Looking inwards to

mould better adults for the future

.

An interview with Lee Duru.

A modern, globalized world demands people to focus on their careers and personal aspirations over things that fall outside the workplace. From overtime shortening those precious moments at dinnertime, to lengthy work trips that lead to missed sports matches, being a parent in modern South Africa is an artful juggle of time, money, and priorities to say the least. This lifestyle may require clarity on the things that motivate you to get up in the,

morning, as all these demands need fuel to keep the midnight oil burning strong, while ensuring you never lose focus on what is important. Sometimes, seeking out the advice and experiences of other parents in busy roles can provide sharp focus to calm the storms of modern life, especially in a dynamic country such as ours.

Lee Duru is one such parent who provides insight into parenting as a modern professional. In our interview, she went beyond the expected ten steps to 21st century parenting, as her more personal reflections expressed how parenting not only shapes the values of our children, but those of our nation as well.

The Konvemient Magazine 3
"If one is to fix society, one needs to mould better adults.”

Immensely mindful and greatly enthusiastic about raising her daughter, Elah, with her husband Lesogo, Lee explains that the source of one ’ s effort goes beyond serving the basic needs of the household. The outcome of parenting can affect one ’ s community, so the drive and success of a modern parent ventures far beyond meals and school pickups.

“Parenting is a huge responsibility. But it is not only a responsibility to the kid, but a responsibility to society at large. The person shaped at home can impact others either positively or negatively, and it is our job as parents to ensure that we reflect on our own actions, experiences and traumas, to ensure our children become well-rounded, healthy citizens of South Africa.”

This was a constant theme of Lee’s thoughts on modern parenting, as she touched on the wonders of involving one ’ s children in our exciting career moments - exposing children to the world beyond life at home. Considering how difficult it may be to grasp modern parenting, it was an absolute pleasure to hear Lee’s own parenting experiences and reflections, and how her daughter guides, heals and inspires her to do more for her family and greater community.

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us. I hope the slow transition out of lockdown hasn’t affected your professional and personal life too greatly. In fact, how do you remain motivated and focused on your goals as a performer, radio personality, public figure, and a full-time mother, considering all that has happened over the past two years? "As anyone can attest, the uncertainty was nerve-wracking. Luckily though, radio continued right through and so, thankfully, I managed to stay involved in all that was happening, aside from remaining employed. Admittedly, it was challenging to channel positivity and to entertain as per our broadcasting mandate during this time. But what motivated me was the impact we had on our listeners. A lot of people were experiencing devastation all round in terms of job loss, death of family members etc. and they relied on us as presenters to carry them through - particularly during the hard lock down. The accessibility and warmth of radio connects with so many, and the feedback received from listeners was so touching and heart-warming in a time of great uncertainty.

Launching her own water brand early May, is the wonderful and young boss lady by the name of Tshephang K Molapo - a 21 year old who grew up in a small village called Maandagshoek in Burgersfort, Limpopo. One of her wise moves was to leave Johannesburg last year April back to her hometown to avoid paying rent and start funding her dream. In a chat with her about which brand is her favourite currently in Mzansi she shared that Drip is her favourite brand, “because it has been able to motivate me and teach me that anything is possible, it’s not about where you come from, but about the journey and passion that makes you who you are ” .

When did you commence with your water business and what motivated you to start with it? “I registered my company back in 2019 and for a while I could not bring any of my ideas to life, but that did not stop me from trying. What motivated me is the fact that all the companies I’ve worked for were all black owned. The first company I worked for was a water brand, second company is one of the leading sneaker brands in the country and the third company is my sister’s office supplies business. These businesses motivated me in a manner that I can reach my dreams, and as a young 21-year-old black female I knew that my dreams are valid because I learned from the best”.

What makes your water brand unique and why the name? “What makes my water unique is the fact that instead of a plastic bottle my water brand is packaged in a box. But not only is it packaged in a box, but the design and colour of the box is aesthetically pleasing. We have a Ph of 6.5. My water is not just water, but it’s water with a story. The name Vanquish means to “ overcome ” , a name I came up with just after I overcame depression, and coming up with Vanquish gave me hope to keep fighting”.

Tell us about the launch in May: “We are launching the product on the first week of May. We will launch it online and for now it's not available at any retail stores, we are going to operate through online orders. People will be able to place orders via our Instagram page as we are still busy with our ecommerce system”. Which company would you be interested to collaborate with in future and why? “Currently there is no specific brand I have in mind to collaborate with. But yes, I would love to see myself working with a lot of entertainment companies”. Lastly, When not working on your brand, what do you do to keep sane? "When not working on my brand I love to keep myself busy with watching a lot of mentorship videos and meeting with people that are in the entrepreneurial business, so that I could learn to better myself”.

IT'S A MARATHON, NOT A SPRINT.

Rashid Thobega Stewart is a Johannesburg born & bred entrepreneur, in the West Rand to be precise but currently resides in Krugersdorp. The inspiration to begin with this slowly but surely penetrating the market sneaker brand was influenced by people like DJ Sbu, Thobega enjoyed and was encouraged by how “Mr Knoxman” would hit the streets and preaching Mofaya.

We initiated the engagement by trying to hear his favourite Mzansi brand besides his own and this is what he said, “My favourite Mzansi brand besides mine has to be Skinny Sbu Socks by Sibusiso Ngwenya, and this is mainly due to the resilience the founder has portrayed throughout the existence of the business”.

How do you think SA can own back the township economy? “Owning back township economy is one of the most complex conversations and a very uncomfortable issue, due to socio-economic conditions we find ourselves in, as South Africans. It gets political so without dwelling much on it, as South Africans a lot of work has to be done, though we could kick off by taking back traditional businesses which our parents used to operate, and this is your tuck shops for example”.

The brand was established in 2019, started off by introducing a formal shoe before switching to sneakers.

Have you ever been funded by any funding institution in SA? If yes, how easy or challenging was the process. If no, what would you use funding for if you could get one? “I have never been funded unfortunately; I've always managed to raise my own funds in the streets. If granted funding opportunities I would definitely upscale the business”.

What are your business highlights so far? “There’s plenty, one of them is that I've always been involved in the hustle, though I would say selling 300 pairs in three months without a brick-and-mortar store was a big flex. This reiterated the power technology and social media, how these platforms have changed the landscape of modern-day entrepreneurs, and believe me when I say, it's adding pressure to conservative old heads, because new companies are popping up everywhere, and overthrowing the old regime and gate keepers”.

Which company would you be interested to collaborate with in future and why? “I would definitely collaborate with Skinny Sbu Socks. We are both extremely outspoken, driven and relentlessly pursue our goals and aspirations. Also, what is a sneaker without a pair of good socks? We could really spark some brain, that could motivate and sell hope to the country at large”.

When not working on your brand, what do you do to keep sane? “When not working on the brand, I'm definitely having lots of coffee, listening to hip-hop music or probably reading various informative material I can get my eyes on ” .

clothing brand

Ndimnyama brand is the brainchild of both Sibahle and Simamkele Wole. These wonderful young entrepreneurs grew up in Peddie before they moved to Uitenhage in 2009. “We grew up in an environment where our mother was selling ‘Imiqolo’ to put bread on the table.

One of the brands that we very much adore is ‘Malume Playground’ because it’s a very unique business, one that introduces gaming to locals. We asked the duo what do they think should be done to bring back the kasi economy and they replied by saying, “It’s simply by supporting each and every in growing our businesses and open up to collaborations, i.e photographers should partner with clothing brands or musicians to promote one another”.

The beginning of great things.

When did you commence with your clothing apparel business and what motivated you to start? “The idea came in 2019, but at that time we didn't know which name to use for the brand. Simamkele then suggested the name NDIMNYAMA, a name that came about bringing light into a place of ‘darkness’, as we all know that literal dreams comes at night (ebumnyameni), then we had to put everything into personification of one ’ s character, and NDIMNYAMA not because I’m black but I’m also the start of great things”.

The Konvenient Magazine 13

Have you ever been funded by any funding institution in SA? If no, what would you use the funding for if you could get one? “Not yet, we have not received any funding simply because we never applied. We wanted to fund the business on our own so we can know the struggles of starting without funds.

But, If we could get funding we will increase our stock and also buy machines for sewing as we are suffering from outsourcing some of our products”.

What are your business highlights so far? ”Being nominated in #MAMA'S 2022 awards is definitely one of our biggest highlights as we enter our second year as a business".

Which company would you be interested to collaborate with in future and why? “We are keen to work with any company as Ndimnyama Brand, for as long as it would be beneficial to local economy ” .

When you're not working on your brand, what do you guys do to keep sane? “We everyday work on the strategy to improve the brand. Otherwise, if we are not busy with the brand we are doing photoshoots or busy helping with interior designing”.

Beauty By Landa Makeup

Artist

Born and bred in Gqeberha, Motherwell - Yolanda Monqo is a Bsc in Dietetics student at NMU, studying to be a professional dietitian. “I have always been cautious about what I eat and curious about human nutrition. So since in high school I was really good with math and science I thought of doing something that would merge the two into a career path, and Dietetics seemed like a perfect match and it's still going good. Now I can't wait to be qualified as I look forward to give professional nutritional advise to help people in the next few years " . When did you commence with Beauty By Landa as a makeup brand and what inspired you to start? “I started doing make up around the age of 15, just when I started doing grade 11. I wanted to look pretty in ways I've never seen myself before and I used makeup as an escape. I used to watch make up tutorials online and create looks I thought would look amazing, and that was my ' me ' time with no interruptions, and no books”, she giggled. "I officially started Beauty by Landa in my matric year, 2020 - inspired by the life I want to live and the places I want to go to, hence the start of my business, to create income stream as soon as I can ” .

The Konvenient Magazine 16

What do you love and enjoy about the makeup work and where do you see yourself in 5yrs time? “When doing makeup especially on myself, it is the time I get to block out the pressures of the world and just be creative and challenge myself to get better each time. Makeup is the most exciting and nerve wreaking work ever. Getting new different and beautiful faces to transform is quite a challenge but that's what I love about it, each time I meet someone new and make them feel more beautiful it is everything to me, I wouldn't trade it for the world. As they say, "When you doing something you love, it doesn't feel like you are working. In 5yrs time I see myself having my own beauty salon. where not only make up is offered but nail art, hair, all the works like a prestigious spar in the hood (Ekasi). I would love my sisters to also be part of that. I just want to bring the 5-star beauty pampering to the townships, where I was raised".

When not busy with studies and Beauty By Landa, what do you do to keep sane? “Calling & video calling my sisters just to annoy them and joke around. They are my world, they are the people I relate to the most in this world, and they just keep me sane. After my mother died in 2015 they held my hand and kept me going and they still do. Also listening to music and taking walks”.

Any message to your peers about the importance of starting your own hustle? “I would advise my peers that the world we live in now is upside down and no one is coming to rescue you from a difficult financial situation you ' re in right now but yourself. Start something of your own, multiple streams of income is key".

Choosing the right broker for your investment needs.

What is a stockbroker?

So, you ' ve decided to jump on the investment bandwagon and start considering putting your money into a brokerage account. That's great! The first step is understanding the language of investments and how they can help you achieve your financial goals. Investing is a broad term, but it generally refers to trading stocks, bonds, mutual funds or other types of securities. In finance speak, a stockbroker is simply the person who buys or sells these assets for you in exchange for a commission (fee).

Now that we ' ve clarified what a stockbroker does, let's discuss how the industry has evolved and what options are available to new investors.

What is your investment strategy?

Before you sign up for an account, it's essential to decide what kind of investor you want to be. Are you a day trader with fingers on the pulse of buzzy companies at all times? Are you looking to invest over years or decades? Do you want to pay as little in fees and commissions as possible, even if it means limiting your investment options? Do you plan to keep close tabs on your investments, or do you trust that they'll grow over time without much attention from you? Below are important questions for every investor.

Do you need advisory services?

You're on your own. Okay, so maybe it's not as dramatic as that.

25 The Konvenient Magazine

It’s just that the pool of advisors you can choose from is a bit more limited than the one for fullservice brokers. But don't worry: there are still enough to satisfy the hungriest of investors (and keep you up at night wondering what to do).

It’s worth noting that many online brokerages now offer access to an advisor, even if they don't offer a traditional advisory service. These advisors can help you set goals and develop investment strategies to meet them, and they can also answer any questions you might have while using the platform a win-win!

What are the fees on the platform?

If you ' re still reading, you may be asking yourself, "Ok, but why do I care about these fees?" The answer is in your returns. They will eat into your interest earnings if you plan to invest long-term (we are talking retirement time). Make sure to compare them before signing up with any investment platform!

In Summary:

Choosing the right investment platform can be the most critical part of your journey to financial freedom. There are a lot of platforms out there, and it can be hard to know which one is right for you! Let’s look at some criteria for choosing a platform that will work for you:

Make a list of your investor needs. Write down your investment strategy and objectives, experience and level of involvement, fees, advisory services, etc. What do online reviews say about each platform? This will give you an indication of how reliable they are. Has the company been around long enough? Be wary if they haven’t yet weathered an economic storm. How easy is the interface to use? Can you quickly check your account status, or will you have to jump through hoops and wait on hold every time you want to see how much money you ’ ve made (or lost)?

Anything is possible

Movement, real name Khulile Moyake is a Gqeberha born rapper, who grew up in Motherwell before moving to New Brighton where he currently resides. “My favourite artist is Abantu from Motherwell, back in the days when I was new to listening to Hip Hop music I got hooked by his writing skills, the flow and how he tell the story. Musically for you which genre sounds like the biggest at the moment? “I think the Yano’s are the big thing now because most of the time in big events around SA its Amapiano artist’s in the front line of the lineup”.

Back to you, when did you commence with your music and what motivated you to start? “This thing of music was always burning inside me, because I remember in primary school me and my friends use to love and enjoy listening to Zola. I was the one who was always quick to memorise Zola’s lyrics then perform for them. Fast forward, I started to write my own lyrics when I was in high school 2014. One of the things that motivated me to start was the feeling that I got every time I write music, an inexplainable but out of this world feeling, and that made me think this is a calling for me ” .

"Azi Dlala speaks Digital CamaguThis

Year!!!"

Gqeberha Hip Hop star and videographer

AziSAreal name Azi Dlala, has recently released new visuals of his well receiced and loved single named “THIS YEAR”, a slow tempo feel good song with self motivation lyrics about speaking things into existence, very relevant to every hustler out there, and the visuals which Azi himself directed are stunning, giving the Gqeberha well-known Stanley Street in Richmond Hill a world class look and feel On the song Azi featured a very talented upcoming female musician AV Raincandy who has been recognized and well spoken of by most artists who have heard her music and some have worked with her. The song “THIS YEAR” is taken from an album he released July 2021 named WRITURN, an album he decided -

not to release any audio of it yet but has been releasing the album visuals since it dropped, now that’s what we can all agree that this musician is not about following trends and the normal ways of doing things but he is ready to penetrate the national music industry in his own different way while he is comfortably growing his brand.

In 2021, Azi and his friends began a hip hop movement called Digital Camugu, which exists as an ongoing event that introduces Hip Hop to more than it’s limited audience but to the whole creative and art industry as a whole, including the community and business owners. The event collaborates with local venues like restaurants and -

The Konvenient Magazine

- designers from fashion to street wear, to make sure each industry is introduced to the other through the sessions they host monthly. This event has already pulled old school rappers interest as they are also accommodated in it to bring their experience and raps, while being introduced to the new sound and new talent in the Hip Hop space. The Digital Camugu event promises to be going big this year as they have the sponsors to take the event forward, the next event dates with be shared on their events social platforms so make sure to follow @digitalcamagu on all your social platforms.

We asked Azi if moving to bigger cities like JHB makes sense to him as an artist who is doing well home, and he replied by saying YES and NO. His YES was because of the relationships he has strongly built with great artists in JHB that could potentially add value to the value he has already, also the fact that a move to bigger cities could assist him to be a great link between EC artists and Jozi, as he could easily plug any musician from EC to great opportunities he could be part of in Jozi.
