BODY MATTERS
DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE TREAT YOURSELF TO ONE! Whether you’re a sports person, placing a high demand on your body, someone who sits at a desk all day looking at a screen, recovering from an injury or illness, or simply stressed, deep tissue massage has something to offer you. Research shows that massage used alone or in conjunction with other treatments like physiotherapy is an effective way of helping to treat conditions like arthritis, anxiety and chronic lower back pain. Deep tissue massage (DTM) involves manipulation of the deep layers of tissue in the body getting down to all layers of muscle and connective tissue, including the fascia, which is a tissue packed with nerve endings and a common source of tension and discomfort in the body.
The benefits of DTM are numerous. Here are some of them: 1. Helps to reduce chronic back pain 2. Helps to reduce high blood pressure 3. Reduces stress, anxiety and tension 4. Helps break up scar tissue 5. Improves athletic recovery and performance by reducing DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) 6. Can help with pregnancy pain and labour pain. 7. Reduces the symptoms of arthritis. 6
The effects of the DTM on the tissues of the body are incredible. The increase in blood supply to the tissues helps to flush out lactic acid and other toxins, releases fascial tension and scar tissue and stimulates a whole cascade of chemical responses which have a positive impact on your psychological state, leaving you with a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation. With its proven effects almost all of us would benefit from deep tissue massage, so why not book an appointment with a massage therapist now. Here at ProPhysio we have a team of dedicated therapists who are available to help you. Simply call ProPhysio on 01530 588557 to book your appointment.

LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS
HEATHER SCARECROW FESTIVAL IS BACK! Last year Heather Scarecrow Festival celebrated its 20th Anniversary in quite some style. The record year raised £9,000 for local groups with a bumper amount of visitors. The icing on the cake came with the event being awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in the Best Outdoor Experience category of the 2018 Leicestershire Tourism and Hospitality Awards. Quite an achievement for an event organised by community volunteers! This year’s event will take place from 11am on Sunday 28th July until 6pm on Sunday 4th August. The organisers plan to build on last year’s success for their 21st birthday event. As always, there will be ample free parking and the popular Tea Room at Heather St John’s Football Club (LE67 2QJ) with additional parking at Heather Village Hall (LE67 2RE). Once again local groups and charities have been invited to make use of the Village Hall to raise funds for their organisation whilst also selling Scarecrow guides and providing additional toilets and refreshment facilities. Details of the activities taking place at the Hall each day will be shown in the Festival Guide and announced on the Facebook Page. During the final weekend there will be additional stalls and face painting at the Football Club plus look out for a few extra surprises. This year the Forestry Commission are celebrating their 100th year. As part of their celebration they plan to display scarecrows and information about their history in Sence Valley Forest Park. Visitors should allow extra time so that you can explore the Forest Park as well as walking the scarecrow trail. Maybe you can visit Heather on more than one occasion throughout Scarecrow week to see as much as possible at a more leisurely pace.

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE
10 MINUTE BINGO WING TONER One of the most complained about parts of the body is the back of the arms so I thought would write you a short programme to help you tone them up. PRESS-UPS Target: arms, shoulders and chest
BENCH DIPS Target: triceps
Place your hands underneath your shoulders with your arms fully extended, palms flat and fingers facing forward. Legs are straight and knees are off the floor. Your body should form a rigid plank from head to toe. Lower yourself by bending your elbows out to the sides until your chest is about two inches above the floor. Push back up and repeat 10 to 15 times.
Sit on a stable chair with your hands gripping the edges either side of you. Inch your feet forwards to lift your bottom off the chair. Keep your knees hipwidth apart and bent at 90 degrees. Lower yourself by bending your arms to about 90 degrees, keeping your elbows tucked in. Push back up and repeat 10 to 15 times.
Tips: • Don’t let your hips sink as you lower yourself.
Tips: • Don’t thrust your hips up as you push back up.
• Avoid arching your upper back when pushing back up. • For an easier version, perform the press-up with your knees on the floor.
CLOSE-GRIP WALL PUSH UPS Target: triceps Stand at arm’s length (or further for more difficulty) from a wall. Place your hands on the wall at chest height and shoulder-width apart or closer. A closer grip will work your triceps harder. With elbows tucked in, bend your arms to lower your body towards the wall. Let your heels come off the floor as you lean in to the wall to keep your body straight. Push back up and repeat 10 to 15 times. Tips: • Your body should form a rigid plank from head to toe. • For more of a challenge, perform the exercise with your hands on a stable chair or on the floor.
16
• To make it easier, perform the exercise on the floor. • For more of a challenge, perform a bench dip with straight legs.
TRICEP KICKBACKS Target: triceps Kneel down on your right knee and lean forwards. Raise your left elbow behind you, keeping the arm bent at about 90 degrees. Straighten your left elbow to raise your arm behind you as far as feels comfortable. Bend your elbow to return to the starting position and repeat 10 to 15 times. Then, switch knees and perform the exercise with the right arm. Tips: • The elbow performing the kickback should stay raised during the exercise. • For more of a challenge, perform the kickback holding a weight (such as a dumbbell or a bottle of water).

WHAT’S ON FOR FAMILIES
SUMMER SPECIAL
As the six week summer holiday will soon be upon us with cries of ‘what are we going to do today?’ we thought you may find a roundup of ideas for local family fun handy. Here are our favourites…
Outdoor pool
Hood Park Leisure Centre, Ashby
Hood Park Leisure Centre features the only remaining lido in Leicestershire. It’s a perfect place to spend a sunny day splashing about with the kids and picnic on the pool side. It’s open until September but please check their website for opening times and prices at www.everyoneactive.com/ centre/hood-park-leisure-centre/outdoor-swimming-pool
Twycross Zoo, Twycross Young or old, everyone enjoys a day at the zoo. Twycross are continuously improving the site and welcoming new animals. Recent additions are the black rhino and this summer sees tigers arrive at the zoo with a brand new enclosure. The splash zone offers plenty of fun on warmer days with the soft play a winner on the not so sunny days. There are also plenty of places for snacks, drinks and ice-cream. See www.twycrosszoo.org/ to find out more or book your tickets online.
Hicks Lodge, Moira Hicks Lodge is a lovely area full of wildlife for a great family trip out. There are a variety of cycle trails for all abilities and a circular walk ideal for young children, buggies and your pooch. Along with a bird watching hut, a great play area and a café serving hot and cold food and delicious treats. For further info see their website www.forestryengland.uk/hicks-lodge
National Space Centre, Leicester
Conkers, Ashby
If the weather turns wet then head over to the Space Centre for some indoor fun. You’ll find six interactive galleries, the UK’s largest planetarium, and the iconic 42m high Rocket Tower. As we celebrate 50 years since the first moon landing it’s the perfect time to join their Mission Commanders for a trip to the moon from 12th July to 1st September. See www.spacecentre.co.uk for opening times and ticket prices.
For an action packed full day of adventure head to Conkers. There’s a whole variety of indoor and outdoor activities so it’s great whatever the weather. Outside enjoy the barefoot walk, the activity trail, the hi/lo ropes and take a ride on the Conkachoo train. Brand new this year are the warrens – a course of tunnels which twist and turn. Inside you can find a 4D cinema, the enchanted forest play area and the discovery zone. Extra events will take place daily throughout the summer holidays so see www.visitconkers.com for details.
Our local events page at www.ibstocklife.co.uk also has plenty of ideas for family days out. ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS After our atmospheric butterfly exhibition we are pleased that one of our trustees, Steven Saunders, has put on a display From the Archives, which focuses on a variety of artefacts from the Museum’s own store, exploring their history. Steven is also responsible for our annual Family Archaeology Day, this year on Saturday 27th July. All ages, but particularly children, are welcome – the latter must be accompanied by an adult. Our Past and Present journal, number 21, was published last month and includes two separate memories from boys who were evacuated to our town from King Edward VI School, Birmingham, in the 1940s; a detailed study of opencast coal mining near Lount and the subsequent discovery of Mediaeval artefacts; the story of St. Helen’s Parish Rooms (now the Venture Theatre); the enlargement and refurbishment of St. Helen’s Church in the late 1870s and an explanation of why an archbishop’s chair can be found in St. Mary the Virgin’s Church, Coleorton.

The next town history walk will be on Wednesday 24th July, starting from the Museum at 7pm. Should you wish to join us and find out more about the town’s history, please call 01530 560090 to book a place.

HOME & INTERIORS
GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME……
For centuries green colours have been widely used in our homes to make us feel closer to nature and create a sense of tranquility. When I was young, my uncle used to teach me how to improve and protect my eyesight by staring at green plants for at least 10-15 minutes a day. This is now scientifically proven to help soothe the eyes and improve our eyesight! In the December 2016 issue, in this column I wrote, ‘Is green the new grey?’ Now is the time to confirm the statement and say………oh yes it is! Sitting right in the middle of the colour wheel, green hues reach out to both ends of the spectrum to strike balance. The combination of green and white colours can have the same impact as red and white, and still give us a sense of calmness. With the rise in popularity of ‘greenery trends’, green shades are becoming even more significant and vibrant than ever. Why don’t you experiment with some green combined with ‘warm colour’ wood furniture to refresh your room. Or perhaps add a green marble sink with brass fittings in your kitchen design? If you want to spark a bit of colour romance, pantone colour of the year 2019 ‘Living Coral’ and leafy green could be a great start for a perfect colour-match in heaven.

IN YOUR GARDEN
SWIMMING POOLS Pools look best if they fit seamlessly into a garden, which unsurprisingly takes careful planning. A swimming pool will be a dominant feature that is hopefully unique and visually pleasing. The shape and size of a pool, together with its proportion and proximity to the house and the amount of garden around it, shall impact on its success. A beautifully rounded and curved pool can look harmonious within its setting, especially with soft planting close by. Similarly, the simplicity of a rectangular pool with an infinity edge can beautifully lead the eye to a view. Under water lighting in a pool should be considered as this can result in a dramatic night time effect. Apart from the physical constraints of a site, the size of pool should be determined on the intended use and who is to use it, whether this will be for serious swimming, leisure or as a visual focal point. For the purposes of swimming a clear length of 9-10 meters is really the minimum span required. This span can be accommodated
July garden ing jobs • Keep dead heading bedding plants and repeat flowering perennia ls • Feed lawns with a summer feed if you missed out feeding in Spring • Plant autumn flowering bulbs such as Crocuses • Cut back plants in baskets and feed to help revive tired displays • Cut back Delphiniums and Geraniums to encourage second flowering and feed • Divide clumps of bearded Iris • Treat black spot on Roses

within a rounded or organically shaped pool. To dive into a pool a minimum depth of 2.2meters is needed. The use of an outdoor pool will be increased if it is positioned in full sun. A west facing pool together with a lounging patio is ideal if the pool is to be used in the evenings, after work for example. Similarly an easterly appointed pool is ideal if the swimming is to be done in the mornings. Having a wall or hedge around a pool to create an enclosed space is a nice design detail, reducing wind speed and water evaporation. The tile or skin colour inside the pool is emphasised by the water. The darker the tile then the greater the reflection of the sky and landscape in the water. This can be dramatic and beautiful. There was a trend a few years ago for black tiles which do create a wonderful mirroring the sky, but black can be considered especially dangerous as the bottom of the pool cannot be clearly seen. The traditional turquoise tile seems to be the norm still. Green tiles are quite in vogue presently and do often look very effective and blend well into a garden. Sit back, enjoy your garden and some sunshine.
Happy gardening! 38

PARKRUN PRACTICE The practice has become an official parkrun practice. This means we will be encouraging doctors, staff and patients to join a parkrun. You can walk, run, volunteer, take your dog, take your baby in a buggy or run with your kids, but what’s really important is that you join in and enjoy being outdoors with lots of other people. This can help you feel great and enjoy all the health benefits of doing exercise. The nearest parkrun is at Conkers in Moira every Saturday morning at 9am and it’s free. Hundreds of people join in and so it’s quite a sight! There are lots of other parkruns too which you can find on the parkrun website. If you’d like to speak to somebody in the practice who’s done a parkrun please ask at reception. There are a few who do one regularly and several others who’ve done at least one. ON THE BEAT
SECURE YOUR HOME
This month’s article is all about The Doors, no not the band, but your house doors. Your home is only as secure as its weakest point of entry. That’s why it’s so important to have doors that are as secure as possible.
Modern multi-locking and uPVC doors use a system of hooks and latches to secure the door but these only work if you lift up the handle and then remember to turn and remove the key. Remember – lift, lock and remove. You need a front door that is as solid and protective as can be; strong enough to withstand even the most determined burglar. Whether you live in a flat or a house, your front door will always tell a thief the levels of security surrounding your home. If it looks really secure and burglar-resistant, then they’ll think twice about trying to gain entry.
42
1. If your door has a letterbox, a guard fitted to the rear of the door will prevent someone e reaching in with a stick and a hook to fissh for any nearby items such as a handbag or keys.. Consider cat flaps and d dog fl flaaps too. 2. Windows can be reinforced by using special film or by installing laminated panels.
3. Spy holes and security chains are recommended so that anyone visiting can be identified before you open the door. 4. Always remember to use both locks and check to make sure that the mortice lock is double-locked every time you leave your home. Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3 x 3 box contains the digits 1 through 9, with no repetition. That’s all there is to it. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic - there’s no maths involved and no adding up. It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s additive!

LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS
HEATHER CHURCH WINS NATIONAL LOTTERY SUPPORT St John the Baptist church in Heather is celebrating the award of a grant of an amazing sum of £169,800 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The money has been awarded for the ‘Tower Crusade at Heather’ project. The project aims to do urgent repair work to the church tower and to encourage a wide range of heritage activities. Work will start this summer and be accompanied by heritage activities for local schoolchildren and communities. Working hand in hand with Ibstock Historical Society and Heather School the volunteers on the project will produce history and heritage trails both for adults and children. There will be opportunities to learn craft skills and emergency First Aid, as well as finding out about lead-casting and conservation work. Young people can also learn about the fascinating history of the church and its links with the Knights of St John by using the children’s trail or through fun sessions ‘Night with a Knight’.
Commenting on the award, Reverend Patty Bailey (Project Manager) said, “We’re delighted that this project can go ahead, thanks to National Lottery players. The church is a focal point in the village and it has a fascinating history, so it’s great to think we will be able to secure its future for generations to come.”

PETS’ CORNER
HOW TO BATHE YOUR CAT STRESS FREE Unlike our canine friends, cats don’t usually like being in the water and find it traumatic to be bathed. This causes severe stress if you’re not sure how to wash your cat, and the process becomes mem morable for the wrong reasons. You can bathe your cat only when it’s really needed – it doesn’t have to be a regular event. So here are a few tips to help you make this fairly infrequent but important e easier form of pet care for both you an nd your cat. p mat in • Use a non-slip your bath or sink.
• Lather your cat, preferably from tail to head, avoiding their eyes and ears. • Carefully rinse off the shampoo with a gentle shower head or carefully with a jug of warm water. • Wrap them in a soft, warm towel and dry them gently rather than using a noisy hairdryer. • Be patient and aware that they’’re stressed. • Gently offer reassurance as you bathe and dry them. Cats are very clean animals and generally perform an extensive and thorough self-cleaning rittual on a daily basis, ns you don’t have to which mean bathe the em as often as you might with a dog.
• Use warm watter, not hot.
With h a little know-how nd care, your feline an friend will soon be clean, dry, and ready to go to sleep on your knee.
• Don’t fill the h water too high – just up to their belly is fine.

THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS
THE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING CHARITY My team has been working up at Copt Oak this month, dry stone walling at a National Forest woodland. I’ve had to be in the office, so the days were led by my teammate Ben. Ben is a great illustration of how volunteering for TCV can give people new skills. Starting as a volunteer, he quickly accepted the role of a VO – a Voluntary Officer. VOs can, like Ben, start out as ordinary volunteers, or they can come to TCV specifically to be a VO. VOs are of all ages and backgrounds: retired people; career changers; people re-entering regular activity after illness, raising children or a period of unemployment; recent graduates needing the practical or project management skills that prospective employers are looking for. VOs volunteer for at least two days a week, for six months plus. During this time, in addition to the usual activity days, VOs receive extra training in a host of topics including First Aid, Day Leadership and Data Security. Many VOs move on quickly to a paid role in conservation. Others stay for long periods, choosing to be a VO as a rewarding and engaging hobby! Ben, having completed his time as a VO, is now working for TCV on a paid sessional basis, and (if he doesn’t get snapped up in the meantime) will, I hope, be an applicant for the next post we have available. Ben’s success story is a very common one here at TCV. If you too would be interested in a VO position, please contact kay.thompson@tcv.org.uk.

Your first choice for lawn care 2018 was a difficult year for your garden. Extreme weather conditions resulted in lawns that didn’t look their best. As we move towards the growing season, now is the time to start preparing your lawn to get the most from it. Our seasonal treatments start from just £5 per month*. Due to high demand, and to avoid disappointment, we advise that you
book your treatments early. If you think your lawn is beyond repair due to last year’s sweltering summer, ask us about our Lawn Makeover - the best way to get ‘The GreenThumb lawn.’
For your FREE lawn analysis & no-obligation quote, contact your local branch today.
