SCARECROW FESTIVAL

Heather Scarecrow Festival The hugely popular Heather Scarecrow Festival returns this year and will be running from 11 am on Sunday 30th July until 6pm on Sunday 6th August. For anybody who has not heard of the festival before, this is no ordinary scarecrow trail. Throughout the village of Heather the gardens are filled with scarecrows - some of celebrities, some of them topical, many of them cheerfully daft, and all competing for the votes of the people who come from miles around to see them. Having attended the festival last year I can highly recommend it as a great day out which the little ones will absolutely love. Grab your guide and make your way round spotting scarecrow after scarecrow – no two are the same and you don’t have to walk far to spot the next one. Don’t forget to vote for your favourite once you’ve seen them all. There will be ample free parking at Heather St John’s Football Club (LE67 2QJ). Admission is free and guides are available for £2 to help visitors find all the Scarecrows and vote for their favourite. More details can be found on their website www.heatherscarecrowfestival.com as well as on Facebook and Twitter. All money raised through the sale of Scarecrow Guides goes straight back into the village or donated to groups in, or associated with Heather. From the proceeds of last year’s festival donations were made to village groups such as the School & Pre-school, St John the Baptist Church and Heather St John’s Football Club for ongoing projects and equipment.

IN YOUR GARDEN

Slippery decks–no more! Natural wood is a beautiful material, but using it outside for a deck or a pathway is something I never suggest to clients. This is because timber decking is high maintenance, and usually becomes extremely slippery and hazardous, especially in icy conditions. There are thankfully many superb alternatives to wood in the form of composite materials. These products can be mistaken for real timber, and look fabulous. They are relatively maintenance free too. I recently designed a walkway and deck around a pond using composite boards, and chose a plank style which was heavily grained and appeared to be roughly sawn. The effect was of an old rustic board – without the warping! Often around ponds and areas of natural planting, the deep grain and dark colours can be in keeping with a rural location. There are colours available ranging from nearly black to a variety of browns and greys. The grain can be smooth, giving a modern and minimal effect, or alternatively an enhanced and deeper grain can appear quite traditional. To make these lookalike products realistic, actual real timbers are used to create the moulds for

the grain. Generally the decking comes in planks 200mm wide and lengths of 3600mm. Careful and elegant detailing is possible with bull-nose edging strips, most useful for steps and corners. I particularly like the option of flexible fascias, for creating curves on circular decks or as risers on curved steps. Most of these wood lookalike decking products contain no wood at all and are promoted as highly resistant to algae growth and have very good anti- slip properties. The downside is that they are an expensive material. Some companies offer a 25 year guarantee which is reassuring, particularly considering the financial outlay. There are other additional costs to be aware of. To ensure the warranty is effective, you may be required to use the manufacturer’s own products for the sub base and fixings. Installation details need to be studied as the product has to be handled and stored to the specification and laying guides. That said, these composite deck materials look beautiful in the right place, and are especially good in or next to water. Happy gardening!

SPOTLIGHT ON...

Heather Juniors Football Academy

Each month we turn the spotlight on a local charity and tell you more about the valuable work they do within our community. This month we take a closer look at Heather Junior Football Academy who are a registered charity providing local boys and girls aged between 4 and 9 years old with the opportunity to regularly meet and spend time together, keep fit and develop team skills.

All of the coaches at the academy are fully FA qualified and experienced in delivering enjoyable, structured sessions for children of this age group. They are part of Premier Sports which is the UK’s largest coaching company supporting both teachers and parents in helping kids to get active.

Sessions take place on the grass pitches of the football club and offer excellent facilities for children and parents with toilets and refreshments available. They provide a fantastic introduction to football and are a great confidence builder where children have the opportunity to make new friends outside of school.

Another parent James comments; “The Heather St. John’s F.C. junior football academy is an excellent way to introduce children to football. Both of my children have attended the academy and thoroughly enjoyed the high standard of coaching in a fun and positive environment. The academy is a perfect transition between an introduction to football and starting structured play in the Heather St. John’s Junior teams, a route both my children have taken.”

Heather Juniors currently have 15 teams ranging from U7’s – U17’s and also hold a number of fun social events throughout the year including Halloween and Christmas parties, Chocolate Bingo, Football Fun Days and an end of season Football Presentation. Amy, parent of a current team member agrees; “Heather Academy is a great place to send your children as their first experience of football. My son thoroughly enjoys the sessions and is utterly disappointed if he ever has to miss one...Sam and his assistants ensure that the activities are fun and engage all children which results in children returning week in week out.”

26

Find us online at www.whatsaround.co.uk

The sessions run every Saturday starting at 09:30am until 11:00am – no need to pre-book, just turn up on the day! Why not head down this weekend and let your kids give it a go.

For more info please email vicechairman.heatherjuniors@gmail.com or call Rachel Bird on 07917 654877 Registered Charity No. 1126735.

A WALK IN THE FOREST

Exploring

Beacon Hill

Th his walk is a little further out han usual but well worth the th trrip. Beacon Hill Country Park is a beautiful spot and there is lo ots to see and do on this walk m making it ideal for a family trip o En route you can spot the out. chainsaw carvings, explore the spookyy rhododendron labyrinth and look out fo for the alpacaas, cattle and sheep which graze the hillside. The paths are all good ws make it but be prepared for a bit of a climb - the view well worth the effort though. There is a charge fo or the car park which works on a ticket system with a machine to pay before leaving. It cost me ÂŁ3 for 2 hours parking - the walk takes a little under 90 minutes but you may well want to stay longer. There are plenty of good places to enjoy a picnic.

1

Beacon Hill Country Park is close to Woodhouse Eaves, just outside Loughborough. Our walk starts from the Upper Car Park (1) which is accessed from Beacon Road. For Sat Nav users, the postcode is LE12 8SP.

2

Leave the car park via the p the hillside taking you wide hard path that curves up u will soon arrive at a to the right of the beacon (2). You wooden barrier with a carving of a shepherd beside it. Turn left here and then follow the path through a small metal gate onto the hillsside. Leaving the gravel path bear right up the grasss to visit the trig point at the summit of the hill (3) and enjoy the far reaching views. Bear left to re-jo oin the gravel path and then stay on this path as itt takes you around the hillside. You will pass a sig gn telling you about the geology of the area and the en, as you drop back downhill, a wonderful caarving of a face. After a while a secon nd small metaal g gate will take you off the hillside and into a flatter, more woode ed area.

K Keep straig ght ahead, ignoring tw wo path hs off to your left leading to the Natural Play Area. On your right you will pass by Gerry’s Hut, the working area of the parks Artist in Residence, Peter Leadbeater. Soon the

Lower Car Park is visible ahead of you. Before reaching the car park there is an impressively large sculpture e of an axe man (4) - turn right by this sculpture, following ga green arrow for the labyrinth onto a grassy path uphill. At the top of this path turn left, again following a labyrinth arrow. Stay on this gravel path for a short distance and then, just before reacching the end of the path, turn right to access the labyrinth.

4

A spooky looking path along a boardwalk takes yo ou into the labyrinth - keep left where the path splits. Carry on around the lab byrinth (5) until you see a sm mall wooden gate through the bushes on your left. Tu urn leftt, go through the gaate and, leaving the labyrinth behind you, turn righ b ht along the gravel path. Thiss path p h curves around the opposite side of th he hill. Stay on o itt until you go th hroug gh a wide gateway in a dry s waall (6) wh herre the path stone enters e a more woo oded area. Immediately I afte er this gateway t turn right onto a narrow track t that leads up a slope with the dry sstone wall on your right. At the ttop of the slo ope you reach the same labyriinth signpost that you passed eaarlier, but from the oppositte direction this time. Turn lleft f (a (away ffrom the h labyrinth) along the hardcore path.

5

You will now follow this path for quitte some way. Re emain on it, ignoring a couple of paths off to the left, which lead back towards the road, and also a path off to the right just before the open hillside. Once the open hillside is on your right ke eep a look out for when the path starts to curve aroun nd the right and climb m mo ore steeply. At around this point you will see a small, but well defined, path leading w through the trees on your left. FFollow this path, with its clearly marked wooden edges, and after a short distance you w will emerge back into the Upper Car Park.

6

All walks are checked shortly before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS

July Museum News On June 27th we were delighted to welcome Glenfield U3A to the Museum. They were given a town history walk, lunch and a talk on Ashby as a Spa Town. We will be equally pleased to host any Ashby, or surrounding history group, for walks and talks tailored to their interest. More than 30 of our volunteers attended a coffee morning in May, when they were given a short presentation by the chairmen of the Trustees and Friends committee. Some lively discussion ensued and everyone had a great time. Why not come and join this wonderful group – you will be given a very warm welcome. Just come to the museum (Monday or Wednesday morning) or call 01530 560 090. Over the Whitsun Bank Holiday we were pleased to be included in the Ashby Arts Festival – Lesley Hextall’s photographs were highly commended. The 2017 edition of Ashby Past and Present is now available. Contributions this year include Louch’s Commercial School: Rev. W.H. Coleman, botanist,

geologist and schoolmaster: Rev. Thomas Bate and the Ashby Parish Library: The Briggs Brothers and two book reviews. The new temporary exhibition ‘The Past and Material Culture’ will run for the whole of June and July. HANDS ON ARCHAEOLOGY AT ASHBY MUSEUM is on Saturday 22nd July from 11am to 4pm have a go at excavating your own finds and making your own timelines. Create your own artwork inspired by the past and its peoples. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Friends of Ashby Museum Martin Vaughan’s illustrated talk in May on local wildlife photography was very well received and the Museum would like to thank all who attended.

BOOK REVIEWS

Summer Escapes

From future catastrophes to whole new worlds, this month’s reads are pure escapism. The Night Brother Rosie Garland Two souls – one body. Nineteenth century Manchester is home to Edie by day and Gnome by night. But as both start to resent the other’s presence, an internal war breaks out which threatens to tear them apart. Throw in suffragettes, love affairs and family dynamics, and you have a truly absorbing read. If you enjoyed Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, or anything by Angela Carter, this book is for you.

The Space Between the Stars Anne Corlett Jamie survives a virus that’s wiped out most of humanity. She’s on a planet far from home, and far from Daniel – the man she once loved. Together with the handful of other survivors she finds, Jamie sets out on the long journey across the stars back to Earth. If you’re not a scifi fan, don’t let that put you off. The Space Between the Stars is much more about human relationships and fragile societies than it is about space ships. This has summer bestseller written all over it.

Menagerie Rachel Vincent A travelling carnival has come to town, complete with its menagerie of fantastical beings. Delilah has always thought herself human, but her reaction at the exhibits’ treatment is anything but, and she is locked away and put on display herself. Delilah befriends her fellow captives, refuses to accept her slavery and forms an uneasy alliance with one of her ‘handlers’. But is escape really an option in a world where she has fewer rights than an animal? An easy, enjoyable read, perfect for the sun lounger.

Naondel Maria Turtschaninoff 19 year old Kariba falls for a powerhungry young man and reveals to him the secrets of her family’s spring: it can foretell the future and bestow health or harm. Once Iskan has harnessed the spring’s power, there is little anyone can do to stop him. He starts collecting women to his harem, treating them as little more than playthings. Naondel is told from the point of view of Kariba and the other women, over the span of several decades. Beautifully written, and at times quite harrowing, this will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

A Wizard of Earthsea Ursula K. Le Guin A boy wizard learning to control his powers, mystical lands, magical battles, dragons – this book has them all. First published in 1968, A Wizard of Earthsea tells the story of Ged – a boy who saves his village from attack and is sent to train to be a wizard. He learns to control his power, but accidently unleashes a shadow creature that nearly destroys him. Like Rowling, Tolkein and numerous other fantasy writers, Le Guin’s work will appeal to older children and adults alike.

44

The Girl of Ink and Stars Kiran Millwood Hargrave Isabella’s village is under the control of the ruthless Governor Adori, but the surrounding woods are under the control of a force even more dangerous. Isabella dreams of crossing the forest and charting the Forbidden Territories. A girl is found dead, and Isabella’s friend, Lupe, goes missing. With nothing to guide her but an ancient map, her beliefs, and her determination, Isabella sets out to rescue Lupe. This children’s book has gained rave reviews and while it lacks the depth needed to truly appeal to an adult audience, it’ll keep 9-12 year olds enthralled.

IBSTOCK & BARLESTONE SURGERIES New Pharmacist

Our new pharmacist Claire has started. She will be working alongside our other pharmacist Bhav calling patients to give them advice about medications particularly those on multiple medications. Bhav is also starting a clinic to review hypertensive patients and help them management their condition by optimising their medication.

Duty doctor

If our doctors’ appointments are all fully booked, but patients have an urgent need to speak to a doctor, our daily duty doctor will speak to these patients. They generally make an average of 95 calls to patients as well as calls to other parties such as district nurses, health visitors, social services and so on. On top of this they still have their daily paperwork: 50 to 60 prescription requests to check and authorise and clinic correspondence and test results to review. This is why there comes a point in the day where we have to limit calls, otherwise it just isn’t safe. Please respect our

receptionists when they say we are full today, so that we can ensure the duty doctor is available to deal with really urgent cases. Everyone here is working hard and we (as much as you) would like to employ more doctors and nurses but unfortunately our funding is not sufficient to do this. Therefore we continue to strive to provide all our patients with a caring service with the resources we have. Thanks for your support. The team at Ibstock & Barlestone Surgeries.

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Place the diced butternut squash, onion, garlic and oregano in a large roasting tin and drizzle over 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Transfer everything from the roasting tin (including any pan juices) to a food processor and process until smooth, adding a little hot water if needed to give the mixture a spreadable consistency. 3.
