The man is the co-founder of Masinyusane – an organisation that is there to develop and empower South Africans through education. He is also a stand up comedian who always leave smiles on the audience faces from theatre productions to being an MC to events like My City and more.

We asked Fiks what led to the forming of Masinyusane?

“So I

“Previously I had started a business called “Lashed Up” which was based on women’s eye lashes and it actually was my first business in 2018. I always wanted to start a business that I’ll love and have a passion for but never really knew what it was. Then a good friend of mine had a chat this one day about how I should do a business based on my looks, features as well as social media. I then had a “Eureka” moment where I literally found an answer to what I wanted to venture on. I’ve always loved my body and grew up being insecure about my dark skin which today makes me even more beautiful, so I came up with @bodied_sa because with being so confident about my body, I wanted a lot of other women to be confident about themselves and achieve the body goals they want. Selling waist trainers and on a later stage lingerie, was the idea I came up with, I then launched my business on the 1st of September 2020 and my life changed ever since that day”.

PAGE 07

“The response I got towards the launch of my business was very overwhelming, I mean when you start a business it’s always a trial and error sort of thing that goes through your mind and whether or not people will like what you sell or even buy any of your items, but the day I opened for orders was the day I received so much support from so many people, it was amazing and to say the least, I was extremely happy, and still am”.

What are the advantages of using a waist trainer? “There are many advantages of wearing shape wear/waist trainers that many people are actually still unaware of. These are, it reduces back pain and provides back support, eliminates love handles, defines the waistline, increases body confidence, accelerated weight loss and lastly it can be comfortably worn under clothing. However, we do advise our clients not to wear it when going to sleep or longer that 5 hours max”.

Are these available in any retail stores or you have your own shop? “We’re currently an online store and don’t have a physical shop yet, however by God’s grace we hope to have a walk in store soon”.

How did you survive lockdown? “To

be honest, the lockdown was

one of the most hardest moments ever, I had such a hard time trying to adjust to the “new normal” because it had affected so many parts of my life. One thing that got me through though was prayer

BY KAYLA & ZINTLEZONKE

Tiny Treats was founded by Lebohang Dolo, also known as ‘Kayla’ and Zintle Mazibuko, also known as ‘Zintlezonke’. They both reside in Vosloorus in the Eastrand. Lebohang is a graduate from the University of Pretoria and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Sciences and Zintle is a graduate from Rosebank College and has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Sciences.

Tiny Treats was founded and launched on the 2nd of June 2020, and it was inspired by a business called VPP gifts ‘n things from Botswana. We were inspired so much that we wanted to bring the concept to South Africa. Our target market is everyone who wants to gift their loved ones no matter what age, and make their day special. It’s also people who want to gift someone but have no idea what they should get them, and therefore Tiny Treats has made gifting so simple and at an affordable price.

The only challenged we faced when starting the business was that we started with no capital and therefore were fully dependant on client orders for the first month. At Tiny Treats we have a standard pricelist for our packages and our clients also have the option to customize their own packages, whereby they let us know what they want inside and we quote them according to that.

PAGE 10

Our package prices range from R250R1000. The package price is exclusive of the delivery fee. The delivery fee is charged according to the location of delivery. We use a delivery company called Prime Cottini, @primecottini on Instagram. Our clients need to pay the whole

As the digital world is taking over so many young people have decided to learn and apply their skills to make a living, which is a very positive and right thing to do especially now that one can run a

Most

startups they

are

are not

branded or professionally formed to have a digital appearance, which is organizations like us are always a need. We were doing this for a while but we started officially as a formal business on February 25th 2020. We felt that we had to take our future into our hands as we have the acquired skillsets to do so.

"In the next 5 years we want to see our business fully grown and moved out from working in a room to an official business space where we will have a team of young people who do not only work for us but sometimes do tutor classes for our community kids so they can also be digital citizens. And our advice to other youth is it do not matter where you come from but always look at the future with a positive mindset".

PAGE 24

It's OKAY TO BE SELFISH Let me start with an unpopular opinion: it’s okay to be selfish; to focus on your own needs first. Often, many of us are brought up to believe that being selfish is completely wrong; we are made to believe that doing so will create ill feelings between us and our friends, family, or the world in general. I believe this should not be the case. This is because, believe it or not, focusing on your own needs first will benefit you and the world around you in many more ways than if you choose to do the opposite. The value you will add to both your life and the lives of the people important to you may not be immediate, but it is worth it.

You will notice that in none of the statements I have made until now

have

I

said,

“focus

on

what

you

want.”

This

distinction

is

important to make because as much as focusing on your needs can add the greatest value to your life and the lives of those around you, the process often requires sacrifice. And yes, I said sacrifice; that taboo word that no one who aspires to live an easy life wants to hear.

The reason sacrifice comes into the picture is simple: when you focus on your own needs, you should not only learn to say no to the rest of the world, but you should learn to say no to yourself as well.

PAGE 25

This includes saying no to certain desires you might have that give you temporary satisfaction, but ultimately take away value from the greatest investment – which is YOU. Say no to desires that leave you worse off at the end of the day.

Do you remember that “TASTY BURGER COMBO” that you indulge in regularly? I’m talking about that combo that leaves you begging for more despite putting a dent in your wallet. That one that leaves you begging for more even though hours later you forget about all that goodness like it never happened. Yes, that one. You must learn to say no to buying it! I’m not saying you shouldn’t treat yourself with good food once in a while, but why not buy yourself a book instead?

If you’re skeptical about being selfish enough to buy yourself a book instead of going out and spending all your money this weekend on friends and alcohol (a satisfaction that is temporary), ask yourself about the value you gain from reading a worthwhile book. With a good book you will learn a new skill, a skill that will help you get that promotion, a skill you can turn into a business, or simply a skill that can help ease your life and make you live better. For the young audience, don’t wait for later in life to start buying and reading books and learning the skills these books have to offer. Start now. Just like how an investment in any asset will give you higher returns (more money) if invested for a longer period of time, as opposed to one

invested

for

a

shorter

period

of

time;

the

same

principle

applies. The earlier you start, the greater the returns. In case you’re thinking, “But buying and reading books to gain new skills is not investing in anything,” think again. Investment in yourself has an economic term attached to it called human capital investment.

MAKEUP ARTIST

MakeUp By Blossom CHUMA MRAMBA

Meet Chuma Mramba from Mount Frere, who is currently residing in East London, Eastern Cape. She has recently obtained her Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) in Medical Laboratory Sciences. Chuma started to her makeup business in 2018 till present.

“Generally I am a very ambitious and zealous person. I strongly believe that I am unique and distinct for a purpose. I have a great potential to make all my dreams a reality. I always liked looking good and classy even if I am off to nowhere. I would sometimes spend more time putting my makeup on than the time I spend on the bath, and this was all because I wanted to perfect my makeup before approaching my friends and the public to share my skill for the business I always wanted to own. After few times I have been trying friends noticed my amazing work and some were already asking me to plug them to the person who touches my face and that is when I gained confident to get my makeup business off the ground”.

BOOK REVIEWS:

"This is such an inspirational book, it definitely

should be read by both the youth and their parents because from the description it’s self, it gives hope to the young ones that things can change for the better when you choose God to be your Lord and Savior and to the parents, it teaches them to have patience with their own children, no matter what they do, for or agains the law, they are capable of change and only if it is God’s will".
