Tlou,

a

creative in the fashion industry with a lot to offer to the streets.

“I started drawing from a young age, from drawing pictures of cartoon characters, animals, cars and anything that drew my attention. Then moving forward after completing my high school I had to go to varsity, but I had trouble selecting the course I wanted, due to that I never knew what I wanted to do. Those days the only options were standard everywhere were from IT, Law Accounting and etc, of which I never had interest

(Midrand

Institute). They had a graphic design course which I enrolled for and went to join. I attended class for about a week then came across their fashion design course, my mind just blew and I knew that’s what I wanted to do because I liked clothes and loved to design. I quickly spoke to my Head of Dept and asked to change, and next thing boom there I was, the only guy in a fashion design class”.

“After 3yrs I completed my 3yr Diploma in Fashion at MGI and MGI is where Freak Nyana was founded. I created

it as I was coming up with

designs for my final year project. I wanted my range to be cool, sexy edgy but with a little bit of my own personality in it, which is simple and down to earth. So it had to be all that freak with a bit of control. So that’s how Freak’Nyana came about”.

PAGE 07

"So

after

completing

my

studies

at

MGI,

I

knew I wanted to be in the real business of fashion and for that I needed to study more. I then decided to go back to school and study more business orientated courses and that’s when I went on to join LISOF retail academy, that was 2011 to 2012 and that is where I learnt more about the fashion industry and the business of it".

Challenges you faced since inception?

“Initially the criticism was

hectic starting from joining the fashion class, being the only guy in class, carrying a sewing machine, doing a t-shirt brand, the brand name

etc,

it

really

never

stopped

he

giggled.

But

that

never

bothered me as I new my path and that going against the grain comes with resistance. Also sourcing the right material for my products like fabric, quality printing and embroidery was not a walk in the park”.

Your highlights this far?

"One of my highlights is when I got a call

from Studio 88 and they told me their CEO was interested in the brand and that he wanted it in his stores. They asked me to come down from Durban to Joburg to present the brand to him and his team. I remember meeting and presenting to him in the board room and he actually stopped me before finishing and told me he doesn’t want

We

PAGE 16

Challenges since inception?

“One of our greatest challenges when

starting out was how we’ll market the products. Customer’s tend to build sustainable relationships with brands and when solid it becomes harder to introduce something new to them especially when you’re a stranger. Our researchers found that most South African are scared or rather they refuse to try out new products. However, Tshiamo Mabona one of our top markers at Vigor Perfumes in charge of everything that has to do with how we market the brand, insisted we distribute our perfumes to agents all over the country in bulks. Our researchers also found that people are most likely to buy or rather support people they know or a face they familiar with. For this reason he understood by distributing perfumes to agents in different provinces, they are most likely to sell to their close friends, families, colleagues and around the area they reside in. This allowed us to reach our target market, also the likes of using social media marketing has played a huge role".

KHANZINATOR Get to know Sivuyile Kanzi, who is well known as Khanzinator on the radio a name he was given by a colleague whom he was her show’s content producer. Born in Joburg Tambo Memorial Hospital, Boksburg, the 29Years old is currently located Queenstown serving the community with information on radio, but home is in Lady Frere Tsembeyi Village. Sivuyile studied in Joburg all his grades until

his tertiary studies where

he did Radio Broadcasting Course at Intec College. He later enrolled at Wits University to complete his media studies before moving to Eastern Cape to seize experience of medium as he did after school.

“I started to work as a Content Producer in 2018 for a magazine show airing from 09:00-12:00am weekdays. A show that is so affluent with information and very educative. The same 2018 I was made Head of Production by the station manager and I was so jovial about that. The inspiration for radio I got ever since I was young at primary school when I will always catch my grandparents listening to radio, and I had this in my mind that "one day I want them to listen to me when I'm on radio" unfortunately they both passed on before they could hear me on radio doing what I love”.

What would you be doing maybe, if you were not doing radio? “If I was not on radio probably now I would be a Nurse or Radiographer. I love to help people a lot and working with people is what keeping me going”.

PAGE 19 What made you say YES I have chosen the right career and what has been your highlight thus far? “Absolutely I am on the right

path,

the

enthusiastic

I

have

for

the

industry

it’s

so

indisputable as I always ace my work. My biggest moment on radio was when I received an award from the station as the station appreciated me because of my diligent work, great engagement with the listeners and as well as managing to talk with the prominent well known celebrities such as Sindi Dlathu, Kelly Khumalo, Dj Sbu, Thembsie Matu and the list is endless”.

Tell us about your show at the station: “The Midday Connexion is a very relaxing show that brings joy to me including my listeners.

It's

full

of

good

music,

educating

and

very

entertaining, which air on weekdays from 13:00-15:00pm. I became part of the show in 2019 when the previous presenter of

the

show

left

the

station

for

greener

pastures.

The

management then had me to fill in the gap and I took that opportunity with open heart and I made numbers increase even better than those came before me for the show. I have the best relationship with my listeners, we laugh and mingle as we enjoy the show. Just recently, I am made Programme Manager and it's so challenging because I have something to be aggro towards my colleagues and they are also my friends but I always put work first and after all I love challenges”.

Lastly, how did you kept sane during lockdown? “During this pandemic I make sure that I follow the regulation that our president put, sanitize wear musk is what I keep preaching on my show as well those regulations. So that's how I keep myself sane during the lockdown.

In her words she concluded, “A black-owned female beautician that can service the Humansdorp, Jeffrey’s Bay and St Francis area with dreams to include more ladies from the townships to her clientele”. Post level5 lockdown Xoli had the courage and self-belief to save up and buy her own massage bed which she uses to service private clients after hours as she has a 9 to 5. She has been a beautician for the last 15 years, and has learnt that most of her clients are white ladies who can afford her spa services hence she is determined to open

shop.

Falling pregnant at 17 due to non-existent sex education Xoli is now a single mom to two daughters. She was the only girl in a family of 25 and has had to fight hard for most things in life. Other jobs she has excelled at as she grew up includes grass cutting and rising early to sell trotters at the nearest taxi rank.

Currently she works at a Salon where she feels she can double their profit if she can go for her Spa dream shop. But she cannot quit the job as she has to still support her mom who stays with her two daughters in Cradock. One of her daughters takes after her mom’s footsteps as she has started selling amagwinya at school to make pocket money. But the brighter side is that Xoli is currently saving all of her after hours money for her future Spa shop. And as she fully respects her current employer Xoli strictly accepts bookings for after hours.

My inspiration of starting my catering business was purely from the love and passion I have for food and the satisfaction I get when cooking, catering for people and getting their heartwarming feedback".

Challenges since inception?

"The first challenge was I found hard

was to balance my job at that time and LovEat, both required me to be hands on because I couldn’t afford to employ anyone to help me out as I just started the business. Capital was and also is a huge challenge as it is an obstacle delaying some of the goals that I’ve set out for the business.

Any highlights thus far?

“The cooking journey for the past 7 months

since I’ve opened has been nothing but amazing, cooking on a day to day basis for the public, catering to private and public events, funerals and birthday parties. One of my biggest highlights of 2020 was to feature on a national radio station (MhloboWenene FM) show”.

So I've chosen the name through hell but unconsumed because I have faced insurmountable trials and tribulations which could have killed me but I'm still standing. "Be where you belong..." TUNNEL VIZION

Neo Molokoane better known as “Neo Beats” Now “T.VIZION” was groomed by the humble streets of Ndofaya in Soweto. Growing up as child Neo got into an accident and as a result lost an eye and had to undergo an operation and was teased as a child for having a lazy eye, this is one of the moving parts that brought the transition and new stage name aside from the obvious factor that the old name “Neo Beats” only suggested that he is a producer, one that is familiar within

the

Hip

community.

Now

with

But one of the biggest challenges in my music career is definitely media coverage, getting our content aired on both radio and TV on a national scale is something that still proves a challenge to this day, and that has changed my attitude from bad to good as I take every little opportunity with both hands and try to get the music out there as much as I can”.

Musically, what pushed your current transition and share about your new single? “I realised that my sonic appeal was changing and people had been thinking I’m just a producer so I had to fix that narrative, and beyond that I had more color to show, vocals and production went further than just the hip hop landscape, afrobeats and other genres started creeping up under my skin till I felt it was time for change and to let the artist in me show up more. My new current single is called “The Distance” and I will be dropping an EP/Album around Easter time which is heavy on Afro Beats x Hip Hop”.
