No other National Park in the UK boasts the size, dramatic diversity or rare wildlife of the Cairngorms. Bigger than Luxembourg, rest assured you will find mountains high enough, valleys low enough and rivers wide enough; it’s the perfect place to go wild. Whether you fancy hopping through heather on a hilltop, cantering through moorlands or rambling through ancient Caledonian, pine-infused forests, you can in the Cairngorms. Wherever you go, you will be in the lap of nature, so be ready for close encounters of the furry, feathery kind.
On wheels, as you weave through the trees, wind whistling in your ear, you’re bound to spot a darting roe deer, or scuttling red squirrel. Take it a bit slower and you’ll have time to stop and gaze upwards, per chance setting eyes on a Golden Eagle or Osprey. Food and Drink is just as varied and exciting as the landscape. Venison from our roaming deer is a must-try, as is fresh fish from our crystal clear rivers and lochs. Whisky is our speciality, but we’re getting pretty good at Gin too! And, with all the fresh air you’re going to be getting, refuelling at one of our cosy cafes with cake and a cuppa is essential.

It’s also on the Sustrans National Cycle Route No.7, which runs from Glasgow to Inverness. Another activity on offer is fishing. The fact it has a train station makes it easily accessible.

The biggest pull to Laggan for many is its superb mountain biking centre, Wolftrax, which promises ‘trails with bite’. A day out here is full of fun for all the family, whether you’re gently flowing down a ‘green’ or seeking thrills and spills on a ‘black’. With no cost to ride the trails, it’s also great value and you’ll find everything you need on site including bike hire, a test trail and a cosy café.
There’s a weath of well maintained paths but, if you venture off them a bit, you’re likely to glimpse golden eagles, ospreys, otters, deer and pine marten, as well as a wonderful display of flora and fauna. For budding botanists and historians, Laggan also delivers, with its Creag Meagaidh Nature Reserve and range of pictish relics, such as the Dun da Lambh Fort.

This community is renowned in the valley for its can-do attitude and runs a hugely diverse and entertaining events programme at its community hall. Visitors are also extremely well served when it comes to food and drink, with not only a fine dining establishment, Anderson’s, but also several cafes, including 1896 Gallery which showcases local artistry. There’s also a friendly and well-stocked general store/Post Office and a community garden, once featured on TV show Beechgrove Garden, which helped design it.

Map page 12 - grid ref F8 www.dulnainbridge.com Home to the fictitious “Glenbogle Station” (off the telly!), an ancient Pictish settlement and, of course, a bridge which dates back to the 18th century. This wee village is centred around – yes, you’ve guessed it – a bridge, which splits the village into Morayshire on one side (known as the Dulnain side) and Invernes-shire on the other (identified as crofting community Skye-of-Curr). This 18th century, single arched bridge crosses the River Dulnain, which flows through the village in a deep, striking gorge. History buffs will also enjoy checking out the remains of a Pictish settlement, the twelve ancient lime kilns and a hut circle dating back to the Bronze/Iron age.
This is an ideal location for rest and relaxation, surrounded by the Caledonian pine forests and vast views of the Cairngorm valley. There’s nothing better to unwind than a wander through the woods spotting the wildlife living here, such as capercaillie, Scottish crossbill, osprey and red squirrel. Similarly, botanists will particularly love the Curr Wood, home to the country’s largest population of twinflower. The train stops just outside Dulnain at Broomhill, otherwise known as the fictitious Glenbogle Station from the TV series Monarch of the Glen. Although small, you’ll still find plenty of B&Bs here, as well as a luxury boutique hotel, a Post Office/shop and a garage. And, as it’s only a few miles from Grantown-on-Spey, a wealth of convenience stores are on your doorstep. www.visitcairngorms.com

Affectionately known as ‘the forest village’, Nethy Bridge is a firm favourite with holiday-makers and has been since Victorian times. As a result, there are plenty of places to stay of all shapes, sizes and locations (hot tubs are aplenty in this neck of the woods!). One of the reasons it’s so popular is that, while in easy reach of the main attractions in the area, it has a real aura of calm and tranquillity. Miles of popular woodland walks, clearly marked, pass through Nethy, such as the Speyside Way. For those who want more guidance watching the wildlife while they walk, there is an RSPB ranger service in the community centre, too.
The village has enough conveniences to make you self- sufficient, so you can hunker down here in peace, such as a local shop, Post Office, café, butcher and farm shop. Remove reference to farm shop in brackets. Nethy has plenty of activities to keep you busy, such as bowling, golf, tennis and its own Castle – Castle Roy, an 11th century fort built by Clan Comyn. According to experts, it’s one of the oldest unchanged castles of its ilk in Scotland. This village is immortalised in the song the ‘Haughs of Cromdale’ (haughs means low ground) inspired by the 1690 battle of Cromdale, and has close (and gory) connections with the Jacobite uprisings. The story goes that the Jacobites were ambushed and slain in their sleep by dragoon guards, with the defeat putting an end to the Jacobite rebellion in the Highlands. such importance in Scottish history that the battlefield is protected by Historic Scotland. But Cromdale is not all blood and guts. There’s plenty of peace and harmony to be had here. The village sits in the scenic setting between the Cromdale hills and the River Spey. The scenery is stunning and ever changing. As the River Don winds its way through, the landscape goes from farmland to more dramatic, woodland, lined with birch and pine, then to desolate moorland. A photographer’s dream, especially in spring and autumn, when the contrasts are most marked. Bellabeg is the largest of the small communities which are scattered throughout Strathdon. An annual spectacle not to be missed here is, on the fourth Saturday of August, when the ‘Clansmen of the Lonach Highlanders’ march through the village for the Lonach Gathering – the area’s unique take on the Highland games, renowned for its friendly atmosphere. Strathdon is steeped in history. There are castles a plenty, for example: Corgarff, Glenbuchat and the Doune of Invernochty (one of the finest examples of Norman earthwork in Scotland, dating back to 800AD).

As the reserve is classified ‘of special scientific interest’, you have a good chance here of spotting an osprey, deer or perhaps an otter. Indeed, the whole area is a magical mecca for wildlife. The Glen Tanar estate is also one of the most popular sites for eager fishermen in pursuit of trout and salmon. As well as its royal connections – Queen Victoria was a fan – Dinnet also has a rich literary history. The great romantic poet Byron, for instance, spent time here as a boy and later encapsulated its beauty in his verse. There are many sites to explore for the budding historian or archaeologist too, like Kinord Cross, Tomnaverie Stone Circle, Burn O’Vat and the Tullich Symbol Stone. The Crannog at the north end of Loch Kinord was even supposedly once a prison, affording inmates some of the best views in Britain!

Visitors delight in these wellsignposted walks which boast spectacular views of the many Munroes (mountains over 3,000ft) which surround the village.

These views are, more often than not, accompanied by the sound of roaring red deer stags, especially during the rutting season, around October. It’s also an ideal stop-over for those planning to walk from the Lairig Ghru through to Jock’s Road and into Angus. Or for those who love outdoor sporting activities – particularly golf buffs who can boast they’ve played Scotland’s ‘highest’ 18 hole course here! Another lure for holiday makers is the rich heritage, in evidence all around the area. There are two castles, for instance, Braemar Castle and the ruins of Kindrochit Castle, built by Malcolm Canmore, a medieval King of the Scots.
If you’re visiting in September, then be sure not to miss the legendary Braemar Gathering (games), which takes place on the first Saturday, and is traditionally when Monarchs were ‘acclaimed’ as Chieftains. If you’re lucky, you might meet the Queen, whose castle, Balmoral, is in the small hamlet of Crathie, and who is a devoted attendee. For those interested in wildlife, Braemar is a great base for spotting stags, roe deer, red squirrels and golden eagles. Visitors can explore the area on foot or by taking part in any of the wide range of activities on offer including pony trekking, climbing, mountain biking, hang-gliding, skiing or golf. Corrie Fee National Nature Reserve This reserve, at the head of Glen Clova, hosts dramatic landforms and is home to important plant species rarely found elsewhere like yellow mountain saxifrage and roseroot. Glen Clova Glen Clova occupies the valley of the River South Esk which rises on the slopes of Broad Cairn near the border with Aberdeenshire and flows southeastwards into the valley of Strathmore below the Braes of Angus. Glen Doll Beyond Glen Clova is Glen Doll, opening out to the Eastern Cairngorms and sporting the impressive mountains Mayer and Driesh; both Munros. There is an ancient track that starts in Glen Doll and reaches all the way to Braemar. The steep hills and conifer woodland of Glen Doll offer lots of walks. Loch Lee A short climb following a small burn near Cairn Lick leads to a great view of Loch Lee and of Carlochy of Lee, until this point, a hidden corrie loch.

This area, otherwise known as the ‘Big Tree Country’, is famous for its impressively tall trees and sumptuous heather-clad hills. These hills are often snow capped throughout the autumn, winter and spring months which only makes the contrast with its deep, fertile, flat glens all the more striking and dramatic. It also makes for some of the best skiing in Scotland.
