Nominations set to open for awards By Christina Eccles

GYMS around the country have been urged to tell us why they are the best in the business by entering the 2016 National Fitness Awards – the industry’s biggest free to enter awards scheme. Nominations for this year open on March 1 at www.nationalfitnessawards.co.uk with clubs of all shapes and sizes eligible to put themselves forward for a trophy by filling in the online nomination form. The awards, organised by Script Events and Workout, with support from headline sponsor ServiceSport, are now in their seventh year and recognise excellence in all parts of the fitness industry from the independent gym sector to local authorities and leisure trusts, budget gyms, health clubs and specialist facilities, such as those catering for ladies only, strength training and rehabilitation. Winning an award can put your facility on the map, with past winners reporting benefits including positive local press coverage, an increased profile in their area and a big boost in morale for members and staff. Previous winner Neil Hutchinson

from Burnley Leisure said: “Being part of the awards and regularly winning is a huge bonus for our business. “We won categories in 2013/14 and have been triple award winners in 2015, which was a fantastic experience and a great motivator.” Fellow 2015 winner Alex Shoebridge from The Strength and Conditioning Institute added: “The title of Functional Training Gym of the Year puts us on the map. It helps us grow our business both locally and online, opens doors to new partnerships and makes all the hard work to get to this point worthwhile!" Once nominations close in August, shortlisted gyms will be invited to celebrate their achievements at a spectacular awards’ dinner and end of year party – taking place at The Athena in Leicester on Friday December 2 – where trophies will be handed out to the lucky winners. More details of some exciting additions to this year’s event will also be announced soon, as well as plans for the 2016 National Fitness Conference, which takes place ahead of the awards. Look out for some big updates by following @FitnessAwards on Twitter.

CYBEX International UK has been appointed as an official partner to Miss Galaxy Universe, Europe’s biggest female-only fitness and beauty pageant. Cybex will provide a range of fitness equipment, including the new SPARC, to the fitness champion category, which sees competitors battle it out across a range of disciplines designed to test athletic ability. Founder Sarah Donohue said: “The event encourages entrants of all ages and we try to be as inclusive as possible with the disciplines we choose, whilst ensuring our competitors can push themselves to their maximum and reach optimum performance – the SPARC facilitates exactly that, providing exceptional results with low impact on joints. “By launching Miss Galaxy Universe, I wanted to create an arena where girls are given an opportunity to showcase their fit physique and athletic ability – we want to find the ‘modern woman’ who represents health, inner beauty, strength and individuality and the fitness champion category is a key part to achieving this.”

Sheffield’s Ponds Forge International Sports Centre has new modern features including a Wellness System and MyWellness Cloud equipment.

Multi-million pound gym opens in city By Christina Eccles THE new multi-million pound gym facilities at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge International Sports Centre have been officially unveiled at a special event. More than 70 guests attended, including deputy Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Coun. Denise Fox, the longest serving Fitness Unlimited member, 85-year-old Lydia Turner, as well as Special Olympians Niall Guite and Alexander Thompson. The gym – operated by SIV which is part of Sheffield City Trust – now has new modern features including a Wellness System and MyWellness Cloud equipment to track fitness development, dynamic pressure-sensitive lighting, a sound Prama system which brings the gym’s floors and

walls to life and a new studio featuring Technogym bikes and virtual riding systems. Corporate health and fitness manager Peter Clark said: “We’ve extended the size of the gym floor allowing additional kit to be installed and created a more structured layout allowing members’ workouts to flow more naturally “There’s now a huge functional area including the first Escape Octagon in Sheffield, which means our members can exercise with no limits.” Members can also benefit from toplevel fitness and performance tracking technology with the inclusion of MyZone and MyWellness. CEO of MYZONE Dave Wright added: “We are delighted to be supporting Sheffield City Trust with their endeavour to be UK leading in tech-

nology and services. “All the great amenities and programmes need to have a way to prove that the effort exerted has not gone to waste, and hence MYZONE throughout the facility provides that feedback.” The club is also working hard to build on its links with the local community, creating a partnership with the Stroke Association to deliver interactive, functional training sessions for patients. Plans are also in the pipeline to expand the venue’s current exercise referral scheme to cater for younger patients suffering with mental health problems. Peter added: “The fitness industry changes at such a fast pace and it is important for SIV to be at the forefront.

“As technology develops, so do member expectations. We want to ensure that we continue to meet and exceed the exercise expectations of the people of Sheffield to provide facilities to help them stay healthy, but also introduce innovative fitness options which they may never have tried or seen before, such as Prama. “We wanted our members to feel like visiting the gym was an experience every time. To achieve this, we meticulously planned the layout, lighting and music system. “Many years ago, Ponds Forge gym was a nightclub and we wanted to remember and reflect this heritage in the new design. This has been achieved with interactive lighting, light flushed walls and a music system that increases in volume later in the day.” Advertising

Gyms should offer an online shop to better their overall service By Christina Eccles

GYMS looking to increase their secondary spend and deliver a better all round service to members have been urged to monetise their customer database by offering an online shop. Gym-Partners works with operators to provide a risk free, web-based shop, built to a club’s brand standards and selling relevant products tailored to their client base. The company also looks after sales and promotion, via email and SMS, and works on a profit sharing basis, which they believe helps to ensure both parties are fully invested in making sure it works. Relationship manager Michael Clark explained: “It’s a really inclusive offering. Members can buy everything they need to bring with them to the gym. “In every gym there will be someone using or drinking something they didn’t buy from the gym, so it’s a really good opportunity. “We have a huge back catalogue of brands and offer five shops in one – clothing, footwear, nutrition, equipment and technology. “We’re trying to cover all the big, obvious bases. This way at the point

of sale, staff can walk them through the shop and what they need. “Clothing and footwear are the biggest sellers – everybody needs a top, bottom and trainers. Technology, such as trackers and wearables, is also picking up.” According to Michael, one of the most important areas to get right is the branding of the shop, with GymPartners working closely with operators to ensure it reflects their business and stocks the right products for their membership base. He added: “It’s really important that it’s ‘their’ shop. Members feel strongly about their gym’s brand and want to support it, but you’ve got to have the right products and prices. “We know that getting employees invested in the shop is really important. “We give each member of staff their own codes, so every time a member uses that code, the staff member gets commission. “It’s really simple, with a no hassle factor, and for gyms there are no barriers to getting involved. “But it’s critical the product is totally branded accordingly to that business. The trust between the member and the shop is key.”

Wellness blogger and fitness expert Annie Clarke will lead a lavish yoga and fitness retreat in April, organised by The Well Connected. The retreat will take place at Brimstone Hotel in the Lake District where Annie will offer high energy HIIT classes in the mornings, challenging yoga sessions in the afternoons and then more gentle candle-light yoga and meditation in the evenings. Guests will enjoy delicious, plentiful, nourishing food in line with Annie’s own health eating principles of refined sugar free, gluten free, dairy free and meat free.

Sam and Jack Latus have purchased a neighbouring sports ground to allow them to branch out.

Gym expands to meet increase in demand By Christina Eccles A SUCCESSFUL gym in Hull, owned by two ex-professional rugby players, has expanded to meet growing demand. Brothers Sam and Jack Latus set up Latus Training in 2011, building up a client base alongside their rugby commitments. After retiring from rugby, the pair – who are accredited strength and conditioning coaches – put their focus into the business, originally setting up as a personal and small group training facility. After finding a niche in the local area for people looking for a more exclusive training envi-

ronment, they have now increased the offering at their facility; purchasing a neighbouring sports ground to allow them to branch out and also include memberships and a range of classes. Jack explained: “We’ve been able to expand our gym so it’s now five times as big. It’s good because we have the ability to offer memberships as well and now have classes morning and night. “We’ve made it more accessible to more people. The people who come here are inspired to train – they love it.” The work was completed in November and the gym current-

ly has almost 150 members but Jack told Workout they don’t want to grow too big and risk losing that all important personal service. He added: “All gyms are busy at this time of year but we didn’t massively push it. We’re not keen on people who come for one month and then go. “We’re careful with our membership numbers. With our model, we work with everyone who is a member and we know everyone by name. It’s quality over quantity. “We will have a drive to increase membership slightly – about another 50 to 100 members would be fantastic.” Wearable technology expert MYZONE has unveiled its latest product – a sports bra with integrated technology. Launched at this year’s Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show, the new bra highlights two key fashion trends for 2016 – fitness technology incorporated into clothing and the increasing popularity of sportswear as leisurewear. The bra features a built in sensor strap and clip-on MYZONE module that directly measures heart rate and calorie burn.

Hotel invests in new free weights area BLUNSDON House Hotel has invested in a new free weights gym for the benefit of its health club members, hotel guests and students of T2 Fitness, the personal training academy based at the hotel. The four-star Best Western Hotel, set in 30 acres in the Wiltshire countryside, wanted to upgrade and improve the layout of its gym facility, with strength and conditioning equipment

specialist Absolute Performance winning the tender as a result of a recommendation by a previous client. Absolute Performance also advised on the layout of the new gym to ensure the full space was maximised without compromising on the range of the kit. The new gym includes AP Heavyweight flooring, AP wallmounted half racks, dumbbells and racks; AP adjustable bench-

es; wall-mounted suspension training system and branded soft plyometric boxes. General manager Lydia Baines said: “This new facility is a fantastic resource for our hotel guests, gym members and T2 Fitness. The use of wall-mounted equipment has saved valuable exercise space resulting in a wider range of equipment, and excellent strength and conditioning training options.”

Leisure centre’s facilities to be transformed By Christina Eccles

Fitness Flex Mansfield has been extended to accommodate a range of new equipment.

Pulse completes installation PULSE has completed a £300k installation at Fitness Flex Mansfield, refurbishing the existing facility to create a spacious modern environment kitted out with the latest technology. The company brought the old gym completely up to date and extended the area to accommodate a range of new equipment. The facility now includes 42 pieces of cardiovascular equipment from Pulses’ Series two and three Fusion Cardio line, incorporating treadmills, lateral trainers and elliptical trainers. A large free weights area offers plate loaded equipment, strength stations

and a bespoke X-station functional training rig. All equipment has been fitted with Pulse’s innovative member management software, PulseMove. Head of business development at operator Barnsley Premier Leisure, Steve Roberts, said: “We were impressed by Pulse’s track record and the other facilities that they’ve worked on for us, which are going from strength to strength. “They have shown themselves to be a reliable partner, providing not just market leading equipment but support, advice and excellent service.”

CREATEABILITY and Alliance Leisure Services have joined forces and won the contract to lead the £3.6m transformation of leisure facilities at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre in Bristol. The partnership between the two companies follows the submission of a redevelopment scheme, which the Council and operating trust Circadian Leisure felt would meet the demands of the centre and local community. The brief was to design a health and leisure space that provides an innovative, social and exciting environment with the aim of inspiring local families to adopt a healthier lifestyle. They were also tasked with a design requirement to showcase the Active Lifestyle brand, while keeping external construction to a minimum. Work is expected to take around 12 months. The new facilities at Bradley Stoke include a major expansion of the fitness suite from 85 to 106-stations, a number of new studios including a large 270 sqm room and a multi-purpose exercise studio, a new 12-station toning suite, enhanced soft play facilities and designated party rooms,

along with a 17-station adventure climbing experience. The café is to benefit from an extension, while changing areas will be refurbished and extra parking spaces created. The centre also features a 25m swimming pool, bubble pool, small learner pool, a six-badminton court main sports hall and two squash courts, as well as physiotherapy rooms, In Trim Hairdressing Salon, Bliss Nail and Beauty Salon and a library. Managing director at Createability, Ian Cotgrave, said: “Bradley Stoke is desperately in need of new and improved facilities to meet increased demand from planned new housing and also to improve the fitness experience for existing users. “Circadian Trust is a previous client and our past relationship and the results achieved, coupled with our design expertise and build capabilities, led to us winning this exciting piece of business along with our partners Alliance Leisure.” Alliance are acting as the development partner to the council, and Createability as the appointed leisure, design and build specialist to design and carry out the construction works.

Flood-hit centre hopes lost trade will soon return

The Gym Group has been named as a finalist and Ruban d’Honneur recipient in the 2015/16 European Business Awards, sponsored by RSM. The Gym Group was chosen from nearly 700 national champions by a panel of judges made up of European business and political leaders, academics and entrepreneurs. CEO John Treharne (pictured) was also selected as one of 10 Ruban d’Honneur recipients from across Europe for The RSM Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The company will now undertake a face-to-face interview with the judges in the hope it will be announced as one of the overall winners, at a gala ceremony in June.

Billy creates skin protector AN ex Olympic wrestler has developed a skin protection solution which he believes will eventually be an essential in every gymgoers’ kit bag. Wrestling coach Billy Cooper – founder of Cornermans Self-defence for skin – came up with the idea to create the skin infection prevention foam after being affected by infections that left him unable to train for weeks. He said: “When I was younger I did Olympic style wrestling for Britain so I used to travel to America to train and they used a product over there to help

prevent skin infections.” Billy realised there weren’t any similar products on the British market so set about to fill that gap. The Good Rub barrier foam is manufactured in the UK and will be available to buy directly online, promising to fight 99 per cent of skin infections. He added: “By no means am I saying that gyms are dirty but skin infections can be so easy to pick up and they can be a real set back. “If we get a lot of interest then it would be great to look into gyms stocking the product for members.”

HOYLAND Leisure Centre is looking to bring back lost trade after its sports hall was damaged by flooding last year. Heavy rain damaged the centre’s sports hall floor beyond repair in October. The centre remained open but the hall, which was used for badminton, football and gymnastics, has been closed ever since. Manager Jon McCool is now hoping to restart the rota of events at the facility near Barnsley, after a refit costing £70,000. Jon said: “The sports hall has a sprung floor. It’s state of the art and it’s designed to be easier on the knees and shins. Underneath is an original granwood floor. “After the initial problems with the flooding, we thought the sprung floor was okay. But over a period of three days it began to warp. Ultimately it was damaged beyond economical repair. It was like a trampoline it was so warped.” The leisure centre has had no major refurbishment works since 1974 so the reopening of the sports hall is something Jon wishes to capitalise on. He added: “This might actually be a blessing in disguise. Now we’ve been

Hoyland Leisure Centre manager Jon McCool. forced into a refit, we now have a fully functioning, fit for purpose sports hall.” Jon’s sports hall clients have had to find other facilities while the refurb has been taking place. Among the users are Manchester United which hires the sports hall to run its regional development squad.

Charity challenges can boost team spirit amongst clients By Christina Eccles

National Fitness Awards’ winning Foxhills Club and Resort in Surrey has appointed Sally Raith-Riches as its new director of sales. Sally joins from Radisson Blu Edwardian Heathrow where she was director of sales and marketing, responsible for delivering a total sales target of £26m. General manager of Foxhills Jason Adams said: “Sally has an extremely impressive CV and is the perfect person to help us see our plans of ensuring Foxhills’ long-term future as one of Britain’s leading clubs and resorts come to fruition.”

ADVENTUROUS gyms and PTs looking to boost team spirit among clients – and raise money for a good cause – have been urged to sign up for a charity challenge. Those taking part in an Adrenaline Rush event can choose to run 5k or 10k, challenging themselves to take on obstacles as they make their way around the course 35 per cent of the entry fee goes directly to Macmillan to help fund the charity’s work, plus every additional pound raised through sponsorship, and events are taking place across the country between May and August. Graham Anderson, director at organisers Inmotion Sport, said: “Adrenaline Rush makes for a great group fitness activity that all gyms and personal trainers can get their members and clients involved in. “The course has been designed to be suitable for anyone whilst challenging to everyone and a great deal of fun for all – it doesn’t matter if you have a group with varying fitness abilities, everyone will get a good workout and have a laugh doing so, as well as doing something amazing for people affected by cancer. “Aside from being able to take on the various obstacles together and motivate each other as you go

around, I think it’s just so much more fun to do Adrenaline Rush in a group. Clients jump at the opportunity to put their PT to the test, whilst PTs can make sure their clients don’t take any shortcuts. “A lot of fitness professionals are using Adrenaline Rush as a unique way of inspiring their clients to improve their overall fitness, whilst having a lot of fun and doing something for a great cause.” Founder of Free Hot and Happy, Nikkita Hope-Brown, took part in last year’s event with a group of clients. She added: “The Free Hot and Happy motto is ‘be strong to be useful’ so I love taking part in events that contribute to the greater good of others as well as being challenging at the same time.

“Signing up to Macmillan’s Adrenaline Rush was a no brainer because it helps raise money for people affected by cancer, as well as awareness of a cause dear to my heart, and so it’s a great motivator for my clients to keep training for reasons more meaningful than body aesthetics. “Registering for and actually taking part in an event with my clients as a Free Hot and Happy team had many benefits, for them, my business and myself personally. It built a stronger sense of community and brought us all closer as a group. Even clients who didn't sign up wanted to get involved with fundraising for Macmillan and were inspired by what the others were doing. “We all trained harder and the ladies taking part were more motivated during their workouts and missed fewer sessions. I also got a new client – one of my ladies invited her friend to sign up and she decided she wanted to train with me too. “On a personal level, I find nothing more satisfying than seeing my clients achieve things they never thought they could and the great thing about Adrenaline Rush is that it is both accessible to anyone and a challenge to everyone, no matter what their level of fitness is. It's great for the body, soul and business.”

Social media helps gym to progress By Christina Eccles

Ultra runner Susie Chan after setting a new 12-hour treadmill world record.

Susie sets treadmill world record ULTRA runner Susie Chan has set a new 12-hour treadmill world record with the support of sport science and exercise experts from Kingston University in London. Susie ran a total distance of 68.54 miles (110.3km) in 12 hours in the human performance laboratory at the University's Penrhyn Road campus – beating the previous record for the same time period of 66.79 miles. The record attempt was supervised by senior lecturer in health, exercise

and physiology Dr Hannah Moir and sport scientist Chris Howe, along with a team of 10 sport science and nutrition students acting as timekeepers and witnesses. During the challenge, a live stream beamed from the University on YouTube had more than 3,000 views, hundreds of messages of support were tweeted using the hashtag #susieWRrun, which were projected on to a screen in front of the treadmill to give her an extra boost.

A GYM in Cornwall is going from strength to strength after investing in new facilities and becoming more social media savvy. Gary Dick and business partner Dan Lumb previously worked as trainers at One 2 One Fitness in Wadebridge before the opportunity arose last year for them to become co-owners in the business. Since then the club has seen some big changes, with members being asked for their suggestions on what they would like to see implemented and a focus on building a bigger online presence. Gary said: “A big thing was we tried to increase our social media base. We set up Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and started to get a following. “We also gave the gym a bit of a facelift as it was looking a bit tired. We ripped up the floor, got some new kit in and redecorated. We also took on board member suggestions, such as making more space in the free weights area, and invested in kit such as new dumbbells and mirrors. “Everyone loved the changes and membership sign up has gone through the roof.” The gym, which was set up 13 years ago, is also successfully forging links with the local community; offering classes and the use of the gym in qui-

The transformed gym at One 2 One Fitness. eter periods to schoolchildren and joining forces with other businesses to create special offers for members. Member events are also proving popular including gym based fitness challenges and coffee mornings and races such as Rock Solid in Exeter, which over 20 staff and members will be taking part in. And while reaching out to new members is important, the club places a strong focus on retention, making those who are already attending a priority. Gary added: “For the time being, the people already coming through our doors will be the main focus. They are going to have a big say in where the gym goes and in what direction. “We want them to benefit as much as they can when they walk through the doors.”

UK FITNESS SCENE Legendary fitness guru Mr Motivator is calling on gyms to hold on to the members they’ve got, instead of trying to entice new customers through the door. He spoke to WorkOut reporter Olivia Taylor.

Keep hold of the members you’ve got, Mr Motivator advises gyms BEST known for his colourful lycra outfits and bumbags, in the early 90s Mr Motivator could be found in the living rooms of millions of fans, whipping them into shape via their TV screens with his easy to follow routines and infectious enthusiasm. And now he’s back – on a mission to combat inactivity across the country; re-releasing his iconic fitness routines on DVD and providing his fans with an in depth insight into his life with the release of his new book. Mr Motivator – real name Derrick Evans – said: “I’d love to go back to doing what I was doing in the 90s, because if it was relevant then, it’s going to be relevant now. “We need to get the message of being more active out. It doesn’t have to be aerobic exercise, it can be as simple as going for a walk.” The Jamaican born exercise expert is now providing fans with his inspirational story in the form of his new book – The Warm Up. Mr Motivator – real name Derrick Evans– has re-released his fitness routines on DVD and written a book called The Warm Up. The biography features stories from when he slept rough as a child, and his journey to Leicester at nine years old, as well as offering readers life advice. He added: “Richard Curtis told me many years ago that there was no hurry, but that everyone wanted and would want to know more about Mr M. “He advised me to write the book and release it when I felt the time was right, so it was a relief and a refreshing experience to put words on paper and to see the life I have lived jump out from the pages. “Now everyone will know what I’ve been through; they’re used to seeing me jumping around in colourful

Lycra.” At the age of 63, exercise is still at the forefront of his mind and he’s now urging other fitness professionals to join him on his quest to create a fitter nation. He added: “Health clubs seem to spend so much time trying to get new members, rather than holding on to the people they already have. “When I owned a gym, I focused a lot on internal activities to get my members coming through the doors every day. “I think it's important to mobilise children. Adults already know it's important, if we get children in the routine of exercising, it will become a habit – like brushing your teeth.”

The Spinner RIDE, the Spinner SHIFT and the Spinner RALLY will be unveiled at the International Fitness Showcase in Blackpool.

Bridging the gap between members working out independently in the gym and PT, APEX gym floor training programmes are the latest offering from complete fitness solutions provider Physical Company. Workout editor Christina Eccles tried out a class alongside one very famous face.

High intensity programme aims to re-ignite members’ interest APEX is a series of six, 30-minute programmes designed to revitalise and re-ignite members’ interest on the gym floor – and the concept clearly seems to be working. Sessions, which are designed to be delivered by gym instructors and personal trainers to ensure a high level of interaction with the group taking part, have already been proving popular with Freedom Leisure members and are also attracting attention from other operators who are keen to bring classes into their facilities. Having signed up Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes as an ambassador, the company is now preparing to roll them out to a wider audience and showcased one of the classes – Ignite – with a special session at

Woking Leisure Centre. Here Dame Kelly participated alongside Physical Company trainers, representatives of the local and national press and gym members. And afterwards she told Workout why the sessions are a perfect fit for her. She said: “It’s right up my street. The high intensity, quick sessions suit my lifestyle, as I’m so busy but still want to keep fit. Circuit training is key to me staying strong.” Kelly also added she believes the APEX sessions are great for gyms because of their affordability, the variety of kit on offer to members to try out and the progression structure of the programmes, which change every 12 weeks to keep them fresh. The sessions are also suitable for all

levels of fitness, with participants shown a slightly harder and easier option for each exercise to suit their individual needs. She added: “The Ignite session is short and sharp and after 30 minutes you know you have done something. “What’s good about these sessions is you can work to your own max. How good your fitness is doesn’t matter.” Making these classes accessible to everyone was key when it came to programming, according to Physical Company programme co-ordinator Kelly Edwards, who is part of the master trainer team which prepares the APEX sessions. She added: “It’s important when we coach it that instructors taking the

class are able to coach progression and regression. They need to be able to show the member there is a choice.” Having such a big sporting star on board is also helping to raise the profile of the sessions, with Physical Company managing director John Halls telling Workout the team is delighted to be working with such a ‘fantastic role model’ as Kelly. He added: “Unlike some of the “celebrities” that are around at the moment, Kelly has clearly earned the right to be where she is today. “Her professional, hard-working attitude has made her a household name and we couldn’t be happier to have her as our ambassador for Apex.”

Session gave me a great all-round workout By Christina Eccles AN energetic group training class in the heart of the gym floor is likely to attract attention from fellow gym members regardless of who is taking part... But when you have a group which includes double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes, it’s always going to be a big crowd pleaser; with this session drawing interest from a large group of members who wanted to see what was going on. It’s not every day, you get offered the chance to work out with an Olympian, so when I was invited to try an APEX Ignite session with Kelly, it was an opportunity too

good to miss. I have to admit beforehand I was slightly apprehensive – how on earth was I going to keep up with Kelly?! – but I was also excited; after all not everyone can say they have exercised alongside a world class athlete! We started with a warm up and a quick run through the movements which we’d be doing during the class, with our instructors asking us to mimic them so we could get a feel for each exercise. Working in pairs, we then moved through the six stations of the circuit. At each one there was a piece of kit – battle ropes, power bags, slam balls, kettlebells, RMT Clubs and Surge. At each station we performed two exercises; each one was 30 seconds, followed by 10 seconds to recover. At the end of each station, we then did a one minute cardio “crush it” exercise before moving on to the next station. The circuit was repeated twice – the first time with the cardio station and the second time without – giving us a great all-round workout. My favourite part of the class was being able to try out lots of different

Christina with Dame Kelly. equipment, some of which I would never pick up myself without instruction if I saw it in a gym. I had previously used items such as kettlebells and battle ropes, but things like the RMT club and Surge

were new to me and it was exciting to give them a go and discover their benefits, with the added bonus of having an instructor on hand to ensure I was performing the exercises correctly and getting the best out of each one. I also liked the fact we were all given partners and moved around the circuit in pairs. This meant there was always someone next to me for encouragement and to learn from. The Ignite class aims to make participants leaner, fitter and faster and after just 30 minutes, I have to say it definitely felt like it was working! It was by no means an easy workout – although Kelly made it look that way – but the instructors and my partner were very encouraging and though I felt challenged with some of the moves, I never felt out of my depth. With its clear progression structure and offering an eye catching presence on the gym floor, it’s easy to see where these workouts could fit into many types of gym – and become popular with members. If APEX arrives at a club near me, I’d definitely give it another go!

Why wearable technology in gyms is hot ...

Barnsley resident Adrian Gergley has been presented with a new car, after winning a referral competition with gym chain Fitness Flex. Adrian was one of 1,035 total entrants to the competition, which ran from August to December, and encouraged members to refer friends to win a series of prizes.

Passionate team is key to functional facility’s success By Olivia Taylor A FUNCTIONAL training gym in Pontefract is proving that you don’t need flashy equipment and a big budget to run a successful fitness business. Body Design Fit is a group training club run by a small group of passionate fitness instructors. The club offer a range of classes from TRX to Insanity and Kettlebells to Boogie Bounce. Instead of catering for just one type of audience the team at Body Design Fit understand the importance of starting the fitness education process at a young age, providing child friendly alternatives to every class on their timetable. Owner Simon Longstaff said: “I hate to see unfit kids. Childhood obesity could end up being a strain on the NHS so as a taxpayer I’m trying to do my little bit to educate the kids. It keeps them off the streets and out of trouble. We need to try and make the future generation fitter because they’re our future adults.” Simon understands that gyms can be intimidating for people who are

out of shape, so the club offer a life changing 12 week Fat to Fit programme, with some people taking part losing over seven stone in weight. Simon, who once helped a man shed 20 stone, added: “If personal trainers really are passionate about fitness then it’s important not to be selective when it comes to choosing clients.” The last group of Fat to Fit participants had a joint weight loss of 25 stone, and were surprised at the end of the 12 weeks with the challenge of a 10k road race for Wakefield Hospice. Fat to Fit participant Donna Sanderson said: “I’ve tried going to gyms, this is different, you actually want to come and do it.” The gym isn’t about getting people through the doors, with a pay as you train policy and a community focus, Body Design Fit has created a family in the two years that it’s been open. Simon added: “It’s amazing to have a job where I can make a change. I’m never going to be able to change the world and I’m never going to be a millionaire, but if I can pay my bills and make a difference then that’s enough for me.”

By Dave Wright TECHNOLOGY within the health and fitness sector has been present for years. Biomechanics and the ability to monitor training techniques and energy systems has been at the core of our industry and education almost from its inception. Yet in the past four to five years, the term wearable technology has really accelerated this awareness of data collection and processing within our sector. There are two advances in global technology that has helped with the explosion of wearable technology. 1. The Cloud 2. The smart phone The Cloud: Previously, information collected from a wearable device once had to sit on a local machine. This meant that the device needed to be within the realms of the said computer and then to transfer that knowledge to external people was tethered and clunky to say the least. Nowadays with the cloud, once information is uploaded to a cloud server then it can be accessed easily by anyone anywhere in the world. The smart phone: The processing power that is now available in smart phones and the ease to create software to interpret large amounts of data is now immense. Rather than the local wearable device doing all the programming power, this can now be left up to the smart phone and once processed it then easily pushes it to the cloud for easy data consumption. So computers in the palm of our hands with applications that are forever learning and changing are con-

Dave Wright stantly being released to better process and present the data in a simple to understand format. That all said, for operators to deny the constant evolution of this data collection is naive. Rather than hide from it, operators need to embrace it so that they can better serve their members as wearable technology devices move into an even more acceptable world. Dave Wright is the CEO of CFM (Creative Fitness Marketing), CEO and creator of MYZONE, owner of the Feelgood Fitness and Voyage Fitness Club chains, a former board director of ukactive and founder of the IOU. PT Adam gives speedway star edge on rivals By Olivia Taylor

A PERSONAL trainer is proving that the right type of exercise can help any sportsman’s performance. Adam Copley has been working closely with Sheffield Tigers’ speedway captain Simon Stead at Be X Fitness in Hillsborough, improving his performance drastically. Adam said: “You can definitely tell 100 per cent that it’s improved his performance, he’s already a very skilled rider but the training has given him that edge. “We’ve seen some fantastic improvements to his strength and fitness. “Speedway riders have multiple heats over the course of one race meeting, Simon has to be able to function at a highly intense rate over a number of short races.” Fans’ favourite Simon sees Adam three times a week, and since they have started training together he has helped him overcome an injury last May that seriously affected his performance. While competing for the Tigers at Rye House he was airlifted to a hospital in Cambridge after the heat 15 smash where he underwent emergency treatment for a fractured arm and a shattered femur, resulting in him having metal plates inserted. To help Simon in his recovery and over all performance, Adam has worked with him on a variety of different exercises, from circuit based weight training using slam balls and battle ropes to compound and isolation exercises. Adam added: “Simon has understandably suffered drops in strength

Thousands set to flock to trade fair EACH year in April, studio operators from around the world flock to the trade fair to get an overview of the innovations in the industry. Visitors in 2015 hailed from more than 100 countries and every corner of the globe – and divided into the three segments FIBO Expert, FIBO Passion and FIBO Power, the event offers something for everyone. One of the themes dominating the fitness industry in coming years is technological progress, leading to FIBO Expert and FIBO Passion focusing in part on digitalisation in fitness studios, with an emphasis on electrical muscle stimulation training, apps,

online applications in studios, mobile devices and wearables. FIBO director Ralph Scholz said: “Our biggest challenge for FIBO 2016 is definitely how to appropriately depict the digitalisation theme. “We have to deal with the consequences of so many fitness industry spheres becoming digitalised. Exhibitors at FIBO approach this issue from vastly differing perspectives. Our goal is to tie it all together.” FIBO Passion will re-launch with a brand-new concept in 2016. The exhibition space will be expanded to three halls featuring significantly enhanced shopping and

active participation areas. Major sports apparel brands and manufacturers of fitness shoes, textiles and accessories have already booked their stands. Sports fashion trends will be presented at the new, centrally located catwalk. Another area will be the Active Hall, which will turn FIBO itself into one giant fitness studio. FIBO Power is Europe's biggest meeting point for the bodybuilding, weight training and martial arts community. Participants in 2016 will once again include famous brands such as All

Stars, Biotech USA, Dymatize, Gym Aesthetics, IronMaxx and Scitec Nutrition. Taking place in Halls 10.1 and 10.2, FIBO Power 2016 will be expanded yet again. Sector challenges and innovations discussed at Tour By Christina Eccles

World of digital fitness set to be explored at summit AS part of FIBO, the German Industry Association for Fitness and Health will stage a trends and innovations summit exploring the world of digital fitness. Taking place in Hall 5.2 at FIBO 2016 from 10am to 5pm on April 7, the DIFG event will discuss the topic from a variety of different perspectives. Presentations by science and technology experts will be complemented by real-world practitioner reports, with the aim of the event to convey the nature of these developments and their consequences in terms of risks and opportunities. In the first of three modules, IT investors and renowned scientists, among others, will discuss developments as they relate to digital fitness

and health trends. The second module will focus on the digital transformation of the fitness sector, while the third module will feature cutting-edge fitness entrepreneurs sharing their real-world experiences with digital fitness concepts. Each module will start with about three brief lectures and finish with an expert discussion moderated by sports scientist and digital health management professional Christopher Grieben. In addition to the DIFG Summit, FIBO will host a forum with digital fitness products and services. The registration fee of 79 Euros includes admission to the summit as well as meals. FIBO tickets must be purchased separately.

Dame Kelly to showcase APEX PHYSICAL Company will be among the exhibitors at the show, with Olympic legend Dame Kelly Holmes showcasing the new APEX gym floor programming, for which she is an ambassador, on the stand. The double gold medallist will be talking about APEX and a number of demos by Physical Company master trainers will be running throughout the show.

After the sessions, interested visitors will have the opportunity to step up onto the stand and try their hand at some of the exercises. Physical Company is also showing its latest kit at the event, with new training rig The Forge set up on the stand, alongside recent additions to its functional equipment range including Titan Bags, Swamp Boxes and Tyre2.

PRIOR to the show, a group of exhibitors from FIBO joined keynote speakers from scientific institutions and associations at the FIBO Innovation Tour to discuss fitness sector challenges and innovations. This year’s tour stopped in Istanbul, Moscow, Warsaw, Milan and Stockholm and about 500 studio operators attended the one-day seminars, alongside representatives of the national fitness markets. The event series was hosted by FIBO and the European industry association EuropeActive, in co-operation with the local fitness associations in the respective countries. Competition and opportunities for growth were at the centre of the keynote speech, delivered by managing director of Oxygen Consulting Ray Algar. His lecture, “What is the role of your fitness business in a world where consumers have more choice?”, provided an overview of new choices in the market. In today’s environment, he argued, studio operators must content with a multifaceted range of competitors: personal training detached from gyms, open-air choices including running meet ups and group fitness programmes taking place at new locations, to name just a few. Ray said: “Over the past 10 years I have observed the rise of low-cost gym brands with their laser focus on providing just the essential facilities and attracting members who are happy to serve themselves in exchange for very low monthly membership fees which can be as low as ?8 per month. “More recently we are seeing the

This is creating a challenging environment for multi-purpose clubs who now need to redefine their brand story.” Additional lectures were presented by EuropeActive and Deloitte. FIBO international ambassador and EuropeActive board member Herman Rutgers added: “This was the third FIBO Innovation Tour, and it was the best one so far – we’re noticing more and more excitement among manufacturers and operators in the various cities, which we visited for the first or sometimes for the second time already. “On tap for next year are our first stops in Vienna, Barcelona and Riga, plus our second visit to Paris and our third one to London.”

XPT – the ultimate training partner PERFECT for a gym’s free weights area, the XPT is a Power Rack that combines the desired benefits of free weights with the safety of machine weights by including a Patented Quad Lock Braking system with a Unique Linear guided Barbell. The XPT’s barbell is incorporated into the rack, but unlike a Smith Machine it enables vertical, horizontal, diagonal, lateral and rotational bar movement and this engages all muscle groups as in free weight training. The patented quad lock braking system incorporates two levers on the bar. These are closed by the hands as

they grip the bar and when breaking is required, simply opening the hand automatically releases the lever and engages four solid steel locking pins, catching and stopping the bar in any position.

This also makes the equipment ideal for performance athletes wanting to do explosive movements such as jump squats, as the braking system allows the user to leave the bar in the air. Designed by Super Bowl winner Brady Poppinga to enhance his own top end speed, power and explosiveness at the end of his career, the machine allows members to enjoy the benefits of explosive movements, while giving peace of mind to the gym owner who no longer needs to worry about the safety aspects associated with free weight training. Our latest line of environmentally responsible bikes and ellipticals has taken technology to the next level. Now micro-inverters are housed inside the shrouds so there are no extra cords or boxes to manage. Simply plug the bikes and ellipticals into the wall, and the excess energy goes back into the facility’s power grid National business development manager Roger Eldergill added: “Sustainability can be a driver for increased engagement with current and new stakeholder relationships. “Organisations are looking at implementing programs for improving the health of their employees, which can create a culture of health and also reduction of their carbon footprint.” SportsArt’s ECO-POWR technology allows for individuals to make a real difference, lowering an organisation’s carbon footprint. The new £11.9m centre will be managed and operated by Places for People Leisure and will include a six court sports hall, six lane 25m swimming pool, a learner pool with moveable floor, fitness suite, dance studios, climbing wall and small outdoor football pitches. Visitors will also be able to enjoy a café with viewing areas, a double height adventure play area, a poolside health suite with steam room and sauna and free parking. It will also save the Council up to £500,000 a year.” Development director at Places for People Leisure, Peter Kirkham, added: “This partnership with Wyre Forest District Council is an incredibly strong one that has been nurtured over the past few years. “We have all worked hard to reach this point and it is fantastic to see

how far the project has come along in the past few months. “Now that construction is past the half way point, the local community is one step closer to having a state of the art leisure facility in Wyre Forest. “Our aims, as they were at the start of these project, continues to be to focus on how we, along with the local council, can create ways in which to improve the health and wellbeing of the Wyre Forest community. “This ties in well with the government’s latest sports strategy which stipulates that sport and health should be united and delivered by local authorities as a whole. Soon residents will be able to partake in a range of activities at the new high quality facility and confidently engage in exercise and sport.”

Charles Ogilvie of Minimise Solutions explains how gym owners can take steps to ease the upfront costs associated with going green.

Can it pay to be sustainable? BIG or small. Chain or single gym. Regardless of size, there’s no escaping the fact that energy makes up a significant portion of a gym’s operational costs. Long opening hours require constant lighting and temperature control, and for those with pools there’s the additional requirement to manage and treat water. In an ideal world, whereby we all want to do the right thing for the environment and community, sustainability would be a key priority. But for many the challenge of running a profitable business takes precedence and ‘nice to have’ sustainability measures are sidelined for higher priority requirements. And yet, simple sustainability upgrades, such as switching existing lights to LEDs, installing lighting controls in specific areas, changing air handling unit filters to improve performance, or eliminating unnecessary water flushing can significantly cut energy consumption costs, often by

more than 40 per cent. Clearly, these are not ‘nice to have’. These are upgrades that should be made if you can afford to do so. But many believe they cannot. This is not due to ignorance or lack of desire – but more a lack of readily available funds. Capital constraints in any growing business make for tough choices and it’s hard not to sympathise with a decision to focus investment on areas that more directly impact on user experience. However, with the right funding partners, sustainability programmes, particularly in the area of energy efficiency, can be carried out with no upfront capital contributions, with the cost of the finance paid from the savings achieved. This makes for a hugely compelling win-win for the gym owner. And for the climate. With energy prices predicted to continue rising in the long term, savings of this type will become increasingly important to bottom line performance and competitiveness.

‘With the right funding partners, sustainability programmes, particularly in the area of energy efficiency, can be carried out with no upfront capital contributions, with the cost of the finance paid from the savings achieved.’

Charles Ogilvie With the right funding package and the right technology, energy efficiency based sustainability programmes can be free at the point of installation, with finance payments made from the savings achieved, leaving a healthy share of the savings in your pocket (on your bottom line). It is also important to choose the right supplier with complementary products and ensure that they are focused on ROI to maximise financial benefits. With these factors in place, you can feel like you’re getting a free sustainability upgrade –which then delivers lower cost energy bills as an ongoing efficiency benefit. For larger projects this upgrade can be funded off balance sheet. For

example, those seeking to make the switch to LED lighting can apply for a funding package that looks a lot like a service contract, but includes a full refresh of lighting. If you move ahead with a lighting services agreement, you’ll make energy cost savings from day one. The costs of the technology products and the installation will be charged, based purely on a share of actual savings made, so the technology and installation are totally de-risked. Smaller projects can be financed through simple hire purchase arrangements, meaning that whilst on balance sheet, you do qualify for an Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA). ECAs provide a tax break on energy saving products, and, for example, good quality LEDs fall within this category. Businesses can currently count 100 per cent of the value of the asset as a capital write down in the first year. So, if you know where to look sustainability doesn’t have to come with a cost attached. It simply needs a commitment to do things better and more efficiently, which surely is what every business desires. FINANCE AND INSURANCE

Joint venture unveiled PPL and PRS for Music have unveiled plans to create a joint venture, which would focus on serving all PPL and PRS for Music UK public performance licensing customers. The new company, jointly and equally owned by PPL and PRS for Music, will further streamline the experience for customers obtaining public performance licences, allowing them to secure a joint PPL and PRS for Music licence with a single phone call or a few clicks on the web, paid for with a single invoice. Over the coming months, PRS for Music and PPL will be undertaking

the necessary preparatory work for the joint venture, including engagement with regulators and other key stakeholders. It is anticipated the new company would start licensing in 2017, followed by a 12-month period during which the full transition of public performance licensing would be completed. Chief executive of PRS for Music, Robert Ashcroft, said: “Creating a single point of contact for our UK public performance customers would allow us to significantly simplify music licensing for UK businesses.”

Ensure consistent cash flow with managed Direct Debit payments Have you got the right insurance for your personal training studio? MANY operators use Direct Debits as a consistent and easy way to collect money, however issues arise when members start to lose interest or default. Cash flow and Credit Control are a big aspect of a successful operation. Often operators don’t have the resources to undertake this area of their business efficiently and are losing money every month without always realising. Streamlining Direct Debit payments by employing the latest governance and utilising online systems to attract, maintain and manage these payments, ensures you are able to maximise on each and every Direct Debit paying member. A direct debit facility should help to stabilise attrition rates and increase the length of stay of members.

DFC uses the latest technology to efficiently collect Direct Debit payments making life easier. DFC also offer your members convenient ways to pay through their online portal ‘My Payments’. These systems help you to keep on top of defaulting and cancelled customers. OVER the past couple of years many personal trainers have set up their own personal training studios. Finding yourself in this position you will need to ask questions of your current insurance. Is it purely providing cover for your liability as a personal trainer? Does it cover the increased turnover and additional liability in respect of premises occupied and employees or subcontractors? If you rent out space to other personal trainers do they have adequate insurance in place and is a record kept? Do you provide other activities such as outdoor bootcamps? When insuring property you may remember to insure fitness equip-

ment but what about improvements to the premises such as flooring, partitions, showers or mirrors along with loss of income if the new premises are damaged and cannot be used for some time? Make sure your insurance is as fit your customers want to be. For more information contact John Ansell and Partners Ltd on 020 7251 7474 or visit www.ansell.co.uk

SUPPLEMENTATION AND NUTRITION

Make establishments show calorie counts, say councils THE Government should make it a requirement for pub, restaurant and cinema chains to spell out calorie content in food and drink, as part of its upcoming child obesity strategy, it has been claimed. Chains with more than 20 outlets should clearly display calorie counts on menus and at counters to give consumers more informed choice, according to the Local Government Association, which represents more than 370 councils. The call follows a similar initiative in the US, where rules were brought in making it compulsory for chain restaurants, movie theatres and pizza parlours across the country to show calorie information on their menus. The LGA’s community wellbeing spokesman coun Izzi Seccombe said: “Pub, restaurant and cinema chains

Healthy food delivery service Fresh Fitness Food teamed up with BOOM Cycle to put a healthy twist on Pancake Day. Participants enjoyed a class at the London based indoor cycling studio before tucking in to a plate of superfood matcha green pancakes, topped with Oppo ice cream, Pip and Nut nut butter, yoghurt and fruit.

Research finds differences between organic and non-organic products ORGANIC milk and meat contains about 50 per cent more beneficial omega-three fatty acids than nonorganic, according to study published in the British Journal of Nutrition. The study – led by Newcastle University and an international team of experts – also showed the nutritional differences also apply to organic dairy like butter, cream, cheese and yoghurt. Chief executive of the Soil Association, Helen Browning, said: “This research confirms what many people have always thought was true – what you feed farm animals and how you treat them affects the quality

of the food – whether it’s milk, cheese or a cut of meat. “These scientists have shown that all the hard work organic farmers put into caring for their animals pays off in the quality of the food they produce – giving real value for money. “Organic farming methods require all organic farmers to adopt techniques that guarantee nutritionally different foods. Following research in 2014 confirming nutritional differences between organic and nonorganic crops like fruit and vegetables – we can now say for certain that organic farming makes organic food different.”

need to be displaying calorie counts so consumers and parents have a more informed choice and a better understanding of how healthy a particular snack, meal or drink is. “Food and drink with high calorie content is clearly a factor behind obesity, and the subsequent health problems it can cause. “We want the Government to require major retailers to make their customers fully aware of how many calories they are eating or drinking. “Clear and prominent signs indicating the number of calories in a product should be mandatory. “We need to take bold action in changing our environment if we are to beat obesity, and that includes when we’re sitting at a table in a restaurant reading a menu or ordering at the counter.”

Adapt Nutrition launches new supplement range ADAPT Nutrition has launched a new advanced supplement range. The range, which currently boasts six products including Adapt Nutrition Pre-train, a potent amino acid based pre-workout product designed to increase athletic performance, has been developed to optimise workout results. Founder and managing director of Adapt Nutrition, Adam Dickinson, said: “I have been involved in sports nutrition for 17 years, and have always been interested in sports supplements and how they are able to take training to the next level. “I felt there was a gap in the market for advanced supplements, and a demand for smarter supplements which pinpoint deficiencies in certain nutrients needed for top results. “The products we have developed are carefully formulated with health

and fitness in mind, in order to achieve optimum results. “We are very proud of the range and have had a great level of interest in the products. We have secured listings with two online retailers already and hope to add more in the very near future.”

Which fitness clubs will make it or break it in 2016?

By Matthew Januszek, Escape Fitness

AS I travelled around the globe over the last 12 months, I talked with owners of many different businesses in many different countries. What has become clear to me, is wherever I went and whatever business sector I looked at, businesses and business models are being majorly disrupted. In today’s world, businesses seem to fall into two camps: either the ‘disrupters’ leading the way by totally reinventing the way they service a market, or the ‘disrupted’ who are having change forced upon them, continually being on the back foot and scrambling to reinvent themselves or face extinction. Disruption in the fitness industry Just a few years ago, in 2005, whilst listening to my newly released Apple iPod Nano in a Big-box full-service fitness club, it seemed this new Bigbox fitness formula was unstoppable. In Europe, these fitness brands were being valued at, and exchanged for, over $1b. A few years later in 2012 as I worked out to chart topper ‘Gangnam Style’ on my newly launched iPhone 4, these ‘stars’ of the 2005 stock market were now being sold by hedge funds at a huge

loss, and in several cases going out of business altogether. The disruptors responsible for this downfall of the mid market clubs, were the low-cost operators, offering a no-frills approach, often with extensive use of technology. Traditional gyms struggled to compete with their new rivals who were offering monthly fees often more than 50 per cent lower than the national average. Now in 2016, the landscape is changing again. A new type of competitor is emerging, offering a premium price, high-touch, instructordriven fitness experience. Soul Cycle, Barry’s Bootcamp, 1Rebel and Orange Theory are all part of a new breed offering new fitness experiences for a new consumer. The Millennials are their new target customer – for whom it’s all about having their friends like their Instagram posts as they check in at the hottest studio in town. The dialogue has changed from ‘how little I pay to workout’ to ‘how much I do pay’, with a single session at a boutique studio or club costing more than a month’s membership at a low-cost gym. Choosing your future As my team and I look at the year ahead and do our best to anticipate

Matthew Januszek what the future holds for fitness, I am certain it will be a year of great change, in which there will be new winners and losers. This means great opportunity for some, and a year of fear and uncertainty for others, but the important thing to remember is every business owner has a choice about which category they will join. When faced with disruption and uncertainty, it’s easy to have a thought process along the lines of ‘we don’t know what’s going to happen, so how can we plan anything?’ But uncertainty needn’t be a barrier to planning and taking action.

The fact the future is uncertain should be a driver for planning, as well as for innovation and risk-taking. To steal a famous quote from futurologist, Joel Barker, “When a paradigm shifts, everybody goes back to zero.” In other words, when an industry is disrupted then it’s not just you but all of your competitors that are levelled to the same starting point. The rule book has just been ripped up, nothing is off limits and nothing is impossible. Your biggest competitor may now be standing shoulder to shoulder with you at the starting line with no more of an advantage than you. So how can you be one of the disruptors, the winners, the game changers, for the year ahead? Here at Escape we are proud to have built a reputation for delivering business solutions and innovation and are grateful to get invited by some of the newest, most aggressive start-ups looking for help and ideas, as well as by some of the largest operators in the world looking to us to help them innovate and grow their businesses. I wish you a fantastic and exciting year ahead. I would love to hear from you and your views on this subject. Email: solutions@escapefitness.com

Facility offers the latest New group exercise kit at affordable prices brings STEP to life By Christina Eccles A BARNSLEY gym is keeping both college students and the local community happy; offering the latest kit and classes at an affordable price. The Sports Village at Honeywell is situated on the Barnsley College campus and is open to students, who pay £15 per month, and external members, who can use the facilities for a monthly fee of £16.99. The low membership prices and no contract offer, combined with access to a wide range of Matrix equipment, functional training sessions such as TRX workshops and a timetable of free classes – plus the option to pay a reduced fee for others taught by external instructors – has proved appealing, with the club enjoying a successful start to 2016. Sports centre manager Anthony Berry said: “Colleges have a key role to play in promoting health and wellbeing and supporting our young people and communities to become more active. Excellent facilities, a wide range of affordable opportunities plus highly-qualified, friendly and helpful staff are key factors that will help engage more people in leisure and physical activities. “Very few towns and cities have a college that offers outstanding facilities and services like these. The facili-

The Sports Village at Honeywell. ty provides student athletes with the resources to improve physical fitness and enables them to compete at their highest standard whatever their chosen sport.” The club opened in October 2014 and currently has a membership base of just under 400 people. And Anthony, who previously worked for bigger gym chains before taking on his current role, told Workout he enjoys working for a smaller club where he has more flexibility to make decisions and implement new ideas. He added: “We’re more sociable because we have a smaller membership base – and we try and listen to people and what they want. “It’s also easier to get stuff done. If I want to do a membership offer, it’s my call. It’s a lot more rewarding.”

ESCAPE Fitness and Zumba are pleased to announce a partnership that brings together the world’s leading dance-fitness programme with a stylish new product for group exercise – the brand new Escape STEP. In January, the innovative step solution was trialled in Zumba Step classes on the Zumba Cruise, a five-day party that set sail throughout the Caribbean on Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas. Escape co-founder Matthew Januszek said: “We are proud to be working with Zumba as both companies share a passion for creating meaningful exercise experiences through design and innovation. “Zumba has a fantastic position as the leaders in dance-fitness and Zumba Step is an important part of that programming. “Together, we aim to take the step experience to a new level and an even wider audience.” The Escape STEP platform solution is lightweight and the patented locking system allows for easy transportation as well as easy transitions from horizontal to incline work. Additionally, the design allows for

more efficient stacking and storage as the platforms fit easily inside each other. Gym relations manager at Zumba Anna Colosimo added: “Escape is a global leader in fitness products and Zumba is excited to partner with the company on the release of their new step platform. “There are many ways to support each other as we further revolutionise the phenomenon of step in the group fitness space.” For more information email sales@escapefitness.com or visit www.escapefitness.com

Advertiser’s announcement

GYMetrix makes new appointment to facilitate international expansion GYMetrix started work last month with Spanish budget chain, Viva Gym, as part of its international expansion. Launched in 2011 following the University of Edinburgh’s business incubator scheme, GYMetrix has

Adam Bright

worked with hundreds of public and private sector operators across the UK. It is now expanding its operations overseas after securing a number of international contracts. Following its success relationships with Pure Gym and The Gym Group, GYMetrix has been appointed by Viva Gym, a low-cost gym concept with 60,000 members across 16 sites in Spain. The chain is backed by Bridges Ventures, the fund manager which supported the successful roll-out of the The Gym Group. Bridges now intends to accelerate Viva’s roll-out through additional site openings over the next five years, with a focus on the major Spanish cities. GYMetrix will work with the group’s sites in Madrid using the data from its studies to assess Viva’s new-build gym model. The contract follows the recent

completion of projects for two health club chains in Boston, USA. GYMetrix worked with Healthworks, a large 120+ station female-only facility and a budget gym, GYMit, to optimise their upcoming equipment purchases and adjust any flaws in the layout of their gyms. More contracts for the USA and Europe are in the pipeline. Matt Harrington, president of GymIt, said: “We always had 'feelings' for what we should do equipment wise and have regrets for purchasing items that we do not need. “Gymetrix was able to put tangible data behind these 'feelings' to allow us to make real decisions.” To help facilitate its international expansion, GYMetrix has appointed Adam Bright to help with analysing and presenting existing clients projects as well as introducing new clients to GYMetrix services. Bright, who has a degree in law,

has worked in the fitness industry for nine years with former roles including fitness instructor and personal trainer with LA Fitness, fitness director on a cruise ship and most recently an operational position in corporate fitness. “These are exciting times for GYMetrix. In the last three years we have grown from two to 14 employees and are now beginning to expand internationally to meet the growing demand for our services,” says GYMetrix founder, Rory McGown. “It’s great to see the growth in the number of operators using hard data and facts to determine what their members’ want rather than relying on guesswork or what equipment reps tell them. “It means they can deliver a better, more cost-effective service resulting in happier customers, which is what we should all be
