BODY MATTERS
Strokes:
the importance of ACTION
Public Health England first launched the Act F.A.S.T campaign in 2009 and most of us are familiar with the associated TV and cinema advertisements. Some may find the images disturbing but the message they give is ‘The faster you act, the more of the person you save’. This is because early diagnosis and treatment may improve the chances of recovery and significantly reduce the resulting disability. Emergency services will treat a suspected stroke as a high priority. Don’t be tempted to wait to call for help because symptoms might clear and it’s just “a funny turn”. If you, or somebody you know, has had the signs of a stroke and they have come and gone away again it could have been a ‘mini stroke’ or TIA (transient ischaemic attack) If you suspect this has happened make an urgent appointment to see a doctor or visit a walk in centre because a TIA is a warning sign that needs investigation. Treatment may prevent a full stroke at a later date. Living a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk but unfortunately strokes do happen. Afterwards

there may be many ongoing symptoms, some of which are visible and obvious, some not so. As a result rehabilitation can be complicated, needing a specialist approach and achieving the best possible outcome can take a long time. COMPETITION TIME
Win a family ticket
to this year’s Ashby Show!!!! The Ashby Show at Cattows Farm in Heather is a key summer event for NW Leicestershire with crowds of thousands attending each year. The 2017 show on Sunday 9th July promises to offer as much entertainment, excitement and shopping as we have all come to expect. Back again by popular demand are the Bolddog Lings Motorcycle Display Team. Make sure you don’t miss these top-ranked freestyle motor-cross riders perform their amazing, heart-stopping tricks. Show times are 12.45pm and 4pm. Between displays you can meet the riders and get a closer look at the bikes. With livestock show classes for some of the best cattle, sheep and horses in the country, this traditional agricultural show links town and country. You can sample the region’s best food in the popular British Farm Produce marquee, see how farming has progressed through the years with the brilliant display of old vintage tractors and marvel at the massive machines used in farming today. The Greyfriars Accumulator Show Jumping class will bring the country’s best show jumpers along to compete for the £500 top prize. Competitors will race against the clock building up points for each jump they clear. If shopping is more your thing, then this is the place for you with over 200 trade exhibitors selling everything from the latest fashions, handbags, jewellery or something for the garden. Children will be entertained throughout the day by Punch & Judy, Stilt Walkers, Bouncy Castles and Go
Carts. Teenagers can have fun on the Bucking Bronco and see who can stay on the longest. Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on leads. Enter them in a class or two in the Fun Dog Show and perhaps go home with a rosette. There are plenty of tasty food outlets offering a wide range of meals and a beer tent for when you’ve earned a drink! The main sponsors of the show are local farmers, Livesey Bros from Packington, who grow exotic mushrooms and breed top class Hereford cattle. They will be selling their mouth-watering Hereford burgers and also showing their cattle at the show. The show opens at 8.30am until 6pm with all parking free. LOCAL BUSINESS NEWS
Massey’s celebrate their 70th birthday!! Massey’s DIY store in Swadlincote is celebrating 70 years in business this month so we thought it was the perfect time to share more of it’s history…… Founder; Reginald Massey was a painter and decorator and was repeatedly asked for small quantities of paint which, at the time, couldn’t be purchased. He began decanting paint into old treacle tins to sell and as a result, Masseys was born, with the initial store being founded in 1947 by Reg and his son, Brian on Swadlincote Road. During the 1970s, Brian’s two sons, Peter and Robert, joined the company. By 1987 it had outgrown the high street shop and so a new purpose built store was erected at 29 Swadlincote Road. Sadly, Brian passed away a few years later, but Peter and Robert continued to expand the business.
Masseys has been in Swadlincote since 1947 and prides itself on offering customers expert advice, product support and a great environment in which to shop. With the growth of the internet, prices have remained competitive in addition to a complete shopping experience that now features a cafe. After 70 years of trading, Masseys hope to remain a key part of the community for many years to come. Happy 70th birthday Masseys!
In 2012 it was again necessary to expand the store’s footprint. Peter’s son, Andrew, joined the business along with Robert’s daughter Jacqui and after two years of planning and building, the current store opened in Spring 2014.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS
June Museum News The Museum was delighted to welcome nearly 300 pupils and their staff from Littleover School, Derby. They seemed to enjoy and learn much from the illustrated talks we gave, which neatly complemented their visit to Ashby castle. We have just received from Vertigo, a supplier of museum exhibition material, a showcase which contains a collection of local traders’ tokens. These date from the mid-17th century to Co-Op tokens of the 1950s. The display has now been placed in the Zouche Gallery. Lesley Hextall’s photographic display in the Loudoun Gallery was deservedly well-received. The next temporary exhibition in June and July is entitled ‘The Past and Material Culture’ – a glimpse into the past through local archaeology. Our summer programme of evening town history walks begins on Wednesday June 7th. These are always very popular so it is advisable to book a place. Call in at the museum or telephone 01530 560090. Come and stroll round with our guides and learn more about Ashby’s fascinating history.
The cost is £4 and we leave from the museum at 7 p.m. The new edition of ‘Ashby Past and Present’ is also on sale in June. More details in the next issue. Friends of Ashby Museum Martin Vaughan’s talk on Wednesday 17th May, on local wildlife photography, was well attended. Look out for details of our next talk on Tollgate Brewery in September.

SPOTLIGHT ON...
T L C Breastfeeding support Free, friendly service to support new mums and families There are so many challenges facing new mums when their babies are first placed in their arms that it can all become overwhelming. For a lot of mums one of the key frustrations they face can be difficulties in breastfeeding when they expected the experience to be naturally easy and rewarding. As we all know there are endless sources of information and advice out there online whether it’s through websites, blogs or social media. Sometimes, however, just chatting face to face with another mum who has gone through the same thing is exactly what you need. Most issues can easily be solved with a small piece of friendly trained support. TLC Breastfeeding Support are a volunteer service covering Hinckley and North West Leicestershire. They have vast experience and training and offer peer supporting to mums to help them throughout their whole breastfeeding journey. They run a telephone and text facility, allowing a mum to easily contact them if they have a question or problem. Following their initial message, the team can then either help them over the phone or online, will visit mum in their home or maternity ward or forward them to one of their breastfeeding cafés, where mums can gain the confidence to feed in public, and not feel trapped at home. Sure Start Centres and Health Visitors use and promote the TLC service. Local breastfeeding support groups meet locally at Barney’s Playbarn in Coalville, Coalville Sure Start Children’s Centre on High Street, Coalville and Ashby’s Children Centre in Woodcote Primary School, Ashby. If you or a friend or family member are struggling then reach out to TLC today. 16

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE
Inspirational Health and Fitness Story
Alison decided to get back into her exercise regime 6 months after having surgery. She listened to her post-operative advice and eased into things, knowing that this would help the healing process both physically and emotionally. Prior to having her hysterectomy Alison had maintained a 6 stone weight loss and was aware of the challenges of managing her weight loss post surgery. It is generally said that weight gain can be a side effect after such an operation. As the weeks went by Alison found herself improving, both physically and emotionally. In fact, one year on, Alison is now feeling fitter and healthier than she has for years. Her weight is as she wants it to be and she is exercising more regularly than she ever did. Thanks for allowing us to share your story Alison, there are lots of people out there who it will inspire!

INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS
2017 key trend alert:
Travel-inspired trends
With warmer weather on the way, many of us are thinking about our summer holidays. So, let us use this as our inspiration to search out beautiful designs for your home. Many of the best interior designs draw inspiration from the four corners of the globe. Through travelling, we are able to experience different climates, culture and traditions. The exotic ‘Intrepid Explorer’ trend will be huge in 2017, bringing a sense of adventure into our homes to escape our chaotic urban lifestyles. The focus will be heavily traditional handicrafts, with a huge focus on the use of recycled materials such as wood, rattan, glass and textured fabrics. This theme allows you to create an eclectic display of sculpture, photos and treasured collections from your travels. To achieve an authentic look, try and stick with an earthy warm colour palette, such as terracotta, warm ochre and the natural tones. The focus is to let the furniture and soft furnishing do their work whilst the
Interior tips with FABCO in-store designer Eddie Ong colour scheme complements the whole design. When sourcing furniture items, look out for items made from ethically sourced, organic or recycled materials. Tribal print cushions and a pouffe, mixed with a textured sea grass, Kilim or oriental rug will instantly provide some key ingredients to this delicious look. Why not create your own large patchwork floor cushions using old fabrics and dress your room with different size lanterns, coloured glass bottles, and exotic house plants, such as cactus and ornaments from your travels? Finally, complete the design with some picture frames with photos from your holidays!

IN YOUR GARDEN
Wonderful Wisteria I am sure you will have noticed this beautiful flowering plant in the last few weeks over walls and pretty houses making a chocolate box scene of towns and villages. The flowering season is from April to June. The abundant white/purple/blue/ pink flowers hang magnificently giving off a heady sweet scent. These Wisteria in our gardens are either from China (Wisteria sinensis), or Japan (Wisteria floribunda). There is also a Native American variety but it is not as good as the Asian varieties and so it is not grown often. Despite its delicate beauty it is of course hardy, and as well as having interesting twining of stems in winter it has a lovely fresh green leaf every spring. Wisteria sinensis flowers before the leaves appear and the stems twine anticlockwise, whereas Wisteria floribunda has the leaves and flowers at the same time and the stems twist in a clockwise direction. Not only can this beautiful plant be grown as a climber across walls and over pergolas, it can be grown in a pot as a freestanding standard tree, with the help of a supportive frame. This is a great way of enjoying the benefits of Wisteria in a confined space. In fact, the finest example of Wisteria grown as a tree that I have seen is in the compact grounds of St Giles Church in central Norwich.

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 Wisteria will do very well on a sunny wall, but will tolerate some light shade. It is a deciduous climber which can spread in excess of 30 meters wide and 10 meters high. Your plant will require careful and regular pruning. Pruning is not complicated but just requires shortening new growth in July /August and also in January/ February. In summer all the pruning required is to cut back the new whippy growth to five or six leaves. This will control the size of the plant and stop it climbing into guttering and roofs. The winter pruning is just cutting back to two or tree buds to tidy the plant up whilst it is dormant. This twice yearly maintenance will improve the flower display. Take care not to prune in early or mid summer or you will reduce the flowering in the following year. Also remember to water in very dry spells as an especially dry summer may give fewer flowers the next year. In spring, Wisteria benefits from feeding with Growmore or Fish Blood and Bone, or a liquid tomato feed will do them good. Many Wisterias have the RHS award for garden merit and these are the most popular varieties: Wisteria brachybotrys ‘Shiro-kapitan’ which is white flowering. Wisteria brachybotrys ‘Showa-beni’ which is pink flowering. W ‘Burford’, which has lilac blue flowers on very long racemes of about 90cm. Wisteria ‘Caroline’, has blue/purple flowers. Happy gardening!
