Keep Safe Club Leicestershire Police’s ‘Keep Safe Club’ is a new initiative which aims to introduce and reinforce key safety messages to primary school children aged 7 to 11 in a fun, interactive and age appropriate manner. The workshop is conducted by police officers and PCSOs in order to build a positive relationship with the police and increase understanding of what the police do. It aims to give the children the skills to report incidents with the knowledge that they will be taken seriously, and inspire confidence in their interactions with the police. We also explore what it means to be a good citizen by promoting positive behaviours in the community while developing an understanding of personal responsibility. We look at raising awareness of personal safety, including safer use of the internet. This is done alongside aiming to develop personal safety awareness giving the children confidence, and the

tools needed, to stay safe when presented with risky situations. The workshop requires around half a day and can be provided for a single class at a time or larger groups, such as a whole year group. We can also deliver to other youth groups that cover the same age range, such as Brownies and Cubs. It couldn’t be easier to register your interest in a workshop. ASHBY 20 ROAD RACE

Ashby 20... more than jusst a racce

Every spring the streets of Ashby are ignited with an influx of up to 1,500 excited runners who line up to complete a two lap run course which circuits around the local villages of Packington, Swepstone, Heather, Normington Le Heath finishing on Ashby bath grounds. The event which is ideally placed for pre spring marathon distance runners and in 2014 was voted March’s best race, now attracts casual and competitive runners alike from all across the country.

Ashby 20 was born in 1989 by Ivanhoe Runners club members Kevin Sanders, Bob White, Paul Enion and Peter Brown who were confident Ivanhoe could bring a competitive run event to Ashby. The course used to go up pistern hill but luckily for the runners a new route was devised in 2002. But what’s so special about Ashby 20 and why is this much more than just a run race? Ashby 20 is very much a community event. Over the past 5 years approximately £10,000 has been raised for local charities and organisations. The event has close links with Aldi who are the main sponsor. It also brings money to local business including shops, restaurants and hotels.

However, it does rely greatly on the support of Ivanhoe runners, town council, NWLDC leisure services, Rotary club of Ashby Castle, Ashby Endurance Explorer Scouts, Leicestershire Search and Rescue, Conkers Park Run and many more. Something the club is very grateful for. Ivanhoe runners are extremely proud of Ashby 20 but we are also extremely dedicated to improving the event year on year. We are working with the local community and villages to ensure things go as smoothly as possible. This year we are trying to organise a litter pick around the local villages prior to, in addition to, following the event. We are also exploring a children’s run on the bath ground to encourage e children to participate, have fun and get a sense of achievement. If you prefer faceto-face tuition, check out the courses offered by your local college. You could improve your computer skills, take up a new craft, or find out how to delve into your family history.

Enjoy time outdoors

Nature is good for you. It’s been proven to help with depression, anxiety, stress and a whole lot of other issues. It may even help you to live longer. We know the great British weather doesn’t always make it the most tempting prospect. But if the sun breaks through the clouds, wrap up warm, pull your wellies on and head for your nearest green space. You’ll likely find you feel calmer and happier as a result.

Take time to cook

Home cooked meals are usually much better for you than ready meals. They’re higher in vitamins and minerals, and lower in salt and sugar. So, try resolving to cook for yourself a few days a week. If you struggle to find the time, you could try a 16

box scheme. Simply Cook, for example, post you the herbs, seasonings and recipes to make simple (but delicious) meals in around 20 minutes. You just add four to six items of fresh food and follow the instructions. Hello Fresh go even further. They send you everything you need to make a meal, including simple-to-follow recipes.

Appreciate the little things

We’re often so busy; we don’t get time to really appreciate the little things in life. A soak in the bath, your favourite radio programme, a chat with an old friend… Taking a moment to be thankful can make us happier and calmer, and improve our relationships. You could try listing three things that you’re grateful for before you go to sleep each night, or keeping a daily gratitude journal. Or just try to give thanks to the people you love a bit more often. Whatever your New Year’s resolution, we wish you all the luck in keeping it.

As we face into a brand new year many of us are filled with hope and determination to make this New Year a better one, the year when we stick to our January resolutions and make lasting improvements to our lives. These goals can be related to any aspect of our physical and mental wellbeing – it could be as simple as vowing to keep in touch more regularly with friends and family, starting a new hobby or joining a new club or class. The most common goals by far are those related to health and in particular, increasing fitness levels and losing unwanted additional weight (especially after the excesses of the festive period). This month our local Health & Fitness expert; Mark Padgett of MP Personal Training tells us how big an impact it can make and how two of his clients are celebrating after transforming their lives for the better. After feeling unhappy with their weight for some time, Daryl Ryan and his partner Karl Morris decided it was time to make lifestyle changes. ‘My energy levels felt low and my clothes didn’t fit so well, leaving me feeling less than happy, it was time to do something about it,’ says Daryl. Together they decided to explore the best options in order to achieve their goals. New Carers Wellbeing Adviser clinic in the surgery There is lots of help and support for carers but it’s sometimes difficult to find and can be time consuming. Starting in the next month or so we will be having a Carer’s Wellbeing Adviser coming into the practice regularly. She will have appointments for carers to come and chat to her so that she can help them to get support and advise them on what’s available. She knows about financial help, support groups, respite care, and so on. Her appointments are an hour long so there’s plenty of time for discussion. If you would like an appointment with our Carers Wellbeing Adviser when her clinics start please let reception know so they can add you to the waiting list. Moira Furn nace A walk of around 45 to 60 mins, nearly all good firm m paths and taking in the En nnstone and Ashby Woulds Heritage Trails, Moira Furnace H and d partt of the Ashby Canal. This T is a greatt family walk with plenty of inte w eresting sights, s including the Lime Kilns, K Moira Furnace and the Bath Yard Basin and th B he lock that leads down tto it. If you wish to stop for refreshments en route you u can choose from either the National Forest Youth Hostel or The Hub cafĂŠ at Moira Furnace. To reach the start of the walk leave Ashby by Kilwardby Street and proceed straight on to Moira. Keep straight through Moira and follow the road round a sharp riigh ht bend before turning right after Via Devana to park at Conkers Waterside entrance. Posttcode is DE12 6BA.

Takke the path at the end of the car park towards the railway tun nnel, turning left to cross the mall Conkers railway line onto sm the e Ennstone Trail (1). Follow the track through the woods, be earing right to go under the raailway bridge (2). After the b bridge e the path goes uphill phill across a an ope en area. At the to top of the slope be ear left, following the Ashby Woulds Heritage sign towards Measham.

Carry straight on along the e Heritage Trail, passing by the Youtth Hostel on your right and then crosssing 2 road bridges. After the second ro oad bridge look out fo or a brown signpost on your left which po p oints towards Mo oira Furnace and Ashby C Caanal. Turn left to follow the sign down the ste eps. TTurn right at the bottom of th he steps, go throu ugh the gateway g (3), and then n tu urn im mme ediately left up a wide driveway. Follow the drive d past p a cottage on n your left and a then through h a metal g gate. Take the right fork aafter the gate tow wards the Lime L Kilns (4) an nd follow the path either way around the edge of the e kilns to go up and join th he towpath of the Ashby Caanal.

Turn left an nd follow the to owpath past Moira Furnace (5)) and then alon ng to the lock (6) where you will cro oss the main ro oad through Moira. Continue e along the towpath until you go o under the Marquis Bridge e (7) and arrive backk at Con nkers Watersside entrrance. Fighting the

Frosts

With frost, rain and perhaps even some snow, at this time of year our gardens can be in for quite a battering. Although most of your garden plants are probably fairly frost resistant, what can you do to minimise the damage to those which are not so hardy? It’s time to get outside and take some precautions. Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to freezing or frosting, and thin-walled containers pose the greatest threat. Where possible, plunge your pots by digging a hole in the soil and placing the plant in its pot into the hole. If it is too heavy to move then wrap it well in several layers of bubble wrap, polythene or old curtains, using lengths of hessian to create a more appealing outermost layer if the container is in a very prominent position. If very harsh weather is forecast or a spell of mild weather has promoted some soft, new growth, drape a double layer of horticultural fleece over the top growth of the plants and anchor it well. Alternatively, consider Easy Fleece Jackets: they come in three sizes and have a draw-string and toggle so that you can easily insert the plant and then secure it – find out more on my website www.pippagreenwood.com/products/protectyour-crops. A double fleece layer can be used on plants in beds and borders too, or to protect slightly tender wall shrubs. Much larger plants can be protected with a home-made ‘cage’ – wrap a framework of four stakes or sturdy canes with netting or chicken wire, then fill the central space around the plant with dry bracken, straw or leaves. Evergreens in containers and in open ground may suffer from drought as well as foliage or stem growth, so continue to water these, especially if they are in a sheltered spot or the weather has been dry. Although most fruit trees - like apples and pears, cherries and plums - are hardy, they are also prone to damage. The main risk is to newly opened blossom, though the buds themselves may be damaged too, with late frosts being the most harmful. If you are planting new fruit plants, it really pays to buy from a specialist nursery and to get late-flowering varieties, as they are less likely to be flowering when there is still a risk of frost. Finally, use fleece to cover any seeds already sown out of doors. A double layer of well-anchored fleece or a fleece-covered pull-out EasyTunnel is quick and easy to install, and will help to provide protection and that bit of extra warmth for germinating seeds and seedlings. If you are planning on sowing any early varieties of crops such as broad beans or lettuce, then I’d also suggest that you cover the soil before you sow. A layer of well-anchored polythene will keep off excess rain and allow a little warmth to build up, so when you sow the seeds they won’t suffer from excess sogginess and won’t get such a cold shock.

We do mount temporary exhibitions roughly every two months, covering a range of topics. The Museum is grateful for another Shire Grant from our County Council. This has enabled us to update our I.T. equipment, facilitating the smooth running of our archives department.

Many people find retirement to be more challenging than expected because so much of their social life was associated with their working environment and career. Retirement advice often suggests that we develop hobbies or do charitable work. Whilst that is sound counsel, many men miss the social interaction of likeminded business and professional colleagues and Probus helps to fill that gap. Ashby Probus, a club for retired men, has monthly lunch meetings at The Beeches pub in Ashby which includes talks given by members on any subject they wish or, alternatively, they may ask a friend or colleague to give a talk on their behalf. The subjects are varied and very wide ranging but always of great interest and have recently included the art of thatching, the early development of cable television and the good, the bad and the bizarre business practices in the hotel industry. Regular visits are also arranged, some of which include member’s partners, and have recently included a guided tour of Taylor’s Heritage Bell Foundry, the Jaguar car assembly line, the DHL Distribution Hub, a Gypsum Mine, the Derby City sewage treatment plant, a boat trip on the Trent and Mersey Canal and a theatre trip to

see Phantom of the Opera. In addition ladies lunches take place throughout the year. The club is not a fundraising charity and the primary objective is to provide a challenging social environment for recently retired men from business and professional backgrounds to make new friends and enjoy themselves. Time commitment is minimal with a monthly meeting and one optional social outing but each member is positively encouraged to take an active role in the running of the club where possible. This year’s president, Alan Ball, who has been a member for 11 years speaks highly of the many excellent friends in the area that he has made as a result of joining Probus. PEARS

lovely winter pudding Tastes just as delicious served warm or cold. Choose firm but ripe small pears, and use a vegetable peeler to scoop out the core from the base of each one. YOU WILL NEED l

450ml red wine (see Tip)

150g caster sugar

1 pared strip of lemon rind

1 cinnamon stick

2 whole cloves

8 small Conference pears

2tsp arrowroot

Softly whipped double cream or crĂ¨me fraiche, to serve

SERVES 4 Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling time

TOP TIP Choose a full-bodied red wine such as Merlot or Burg gundy. If you prefer, replace half of the red wine with clear apple juice or cranberry juice.

GET STARTED

1. Pour the wine into a large pan

and add the sugar, lemon rind, cinnamon stick and cloves. Heat gently, stirring occasionally until the sugar has dissolved.

2. Meanwhile, peel the pears, leaving

the stalks on. Gently lower the pears into the hot liquid. Cover and simmer for 35 to 40 minutes until the pears are tender.

3. Remove the pears with a slotted

spoon and set aside in a heatproof serving dish. Blend the arrowroot to a paste with 1tbsp cold water

and stir into the e poaching liquid d. Simmer gently for a further 5 minu utes, stirring, until syyrupy. Remove the lem mon rind and clovess from the syrup.

4. Pour the hot syyrup over

the pears and le eave for 30 minutes. Serve the pears and syrup, warm or cold, with a dollop of whipp ped double cream or crĂ¨me e fraiche.
