TECHNOLOGY TIPS
How to avoid
Wireless Woes….
With an abundance of devices needing wireless connection to the internet, we find ourselves getting more and more frustrated with the performance and range of our wireless networks. Many routers provided by Internet Service Providers are adequate but by no means superb. However, many ISP’s prefer you to use their routers for convenience and support, so here are a few suggestions on how to improve your signal: Firstly, make sure your router is off the floor and ideally in the centre of the house, thus giving an improved coverage. Make sure there are no obstructions around the router, especially electronic devices, phones, microwaves etc, as these all have an ability to interfere with the signals.
Many standard routerrs use an automatic channel selection, but this can be unreliable at best. For those of you who are more “techno minded”, try a free Wifi Analyzer app which can tell you what channels other nearby routers are using. Then you can select a better channel which doesn’t clash if you know how to do that on your router. Whilst there have been many DIY methods including making a reflector out of tin foil to beam the signals, it is often easier to invest in a Wireless Extender or Repeater. The basic type simply take a good signal (say in another room in the house) and boost it. If the signal is rather poor, or you want a signal to be available a fair distance away from the router (say a summerhouse), you can use powerline kits. Powerlines are a brilliant bit of networking hardware, and so easy to install. You simply plug them into the mains and they communicate over your electric network, thus giving you endless possibilities. Wireless versions are also available offering you a reliable alternative to using plug in signal repeaters. To find out more about repeaters and powerline adapters, come in and see us for a friendly chat. We are sure to have a solution available for you at your local Which? MONEY MATTERS
Should I transfer my Final Salary Pension –
Yes or No?
In recent years, I have been asked this question quite often. When I come to answer it, you might think that I sound like a politician being interviewed by Jeremy Paxman – anything but a straight answer! However, being brutally honest, your circumstances are unique so a straight ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ is an unqualified flip of a coin. Giving up a very valuable guaranteed income for a seemingly generous cash lump sum is a big step, so my qualified position always starts from a “No” unless together, we can prove saying ‘Yes’ is more beneficial to you now and for the long term. So, what is a final salary pension? It is one which pays a retirement income based on a percentage of your final salary and length of service either at retirement, or at the date of leaving the company or the scheme closing (which is a common situation today). These pensions tend to offer inflation protection so you don’t lose out if you decide not to take your pension straightaway, plus dependent benefits. You will have many reasons you are now, quite rightly, considering your long term retirement strategy. For instance: The Chancellor’s introduction of ‘Pension Freedom’ in March 2014; very low interest rates increasing the transfer values; employers moving away from Final Salary schemes and understandable concern about high profile pension schemes been in deficit like BHS and Tata Steel reported earlier this year. It is very easy to accept a seemingly high cash transfer value offer. They have primarily risen due to falling interest rates and lower returns on government bonds, and when interest rates fall in this way, it becomes more expensive for companies to pay pensioners their incomes. BUT is it right for you? Your situation is unique, so you need advice based on your circumstances. It is vital to conduct a variety of stress tests. Look at various “what if” scenarios. Include all your other long term savings and assets, then establish what your best choice is for the future. Why? Because if you take the cash option, you

Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd cannot put the ‘genie back in the bottle’ - it cannot be reversed, so you need to know the facts unique to your situation and this could involve seemingly unconnected issues such as your state of health, tax implications, family and life aspirations. When taking expert financial advice it is become common place for a two stage process to be considered. Stage 1 – pay a fee for an Independent Financial Advisor (IFA) to assess your occupational scheme, complete the research and stress testing, consider the ‘what ifs’, considering your unique circumstances and objectives. If the answer is NO, retain the valuable benefits of your scheme. If the recommendation is YES, a further fee is charged to implement advice and transfer out of the scheme into a personal arrangement. Not all financial advisers can offer this type of advice. We are required to hold specialist qualifications, so do check when considering consulting an IFA - Only deal with companies authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority. You can check authorised companies by calling 0800 111 6768. It’s one of the most important decisions you’ll make this year, if not this decade. It can take many weeks or even months to collect the information needed to ensure the advice offered is appropriate to your situation. IBSTOCK & BARLESTONE SURGERIES
Doctor changes
We are sad that Dr Kay has left our practice to work fewer days at another practice as she has a young family. However we are really pleased to welcome back Dr Shuriah Barrett. Many of our patients will remember Dr Barrett because she trained with us. It’ll be a pleasure to have her back in the team. She’ll be working Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays for us.
Surgery Extension
We are delighted to let our patients know we are finally able to go ahead with our long awaited extension. At the moment the architects are finalising the plans and we should be submitting them for planning permission around the time you read this. We will be extending the surgery at the front to create a new light and airy reception with a separate area for answering the phones to help
22
with patient confidentiality. Then there will be a considerable amount of internal remodelling to create a number of new consulting rooms where the current reception and waiting area is along with a full minor operations suite where we will be able to perform minor procedures, many of which you would currently have to go to hospital for. Externally we will be adding more parking spaces at the rear of the building. We will keep you updated as the project moves on.
Flu vaccinations
Don’t delay, if you haven’t had your vaccination please book now. If our winter follows the pattern of the last one in Australia and New Zealand, we could well be in for a bad ‘flu season so please have your vaccination while there are stocks left.

IN YOUR GARDEN
Scented winter plants Tiny flowers can produce an explosion of winter scent. It is often the rather unassuming looking plants like Sarcococca confusa, a plain evergreen plant that over the winter will produce a mass of creamy white flowers. The smell is like sweet vanilla and it fills the air.
Similarly, the very pretty pink and heavily scented Daphne ‘Jacqueline Postill’ is one of the winter flowering varieties of Daphne, that will stop you in your tracks to search for the source of the heady perfume. Note that Daphne can be tricky in the local clay soils and so grit and soil improver is a good idea at the time of planting. Many plants that are usually discreetly in the background can be valuable at this time of year. A garden is not just about summer January and February highlights are equally as important to plan. There is a spicy scent from the frail yellow flowers of Hamamelis ‘mollis’, or Hamamelis ‘Wisley Supreme’ and ‘Jeremy Gold’ are also both very scented. The variety with a deep burnt orange flower is ‘Vesna’. Hamamelis are commonly known as witch hazel, but

some don’t have a scent so do look out for one that I have listed above. A sheltered place in the garden, one that you frequently walk past, is an excellent place to put your winter scented plants. Indeed a pergola or porch is perfect for the winter flowering honeysuckle, Lonicera ‘Winter Beauty’. This one has a stunning sweet smell from its flowers which can last from December to April. For me the star plant for winter scent is the Viburnham in the varieties V. ‘Charles Lamont’ and V. ‘Dawn’ which can flower from October to April. They are a welcome sight and smell. The tiny flowers are pink/white in clusters. In the bare winter this plant becomes a focal point. Some Viburnham can grow up to 3 meters high and so are useful shrubs, and they require little maintenance. For your winter scented pots, remember that some Crocus’s are scented and in particular, Crocus ‘Bowles’s White’ is excellent. It has pure white petals from yoke yellow centres and will start flowering in January. Similarly Iris unguicularis ‘Mary Bernard’ will flower in a large pot with gritty compost, or in well drained soil within a border, ideally facing some sun. They will come up every winter from November to February with fantastic purple flowers. I suggest a pot or two of these with scented crocus placed by a front door to encourage you into the cold outdoors. Happy gardening!

SPOTLIGHT ON...
Leicestershire and Rutland Blood Bikes Spotlight on
This month’s spotlight charity was brought to our attention by one of our regular advertisers; The Flooring & Bed Company who told us about all the wonderful work this charity carries out. As with all our local charities we’re sure you’ll be amazed to find out more about the tireless work carried out by their volunteers and the vital role they play in our community. Leicestershire and Rutland Blood Bikes (LRBB) are entirely run by volunteers with the aim of providing support to the local NHS and associated organisations in a variety of essential ways. This includes providing a free courier service for hospitals in Leicestershire and Rutland transporting blood, pathology samples, scans and other medical essentials. They also help with the transport of donated breast milk for premature babies at Birmingham Women’s Hospital in liaison with Midlands Milk Bank. In addition to this they will soon be delivering blood to the Leicestershire Air Ambulance base at Castle Donington. There are currently around 65 members in the charity including a Fleet Controller, Membership Secretary, Fundraising Co-ordinator and of course the team of Riders. As well as providing the essential courier services members have their work cut out building awareness of who they are and what they do, raising funds to cover the cost of the vehicles tax, insurance, fuel and service costs and of course recruiting new volunteers.

There are currently several roles available for volunteers, all vastly different yet equally important: Controller: The first point of contact for each job. They speak to the NHS, get the details of what needs to be moved, liaises with the riders and monitors the rider progress to ensure they are safe. Fundraiser: This may be standing in front of a supermarket shaking a money tin or giving a presentation talk to a group of scouts, rotary clubs or a school. It’s all vital in helping LRBB to deliver their service. Rider / Driver: The duty riders are the front line of blood biking. Riders are ‘on call’ for a shift (typically 7pm to 7am). Riders will be 25 years old and above and must have 2 years recent experience in handling and riding large motorcycles. They are usually active motorcyclists who will own and ride their own motorcycle. If you’re interested in any of these roles then simply email supporters@lrbloodbikes.org.uk
You can find out more information at www.lrbloodbikes and you can keep up to date with all their latest news on Facebook (LRBloodBikes) and Twitter (@LRBloodBikes). If you feel that you could help either through fundraising activities or sparing some time then you can also email enquiries@lrbloodbikes.org.uk
FABCO show their support for LRBB!! Local firm; The Flooring & Bed Company are keen advocates of Leicestershire Rutland Blood Bikes. As Tony explains; ‘We were first made aware of Leicestershire & Rutland Blood Bikes (LRBB) through a good customer of ours, Jonathan Bostock and his wife. They had had a personal close connection to the life-saving job that LRBB did after their first granddaughter was born prematurely and needed urgent life-saving blood products. Jonathan’s passion for their cause and his unwavering commitment really inspired us to help, and the rest they say is history!” The Flooring & Bed Company have made a lump-sum financial donation to help with the fabulous life-saving services that they provide throughout the Midlands area and beyond, as they rely solely on charitable donations and fund raising activities.
Tony went on to say; “It is our intention to make this worthwhile cause one of our Charities of the Year for 2018 and we hope the local communities will actively support both this charity and the events that we will be holding throughout 2018 in support of LRBB”.

SWANNINGTON HERITAGE TRUST
Califat Coal Mine - Cage Fatality 1863 There is a monthly excavation of the former Califat coal mine buildings which are on part of the Hough Mill site. As well as digging we have been researching the two fatal accidents that took place in 1863. The coal mine was owned by Benjamin Walker and William Worswick. The on site manager was Richard George Lewis. On the 29th May, William Walker, the engine man, went to collect a bucket from the pumping shaft. The foreman Robert Lakin operated the winding engine to bring some miners to the surface, but did not stop the engine soon enough. The cage broke when it hit the headstock pulley and the two miners fell out. William Clements clung on and was rescued. John Hutchinson was killed when he fell 130 yards to the bottom of the shaft. Witnesses were Levi Baker, the stoker, James Waring the colliery blacksmith and W Platts a banksman. The coroner’s jury comprised William Kidger senior and junior, Edward and Thomas Gough, George Jaques / Jaquiss, John Knight, James Kirby, Charles Mann, J Bott, W Hallam, J Henson and J K Mills.
If you are a descendant, have any information about any of the above or would like to help research local history, please get in touch with us.

LOCAL BUSINESS NEWS Terry Smith, owner of Smiths Butchers in Ibstock, finally hung up his apron after more than 48 years of service to the community. He was presented with a framed and engraved meat cleaver by Hannah Walters (actress and husband of local Hollywood Star Stephen Graham). The village turned out in force with about 40 people turning up to surprise him with his gift on Saturday 30th September along with close friends and family members.
Terry said, ‘’It’s been a big decision but at 64 I feel now is the time. My father told me to go out when you’re at the top and I think that’s where we are now’’. Terry is retiring to spend more time with his three grandchildren but states he will continue to make sausages for the family.
Terrys’ son David read out a speech: ‘’Ibstock may be losing a butchers, but it hasn’t lost the true gentleman that is my father. He has served the community for so long that he has seen everyone grow and become a part of his life. As a butchers, we’ve been here for over 60 years and my dad has been there for almost 50 of them. Smiths was the real focal point of Ibstock and my dad was more than just a butcher. He would happily talk with everyone about anything, delivered locally and did what he could for people who couldn’t get out of their houses’’

HEALTH AND FITNESS ADVICE
Make the Choice to look after your Health and Fitness It’s a constant battle in life between time and money, often leaving your health and fitness right down on your list of priorities. It often takes a health scare to motivate people to prioritise their health. Ask yourself the question would you neglect the ‘health’ of your car or your house and the answer is usually ‘no’ because these are so vital to living your life. Yet if your health got so bad you wouldn’t be in a position to look after your material items! You would often need to spend more hours on your material possessions, to make them ‘healthy,’ than you would need to spend on your own health and fitness, so why not put yourself out? Surely it’s better living a good quality life with minimal health issues, great energy levels, a proportionate physique, a positive and a healthy mind, to mention just a few of the benefits of exercise, rather than having pristine material possessions and money but no time or energy to enjoy them.
38
Why use food as entertainment and reward when it is there to fuel your body and make it function at its optimum level? You only need what you need, not what you want so why make yourself miserable by over indulging. Get the balance right use your time to look after your health and live a good quality life. You all have the power to look after your health and fitness.......so just do it before you wish you had!!

Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,
Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

BOOK REVIEWS
Gift Inspiration
Books make great gifts. If you’re stuck for inspiration or looking for some ideas for your own Christmas wish list, check out this month’s recommendations. For fans of Sarah Waters and Susanna Clarke:
The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock Imogen Hermes Gowar The year is 1785 and widower John Hancock finds himself the owner of what appears to be a dead mermaid. The artefact proves the talk of the town and gains John access to a whole new circle of society, a society that includes the alluring courtesan, Angelica Neal. 18th century London is brought vividly to life in this enchanting debut novel.
Love a good psychological thriller? Add this to your wish list:
The Stolen Child Sanjida Kay Without giving too much away, The Stolen Child centres around Zoe, Ollie and their daughter, Evie. Evie was adopted by the couple from birth, but starts to receive letters and gifts from a man claiming to be her father. A man who says he wants her back. Full of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
Enjoyed The Rosie Project and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time? Try…
The Seven Imperfect Rules of Elvira Carr Frances Maynard Elvira doesn’t see the world in quite the same way as most people. As a result, she lives a fairly sheltered life, caring for her overbearing mother and indulging her interest in biscuits. But then her mother has a stroke and Elvira has to find her own way in the world. With a great storyline, well-rounded characters and plenty of humour to boot, Frances Maynard’s debut novel is a triumph.

Love dystopian fiction such as The Hunger Games and Divergent? Try…
The Gender Game Bella Forrest In Violet Bates’s world, women rule. Men have few rights and boys can be sent away if they’re deemed capable of aggression. Across the river it’s another story – in Patrus men have the power. Violet is serving time in a detention facility when she’s offered the chance to have her slate wiped clean, in return for completing a mission in Patrus. An enjoyable, easy read.
If you like Neil Gaiman and Philip Pullman, try…
Hannah Green and Her Unfeasibly Mundane Existence Michael Marshall Smith Eleven year old Hannah Green finds the world isn’t quite as mundane as she thought, when it turns out her grandfather is in league with the devil. The world is out of kilter, and the unlikely trio have to work together to put things right. A thoroughly enjoyable read, with great descriptions, bags of humour and believable characters.
Fans of The Great British Bake Off will be clamouring for this one…
Nadiya’s British Food Adventure Nadiya Hussain As Nadiya says, British food today is a melting pot of cuisines from different cultures. This book reflects that, with twists to classic British dishes and more modern favourites. The book ties in with Nadiya’s latest TV series, so includes several of the dishes featured on the show. You’ll find recipes such as Minted Lamb and Apple Pasties, Mango and Passionfruit Jam Roly Poly and Masala Eggy Bread. Recipes are simple to follow, with attractive photographs and engaging introductions.

LOCAL BUSINESS NEWS
Brain exploding fun to help 10,000 young people! Brainiacs and businesses flocked to the 10th Sence Accounting annual charity quiz. Yet again, Sence brought together the local business community for a night of tantalising trivia all in aid of two special charities that support local people. The quiz which took place at Conkers attracted law firms, garden landscapers, consultants and hairdressers who all supported the evening entering teams and donating a glitzy array of prizes for a charity raffle. With a 100+ strong crowd, which is a record year for Sence’s quiz, over £3,000 was raised for Warning Zone and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance. The winning team was ‘Lush Landcapes’ from local business Lush Landscape & Garden Design Ltd. Anna Ball, Managing Director of Sence Accounting said “We enjoyed a fab evening all down to the generosity of local businesses pulling together in true community spirit. This year we chose to support Warning Zone who work to safeguard children and young people on-line and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance who save lives everyday. I’m so proud to lead the Sence
team in working with other local businesses like us to make this special evening happen and so successfully, so a huge thank you to everyone who supported, it’s a record year!” Richard Grudgings who represented charity Warning Zone said “Warning Zone supports all young children in our community and it is essential that locals know about us and understand the work we do, so the quiz is an excellent platform for us to spread the word.” For further information on the Sence Quiz, Anna Ball and Sence Accounting please contact Philip on 07903 516 069 or 07580 136 693 or email philip@kukucreative.co.uk

BOARD GAMES
Board Games are not just for Christmas! It’s Christmas Day and you’ve opened the pressies, eaten dinner and heard the Queen’s speech so now it must be time to break out one of those classic family board games. Most people will be familiar with old favourites such as Monopoly, Cluedo and Scrabble but have you ever heard of Small World, Carcassonne, Pandemic, Ticket to Ride, Catan, Exploding Kittens? Games such as these are currently surging in popularity with talented designers turning out innovative new games at an incredible rate. The games have hugely varied themes and a range of complexities with something for everyone and all ages. However, with thousands of new titles hitting the shelves each year, choosing the right ones can be daunting and this is where The Big Christmas Board Games Day at Ashby Library from 3pm on Saturday 25th November can help. Organised by local group Ashby Tabletop Gamers with support from Spirit Games of Burton upon
Trent, the day will give you access to a library of games to try with friendly help and advice available to new players. Spirit Games will be offering 10% off any game purchases on the day - so this is also the perfect opportunity to find those elusive surprise Christmas gifts and give a game they will play all year round. Entry is £2.50 with accompanied under 16s free. Proceeds of the event go to The Nagajuna Trust - a UK Registered Charity educating orphaned and destitute children in Nepal.

Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies present ‘Yule
Do!’ at Ibstock Palace
Folk songwriter Jez Lowe’s Christmas tours have become something of a tradition in his native North-East over the last 8 years, and indeed, across the country, as he sets off once more on a festive winter-tainment night of songs, banter and seasonal scrooge-like tomfoolery. Sit back and enjoy a night ‘snowed in’ with Jez Lowe (SONY Radio Academy Award Winner, 2015 Folk Awards Nominee) and his multi-talented band The Bad Pennies (featuring fiddle, Northumbrian Pipes, keyboards, guitar, bass, harmonica and voices) plus special guest folk balladeer and actor Benny Graham. As ever, Jez puts together an original take on Christmas; part folkconcert, part music-hall revue, with songs, humour and music. The Performance will take place on Saturday 2nd December as part of the Ibstock Palace Christmas Festival week. The doors and bar are open from 7.00pm and the concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £9.00 and £7.00 for concessions and are available from The Palace on 01530 262400 and Halls of Ibstock on 01530 260 460. ADVANCED BOOKING IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
