Tree work
The branch system of a tree is known as the crown. Knowing this little fact can help you accurately explain the work you want carried out to a tree. Tree thinning reduces the density of the branches. Thinning the crown of a tree reduces the amount of foliage and lets more light into the canopy of the tree. Often crossing or rubbing branches, which can cause weakness, are removed to ensure long term health. Crown lifting refers to removing the lower branches to increase the clearance from the crown and the ground. Lifting the crown can make it easier to maintain the ground around a tree, or cut the grass for example. A crown reduction generally means changes to the overall size and shape of the tree. Reductions are usually around the outer part to maintain a balanced shape, this rarely means cutting through the main stem. A partial crown reduction may be

By Francesca Sinclair www.francescasinclair.co.uk useful to prevent branches touching roofs or the guttering of buildings. The terms above are useful for describing the tree work you want to carry out when applying to the Local Authority for permission. If you have a tree which has a Tree Preservation Order on it, or you are in a Conservation area, you have to apply for permission to do any tree work or to remove a tree. Note that if your trees are in a Conservation Area, you have to give notice for tree works if the trunk of the tree is more than 75mm when measured 1.5meters from the ground. Terms such as ‘’lop’’, ‘’trim ‘’ or ‘’cut back’’ are not sufficiently descriptive. As well as using the correct terminology such as crown thinning, it is usually necessary to give an indication of how much thinning is required by specifying a percentage, such as ‘no more than 30%’. If you are planning tree work then you will have to download an application form from the Local Authority and they will have 6 weeks to object to your proposals. This means that trees with amenity value and the local environment can be protected. Local tree surgeons and some garden designers can deal with applications for such work if you daunted by the prospect. If you are not sure if there is a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) then you can check with the Local Planning Department, as indeed you can also confirm whether the tree is in a Conservation Area. Happy gardening!

Get
fit and healthy for your summer holiday!
Now is the time of the year to get ready for that summer holiday you have planned and saved so hard for! Going to warmer climes means that your body will be more exposed and you want to look good!
6. Keep yourself hydrated as it helps your body to process food better and it keeps you well!
So, what is the best way to get that summer body? What action do you need to take?
7. Keep your core muscles strong. Have a go at the plank, holding it for 30 seconds then building up to 2-3 minutes.
1. Embark on an exercise regime but start gradually, maybe twice a week. Include a mixture of cardio, core, strength and endurance (weights) in a circuit format. 2. Get your mindset into positive and determined mode. Think about how much you want it and just do it. 3. Visualise yourself looking good on your holiday. This will strengthen your resolve and help you to attract the results you want. 4. Think about how and what you eat. Eat plenty of fruit and veg. Avoid junk food. 5. Eat little and often. MONEY MATTERS
Tips to tackle the
new tax year
Now we are in the new tax year we will see the introduction of the new Residential Nil Rate Band. This a new inheritance allowance for your residential home. The allowance will start at £100,000 and will increase each tax year to 2020/21 when the benefit will be £175,000. They state this benefit will then increase by Consumer Price Index from that point onwards. The objective is to reduce the burden of inheritance tax for most families by making it easier to pass on the family home. As for ISA’s the allowance for savings will increase to £20,000, quite an increase. Also we will see the introduction of the Lifetime ISA. It is a new savings scheme for 18 to 39 year olds to save and buy their first home or for their retirement. It can be either a cash or stocks and shares ISA. You can save up to £4,000 a year in the Lifetime ISA, (still part of the annual ISA allowance). The government will provide a 25% bonus on each year’s savings. But this comes with rules about accessing the money with potential penalties. The government’s view is the Lifetime ISA is either to help you buy a house or save for retirement. The Treasury are continuing to change pension rules. When I talk to clients they still find it quite confusing as to what they can do with their pensions when they come to retire. The points raised are not just about personal pensions, but also about occupational pensions. If you want some initial guidance you have the Pension Advisory Service or Pension Wise. You can find both options by searching online. But remember they offer guidance, not advice. When you want to take action then you may still need to use a financial adviser. The choice on how your take your income in retirement is a very important decision. Why? Well we are statistically living longer. If you want to understand this point more then I suggest you search the statement - “How long will my pension need to last?” – it will show an Office of National
28
Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd Statistic website – it states that for a male aged 65 today, the average life expectancy is 86, that person also has a 1 in 10 change of reaching 99 years of age. So your pension income may need to look after you for quite a few years. So your retirement income planning needs some serious thought. And being blunt, expert advice. This is especially the case with occupation pensions, especially if you are considering transferring them. At this time some of the transfer values look really attractive because of the fall in the yields used for calculating pensions. For the vast majority of people, it is not in their interest to transfer because of the inherent guarantees held within these sort of schemes and the benefits which can be passed on to your partners, the decision to transfer should not be taken lightly. It should be an informed decision. You will also need to understand not all financial advisers are qualified to give this advice and it is important you check with them first before acquiring their assistance. Do your research, but seek out expert independent financial advice. The content of this article was put together prior to the March budget based on the comments made in the Autumn Statement, fortunately the facts stated in the Autumn have been retained.

LEGAL TIPS
Lasting Powers of Attorney
The most important document you don’t know about This month we welcome back Felicity, Barrister Intermediary at The Profit Key here in Ashby. Felicity shares some invaluable legal advice on the importance of planning to protect your loved ones when they need it the most. When people think about ‘loss of capacity’ they think of dementia and ageing but loss of capacity simply means being unable to make decisions anymore, which can happen just as easily from an accident or serious illness. As a result, it’s something that should be taken seriously by people of all ages. Lasting Powers of Attorney come in two parts: health and financial. They are documents you register before anything happens so that people you trust can take over making decisions on your behalf immediately. Without this, your loved ones
would have to apply for a Deputyship Order which can take between 9-12 months and cost up to around £2,000. Until it was granted they wouldn’t be able to make any decisions, bank accounts are often frozen (even joint accounts) and a Court Deputy will be in charge. If you have a business it’s especially worth noting that your business account may be frozen and there could be major disruption caused by decisions being unable to be made on your behalf. Contact Felicity and the team at The Profit Key for a free review of your personal or business planning. Simply call 01530 416 555, visit www.theprofitkey.co.uk or see their full advert on pages 12 & 13.
PELENNA VALLEy WELSH MALE VOICE CHOIR ‘A Concert of Three Halves! At The Palace, ibstock
On Saturday, 3rd June, the world famous Pelenna Valley Welsh Male Voice Choir is to give a concert at The Palace, High Street, Ibstock. This is a very welcome return visit and will be the 7th concert that the choir have given in Ibstock. The choir was founded in 1980 in the small village of Tonmawr, resulting from a conversation at the local rugby club and have gone from strength to strength. They have appeared on the BBC’s ‘Song’s of Praise’ and have a long association with world renowned mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins, who grew up near to their home town. Anyone who has ever been to one of the Pelenna Valley Male Voice Choir’s concerts will know that they are unlike most concerts! For a start, they usually describe their concerts as having 3 halves! One ‘half’ before the interval and one ‘half’ after the interval followed by the third ‘half’ after ‘the concert’. This is an informal, and often impromptu, time of singing around the piano, when the choir take off their jackets and bowties and just sing for the love of singing.
Concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets: £10.00 from The Palace Tel: 01530 262400 or Halls, High Street, Ibstock, Tel: 01530 260460. Tickets can be purchased ‘on the door’ (subject to availability) Please check with ticket outlets to avoid disappointment.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS
Reminiscence Boxes We are delighted to be welcoming back Lesley Hextall for another photographic exhibition – her very first exhibition was staged at the Museum. This time she has entitled her work ‘A Mix of my Favourites: Photographs of Landscape and Nature’.
For the third year running we are playing host, over three days in early May, to 300 pupils from Littleover School, Derby. The days are shared between the Museum, where they will be given a talk on the Civil War and 17th century Ashby as part of the course they are studying, and Ashby Castle. The Museum has a collection of eight Reminiscence Boxes, full of real objects to handle, photographs and pictures, for loan. Each box is themed and, from feedback we have received, they have proved to be very helpful

in care homes, where the contents have provoked remembrances and encouraged conversation. Other organisations, such as clubs and Church groups, have borrowed boxes too.
On Thursday May 11th we are hosting a coffee morning for every volunteer who gives their time, in whatever capacity, to making the Museum such a vibrant asset to the town. The last one, held in November 2016, was very successful with over 40 in attendance. Friends of Ashby Museum On Wednesday May 17th at 2p.m. Martin Vaughan will present an illustrated talk on local wildlife photography. The cost is £3 a head, to include light refreshments. Our talks are always popular so please call the Museum, on 01530 560090, to reserve a place.

A WALK IN THE FOREST
New Lount
Nature Rese erve
Th his month’s walk is a short raamble around this really pretty area. This was the site of the fo former New Lount Colliery up to 1968 when it was restored with a vvariety of habitats being created including wetlan nd ponds, g dland. Later grassland and wood LLeicestershire County Council p in trails and a car paark. It acquired the site and put has since been managed by the Leics and Rutlland Wildlife Trust and is worth visiting at different tim mes of year as it is home to many different species of birds, plants, mammals and fungi which can be discovered as the seasons change. Reminders of the past are evident and for me this adds to the interest. The paths are well maintained but the wetlands can be muddy in places after wet weather, there is a short road section at the end of the walk. It’s a beautiful spot for a picnic and there are benches and tables place ed around the reserve.

SPOTLIGHT ON...
Charity Link
Join the team making strides to help local people in poverty Each month we turn the spotlight on a local charity as we tell you more about the invaluable work they do and how you can become involved and offer support. If you’re looking for a fun yet demanding way to help a local good cause then we have the perfect solution…. Charity Link, a charity which supports people in poverty, hardship or crisis throughout Leicestershire, is looking for individuals and teams of friends, family or work colleagues to join it for its ‘Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge’ on Sunday 24th September 2017.
Bawdon Lodge Farm, Nanpanton, and other support around the route. Registration costs £15 and challengers also raise extra funds. Due to the unique way in which Charity Link works, for every £10 raised it can provide £50 worth of essential items – so by taking part you really will be helping to improve the lives of the most vulnerable local people. To find out all the details visit and to register visit www.charity-link.org/leics3peaks.
The charity, which has been providing essential items, including food, clothing and beds to local people for over 140 years, has devised a unique 16 mile route which takes in the two highest peaks in Leicestershire - Bardon Hill and Beacon Hill. The third ‘peak’ is that of Old John Tower in Bradgate Park, where the challenge starts and finishes.
Charity Link also runs a range of other events and challenges throughout the year:
The challenge was launched by the charity in 2016 with 40 challengers taking part. After a successful inaugural event the charity hopes to double the number of participants this year.
Or for a rather more sedentary option you could consider their Annual Golf Day sponsored by Farmer & Carlisle. The event takes place on Friday 12th May 2017 at Beedles Lake Golf Course, East Goscote. It costs £250 per team of four which includes bacon rolls, green fees, two course lunch and awards See www.charity-link.org/ events
Challengers can choose to walk with the main group (the target is around seven hours) or for those looking for an extra challenge, runners are welcome to see if they can beat the Charity Link Leicestershire 3 Peaks Challenge record. There is a welcome pit stop at

SWANNINGTON HERITAGE TRUST
Charity Trustees and Volunteers Needed We are a 100% volunteer organisation with 15,000 people visiting our 10 acres of woodland and mill each year. Our Hough Mill Facebook page has 50,000 views a year and the website figure is even higher. The Archives team have processed hundreds of documents and photos, we publish historical research and run a wide range of events. So it is hardly surprising that we need lots of volunteers and a wide range of skills. We are particularly keen to recruit additional charity trustees, administrators, project leaders, historical researchers and people to help with our publicity. Our Volunteer Information Day is an informal opportunity to see our sites and chat with our existing
