MANAGING EDITOR

A massive hello and welcome back to Sharron Livingston as our Editor once again, Sharron re-joins us just as our expansion for the future begins. We missed her and are absolutely delighted that she will be able to put her highly rated talents back into the magazine. Already Sharron has laid the law down and my space is now restricted! BUT I have to reproduce a photo that I took recently on a trip to the USA. There is no need for words to go with this, just a lesson to we Brits on how we should be treating our brave servicemen and women. Everywhere you go in the States, shops and restaurants have banners of support and offer discounts to service personel. I will always support service charities and hope that many others in this great country of ours will do too. We went to a sporting event while in the USA and an entire section of the stadium was reserved for service men and women, at the interval, the entire audience stood up to cheer and clap them and I am sure they appreciate the support that they get from their ‘fellow Americans’. It’s a shame we can’t do it here. Why? Are we embarrassed, is it political correctness, or are we scared to upset others who do not support?

I have always wanted to live around these parts. It is vibrant, fun and at the same time relaxed. I just adore being near the sea and a walk along Brighton pier is just as enjoyable now as it was when I visited as a child. And most of all, the residents are amazing - an eclectic mix of people that care about their town a lot and that makes it a very special place. I include in that our very own outspoken columnists - Mike Holland, Tim Loughton, MP and Mike Weatherley, MP. Whether you agree with them or not, their passion shows through. As for me, I am looking forward to starting afresh. Yet, building a new life is exciting, but also daunting. I am back in town and delighted to be working at What’s Happening again. And there’s so much still to do. For instance finding a place to set-down some roots is proving harder than I thought, so any estate agents out there may like to get in touch with some tips and advice. I’d like to know: is this a good time to buy locally or should I rent? Since I left last year, the magazine has gone from strength to strength and I am going to have to keep up. As a stamina-building exercise, our style guru Igor Srzic-Cartledge has offered to be my personal gym coach. “Down one dress-size in three months” is our mantra. If I achieve that, then we go shopping for a wardrobe chosen by the maestro himself. Well... I have to look the part, don’t I?

EXCLUSIVE! HARD HITTING ENTREPRENEUR

MIKE HOLLAND PULLS NO PUNCHES ONE MAN & HIS SOAP BOX

A

s we approach the first anniversary for our Green administration I must admit to being a little astonished that they have gone all out so quickly to annoy the electorate. Their opponents must be rubbing their hands with glee. They do not seem to have grasped that they were voted in because their supporters believed their very strong and effective campaign story. The Tories handed the election to them on a plate by being too complacent whilst Labour seemed uninterested and were simply sniping at their opponents. This was the background for what turned out to be the testing ground for the Green Party i.e. our beloved city of Brighton and Hove. As I have said many times in the past, I am only interested in seeing people elected who are of benefit to our city. By that I mean to the residents of our city to bring a better quality of life through services and promoting our city as a place to do business. We have shown that we can be a city of vision by being the first city in the UK to elect a Green council. Why not be a city who breaks away from old party politics that is failing in local government and promote the idea of electing a council of individuals who are in effect all independents without all this ridiculous party squabbling? Also there are way too many councillors. When has anyone known 52 people to agree on anything? Surely 20 would suffice and at least 50 per cent of those should have experience of running a business, not an honouree something or other. If one of the 20 messes up then a byelection can be called and a

replacement found within weeks. We are at a time of economic crisis of epic proportions unlike anything we have seen in our lifetime. There can be no doubt that this has been the run up to what threatens to be a really nasty time for all of us. What is needed in any business at times of crisis is a steady hand at the helm. The same goes for local government and with a city of 260,000 people it is necessary to ensure our leaders are there for us and every bit of help will be given that is humanly possible by those we trusted to elect. I have it on good authority that many of our shops are hanging-on by a thread and will undoubtedly fail in the next twelve months and there will be more in the following twelve. Instead of helping our hard pressed traders the current band of nobusiness background loonies are proposing parking price hikes of up to 170 per cent on parking meters, and approximate doubling of business and trader permit charges. Now does that make any sense at all? And is it time we asked these fruitcakes: “what do you think you are playing at?” I see that one of our local business people Elliott Ragio has an online petition running in The Evening Argus and I am pleased to see that the business community are at least fighting back. It is expensive enough to visit Brighton these days and our councillors need to be a bit more savvy. Even if they are all anti-car, it is important they wake up before it is too late as we need every pound that we can get spent in our shops. Shopping income is the life blood of our economy 170 per cent hike in parking and if we don't have rates is bad that we have very little for business

else. We have virtually stopped making anything locally and have gone for trendy which is great but trendy needs customers. Just wait dear Greens until we see some closures in the North Laines then, perhaps too late, the message will sink home.

D

aft idea number two must be the proposed rate rises for the entire population over the next three years. They turn the offer of government funding down which would have avoided this and instead opt, because of their own political ideals, to impose a reported 10 per cent hike on every household. Now is the time to tighten our belts just as in any business and I would urge our administration to think again and reassure the electorate that our city is in safe hands. Engage with the business community before it is too late. Why not do something really novel and appoint an advisory panel of proper local business people. I am amazed that David Cameron has not insisted all councils adopt this policy. I was told in the run-up to the last general election (by Mr Cameron when I met him) that this was one of the areas the Tories were looking at. Has this idea gone the way of so many others once a party gets into power.

H

aving announced the rate hike plans it seems our administration are now hell bent on rubbing salt into the wound by encouraging the travelling community and letting them know we are a soft touch. Why is an administration who were elected on the premise of protecting our environment talking about permanent sites and making wild statements such as that made by Cllr Exclusive photo’s Mike Mendoza

Pete West recently. Apparently Pete thinks that as Member for the Environment and Sustainability it is going to endear people to him to state: "Travellers are under pressure because there are less and less places for them to go." Then he goes on to say, "Some of them have got children in schools in Brighton and are no doubt coming back here to be with their families at Christmas." Pete wake up please! Go and learn about the travelling community. What we have in our city is not the indigenous population of travellers once happily known as gypsies, many of whom live on semipermanent or permanent sites in midSussex and would not be seen dead camping in a muddy field. I have met many of these people and believe me they laugh at the way we deal with the situation. Please do some research Pete and you will discover that anyone resembling a proper traveller is likely to be Irish. The reason is that a few years ago the Irish government brought in a law making it illegal to trespass on private land with a motor vehicle. That's why they are here Pete, because they were deemed to be a problem in their own country. If the Irish government can take that stance why on earth can't we? Apparently the council is "setting out its plans to boost the well-being of the travelling community as well as to tackle residents concerns." I would

suggest they have got that the wrong way round and should be addressing the concerns of the hard-pressed ratepayers before they worry about boosting the well-being of any transient community. Then of course we have the relatively new phenomenon of the can't-be-arsed-to-live-like-the-rest-ofus van-dweller that have appeared in our parks over the past decade. It is ridiculous that this is allowed. We are talking about a major problem and any other form of living accommodation would warrant an army of environmental health officers descending like hornets hell-bent on insisting on proper sanitation. Where on earth do they think that someone living in an old box van in the middle of a park is going to defecate?

S

till I expect in these straightened times there is the odd cyclist delighted to hear that there are more cycle lanes being installed in Old Shoreham Road. As a cyclist and a motorist I am horrified at the stupidity of whoever designed the cycle lanes in Grand Avenue and particularly The Drive. They are extremely dangerous for both the motorist and the cyclist and I fear Old Shoreham Road will be another such disaster. I would suggest to the current administration that they think again. If they have money to burn, freeze the council tax this year instead of making another mistake. Or do

something useful: take out that ridiculous fiasco in Grand Avenue and The Drive please. They poohpoohed that idea. I say to the Green administration: “If you want to be known as the party who installed a cycle lane then you are going the right way about it”. This is all complete madness and is no way to run a three-quarters of a billion pounds annual turnover business which is exactly what we have elected all these well-meaning people with no business background to do. We must insist as a community that at the very least if they are not going to include business people in their administration they do appoint a business advisory panel who they do actually listen to. What other business would expect to find nobody with any business experience at the helm? I rest my case. We welcome your views. Agree or Disagree? Let us know. What’s Happening HEALTH

12

Our alternative Health Guru MICHAEL VAN STRATEN shares his top health tips HEALTH JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR

goody? .....there’s a man in the house!

Prostate cancer does more harm than good. A large study of prostate cancer screening shows that the prostatespecific antigen (P.S.A.) blood test did not save lives, but it might be of benefit for those at very high risk. An article in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute reports that regular P.S.A. testing does not save lives and can lead to aggressive treatments that leave men impotent, incontinent or both. This test, often given to men from 50 on, can identify the presence of cancerous cells in the prostate, but the risk of dying of prostate cancer was the same whether the cancer was found by testing or because a man developed symptoms. The type of cancer usually found through screening is so slow-growing that it is unlikely to cause harm before the man dies of other causes. Overall the risks of P.S.A. testing outweigh any advantages and mass screening is probably not beneficial at all except in certain high risk groups. The most important thing is to see a doctor at the first sign of symptoms like having to pass urine several times a night; difficulty starting the flow or a constant dribble. The essential mineral Selenium has an important role in the health of the prostate gland as it is likely that men with the lowest levels of selenium have a higher risk of prostate cancer. Since the UK became part of the EU we no longer use selenium rich wheat from North

America for our bread flour, but have to use European flour that has very low levels of the mineral. The average British man gets less than half the required 50mcg of selenium from his daily diet, but this is easily corrected by eating a handful of Brazil nuts each day. Other good sources are shellfish, sardines, liver and kidneys. Goody? Goody? There’s a man in the house! So read the note stuck inside the toilet seat in the flat below mine, shared by five young women when we were all students. But be warned, leaving the loo seat up can be a serious health hazard as flushing without closing it could spread the current winter vomiting bug and other nasty infections. In a study by Professor Mark Wilcox at Leeds Teaching Hospital, he found that leaving the lid up when flushing lets a cloud of bacteria explode into the air and then settle on the cistern, floors and walls on each side of the loo. To make matters worse, they were still active an hour and a half later. If there is a lid, put it down before flushing and of course, wash your hands! Junk food diet linked to Alzheimer’s disease A junk food diet with a lot of trans fats may lead to brain shrinkage linked to Alzheimer’s, whilst consumption of foods rich in vitamins may protect against the illness, according to a newly published study. After many years of campaigning against junk foods it is great to see

yet another study that shows just how harmful they are. Dr Gene Bowman of Oregon Health & Science University has just published his research in the journal Neurology. Bowman found that older people with diets that included a lot of trans fats are more likely to show brain shrinkage associated with Alzheimer's disease than people who consume less of these arterydamaging fats. He and his colleagues also found that those with more vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids in their blood had less brain shrinkage and better mental performance. Trans fats are made by the hydrogenation of vegetable oils that makes them more solid and easy to use in food manufacture and food industry loves them because they extend the shelf life of their products. It is well known that these synthetic fats raise levels of LDL, (bad) cholesterol, reduce HDL, (good) cholesterol and so they are a major cause of heart disease – worse in fact than the saturated animal fats. Switzerland and some US cities like New York have banned their use in schools, restaurants and all state facilities. Surprise, surprise, the UK Government has failed to legislate, preferring to suggest voluntary action by industry. Obviously their fear of losing the support and cash donations of the food giants is greater than their responsibility for

FILO CAULIFLOWER TART WITH RED ONION AND MAPLE SYRUP It may sound just a little bizarre to add maple syrup to cauliflower, onion and goats’ cheese, then bake them all together in a filo pastry tart. Well I suppose it is. But this recipe from one of my elderly neighbours, here in deepest rural France actually came from her daughter. She lives in Canada now and enjoys the fusion of traditional French cooking with the flavours of her New World. This is simple, very tasty and takes no more than 40 minutes from start to eating. Use a deep flan tin or dish, 24 cms, 9.5 inches diameter Preheat the oven to 220°C, 425°F, gas mark 7 INGREDIENTS: 400 g 14 oz trimmed cauliflower 4 sheets of ready made filo pastry 4 flat, round goat’s cheeses 2 red onions 60ml/4 tbs maple syrup extra virgin olive oil salt and fresh ground black pepper METHOD: • Oil the sheets of filo one at a time • Place in a deep baking dish on top of each other, leaving the corners standing up. • Cut the cauliflower into small floret’s and cook in salted, boiling water for ten minutes, drain and cool a little. • Cut the cheeses into thin, round slices and cover the pastry with them • Sprinkle with half the finely sliced onions • Cover with the cauliflower, add the rest of the onions and season • Drizzle the maple syrup over the top • Put in hot oven for 15 minutes or till the tart starts to brown

their care of the people. Trans fats are bad for your heart and your brain, so avoid them at all costs. Read labels and reject any product that includes the terms “trans fats, hydrogenated fats or hydrogenated oils or partially hydrogenated oils.” Take care as they are everywhere from cakes and biscuits to soup powder, desserts and ready meals. I am pleased to say that most of the major retailers have been far more responsible and have removed trans fats from their own label goods. No trans fats in your diet also reduces your risk of dying from heart disease by 25%. Yet again the principle of Naturopaths like me and my colleagues has been proved 100% true – You are what you eat. So if you want to keep your brain sharp and stop it from shrinking, eat lots of oily fish, organic meat and poultry and plenty of fruit, veg and salads – it isn’t rocket science!

MICHAEL VAN STRATEN is an osteopath, naturopath, acupuncturist and nutritional consultant. He’s also one of the UK’s most respected medical authors, broadcasters and journalists and has written more than 50 books, which have sold over a million copies worldwide.

Although cauliflower doesn’t contain chlorophyll, unless you eat some of the tender protective green leaves, it’s an exceptionally healthy vegetable. It’s rich in cancer protective glucosilinates, antibacterial sulphur compounds and sulforaphane, a chemical released when the plant is chopped or chewed. This stimulates the liver to produce enzymes which kill off colon cancer cells and may even help prevent the spread of breast cancer cells. An average portion provides a day’s dose of vitamin C and substantial amounts of folic acid, fibre and vitamin B6, as well as a good supply of other vitamins and minerals.

The Money Guru How to get financially fit in 2012 Year-end tax planning tips With further tax increases likely on the horizon take a step back and look at how you could reduce your taxes and improve your financial planning strategy. The end of the current 2011/12 tax year is April 5th. Here is an overview of the key areas you may wish to consider: Make use of personal allowances Every person in the UK is allowed to earn a certain amount of money each year without paying income tax, known as a personal allowance. This tax year, the personal allowance is £7,475, with higher allowances available to those aged 65-74 (£9,940) and age 75 and over (£10,090). If you become 65 or 75 during the year to April 5th 2012, you are entitled to the full allowance for that age group. If you earn income above £100,000 you start to lose the personal allowance (at a rate of £1 for each £2 you earn above this limit). If you are married and one partner is not working, if appropriate, it could be beneficial to transfer savings accounts to them, so that you pay less income tax as a couple. If you don’t make use of your personal allowance in any tax year, you cannot carry it forward to the next year. Use your ISA allowance ISAs (Individual Savings Account) allow you to save taxefficient money. Within an ISA you pay no capital gains tax and no further tax on the income. You don’t even need to declare ISAs on your tax return. This tax year, you can invest up to £10,680 in a Stocks and Shares ISA or, invest up to £5,340 in a Cash ISA and the balance in a Stocks and Shares ISA. Any allowance not used by the April 5th deadline will be lost forever. The value of tax savings depends on your circumstances and tax rules can change. Top up your pension contributions The annual allowance for the tax year 2011/12 is £50,000, inclusive of your own contribution and any other amounts paid into an approved pension scheme. Contributions paid by you to a personal pension plan or a stakeholder pension scheme are made net of 20 per cent basic rate tax. This means that for every £100 you want to save, you pay only £80. Tax relief of £20, topping your contribution up to £100, is then added by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). If you are a 40 per cent higher rate tax payer, you may be able to claim additional tax relief. If you are a 50

per cent additional rate tax payer, you may be able to claim additional tax relief at your highest rate. Depending on how much you earn over the higher rate tax band, and your level of contribution, any additional rate tax relief would range between a further 1 per cent up to a maximum of 30 per cent. Plan for Inheritance Tax (IHT) Effective IHT planning could save your family hundreds of thousands of pounds. If you haven’t done anything about a potential IHT bill, now is the time to take action. Currently, IHT is charged at 40 per cent on anything you leave over £325,000 when you die (£650,000 for married couples or registered civil partnerships). With rising property prices in recent years, this has resulted in more people being subject to IHT. Start by writing a will, making it clear to whom you want to leave your money and possessions when you die. You may then want to try and minimise any potential IHT bill by giving regular small gifts away. Currently, you can give away a lump sum of up to £3,000 in each tax year without paying IHT – known as your ‘annual exemption’ – or £6,000 this year if you haven’t used last year’s allowance. You also have a ‘small gifts exemption’, which means that you can make small gifts of £250 each year free of IHT. There is no restriction on the number of small gifts but they must each be to separate individuals. You cannot use your annual exemption and your small gifts exemption together to give someone £3,250. Reduce capital gains tax (CGT) liability If you have made a taxable gain from the sale of property, shares, investments, businesses or any form of capital gain, make sure you don’t make unnecessary CGT payments. CGT is a tax charge that arises from the disposal of assets, such as shares or buy-to-let properties, charged at 18 per cent for lower and 28 per cent for higher rate tax payers. Every individual has an annual CGT-free allowance, which stands at £10,600 for the 2011/12 tax year. The limit applies to each individual, so if you are married or in a registered civil partnership you each have an annual exemption and should ensure that each of you maximises your CGT-free gains. There are different ways to reduce CGT bills, for example, equalisation or joint ownership of investments will transfer income to the lower-taxed one. This can be done CGT-free for married couples and

JASON FINCH

registered civil partnerships. By transferring an asset into joint names, you could both make use of your tax-free allowance so that up to £21,200 of any gain can be tax-free in the current tax year. But the transfer to your spouse or partner must be a genuine outright gift, so this might not be a suitable strategy for everyone. It may also be appropriate for some unmarried couples to equalise non-CGT assets such as bank accounts, which could mean that it becomes possible to equalise or transfer assets on whichever gains are less than their annual CGT exemption. Even if an asset is only put into joint ownership the day before it produces income – for example, through interest or a dividend – that income will still be split equally between both owners. If you immediately sell employee shares that you get through a Save-As-You-Earn share option scheme, company share option scheme or enterprise management incentive scheme, you may have a CGT bill. Consider selling in several tranches, so that each year’s gain is within your annual taxfree allowance. A Modern Day Hero

Dare-devil Peter hangs up his lifejacket for the last time After 43 years, award winning coxswain, Peter Huxtable, says an emotional goodbye to the Shoreham RNLI Lifeboat. During his years of service he has shown selfless dedication to the RNLI and helped to save hundreds of lives. In fact he has saved 449 lives during his service serving on both the all weather and inshore lifeboats. The former fisherman joined as a volunteer crew member at Shoreham lifeboat station 43 years ago. Born in London, he moved to Shoreham-by-Sea when he was aged eight. Having grown up by the sea he became a fisherman and was soon asked to join the lifeboat crew. In 1991 he became coxswain of the Shoreham lifeboat becoming the second longest serving coxswain in

the history of the station. In 2005 he was awarded an MBE for services to the RNLI. He has been awarded two RNLI vellums for helping to rescue the crew of the stricken Greek vessel, the Athina B, off Brighton in 1980 and as coxswain for saving the lives of two crew on board the yacht Trimley Maid, which was in trouble in gale force nine winds off the coast in June1999. Peter also worked tirelessly for three years to raise money and promote the £1 million community appeal to help build a new lifeboat station at Shoreham. He even took to the skies to publicise the appeal and wing walked his way into the record books by becoming the first ever RNLI coxswain to attempt the daring act in 2008.The biplane he was standing on flew directly over the lifeboat station at Shoreham, giving him a bird’s eye view of it and the seas he has navigated while rescuing those in trouble. In January 2009 he saw the old Shoreham lifeboat station on Kingston Beach, built in 1933, demolished and in September 2010 finally stepped into the new completed state-of-the-art lifeboat station.Three months later and having already seen action on three previous station lifeboats, he proudly brought the new £2.7million RNLI lifeboat Enid Collett, the only Tamarclass lifeboat on the south coast,

back to Shoreham and into her new boathouse. On his last official day of service the crew organised a final launch of the lifeboat and a surprise where he was winched off by the Solent Coastguard helicopter and put on the Newhaven lifeboat. A modest Peter said, “I couldn’t do my job as coxswain without the support of the lifeboat crew and my family. It is a team effort. “It has been a massive part of my life and I will miss it when the adrenaline kicks in and takes over on a shout, and you know you have been able to help someone in trouble and being part of a team.” Steve Smith, who joined as a crew member in 1999, is the new Shoreham lifeboat coxswain. The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates over 230 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and has more than 140 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and Government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 137,000 lives.

The Real MIKE HOLLAND

HUMANITARIAN AT HOME Mike Holland is a man known for his legendary work to save The British Engineerium, for his ‘saving’ Newlands School and for his wonderful work in restoring the stunning Stanmer House. Ask a local “who is Mike Holland?” and these things are what they will refer to. However, what people don’t know about this truly remarkable man is that he really is ‘One in a Million’ to so many people.

He is a modest man, in his 60’s, tall, quiet and charming but also a man of great, great stature, who has achieved phenomenal results for the benefit of others. One of his most recent achievements, in a charitable role, took place at the ‘Best of British’ event in Brighton last year. The event, which was organised by Ryan Heal, the Managing Director of JUICE 107.2, raised an astonishing £177,000. In less than 3 hours Mike, as Patron of Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice, asked businesses to pledge money to pay for a day’s care at this wonderful establishment. With each day’s care services costing £6,850, Mike persuaded 23 businesses to contribute to the benefit of the hospice. Since then, more local businesses have agreed to support this initiative and have ‘paid for a day’.

Life time giving is an important issue for me because I want to see where my hard-earned money is going and that it is put to good use.

Mike, who has been personally touched by the work of CTH and who wishes that a hospice like this had been there for him, when he lost his beloved son Brian, will lead the way for more businesses to get involved by generously paying for five days each year, on a date to coincide with Brian’s birthday. Ryan Heal, who was delighted to give Mike the opportunity to launch his ‘Pay for a Day’ scheme said, “This amount would not have been possible to raise without Mike’s inspirational delivery of his passionate story about the remarkable work of Chestnut Tree House”. Mike has a passion, whether it is Chestnut Tree House or The Whitehawk Inn, (of which Mike is also patron of their Appeal), he simply has a desire to help others less fortunate. As much as a cliché as that may sound, it cannot be argued that he does what he truly believes in and something he believes in is ‘Life Time Giving’. “I want to oversee the funds being invested and that is extremely difficult to do when you are dead! I want to see the joy on the people’s faces that I have helped rather than give that pleasure to my executors. There is absolutely no point in hoarding when in your 60’s and 70’s. If you calculate that there is enough money to keep you going in comfort to say, 150, then it’s a pretty safe bet it’s OK to start giving a bit away.” There is another side to Mike and that is when you hear him speak so protectively about his home town. He is not naturally a ‘ranter and raver’, but when his fellow Brightonians see this unassuming figure, they have little idea about how strongly he believes in their city and how tirelessly he works on their behalf. If that means he has to ‘rant and rave’ to get something done – then that is what he will do! Life as a Humanitarian isn’t easy; it takes passion, more than anything it also takes belief, dedication, wisdom, strength and the confidence to succeed – and doing all that for the benefit of others is a profoundly selfless thing to do. For every new idea Mike has, whether it’s to renovate an old building, buy a hotel, save a school – there is a charitable benefit hiding there somewhere. Unknown to most, Mike’s role has paid a service to people far and wide for many years.

Mike’s efforts and the example of his beliefs hold so strongly despite the hard work involved in implementing some of them. He is hugely responsible for closing the gap between the fortunate and the less fortunate. Follow Mike on Twitter: www.twitter.com/@RealMikeHolland

What’s Happening with TRAVEL TUCKER’S WORLD BBC TV travel show presenter

Sarah Tucker

Y

es I know the guy who bought the patent for the Segway died on one of them, but strictly speaking he didn’t die because of it, he died because he chose to drive one off a cliff – allegedly. But this hasn’t deterred the Segway phenomenon from spreading to cities around the world making city culture tours suddenly cool even for the hardto-please teenage market. With this in mind I took a three hour tour on one this Christmas Eve. Staying at the elegant, family run hotel of Bon Sol in Mallorca, where Errol Flynn frequented in his twilight years. And it was the owners Martin and Louise Xamenas who own this delight of a hotel, who recommended the Segway tours.

I was given five minutes to practice but most give you about 20 minutes which you won’t need as it’s easier than learning to ride a bike with stabilisers. “Whatever happens don’t stop”, shouted Victoria our guide as we headed up a steep hill. Segwaying through the streets of Palma, around the Es Baluard museum, past superlative Miro statues, up to the stunning Bellver Castle, the guide Victoria kept shouting, “keep going and don’t look back.” Then we headed along the coast admiring the views without getting weary or saddle sore. We covered in three hours what it would take a day to see on foot.

Sucker for the Segway

Touring the city of Palma for a few hours, I took in the major sites. Briefly stopping to skim stones on the beach, it was Christmas Eve. Of course not all cities have the winter weather of Mallorca, a winter destination even more than a summer one. www.segway.es Segway companies are now available in 20 cities around the world, including San Francisco where initially the up and down hill gradients may have made the option impractical. “The segway is able to deal with the gradient,” explains Victoria, “it is less practical with the crowds.” Perhaps this is why we have yet to have a segway tour in central London. However in other cities, tour operators are being quick to offer the option as a tour where practical, with the walking, cycling and riding tours of cities which are infused with culture but are tiring to navigate on foot. Virgin Experiences offer rally tours for those who’ve got the Segway bug around the UK, but for the rest of us novices, touring cities by Segway for a couple of hours will suffice.

“Whatever happens don’t stop.”

All culture, whatever your definition, has been made cool thanks to the Segway phenomenon and made the city tour sexier and more doable with the hard to please and travel with teenager who finds everything not connected to an ipad, iphone, itouch or ipod tedious and dull.

Five sexy Segway tours PARIS Avoid the crowds. This four hour tour covers all the major sites and gives you a break in between. Go in the Spring. www.viator.com BARCELONA The first company to offer Segway in the city is still the best taking you to the places the guide books cover and also those only the locals know about. www.barcelonasegwayglides .com VIENNA Visit the Imperial Palace, the Ring, the Opera House and City Hall, but also ask to see the Undertaker’s Museum and stay at the funky and eclectic 25 hour hotel which will top off the cool culture of a city that is in touch with it’s dark side. http://citysegwaytours.com SAN FRANCISCO This tour is for advanced Segwayers in a city that is up and down more than most. Covering Lombard Street, views of Alcatraz, Coit Tower and Transamerica Pyramid, only those who can deal with a 31.5% gradient should consider reaching these heights. http://citysegwaytours.com ROME A challenging city to cover on foot, far more doable and enjoyable on Segway. www.italysegwaytours.com

Igor SrzIc-cartledge Fashion & Beauty editor A smile that reveals a set of pearly white teeth is what everyone wants and the popularity of make-over shows has raised the profile of cosmetic dentistry. • Before embarking on any trip find out about qualifications and speak to the practice before you even consider going ahead. A good practice should be able to put you in touch with former patients happy to talk to you. Ask to see before and after pictures. • Check on other costs, such as consultation fees. • Make sure you have a full check-up before undertaking any treatment. • For a veneer or bleaching, a good dentist should complement the shade with your skin tone using a colour chart. • Ensure you allow enough time for treatment. Having treatment within the early part of the holiday will allow you to have a consultation before flying back and ensure there is enough time for any further minor treament if required. • Ensure that the dentist gives you a full report on the dental treatment carried out. • Do have a look at the clinic before being treated, it is important that you feel comfortable before proceeding with the treatment. What’s Happening with TRAVEL

Leap for

Each leap year brings us more than just an extra day. Traditionally, February 29th is the only day a woman is allowed to propose to her beau and as it only happens once every four years, you may want to grab the opportunity. But where and how? Sharron Livingston suggests where’s best to pop the question: CELEBRATE LOVE UNDER THE HEAVENS – ABISKO, SWEDEN In the silence of Lapland under a blanket of stars, profess your love and, if fate is on your side, be bathed in the glow of the Aurora Borealis. Its unique microclimate means the skies are almost always cloud-free in the Abisko National Park, creating the perfect environmental conditions for witnessing the Aurora. The raised viewing platforms of the Abisko Sky Station are ideally placed to let couples gaze out at the universe and watch the world go by as they plan their future together. Three nights’ B&B in Kiruna and an evening’s trip to Abisko cost from £1,030 pp (two sharing), including flights (Heathrow) and private transfers. Sunvil Discovery, www.sunvil.co.uk.

SAIL AWAY ON A PRIVATE YACHT TENERIFE & LA GOMERA Los Gigantes Bay on Tenerife is perfect for popping the question. Located on the island’s west coast, it’s a spectacular setting with 600 metre-high cliffs which drop dramatically into the water. Admire the cliffs from the seclusion of your anchorage, before going ashore for a delicious feast of tapas and wine. Arriving February 25th, a week costs £1,850 pp (two sharing – private charter) including half-board accommodation, private transfers, four dinners and drinks with meals. Flights extra. Essential Sailing, www.essentialsailing.com.

THE WELL-BELOVED PROPOSAL IN DORSET What better-named, better-placed property for a marriage proposal than The WellBeloved? A stylish little one-bedroom quarryman’s cottage on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, it has a warming wood-burner, a romantic roll-top bath, a second-floor snug, a sea view and exhilarating strolls aplenty. Plus, there’s Michelin-starred Perry’s Restaurant just across the water which Bill Bryson referred to as ‘cheerful and a joy to the spirits’ in his Notes from a Small Island.

A five-night stay arriving Saturday 25th February costs £110 pp (two sharing). Classic Cottages, www.classic.co.uk.

DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND - BOTSWANA This country is a major diamond producer so if you propose there, you might end up with both a fiancee and a fancy ring. Camps in the Okavango Delta don’t get much more romantic than Jao Camp – a remote, ultra-luxury island retreat in one of the lushest areas. Each of its nine rooms has its

own outdoor ‘sala’ – an open-air bed under a roof –perfect for lazy, private afternoons. Otherwise there are boat safaris and fine massage therapies available to suit your mood. An eight-night itinerary with three nights at Jao Camp costs from £6,518pp (two sharing) including flights (London), transfers, full-board and safari activities. Expert Africa, www.expertafrica.com.

ASK THE TRAVEL CLINIC Q: My son plans to back pack around South East Asia for 2 months, should he have the rabies vaccine? A: Yes we would definitely recommend a course of rabies vaccine. Rabies is spread through a bite, scratch or a lick on broken skin from an infected animal. It is estimated that there are between 50,000 and 60,000 deaths from rabies worldwide each year. Over half these deaths occur in South East Asia and rabies is almost always fatal. If you do not have pre-exposure rabies vaccine before you travel you would require a treatment called rabies immune globulin (RIG). This must be administered within 24 hours following a bite/lick/scratch from a potentially infected animal. Human RIG is manufactured from the blood of immunized volunteers. Receiving any blood product abroad is never recommended unless you can be certain it has been screened for blood borne diseases such as H.I.V. RIG is not always available in many developing countries. Having three doses of rabies vaccine pre-travel eliminates the need for RIG and primes your immune system so that treatment after exposure would be successful. If you are travelling to a rabies endemic country for 4 weeks or more, or likely to be more than 24 hours away from good medical facilities and a reliable source of RIG, you should consider getting a course of rabies before you travel. The vaccine is given on days 0, 7 and 21 or 28. To book an appointment at Sussex Travel Clinic call 01273 749100 or book ONLINE www.sussextravelclinic.com

Betty ’s word s of w isdom or maybe it’s an Ed itorial ............ There are vices, and there are secret vices – some fairly innocent, others leaning towards the naughty side of life. In the innocent category – and, incidentally, one of my favourites – is reading menus. I don’t just confine this to menus we’re handed at a restaurant table, either. I’ve been known to pause in the street and scrutinise the details of every single course displayed outside the restaurant, too. Why? It’s simple – I just love the details of those delicious dishes, with accompanying sauces, and all the scrumptious little extras, beautifully described. And if you’re actually sitting at the table deciding what to have, that’s when the whole experience goes up a notch. There’s usually so much to choose from, and so many decisions to make in a matter of moments, it’s all rather a dizzying prospect. Should I have a

starter and a main course? The starters look wonderful, but if I decide to choose one, I could be missing out on something equally gorgeous. Or perhaps I should skip starters altogether, because the puddings look amazing – and there’s nothing as comforting as the Great British Pud, especially in this chilly weather. If, like me, you’re a bit of a secret foodie, why not have some fun with the terrific menu pages we’re featuring right here in Silver Pride? You can do this without feeling guilty, and without leaving your comfy armchair. Sussex Farmhouse Meals have a selection of traditional dishes guaranteed to make your mouth water, and you’ll have lots of fun choosing your favourites. It’s time to indulge yourself by taking a leisurely glance at pages 37 to 40, where you’ll find some of the very best main

courses and desserts, all made from super-fresh ingredients and delivered to your door with no hassle. With five meals for £15, plus a special readers’ voucher for £5 discount, it’s easy to see what good value they are too. You’ll need plenty of fuel to stay warm and healthy this winter, and I’m not just talking gas and electricity. A good hot lunch is a must – so tuck in and enjoy! An interesting article arrived from the Labour Party about councils and the rise in cost of food, transport and daily care for the elderly living at home. Surely it was exactly the same and at times worse under a Labour Government? Then... the Conservatives said exactly the same things! See you next month.

Betty

Elderly hit with stealth fee rise on home care costs New figures published by Labour have revealed that councils have raised the cost of food, transport and daily care for elderly people living at home. The average price of a meal rose from £3.17 last year to £3.44, while transport fees rocketed 33 per cent and home care costs rose from £13.05 an hour to £13.40.

home care a week is now over £7,000 a year. The figures also revealed that around 15 per cent of the elderly and disabled have lost access to free services, while seven in 10 councils only offer aid to those in "substantial" or "critical need", means-testing free assistance.

Fees varied around the country with some councils like Surrey or Cheshire East charging over £20 an hour for home care that would be free of charge in Tower Hamlets.

Liz Kendall MP, Shadow Minister for Care and Older People, said: "These increases in home care charges for older and disabled people are a stealth tax on the most vulnerable people in society.

This fee rise means that the average yearly cost for an older or disabled person who pays for ten hours of

"More people are having to pay more for vital services such as help getting up, washed and dressed, meals on

wheels, and transport to day centres. “These services are a lifeline for older and disabled people and are crucial in helping them live independently in their own homes. "And the huge variations in the costs of care across the country mean elderly and disabled people face a post-code lottery, through no fault of their own. "The Government is out of touch with the growing crisis in care. Their brutal cuts to funding for local council services for older people are pushing up charges and placing an even greater burden on the people who most need help."

Fed up with counting sheep? Lying awake in the wee small hours is no-one’s idea of fun. If you regularly have trouble dropping off, you’re not alone. Insomnia affects about one in three of us at some point in our lives, and it’s characterised by the following symptoms: • finding it hard to get to sleep • waking up often during the night and having trouble getting back to sleep • waking up too early in the morning • feeling tired on waking Acute insomnia is usually the result of a stressful situation, something that’s niggling away at you and preventing you getting off to sleep. We’ve all experienced this from time to time. But those suffering from chronic insomnia – night after night of broken or poor sleep – have a much larger problem to contend with, and it’s one which increases as we get older. In the past, doctors often prescribed a sedative to help sufferers get some sleep, but that isn’t always the case today. Researchers and doctors are learning more about the problem and there are several remedies you can try for yourself before resorting to medication. Go to bed only when you’re sleepy. As you grow older your body needs less sleep, so don’t waste time lying in bed and

worrying. If you can’t fall asleep within 15 minutes or so, get up and do something pleasant but monotonous – knitting or doing a puzzle. When you feel drowsy, go back to bed. Avoid stimulants after twilight. Coffee, colas and even chocolate contain caffeine, which can and will keep you awake – so don’t have any of these after about 4pm. Don’t smoke either as nicotine is also a stimulant. Eat a light snack before bedtime. Bread and fruit will do nicely and so will a glass of warm milk. Avoid sugary foods like biscuits or sweetened cereal and be sensible about the amount you drink before bedtime. If you swallow lots of fluid just before going to bed, you’ll probably find yourself needing the loo in the middle of the night. Have a warm bath. If you do this about four hours before bedtime your temperature will rise. Then as it begins to drop you’ll feel sleepy – at an ideal time to hit the sack. If your doctor has prescribed sleeping tablets, you’ve probably been advised not to use them for long periods. You’re much less likely to become dependent on them if you take a tablet on alternate nights, rather than every night. And sometimes just having a tablet on your bedside table ready to take if the need arises can be enough to reassure and relax you.

I happen to know a lot about Viagra. I have registered two medicines for Erectile Dysfunction, done research on Premature Ejaculation, and indeed, reviewed 30,000 ECG’s, which are electrical recordings from the heart; to ascertain the true risk of Viagra to patients with cardiac disease. We did so much work on sexual health medicines, that my company had a special department that we called the “Below the Belt” division.

One of the other things that the Below the Belt Department worked on was the class of anti-depressants known as SSRI’s, (Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors) such as Prozac and Seroxat (whose real names are Fluoxetine and Paroxetine); there are many others. The reason why they fell within this category were, because they prevent orgasms in many people, delay orgasms in almost all men and women and are used by specialists as a cure for premature ejaculation.

We also registered antibiotics for Gonorrhea and Chlamydia as well as NSU (Non Specific Urethritis) and many other “down below” infections.

I also meet these medicines a lot in my Forensic Medical Practice and in my court work as they alter behaviour, cause aggression, and may

Your questions answered:

Professional, be that GP or Obstetrician (that is the doctor in charge of your wife and her pregnancy). Midwives may know the answer, however, because the substances have been in the news regarding their safety or otherwise during pregnancy. Doctors believe that the overall risk of birth defects and other problems for you and your unborn baby are rare and the risk low. However, some anti-depressants have been associated with health problems in babies. In general, the risk-benefit ratio of Citalopram (trade name: Celexa/Cipramil), Fluoxetine (trade name: Prozac) and Sertraline (trade name: Zoloft/Lustral) are thought to be acceptable. There was some thought that they may cause problems with rare lung diseases in babies if taken in the first four to five months of pregnancy, as well as some very rare heart defects, although this has neither been confirmed nor disproved. This is the case for other rare birth defects. Unluckily, the drug your wife is on, Paroxetine (Seroxat) is to my mind, not

to be used during pregnancy. There is a much larger risk of proven association with foetal heart diseases. Additionally, if any anti-depressant is taken throughout pregnancy, especially including and up to the three months before birth, the baby may get a discontinuation or withdrawal reaction and some people used to think it was advisable to slowly reduce the dose before birth. This is now not recommended as it puts the mother at risk of a recurrence of her depression without decreasing the risk to the baby. I would recommend you coming off the Seroxat before getting pregnant, and if your doctor thinks your mental health issues are bad enough to need an antidepressant, consider the other ones I have mentioned balancing the risk to yourself of precipitating recurrence of mood disturbances, depression and anxiety disorders and the potential low risk of very rare birth defects in your baby. The answer is not as simple or 100 per cent reassuring like you would have wanted.

Dear Malcolm, My wife and I are thinking of having a baby. She has been on the antidepressant Seroxat for five years and I have heard that it is dangerous to take this medicine during pregnancy. Could you put her and my mind at ease and tell us if it is dangerous to take Seroxat during pregnancy? B.D

Q:

Dear B.D, I’m afraid I cannot re-assure you. No treatment for anything is safe. There is a risk-benefit ratio to everything. This is a contentious area. There is no doubt that some anti-depressants present a health risk to your baby, however, stopping them may also have a risk. Seroxat is not acceptable to my mind in pregnancy. You and your wife need an in-depth discussion with your Health Care

A:

They have to be used with special caution in those aged under 25, as there is even a net increase in suicides in this group given SSRI’s, whereas above the 25 age-group, there is a net decrease although it may precipitate suicidal thoughts in a lot of older patients. I have done research on many of these compounds. Malcolm sees private patients: Sussex Medical Chambers Tel: 01273 424515

Government to help older people to continue living comfortably in their own homes, with particular support for those leaving hospital. Brighton & Hove City Council’s Conservative Group Spokesman on Adult Social Care & Health – Cllr. Ken Norman – has welcomed a new range of measures from the Coalition Government to help older people to continue living comfortably in their own homes, with particular support for those leaving hospital. The centrepiece of the new deal is an extra £51 million to local Home Improvement Agencies, who provide practical help and advice to older people on the following matters: • Reliable and trustworthy handyperson services, including home repairs, safety measures and security adaptations. • How to keep warm in winter • Arranging for home adaptations to be made, including grab rails, stair lifts and ground floor extensions.

• Hospital discharge services – ensuring people are given the support to recuperate in familiar surroundings. • Information on moving to potentially more suitable accommodation In addition to this, the Government has made available an extra £20 million for Disabled Facilities Grants bringing the total to £200 million this year alone – and £1.5 million funding for FirstStop, which provides independent advice to older people looking to plan their future housing needs - whether in their own homes, or in care homes. Commenting on the proposals Cllr. Norman said: “In Brighton & Hove, as in the rest of the country, the vast majority of people want to be able to

remain living in the comfort and familiar surroundings of their own homes as they grow older and I’m delighted that the Government is committing extra money to enable this to happen. It also makes sense from the perspective of the public purse – less hospital and care home admissions will save the Government money in the longer-term. “With nearly one in five of the population expected to be aged 65 or over by 2020, it is becoming ever more important that elderly, vulnerable people get the help they need to live independent lives. In my role as Chairman of the Council’s Adult Social Care Scrutiny Committee, I shall be watching carefully to ensure that this extra money is used wisely by the Green Administration.”

Funding available to keep West Sussex homes warmer this winter West Sussex local authorities have been granted funding of more than half a million pounds to deliver a coordinated programme of winter warmth assistance this winter to help tackle fuel poverty and increase emergency response capacity during cold weather.

£50 worth of free energy saving kit provided, such as draught-proofing, hot water tank jackets and energy monitors; and a survey for insulation and free grant work (subject to criteria and availability). The home visitors will signpost a range of wider assistance such as Warm Front grant for heating and insulation. The funding will also be used to increase capacity of local voluntary and statutory organisations.

Adur District Council, Arun District Council, Chichester District Council, Crawley Borough Council, Horsham District Council, Mid Sussex District Council and Worthing Borough Council all successfully bid for £617,800 from the Department of Health funding. It will fund the “Warmer West Sussex” programme. Eligible residents in West Sussex will be offered free home visits from qualified energy assessors, managed by Climate Energy.

This will include funding West Sussex CABs to conduct home visit benefit checks; the British Red Cross and Parish Councils to purchase additional winter kits, and the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to increase capacity to deliver Home Fire Safety Checks.

The visits will offer advice on getting the best deal on your energy, how to use heating controls effectively and keeping warm and saving energy in your home. There will also be up to

Others involved with supporting and targeting the project include the newly formed Wellbeing Hubs, Prevention Assessment Teams, Carer’s Support Service and Age UK.

The programme will be targeted to meet the aims of the fund and will run until the end of March 2012. Cllr Tom Wye, Worthing’s Cabinet Member responsible for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Nobody should be suffering from the cold in their own home. This initiative will help prevent this, and real practical assistance as well as very useful advice will be given. A simple phone call is all that is needed for an expert to come out and visit you in your own home and tailor the help to your own needs.” Cllr David Simmons, Adur’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, added: “I am delighted that the District and Borough Councils in West Sussex have been successful with this funding bid. It will enable us to help improve the lot of up to 500 less well off households across the area and I welcome the contribution the programme will make to the fight against the growing issue of fuel poverty.”

How To Get Fit Jon Morgan, Managing Director, Advance Personal Training offers his

7 top tips for staying motivated always Have you ever started a fitness programme and then quit? If so, you're not alone. Many people start but stop when they get bored or results come too slowly — but it doesn't need to be that way. Exercise shouldn’t be something you only do when you want to drop 10 extra pounds or prepare for the 10K charity run. To be

successful, it should be something you do as routinely as eating, sleeping, and taking your morning shower. Below are 7 tips to help you stay motivated. 1. Set goals Shifting overnight from being sedentary to becoming an exercise buff isn’t attainable for most. What’s more, unrealistic expectations will set you up for frustration and failure. Start with simple goals with longer range goals in mind. For example set an end result of walking for 30 minutes five days a week, and break it into monthly targets. During the first month, focus on walking three days a week for at least 10 minutes each time. During the second month, walk an additional day per week (so you’re up to walking four days a week). Add another day in the third month. Then, every two weeks, extend each walking session by five minutes until you reach your goal. 2. Make it personal - make it FUN! Your first step on the lifelong path to healthy physical activity is to identify what works for you. Give some thought

to what kind of activities suit your lifestyle, time available, budget and physical condition. Don’t forget to factor in your likes and dislikes. Most importantly find exercises, sports or activities that you enjoy, then vary the routine to keep you on your toes. If you're not enjoying your workouts, try something different: an exercise class, join a local sports team or martial arts club, get yourself a Personal Trainer, check out a health club or local gym, discover your hidden athletic talent! Remember, you are more likely to stick with a fitness programme if you're having fun. 3. Make physical activity part of your daily routine If it's hard to find time for exercise, don't fall back on excuses. Schedule workouts as you would any other important activity. Can you get up half an hour earlier every morning for a walk? Would this mean going to bed earlier? Be creative but be realistic! Take a walk during your lunch break, take the stairs instead of the lift at work, pedal a stationary bike or do strength training exercises with resistance tubing while you watch TV. The good news: as you become more conditioned, you’ll be able to boost the intensity of your exercise without further exerting yourself. This means that you’ll be able to fit more into your allotted time; for example, walking 4 miles in the time it used to take to do 3. 4. Put it on paper Are you hoping to lose weight? Boost energy? Sleep better? Manage a chronic condition? Write it down. Seeing the benefits of regular exercise on paper may help to stay motivated. It may also help to keep an exercise diary. Record what you did during each exercise session, how long you exercised and how you felt afterwards. Recording your efforts can help you work towards your goals and remind you that you're making progress. 5. Train with friends, neighbours or colleagues You're not in this alone. Invite friends, partners or colleagues to join you when you exercise.

6. Reward yourself After each exercise session, take a few minutes to savour the positive feelings that exercise gives you. This type of internal reward can help you make a long-term commitment to regular exercise. External rewards can help, too. When you reach a longer range goal, treat yourself to a new pair of trainers, new gym gear or new tunes to enjoy while you exercise. Meeting your exercise goals is cause for celebration! Avoid rewards you may regret soon after, such as eating ice cream or chocolate if your aim is to lose weight. 7. Be flexible If you're too busy to work out or don't feel up to it, take a day or two off. Be gentle with yourself if you need a break. The important thing is to get back on track as soon as you can. Getting back on track Even the most dedicated exercisers sometimes go astray. Almost anything can knock you off track: a cold, a night on the town, a stretch of bad weather or a little Christmas over indulgence! That’s why it’s important to learn how to reclaim your routine. When you’ve missed workout sessions, evaluate your current level of fitness and set goals accordingly. If you’ve been away from your routine for two weeks or more, the bigger challenge may come in getting yourself back in the exercise frame of mind. Try to keep confidence in yourself when you relapse rather than expending energy on feeling guilty and deflated. Focus on what it’ll take to get started again. Once you resume your program, you’ll be amazed at how quickly it will begin to feel natural. NICK GIFFORD RACEHORSE TRAINER KEEPS UP THE FAMILY TRADITION IN WEST SUSSEX

N

estling under the new South Downs National Park in West Sussex is the small village of Findon. The busy A24 passes it by from Worthing towards London and it often goes un-noticed by those wishing to spend time relaxing by the coast. It has its annual Sheep Fair which was established in 1216 and above the village is the Cissbury Ring one of the greatest of Britain’s pre historic hill forts. West Sussex has an established horse racing community with several trainers’ stables in the region. You then have Goodwood and Fontwell Park Racecourse’s. Breeding also plays an important role in the area and there are some highly respected Studs. I have just arrived at Downs House Racing Stables at Findon which is run by Nick Gifford son of the trainer Josh Gifford and brother of the Eventing Rider Tina Cook. It is a typical autumn morning with horses making their way to the gallops situated behind the stables on the downs. The yard which dates back to 1896 has flint built stables with the offices and tack room situated at the far end giving Nick a view of the activities below. Nick’s father Josh was a rider prior to becoming a trainer and was the first jockey to ride Red Rum over obstacles, finishing second in a novice hurdles at Cheltenham in 1968 when the great horse was three. His most famous training victory was Aldaniti’s win in the Grand National in 1981 with Bob Champion making his riding comeback after his battle with cancer.

This was eventually to be made into a highly successful film with John Hurt playing Bob and the late Edward Woodward playing Josh. I asked Nick a little more about the stables and how they came to own it. “After the war Ryan Price when he left the army purchased the then run down stables, house and gallops to train his National Hunt horses. In 1968 he turned to dad who was then his jockey suggesting it was time he looked towards the future as he was not getting any younger. Within 24 hours dad had purchased the stables and house at an unbelievable price leaving Ryan to build a flat racing yard a few hundred meters away and the rest is history. “It was after Aldaniti won the National in 1981 that the stables really took off with new owners bringing their horses for training. It has been my life since I was born here and as a child you saw it all. I was not forced into training, in fact I went to college to see what else the wide world had to offer. It was my decision, and I am now here today with my wife Ruth and two children Amelia aged 2 and George aged 3 months delighted that I made the right choice. “My cousin who was 16 at the time had just started out point to pointing so it gave me an opportunity to train a handful of horses for him and some of dad’s owners. It was a great first year with several winners. This was an excellent learning curve for me as I did everything from feeding the horses, mucking out, and riding out. By the third year we were up to about twelve horses and with the support of several of my friends I began to get a real taste for it. Starting at the bottom

makes one realise just what is involved – it was three years of solid hard work.” Josh decided to wind down his training activities and suggested that Nick came and worked with him as his assistant for a year. How did this change affect the owners? “It was great and all stayed with me apart from one as they had seen me working at the yard which was a nice vote of confidence. At the time there were 28 horses in the yard and it was a matter of generating new owners. To this day some of the existing owners are still with us” added Nick. “There is the saying ‘The more you know about horses the less you know’. They never stop surprising you. Just when you think you have sorted them out there can be a physical problem or a mental problem. Especially with older horses it is a mental problem and you need to find out what is going on to make them tick. Do they prefer to train on their own or need to go elsewhere – different methods of training – different riders – different bits and much more making the list endless trying to get that extra ten per cent out of a horse? “My sister Tina is an invaluable asset as in her Eventing discipline which includes dressage, her horse has to move perfectly. Every muscle, every sinew has to be working properly. In racehorses that is very rarely the case as we have to train them very hard to get them as fit as possible. As with any professional athlete there will be aches and pains and it is managing those. Tina can sit on a horse that we all think is absolutely fine and she can find a little sore spot and then correct before that spot becomes more serious. It

HORSE RACING FEATURE is managing what each horse is capable of and she brings a lot to the party especially with young horses. If she can get them using themselves properly as young horses she is building a framework for the hard work later.” “It all helps! Veterinary bills are an important part of our budget. The practice at Arundel is excellent and what I like is they have a dedicated vet that works with us on 24 hour call out. If we have to trot up a horse Tina will help the vet advising him what it is like to ride the horse so we as a team get to the root of the problem. Our remedial farrier Stuart Packham is involved often diagnosing things one will never see with the human eye. It really is a team effort,” added Nick. With racecourses all over the country a lot of travel is involved for Nick. The owners like to see the trainer at races to discuss the horses form prior to the race. It means early mornings and late nights. One has to take into consideration the motorway delays as well as getting the horse on time to the course so there is time to relax and prepare for the race with those involved. “It is a logistical nightmare at times,” said Nick. “Dad is always there if I need to ask a question. He is in the background and often attends races as well as appearing at some of the schooling and work mornings. He lets me get on with my work and I admire him for that as it must not have been an easy task to hand over the reins having run a successful stable.” Nick added, “His advice at the sales is invaluable when looking at the youngsters – that is our future! “I work well with the owners and they look forward to their visits every fortnight. Some of the local younger ones are party animals,” Nick added with a laugh. “We also have an owner’s syndicate which has been successful and we are now forming a racing club as we speak. It will be a lot of fun for those that cannot own their own horse.” How do you see the world of racing in the current economic climate I asked? “It is a frustrating aspect of our sport that there seem to be more people going racing now than ever yet our prize money is not good. Ireland pays more and we are light years behind France. There will come a point where some owners will consider moving some of their horses abroad. “Racecourse owners and bookmakers seem to think that owning racehorses is an expensive hobby, which it is. Therefore it is not necessary to put up the prize money. They see it as a luxury item. Bookmakers still rely heavily on horse racing for their income. They want us to put more and

more meetings on so they get more revenue from gambling. They seem to forget there are not enough horses which results in small entries. What we need are fewer races with more entries with higher prize money. “There are some terrible courses out there and some excellent ones. Racecourse owners need to look at what they offer for those attending across the board. Some of my lads are treated badly at some venues with catering and poor conditions. Owners and trainers need nice areas to meet and jockeys need decent changing areas. I am not going to travel hundreds of miles to win £1,800 first prize. It is not worth it with all my overheads,” said Nick. Nick now plans the season in more detail than he used to and courses play an important part. Haydock is right at the top of the list for what they provide. There are numerous small tracks that pump a lot of money back into the industry such as Ludlow, Fakeham and Taunton. The larger tracks of Cheltenham, Sandown and Ascot look after us well. “I do worry about the future of racing as everybody’s costs are going up and yet we are racing for less prize money. I would also think that 80 per cent of horses in training are of limited ability. If you are lucky to have a good one you will make money but that is in the top of the profession. There will be a time when owners will have to take stock of the situation and this could affect some of the trainers. “The National Trainers Federation has meetings on a regional level twice a year and we discuss problems but I think racing is at the mercy of the bookmakers. Handi-capped races will have a bigger betting turnover. Some jockeys live on the breadline by the time they have paid their agent, valet and travel costs it leaves them nothing – only a few make it to the top. Not every jockey is as cheerful as Frankie Dettori.” The new whip regulations are very confusing especially for me, the layman

47 writing this feature. Why they could not have waited until the end of the flat season then trialled it on the all weather courses out of the limelight. Is a jockey in the Grand National going to remember how many times he has used a whip on a horse – he has enough to worry about just finishing the race? It is scary and it is pandering to animal rights – these sticks are air cushioned. Common sense must prevail here!” Nick refers to his stable as ‘Team Gifford’. “Carol Double my Head Girl worked under my father and when I started she returned to the fold after having a family. Tina Ford is my secretary and is very much involved in all the paperwork and racing declarations. “As for my Travelling Head Lad Andrew Veale he has a wonderful affinity with horses and his experience when it comes to working with younger horses is a delight to watch. He is able to talk to them and get responses many others are unable to get - a great asset to this stable.” To conclude, the future looks bright for all at Downs House Stables. It is the future of the industry that concerns Nick. Let’s hope that the powers that be in racing see the light and make sure future generations will be around to carry on the Gifford traditions.

“Business is a huge passion of mine”

MIKE WEATHERLEY MP FOR HOVE & PORTSLADE KEEPS YOU UP TO DATE

Championing Local Businesses As many will be aware, business is a huge passion of mine. In Parliament, I am Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Retail & Business Crime which campaigns for the interests of small traders. I have also previously owned a local manufacturing company. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. The voices of these businesses should be at the forefront of our policy decisions, which is why I decided to get in contact with over 1,000 businesses within Hove and Portslade. I hand-delivered a letter asking local businesses for feedback that I could then bring to Westminster to present to the Government.

Music in Parliament To discuss the issues of live music and copyright protection, members of bands Bullet For My Valentine and Anthrax along with former Busted and Fightstar singer Charlie Simpson came as my guests to Parliament. Matt Tuck from Bullet For My Valentine, Rob Caggiano from Anthrax, and Charlie Simpson visited as the latest supporters of my parliamentary music competition, Rock the House. Other rock stars who have recently agreed to become Patrons of the project are Ian Gillan from Deep Purple and Alice Cooper. After the success of the first competition in 2011, Rock the House will be coming back even louder in 2012.

Victoria Gardens Campsite Several months ago, Victoria Gardens in the centre of Brighton made national news when campers took over. After a prolonged, unwelcome stay on one of our beautiful public green spaces, the campers were moved on by Mother Nature after a storm flooded the camp. Victoria Gardens, as a result, was left in a right state with taxpayers being forced to foot the bill.

It’s really encouraging to get support for Rock the House from such high profile bands and artists. I hope that with this increased level of recognition, the issues of copyright protection and intellectual property rights will be taken more seriously. Many budding musicians struggle to protect their music from illegal copying. I am fighting to ensure that their creations – the songs that we love to hear – are properly protected.

The Prime Minister is Right on Gay Marriage At Conservative Party Conference, David Cameron announced that he planned to legalise same-sex marriage. I fully support the Prime Minister’s commitment to equal marriage rights for same-sex couples. In August, I wrote to the Prime Minister to voice my concern over marriage inequality for same-sex couples. A consultation is due to begin shortly with a view to opening up marriage to same-sex couples in the near future. Cameron was spot on when he said that he supported gay marriage. The State shouldn’t be stopping people from doing things because of their sexuality. I am amazed that such blatant discrimination still goes on. Chat with Mike As always, if any of my constituents would like to get in touch, please contact me on 020 7219 7216 or mike.weatherley.mp@parliament.uk. Please also write to me: Mike Weatherley MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA.

Hearty congratulations to: Harry O’Neill from West Sussex who is our winner Fourteen year old angler, Harry O’Neill, was thrilled to find himself the winner of the fantastic Fishing Package. “Fishing is my passion and this has made my day” he said. The prize consists of an Anyfish Anywhere 4/6 oz fixed spool beachcaster rod, reel preloaded with line, sets of Tronix rigs, weights, tackle box and a £10 bait voucher. The prize was presented to him by Prime Angling at 74 Brighton Road, Worthing and West Break Water Fishing Hut at the entrance of the Shoreham Port West Arm.

Mr Lurve x

A

BBC2 and Radio Five Live, being the Resident DJ at trendy nightclub, ANNABELS in London’s Mayfair, meeting people like Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, Bryan Adams, Angelina Jolie, Colin Firth, Michael Flatley and many more.

mbrose Harcourt, “Mr Lurve” is celebrating 25 years of spreading the Lurve to Sussex, London and the Southeast of England where he has been broadcasting all this time. He joined Southern Sound Radio in 1986 to present a Soul and R & B show on Saturdays, called Soul Direction. The show finished at 11pm and then there was a sponsored show which ran from 11pm till Midnight when the station closed down for the night. The sponsored show ran its course and was not renewed. The Managing Director at the time, Rory McLeod called in and asked for ideas how the hour could be filled. Without hesitation, Ambrose suggested, an hour of Love songs and that is how The Love Hour was born. Within the first month, response and feedback was unbelievable. At its best, the Love Hour was receiving 200 to 250 letters a week to the show. Remember in those days, there was no email, no text messages, facebook or twitter. The show became massive and staff at the radio station nicknamed Ambrose, Mr Lurve. The success of the show was amazing, from one night a week to 3 nights a week and eventually to 7 nights a week. With success comes greater responsibility and name changes. The Love Hour later became a daily 3 hour show first, Nightime Heart & Soul and later The Love Zone and was broadcast not only in Sussex but also the Southern Radio Group, sometimes 6 days a week and later 3 nights a week. He also broadcast for the Capital Radio Group throughout London and the south east of England. The high point of the show has always been the Love Bites top 3 where Ambrose gets to chat with the listeners

He is the Barry White of Sussex and there aren’t many people in the area who can say we haven’t heard his deep romantic tones on the radio.

about their 3 favourite love songs and things about life in general. Compulsive listening is the way listeners describe it. Ambrose believes that his show came before any of the other Love song shows on Commercial Radio today and definitely before the one on Radio 2. He was interviewed and auditioned for the Radio 2 show before Steve Wright got it. He currently presents the LOVE INN on Brighton’s Juice 107.2, Monday to Thursday 10pm till Midnight and has just celebrated his 3rd Anniversary on the show. Over the years, Ambrose has met and interviewed many famous personalities as well as working for the BBC for a year in Television and Radio at Television Centre in London with BBC1,

Please mention What’s Happening when responding to an advert

He also worked for ITV Meridian and SKY UK Living presenting the 8 week series of “Looking for Love” which was filmed in Brighton and many parts of Sussex. But he says that meeting and interviewing Barry White has got to be up there, “To be with the Walrus Of Lurve was something very special. I remember him saying that ‘We might all eat different foods, drink different wines and speak different languages, but there is one thing that we all understand, the language of lurve.’” Being a man of love, Ambrose has been involved with many charities over the years and currently is Patron of Chestnut Tree House, the only children’s Hospice in Sussex, St Barnabas Hospice and has worked with The Princes Trust, British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research, Scope, Mencap and many others. Ambrose has so many great moments and stories to tell about the past 25 years of spreading the lurve. But says that helping listeners propose, dedications to mums in Maternity Units who were delivering their new babies to the world listening to Mr Lurve playing some great love songs, and some wonderful tales of what listeners got up to listening to him bring smiles to his face and ours.

What’s Happening with MOTORING

It’s not all about Mii O

ver the forthcoming months there will be an influx of small city cars from the VW Group. First up, will be the Volkswagen Up, then there’ll be the SEAT Mii, and bringing up the rear, so to speak, is the Skoda Citygo. All these cars are basically the same. They are all built on the same platform and share the same engines and running gear. Thereafter, the main differences are hardly noticeable, apart from the price and a very few cosmetics changes to the bodywork and interior.

Danny Cobbs compares the SEAT Mii with its cousins in the Volkswagen empire

I’ve just returned from driving the SEAT Mii, ahead of it going on sale in the early part of this year and a couple of weeks after the VW Up launch. The Skoda Citygo launch is planned for next month. I should start by saying that I was completely blown away by the Up. Smart suited marketeers like using the expression ‘on trend’, and with the Up, VW are absolutely bang on the money. Everything about it reflects what the populous now expect from a city car. With the Up then, it offers a small and functional 4seater, three-door (the 5-door version is to follow) car with a lively little three-cylinder, super efficient, 1.0litre petrol engine. The interior has been styled to keep the fashionconscience happy too; with much of what once would have been covered with nasty plastics or cheap cloth material now benefitting with high-grade colour-coded inserts to match the bodywork. All very urban chic. Think Mini, think Fiat 500, and the Up sits very neatly between the two, only it’s a much better ride than the Fiat, and infinitely better built too, and, with a starting price of just £7,995, it is also cheaper than the Mini. I’m predicting great things for the Up in 2012. And you would imagine all this good design and efficiency would transfer easily over to the other branches of the Volkswagen Empire without too many difficulties. At least that’s what I thought.

appeal to those who wanted to be seen driving in something a little less staid than a VW.

The SEAT version of this car is slightly, ever so slightly, different. So slight that all we’re talking about is a gentle tweak to the rear windows, or C-pillars, and the nose. Not much to write about, then. Wrong.

And by doing it this way, SEAT has carved out a rather nice niche for themselves within a very competitive market place. Their cars, irrespective of the fact they may have a Golf or a Touran Somehow, and I’m not sure how, SEAT have underpinnings, ooze a vibrancy and sell for less completely skewed how it now looks. Gone is that money than the cars they are based on. But now it urban chic, gone too is the funky interior and all that seems the tables have turned, or have been turned, remains is a car which is blander than a whitewashed and it’s SEAT’s holding company, VW, who will sell wall in an igloo. And this is from SEAT, the company the more attractive of these cars. who, in the past, The have Range taken the best bits from has the option Rover Evoque of two-wheel drive. Aesthetics aside, the Mii is still a competent drive, Volkswagen and How rebadged and remodelled them to much like the Up. And, according will Land Rover aficionados react, wonders Danny Cobbs to their engineers,

tweaked so the 999cc engine – in either the 60PS or 75PS - is unique to the Mii. Could I tell the difference? If I’m totally honest, not really, but I’m sure if I drove both back-to-back I may be able to spot them. It doesn’t ever feel like there is just three pots pumping away under the bonnet. And, given that this cars remit is for those folk who will rarely venture away from the bright lights of the city, it never disappoints. Even on the motorway it is still able to cruise along at the national speed limit, with a little extra left in the bank if it’s ever needed. Prices for the Mii have yet to be confirmed but if the whispers are to be believed

then the base model will come in just under that of the similar spec Up, so expect it to be around the £7500 mark. This seems very reasonable but put it up against the more stylish Up and it seems like the poor relation. Will this detract from SEAT sales? I can’t see how it won’t, unless they price it more competitively, or give it a higher level of standard equipment, and then the Mii becomes a different proposition altogether. Also, let’s not forget about the Skoda Citygo, it still remains to be driven and may yet be the best out of the three. I’ll keep you posted on that one.

What’s Happening with ANTIQUES

tHe seCret Dealer The antique business is a strange old beast. One of the world’s oldest professions it is basically all about people’s opinions and the latest trends. One man’s meat is the next mans poison and we all have our own favourite things we like to buy. I get to handle the most amazing and beautiful items and have met some lovely people over the years through this business and I feel privileged to do what I do. But one of the hardest aspects of the antique business is in finding fresh goods and I am always seeking good quality antiques and jewellery to purchase. Whether it is

on television or in the ‘Real World’ I love having a deal and it is a great feeling to own something of beauty even if it is only in my possession for a short time before it is sold. I have found antiques in the most unexpected places and you never know what or where you are going to find your next buy, which makes it very difficult to pass by an antique shop without stopping for a quick look! Whether it is in an antique fair, a shop an auction or someone’s home, the search for that elusive treasure goes on and on and you would be amazed to discover what can be found where. Sometimes the most beautiful items can be found in the most humble of places and you can never tell a book by its cover in this trade.

A pair of 19th Century porcelain plaques

Secret Dealers needs you! This month I want to appeal to readers who would like to take part in the new series of Secret Dealers. We are about to start recording this ITV1 hit show and we are looking for homes with antiques and collectables for sale. If you are thinking of de-cluttering or cashing in on your valuables but you are not sure of the best way to do this, then this show could be the perfect solution for you. Experts value everything in your home and then three experienced dealers compete to make you their best offers. You decide what to sell and what to keep based on the offers you receive and what is too sentimental or personal to part with. You could discover that something you thought was worthless was worth a fortune and you could walk away with thousands of pounds. I would love to get some local people to feature in the new programme and to apply please call 0117 970 7674 or email secretdealers@rdftelevision.com.

Every month Simon Schneider will be keeping you posted on the ups and downs of the antique and jewellery trades

Last month I was very lucky and I bought and sold some fantastic items. A pair of 19th Century porcelain plaques is among my favourites items. They depict an amorous devil and a naked lady what is there to dislike? I have also been fortunate enough to buy a fantastic Art Deco bronze by my favourite sculptor Joseph Lorenzl. When I first started dealing many years ago, items like this stylish bronze were quite cheap to buy as they were not considered as being of any great value but tastes change and Art Deco has been going through a revival for some time. Values for Lorenzl and other similar artists are very much on the up and I have many customers waiting to buy items like this. Should you have any similar items please do not hesitate to call me, my customers have money burning in their pockets and I will pay top prices for the right pieces.

What’s Happening with FISHING

54

Gone Fishing with Prime Angler

Mike Harwood

W

elcome to all you anglers out there. Here is a guide to what’s happening and what you may be able to catch along our stunning coastline in the coming month of February. As many of you may well know, the past month has been a little indifferent at times with catches mainly consisting of whiting, flounders, rockling and the odd bass. Some very fat dabs have been continuing to show away to the east of our region. It is this trend that will hopefully continue into early spring. The best baits in the coming month for the beaches will probably be lugworms, rag worm and any shellfish thrown on the beach after

storms for the flounders. Dabs like a stinky piece of black lug tipped with a tiny piece of mackerel. The marauding whiting will take almost any bait you offer them at the moment and even foods not usually associated with sea fishing. An example of this is a friend who landed them on chicken pieces and another on a fruit pastille. If you fancy something a little different it might be worth your while having a dabble in the Adur, especially if you tire of the whiting hoards on the beaches. Maybe cuckoos corner or the old toll bridge could be worth a try for a few flatfish using harbor rag or white rag. Be sure to choose small tides as

the spring tides carry far too much water and move rapidly along, which seems to deter the fish. Thinking of deeper waters, the boat fishing off the Sussex coast should improve immensely this month with the bigger cod moving back into deeper waters for spawning purposes. Catches along with the cod will be whiting and now big pollack are appearing over the wrecks so a trip out with a local charter skipper may be worth the investment. The boat fishing will require some stinky inky cuttlefish baits if fishing over rough ground, but over the wrecks you will need plugs and lures whilst drifting. With steadily increasing day light time, it gives greater opportunity for those not really into fishing but like walking and exploring the beaches to do a little beach combing along the high tide line after a storm. This can provide some very interesting finds in terms of sea creatures and debris ripped up from the seabed far out to sea and then deposited on our shores. Thousands of star fish, crabs, several other varieties of shellfish, including the odd oyster and fish eggs can be strewn along our shoreline for all to discover. This is a great reminder of the biodiversity lying just off shore that we never get a chance to see and what a fantastic outdoor classroom for the younger ones amongst us. We should all remember to respect this awesome powerful element. Be safe out there.

What’s Happening with HOMES & GARDENS

WHAT’S HAPPENING Garden News

Mark Oakley from Any Garden reports on the ground

F

ebruary already. Spring is starting to get its feet under the table with the slowly lengthening days, and the sunshine getting stronger. Have a look around the garden and you will see plenty of signs of new growth, which is always a cheery sight. We still have the danger of a cold snap, heavy frosts or even snow, so don’t let your guard down on what has been a mild winter so far. On the subject of early spring flowers, if you are enjoying the appearance of clumps of snowdrops in your garden, then you can divide up the clumps now and spread them around the garden to get a better covering next year. In fact now is a good time to divide any plants in the beds that are taking over or getting too big. It’s a good way of getting extra plants in the garden for free. As always, it really is a case of looking ahead to get the most out of it. Now is the time to start sowing summer bedding plants. This can be done in a warm

greenhouse or indoors on a warm window sill. When you consider how much trays of bedding plants cost, compared to buying packets of seeds, it really is a cost effective way of getting the plants. Make sure you use fresh compost when you plant them. You can also plant up many varieties of salad plants under cover to give you an early cheap crop. It always tastes so much better than anything bought in the supermarkets. It’s good practice as well because in a few weeks time the seed sowing goes into overdrive! Outside in the garden there’s still plenty of pruning that can be done on shrubs such as dogwood, mallow, willow, mahonias, summer clematis and hydrangeas. Make sure you do any pruning with a sharp pair of secateurs that will give you nice clean cuts to avoid getting diseases in the wound. It’s also a lot easier if they are sharp as well! If you have time after the pruning give the beds a fork over

to remove any areas you have compacted whilst working there. Whilst on the subject of sharp blades, it’s not going to be long until the lawn will need its first cut. If you have a rainy day, take the opportunity to sharpen up the blades on the mower and any other hand tools. Most can be done inexpensively with an oil stone. It’s also a good idea to get any machinery serviced now so it’s ready. This time of year can be rewarding when you can get out into the garden, but also frustrating as you find yourself waiting for the warmer weather and really wanting to get on. Don’t be tempted to rush, as most plants will catch up on a few weeks late planting or sowing, whereas they won’t survive bad weather if they are planted too early. Take your time and make the best of the good days and have a back up plan for the bad weather, even if it’s reading a gardening book on a wet Sunday afternoon.

why you should visit...

A Wedding Fair by Ian Trevett, Rosebery Images

A

typical day for me as a wedding photographer starts in the morning as the bride prepares for her big day. I am with her as she prepares to leave for the ceremony and am waiting as she arrives at the venue. I photograph the bride and groom as they sign (actually, for legal reasons, as they pretend to sign) the register, and then outside for confetti, group shots and portraits of the couple. I’m still there for speeches, cake-cutting and dancing. Sometimes it occurs to me that I almost spend more time with the bride on her wedding day than her groom does. It is, therefore, vital that the couple feel comfortable having me around. You can find out a lot about the quality of a photographer’s work on a website, but you can’t find out if this is a person you can get along with. One solution is a wedding fair. You get to meet, not just photographers, but every kind of wedding service provider, and although first impressions aren’t always 100% accurate, you tend to know who you want to deal with. The old adage is that people do business with people and a website, no matter how well designed, is still just impersonal information. As well as getting to meet photographers, florists, chauffeurs, cake-bakers, jewellers, dress-makers and chocolate fountain operators, wedding fairs are a great place for new ideas. And, of course, they are incredibly convenient. Why make dozens of phone calls and spend weeks researching when all the suppliers are there under one roof? If you are lucky, you might find someone dishing out complimentary champagne, and if you fancy a slice of wedding cake, there is usually a willing cake-maker ready to serve tasty samples. But most importantly you can save yourself untold time and effort when organising the biggest day of your life. SILVER LINED WEDDING SHOWS is a small yet perfectly formed company with a dedicated group of individuals experienced in running professional Wedding Shows. 67 P&O Ferries sails into 2012 with the launch of a brand new ship for its Dover - Calais service, the £150 million Spirit of France. It's the twin sister to Spirit of Britain which the company launched last year. The combined cost of the two ships represents the biggest investment P&O Ferries has ever made, and the new ships are the biggest ferries, by far, ever built for the Dover Calais run. Such huge investment shows confidence for the future, but 2012 is also a time for reflection as this year sees the 175th anniversary of the foundation of P&O. It was in 1837 that the enterprising business partners Brodie McGhie Willcox and Arthur Anderson began steam ship services to the Iberian Peninsula, and later to the Orient, leading to the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. To mark the anniversary P&O Ferries has built displays into both of its new ships charting the history of P&O.

WIN! Six lucky readers will win a crossChannel crossing

These days P&O Ferries carries around eight million people a year on its ships between Dover and Calais, making the company the number 1 choice for ferry travel to France with its choice of 23 return sailings a day.

We have six prizes of free return crossings for a car and passengers, for any length of stay, up for grabs in our easy to enter competition. Just answer the following question and send your entry to us by 20th February 2012 by email editor@whatshappeningmag.co.uk or post to: What’s Happening Magazine, 5 Southlands Way, Shoreham-by-Sea, BN43 6AS QUESTION: What are the names of P&O Ferries' two new ships? MARK EDE STRIKES BACK February. Spring is on the horizon. Sort of. Maybe. OK, leaving aside my very British obsession of the weather, I shall turn to things musical, which, apparently, is my job. Ok, I'll get the advert out of the way early. Sometime WHM columnist, noted blues/soul/gospel singer Jo Harman has released a DVD, featuring extensive footage of her gig at The All Saints in Lewes. It may well be a sign of the times that artists are releasing DVD's rather than more traditional 'albums' as the new ways of buying, selling and

promoting music become yet more varied. Jo tells me that a quick scan of the internet revealed reviews from places as far afield as Korea, Poland, Mexico and the way that music is marketed and bought is certainly changing; perhaps the time honoured tradition of jumping in the van and touring is not quite as important as it once was? Anyway, Jo's DVD is produced by those good people at YellowFish Music Group and further information/sales can be obtained by sending an email to: info@yellowfishmusicgroup.com or calling 01273 782035. Looking at the local gig scene, one of my favourite bands, Phantom Limb are coming to Brighton as part of their national tour (ignore that bit about touring in the paragraph above, clearly!) to promote their new album 'The Pines'. Fronted by the distinctive gospel voice of Yolanda Quaterley, this Bristol based soul meets country outfit put on a blistering, if slow burning, show that is genuinely not to be missed. So, one for the diary, then, Saturday 3rd March at the Latest Music Bar.

CD of the Month:PHANTOM LIMB - THE PINES The recent trend toward 'real' music may help this talented Bristol based 6 piece get the wider exposure their talent so clearly deserves. This, their second studio album, opens with a decidedly jaunty first single 'The Pines' complete with driving banjo adding to the band's more standard soulful blues/roots sound. The country flavour continues throughout the set, whether through touches of steel guitar, or the twang in Yolanda Quarterley's otherwise decidedly gospel tones, but however one defines things, the over riding sentiment is the sheer quality of proceedings. My favourite track in a strong, if somewhat sombre, set is the rousing 'Harder Than Stone', a simply astonishingly good song, beautifully constructed and fantastically performed. Seriously good stuff which you'll be hard pressed to better anywhere. If you can, catch them live too.

E F I L L L O R & K C O AR BY THE LEGENDARY BOB WARD

OK

for the last couple of months I’ve severely digressed, what with my recent gigs and writing about these for you. However, hang on in there as we’re going back to the million pound production deal you’ve heard about on these pages albeit some time back. So where to resume? Charlie Skarbek designated producer of the Australian Rugby World Cup Series, who had incidentally produced albums for the likes of Dame Shirley Bassey, Cliff Richard, José Carreras, Barry Manilow, Charlotte Church, Cilla Black to name but a few, summoned us again to a meeting at his mansion/studio in deepest Sussex. Once again we found ourselves sitting around his Beggar’s Banquet style boardroom with platinum records adorning the walls. Anticipation levels were running high, and we weren’t disappointed! Under our band name The Railing Stains we each signed the production deal contract worth £1million. Then the govn’r presented us with the first two songs he had sourced for the album, two unusual chant songs – ‘Woolly Bully’ originally recorded by Sam The Sham and the Pharaohs and ‘Louie Louie’ by The Kingsmen.

None of us in the band were expecting these songs, and to tell the truth, when we heard what they were, we were taken out of our usual rock n roll comfort zone. We communicated this to Charlie but he

advised us to get rehearsing, and I was told to keep him posted when we were ready for the recording studios. Again as before when we were initially invited to Charlie’s country pile, when he informed us he wanted to sign us for the Rugby World Cup Series that included a three year album deal, we were in a state of soft- focus shock – not daring to believe what we had heard. Now just a few weeks on, with the ink drying on the contracts, Charlie’s parting shot was that he’d like the first tracks to be put down in November (2001). All of us once again entered that state of unreality, when everything just goes into quiet, slow motion. Just three years previously, I’d started my Stones cover band playing the big gigs, pubs and openair concerts but now the promise of the contract would put us in front of a potential global audience of 150 million. This was it. We were really on our way. Stardom beckoned. Rehearsals commenced the following week and our lives inverted. We lived for the night as that’s when we rehearsed three times a week. Sleeping through the day. And then following the age old tradition of many a band that’s just about to make it, the Egos Started To Rise. A few quips at first from one particular guitarist to another, which over the numerous wee small hours turned into aggressive, competitive hectoring. A huge fight finally erupted between the two, so intense that

myself and one member of the band managed to walk out of that particular rehearsal without any of the warring parties even noticing. So close to making it, I realised I had to sack the guitarist that was at the heart of it all. I was severely under pressure and phoned Charlie. “If these are your thoughts, then deal with it but remember rightly or wrongly, you’ll always be the fall guy,” was Charlie’s sobering reply. It was just a few months away before a showcase concert in London for the bigwig record label chaps and our recording commitments were imminent. This was our big chance and the band had imploded under the anticipation of success. What was I to do? Where would I get another guitarist who would fit with the band at such short notice? We were so close but I could see it all slipping away. Something had to be done. I picked up the phone and called one of my old contacts, brother to Mick, Chris Jagger. THE LAST WORD... Tim Loughton, MP, Under Secretary of State for children and families

his year is going to be a momentous year. No, not the Olympics or Diamond Jubilee, but my wife and I are both going to be 50 and I think I am beginning to act like it. A similar experiment was tried in the 1960’s and not taken forward. However we seem to be receiving much more correspondence on this at the moment than on arguably much more pressing subjects like youth unemployment or education. The crisis of over a million young people not in employment, training or education is worrying. That is why the Work Programme and the recently announced £1billion Youth Contract is so important which will see special help to get teenagers into supported work on top of 250,000 extra work experience placements, and over 440,000 apprenticeships this year, the highest ever.

time. When I asked why they were not banned in school I was told that the parents insist their kids need them. Funny that back in the 1970’s before they were invented I was no less safe at school. If the parents really think that their children cannot do without electronic devices when they need to be paying attention to teacher, then they could always try another school if this one takes a stand and introduces a ‘mobile phone crèche’ at reception. I also chose the coldest night of the year to go out on patrol with the local police and when I turned up the town centre was unusually quiet. We did get the chance to use the flashing blue lights when called to a house in Worthing where a party had turned violent and a neighbour had complained of assault. Slightly unnerving for the police when the householder opened the door only to greet me like a lifelong friend and thank me for the help I had given him at a recent constituency surgery! I had the chance to get back on the busses with the launch of a revamped Number 7 route across Worthing and Adur to be run under licence from Stagecoach by Compass Busses. Strangely, they were not keen for me to take it on a test drive. I looked round the brand spanking new classroom block at Northbrook College in Worthing which has just won funding from the Skills and Funding Agency to continue

the transformation of the Broadwater site into a much needed facility fit for purpose in the 21st century. Incredibly they are still using dilapidated prefab buildings first used for convalescing troops returning from the First World War. The colourful frontage is a huge improvement and must help lift the game of the many local teenagers who need to improve their skills and qualifications. If we can get a new home for Worthing College which is using equally inappropriate premises, well past their sellby date, then Worthing will be on the map as a centre of learning too. Who knows, the local politicians might end up getting just a modicum of credit for it as well.
