IN YOUR GARDEN

Watering in the summer

What a fabulous summer it’s been, totally wonderful! Immediately though gardeners will say, that the grass is like straw and hours are wasted just watering. Personally my pet hate for this time of year is that the hose isn’t quite long enough and why does it get so terribly tangled? Of course the solutions a flexible expandable hose, available in most garden centres. It might not rain for ages but if you have in place water butts to catch surface rain water from roofs, you are recycling watering and doing your bit for the environment. I believe water butts are essential in even a small garden and all new houses should have them as standard. These days water butts can be quite decorative and many are designed as attractive planters. Styles range from old fashioned milk churns or wooden barrels to bright modern cubes with impressive trendy detailing. The colour range is more diverse than it used to be too and the material that

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 the butts are made from isn’t just limited to plastic. The ceramic versions can look fabulous, although the price reflects that of course! There are a variety of sizes available to suit your requirements. Narrow designs are ideal for narrow passageways or where you are tight on space. Another efficient method of watering which is low on physical effort is to have an irrigation system. This is essentially a leaky pipe, sometimes called a porous pipe, often set on a timer. The porous pipe attaches to a standard hose. When it is turned on the water drips out of the pipe around the plants. The leaky hose is positioned around the plants to drip water just where it is needed. This system is particularly good if you are regularly away or just don’t have time for watering. The pipe doesn’t look very attractive so I try and hide it under foliage of plants or mulch over the top of it. A big advantage to the leaky pipe system is that it is not covered by a hosepipe ban. If there is not a hosepipe ban then sprinklers are effective. It is best to do this in the early morning so that as little water as possible is lost through evaporation. If you have plants that are susceptible to rotting, such as silver leaf plants, like Lavender, water in the morning so that the sun dries off excess moisture. A trough of water, or water bath where potted plants are put into water so it goes half way up the pot for a few minutes and then the plants are removed is an effective way of ensuring that the roots get water and this method is especially good for young plants where watering with a hose just wash the small plants from their pots. Lastly, simply mulching around plants will help the soil retain moisture.

Happy gardening!

IBSTOCK SURGERY NEWS Registration made easier!

We have reviewed our registration procedures and have decided to make it easier for new patients. This is to encourage patients to register with us as soon as you move into our area, not in a rush when you need to see the doctor. We realise that many people lead busy lives and are at work much, if not all, of the time we’re open. Therefore to ask you to come in and bring ID is difficult and may put you off registering until you really need to see a clinician. Therefore we’ll no longer be asking for ID or proof of your address in order for new patients to register. From now on, you can fill in one of our registration forms, drop it back to us at your convenience, or scan and email it if you have the facility, and we will register you provided you live in our practice area. So please if you’re living in our practice area, but haven’t got round to registering, pop in and get the forms, or download them from our website (www.ibstockhousesurgery.nhs.uk), fill them

in and return to us. We can get you registered straightaway, ready for when you need us.

Update on our Extension

We are still waiting for planning permission to be granted. We understand there are some queries from the Highways department and are hoping these will be resolved soon. The long delay is frustrating for us as well as for patients. Hopefully soon we’ll have some positive news and the extension can get started.

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE

Health & Fitness for the

Summer Holidays

The summer holidays are finally here but it doesn’t mean you have to abandon your health and fitness regime. It is definitely important to relax when you are on holiday but you can still have a fab time without over indulging. Here is a list of tips that will help you continue to manage your health and fitness: 1. Relax but definitely include movement in the equation as research says this will promote greater relaxation than doing nothing at all. 2. Control your eating at the all-inclusive buffet….you don’t have to eat just because you have paid for it! It will be there all holiday, no one is going to eat it all, leaving you nothing!

7. Do exercise at home, if you are not on holiday, you can climb the stairs or do some floor exercises.

3. The same applies to over drinking. Alcohol just makes life hard work when you feel so ‘poorly’ with a hangover.

9. Don’t let the summer holidays undo all of the effort you have put into looking after your health and fitness throughout the year.

4. Have structure and purpose, this helps you stay more positive and happy.

8. Get up early and do some exercise, that way it doesn’t interfere with your family time.

10. For the best quality of life stay fit and healthy always!

5. Stay out of the sun during the hottest times. 6. Do something physical for 30 minutes most days.

Diamond Jubilee Wood

TThis Woodland Trust site, p planted to commemorate tthe Diamond Jubilee, has u undergone a huge amount o of work over the last few yyears, transforming it into a w wonderful spot where you can stroll along hard paths, explore trackss across fields field of new plantations and n this walk we explore the other side enjoy the lake. In la to take us across farmland and of the site to the lake through mature woodland before returning to the mo Jubilee Wood covers a large waterside. The Diamond area between Normanton, Heather and Ravenstone – e car park which is accessed there is a good sized (free) o that runs between from Heather Lane, the road Normanton and Heather.

1

Exit the car park via the smalll swing gate which is opposite the car park entrance,, next to the signboard oll the wide showing a map of the site (1). Follow hard-core path as it bears right and then left leading towards a new timber building ahead. Immediately before reaching the building turn left off the path to follow a yellow marker post which leads down a wide farm track with Jubilee Groves plantings on either side of it (2). Proceed along this track until it bends to the g left - keep straight on here, following the yellow footpath marker post, to reach a metal swing gate. The spire of Normanton church will be visible ahead off you on vi the this stretch. Go through the swing gate, leaving Diamond Jubilee wood and follow the trackk across the field ahead.

Keep on easier to walk along until the track bends to the left – at this point look to your right and yyou will see a public footpath sign behind the hedge on your right (4). Access this via g and follow the footpath across a a gap in the hedge sm mall plank bridge g and into mature woodland. Th his pretty path is easy to follow and well-marked way through the woods before finally as it twists its wa eme erging across s a further plank bridge at the far e end. PET’S CORNER

What your rabbit needs to be happy and healthy Rabbits have specific needs if they’re to live happy and healthy lives. From clean living conditions to a nutritional diet, here are some of their basic, nonnegotiable requirements for health and happiness. Living quarters A spacious, safe and secure hutch with an attached and enclosed outdoor run allows your rabbit to get the exercise they need, as they love to run around and chew or play with toys. They require a safe, quiet and enclosed place to rest – this could be a separate ‘room’ within the hutch, or an area away from the main living quarters divided by hay or straw. Protection from extreme weather, and predators such as foxes or other pets in the area, is also important. Nutrition Rabbits need lots of fresh vegetables, particularly leafy greens, rabbit pellets, a little fruit, and plenty of hay to grind down their teeth. They also like to

eat grass, but not the clippings frrom your lawnmower – grass should be growing within theirr reach, or fre eshly picked in clu umps from the garden. A fresh supply of clean drinking water is essential, and in summer you’ll need to change it regularly so they don’t pick up any bacteria. Health checks Their nails and teeth need to be checked regularly to make sure they’re not too long, and also their tails and bottom area, particularly in the summer when fly strike is a huge danger. Having a vet check them at least annually is also essential for long-term health.

SWANNINGTON HERITAGE TRUST Gorse Field Harvest

There are many places where you can go and pick blackberries during August and September. But there aren’t many with such historic connections as the Gorse Field in Swannington. As you pick your blackberries you will walk past the hollows of the former bell pit and gin pits where miners, who worked so hard centuries ago went to mine coal. Astride the A512 Ashby to Loughborough Road there were an estimated 5,000 bell pits and gin pits. The Gorse Field is one of the few places where surface evidence remains. There are lots of elder shrubs on the Gorse Field. Visitors collect the elderflowers and berries for making drinks. The gorse bushes used to be harvested. Young gorse was chopped up, mixed with clay, then used as a waterproof daub to line mine shafts. This protected the shaft walls from the water that trickled down them. Gorse bushes were also harvested for communal ovens. Ovens were heated by lighting a fire within the oven then raking out the ash before placing the dough inside to bake. Gorse burnt hot and only left a little ash, so was ideal for the task.
