SPOTLIGHT ON...
Spotlight on AGE UK Each month we turn the spotlight on a local charity, tell you more about what they do and share details of upcoming fundraising events. This month we take a look at how volunteering your time rather than your cash could help others in our community….. As we grow old there are many challenges to face and these aren’t always limited to health issues. For example, loneliness is more common than you think for the elderly. “Currently, a million people over 65 feel lonely ‘often’ or ‘always’ and 3.7 million people live alone, many with no means of getting out and about.” (English Longitudinal Study on Ageing) Social isolation and loneliness affects a person’s quality of life. Life changing events such as becoming housebound, losing your carer or your partner, not having your family around you during the day or a change in your health and your ability to get out and about can disconnect you from the outside world and leave you feeling lonely. Often people do not want to ask for help but no one wants to be lonely every day. Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, working together with North West Leicestershire District Council offers a volunteer befriending service in North West Leicestershire aimed at tackling loneliness and providing much needed company and friendship for older people within our area. This works by matching an older person with a befriender who will visit or call on a regular basis to enjoy a chat, provide a listening ear or perhaps
provide support to get out and about in the local community. Initially as a volunteer it’s about finding out about your new friend, their interests and how you can best help them. All volunteer befrienders receive training and support. The befriending project not only tackles loneliness and isolation it can also act as a gateway to other services provided by Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland such as their local day care centres, their free information and advice team or local social opportunities, details of which the volunteer befriender can provide. Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland currently has a list of local elderly residents in North West Leicestershire seeking friendship and company. Just a few hours of your time each week could make a huge difference to somebody and make you a new friend. A current volunteer befriender sums up the benefit to him of his befriending role; “I have been visiting Jack for just over a year now. He just wants to see somebody for a coffee and a chat, I get a tremendous warm feeling from that experience.”
If you could be a friend to a local, older person and offer a regular visit to them please get in touch with Donna Watson, Befriending Co-ordinator at Coalville Library, High Street, Coalville. LE67 3EA. Call 01530 460 553 or 01530 833 000 or email donna.watson@ageukleics.org.uk You can also find out more online at www.ageukleics.org.uk 10

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the
highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,
Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A WALK IN THE FOREST
e The Battlefield Line
Bosworth to Shackerstone
No ow here’s a fun idea - this walk w is one way but don’t worry you won’t be stranded w ass The Battlefield Line offers ou the chance to hop on a yo stteam train and return to your start poin nt! You do need to ccheck www.b battlefieldline. co.uk before setting out to c find out which trains aare running and when. There appear to be services every weekend plus midweek during June and then more during the summ mer holidays. You’ll also need ticket money - it co ost us £6.50 for one adult, one dog. Be sure to ask for a one way ticket as it costs less than the standard re eturn. The walk follows the towpath of the Ashby canal from Market Bosworth to Shackerstone and taakes around 90 minutes. It’s all easy walking and transports you back in time to an age where walking was the main form of transport for many, narrowboats worked the canals and a train journey was a memorable day out!

2
Our walk starts from Market Boswortth Station, on the B585 just outside the village. The postcode for Sat Nav users is CV13 0PF. The statio on has a free car park.

After A parking at Market Bosworth B Station walk back up the driveway th hat takes you out on nto th he B585. Cross over the ro oad to reach the paveme ent and turn left. Waalk across the railway bridge and down to cross the e roundabout by Pip pistrelle Drive. Continue ahead over the canal bridge and then cross back to the other side of the road to access the track leading down

onto the canal towpath - this is marked by a smart black signpost. Turn left along the towpath to go back under the bridge, following the marker post in the direction of Congerstone. The path will briefly le ead you away from th he waterside as it go oes up to cross a new w bridge by Bosworth Maarina. After the bridge yo ou dro op back down and will now be walking alongside the e canal all the way until you arrive at Shackersttone. Canal bridges are all numbered - your start point was bridge 42 and you will remain on th he towpath h until you reach brid dge 52. At bridge 44 look out forr the sig gn about the Ashby Canal Site of Special Scientific Interestt which tells you about some of the e plant and animaal life in the area. There are several benches en rou ute which appear to have been donated by members of the Ashby Canal Society (many thanks to them, it’s a great idea) - bridges 46 or 47 are co onvenient spots for a break around the half-way mark. The sign by bridge 49 is a good er of the challenges faced by those living and d reminde working on the canal in years gone by (and still todaay, I guess!) - it made me smile, as did the floating g fuel station moored shortly before bridge 52.
4
When you reach bridge 52 the towpath will lead you up to the bridge as the path swaps to the other side of the canal here. Turn right over the bridge but instead of rejoining the towpath on the other side turn right again into the driveway that leads down to Shackerstone lk - now it iis time ti Station. This is the end of your walk to relax, and perhaps enjoy some refreshments, browse the gift shop or take a few pictures, before catching the train back to Market Bosworth station.

All walks are checked shortly before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE
10 minute Bingo Wing Toner One of the most complained about parts of the body is the back of the arms so thought I would write you a short program to help you tone them up. Before starting make sure you are warm and ready for action by going for a 6 minute walk or climbing the stairs for 6 minutes. All these exercises can be done in the comfort of your home: 1. Press Ups • Make sure you control the movement. • Lower your body to the floor, then push yourself back up. • Keep your core muscles tight. • Don’t let your hips sink as you lower yourself. • Avoid arching your upper back when pushing back up. • For an easier version, perform the press-up with your knees on the floor. • 10-15 reps. 2. Wall push ups • Your body should form a rigid plank from head to toe. • Bend your arms then push yourself away from the wall. • Control the movement.

3. Tricep Dips • Don’t thrust your hips up as you push back up. • Lower and lift yourself using your arms. • To make it easier, perform the exercise on the floor. • For more of a challenge, perform a bench dip with straight legs. • Control the movement. • 10-15 reps 4. Tricep kickbacks (with or without weights) • The elbow performing the kickback should stay raised during the exercise. • For more of a challenge, perform the kickback holding a weight (such as a dumbbell or a bottle of water). • 10-15 reps Mark Padgett www.mppersonaltraining.co.uk

IBSTOCK & BARLESTONE SURGERIES ERIES
Our Minibus service Twice a week on a Tuesday and Friday morning we hire the Ibstock Community College minibus to bring patients to our Ibstock surgery and take them home again afterwards. We employ our own friendly driver for this door to door service. The minibus can seat up to 16 people and it has a lift so that people in wheelchairs can use the bus. It’s also invaluable for those who can’t use the steps to get onto the bus. There is no particular criteria for the use of the bus but it is generally used by elderly patients who have no other means of getting to the surgery. If you or somebody you know can’t drive and you don’t have any buses near where you live, or perhaps due to a health issue you can’t walk as far as the bus stop you may well be eligible for the service. We will ask if you have friends or relatives to bring you but we understand sometimes this isn’t possible so in this case we may be able to
help. We always ask a few questions along the help lines above so we can make sure the people who need it most get to use it. These are some comments from users of the minibus: • The service is “Invaluable”. • “The best thing I’ve ever known” • “The new driver is really really helpful”. If you or somebody you know needs to use our minibus service please contact reception who’ll be happy to help. Call 01530 263 467.

MONEY MATTERS
If you fail to plan,
you are planning to fail
“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”, a brilliant quote by Benjamin Franklin. It is a phrase at the back of my mind used nearly every day, not just within my business. For example going away on holiday, we all write list of things to take, check list of things we need to do and then plan things we will be doing whilst away. But what I find is so many people I meet fail to plan their financial future. They seem to leave it to chance. WHY? I have yet to hear a logical response. The main ones are – “well I am not sure how things will pan out” – “I don’t have a crystal ball”. What shocks me is many of the people I meet are very successful in business or have successful careers, but for some reason they seem to leave their financial future security to chance. Why do they want to FAIL? Then I come across others who have a go at planning. They have a collection of spreadsheets, which they freely admit are hard to keep up to date. Fantastic they have made a start. The common issue I hear is – “but they are just numbers on a sheet – we really struggle to see what it looks like”. My clients are fortunate – they have access to some brilliant software which helps me help them plan. Then visually they can see how things look. This software helps me answer the THREE CORE QUESTIONS my clients regularly have in their minds 1. Will we be alright? 2. Have we enough money? (can we afford to do ….. ?) 3. What happens if? Question 2 comes in a variety of forms. For example, can we afford to retire? Will we have enough money in the future? Can we afford to do the things we want to do? 26
Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd With question 3 it is all about those what happens if? What happens if we have a serious health problem? What happens if we sell up and downsize? What happens if our money does not grow or we suffer a stock market disruption like in 2008? This sort of software helps people have a clearer picture of what their financial future could look like by putting into place some sort of strategy. Seeing how what they have already accumulated will work for them and how best they could improve things. It helps them visually see the plan, rather than a bunch of numbers on a spreadsheet. It’s a start which can then be regularly reviewed. Financial Planning for your future should not be about trying to work out which is the best pension or investment plan to buy. It should first of all be about understanding what you want for your future, then planning how best you can achieve the things you want, having contingencies just in case the “what if” happens, but ensuring you can afford to do the things you want to do. We suggest you ensure you use an adviser who adopts this approach, because if you do not plan, then you are planning to fail.

IN YOUR GARDEN
Sleepy gardens Some plants have properties which have been associated with assisting sleep for centuries. If the hot nights are disturbing you then a little plant planning could be the answer. In Tudor times sleep potions became fashionable, rather like the herbal teas and scented candles of today. The beautiful Tudor property, Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire, owned by the National Trust has this summer been featuring a part of the garden they call the ‘sleep bed’. In July and August this area of soporific plants have been flowering and looking very pretty, but it was set out for the purpose of showing the type of plants used for aiding sleep. Plants we know today such as Fennel, Camomile and Rose would be used in various infusions before bed time. Poppies and violets were grown not only for the flowers to look pretty but for the petals and seeds to be used in sleep remedies. In Tudor times a bed sprinkled with dry rose petles (an early form of potpourri) would be a welcome scent to mask unwashed bodies. Herbs such as Rosemary, Marjoram and Lavender would be burned to fumigate the room and ward off evil spirits. Lavender scent is well known for relaxation and has been proven to lower stress levels, heart rate

and blood pressure. Lavender is an outdoor plant but sprigs of Lavender brought into a room or a cushion of dried lavender in the bedroom is a useful way of using spent flowers. A young lavender plant could be placed in a window box for the first flowering season before moving it into the garden border. Another houseplant for bedrooms is Jasmine, which exudes a sweet scent from the pretty white flowers and it is a well known pant for essential oils in relaxation. The scent is said to reduce anxiety. The plant can be placed on a window sill and will do quite well if it is watered frequently in the flowering period but then topsoil should be allowed to dry out slightly when it is not in flower. Another plant for indoors is the Snake plant, also known as ‘Mother-in-Laws-Tongue’. It is said to remove harmful chemicals from the air which can come from products such as hairsprays. The Peace Lily is an indoor plant which is a good air cleaner too. It is also said to increase the humidity of a room and can aid breathing and help to combat dry skin and hair. The white flowers of this plant are beautiful and unique and it just needs watering once a week, so ideal if you are not that green fingered. Finally, Aloe Vera is a succulent plant and can look quite modern and contemporary in the home. The plant requires very little water and is extremely easy to look after. It produces oxygen at night and will improve the air quality in a room. For information about the sleep bed see www.nationaltrust.org.uk/little-moreton-hall Happy gardening!

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS
August Museum News The feedback regarding the recently published Past and Present has been marvellously positive. Articles include John Louch’s reminiscences about his father’s and grandfather’s Commercial School for Ashby young ladies. Two articles – on Rev. Coleman and Rev. Bate, respectively schoolmaster and vicar at Ashby, give details of their careers in the town. John MacDonald’s article on the Briggs brothers of Coleorton and Australia, deals with yet another family tragedy of the Great War. Finally, an article from Christina Backman on two of her fascinating ancestors, John and Henry Smith. The next exhibition in the Loudoun Gallery, from August 2nd to September 22nd, will be Ashby Childhoods: some memories of growing up in Ashby and its surrounding villages, from the 1890s to the 1990s. This will be illustrated with material from our archives. Ashby Museum will also once again be participating at Tractor Jim’s excellent event on the Bath Grounds on Sunday 30th July. We hope to see you there. We would be so pleased to have new volunteers to
help on the front desk for two hours once a fortnight. LEGAL TIPS
Myth Busting: Lasting Powers of Attorney Many people are unaware of how important Lasting Powers of Attorney are or have misconceptions about what they’re used for and how it relates to them. Lasting Powers of Attorney are arguably just as crucial as a will and with dementia becoming increasingly common, are becoming increasingly important. MYTH: Lasting Powers of Attorney are only for the elderly FALSE! They cover you for ‘loss of capacity’ which could be physical as well as mental. If you are unable to make decisions for yourself for any reason then they are applicable. MYTH: If I lost capacity my family would automatically take over FALSE! Unless you have already arranged Lasting Powers of Attorney then decisions will be made for you by the Court of Protection and fees are

chargeable for this. Your loved ones would have to apply for a Deputyship Order which is a costly and lengthy process. MYTH: If I complete it then my attorneys will take over even if I haven’t lost capacity yet! FALSE! You must be medically diagnosed as having lost capacity for them to take over or must have willingly decided you do not have capacity Sometimes making sure you have the right protection in place for your family is difficult and you’re unsure which way to turn. This is why we offer a free legacy planning review in order to give you an informed choice so you can make the right decision for you and your family. Help your community blossom with a Green Shoots Grant! The Green Shoots grant is available again this year allowing community groups to bring colour and life to North West Leicestershire and fill their streets with flowers. A range of bulbs is available such as narcissi, daffodils, crocus, tulips and bluebells. Groups match fund the amount granted to them by the council and then rally their army of volunteers to plant the bulbs. Community groups, organisations, and parish councils need to order a minimum of 2,000 bulbs, which can be a combination of different types of flower. This number of bulbs would cost approximately £100, with a further £100 of match funding provided by NWLDC.
Applications must be made by Friday 11th August and forms can be found at www.nwleics.gov.uk/green_shoots_grants Further information from grants@nwleicestershire.gov.uk

BOOK REVIEWS
Lazy Days
Whether you’re stretching out on a sun lounger, or just grabbing an hour’s peace and quiet in your garden, a good book is a summer essential in our opinion. Standard Deviation Katherine Heiny Graham’s second wife, Audra, is warm, sociable and always ready to throw herself headlong into any situation. The total opposite of his first wife, Elspeth, in fact. So when Elspeth unexpectedly comes back into Graham’s life, he finds himself wondering how on earth he could have fallen in love with two such different women, and whether he’s ended up with the right one. If you like quirky characters, wry humour and reflections on the absurdities of everyday life, this book is for you. Palace of Curiosities Rosie Garland Abel and Eve are not like other people. Abel’s body heals itself. He has no idea how old he is, but his fractured memories suggest he’s been alive for a very long time. Eve – the Lion Girl – is covered from head to toe in golden hair. Together they are the two main attractions in a show featuring extraordinary people. Set in Victorian England, this is a beautiful tale of humanity and what it means to be ‘different’ in a world that prizes convention. Reservoir 13 Jon McGregor A teenage girl goes missing while on holiday in an English village. Seasons come and go and life goes on, but the girl’s mysterious disappearance continues to affect village life. Some people dream of finding her alive, others of discovering her body. This is not a crime novel, more a glimpse into human nature. There are a lot of characters, and you get to know each one as they go about their daily lives. It’s a quiet book, but it certainly draws you in.
54
100% Real Sam Talbot If you’re looking for inspiration for healthy, tasty summer recipes, this book could be just what you need. While its focus is on clean eating, it’s not just about chia seeds and green tea. Recipes include White Fish Curry, Jerk Chicken, and Dark Chocolate Soufflé with Rum Cream. Recipes are accompanied by full page photos, and are, on the whole, easy to follow. From light lunches and snacks to dishes to impress friends, you’ll find yourself reaching for this cookery book time and time again. Once in a Blue Moon Lodge Lorna Landvik A warm, comfortable kind of story with great characters, first loves, old flames and family dynamics. Once in a Blue Moon Lodge follows a family over two decades – Nora, her mother Patty Jane and her grandmother Ione. It’s the sequel to Patty Jane’s House of Curl, but works as a stand-alone novel. There is a large cast of characters, and the timeline is hard to follow at times, as it jumps from past to present. Nevertheless, it’s a very enjoyable beach read. The Trouble with Goats and Sheep Joanna Cannon It’s 1976 and 10 year old Grace’s neighbour, Mrs Creasy, has gone missing. With her best friend Tilly in tow, Grace sets out to solve the mystery. It soon becomes apparent that the community is hiding plenty of secrets, some of which go back almost a decade. Grace comes across as rather naive for her age at times, but she’s very likeable. A funny, easy read that will make waiting around at a station or airport much more bearable.
