Gyms could reinvest with VAT vouchers, claim By Christina Eccles PRIVATE gyms who pay VAT on memberships could improve their own facilities – and the health of local communities – if they were given vouchers enabling them to re-invest that money back into their clubs, an independent gym owner has claimed. Operator Andy Peacock owns Warehouse Gym in Honley, West Yorkshire, and told Workout that over the years he has become increasingly frustrated with what he feels is unfair competition. As a private gym owner, Andy pays VAT on his memberships, while another club nearby, which is registered as a charity doesn’t have to. He says he understands it’s not realistic for all clubs to be exempt from paying VAT, but would like to see a more even playing field where all gyms were treated the same. He explained: “It seems to be one rule for one and one for another. “The VAT that we pay could be sent back to the gyms in the form of vouchers for kit from preferred suppliers, could be used for setting up after school clubs for kids, or to help us raise standards in the industry by training

more staff in specialist areas such as exercise referral.” Andy also said he would like to hear how he could adopt the charity business model at his own club, as he is keen to do more to support charities and the local community himself; and saving money on VAT would allow him to do this. He has approached his local council and representatives from Kirklees Active Leisure to ask the question and is currently awaiting a response. He added: “The key thing for me is that if some gyms can do it, why can’t I and that’s the conversation I want to raise. “Why should us as private gyms be segregated from everyone else? “I’ve been here for 10 years. In that time, what could I have invested in my business with that money?” Andy also told Workout he would be keen to hear from any other gyms who feel they are in a similar position, so they can talk about ideas on how to move forward. Personal trainer Kim scoops ‘one to watch’ competition TOP personal trainer Kim Ingleby has been crowned ‘the one to watch’ in a global Life Fitness competition – beating nine other shortlisted entrants from all over the world. Kim, who is the founder of Bristol based business Energised Performance, saw off finalists from as far afield as Hong Kong, the USA and New Zealand to win the Personal Trainers to Watch programme, after the group were asked to demonstrate their training skills in front of a panel of industry experts at a special judging event at Nuffield Health and Wellbeing Centre St Albans. Each finalist was randomly paired with a volunteer who acted as their client for the demonstration and was asked to develop workout routines for them utilising the Life Fitness Synrgy360 personal training system based on the client’s fitness level and goals. Judges then scored the personal trainers on their ability to enhance the client experience, with criteria including building client confidence, motivating the client, appropriately adapting exercises and progressing and regressing exercises as needed. Kim was crowned the winner, scooping a prize which included

$5,000 USD toward her personal training business and a personalised award plaque. She said: “I feel truly blessed to have been a part of this, and to have been selected as a finalist, let alone the winner among such talent and passion. The spotlight that Life Fitness has put on the personal training industry through this competition is extremely important in helping spread the global fitness experience.” Kim, who through the event has forged strong links with the other finalists and hopes to work with them in the future, also told Workout that the experience has been made all the more special by the fact she was originally nominated for the award by her clients – and because she has recently returned to full health after battling Weil’s disease. She added: “It was really exciting, particularly having been so unwell. I was quite speechless. I’ve worked in the industry for 15 years and feel really humbled. It was also amazing to meet all the other finalists, who were really inspiring. All of us agreed that being in the final was invaluable and we have made lifelong friendships from it.”

Tradespeople among fittest finds study

Small group training boosts profits and retention, claim

TRADESPEOPLE such as builders, plumbers and carpenters, are among the nation’s fittest workers, according to a study. Research from Direct Line for Business shows this type of worker typically exercises for 16.4 hours per week, over six times the NHS’ minimum recommendation of 2.5 hours. The study found that 41 per cent (1.1m) of builders, plumbers and carpenters complete more than 10 hours of physical activity a week at work and are also keeping fit outside hours too, achieving an additional average of 4.69 hours of physical activity through playing sport and working out. Britain’s 2.8m tradespeople are also looking after their diets, according to the study, with only one in 14 claiming they consistently eat more than their recommended daily allowance and 81 per cent claiming to lead healthy lives. Nutritional Therapist practitioner at Harley Health Sonia Ayadi said: “As we become more aware of our diet and general health, and with the government constantly raising awareness of healthy eating (i.e. five a day fruits and vegetables), tradespeople have always been amongst the most active workers when compared to the typical office-based professional.”

SMALL and medium group training is becoming a new trend in gyms looking to increase their profits and retention figures, according to an expert. Allan Collins spoke to delegates at Leisure Industry Week, advising them on how to utilise functional areas and equipment in their clubs to provide an additional income stream and offer members something different in the form of group training sessions. Allan said: “Small and medium group training is fast becoming a key area for many clubs. Small is usually sessions of between one and four people, while medium is five to 12 people.” According to Allan, this type of training has many benefits for clubs as it often takes place on the gym floor – so can be run alongside an

existing studio timetable – promotes the usage of a gym’s functional area and can act as a marketing vehicle for personal training. Clubs can either choose to include the sessions, which often incorporate functional kit such as kettlebells, suspension training and ViPR, in with their membership prices, or can charge participants extra to take part in them, providing the gym with a valuable additional revenue stream. Allan added: “Sessions can be offered as part of membership, but if charging separately, a good indicator is between £4 to £12 per session. “Price should depend on the quality of a session and how many people are in it and sessions must always be delivered at a high standard to justify the additional price. But if something is of high quality and of value to them, people will pay for it.”

Allan Collins

Key points to consider for a group training session ... KEY considerations when setting up a small or medium group training session in your club: How much equipment is needed? What are the additional requirements, things such as storage space or anchor systems for suspension systems need to be considered. Location – are you going to hold

the classes in a studio or on the gym floor? There are pros and cons to each. What are you going to call the class? Giving it a generic term such as a functional HIIT class gives more scope to vary the sessions, rather than calling it something like kettlebells which is more specific.

Will you allow your trainers the freedom to develop the sessions themselves or will you give them the programme to deliver? How regularly will you update the classes? Content needs to be kept varied and interesting to justify any additional cost and stop members getting bored.

New social network matches clients with the best personal trainer for them By Christina Eccles A NEW social network for the fitness industry has launched, which matches clients with the best personal trainers for them based on personality and training goals. UKFitBase is a free to join website for personal trainers that focuses on being able to match clients to trainers based on the site’s personality test. Founder Dale Sims explained: “I’m a personal trainer myself and when I asked my clients why they chose me as their trainer, many said it was because they thought I seemed like a nice person. “I thought there has got to be something in this, as it seems often people buy into the trainer and not the training, so I looked around and there was nothing like this available.” The site is free to join and the test asks both trainers and clients a set of questions upon joining up, focusing primarily on how the trainer conducts their sessions. From the responses gathered, the site matches up a selection of trainers who align to the potential client’s answers, then gives them a percentage compatibility rating, meaning the client can then pick the trainer which they think is the best suited to them. Dale added: “We believe that everyone likes to be trained differently, some like to be shouted at, some like to be coached, others like to have fun. “Whatever it may be, everyone is different, which we believe is where a lot of client/trainer relationships go

wrong because both of their expectations aren’t met.” The site also gives trainers the chance to promote their businesses and showcase their talent, as well as providing an online resource for the public where they can go to read articles and watch videos on fitness and nutrition, provided by trainers who are UKFitBase members. Dale added: “I truly believe that there is something calling for this in the fitness industry and that it has the possibility to make a big difference into how gyms run and how personal trainers are seen.”

DAVID Lloyd Leisure has been voted Heart Safe Gym of the Year, recognising its investment in life-saving equipment and staff training for its clubs. Organised by the charity Hand on Heart, which aims to prevent deaths of young people who die due to a sudden cardiac arrest, the Heart Safe awards are the UK’s first to celebrate organisations which invest in ‘heart safe’ environments and individuals who have saved lives while at work or leisure. David Lloyd Leisure, which has invested in defibrillators for all of its 81 UK clubs and 10 in Europe and provides a regular training pro-

gramme for staff to use the life-saving equipment, was presented with the accolade by TV presenter and comedian Paddy McGuinness at a ceremony at the Radisson Blue Edwardian Manchester Hotel. Caleb Brown, of David Lloyd Leisure’s health and safety team, who was a finalist in the Heart Safe Trainer of the Year award category, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won the Heart Safe Gym of the Year award, which is fantastic recognition for the significant work the company has carried out to ensure all of our clubs are equipped and our teams trained to save lives.”

The gym commits itself to furthering the continued journey of the customer. We are thrilled to be able to open the world class facility to the public and we strongly believe it will change the fitness industry in the UK.”

Expert offers top tips so operators can reap benefits of social media By Christina Eccles

EXPERT Matt Bradney has revealed his top tips for independent operators who want to make the most of social media to boost their businesses and better engage with members. Matt, who is director of Chatty Social Media, spoke to delegates at Leisure Industry Week about everything gym owners need to know on the topic of social media – and how they can get started on popular sites such as Facebook and Twitter. His top tips included: Make sure when using Facebook, you set up a business page and not a personal one. Utilise the ‘about’ section of your profile well to let people know more about your club – and include a link to your website. Choose a good Facebook cover image to go at the top of your profile, which doesn’t contain too much text. Build an audience by promoting your social media sites e.g. using your email signature to include a link to your Facebook and Twitter pages. On Twitter, make sure you post often and consistently – but don’t bombard people with too many Tweets. Keep your updates short and concise – research has shown posts which use 80 out of the available 140 charac-

ters get a 27 per cent higher engagement rate than longer ones. If you ask questions, people will start to engage. You could ask members about their favourite classes or more about what they would like to see in your club. Make your posts personal – tag people in responses. Keep jargon to a minimum as not everyone will know what you mean. Remember that it’s always nice to welcome and thank new people to your page. Social media is very quick moving and people demand fast responses – use a SmartPhone to keep on top of updates when you’re on the move. Make sure the ‘private message’ function on Facebook is enabled. Some members may want to ask a question or interact, but may be reluctant to post their comments where everyone can see them. Make sure the content isn’t promotional and is used to engage with followers. Use Facebook for competitions and giveaways. Matt added: “Make sure your content is well written and that it’s relevant to your company. Your online reputation is now as important as your offline one. Social media is a two way street and you want engagement from your followers.”

Editor’s Comment FROM a husband and wife team securing funding to open their dream studio, to a new budget gym opening in Rotherham and a £1m refit at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, this month we’ve been taking a look at some success stories and revealing lots of positive news for the industry. While putting this issue together, we’ve been speaking to clubs from all around the country and it’s been great to hear so many examples of both new clubs popping up – and existing gyms who are investing in improving their facilities to enhance the member experience. In what has been a difficult economic climate, it’s encouraging to hear of operators who are doing well and coming up with innovative ways to make their facilities stand out, with other examples you can read about this month including Velocity Health and Fitness in Coventry – where the manager and her team have worked hard to turn around the club’s fortunes – and Fight Science in Aldershot, where owner Nick Chapman is planning to roll out an ambitious franchise programme. The Workout team has also recently enjoyed visiting Leisure Industry Week, where we caught up with show regulars and met some new faces – you can take a look at our pick of news from the event on pages 46 and 47. We’d love to know what you thought of the show this year as well, so get in touch with your comments... Also this issue, we speak to UK personal trainer Kim Ingleby about what winning a global Life Fitness award means to her, reveal how plans are going for the almost sold out 2013 National Fitness Awards and round up the latest news on indoor cycling, training and recruitment and refurbishment. Over the next couple of months, we’ll be turning our attention to the New Year, looking at what to watch out for in 2014 and upcoming industry trends. So if you have any thoughts, as always, we’d love to hear from you. Send your comments to ce@scriptmedia.co.uk or contact us on Twitter or Facebook. Christina Eccles

Advertiser’s announcement

Container Gym concept makes debut at LIW The new 100-station gym at Hatchford Brook Golf Course.

Gym forms part of £2.5m state-of-the-art facility HATCHFORD Brook Golf Course will re-open next month following a major £2.5m investment, which includes a modern 100-station gym. This is the second major investment in the region from Mytime Active who last year took on a 50-year contract to run Birmingham City Council’s seven golf courses. The revamp of the Hatchford Brook clubhouse has taken place over the last year and has seen the former building transformed into a state-ofthe-art leisure facility. The new clubhouse now includes a bar and café, high quality changing rooms and the gym. Improvements have also been made

to the golf course. Mytime Active chief executive Steve Price said: “We are pleased to be reopening this refurbished facility, our second major investment project in the Midlands this year. “Our goal with all our investments is to create an affordable, accessible and enjoyable place to play golf and get fit and active, and Hatchford Brook is no exception. “We hope the changes to this facility will open up the golf course up to a wider variety of people and enable us to attract more golfers and local people keen to improve their fitness and wellbeing by using our golf course gym.”

FOLLOWING long term discussions and development with the US Military, Leisure Lines GB and Cybex were pleased to present their Container Gym concept at LIW. Both companies have extensive experience of providing training solutions for military needs around the world and given the transport approach of the military it has made great sense to develop a fully functional gym that is both transported in and utilises a shipping container as part of the gym space. This gym concept really gives military around the world what they need for high quality, low injury risk training, with a training approach that does not follow short term marketing driven fads, but is the result of numerous discussions with training experts in both the military and civilian world regarding best practice, as well as utilising the know how of the Cybex and Leisure Lines GB teams. The gym itself can be assembled or packed away in just over an hour, and in-situ provides a high quality training environment for up to 60 soldiers.

The Tactical Athlete Training Facility is designed to contain two Cybex Arc Trainers either lower body or total body and two Cybex Bravo Functional trainers. The internal container space now has the ability to deliver high intensity interval training with low impact on body for combat soldiers in a variety of environments worldwide, as it is available with optional climate control and lighting. The outside of the container is fitted with various rigs, in addition to a freestanding rig which can be sited at some distance from the container, thus providing space for additional exercise and the use of appropriately chosen small equipment. Whilst the Container Gym concept has been designed specifically for the Military there is also great potential synergy with educational establishments, council facilities and sporting organisations. These gyms are the way of the future for many establishments, especially when linked to provision of an all weather surface and suitable overhead weather protection.

The manager of a Coventry gym has told how her team has turned the business around completely – transforming it from an old and tired facility into a club which is now stacking up top award nominations. Christina Eccles took a look around.

The functional area at Velocity Health and Fitness features the latest kit including Myzone and Synrgy from Life Fitness (left) and the well-equipped CV area.

Listening to members and a ‘fresh new team’ the key to turnaround VELOCITY Health and Fitness is situated within the Village Urban Resort – a complex which also includes a hotel, restaurant and Starbucks coffee shop – and has been open for about 13 years. The club currently has about 4,000 members and is consistently one of the top performers in the Village Group’s league tables for both guest ratings and business performance. But when manager Ceri Powell was brought in at the beginning of 2012, it was a very different story... She explained: “When I started in January 2012, the club was very tired and run down and there was no energy. People were leaving in their droves and there were constant complaints. “They key thing we did was change the team. It’s been all about having the right team in place who all had the common goal of making the club Coventry’s number one choice for health and fitness. “We brought in a fresh new team who are full of life and energy and who want to deliver the best customer service and that wow factor. “I spent a lot of time finding the right people and I think we now have the best team there has been in the club’s 13 year history. For us it’s not just about numbers – we want to make sure every member is treated as an individual.” To bring the club right up to date, there was also a lot of investment in the latest kit including Myzone and

A shop and regular promotions have helped Ceri Powell and her team to improve their offering to members. Synrgy from Life Fitness, which forms part of the club’s popular functional zone. More time has also been invested in listening to members, with the team holding member forums to gain feedback and displaying Ceri’s contact details clearly around the club so that people can come to her directly. She added: “We’ve spent time listening to members. That’s been key – we now offer lots of member interaction and welcome open feedback. “The other key thing is that members can go to the main hotel reception. The hotel duty manager is fully focused on what we are trying to achieve and can deal with any problems very quickly.”

Club’s awards recognition OVER the last few months, the club has been recognised both internally and outside the company for the improvements made. Ceri has recently been named the De Vere group’s manager of the quarter for the whole region and came runner-up for leisure manager of the year. The team has also made the finals in the leisure team of the year competition and the club is up for two National Fitness Awards. Ceri added: “When I first started, I

thought this would be the toughest challenge and it was, but I’m so proud of what me and my team have achieved. “ We can’t wait for the National Fitness Awards. It’s the first time we have entered and to be up for two categories is amazing. “I’m looking forward to 2014. I think the club is going to go from strength to strength. I’m 100 per cent confident in our product and service and that we are the number one choice in Coventry.”

Successful gym owner plans to franchise model By Christina Eccles AN independent gym has proved to be so successful since opening almost two years ago that its owner is now planning to roll out a franchise model. Since launching the first Fight Science club in Aldershot, MMA champion Nick ‘Headhunter’ Chapman has been working hard to establish the business as a core part of the local community – offering a top level service for combat athletes and providing advice on every area they need to focus on to become the best they can be. Now following the success of the club, Nick is ready to franchise the business model and has three sites already in place, which will open next year, and a business plan to push the concept even further. He explained: “It’s grown quicker than I expected. Planning was key – I spent years researching and identified a gap in the market for somewhere offering MMA and strength and conditioning as opposed to just being a gym. “Over the years, when I trained in gyms, I took note of all the things they were doing wrong and rectified them in my own club. “The quickest way for us to expand now is by franchising. I’ve managed to get the business to meet all the criteria for franchising in less than two years. What I want now is to be widespread nationally and eventually internationally.” Plans are already in place to open sites in Leeds, Walton on Thames and Winchester and Nick told Workout that great attention to detail has been

Sarah and Richard Mason.

Nick Chapman made to ensure that franchisees will uphold his high standards and maintain the success of the Fight Science brand. He added: “I chose the number one, leading franchise consultant in the UK and we have got an amazing development model with top training manuals “We’ve found a formula that works and had great support from Life Fitness and Hammer Strength. If anyone wants to own their own gym, they should contact us and we’ll make it happen.”

Grant enables husband and wife to open fitness centre A HUSBAND and wife team have launched a new fitness centre in the heart of a North Lancashire village after securing a sought after government grant to help fund the build. Richard Mason Fitness – owned by Richard Mason and wife Sarah – provides two fitness studios: the first for one-to-one personal training and a second studio for exercise classes such as indoor cycling, fitness for the over-60s and total body workout. Sarah said: “We beat off strong competition to win a grant from The

European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. “The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, as the managing authority, could see that this business will have a substantial, beneficial impact on people living in rural North Lancashire. “They also liked the fact that this is something really different.” The grant for the business, based in Nether Kellet, totalled £28,000 and comprised half of the rebuilding costs.

Brand set for launch Fund raisers Linda Crofts, Beverley Martin, Jill Goddard, Judy Robinson and Alex Heritage.

Coffee morning helps charity STAFF at Bannatynes gym in Barnsley made sure their recent Macmillan coffee morning was extra special by auctioning off some top prizes to raise an impressive £1,604 for the cancer charity. Cafe bar receptionist Linda Crofts used her contacts with sporting stars to put together an impressive range of items, which included a Northern Ireland football team shirt – signed by all the players – and signed football shirts from Barnsley, Rotherham, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United. There were also tickets for home games at local football clubs, a signed

Sheffield Eagles ball, magnums of champagne, designer handbags and more. All day coffees and a variety of home baked cakes and cupcakes were also on sale along with second hand books. Linda, who was helped with the organisation by Bev Martin, said: “I honestly never ever thought we would raise as much money as this and was the first time I have ever organised anything like this. “I am absolutely thrilled to bits and would like to thank everyone who helped, everyone who donated and everyone who bought something.”

A NEW gym brand, which aims to bring a premium edge to the affordable fitness market, is set to open its first club in Rotherham. The 15,000 sqft. i-motion gym is opening on Stoddard Way in Parkgate, with a £1.2m refurbishment programme currently underway to transform the premises with a refreshed décor, new changing rooms and showers, 160 pieces of state of the art Matrix equipment and a functional zone. The gym will also feature an innovative Kaleido Vision music video jukebox which will give members access to 2,000 music DVD’s from a range of genres, that are projected on a 3m x 2.5m screen and other screens around the gym. The concept has been created by former professional rugby player Gareth Evans, who said: “Having worked in the health sector for

some years following my retirement from rugby it became apparent that there was a real gap in the market for a premium, low cost gym operator that matched the quality of the more upmarket brands. “We’ve developed an offer that will have broad appeal, offers great flexibility and above all gives our customers more bangs for their bucks. Our gyms will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and feature high quality equipment, over 80 classes a week, contemporary décor and most importantly, have a commitment to offer customers with a consistently low cost monthly fee of currently £14.99 with no contract.” The business is actively looking to secure further sites across the north of England, with plans to open multiple i-motion gyms over the coming years.

The company has transformed its operations and created new internal procedures in order to achieve the standard over the past six months The ISO 14000 accreditation sets out the criteria for an environmental management system and provides assurance to company management and employees, as well as external stakeholders that environmental impact is being measured and improved Managing director Neil King said: “Achieving the ISO 14000 accreditation is a testament to the hard work of our operations team. “We hope that by working to these procedures we will be able to reduce our energy consumption across our estate of leisure centres, as well as continuing to improve our internal processes to improve our environmental management.”

Owner keeps it in the family with his latest success story By Christina Eccles BARNSLEY gym owner Les Nield has revealed his latest member success story – son Wayne who the club has helped to lose four stones. Superbodies Gym in Royston, which Les and his family have been running for the last 30 years, helped Wayne get back on track with his training and nutrition after a series of health setbacks left him out of shape and keen to do something to improve his fitness. Wayne, who now works as a sales rep for Coca Cola Enterprises, explained: “The gym has always been a big part of my life. I used to be into training years ago and competed as a junior but it dropped off when I got into my 30s. “About three years ago I had a lot of health issues and put on about three and a half stones. But it got to 2012 and I thought I needed to get back in shape and into the gym. “It took about 16 months, but I sorted my diet out and from my heaviest at 15 stones 4lb, I got down to 11 stones 4lb.” Les, who told Workout he has seen many changes in his own club and the fitness industry as a whole since opening up in the 1980s, is also achieving success with some of his other members who are looking to

Staff member Mel Schofield with Wayne Nield and gym owner Les Nield. compete next year, and said he’s pleased the business is still going strong after all these years. He added: “There’s always been a good atmosphere and rapport with the customers. “We like them to feel comfortable and happy when they are here and

we’ve got some members who have been with us since the start. “Over the years, it’s been beneficial for me having bought the building. The first few years were hard paying off the mortgage, but I was always confident it would work and that I’d be able to keep it going.”

Advertiser’s announcement

FitQuest launches new fitness measurement concept at LIW AT LIW 2013 a new concept in fitness measurement was launched, based on sports science and using advanced measurement technology. Called FitQuest, this powerful and accurate motivational instrument comes from the well-established research and development organisation, MIE Medical Research Ltd. Specialists in creating quality measurement instruments for medical and sports use, MIE research engineers have developed this sophisticated measurement device so that anyone undertaking a fitness programme can check their progress in just a few minutes and compare their results week on week. By stepping onto the FitQuest machine, members can assess the effectiveness of their training programme in under three minutes. It measures human performance over seven parameters: upper body strength, upper body endurance, cardiovascular strength, leg strength, leg endurance, leg speed, explosive power and balance. It then provides an overall fitness assessment. Results are stored in the machine but are easily downloadable, enabling users to track their progress and compare results at a time that suits them,

whether that’s in the gym, at home or on the move. FitQuest can be used as a benchmark when starting a new fitness programme as well as a motivational tool to encourage members to push themselves harder during training. Training staff can also access results and devise a programme to suit each individual user, depending on their fitness needs. Incredibly simple to use, FitQuest incorporates an advanced measurement platform with a customised, user-friendly

touch screen and computer interface that's runs MIE’s unique algorithms. It does not require specialist instruction so you don’t need to invest in product training or pull members of staff from the gym floor to demonstrate to members how to use it. When stepping onto the platform the machine asks the user to input some basic data. It then guides them through the four simple exercises and provides them with an overview of their fitness levels in less than three minutes. FitQuest

can enhance your business. Whether that’s offering it as an additional service on premium offerings, charging a set fee to all members that use it, or as a way of encouraging members to pay for additional one-to-one personal training sessions. Not only will it improve member retention but it will also motivate existing members and help entice new ones into your club. How to make more profit with less cost for your club By Dave Wright THERE are only three ways to make more profit for your health club: Increase the amount of members. Increase your prices. And/or Increase your yield per member. Now if we were to ignore increasing your membership base or increasing your prices, then the cheapest and easiest way to do this is by increasing your yield per member ie. How much money a member pays to you in their membership life at your club. So although you may be thinking about selling more PT or protein supplements (which is important), in my opinion, the easier way is to earn from existing members by simply increasing how long that those members stay with you. And that is important. You see, not only is it seven times more expensive to gain a new member rather than keeping an old one, but a loyal member will also tell more friends for referrals the longer that they stay with you. Bearing that in mind, we typically lose 50 per cent of all our members every year. That means that if you start today with 1,000 members, then you will lose 500 of those by the end of the year which will mean that you will need to attack 500 new members

to get you back to the same membership number that you were at the start of the year. Sounds weird doesn’t it? If your membership fee is £25 per month and want to get an extra 3 months out of those cancelling 500 members then that adds an extra £37,500 to your bottom line profit. What’s even more interesting is that IHRSA (International, Health, Racquet and Sports Association) have actually performed studies that suggest that if you have a member that uses your club greater than 100 times per year versus someone that uses your club less than 50 times per year they will actually stay on average 18 months longer. So reverting back to our example, if those 500 cancelling members stayed an extra 18 months you would earn an extra £225,000 over an 18 month period! Now of course this doesn’t take into account those circumstances of relocation etc. but the key question is to ask yourself and your team how you can get your members to use your club at least twice per week... If you do that, then you will have less cancellations, retain more members, receive more referrals and ultimately make more profit for your health club. Dave Wright is the CEO of CFM

Theclub goes green The third National Fitness Day has been billed as the most successful yet, with an estimated 30,000 plus people taking part. On Friday 27 September, thousands got involved in the event and many took part in an ‘empower half hour’ of physical activity at 1pm. Official partners included the énergie Group, Sanofi, Change4Life and UKActive and funds raised through events on the day were donated to the Teenage Cancer Trust. Fitness Model Louise Glover is pictured on National Fitness Day on the South Bank.

Retention expert releases new book RETENTION expert Guy Griffiths has released a new book – aimed at gym owners who want to keep members motivated and maximise revenue. Stick Around (Strategies to keep your gym members motivated and maximise member revenue) sets out the three cornerstones of good member retention policies; people, communication and systems. The first half of the book runs

through the full member journey from start to finish. Each journey stage is accompanied by easy to understand diagrams and flowcharts, as well as real-life examples and case-studies to illustrate the key points. The journey also continues after the member leaves, showing how to use your ex-member database as a prospect tool.

AN independent gym in North Somerset has shown its green credentials by becoming the first site to install the full ARTIS line from Technogym, complete with Renew energy saving technology. Following a £600,000 investment, Theclub at Cadbury House in Congresbury has installed 42 new pieces of equipment across the ARTIS cardio, strength and functional collection. The Renew function – available on the ARTIS cardio range, with the exception of ARTIS Run – means the equipment harnesses human energy and feeds it directly into the facility’s grid power system, significantly reducing the cost of running a fitness centre and helping the environment. The kit also gives users the oppor-

tunity to track the energy value they generate as they workout. “The touchscreen records the watts produced and visualises a household appliance – such as a kettle or light bulb – that uses the equivalent power value. General manager Jason Eaton said: “We are excited to offer our members the very latest in fitness technology through this partnership with Technogym. “Not only does the new kit look great, it is ergonomically designed to maximise the training experience and will provide our members with the optimum workout. “Moreover we are leveraging human movement to offset the level of energy needed to power the club which is great for the environment.”

Independent gym celebrates 20th birthday with offer By Christina Eccles

Grandmother Rosie Stewart has been crowned David Lloyd Leisure’s PT Hero of the Year 2013. Rosie, 67, who joined David Lloyd Belfast earlier this year, was voted for by Facebook fans of the operator and was awarded the title of Young at Heart. She saw off competition from five other finalists for the people’s vote to win a year’s complimentary membership at her club. David Lloyd Leisure’s head of sports, health and fitness, Rob Beale said: “We are delighted to announce Rosie as our PT Hero of the Year. She is living proof that it’s never too late to start exercising and keep healthy, and that with the motivation and support of our personal trainers, you can achieve amazing results.”

A LONG standing independent gym in Swansea is celebrating its 20th birthday with a special offer for new members – and a renewed commitment to looking after its loyal ones. The Fitness Studio was one of the first clubs in the area to open and over the years has changed from a small gym with two rooms – one for cardio and the other for weights – to a much larger scale club. Current facilities include the main gym area complete with over 1,000 pieces of equipment; a dedicated cardio room; free weights gym; dedicated ladies only gym and a sauna and steam room, with the gym also tapping into the latest kit and trends such as bootcamps, Power Plate and TRX. The club has about 1,500 regular members of all ages, including one customer who has recently celebrated their 80th birthday and has been with the gym since it opened. Manager Dawn Bishop said: “We have a broad age range of members and they have become more like family and friends than customers.” To celebrate its birthday, The Fitness Studio has launched a special offer where new members can join for £27.50 per month and benefit from

The Fitness Studio in Swansea. free sunbed sessions and free personal training or unlimited access to fitness classes. And Dawn added that the mix of people who now come into the club creates a great atmosphere for those who train there. She added: “Years ago ladies would do the classes and men would go in the gym. Now there are more men going to classes and you see more women in the gym. “We also introduced a ladies only gym about 15 years ago, which we have found has been a good way of

introducing people into the gym who are new to fitness. Looking to the future, Dawn told Workout that as well as attracting new members, the club’s focus will continue to be on looking after and retaining their existing ones. She added: “Our success has been down to hard work and long hours and always keeping ahead of the game. We now want to keep making sure our existing members are happy and look after them and hopefully expand with a few more in the New Year.”

Gym instructor and members complete charity cycle ride A GYM fitness instructor and two of his members have completed an epic 660-mile, eight day cycle ride – together raising £4,000 for Macmillan Nurses and the Stroke Association. Freedom Leisure fitness instructor Kevin Balsdon – along with Min Peterken and Jo Davies – who attend his classes at Uckfield and Hailsham leisure centres respectively, took on the challenge, with Kevin and Jo cycling the entire distance from London to Geneva, via Paris, and Min accompanying them as far as Paris before returning home. Kevin, who is in remission from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma after completing an intense chemotherapy programme three years ago, initially joined the Freedom Leisure Hailsham Leisure Centre in January 2011 in a bid to regain his fitness after his can-

cer treatment. He went on to train at Freedom Leisure to be a fitness instructor and now teaches group cycling, step classes and Body Pump at the Uckfield, Hailsham and Summerfields centres. Freedom Leisure centre manager at Uckfield Leisure Centre Stuart Crawford said: “Kevin is an inspirational member and colleague and I applaud his determination and courage to undertake this daunting cycle ride for the charities who helped him. “Not only has he regained very good health, he is now sharing his passion for fitness with our members across three sites. “Their achievement is remarkable in terms of the money raised and their fitness demonstrated to complete the challenge.”

Funding boost for annual schools’ sports project By Christina Eccles A SUCCESSFUL project which provides local school children with the opportunity to enjoy activities at Aberdeen Sports Village has secured funding to run annually through to 2018. The Saltire Sports for Schools Project, launched by Mike Loggie, CEO of Saltire Energy in 2009, is supported by Aberdeen Sports Village and the University of Aberdeen and has run annually at ASV since its launch. Saltire Energy has financially supported the scheme to date, so far having contributed £500,000 to the project, with this figure likely to rise year on year by approximately £50,000 to enable it to continue running. Since it started four years ago, the scheme has enabled about 2,000 children from five local primary schools to develop their sporting and interpersonal skills at Aberdeen Sports Village ’s state-of-

the-art sporting environment. Chief executive of Aberdeen Sports Village David Beattie said: “Helping the community is such a key focus for ASV that we are thrilled the project is running for the fourth consecutive year. “Year on year, the scheme has become bigger and better. Those involved really enjoy the activities and it works fantastically to help encourage participants to discover and develop their confidence and skills. “Many of the children involved have not had the opportunity to try sport of any description, this underlines just how important the project is in giving all children the chance to enjoy sporting activities of all types. “We are thrilled to be able to provide swimming as an option as part of the project – and when the new Aquatics Centre opens in early 2014, those taking part will be able to benefit from the world class centre we are currently developing.”

The Strength and Conditioning Institute offers the latest equipment, some of which is custom made, spread over two floors.

Friends open gym after spotting market gap By Christina Eccles TWO friends from Kent have opened their own dedicated strength and conditioning gym, which is offering something new to people in Tonbridge. National level strength coaches Alex Shoebridge and Martin Shyvers set up the Strength and Conditioning Institute in January this year after spotting a gap in the market for a facility which focused on this type of training. The gym is spread over two floors and offers the latest equipment – some of which is custom made for the club – and Martin and Alex’s spe-

cialist knowledge to help clients reach their goals. Alex explained: “Everybody in our gym has a programme which either Martin or I have written for them and before this, I’ve never worked in a club where I’m happy to say that 100 per cent of the clients are progressing. It’s really exciting and we have some members who have made fantastic progress.” One of the club’s most successful projects has been its eight week intensive transformation programme, Engineering The Super You, and plans are in the pipeline to introduce more similar projects, including

online coaching sessions via the club’s website and a mobile app so people can access training from wherever they are. Alex added: “We specialise in conditioning and there is nowhere within a 35 to 40 mile radius which does what we do. Our expertise and equipment sets us apart. There are only us two that work here – but people like that consistency.” Membership is currently around 180 but the pair plan to cap it at about 250 people to ensure that everyone can benefit from their personal levels of service. And things are going so well, the

idea of opening more clubs has already been talked about for the future. Alex added: “From about the age of 16, I wanted to open my own gym and that was the ultimate goal. I’ve managed to get there at the age of 27 but we always said we didn’t want to do a one off. We want to be a brand and have started to build up a strong reputation.” Have you recently opened a gym? Let us know how it’s going and you could appear in a future issue of Workout. Send details to ce@scriptmedia.co.uk or contact us via Facebook or Twitter.

Power Plate set to target health and wellbeing market By Christina Eccles A TWO-fold focus is the target for Power Plate over the coming months, with the brand looking to integrate further into the health and wellbeing market, while also protecting its strong position in the fitness industry. Power Plate, which has been taken on by Performance Health Systems, is already a well known name in fitness but is now looking to build on that success and show what the product can do in other markets and industries such as the care and rehabilitation sectors. Senior vice president of Performance Health Systems Matt Pengelly explained: “What we are aiming to do is become the global leader in health and wellness through advanced technology solutions. “Power Plate in the UK has been known as a fitness company and has been very successful in the consumer and commercial fitness markets. “Our business strategy is now two fold; we want to protect what we have already and also want to grow our business into the health and wellness market.” One of the key areas the company is looking to move into is the care home sector and working with operators to see how using the Power Plate can help improve the health of their residents. Matt added: “For us it’s about Functional, Independence Measure. FIM scores analyse independence when we are assessing care and we are looking at how vibration training can help increase these scores and the quality of care. “The perception about Power Plate is that it’s used for weight loss but it’s so much more.

Surrey Sports Park has launched a dedicated project to help three of its members train like professional athletes. From over 100 applications, three members were chosen to be put through their paces and train alongside a specialist team for 12 weeks. Over the coming months, Surrey Sports Park and its onsite Surrey Human Performance lab will test, train and mentor Josh, Susie and Stephanie to help achieve their goals and maintain a healthier lifestyle. A team consisting of a dietician, personal trainers, strength and conditioning coaches and sports scientist will design bespoke training plans based on the outcomes of physiological testing. The trio will be documenting their journeys via the Surrey Sports Park website and on Twitter.

Matt Pengelly “We are doing a lot of research and studies globally looking at what whole body vibration can do in other markets.” The brand is also celebrating the success of its latest model the pro7, which has been well received in the fitness industry by operators who have upgraded to include it in their clubs. Matt added: “The problem we had with the pro5 was that if some instructors didn’t embrace the product, it was difficult for members to know what to do with them on their own. “The pro7 incorporates video and the three concepts of look better, feel better, play better and there are specific programmes which show technique. It’s been an absolutely massive hit and from some of the statistics we have got from clubs which have upgraded to pro7 from pro5, usage has increased massively.”

New club follows success of concept in Finland A NEW ladies’ only health club has opened in Colchester, following the success of the concept in Finland. The Livia Club, located in Global House, is aiming to offer women in the area something different with its use of HUR resistance equipment and pioneering SmartCard technology. The HUR equipment works with the SmartCard technology to manage training programmes and provide feedback, with in-built automatic programme updating ensuring members stay motivated and keep track of their progress. There are already Livia Clubs open in Finland and co-owners Mats Manderbacka and Norman Smith are looking forward to bringing the concept to the UK. Norman, who is also managing director of HUR UK, said: “Mats has

The Livia Club in Colchester. developed the Livia Club concept and SmartCard technology from extensive research into the effectiveness of strength and endurance training and members of other Livia Clubs have had fantastic results. “We’re excited about the opening of Livia Club in Colchester and are inviting the women of Colchester and Essex to take part in a free trial to find out more about the equipment and technology.”

The club runs 12 sessions a week, which are nearly all full, and has seen Spinning grow in popularity over the last few months, thanks to investment in new equipment and some innovative ideas. Manager Scott Bryce said: “Our Spinning sessions have really taken off within the last 18 months and this can be down to upgrading our

Star Trac spinning bikes, upgrading of the Spinning room to include themed cycling wall, fantastic instructors that engage our customers to give the full cycling experience, session layout and flexibility along with having regular themed rides. “We have a wide variety of customers taking part and a particular class on a Thursday morning has a back row of customers that if you add their ages together it regularly exceeds 1,000 years.”

A reliable mainstay of the fitness industry

CONCEPT2 has long been one of the most reliable mainstays of the fitness industry, something attested to by the ranks of rowing machines in gyms up and down the country. Despite this, there have been some big changes at the company over the last couple of months, as Concept2 Ltd in the UK has recently become a fully owned subsidiary of Concept2

Inc., the US manufacturers. The new managing director in the UK Alex Dunne said: “We’ve still got a lot of the same staff, so customers can expect the same great service they’ve been used to. “For most people, the main thing they should notice initially is the price. Now that we’re directly owned, we’ve been able to lower the cost sig-

nificantly to the end user.” The price of a Model D Indoor Rower with PM3 has dropped by £120 to £860 including VAT and delivery, while the Model E, aimed more at the fitness market, is now just £1200. Neil creates Velocity Program to improve standard of instructors AFTER 17 years of instructing, Neil Troutman created the Velocity Indoor Cycling Program to improve the standard of instructors in the market place. He explained: “I feel I have created it at the right time with the ever increasing growth of boutique indoor cycling studios. “I have been working closely with some, such as Good Vibes studio in Fitzrovia and Ride Studio in Cobham. This month Joyriders opened in Weybridge and Spinn-off London is opening soon. But studios are opening much further afield like in Market Deeping in Peterborough and achieving great success. “It is essential that these studios

employ the best instructors in the market place and make sure they have the knowledge to teach true and keep the class engaging and motivational. With this increase in competition it is important that all companies look at raising their instructional and studio standards. “Off the bike I have been working with Lebert Fitness and looking to launch their leBarre program in the UK and continue the growth of that brand with the distributing company FitQuote. “I am excited as well by the Flipper from Staffsfitness which has just successfully gained REPs accreditation. Proper training is the key to successful implementation.”

Wattbike add new testing features

Group X Systems has launched a new indoor cycling class, designed to get participants fitter in just 30 minutes. The R30 class is suitable for both beginners and established riders, with each session geared towards burning calories, improving muscular endurance and building cardio fitness.

INNOVATIVE indoor cycling brand Wattbike has added several new features to enhance the user experience. The Wattbike Performance Computer now enables personal trainers and coaches to easily and accurately undertake a range of industry-standard testing protocols. At the conclusion of each testing session, a summary of results is displayed in an easy-to-read format on the Wattbike Performance Computer, allowing the coach to deliver instant feedback to the client. The bikes now also have enhanced connectivity, which allows operators to wirelessly connect any number of Wattbikes together in an indoor group cycling session. Utilising Wattbike’s Power Cycling software, operators can deliver instant individual feedback on a large screen in a group environment.

Equinox introduces new rowing class INNOVATIVE London club Equinox has introduced a new indoor rowing class. Developed by elite rowing champion Josh Crosby and premier fitness educator Jay Blahnik, Shockwave is a new circuit-based class using the WaterRower machine to provide short bursts of high calorie-burning inter-

vals, alongside functional strength and sculpting stations. Designed to target the legs, core and arms, Shockwave participants are encouraged to put their competitive streak into action. The rowing station is an essential part of the circuit, utilising the IndoRow rower by WaterRower, and the

other stations can be created by using equipment a gym already has. Josh said: “Members will find themselves enjoying plenty of benefits from Shockwave, including improved muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular power, and better balance, coordination, agility and flexibility.”

The Metrodome Leisure Complex in Barnsley has opened a new Myride+ studio and will be running instructor led and interactive classes.

Award winning gym opens new cycling studio By Christina Eccles AN award winning South Yorkshire gym has opened a new indoor cycling studio – and is hoping to capitalise on the arrival of one of the world’s biggest sporting events to the local area. The Grand Depart of the Tour de France will take place in Yorkshire next summer, putting the spotlight firmly on cycling. After already noticing an increase in demand for indoor

cycling, the Metrodome Leisure Complex in Barnsley has opened a new Myride+ studio, allowing them to better cater for members who already enjoy this type of class and offer something different to attract those who may never have tried a session. The club, which is planning on holding an official studio opening attended by players from Barnsley Football Club, believes it is the first local authority trust in the country to install the state of the art IC3 cycles.

It will be running instructor led and interactive classes, ranging from 20 minutes to 60 minutes in length and of varying difficulties, which will be free for members. Facility manager Joni Millthorpe said: “Indoor cycling has always been popular and we knew we had to invest to keep up with the demand, particularly with the timing of the Tour de France. “We think the studio will add value for members and we are now looking

to get the word out to them, as well as holding training sessions with the local football club.” Last year, The Metrodome – which is operated by Barnsley Premier Leisure – took home a National Fitness Award for Best Local Authority/Leisure Trust facility and is hoping to retain its title after being shortlisted again this year. The team will find out if they have been successful at a glittering awards ceremony in Manchester on December 6.

Instructor apprenticeship turns Joshua’s life around JOSHUA Denney from Sheffield believes his Government-funded Apprenticeship turned his life around… Joshua’s parents divorced when he was eight years old, and two years later he moved to Sardinia with his mother and new stepfather. However, growing up in Sardinia wasn’t easy. Aged just 13, Joshua left home and lived rough on the streets until he was eventually put into a foster home and given counselling. Three years ago he returned to England to live with his grandparents and re-established his relationship with his real dad, an ex-professional boxer. However, with no qualifications and suffering from depression, he had no idea what to do with his life. He said: “The government-funded Fitness Instructor qualification with Lifetime was a complete lifeline for me, it provided me with a strong pathway from classroom-based learning to practical hands on learning in the workplace. “My Lifetime regional trainer, Herbie Jassi, and my regional employment officer, Joel Senior, really helped to inspire and motivate me. I really enjoyed the work experience aspect of the programme at the Sheffield Dragons Academy.” The manager at the Sheffield Dragons Academy was so impressed with Joshua that they offered him a full time job and since then he has

REFURBISHMENT

Redevelopment includes a new fitness suite By Christina Eccles

GYMetrix has worked with Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council at two sites.

GYMetrix helps gyms to boost membership TWO local authority gyms have seen dramatic increases in membership revenue after a study helped them identify key areas in which they could improve. Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council appointed GYMetrix – a system which monitors usage of equipment and interviews members – before embarking on the expansion and upgrade of its gyms at Larkfield and Angel Leisure Centres. The initial GYMetrix study at Larkfield gym identified shortages in key equipment including treadmills and ellipticals, which was a cause of major dissatisfaction among customers. Male members were particularly frustrated by overcrowding in the free weights area, while the study also found that other kit was being severely under utilised so of little value to customers. Following recommendations by GYMetrix, the council invested in more treadmills and ellipticals, and significantly expanded the free weights sections as part of the refurbishment of the gym. It also removed some of the less popular equipment. Six months later and membership

levels have increased by 18 per cent at Larkfield and 21 per cent at Angel Centre with both seeing big improvements in customer satisfaction scores, particularly among male members. There has also been a 75 per cent increase in demand for the new free weights equipment at both sites. Leisure contracts manager at Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council and chairman of South East Leisure Centre Operators Martin Guyton said: “I’ve been in the industry for over 30 years and it’s rare to discover a product that is not only truly innovative but fully developed. “Colleagues who are planning significant investment in fitness equipment should contemplate their current process of building their specification. “I have yet to find anyone who convinces me that they have a method based on fact rather than supposition. GYMetrix offers this alternative and the initial small investment will be recouped through the process of purchasing and many times over on future bottom line performance, by providing your customer base with the range of equipment they actually want.”

A MAJOR redevelopment programme has been completed at One Leisure St Ives, which includes a brand new Impressions Fitness Suite. The project also included the creation of a specific functional training area, which features the biggest ever Escape Octagon, and has helped the club achieve some impressive results. Impressions’ fitness consultant and personal trainer Ollie Ritch explained: “In the first four months since the new functional training area was installed, we have achieved 80 per cent of our entire PT business from last year.” The investment is reaping rewards for members too who are enjoying a bigger range of workout options. Wellbeing manager at One Leisure Rebecca Goode added: “The Escape Octagon is a fantastic piece of kit which allows maximum use of space with effective storage. “It is also aesthetically pleasing and excites members visually and motivates their training. The classes being delivered in the functional area are fully booked, with people wanting to

pre-book to ensure they get a space.” The club now also deliver Ushomi’s Move It programme to their members – a 12 month group training programme to keep them engaged and motivated and allow them to constantly develop and improve. Ollie added: “The Move It training programmes are important because people see a class going on and it makes them want to get involved. A Move It circuit class is manageable for everyone.” They also have access to Ushomi On-Line, a resource that helps to support their instructors with 1000s of online video clips and ideas for new workouts along with free accredited CPD seminars and much more. Director of education at Ushomi Tommy Matthews added: “Impressions at One Leisure has launched a really exciting functional group training area in their club and it's working very well for them. “They have a group of passionate trainers who clearly understand the benefits of this style of training and they have engaged their members instantly, running Move It sessions all week.”

How does your functional space help you stand out? By Mark Laws UNLESS you have been living under a rock for the last few years you will be fully aware that the industry has undergone a huge transition. Row upon row of two-dimensional isolation machines targeting each individual muscle are (thankfully) becoming a thing of the past. No longer do you need an entire sheet of A4 just to write your training programme. Gone are the days of having to take an afternoon off work to fit each machine in before bed time. Nowadays, you need a ‘functional’ area where members can perform exaggerated ‘natural’ human movements. So, by getting a functional area all of your problems will be solved, right? Wrong, because everyone has got one. Every major gym chain is sitting comfortably upon the functional fitness bandwagon, and there are more independent facilities popping up than ever before – in spite of the fact that we are seeing the worst economic situation for decades. Not to mention the thousands of personal trainers who work from the boot of their cars meaning they save on their overheads, but still provide a great service without the client needing a gym membership. Your functional space needs to stand out more than ever. In order to

make that happen, there are two really simple and obvious things it needs. Indeed, so simple that you will kick yourself if you haven’t guessed them. Your functional space needs to be a) FUNCTIONAL, and it needs plenty of b) SPACE. The key to achieving both of these things is having a creative, innovative team, and a well planned lay-out. In my personal opinion you want to have as much floor space as possible. This allows numerous PTs to be seen using the space at once and, gives you the option of teaching group fitness classes and group PT sessions. Plus, the more space there is, the bigger the range of exercises you can introduce. In order to get the most space, you need to be clever with the equipment you have and the way you position and store everything. Get rid of a few treadmills if you have to. Get rid of a lot of treadmills ideally. The more people utilising your functional space the better. The more different things they can do, the more they will enjoy the experience...and the more friends and family they are likely to recommend to your facility. Finally, never underestimate the importance of creativity. Functional equipment is fun compared to using machines, but the novelty can soon wear off if it's too repetitive. You must have access to dozens of exercises for each piece of kit, always

Dal finds her niche with an alternative membership model A MEMBERSHIP model where clients pay for personal training and can then use the club facilities for free between sessions is working well for a studio owner in Coventry. Members at Body Perfect Personal Training can choose from three packages – silver, gold and platinum – depending on how many training sessions they want each month. Silver gives them two sessions, gold four and platinum eight, with each package also including a full assessment, personalised training programme and use of the studio. The studio, which opened nearly three years ago, originally offered private personal training sessions for both men and women, but by changing the model slightly to make it a ladies only business and allowing clients access to use the facilities in between sessions, owner Dal Dhaliwal has managed to find her niche. She explained: “At first the business was mixed for men and women, but I decided to make it just for ladies about eight months ago. I found when I was doing personal training, it was working really well, but I wanted to offer an opportunity for them to use

the facilities on a complimentary basis inbetween. “There’s no other studio nearby which just trains women and the ladies are really loving it.” Numbers have been kept quite small, at about 30 members, so that the studio never feels crowded and each person can benefit from a personal service. And Dal, who is the UK’s first Indian female health and fitness coach to launch a private fitness studio for women, told Workout she is really enjoying having the business – and would like to open more studios in future. She added: “We’ve got a really nice atmosphere and a community feel and I work hard to keep the studio looking really good, which I think is important. Everyone who comes in here is very different and from all sorts of cultural backgrounds. And I love helping as many women as I can. “The membership and personal training model is definitely working for me. In future, I’m hoping to open something London way and maybe explore India and get the message across there.”

He won Club Manager of the Year in the award from Leisure Jobs UK, and in March will be sunning himself as part of the prize – a holiday in San Diego. Lifestyle Fitness in Barnsley opened just 15 months ago and has 4,200 members who use the gym and can pick and choose from 50 fitness classes. Members are aged 16 to 55 but two are in their late 80s. Shane, who was previously in the Army and then a sales manager for DW Sports, has been promoted to regional manager and, as well as Barnsley, will be looking after 10 clubs across his employer's Midlands East

area from Skegness to Middlesbrough and Darlington. He said: “It was a great honour to win the Leisure Jobs award. I was up against people who had been running clubs for seven or eight years. The winner was judged on several different criteria like generating members and income.” Shane is reflecting the success of national chain Lifestyle Fitness which has 54 clubs across the country and plans to open another 20 in the next eight months. The Barnsley club is also sponsoring the Barnsley Chronicle’s Proud of Barnsley awards in the Sports Team of the Year category. Shane added: “We are developing the Barnsley club by working on our offer for the over 55s and creating a cafe bar. “We've also bought the car park at Gateway Plaza to make parking easier for members.”

Ricky Hatton cuts the ribbon on the refurbished Failsworth Sports Centre.

Hitman opens new centre BOXING legend Ricky Hatton has officially opened the new facilities at Failsworth Sports Centre following an impressive refurbishment project. Oldham Council and Oldham Community Leisure have invested almost £1m into the centre, which has seen extensive development including the installation of a new 60 plus station gym and a dedicated teen only gym. The whole site has also benefited from the installation of a new heating and area circulation system, refreshment lounge, refurbished swimming pool area and new changing rooms with new flooring, cubicles, shower rooms and improved locker facilities. Ricky said: “When I was a lad there was an abundance of youth clubs and I used to spend my time in Hyde Lads Club.

“There aren’t many of these facilities around anymore, but there is a fantastic one right here in Failsworth. “If they have facilities like this in every town it would benefit the schools, young people and the communities. Chief executive of Oldham Community Leisure Stuart Lockwood added: “As part of a recent Leisure Estate review in Oldham and upgrades in other facilities around the Borough, we didn’t want Failsworth Sports Centre to be left behind. “The centre has always been at the heart of the adjacent Failsworth School and the community – so with this vital investment, alongside the co-operative working with Oldham Council, it has provided an area with a well-deserved ultra-modern facility for everyone to enjoy.”

Devices give a useful insight A HEALTH club in Leicester has gained useful insight from its members after using Customer First Solution Europe’s hand held devices to gather feedback. Over 160 people have given their thoughts so far on Reeds Health Club and Spa and focused improvements from the responses have included upgrading the lighting in the ladies’ changing room and increasing the number of cleaning staff. Manager Neil Hawksworth said:

“CFS has given us a real insight into the services and experience we deliver to our customers. “We’ve been able to use customer comments to shape and improve the level of service we offer. “Although some of the responses are as expected there have been instances where comments have really surprised us as a team. These have been key to helping me to forge a strong sense of customer loyalty and ensure repeat visits.”

TreadClimber installed at club LONDON club Fitness First Devonshire Square has installed the first TreadClimber by Star Trac machines in the UK. The club installed two machines in September, which have already proven to be a hit with members. Head of Fitness at Fitness First

Lee Matthews said: “Our members love the new addition to our cardio offering. “The TreadClimber by Star Trac is a great innovative product and gives our members a different option to the traditional treadmill or elliptical workout.”

City Athletic lets members train like an athlete LONDON based club City Athletic offers members the chance to work out like an athlete during their lunch hour. Pro-cricketer Ben Claypole and WBFF World Champion Shaun Stafford worked together for over 15 years as personal trainers at a large gym chain. Shared frustrations lead to their dream of creating a medium-sized gym that bridged the gap between PT studios and super gyms, this became a reality and City Athletic was founded. All 11 staff at City Athletic (including receptionists) are fully qualified, bestin-class personal trainers, qualified in a range of different specialisms including strength and conditioning and posture correction and rehabilitation, so all members are given a

bespoke, individual service. The space is deliberately spacious and open plan with nowhere to hide, so the staff can identify any users who may need assistance. The gym boasts the very latest Life Fitness equipment including the Engage Cardiovascular series, Hammer Strength HD Elite, custom built power racks and lifting platforms, a full complement of fixed and free weights, plus unique features such as a two lane sprint track. Members have the choice of training in three ways; one to one bespoke PT session, individual training or ‘semiprivate’ group sessions. In addition, they create 30 – 45 minute ‘workout of the day’ programmes to keep things fresh. For more information visit www.lifefitness.co.uk

Is ‘locker hogging’ a common problem at your fitness facility? MEMBERS of The Fitness Society in Berkhampsted were becoming increasingly frustrated with the apparent lack of locker space. General manager and co-owner Ben Stacey explained: “We were getting regular complaints from members about not having enough lockers, even when the gym was quiet 70-80 per cent of the lockers were locked. “But when we looked into the problem, it wasn’t because there were not enough, it was because people were keeping the locker keys and using the lockers as their own, and we simply didn’t have enough lockers for members to reserve them for their personal use.” The Fitness Society decided to resolve the situation by removing all the coin and key-operated locks and replacing them with keyless locks instead. KitLock 1200 is a durable electronic lock designed specifically for securing lockers. Fitted in place of a standard cam lock, it provides simple keypad access

without the hassle of keys, coins or tokens. Instead, access is gained by entering a four-digit code on the keypad. Members simply enter a user code, then ‘lock and go’. To ensure enough lockers were available for members to use, The Fitness Society programmed the locks to automatically open after four hours. Ben added: “We wanted to implement a system that would be fair and benefit everyone. “With KitLock we are able to control access to the lockers much more easily. Restricting the lock time to four hours gives our members more than enough time to have a workout, use the sauna or sunbed, shower, and then enjoy a coffee and a chat. “If there are lockers still in use at the end of the day, we can access them using a technician code. Now there is always availability and we can clean the lockers on a regular basis.” To read the full case study visit: http://www.kitlock.com/kl/case_studies or call Codelocks on 01635 239645.
