial director at Legend, said: “Easy-to-use and secure, ReferAll’s platform enables health and wellbeing teams to manage referrals for multiple schemes, and report on outcomes in real time.

“This is particularly important to Legend as we care deeply about providing a safe, frictionless user experience to our customers, especially with public sector leisure provision pivoting towards a health improvement model.

“Our customers will be able to seamlessly integrate the two platforms, saving hundreds of hours in admin per year.

“This integration will transform the time it takes to manage healthrelated services, helping them run more efficiently and focus on

delivering excellent services.”

Designed and built by industry experts to reduce workloads for service managers, to date ReferAll’s customers have managed more than 725,000 referrals via the platform.

From referrers in a healthcare or community setting to service managers, delivery teams and commissioners, the ReferAll platform offers a 360˚ view of their service.

The data-driven insights it provides play a pivotal role in optimising wellbeing services and improving health outcomes.

Stuart Stokes, founder and managing director at ReferAll, added: “ReferAll is unique in striving to offer integrations with the major leisure management software providers like Legend by Xplor.

“We go over and above to create these integrations as we know it saves considerable time and helps eliminate mistakes for the teams who are managing referral-based health and wellbeing schemes daily, while also prioritising GDPR security.”

£200,000 refurb of town centre gym and fitness hub is unveiled

A NORTHAMPTON gym and fitness provider has unveiled a £200,000 refurbishment at one of its centres.

Cripps Recreation Centre, based at Northampton General Hospital, opened its refurbished facilities recently, which in the words of its managing director John Fletcher makes it one of the ‘most desirable centres in the town for health and fitness.’

Trilogy Active operates Cripps Recreation Centre, Danes Camp, Duston Sports Centre, Lings Forum, The Mounts Baths, the Forum Cinema and Berzerk Active Play Centre in Northampton, as well as Belper Leisure Centre and Berzerk Active Play Centres in Derby and Birmingham.

“We are proud of our work at Cripps and the service it provides to staff at Northampton General Hospital, students and staff from the University of Northampton and the wider Northampton community,” said John.

“Cripps is a thriving hub of activity and this £200,000 boost is a vote of confidence in the centre and its future.”

Trilogy Active has unveiled the investment in its gym which includes new flooring, LED lighting and redecoration across the centre.

New equipment includes eight new treadmills, five ellipticals, an air bike, three half racks, a Smith Machine, four benches, two boxing bags and three ski ergs.

“We are conscious that when a gym is popular the equipment can show wear and tear, even when it is the best quality,” added John.

“That is why this new investment, which includes new kettlebells, medicine balls and wall balls will make a real difference.”

The investment also includes new Sauna

facilities on the poolside at the centre.

Cripps Recreation Centre is also home to more than 70 pieces of state-of-the-art fitness equipment with a calming and stretching studio, MyRide and fitness classes, a functional training studio as well as strength, conditioning and a free weights area.

“We recognise the growing demand there is for membership at Cripps as those working at Northampton General Hospital and those

studying at the University of Northampton understand how important it is to look after their physical and emotional health,” added John.

“We are also seeing growth in Trilogy Swim School at Cripps and with our popular 50+ days now taking place every Wednesday, Cripps really is the place to be in the town centre for health and fitness.

“That is why we are genuinely pleased to make this investment.”

Operator to lead leisure transformation project

ALLIANCE Leisure has been appointed to deliver a £14.8m regeneration project to improve health and leisure facilities in Sheerness.

Swale Borough Council appointed Alliance Leisure to manage this flagship project, which is a key component of the wider Sheerness Revival programme, funded by the UK Government.

Sheerness Revival will breathe new life into the town, providing modern, community-focused health and leisure facilities, improved education facilities and employment opportunities. Together, these are being designed to secure a healthy, prosperous, and sustainable future for Sheerness.

The Beachfields site, strategically located near Sheerness town centre, the waterfront, and the train station, will be completely reimagined.

Currently home to a leisure complex, wellness centre (including a GP surgery), play area, paddling pool, and green space, the site will be transformed into a dynamic hub for leisure, health, and community engagement.

Key highlights of the redevelopment include:

n Revitalised Sheppey Leisure Centre: A reconfigured and extended facility featuring a new fitness suite, purpose-built studios, and upgraded changing facilities.

n Expanded GP surgery: Relocated and expanded within the leisure

centre, providing more accessible healthcare services.

n Family-focused fun: New TAGActive zone and dedicated adventure play area, complemented by a modern café and welcoming reception.

n Outdoor attractions: An exciting adventure golf course, an outdoor gym, and enhanced landscaping connecting the leisure centre to Sheerness train station via improved pathways.

n Sustainability at its core: elimination of on-site gas use, replaced with energy-efficient air source heat pumps, ensuring compliance with biodiversity net gain requirements and supporting the council’s net zero targets.

Councillor Monique Bonney, chair of the council’s economy

and property committee, said:

“Sheerness Revival provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform Beachfields into a modern wellbeing hub that will improve the lives of everyone living and working in the town for generations to come.

“Alliance Leisure’s outstanding leisure development credentials and expertise across all areas of design and build make them the ideal partner to deliver this transformative project, bringing long-term value to our community.

“This is a truly collaborative project bringing together the experienced leisure project team through the UK Leisure Framework owned by Denbighshire Leisure, including Etec as Principal Contractors, GT3 Architects and Varsity Consulting.

“Alliance Leisure will also liaise

with a wide network of community partners such as Sheppey Matters, Serco Leisure, Sheppey GP Surgery, Swale Community Leisure as well as local schools, college and the prisons.

“The investment will enhance the lives of residents and the new facilities will also attract visitors from surrounding areas, helping to drive economic growth and sustainability.”

Early enabling works are now underway, with full construction commencing shortly thereafter. Project completion is expected spring 2026.

Chris Ames, business development manager at Alliance Leisure, added:

“The Beachfields regeneration project is a landmark development that will inspire healthy, active lifestyles while addressing the unique needs of the local population.”

The £20 million Sheerness Revival project also includes an extension to Sheppey College, which will expand educational opportunities in the area, and the refurbishment of former council offices and  conversion of garage space into creative workshops to foster arts and enterprise at Masters House.

These government-funded projects, while separate from Alliance Leisure’s work, complement the redevelopment of Beachfields and collectively contribute to a holistic vision for Sheerness’ future through Swale Borough Council.

Over three-quarters of gym members workout to improve mental health

THREE-quarters (77 per cent) of gym members with a long-term health condition get active to improve their mental health as well as to improve their strength and fitness, according to polling.

Research carried out by Savanta on behalf of ukactive, the UK’s trade body for the physical activity sector, shows more than half (56 per cent) of all gym users saying their membership is important in helping them to follow medical advice and to manage a short or long-term health condition such as cancer, musculoskeletal conditions, diabetes, respiratory diseases and mental health conditions.

The findings indicate that millions of people are realising the wider benefits of physical activity to prevent, improve and manage a variety of conditions, including anxiety and depression.

Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive, said: “These findings show more people turning to our sector to support them in managing a variety of physical and mental health conditions and this is directly aligned to the Government’s own ambitions to move support services from the hospital into communities.

“There is countless evidence to show that physical activity can have direct benefits in the management of health conditions

and it’s reassuring to see that consumers see this value within their health and fitness memberships.

“We need the Government to recognise this and help us to grow the reach and impact of our nation’s gyms, pools and leisure centres to reduce our health inequalities and the pressure on the NHS and improve the health and wellbeing of our workforce.”

More than 8,000 people were polled across January, April, July and September 2024, and of those with at least one long-term health condition, 80 per cent joined the gym to improve or maintain overall physical strength and fitness.

Motivations for a gym membership among people with

at least one long-term health condition:

n 80 per cent said it improves or maintains their physical strength and fitness.

n 77 per cent said it improves their mental health and wellbeing.

n 76 per cent said it improves their overall confidence.

n 69 per cent said it improves their sleep.

For those with no long-term health conditions in the sample, motivation for joining a gym to improve mental health and wellbeing was slightly lower in comparison to those with at least one long-term health condition (75 per cent vs 77 per cent), suggesting that those with health conditions recognise the additional value for their mental

health and wellbeing too.

The findings come against a backdrop of poor national health, with 2.82 million people out of work due to long-term sickness.

Despite this, hundreds of thousands of people across the UK will be taking positive steps this week as they make a commitment to be more active and healthier this year.

ukactive is calling on the Government to capitalise on this demand for greater health support in the community by helping fitness facilities achieve their growth ambitions so that everyone – no matter their age, background or ability – can access these essential services to support their physical and mental health.

Overall, in the UK, more than 17 million people use gyms and leisure centres each year – 10 million of which are members.

ukactive wants to grow the number of members to more than 15 million people by 2030.

Research from Sport England found physical activity helps prevent 600,000 cases of type two diabetes a year, 57,000 cases of dementia, and saves £540m in reduced GP visits.

It also prevents 1.3 million cases of depression, creating savings for mental health services of £780million.

Operator leads the way in compliance with partnership

LIFT Brands, owner of Snap Fitness, has partnered with on-demand fitness team management and cover solution app CoverMe Fitness to set a new standard in compliance within the fitness industry.

As part of its ongoing commitment to ensuring the highest safety and operational standards, Lift Brands has made CoverMe a mandatory component of its Snap Fitness franchise system.

This ensures that all team members are fully qualified, insured and compliant with industry standards.

Paul Stevenson, operations director of Lift Brands, said: “Ensuring compliance and operational efficiency is key.

“CoverMe’s platform streamlines compliance across our clubs, and many with group exercise timetables are enjoying the full management features. Most significantly, CoverMe helps our teams to be more efficient and frees up their time to do what they do best; creating memorable experiences for our members and their local community.

“This partnership reinforces our commitment to innovation and excellence.”

Now integrated into the operations across Lift Brand’s 75 Snap Fitness locations across the UK and Northern Ireland, the CoverMe platform ensures that every instructor and personal trainer is certified and insured,

raising standards across all clubs and creating a safer environment for both their teams and their members.

Rosanna Tucker, CEO of CoverMe, added: “We believe time is the most valuable currency in business.

“CoverMe eliminates the inefficiencies of manual compliance

checks, giving clubs back 10 hours per week – that’s two months of operational time each year so they can focus on growth and the members experience.

“By embracing this proactive approach, Lift Brands is setting a new standard for excellence and leading the future of fitness.”

Clubs offering group exercise are also using the platform to source cover for classes.

John Davies, general manager of Snap Fitness in Tooting, has been using the CoverMe app for several months.

“Finding cover used to be stressful, but I can now just direct the team to the app, where they can easily find cover from a preferred list of instructors, or even reach out beyond that list if needed,” he said.

“Having all contacts in one place has made things much more organised.

“I no longer have to use Facebook or create WhatsApp group chats. I don’t even have to worry about classes being covered when I’m not at work – CoverMe holds instructors accountable if they don’t show up for a class.”

Older adults are ready to exercise but the industry needs to step up

A NEW study shows that older adults would engage with exercise with the right encouragement, communication and access to safe spaces.

When these needs are met, perceived barriers to exercise are far less significant than operators assume.

The research from Manchester Metropolitan University debunks the notion that barriers such as cost, physical limitations and fear of injury heavily influence decision-making. Instead, social factors and personal beliefs about the benefits are far greater drivers of motivation to exercise.

More than 1,200 adults aged 60 and above were involved in the study, which explored the main barriers and motivations for older adults in undertaking powerassisted exercise.

Conducted on behalf of Innerva, the world’s leading manufacturer of power assisted exercise equipment, the cohort included both exercisers and non-exercisers as well as users and non-users of power-assisted exercise.

The research was part-funded by a grant from Innovate UK as part of the UKRI Healthy Ageing Challenge - Designed for Ageing, which aimed to harness the best of UK design talent and inclusive user engagement to develop solutions that helped people thrive in later life.

Professor Paul Smith, who led the research project, said the results were surprising.

“We asked 28 questions about barriers to exercise and discovered

that when people understand what power-assisted exercise is, these barriers have minimal impact on their decision-making, with no single barrier standing out as a major obstacle to exercise,” he added.

“In fact, older adults are more influenced by social factors and personal beliefs about the benefits of exercise, principally whether they believe the exercise is beneficial for their health, is an opportunity to socialise and are encouraged by what other people think of it. These factors have a far greater impact on their intentions than barriers.”

After learning about powerassisted exercise, 92 per cent of respondents said they were willing to try and use the equipment and recommend it to others.

Paul added: “The older adult market is ready to engage once they are made aware of the exercise options available.

“Older adults are a significantly more loyal market segment than other demographics and are

highly likely to share their positive experiences with friends.

“This is a huge, addressable market that is available and represents a great opportunity for fitness and community operators.”

Researchers employed latent cluster analysis – believed to be a first for UK fitness industry research – to understand the different ways in which older adults perceive the benefits and barriers to engagement with power-assisted exercise, and to show the extent to which different groups with different combinations of perceptions are likely to try or continue to use power assisted exercise, and to recommend it to others.

For example, one group of older adults represented a group of older adults in poorer health, who saw significant personal and social benefits and only minor barriers to engaging with power assisted exercise. This group was heavily female in terms of demographic

and included many individuals with multiple health conditions.

This group stated they were extremely likely to try or continue to use power assisted exercise, and extremely likely to recommend it.

Respondents were segmented into six clusters, ranging from those most likely to use and recommend powerassisted exercise to those least likely to use and recommend it.

Only one cluster representing eight per cent of those respondents was unlikely to use and recommend it. This cluster represented individuals who were not motivated by social interaction, tended to be less healthy and less active currently and were sceptical of the benefits of exercise.

The remaining clusters all had relatively modest concerns about barriers to participation, and included both healthy and unhealthy individuals, and active and non-active individuals.

Laura Childs, marketing and communications manager at Innerva, said: “With an ageing population, encouraging exercise among older adults should be a national priority.

“This is the first time the fitness industry has spoken to older adults on this scale to understand their barriers and motivations for exercise.

“The results are incredibly exciting and highlight the vast potential of the older adult market. This demographic is essentially on the verge of embracing exercise, simply waiting for the right encouragement – but no one has stepped up to seize the opportunity.”
