Any challenges you faced when started to implement your idea, especially finances as most individuals need capital to implement their ideas? “Yes, financial aid has been a need just for purchasing oils. Also sourcing of different types of oils is time consuming. Financing myself has forced me to budget and choose between

Nema naturals is a female black owned business that is passionate about the holistic health and natural nurturing of women. The business was launched on the 30th of September 2020. How was it birthed? Thelma’s passion for healthy hair pushed her into thinking more in the lines of organic products.

"Hair is like a delicate flower, you need to nurture, prune and nourish it for it to grow".

W I T H

Ayanda Mekgwe Please share your full name and surname, where you were born and currently resides – together with their academic background. "Ayanda Mekgwe, born in Diepkloof Soweto and still live in Diepkloof. I have a BA degree from

Wits

University

majoring

in

Psychology, Marketing and HR".

When did you start with your profession and what drove you to that field at first? "I am a flight attendant at a South African airline. I have been flying with the airline for over 2 years now. I remember the first time I saw a flight attendant, it was my first flight. My grade 6 class had won a competition to Disneyland in Paris in 1996. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I walked up the aircraft door and saw the FA, she said hi and welcomed me into aircraft, I knew there and then this was what I wanted to do".

In your experience as a Flight Attendant thus far – have you ever found yourself regretting why you started? "Not at all. This is literally my dream job. Every time I put on my uniform I get goose bumps as I sometimes cannot believe that I’m a FA. I doubt I could ever tire of this job. You know what they say “choose a career you love, and you will never work a day in your life" that’s me literally everytime I go to work".

PAGE 17

Since your industry was affected by lockdown – what did you do to cope during lockdown? "Aviation was one of the hardest hit industries during lockdown. I am so grateful that I started a home based business through a company in the network marketing industry, we retail world class aloe vera based health and wellness products, this side hustle has helped me and my family during the hard times of lockdown, ensuring we had a source of income while helping others look and feel good through health products".

Your take on GBV? –

"Firstly we must look at the word GENDER

based violence, we often forget that males too can be victims of GBV. We more often than not see cases of women reported as males are afraid to report these because of the stigma, and or embarrassment they feel if they report a case. The justice system has

failed

GBV

victims

tremendously

both

women

and

men.

It

tends to focus on issues that can be solved much quicker than they do this issue. It is very sad and worrisome that the one place people can run to for help is the one place that turns them away".

Your advice to a young girl who considers your profession? "Choose a career not because a friends but because it talks to you. There is a fire in your belly when you think about it, if your dreams

scare

definitely

go

you, for

that

them.

means For

those

are

who

want

should in

my

profession I would advice them that we as FA are the face of the company, we represent the company so it is important for us to always look the part. The training is a grueling process, you must bring everything you’ve got. You need to be confident, have a passion for people, customer service is a must. Let the fire inside burn into an inferno, and fly high as the sky is not even the limit".

“I have always been part of initiatives that support young people, influenced by my mother as she was awarded as the community builder of the year by SABC and Sowetan in 2005 – so from then my love for the community made me want to play my part. In 2015 while in varsity I then decided to start Bomvane Youth Foundation because I saw a need for mentorship of young people in different fields. Since I’m from a rural area that is affected by many social issues and I know that lack of guidance is needed among young people and through the foundation I wanted to do that. I started with providing tutoring sessions in schools around, to hosting career exhibitions and to also partnering with various organizations".

WHY condoms and when did you started working on your product? “It’s been over 38 years since the first HIV cases were found and have been growing and destroying lives, and it seems like we’re losing the battle as people are still testing positive even today, so condoms are very important and they are one of the contraceptives that doesn’t have side effects”.

“So I started Raw pleasure this year which is 2020 because I always have been very conscious and sensitive about sexual intercourse results in my high school days, a lot of young people are testing positive for HIV and we don’t normally talk about it".

PAGE 25

“And even in talking about it we do not emphasize that it is always an individual decision to put their life at risk or protect themselves from any real consequences. So this product is created for women to freely and boldly have it without waiting for man to decide on condomising, and also it is made to remind men that raw pleasure can be done with a condom too, as the quality of the product is as good as people like it raw”.

You mention on your market material that people should not support you because you’re black – what’s the thinking behind that statement? “I need people to support me because of the quality of my product before the colour of my skin because I don’t want to only dominate locally but to also compete with other big brands, because the market is black and white”.

Any retail stores has your product yet? “ For now I am busy trying to get the products in retail stores, so for now people who want to buy or know more about these condoms they can find me on the social platforms and DM my personal or business account I will assist from there”.

PAGE 26

Brought

TO YOU BY AFRIKA KESHO

One of the most important things of today’s day and age is money. That’s because money is the tool used to exchange value between two entities. When you buy a pair of shoes from Bathu, or jeans from Tshepo Jeans, the value you are getting is that product you want, and the value they are getting is the money you gave them - which they can use to continue running their businesses and livelihoods.

Right now, in order to live comfortably, you need to be able to buy yourself food, clothes, clean water, shelter, and so on. And all of that, needs money and that’s one of the reasons why money is important.

Even from the perspective of a community - the black community for example - money can be a powerful tool for justice and change. In the wrong hands, which in my opinion it is, money can also be a destructive force. It can fuel greed and form the grounds for human and

environmental

exploitation.

Money

is

a

crutch

because

of

society’s value of money. It crutches the poor - it helps us maneuver but puts the poor in a vulnerable position. Even an example as simple

as

Clicks,

where

to

them

it

was

an

oversight,

but

it

invalidates our being and identity, but because they are monied they we are in a position where canceling Clicks would cost us our livelihoods (and beloved products).

PAGE 27 To be able to make money is to be able to survive within this capitalistic system, and to have money is to have the freedom to choose how you would like to live. That’s mostly why I would like to make money, because I’d like to have freedom.

In my view, money is simple, but the financial system intentionally makes it sound technical so that they can maximize profits. By making it seem like we can’t manage our own money, and grow our own

wealth,

they

make

wealth

from

us.

This

is

not

to

say

the

financial system is simple, it isn’t, but it is learnable.

Learning about money - financial education - is a very important factor

in

getting

economic

freedom

for

those

who've

been

disadvantaged. Financial education should be available to people in the lowest tiers of society. And if anything, there shouldn’t even be any tiers to society. When everyone is knowledgeable about money, they are empowered to make decisions and develop habits that will eventually lead to their wealth. Wealth and income are not the same thing. You can have a high income, but if you consume 100% of it month after month, you aren’t getting wealthier. A case in point is shows like “How I blew it”, they show that even if you strike a jackpot, you probably aren’t much better off than you were if you don’t know how to manage that jackpot.

That’s part of why financial education and financial literacy are important. To help with educating all communities about money and the financial system, Afrika Kesho is developing a course based on an original concept we created called the Personal Finance Framework. Please let us know if you’d be interested in a course like this, and what else you’d like us to teach you by going over to our website and filling in the survey at the end of this article.

“The title of my latest book is The Jumpstart Effect: Why Human Connections Matter? I started writing it in 2017, inspired by an experience of being stuck on the road when the battery of the car died, and we were helped by a stranger to jumpstart the car”.

"So this is my third book. And one big challenge was figuring out how much of my own journey to share and not knowing whether I am oversharing or not. However, I found comfort in the view that I will never know how people will receive it until I put it out there. I had to take that risk. So far it seems that the personal stories I share

weaving together the Nguni adage Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu, the story of my own journey, and snippets from inspiring stories of others as testimony that human connections matter”.

Is your book available in any bookstores – and people who are not where you at, how can they get it and price? “The book is not

hopefully it will be before the end of the year. For now, people can order the book through my social media platforms and we will ship the book to them. It is R250 per copy excl. shipping”.

Lastly, the pandemic – what has it taught you?

“The pandemic

took place at a time I was still working on the book to finalise it. So, because of it, I was even convinced about the idea that human connections matter. What the pandemic did was to force all of us to go into lockdown, which in many ways served as an unfriendly reminder

that

our

contact

"Good things happen to those who make things happen". VEE THE BELIEVER

Meet Siviwe Masiza who's stage name as "Vee The Believer", from a small town in the Eastern Cape called Ngqamakwe but currently resides in East London juggling part time studies in Accounting Science while building his music career.

“My

father

was

an

entertainer

every

time

when

he's

around

everybody would cheer up so entertaining people is in my blood. I started doing music in 2013. Back then I was inspired by rhythms in my head that nobody else but me could hear. I then sang in a choir at school as a tenor guy. My friend and mentor can attest that I so much enjoy music. Over the years I've been part of the local bands, playing at community halls, bashes and enter national contests like the "Annual Heath Walk and Art Hub" and had pleasure of sharing stage with the greats like Simbone, Scroof Ace, also with the likes of Ami Faku, Thembi Mona, Bulela M. And those moments became such a major inspiration to me”.

Challenges you faced as a musician? “As I'm just a new kid in the block with no connection in the industry it was very hard for me to get a studio to record, I would go from my village to another for a session. But now that I'm in East London I have a friend of mine whom I record with and he's closer to where I'm residing. Someday I got booed on stage before I can perform. But that didn't stop me I kept on hustling for great

events

with

people

who

weren't

intimidated by my potential”.

Tell us about your single DURABLE – and do you feel like people support your music ? “I had hiccups in my journey I decided

some artists I was trying to develop but unfortunately the art of development have been lost in the music industry, artists are chasing fame. The song has been doing good but not yet where I want it to be. As talented as I think I am, I don't think most South Africans know my music. They are missing out a lot, they're not ready for the kid cause I feel like I'm the next big thing man.

FOR BOOKINGS:

There's a new single coming (date to

be announced soon)”.
