In the Footsteps of the Holocaust unveils a powerful true story hidden for decades through a family’s letters, following the lives of Hermann and Henny Hartog, who, amidst rising anti-Semitism, found courage to fight for survival across Germany, Belgium, and France. Their story illuminates the resilience and humanity of "ordinary" people during one of history’s darkest eras. Escape, Survive – or Die is a superb collection of stories which shows us the resilience and stoicism that we need to face the ultimate challenge.
White Owl examines some of the nation’s favourite pop culture moments, including fifty years of Fawlty Towers and Jaws (released 20 June 1975) and the forthcoming Oasis Live ‘25 Tour. It annotates the episodes with details to assist twenty-first century viewers, collates a wide range of interviews and reviews from across the decades and around the world, and discusses censorship, criticism of the show, and remakes. BOMBER CREW MORALE IN WW2
HOW BOMBER COMMAND’S AIRMEN FACED TERRIBLE ODDS IN THE SECOND
WORLD WAR
Peter Croft
During the Second World War, 125,000 aircrew served in RAF Bomber Command, of whom a staggering 55,573 were killed—about 44% of those who joined its ranks. Despite these odds, aircrews climbed into their aircraft night after night, facing near-certain death. How did they maintain morale in the face of such peril? RAF High Command recognized the importance of morale but struggled to define it. Their efforts focused on discipline, providing reliable equipment, and strong leadership. However, the intrinsic qualities of the aircrews were also vital. The crews, composed of young, patriotic men, showed stoicism, resolve, and camaraderie. The individual actions of each crew member became critical to their survival, and they relied on one another, knowing that failure could mean death.
• Considers how humour and understatement contributed to sustaining morale.
• Studies the RAF’s policy of L.M.F (Lacking Moral Fibre) and the deterrent effect it had on aircrews.
• Extensive primary source material includes correspondence between Sir Arthur Harris and Chief of Air Staff Sir Charles Portal on the subject of morale.

THE BIRTH OF BRITISH AIRPOWER
HUGH TRENCHARD, THE FIRST WORLD WAR, AND THE RAF
Peter Dye
This book describes how Hugh Trenchard became a much-loved and inspirational commander who laid the foundation for British airpower in the First World War, which led to the establishment of the world’s first independent air service, the Royal Air Force. The book also examines how the development of airpower doctrine owed as much to chance as to careful planning and how air superiority was achieved only through sustained effort, underpinned by an effective and responsive logistic system. Finally, it explains how the ethos of the postwar air force was built around these experiences and the collective effort of all those involved in the air war.
• Details how Hugh Trenchard’s unlikely leadership helped shape Britain’s air strategy on the Western Front, ultimately laying the groundwork for the Royal Air Force, the world’s first independent air service.
• Reveals how Trenchard’s success was built on collaboration and perseverance, demonstrating how assembling the right team transformed British airpower in WWI despite personal challenges and limited planning.

THE ARMIES OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION
UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT
Paul L Dawson
The Revolutionary period was marked by upheaval for France and its army. The early Republic’s military comprised former Royal Army members and revolutionary volunteers, reflecting diversity in their uniforms. Despite the chaos, records were meticulously maintained, and Paul L. Dawson examined thousands of documents from the Service Historique Armée du Terre in Paris to detail the uniforms worn before Napoleon’s rise. Soldiers’ clothing followed strict regulations, with each item assigned a specific lifespan. Regular inspections assessed uniform conditions, and unserviceable items were returned and replaced. Repairs were logged, and soldiers bore the costs of replacements. A regiment’s clothing officer managed equipment purchases for enlisted men, while officers supplied their own uniforms. The regimental council ensured purchases met quality standards, recorded in a Register of Uniforms. Inspection returns and registers provide unprecedented insights into Revolutionary army uniforms, much of which was previously unpublished. Though not all regiments’ data were found, Dawson’s research offers the most accurate depiction to date. His book combines detailed records with illustrations and photographs of rare surviving items, giving readers a unique visual and historical perspective on soldiers’ appearances during this transformative era. This information is supported by an unrivalled collection of full colour illustrations, many of which have never been published before. It includes images of original items of uniforms and equipment held in museums and private collections around the world.
• A definitive guide to the dress, weapons and accoutrements of the various regiments of the Revolutionary armies.
• Key documents consulted include the registre de tenues – Register of Uniforms.
• Though at first a combination of the white uniforms of the Royal army and the blue of the Revolution these men were not dressed in rags as is often portrayed.
NAPOLEON’S LIGHT INFANTRY AND ARTILLERY
UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT
Paul L Dawson
This groundbreaking book offers a detailed exploration of the dress of the thirty-seven regiments of Light Infantry and other support troops in Napoleon's Grande Armée, including foot and horse artillery, sapeurs, musicians, and carabiniers. For the first time in two centuries, it accurately examines how these troops were clothed and equipped. Paul Dawson’s research draws from over 1,000 archive boxes in the Service Historique de l’Armée de Terre and the Archives Nationales in Paris. These documents reveal how the 1806 uniform regulations and Bardin regulations were implemented in practice, offering insights previously unavailable to the public. The archives focus on the annual inspections of regiments, where the condition of uniforms and equipment was assessed. Soldiers' uniforms were provided through stoppages in their pay, with a prescribed lifespan for each item. The regimental Council of Administration also drew funds for clothing renewals, repairs, and equipment. Dawson’s study demonstrates that the Bardin regulations, often seen as the standard, were largely a myth until the Waterloo Campaign. Through contemporary illustrations and photographs of existing uniforms, this book provides an authoritative understanding of the actual dress worn by Napoleon’s troops, making previous descriptions of the Grande Armée’s appearance obsolete. Supported by an unrivalled collection of full colour illustrations, many of which have never been published before, the book includes images of original items of uniforms and equipment held in museums and private collections around the world. It draws on a huge array of primary source material translated into English for the first time by the author.
• A definitive guide to the dress, weapons and accoutrements of the Light Infantry showing the differences from the Line Infantry.
• Key documents consulted include a dozen sets of regimental standing orders.
NAPOLEON’S LINE INFANTRY – FROM THE INVASION OF RUSSIA TO WATERLOO UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT
Paul L Dawson
Napoleon’s 1812 invasion of Russia marked a major turning point in his reign. His Grande Armée, consisting of over half a million men, was decimated within six months, leaving only about 10,000 survivors. The campaign cost over a million lives, including soldiers and civilians. Historian Paul Dawson examines the uniforms and equipment of the more than 120 regiments that participated in the invasion and later campaigns. His research, based on over 1,000 archive boxes from the Service Historique de l’Armée de Terre and the Archives Nationales, provides unprecedented detail about the army’s clothing and equipment. Paul Dawson’s study reveals the adoption of the 1806 and Bardin regulations and their practical implementation. Each year, regiments were inspected, and soldiers were issued clothing and equipment, with repairs recorded. New recruits paid for their gear through deductions from their wages, and any damage due to misuse was charged to them. The army faced constant challenges in maintaining uniforms and supplies, from simple vests to more specialized items like epaulettes and tools for sapeurs. This groundbreaking book offers rare insights into the French line infantry’s attire, featuring period illustrations and photographs of existing uniforms, shedding light on what soldiers wore during Napoleon’s final campaigns. The book draws on a huge array of primary French source material translated into English for the first time by the author and is supported by an unrivalled collection of full colour illustrations, many of which have never been published before.
• Includes images of original items of uniforms and equipment held in museums and private collections around the world.
• A definitive guide to the dress, weapons and accoutrements of almost 150 Line regiments.

TRAGEDY AT HALBE
RETREAT FROM ODER AND NEISSE TO THE ELBE
Anthony Rogers, Gerd-Ulrich Herrmann, Uwe Klar
• Tells the extraordinary story of Harry Furness, one of the very few Allied snipers who landed in Normandy on D-Day and survived to reach Germany.
9781805001195 • £25.00
Growing up in a working-class family in Manchester, Harry Furness joined the army in 1939 at the age of 16. Having always been captivated by the stories of First World War snipers, he immediately volunteered for sniper training when the army began to recruit soldiers in 1941. He did exceptionally well, qualifying as a marksman while he was a pre-war army cadet, and was quickly promoted to lance corporal. Just prior to D-Day, he was promoted to corporal in the Green Howards Regiment and landed at Gold Beach on 6 June 1944. Together, he and his comrades began a hard fight across north-west Europe, gradually moving through northern France, Belgium, Holland and eventually into Germany as they pushed the Germans back towards the Rhine. The manifold dangers and occasional humour of Harry Furness’s experiences of war come across in a very matter-of-fact but compelling way here, in the dozens of previously unpublished letters, personal interviews and images that make up Martin Pegler’s fascinating, moving biography of Furness and his extraordinary life.

X2 PATROL
LONG RANGE DESERT GROUP
SEPTEMBER–NOVEMBER 1943
John Olivey , Anthony Rogers
In autumn 1943, John Olivey, an officer in the Long Range Desert Group, was deployed to the Aegean and in October tasked with leading ‘Olforce’ in an ill-conceived operation to take the island of Levitha. Of some fifty LRDG, he was one of only seven to avoid capture there. During the battle for Leros in November, he commanded X2 Patrol at Clidi, a key hilltop position. After British forces on Leros capitulated, Olivey was taken prisoner. While being marched through Athens with hundreds of other prisoners of war, he escaped. Aided by local residents, Olivey remained in hiding in German-occupied Athens, and it was more than four months before he was at last able to return to Allied territory. During this time, he wrote a compelling, brutally honest and often amusing personal account, describing his involvement in what was an eventful and momentous chapter in the history of the LRDG. This is his story.
• A unique first-hand account of the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) in the autumn 1943 battles for the Dodecanese.
• Provides a detailed account of the fighting on the Aegean islands of Levitha and Leros.
• A story of escape from German captivity.

In April 1945, as the Soviet army launched its attack on Berlin, the beleaguered German Ninth Army, along with thousands of refugees fleeing the Soviet advance, found themselves trapped in a tiny pocket near the village of Halbe, south-east of the capital. Instead of surrendering to Soviet forces, the soldiers attempted a desperate breakout. The brutal fighting that ensued led to the loss of more than 40,000 lives – military and civilian. Thousands more were injured or taken prisoner, many of whom would endure years of forced labour in Soviet gulags. Despite the scale of the tragedy, the Battle of Halbe has long remained a historical footnote. Drawing on previously unpublished battle journals and reports, and eyewitness accounts, Tragedy at Halbe examines the harrowing events from the point of view of Soviet and German forces, as well as the civilians caught up in the fighting. Translated into English for the first time, this is an important historical record of this devastating and little-known aspect of Second World War history.
• Helps to bring the little-known story of Halbe to light.
• An important study of the last great encirclement battle of the European war.
• Draws on numerous Germans and Russian accounts, translated into English for the first time.

THE KAISER’S PANZERS
GERMAN TANKS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR
David Mitchelhill-Green
The Kaiser’s Panzers charts the development of German armoured vehicles during the First World War. Late to adopt the tank as an offensive weapon, in a theatre characterised by bloody trench warfare, the Imperial German Army’s fledgling tank force fielded only twenty A7V tanks by the time of the November 1918 Armistice. To rectify this shortcoming, the German army had pressed more captured British Mark IV tanks into service through a dedicated workshop facility in Belgium during the final year of the war. A handful of these vehicles later saw service in the Freikorps to suppress left-wing uprisings in Berlin and Leipzig. Although German tanks had played an insignificant part in the First World War, two early commanders later rose to prominence in the Third Reich: Ernest Volckheim, a leading interwar armour theorist and later Panzer commander, and Josef ‘Sepp’ Dietrich a SS Panzer general implicated in the 1945 Malmedy massacre. Drawing on contemporary records, newsreels and newspaper accounts, The Kaiser’s Panzers is a heavily illustrated record of Germany’s first tanks, the predecessor force to Adolf Hitler’s vaunted Panzertruppen, and will be enjoyed by all military history enthusiasts.
• A heavily illustrated record of German armoured vehicles during the First World War.
• Part of the long-running Images of War series.

THE MOSCOW OPTION
David Downing
On 30 September 1941, the Germans fight their way into the ruins of Moscow and the Soviet Union collapses. Although Russian resistance continues, German ambition multiplies after this success and offensives are launched in Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Hitler’s armies, assured of victory, make their leader’s dreams reality and Allied hopes of recovery seem almost hopelessly doomed. This provocative alternative history looks at the Second World War from a new angle – what might have happened had the Germans taken Moscow in 1941. Based on authentic history and real possibilities, this speculative narrative plays out the dramatic consequences if certain opportunities had been taken and examines the grotesque possibilities of a triumphant Third Reich. With a convincing blend of actual history and alternative events, this fascinating book is a chilling reminder that history might easily have been very different.
• A convincing alternative history of the Second World War.
• Recounts the Third Reich’s real options.
• Demonstrates how the fall of Moscow changed the course of the war.
• A gripping account of what could have happened.

FOR KING AND COUNTRY AT LOOS
THE TALE OF 2/LT CHARLIE HODGINS IN WORLD WAR I
Peter Jacobs
‘Deeply regret to inform you that 2/Lt C F B Hodgins 2/Wiltshire Regt is reported killed Sept 25/26. Lord Kitchener desires to express his sympathy. Secretary War Office.’ – Telegram from the War Office dated 29 September 1915. This is the true and previously untold story of one man’s war on the Western Front during the First World War. Still in his teens, Charles Francis Burgoyne Hodgins, known as Charlie, answered the call to ‘do his bit’ for King and Country. Like so many others, he was never to return. He was killed on 25 September 1915, on the opening day of the Battle of Loos, and is one of many thousands who now lie in cemeteries near the former battlefields of northern France. According to an officer in his battalion, he died ‘leading his men with great gallantry, and even when wounded, tried to rise and take them on’. Drawing on the many letters, photographs and telegrams Charlie sent home, along with newspaper articles, war archives and other personal accounts, historian Peter Jacobs has pieced together the final moments of Charlie’s short life. This is a compelling and poignant tale of personal courage and one family’s loss. But it also tells of the tragedy and suffering experienced by a generation of men during the First World War.
• Tells the previously undiscovered story of 2nd Lt Charlie Hodgins’ time on the Western Front.
• Follows Hodgins’ journey from teenage recruit to his death at the Battle of Loos.
• Includes extracts from Hodgins’ letters home to his family, photographs, telegrams and the newspaper articles following his death.
• A moving story filled with personal details, as well as first-hand descriptions of trench warfare on the battlefields of northern France.
• Additional historical context by author Peter Jacobs helps to create a full picture of Hodgins’ wartime experiences.
BROKEN EAGLES – NAPOLEON AND HIS GERMAN ALLIES IN THE 1813 CAMPAIGN
VOLUME I: CAMPAIGNS OVERVIEW, BAVARIA, SAXONY
John H. Gill
Traditional accounts of the campaigns of 1813 concentrate on the major powers: Napoleon’s France versus Russia, joined successively by Prussia, Sweden and Austria, and how, as in the French catastrophe of 1812, early successes were transformed into ruinous defeat. However, the smaller German states in Napoleon’s alliance system, the Confederation of the Rhine, or Rheinbund, also played an important part. Despite its significance, there are few books, especially in English, that explore the Rheinbund’s creation, evolution and demise. This groundbreaking new work seeks to redress this. Based on years of research in archives across Germany and France, as well as battlefield visits, this unprecedented study provides the first comprehensive analysis of the confederation’s military campaigns of 1813 – culminating in Napoleon’s defeat and the collapse of his German alliance. Presented in two parts, this first volume opens with a description of the Rheinbund as an institution, a summary of its brief history and an overview of the campaigns, battles and sieges of 1813. It then proceeds to a detailed examination of the activities of the armies of Saxony and Bavaria in this critical year. The second volume will continue with an analysis of the forces of Württemberg, Baden and HesseDarmstadt, Westphalia and the multitude of smaller states that comprised the Rheinbund. Supplemented by more than 100 maps, charts and orders of battle, this is an essential reference work for any Napoleonic scholar and all those with an interest in the historical development of Germany.
• The first major study of the military activities of Napoleon’s union of German states, the Confederation of the Rhine (Rheinbund), in 1813.
AFTER THE BATTLE
OPERATION ANTHROPOID
THE ASSASSINATION OF HITLER'S HANGMAN, REINHARD HEYDRICH
John Grehan, Martin Mace
This is the story of the most senior Nazi to be assassinated in WW2. After Czechoslovakia had been dismembered by Hitler, Reinhard Heydrich was sent there to impose the iron rule of the Third Reich Known as the "Butcher of Prague," Heydrich imposed martial law, leading to widespread arrests and executions. In response, the Czechoslovak governmentin-exile, devised Operation Anthropoid to assassinate Heydrich.
Two members of the exiled Czech Army in Britain, trained by SOE, parachuted into Czechoslovakia and despite Heydrich’s suppression of the Czech resistance, local supporters assisted them. On 27 May 1942, Heydrich was attacked and fatally wounded as his car slowed at a bend. What followed was savage, almost unprecedented, reprisals against the Czechs and the death of the two assassins and their accomplices.
• Includes an examination of why Czech President Beneš insisted on the assassination despite warnings that the consequences for the Czechs would be ‘immeasurable’.
• Every location relevant to the story is shown, enabling readers to visit such places today and provides a minuteby-minute account of the assassination.

THE BATTLE FOR KHARKOV
THE DESTRUCTION OF A CITY, 1941-1943
Karel Margry
Kharkov, Ukraine’s second-largest city, was a major industrial hub and a key centre for Soviet tank development during the WW2. Its strategic importance made it a focal point of intense conflict during Operation Barbarossa, changing hands four times. The Germans first captured Kharkov in October 1941, but its factories and machinery had been evacuated. The Red Army liberated the city in May 1942 after heavy losses, with over 170,000 soldiers killed and 106,000 wounded.
Kharkov was retaken by the Germans in February 1943, before finally being seized by the Soviets in August of that year. Karel Margry’s analysis delves into these pivotal battles, highlighting their significance in shaping the outcome of Hitler’s invasion and underscoring the immense human cost of the conflict.
• The city was retaken at huge cost in May 1942, but, as this book shows, by then it was little more than a smoking ruin.
• The fourth and last battle was described by Winston Churchill as being one three battles that heralded Hitler’s fate on the Eastern Front.
• Reveals the four battles through the renowned After the Battle ‘Then & Now’ format.

HITLER’S ATTACKS THAT IGNITED WW2
OPERATION HIMMLER: THE INCIDENTS AT MOSTY AND GLEIWITZ IN AUGUST 1939
Edited by John Grehan
Hitler planned to launch his Blitzkrieg against Poland on 26 August. This involved seizing the crucial railway tunnel and station at Mosty. German forces were detailed to attack Mosty but because Britain signed a defence pact with Poland, Hitler postponed his invasion. Unaware of the postponement, the Germans carried out their attack but had to withdraw. This incident alerted Poland to the impending invasion. Despite this, Hitler was determined to invade Poland but felt he needed justification. So, he engineered a series of ‘false flag’ incidents on the GermanPolish border. On 31 August, Germans in Polish uniforms, attacked the Gleiwitz radio station, broadcasting an antiGerman message in Polish and leaving a dead body — a prisoner from Dachau—in a Polish uniform as evidence. The next day, German tanks entered Poland, the war had begun.
• Details the whole of Operation Himmler which was a series of staged provocations through the participants.
• Analysis of the political situation in the days leading up to these incidents.
• Follows the well-known After the Battle format by including many then & now comparison photographs.

Spielberg’s D-Day
THE MOTIVES AND THE MAKING OF SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
Edited by Dilip Sarkar MBE FRHistS FRAeS
“Tell it the way it really was,” urged US Army veterans to Steven Spielberg as he prepared to depict the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach in Saving Private Ryan. Released in 1998 to critical acclaim, the film delivered an unprecedentedly realistic portrayal of war, hailed as one of the most impactful war films of the twentieth century. Scriptwriter Robert Rodat was inspired by a war memorial in New Hampshire, where repeated family names across conflicts sparked the fictional story of Private James Ryan. While fictional, the story closely mirrors real-life cases like the Niland brothers, one of whom was pulled from Normandy after the deaths of his siblings. To ensure authenticity, Spielberg immersed the cast in military training, teaching them to handle period weapons.
• Explores the full story about the script for Saving Private Ryan, which is considered one of the greatest war films ever made.
• Examines events surrounding other sets of brothers in WW2.
• Reveals the making of the film through After the Battle’s renowned ‘Then & Now’ format.

THE DOWNFALL OF MUSSOLINI
THE ITALIAN DICTATOR’S FATE – FROM DARING RESCUE TO EXECUTION
Edited by Martin Mace
By the summer of 1943, Mussolini’s position had become untenable. On 24 July, he was forced to summon the Grand Council, and the next day, he was arrested by order of Italy's king. Mussolini was held in the Hotel Campo Imperatore for two months before being rescued in a daring operation by Fallschirmjäger and Waffen-SS commandos on Hitler’s orders. Taken to Germany, Mussolini, now a shadow of his former self, was urged by Hitler. As the war neared its end, US troops captured the villa on 30 April 1945, but Mussolini had already fled. He had escaped Milan with his mistress was captured by partisans and executed. This book tells the whole story of the fall from power of ‘Il Duce’.
• Reveals the main events of the final tumultuous two years of the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini’s life.
• Includes a description by the renowned historian Winston G Ramsey on how the story of Mussolini’s last few days was pieced together.
• Reveals the story of Mussolini’s final weeks and days through After the Battle’s renowned highly illustrated ‘Then & Now’ format.
THE BERLIN WALL
EUROPE’S COLD WAR FRONT-LINE: THEN & NOW
Martin Mace
Berlin, situated deep within Soviet-controlled East Germany, became a flashpoint in the Cold War as tensions between former allies escalated. By the late 1950s, the western sectors of Berlin prospered, while East Berlin struggled with economic and political oppression. Increasing numbers of East Berliners sought to defect to the West, turning Berlin into a major escape route. In response, the East German government, with Soviet approval, secretly planned to seal off the city. On the morning of 13 August 1961, the Berlin Wall began to rise, splitting the city for the next 28 years. The Wall became a symbol of division, desperation, and escape attempts. Many tried to cross the Wall, but at least 101 people lost their lives in the process.
• Details some of the escape attempts that were made through, over or under the Wall.
• Covers the events that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, one of the reasons that ushered in the end of the Cold War.
• Reveals the history of the Berlin Wall through After the Battle’s renowned ‘Then & Now’ format.
THE SECOND WORLD WAR IN CARTOONS
Timothy S Benson
Humour is a vital ingredient for the morale of a nation at war. From the John Bull cartoons mocking a hook-nosed Napoleon carving up the world, the caricatures of an obese Kaiser in the First World War, to an often angry Hitler, cartoons have not only portrayed the enemy in a satirical light but have raised a smile in the darkest of times. Selfdepreciating humour is also a facet of cartoons during wartime – making fun of incumbent politicians and incompetent generals – while at the same time challenging the decisions of those in powerful positions. Indeed, cartoons often carry a serious message which exemplifies the subject far more impactfully than the written word. Such is the case with this absorbing, if light-hearted view of WW2.
• Uses political cartoons from both national and regional British newspapers.
• There are also cartoons included from both American and Australian newspapers.
• More than 99% of the cartoons selected for this book have not been reproduced since their original publication.

TACFARINAS: AN AFRICAN REBEL AGAINST ROME
THE NUMIDIAN REVOLT AGAINST THE EMPEROR TIBERIUS (AD 17 TO 24)
Joanne Ball
Tacfarinas, was a North African Numidian auxiliary soldier who deserted from the Roman army and led an insurrection against Rome from AD 17 to 24. He built a small band of fellow deserters and local brigands into a formidable force, training them in Roman style to exceptionally high standards. Using irregular guerrilla tactics, Tacfarinas won some substantial victories. Combining his experience of the Roman army and superior local knowledge to maximum effect, his activities had a significant impact. Disruption of the African grain supply to Rome caused urban unrest which threatened the city itself. It took seven years and four proconsuls to subdue the rebellion.
Thoroughly researched and based on the latest archaeology, this a classic tale of an underdog defying a powerful empire in the name of freedom.
• The ONLY book devoted to Tacfarinas and his revolt.
• Native African resistance to imperialism (in this case Roman) is a subject with topical resonance.
• Tacfarinas served as an auxiliary and the book highlights and discusses the role of North Africans in the Roman army.

THE ANCIENT GERMANS AND ROME, 120 BC TO AD68
RECORDS OF CONTACT AND CONFLICT
Raoul McLaughlin
Despite large-scale military and political efforts, the Romans never conquered or fully subjugated the region they called Germania. Raoul McLaughlin presents new translations of all the significant Roman sources relating to contact and conflict with the Germanic tribes. Their first conflicts began in 120 BC when the Cimbri and Teutones migrated southwards, winning several victories and invading Italy. For centuries thereafter, Germans threatened the empire with raids, invasions and further migrations. In response the Romans launched retaliatory campaigns, pre-emptive strikes and large-scale operations to seize and control Germanic territory. This volume covers events up to AD 68, including Julius Caesar's campaigns across the Rhine, the Augustan conquest as far as the Elbe and the great German retaliation in the Teutoburg Forest.
• The second volume of Dr Raoul McLaughlin's trilogy on the ancient Germans covers their interactions with Rome, characterized by frequent conflict and the constant threat of war.
• Presents original translations of major sources for Romano-German warfare from first engagements to the death of Nero, roughly 120 BC to AD 68.

REVOLTS AGAINST ROME
REBELLIONS AND MUTINIES IN THE FIRST CENTURY AD
John S McHugh
Throughout the first century AD, Roman emperors faced various threats to their rule from ambitious or embittered nobles. Events showed the Roman legionaries to be tenaciously loyal to the Julio-Claudians but the murder of Nero, the last of that dynasty, unleashed chaos driven by ‘the madness of the leading men’. The troops, increasingly recruited outside of Italy, were often happy to support provincial governors against emperors who were themselves usurpers in expectation of tangible rewards. Mutinies were rare and often caused by changes to conditions of service or harsh discipline which demeaned the soldier’s status and honour. John McHugh examines each of the major cases of armed rebellion or military mutiny, skilfully intertwining the narrative with analysis of the underlying causes and the varying degrees of success.
• Covers the Pannonian Mutiny, Mutiny on the Rhine, Revolt of Sacrovir and the Gallic Revolt, the Vindex Revolt and rising of Galba, Murder of Galba by Praetorian Guard, Revolt of Vitellius, Revolt of Vespasian, the Batavian Revolt, Saturninus Revolt.
• Explores the reasons for the various risings and mutinies, preparations for the revolts and their organization, as well as analysing common factors and the varying degrees of success.
• Discusses the imperial responses to such events.

AGRICOLA IN SCOTLAND
THE NORTHERN CAMPAIGNS OF ROMAN BRITAIN’S GREAT WARRIOR GOVERNOR
Simon Elliott
Agricola was the governor of Britain tasked by Emperor Vespasian with conquering the far north of the province for the first time. He launched his first assault into modern Scotland at the end of the 70s AD. Four more bloody campaigns beyond the Solway Firth-Tyne frontier followed, culminating with the defeat of the combined native armies of the far north at Mons Graupius in AD 83. Declaring the successful conquest of the whole island, Agricola commanded the Roman fleet to circumnavigate the whole province for the first time. Simon Elliott draws on new archaeological evidence to show how Agricola was able to campaign so far north of the imperial frontier and, for the first time, the exact routes he followed.
• Agricola was arguably most famous governor of Roman Britain, thanks to biography of Tacitus, his son-in-law
• Agricola campaigned successfully against the Caledonian tribes led by Calgacus
• Simon Elliott investigates the longdebated location of the decisive Battle of Mons Graupius and reveals Agricola’s exact campaign route for the first time.
• Detailed narrative of Agricola’s campaigns and analysis of his strategy and generalship.

ARMIES OF THE ACHAEMENID PERSIAN EMPIRE, 550-330 BC
ORGANIZATION, WEAPONS AND TACTICS
Gabriele Esposito
The Achaemenid Persian Empire was one of the major military powers of Antiquity, conquering vast territories that straddled three continents. Its large population supplied a dazzling variety of troop types, producing a versatile war machine that campaigned from India to Egypt. The author outlines the major campaigns fought by the Persians from its foundation under Cyrus the Great to its conquest by Alexander. He details the organization, equipment and tactics of the many different contingents, including the famous Immortals and such varied troops as Persian archers, scythed chariots, Ionian Greek hoplites, Arab camel riders, Scythian horse archers, Sogdian and Bactrian armoured cavalry, Thracian peltasts, Egyptians and Indian war elephants. The text is complemented by a colourful mix of photos of reenactors and specially-commissioned artworks.
• An excellent overview of armies of the Achaemenid Persia, one of the military superpowers of the ancient world.
• Presents the enormous variety of troop types fielded by the armies that carved an empire from India to Egypt, discussing their weapons, organization and tactics.
• Discusses development and evolution across the period, right up to the point Persia was conquered by Alexander the Great.

BYZANTINE EMPEROR CONSTANTINE V, 'THE DUNG-NAMED'
GENERAL, PATRIARCH, ICONCLAST, REFORMER
Leslie Ivings
Constantine V, was the second East Roman (Byzantine) emperor of the Isaurian Dynasty. A masterful and popular general, he halted the Arab advance and went on the counterattack.. He also continued the legal, social and governmental reforms of his father. Strengthening an Empire that had been close to collapse, he was one of the most capable men to rule from Constantinople. A ruthless persecutor and iconoclast, he was, however, maligned by the monastic Church historians, who posthumously called him ‘Copronymos’ (‘the dung-named’) and even precursor to the Antichrist. Constantine’s shrewd leadership and religious influence invites comparison with the more-famous Justinian I but his military leadership was more personal – he met his death on campaign in Bulgaria.
• Emperor Constantine V was the East Roman (Byzantine) Emperor who defeated the expansionist Umayyad Dynasty.
• He played an important and controversial role in religious matters, intervening in doctrinal debates that caused schisms in the Christian church and was responsible for a wave of iconoclasm.

THE MAHDI AND AFRICA
MUHAMMAD AHMAD AND SUDAN'S MAHDIST REVOLUTION IN CONTEXT
John D Grainger
The story of the Mahdi of Sudan is generally related from the British point of view, though it was more an African event. The Mahdi’s uprising was the latest in a series of Islamic rebellions and wars which began in the eighteenth century. It had a profound effect on the rest of North and East Africa, destroying the Egyptian Empire, provoking Ethiopia into a new unification (which allowed it to resist the Mahdists, Egyptians and Italians); and prompted British preemptive expansion into Uganda. Only after several humiliating defeats did the British (led by Kitchener, with Churchill involved) eventually overthrow the Mahdist state. The author sets the Mahdist wars in the wider context of Islam and the development of African states, but also with a glance forward to modern Africa, where the extensive Islamic uprising is replicating that of the nineteenth century.
• Sets the Sudanese Mahdist Revolt in its wider African context, a corrective to the usual Anglo-centric view.
• Explains the causes and objectives of the Mahdist movement and its widereaching impact on East and Central Africa.
• The Mahdist state (Mahdiyya) fought wars against British-controlled Egypt and Britain itself, Italian Eritrea, Ethiopia and Congo.

THE BRONTË FAMILY SIBLING RIVALRY AND A BURIAL IN PARADISE
Catherine Rayner
This book explores how the Brontë siblings grew up with maternal deprivation and loss and how this affected their development both as children and as adults. It examines how their sibling rivalry led to disharmony and separation, where each of the surviving children became isolated and separated into their own personalities and beliefs. The author examines the relationships between the four younger Brontë siblings and how Charlotte’s role and behaviour changed when she suddenly became the eldest child. The importance of each person’s position in the ‘pecking order’ is shown to reflect on their behaviour and interaction within the family and the outside world. In particular, it takes a detailed look at the position and expectations of Anne Brontë, as the youngest sibling and least expected to excel. There is an examination of her novels, hymns and poetry and reference to possible autobiography and also to her crises of faith. Anne’s last illness and death are particularly highlighted to try and explain her final separation, physically and metaphorically, from her home and family. The irony of her burial in a place known as ‘Paradise’ and her longing to gain a heaven with her family, is especially discussed as a consequence of her overbearing eldest sister ’s character, beliefs and behaviour. This book is not a criticism or discussion of the Brontë's works but an examination of how these four exceptional siblings related to each other and how their relationships affected all of their lives with unforeseen and unexpected consequences.
• An exploration of the Brontë family through the lens of sibling rivalry.
• Find out more about the relationship between Charlotte and Anne.
• Discover why Anne was ultimately buried in Paradise.
JANE AUSTEN’S FAVOURITE BROTHER, HENRY
Christopher Herbert
Henry Austen, Jane Austen’s favourite brother, was born into a large and lively clergy family in Hampshire. Of her seven siblings, Henry most shared Jane’s mischievous wit and facility with words and his support enabled the publication of her novels. Henry’s own life was much more incident-packed than his sister’s. By turns he was an academic, magazine editor, soldier, financier and banker, bankrupt, and finally, clergyman. His career hit the heights of Regency society, becoming linked with the Prince Regent’s set, before plummeting to the social disgrace and economic disaster of bankruptcy. Many of his activities hovered on the brink of illegality and his marriage to the enigmatic French countess, Eliza de Feuillide, also raised questions and eyebrows. Nevertheless, his kindness, charm and his loyalty to Jane never wavered. He ensured her burial in Winchester Cathedral, and he ended his days as a hard-working curate in a Surrey market town and in Hampshire villages. His life sheds a fascinating light on the vagaries of early nineteenth century society and this new and important study examines both his relationships within the Austen family and the many social milieux in which he worked, which, through his recounting of his experiences, may have provided inspiration for some of Jane’s plots and characters. As Jane herself wrote to Cassandra, 'Oh, what a Henry!'
• Discover Jane Austen through the lens of her favourite brother’s turbulent career and extraordinary life.
• Provides fresh and unexpected insights into Regency society.
• Based on careful research that reveals new information about lesser-known periods of Henry’s life.
• For fans of Jane Austen’s novels and those with a curiosity about her wider family and the times through which she lived.
CHARLES DICKENS' SECRET LOVECHILD
AN UNTARNISHED PORTRAIT OF ELLEN TERNAN
Brian Ruck
For nearly a century, the relationship between Charles Dickens and Ellen Ternan has been viewed through the lens of scandal, defined by rumours of a hidden love affair. But what if history’s assumptions are wrong? This groundbreaking analysis dares to ask a question that no biographer has ventured to explore: could Ellen Ternan have been Dickens’ daughter? Examining Dickens's letters and his works from Oliver Twist through to Edwin Drood, this book provides the first comprehensive look at the possibility of a filial bond between the two. Unlike previous biographers, who have focused on the years after 1857, Brian Ruck traces Ellen’s potential impact on Dickens’ life and relationships from her earliest days, casting new light on his increasingly strained marriage to Catherine Dickens. Through careful reinterpretation of existing material, the author uncovers a plausible and previously unexplored explanation that challenges the prevailing narrative. This thought-provoking work does not claim new evidence but offers a rigorous alternative interpretation of Dickens' life, one that weighs the probabilities and presents a fresh hypothesis grounded in literary analysis.
• Challenges nearly a century of assumptions about Dickens and Ternan, offering an original, meticulously-argued perspective.
• Examines how this relationship could have framed his famous works and impacted his marriage, delivering a compelling reinterpretation of Dickens' personal and literary worlds.
• While others have debunked the mistress narrative for lack of evidence, no one has suggested an alternative relationship until now.
• Appeals to readers interested in both biography and literary detective work.

MURDER ON THE TRAIN
A MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE IN EDWARDIAN NORTHUMBERLAND
John J Eddleston

CRIME IN THE VICTORIAN BLACK COUNTRY
Tracey Blundell
Whilst the Black Country had been the cradle of the industrial revolution, towards the end of nineteenth century, the prosperity of the region was at an end, and crime was on the increase. A mainly working-class population was having laws imposed upon it remotely, influenced by middle class morality and ethics. Crime in the Victorian Black Country looks at the crimes actually being committed in the Black Country towards the end of the nineteenth century. It considers attitudes towards the police in this geologically unique and neglected part of the country and offers possible reasons for it. It relates tales reported in the local press of the time reflecting the attitude of the ruling elite and the sort of behaviour they wanted to impose on the working classes, and the reaction to this. Crime is endlessly fascinating, the late Victorian view of criminals and the causes of crime, fairly well known, this work offers a view of the criminal behaviour of working-class people through an alternative lens.
• Offers a look into the Criminal behaviour of Black Country Working classes between 1870-1890 and the attitudes of those enforcing the law.
• Includes material not previously published, drawing upon primary sources and archive literature to paint a picture of criminal behaviour and the possible reasons for it.
• Explores criminal behaviour from petty crime to murder and the attitudes of those committing these crimes.

FINAL FANTASY VILLAINS
FROM FF1 TO FF16
Michael Greenhut
Final Fantasy Villains celebrates and analyzes the major villains of the series, all the way from the original princesskidnapping Garland to the sociopathic Annabella Rosfeld. While other wikis might give dry chronicles of their actions, this book tells us who they are, where they come from, and what motivates them. Are they the heroes of their own stories? What did the original designers intend? In the absence of official intent, what might their backstories be, given what we see on screen? The book even deep dives into some of the more obscure villains, like the opera-crashing Ultros and the school bully Seifer. It also looks at some characters traditionally thought of as heroes in villainous lights, such as Cecil during his dark knight phase and Kain when he succumbs to his jealousy
• Includes write-ups of the best bad guys in the franchise.
• Written by a game developer who's followed the series for 35 years.
• Covers every main line Final Fantasy game.
ROLL TO HIT: AN UNOFFICIAL HISTORY OF DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS
Harry Slater
Roll to Hit: An Unofficial History of Dungeons and Dragons is a deep dive into the story behind the world's most popular tabletop roleplaying game. From its humble beginnings in a basement in a house in a small town in Wisconsin, through the Satanic Panic and the boom and bust of the 90s, all the way to a modern resurgence that has seen the game become a true pop-culture phenomenon, the book tells the tale of the people who have shaped D&D through every step of its development. But more than that, it's a story of leaps of imagination, of shocking circumstances and tragedies, of conflicts and comings-together both on the table and off. From HG Wells playing with toy soldiers to multi-million dollar movie deals, from early war simulations to crazy homebrew campaigns, the book explores the history of D&D and asks why, even after all this time, its name remains a shorthand for the tabletop roleplaying experience. As Dungeons & Dragons reaches its fiftieth birthday, and with the game is as popular as it's ever been, regular players, old school gamers and newcomers are going to find something here to excite and entice. After all, without them, without the players, there'd be no Dungeons & Dragons at all.

• Dive into the movies, TV shows, spin-offs, computer games and more.

HOW WALT DISNEY CHANGED ANIMATION FOREVER
Andrew Stanley Kiste
Most biographies of Walt Disney cover the full span of his life and the full history of his studio, from its start in 1923 until his death in 1966. However, these books, while broad, often give very little detail in the way of the production of its famous films, the operation of its studio, or its major accomplishments. How Walt Disney Changed Animation Forever instead focuses on a key period of the growth, innovation, and eclipsing popularity of the Walt Disney Studio, intertwining its narrative history with the historical context of the 1920s-1950s and the daily life of its founder. Based upon years of historical research including recollections by prominent Disney artists and on-the-ground, in-person experiences at key locations from Disney history, How Walt Disney Changed Animation Forever describes the global impact the studio had on how films were produced for decades to come.
• Places events in the story of Walt Disney and the Walt Disney Studios in appropriate historical context of the 1920s-1950s, including the Great Depression and the Second World War.
• Highlights the technological innovations of the Disney Company and analyses the impact it had on the studio's films and global film culture.
• Includes insight from a number of prominent Disney artists and animators including Ward Kimball, Shamus Culhane, Jack Kinney, Joe Grant, and Mary Blair.

The first book to cover the Fawlty Towers stage plays, this book annotates the episodes with details to assist 21st century viewers, collates a wide range of interviews and reviews from across the decades and around the world, and discusses censorship, criticism of the show, and remakes. The Legacy of Fawlty Towers draws on interviews with the cast and crew completed in 2009, as well as reviews and articles from the last 15 years that have not been covered anywhere before. It also includes rediscovered archive material, original photographs and artwork, and new interviews.
The book contains a comprehensive episode guide with information about filming, the cast, and the crew; a guide to the hotel and its inhabitants; and an abundance of related material from 1975 to 2025. It mentions the war once or twice but I think we get away with it.
• First book to address the stage play, with photos of the play cast.
• Tackles the issues of censorship and editing, reboots, and remakes.
• Annotation for modern audiences.

RED DWARF: DISCOVERING THE TV SERIES
VOLUME II: 1997–2020
Tom Salinsky
Unbelievably, Red Dwarf came back. Its first six series from 1988 to 1993 were quite an achievement, and it’s likely we would still be remembering it fondly if the story had ended there. But it didn’t. Tom Salinsky has been looking at exactly how this show came to be, how it got on the air, and how it stayed there. It’s also a detailed critical analysis, examining why the best episodes succeed and why the less impressive episodes struggle, while also finding time to ask whether the rules of time travel really allow JFK to assassinate himself, should you really rock out with Hitler, do you have the universe on speed dial, and of course whether Series IX really deserves its reputation as the best by miles
• This is the most comprehensive work yet on this beloved science fiction comedy series which has fans all over the world.
• Volume I began with the very inception of the series and now Volume II will go to the most recent episode, released in 2020.
• Includes both a detailed and entertaining account of all the behind-the-scenes mishaps, innovations, near-misses and happy accidents.

A VISITOR'S GUIDE TO LONDON'S ROYAL PARKS
Paul Rabbitts
There are nearly 80 million visits to the Royal Parks every year, making them the most popular destinations in the capital. In 1956, author, poet and critic, Richard Thomas Church (1893-1972) wrote The Royal Parks of London, which was published by The Ministry of Public Building and Works as a guidebook at a cost of 3s 6d net. Many years has passed, and these parks continue to thrive, with new additions, events and celebrations. However, any visitor today will be overwhelmed by the beauty of these historic spaces that boast royal palaces, boathouses, bandstands, lodges, gatehouses, ornamental gardens, sculpture, public art, memorials, places for repose and refreshments. Today the Royal Parks as a charitable organisation is responsible for the care and maintenance of a large collection of historical built assets, comprising primarily of monuments, structures and buildings within the parks, and associated boundaries. This book will take you on a journey from Greenwich Park, the oldest of the Royal Parks, via Hyde Park, St James’s Park, Green Park, Regent’s Park, Bushy Park, Kensington Gardens to the largest of the royal parks – Richmond Park. It is hoped that the reader will gain a greater understanding of how these parks came about, but also to widen the visitor’s knowledge of some of the more unusual aspects of London’s Royal Parks, and to simply encourage the visitor to meander at will among them – the best way to discover the many pleasures within London’s Royal Parks.

RAILWAYS IN DEVON AND CORNWALL IN THE LATE 20TH CENTURY
Peter J Green
This is the latest in a series of pictorial books by railway photographer Peter J Green, who specialises in black and white images. This volume covers Devon and Cornwall depicting the diverse railway scene of the final decades of the 20th century, showing the interesting passenger and freight workings of that period, including the extensive china clay and holiday traffic that existed. The book also covers the branch line operations with first generation rolling stock and the freight only services that existed on parts of the far west of England network. The author is a well-known and respected transport photographer, who has covered railways across the world and this latest offering covers an aspect of the network in the diesel era that is often neglected by writers and photographers of the post steam age. The book also covers the 1986 signalling scheme which swept away many of the traditional Great Western semaphore signalling and the boxes, which dated back to the Victorian era. Locomotive classes depicted in this volume include the Western Hydraulics, class 50, class 24, class 37 and class 47 which were a common sight in this area of Britain at that time. This is a comprehensive survey of the lines and operations that should interest most enthusiasts and modellers of the final decades of the 20th century.
• A good pictorial coverage of the railways in Devon and Cornwall.
• Useful to enthusiasts and railway modellers.
• Well researched text and picture captions.

THE WELSH MARCHES RAILWAY
NEWPORT TO SHREWSBURY, A CONTEMPORARY PERSPECTIVE
Chris Davies
Formally known as the North and West Rout, the Welsh Marches Railway skirts the border between England and Wales from Shrewsbury and Newport. The line is an important link connecting South Wales the Midlands, North Wales and the North West of England, with many cross country train services, both passenger and freight, also the numerous steam specials that have run over the line in the last fifty years. Chris Davies has taken an interest in this line for many years and has spent much time taking pictures of the train services operating along its length, including the present day train services linking Swansea with the North West of England, which includes the last normal train services with full dining cars in Britain, apart from the Cornish sleeper train. The railway runs though some of the most beautiful areas of the Welsh border country linking some of the historic towns along the way from Shrewsbury through Hereford to Newport, it is one of the few railways left in Britain to have an absolute block method of signalling and still has sixteen boxes covering its formation, including the famous Shrewsbury box, which dominates the track layout in that town. Chris Davies is a Geologist who has been a railway enthusiast for most of his life and has visited and photographed railways across the globe during his long professional career, the Welsh Marches Railway is one of his favourite lines, which he has covered in its many moods over a long period of time and this volume is the result of his efforts.
• A selection of high quality photographs depicting the line.
• A good record of all types of traffic to be found on the line.
• A well-researched volume with a good informative text.

THE INDEPENDENT LOCOMOTIVE BUILDERS AN OVERALL HISTORICAL SURVEY
Anthony Burton
This volume covers the history of the Independent Locomotive Builders who supplied locomotives to railways both home and abroad from the earliest days of the industry. Anthony Burton is a well-known and respected historian of transport and industry who has written over a hundred books in this field of research. This book looks at the history of the locomotive building industry, covering the earliest to the latest suppliers of locomotives and how the industry developed and sadly declined in the decades from the end of the Second World War. The work takes the reader from the early days of locomotive design and construction in Britain through the nineteenth century to the twentieth century and the demise of the major builders like the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow and Beyer Peacock in Manchester, leaving only smaller manufacturing companies like Hunslet in Leeds and Andrew Barclay in Kilmarnock to soldier on for a few more decades. This well researched book will appeal to the historian and the railway enthusiast who will be fascinated by the huge variety of manufacturers of locomotives that once existed in Britain, some only building a single locomotive or a one off batch for a given railway. There has been little written in recent times on this subject so a new volume telling this important story in the history of railways should be welcomed by those interested in rail transport. This is a well-illustrated volume with one hundred black and white and colour pictures depicting the history of the independent locomotive building industry.
• A well-researched and written volume.
• Profusely illustrated with some rare pictures.
• A book of value to railway historians and enthusiasts.
BRITISH RAILWAYS IN THE 1960S: EASTERN REGION
Geoff Plumb
This is the fourth and final volume in a series of colour railway books by Geoff Plum, covering the various British Railways regions in the 1960s. This book looks at the Eastern and North Eastern regions, which cover the system from London to the Scottish border. The book has a good selection of steam and some early diesel classes taken during the early to mid-1960s, working on services along the east coast main line and a wide number of cross country lines, many now long closed. Geoff Plum and his late father travelled widely and photographed a large number of locomotive classes in many locations. The book also covers some closed branch lines with scheduled train services and some special rail tours of that period. The books are not designed to convey the complete history of these regions, but to give a flavour of what the railways were like at that time in history. The work has some quite rare colour material depicting classes of locomotive and train working that even then were becoming a part of railway history. Geoff Plum rarely ventured into Scotland and there is not enough material to do a Scottish book, however, this volume does have some Scottish material covering former L N E R lines in parts of that country. This final book should be welcomed by those who follow the former L N E R on the east coast main line and the North East of England, which had a very extensive industrial base and intense freight and mineral traffic.
• A good selection of often rare pictures.
• A well-researched text and pictures.
• Useful to railway enthusiasts and railway modellers.
STEAM HERITAGE, 1986–2000 A PICTORIAL JOURNEY
David Knapman
This is the second volume by David Knapman covering the early years of railway preservation and the early steam rail tours on the main line. The book depicts the locomotives and steam specials of the 1980s through to the year 2000, showing the main line certified locomotives and how they were preserved at that time. David Knapman was brought up in Reigate in Surrey and developed a love of railways and steam locomotives from an early age, later becoming a good railway photographer. The author started to take pictures of trains in black and white in the 1960s, when steam traction was still in normal use, before going on to colour photography in the early 1970s after the end of British Railways steam in August 1968. The book has a wide coverage of steam locomotive types and interesting locations around the whole of Britain photographed during the final decades of the twentieth century. Many of the locomotives shown in the book are now either out of main line certificate or static exhibits in a museum, some are still in use on heritage railways, but seldom venture onto the main line network. This book should appeal to railway enthusiasts who grew up with the early steam preservation movement, especially those who were actively involved with steam preservation and restoration.
• A good well selected collection of interesting railway and locomotive pictures.
• Well written text and informative captions.
• Useful to railway enthusiasts and railway modellers.
BRITISH ATLANTIC EXPRESS TENDER LOCOMOTIVES
David Maidment
GEORGE JACKSON CHURCHWARD, 1857-1933
THE GREAT WESTERN'S LOCOMOTIVE GENIUS
Tim Hillier-Graves
David Maidement has written most of the Locomotive Portfolio series of books for Pen and Sword over the past twelve years, this is his latest creation, British Atlantic Express Locomotives, which tells the history of the main line 4-4-2 Atlantic type locomotives in Britain. The work covers all the main line tender Atlantic types produced for or by companies in the British Isles and covers there entire history from construction to withdrawal. The Atlantic marked a stage in locomotive development from the early 1900s until the end of the First World War, when the Pacific locomotive started to be introduced for top link work. Many of the Atlantic type locomotives had long lives and the Great Northern and the L B & S C R Brighton Atlantics survived longer than any of the locomotives constructed for the other railways, the final Great Northern example not being withdrawn until 1951 and the last Brighton Atlantic in 1958. This is the first serious book on the subject covering all types since the 1960s, which should interest a large number of railway enthusiasts, historians and railway modellers. This volume takes the reader through all the developments during the Edwardian and early twentieth century, looking at all variations from each of the pre grouping and big four railways. There are a number of these locomotives preserved two Great Northern examples in the National Collection and a replica example of a Brighton H2 type on the Bluebell Railway in East Sussex.

DIESEL AND ELECTRIC MOTIVE POWER ON THE SOUTHERN 1980S TO PRESENT
David Goodyear
Tim Hillier-Graves is one of our leading railway historians and has written many books for Pen and Sword in the last ten years. This new work covers the life and achievements of one of the world’s greatest locomotive engineers that of George Jackson Churchward of the Great Western Railway, who probably more than anybody before him perfected steam locomotive technology to a fine art. This is the first book about Churchward since the 1970s and covers much that earlier books left out, in that so much material about his life has since then come to light. There is little dought that this book and its findings shine a light on so much of Churchward’s thinking and concept of locomotive design. The book looks at all aspects of his locomotive designs and gives a knowledgeable run down of the reasoning behind each design. This work will be of tremendous use to people restoring preserving and researching anything designed by Churchward. The volume will also be equally useful to those who wish to construct replica prototypes of his work and those who build miniature live steam locomotives. There are many ready to run models available of Churchward locomotives in all scales, so this book is of use to those who wish to read further into the history of his designs and there operation.

David Goodyear is a member of the Plymouth Railway Circle and a volunteer on the South Devon Railway, he is also a fine railway photographer who is well known for his excellent and often unusual photographic views of railways and trains. This book covers his photographic journeys on the Southern Region of British Railways in the final decades of the last century through to the present day. The volume covers all the main classes of diesel and electric motive power used on the Southern Region and into privatisation, including classes from other regions that hauled cross country train services on to the region. The work is all colour with views of most types of train services operated including the intense commuter train network and the inter regional services. The book will be of great use to modellers and those in the future who might wish to study the railways of Britain under privatisation. David Goodyear has coved the subject from many angles, looking at the various operations across the region, including the large variety of train services both passenger and freight from the 1980s to the present day. This book should be a welcome addition to any enthusiast of the former Southern Region or those who are interested in the privatised railway.

The English Electric Class 37 diesel electric locomotives are some of the most popular and iconic locomotives on the national network. The first members of the class were introduced in 1960 to British Railways and large numbers were constructed until the late 1960s, being used on the Eastern, North Eastern, London Midland and Western Regions originally. Later the class operated in areas across the country on mixed traffic work and could be seen from the far north of Scotland to Cornwall. They are a very versatile mixed traffic type, which can operate on passenger and freight work, they are also used on engineer’s trains by a number of train operators. The class was split into various modified types as there operating lives went on, with modifications being carried out for specialist work by different owners, after privatisation. In the years after the turn of the twenty first century a number of the class were hired out for contracts in France and Spain, constructing new high speed lines, all of these locomotives later returned to Britain. Today there are still examples in use on the national network, working for Network Rail hauling track recording trains and on ballast and engineering trains. There are quite a few preserved with various heritage lines across the country, where they are often used during diesel galas.

CLIFF RAILWAYS AN HISTORIC SURVEY
Peter Johnson
Cliff railways are an invention of the nineteenth century when many sea side resorts boasted one or more of these useful attractions to encourage visitors. Many sea side towns had cliffs leading to the beach and the addition of a cliff railway was seen as a quick and useful way to take visitors down to the beach or lower part of the town. Among the many coastal towns with cliff railways were Hastings, which still has two, Folkestone, Scarborough, which had the first cliff railway in Britain opened in 1875, Lynton and Lynmouth and Aberystwyth. The early examples were hydraulic, however later examples were steam driven and later electric, often as a result of conversion from their original form of traction. Peter Johnson has written many books for Pen and Sword mostly about narrow gauge and light railways, this volume on cliff railways is a new departure and covers all of the British examples. The book is profusely illustrated with many rare pictures and draws on material from many archives and sources. This book should appeal to those who have an interest in more unusual railways and minor operators of local systems. The author has spent many years researching this fascinating subject and has managed to locate material from both private and museum archives, much of it seen here for the first time.
• Newly researched factual material.
• A good selection of often rare illustrations.
• Useful to transport and social historians.
DEVELOPING A MODEL RAILWAY IN TT:120 SCALE
David Ashwood
This is the fifth railway modelling book produced for Pen and Sword by the Market Deeping Model Railway Club and written by David Ashwood. This volume covers the recently launched scale of TT 120 which is manufactured by Hornby Hobbies and Peco showing the reader how to build and develop a layout in this new scale. In the late 1950s Triang Rovex models launched a TT range which was in production from 1957 to 1966, however the new TT 120 scale models are very different in that they are compatible with TT models made on the continent in correct scale and manufactured to a much higher standard than the models of sixty years ago. This book is designed to encourage interest and railway modelling in this new range of fine scale models by promoting its potential, especially in smaller houses and flats where space is often at a premium. The layout projects in this book cover a model of the West of England main line near Teignmouth and a separate layout based on an East Coast location in County Durham, showing two very different prototypes using the stock already available from the Hornby range. David Ashwood shows how to produce scenery for the layout, construct the track and put together the buildings to form a satisfying and convincing layout in this scale.
• An easy to follow text designed to encourage the beginner in TT 120.
• A good selection of illustrations.
• Useful to all railway modellers with handy tips on how to do things.
KAWASAKI – THE GREEN MACHINE
ISLE OF MAN TT, 1966-1986
Matthew Richardson
Kawasaki, eager to grab their own slice of the glory, was the last of the major Japanese manufacturers to enter the highoctane world of Grand Prix motorcycle racing. Although the company had a long history of engineering innovation, it adopted motorcycles relatively late in the day. However, Kawasaki did more than simply copy what the other Far Eastern firms were producing, and struck out on their own with some truly innovative designs. These were machines which are still regarded as classics today. This then is the story of how a previously little-known Japanese conglomerate became a household name in the West, through its trailblazing motorcycles, which were larger and faster than anything that their rivals had at that time. Kawasaki chose to showcase their machinery in the Isle of Man, at the world-famous TT races, and in the 1970s – the era of big hair, big flares and even bigger engines – they ripped up the record book time after time.
The so called ‘Green Meanies’ became part of TT folklore, and the era of Kawasaki dominance was to be one of the most exciting in the history of the event.
• Charts the innovative design and evolution of the big Kawasaki triples and their nimble twins, together with the later four-cylinder four strokes.
• Profiles the riders who made them famous, including Mick Grant.
• Lifts the lid on the tensions and internal politics of a top flight racing team.
• Atmospheric portrait of one of the greatest eras in TT history.
