park life

No other National Park in the UK boasts the size, dramatic diversity or rare wildlife of the Cairngorms. Bigger than Luxembourg, rest assured you will find mountains high enough, valleys low enough and rivers wide enough; it’s the perfect place to go wild. Whether you fancy hopping through heather on a hilltop, cantering through moorlands or rambling through ancient Caledonian, pine-infused forests, you can in the Cairngorms. Wherever you go, you will be in the lap of nature, so be ready for close encounters of the furry, feathery kind.

On wheels, as you weave through the trees, wind whistling in your ear, you’re bound to spot a darting roe deer, or scuttling red squirrel. Take it a bit slower and you’ll have time to stop and gaze upwards, per chance setting eyes on a Golden Eagle or Osprey. Even better, hire one of our expert guides to ensure you get that jaw-dropping snap.

Stunning Park Statistics: 47% is ‘Wild Land’ At minus 27.2 degrees centigrade, Braemar shares the record for the lowest temperature recorded in the UK

Home to the UK’s only herd of free roaming reindeer Europe’s last private army, The Atholl Highlands, is based at Blair Castle

Food and Drink is just as varied and exciting as the landscape. Venison from our roaming deer is a must-try, as is fresh fish from our crystal clear rivers and lochs. Whisky is our speciality, but we’re getting pretty good at Gin too! And, with all the fresh air you’re going to be getting, refuelling at one of our cosy cafes with cake and a cuppa is essential.

Fun at the Lech

Failte (welcome in gaelic). Legendary Highland hospitality awaits you. The area is renowned for its friendly characters, full of local banter and enthusiasm. And whether it’s a luxury break you’re after, complete with turrets, roaring fire and hot tub, or an off-grid experience with nothing but nature, we have it all. You can even stay in a castle, on a duck pond or in an old train carriage, if that tickles your fancy. Just remember to book in advance as we have many returning holidaymakers and beds get booked up quickly.

Map page 12 – grid ref B3 A haven for hikers, its iconic distillery signals the gateway to the Highlands. Coming from the South over the Drumochter Pass, you’ll feel butterflies in your stomach as you set eyes on the iconic, gleaming white Dalwhinnie Distillery that welcomes you to the Highlands. Because of this location, sitting at the head of Loch Ericht, in bygone days it was a prime spot for travellers to refuel; hence its name in Gaelic means ‘meeting place’. Today, it’s perfect for walkers and bikers, with routes along the River Truim, into the Monadhliath Mountains and to Culra Bothy at the foot of the Ben Alder Munro. It’s also on the Sustrans National Cycle Route No.7, which runs from Glasgow to Inverness. Another activity on offer is fishing. The fact it has a train station makes it easily accessible.

The Cairngorms is home to 3 of Scotlands 5 ski centres (Cairngorm Mountain, The Lecht and Glenshee) giving you plenty of piste to play on. It’s not just skiing and snowboarding on offer either; alternatives such as snowshoeing, cross country skiing, sledging and ice climbing are also popular. There’s a lively après-ski scene, too, with festivals like Groove Cairngorm and Braemar Mountain Festival taking place during the season. “In the heart of the Scottish Highlands is the Cairngorms, winter here shows off the landscape’s raw beauty with its great glens, vast lochs and imposing peaks.” Ellie Harrison, Countryfile TV presenter 26 : www.visitcairngorms.com

Laggan Map page 12 – grid ref B4 www.laggan.com Surrounded by the stunning Monadhliath Mountains, home to mountain biking heaven Wolftrax. The biggest pull to Laggan for many is its superb mountain biking centre, Wolftrax, which promises ‘trails with bite’. A day out here is full of fun for all the family, whether you’re gently flowing down a ‘green’ or seeking thrills and spills on a ‘black’. With no cost to ride the trails, it’s also great value and you’ll find everything you need on site including bike hire, a test trail and a cosy café.

There’s a weath of well maintained paths but, if you venture off them a bit, you’re likely to glimpse golden eagles, ospreys, otters, deer and pine marten, as well as a wonderful display of flora and fauna. For budding botanists and historians, Laggan also delivers, with its Creag Meagaidh Nature Reserve and range of pictish relics, such as the Dun da Lambh Fort.

But don’t think Laggan is just about the biking. You can also fish, ramble, mountaineer, pony trek, canoe and ski tour!

Newtonmore

© Highland Folk Museum

Map page 12 – grid ref C5 www.newtonmore.com A beautiful backdrop for TV hits Monarch of the Glen and Outlander, this fun-filled village is famous for its Highland Folk Museum and ‘Wildcat’ treasure trail. Wander around this spectacular village, which is nestled above the flood plain of the River Spey, and it may seem strangely familiar. That’s because it was one of the prime locations for hit TV series Monarch of the Glen and Outlander. Indeed, one of the most marvellous, simple pleasures here – enjoyed by all ages, but especially young kids and excitable grannies – is the ‘Wildcat Experience’. You can see delighted participants as they spot wildcats, painted by the locals, which are dotted all over the village. There is also a heritage trail, and the Clan Macpherson Museum, for those who want to know more about the history here. More ‘edutainment’ (that’s education plus entertainment!) is to be had at the free-of-charge Highland Folk Museum, much loved particularly for its old fashioned sweet shop, excellent playpark and charming recreation of early Highland life. Not only that, Newtonmore has an 18 hole golf course (designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest), a full range of accommodation, a supermarket, Post Office and various eateries. All this in a stunning setting of the Monadhliath Mountains, surrounded by woodland with an abundance of wildlife. 30 : www.visitcairngorms.com

Kincraig

Roar with the lions and purr with the polar bears at the Highland Wildlife Park before a paddle and pint at picture-perfect Loch Insh Watersports Centre. You’ll not believe how much there is to do in this small village between Aviemore and Kingussie. In the morning you can be ogling the Amur Tigers at the Highland Wildlife Park or watching the working sheepdogs at Leault Farm and, in the afternoon, aboard a paddle board floating along the River Spey. That’s not the only sport available at the watersports centre, either, there’s also dry-slope skiing, archery, mountain biking, orienteering, sailing and windsurfing. And, if you just want to chill and watch the action on the loch, the views from the boathouse restaurant/café are unrivalled. Nearby, too, there’s gliding and golfing, as well as the popular Scuplture Trail and favourite swimming spots at Feshiebridge. Not forgetting historic local landmarks like the two churches and the nextdoor Insh Marshes National Nature Reserve, this village has something for everyone, from the quiet-seeker to the thrill-seeker. The latter can find more adrenaline-fuelled activities at the neighbouring Alvie, such as the 2km+ zip wire. Whizzing through the ancient Caledonian pine forests gives you a unique and exhilarating view of the Cairngorm mountain range! www.visitcairngorms.com

Head to Aviemore for buzz, café culture and more outdoor expertise than you can shake a ski at! You’ll also find a cinema, swimming pools, supermarkets and softplay here, not to mention a charming train station which makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time (or into a Harry Potter set). But this is no ordinary shopping centre; you’re always a stone’s throw away from natural tranquillity. Hike Craigellachie for awe-inspiring views of the entire valley, spotting Peregrine Falcons and Buzzards as you go. Or, take a short drive up the "ski road" towards Cairngorm Mountain and feast your eyes on the magical charm of Rothiemuchus and the tranquil beauty of Glenmore.

Carrbridge

Map page 6 -grid ref E7 www.carrbridge.com Kids’ dream Landmark Adventure Park steals the show here, along with the oldest bridge in the Highlands. On entering Carrbridge, it’s not uncommon to hear the squeals of delight from children discovering the joy of one of Scotland’s most loved adventure parks, Landmark. And it’s not just children you’ll hear. One of the best things about Landmark is how attractively it is designed so it appeals to all, young and old, with a mixture of the high octane (ie rollercoasters) and the more calming (tree top trail and butterfly farm).

One of the first Scottish ski villages, Carrbridge dates back hundreds of years and one of the most beautiful reminders of this rich history is its unique packhorse bridge – the oldest stone bridge in the Highlands. A thriving community, you’ll find pubs, cafes, hotels and B&Bs, as well as a busy social calendar. For instance, the area is worldrenowned for its fascinating annual ‘Carve Carrbridge’, the Scottish Open Chainsaw Carving Championship. Another quirky must-see experience is its ‘Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship’, eagerly followed across the globe by food connoisseurs. If you want to get away from the crowds, you can easily do that too here. Sitting amid the forest, you have instant access to a wealth of stunning walks, wildlife trails and biking routes. www.visitcairngorms.com

This gem of a place has tons of character and things to do. For starters, its nickname is “the osprey village” because it is one of the best places in Scotland to spot these magnificent birds, with an entire centre dedicated to informing the public about the breed, at the nearby Loch Garten. In addition to the centre, this loch is well worth a trip because of its breathtaking beauty, and can be easily navigated by foot or bike. Another of its defining landmarks is the oldie worldie steam railway station, which sits in the middle of the village, next to the Boat Hotel. Golfers also flock here to play the superb 18 hole golf course, enjoying the magical views over the Cairngorm valley as they play, an experience

which is perfectly topped off with a refreshment at the comfortable club on completion. This community is renowned in the valley for its can-do attitude and runs a hugely diverse and entertaining events programme at its community hall. Visitors are also extremely well served when it comes to food and drink, with not only a fine dining establishment, Anderson’s, but also several cafes, including 1896 Gallery which showcases local artistry. There’s also a friendly and well-stocked general store/Post Office and a community garden, once featured on TV show Beechgrove Garden, which helped design it.

Dulnain Bridge

@ lara_jo88

Map page 12 - grid ref F8 www.dulnainbridge.com Home to the fictitious “Glenbogle Station” (off the telly!), an ancient Pictish settlement and, of course, a bridge which dates back to the 18th century. This wee village is centred around – yes, you’ve guessed it – a bridge, which splits the village into Morayshire on one side (known as the Dulnain side) and Invernes-shire on the other (identified as crofting community Skye-of-Curr). This 18th century, single arched bridge crosses the River Dulnain, which flows through the village in a deep, striking gorge. History buffs will also enjoy checking out the remains of a Pictish settlement, the twelve ancient lime kilns and a hut circle dating back to the Bronze/Iron age.

This is an ideal location for rest and relaxation, surrounded by the Caledonian pine forests and vast views of the Cairngorm valley. There’s nothing better to unwind than a wander through the woods spotting the wildlife living here, such as capercaillie, Scottish crossbill, osprey and red squirrel. Similarly, botanists will particularly love the Curr Wood, home to the country’s largest population of twinflower. The train stops just outside Dulnain at Broomhill, otherwise known as the fictitious Glenbogle Station from the TV series Monarch of the Glen. Although small, you’ll still find plenty of B&Bs here, as well as a luxury boutique hotel, a Post Office/shop and a garage. And, as it’s only a few miles from Grantown-on-Spey, a wealth of convenience stores are on your doorstep. www.visitcairngorms.com

e g d i r B y h t e N Map page 13 -grid ref G7 www.nethybridge.com Nestled in the woods, Nethy boasts a butcher, 4 bridges (really!), a golf course, a castle and one of the most popular Highland Games. Affectionately known as ‘the forest village’, Nethy Bridge is a firm favourite with holiday-makers and has been since Victorian times. As a result, there are plenty of places to stay of all shapes, sizes and locations (hot tubs are aplenty in this neck of the woods!). One of the reasons it’s so popular is that, while in easy reach of the main attractions in the area, it has a real aura of calm and tranquillity. Miles of popular woodland walks, clearly marked, pass through Nethy, such as the Speyside Way. For those who want more guidance watching the wildlife while they walk, there is an RSPB ranger service in the community centre, too.

The village has enough conveniences to make you self- sufficient, so you can hunker down here in peace, such as a local shop, Post Office, café, butcher and farm shop. Remove reference to farm shop in brackets. Nethy has plenty of activities to keep you busy, such as bowling, golf, tennis and its own Castle – Castle Roy, an 11th century fort built by Clan Comyn. According to experts, it’s one of the oldest unchanged castles of its ilk in Scotland. Another active community, locals run a lively events calendar including the arts and crafts focused Spring Gathering in May and the Abernethy Highland Games on the second Saturday in August. www.visitcairngorms.com : 85

Map page 13 -grid ref G8 www.grantownonspey.com With its thriving high street, lined with cafes, restaurants, a gallery, a museum and shops, this is the perfect location for the beginning or at the finish line, of your journey on the Snow Roads. It’s testament to how friendly and familiar that Grantown feels that many holiday-makers end up calling it their ‘home from home’. Another major draw of the village is the amazing choice and diversity of things to do. Grantown’s thriving Highland high street has its own unique character, with quirky cafes and unusual shops, with many places to sit down and relax with a cuppa and cake, including hotels. It even boasts

an award-winning bookshop, antiques shop, museum, traditional ironmongers and a pub famous for its legendary pie and chips! There’s always something going on in Grantown, too, especially since new events venue The Pagoda (a building worth a visit in itself) opened its doors. The biggest event, however, when all the town gets involved is its renowned Hogmanay celebrations, which take place in the Square. Of course, set in a stunning location on the banks of the River Spey, there is a glut of outdoor activities available too. There’s easy access to two national walking routes (the Speyway and Davaway), salmon and trout fishing, mountain biking and walking in nearby Anagach Woods, golf, tennis and an activity centre. www.visitcairngorms.com

Cromdale SERVICES Map page 13 -grid ref G8 www.visitcairngorms.com Steeped in history, it’s famous for battles, stunning surrounding hills (complete with a commemorative ‘piper’s stone’ for the piper mid-battle) and artisan Scottish gin Caorunn. This village is immortalised in the song the ‘Haughs of Cromdale’ (haughs means low ground) inspired by the 1690 battle of Cromdale, and has close (and gory) connections with the Jacobite uprisings. The story goes that the Jacobites were ambushed and slain in their sleep by dragoon guards, with the defeat putting an end to the Jacobite rebellion in the Highlands. The site has 94 : www.visitcairngorms.com

such importance in Scottish history that the battlefield is protected by Historic Scotland. But Cromdale is not all blood and guts. There’s plenty of peace and harmony to be had here. The village sits in the scenic setting between the Cromdale hills and the River Spey. Scale the ‘Coronation Cairn’ and you’ll be richly rewarded by magnificent views of the Spey valley and, to the north, the coast. Fishing is a favourite past-time, as is gin touring at the trendy artisan distillery Caorunn, a premium label growing rapidly in popularity. This is produced at the Balmenach Distillery, established back in 1824.

Tomintoul

Map page 13 – grid ref H7 The ‘highest’ village in the Cairngorms at 1164 ft, Tomintoul oozes history and rugged grandeur, having been founded by a Duke in the 18th century.

Tomintoul has the most concentrated population in the area, which is reflected in the abundance of amenities on its main street such as a deli, art gallery, a post office, gift shops, cafes, restaurants, a Discovery Centre and – of course – a whisky shop.

It makes an ideal base for exploring the Highlands because of its central position, in the heart of the Glenlivet Estate, halfway between Aviemore and Royal Deeside.

A favourite visitor activity is scaling the town’s own Munro, Ben Avon, followed by a tipple in one of the local eateries. In summer, the town also plays host to a walking festival.

www.tomintoul.glenlivet-cairngorms.co.uk

In addition to its reputation as a premier spot for mountain biking, offering over 100 miles of routes, the village is also within easy reach of a host of other sports: skiing at The Lecht, clay pigeon shooting, pony trekking and salmon fishing.

Map page 13 – grid ref H7 www.glenlivet-cairngorms.co.uk Glenlivet may be synonymous with whisky – it is home to four whisky distilleries, after all - but the village is increasingly gaining a reputation as the best place to mountain bike in Scotland too. Undoubtedly one reason for this is its stunning backdrop for outdoor activities. But it’s also shrouded in a rich history and you can see relics of this everywhere, such as at the nearby ‘Wolf’s Lair’ at Drumin Castle and the Pack Horse Bridge. In August, too, its village hall transforms into a community run café serving delicious home baking and lunches – Highland hospitality at its best! “The trek was AWESOME. A photographer’s dream, especially in spring and autumn, when the contrasts are most marked. Bellabeg is the largest of the small communities which are scattered throughout Strathdon. An annual spectacle not to be missed here is, on the fourth Saturday of August, when the ‘Clansmen of the Lonach Highlanders’ march through the village for the Lonach Gathering – the area’s unique take on the Highland games, renowned for its friendly atmosphere. @ Glen Tanar Estate

Dinnet Map page 13 – grid ref K5 www.visitballater.com www.discoverroyaldeeside.com A small village which packs a punch, Dinnet wows its visitors with idyllic vistas, rugged crags and luscious lochs (Loch Kinord and Loch Davan are the biggest). It’s particularly popular with holiday-makers because of its ideal situation next to the Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve and Glen Tanar Estate, and they are well catered for by local amenities such as restaurants and shops. 106 : www.visitcairngorms.com

“What a gem of a place. Been on a few walks in my time but the tranquility and scenery!!” Tripadvisor

As the reserve is classified ‘of special scientific interest’, you have a good chance here of spotting an osprey, deer or perhaps an otter. Indeed, the whole area is a magical mecca for wildlife. The Glen Tanar estate is also one of the most popular sites for eager fishermen in pursuit of trout and salmon. As well as its royal connections – Queen Victoria was a fan – Dinnet also has a rich literary history. The great romantic poet Byron, for instance, spent time here as a boy and later encapsulated its beauty in his verse. There are many sites to explore for the budding historian or archaeologist too, like Kinord Cross, Tomnaverie Stone Circle, Burn O’Vat and the Tullich Symbol Stone. The Crannog at the north end of Loch Kinord was even supposedly once a prison, affording inmates some of the best views in Britain!

SERVICES

Map page 13 – grid ref H4 www.braemarscotland.co.uk While Braemar is the highest, most mountainous parish in the UK, it’s actually its abundance of wonderful, wildlife-filled, low level walking that makes this area such a perfect choice for ramblers. Visitors delight in these wellsignposted walks which boast spectacular views of the many Munroes (mountains over 3,000ft) which surround the village.

Braemar & Crathie

These views are, more often than not, accompanied by the sound of roaring red deer stags, especially during the rutting season, around October. It’s also an ideal stop-over for those planning to walk from the Lairig Ghru through to Jock’s Road and into Angus. Or for those who love outdoor sporting activities – particularly golf buffs who can boast they’ve played Scotland’s ‘highest’ 18 hole course here! Another lure for holiday makers is the rich heritage, in evidence all around the area. There are two castles, for instance, Braemar Castle and the ruins of Kindrochit Castle, built by Malcolm Canmore, a medieval King of the Scots.

If you’re visiting in September, then be sure not to miss the legendary Braemar Gathering (games), which takes place on the first Saturday, and is traditionally when Monarchs were ‘acclaimed’ as Chieftains. If you’re lucky, you might meet the Queen, whose castle, Balmoral, is in the small hamlet of Crathie, and who is a devoted attendee. For those interested in wildlife, Braemar is a great base for spotting stags, roe deer, red squirrels and golden eagles. Visitors can explore the area on foot or by taking part in any of the wide range of activities on offer including pony trekking, climbing, mountain biking, hang-gliding, skiing or golf. Field sportsmen are spoiled for choice, having easy access to stalking and shooting, as well as to brown trout and salmon angling.

www.glenofthefairies.co.uk Aptly known as ‘Gleann Shith’ (‘Glen of the Fairies’ in Gaelic) on account of its magical feel, Glenshee is hard to beat when it comes to offering a mix of yin and yang. On the one hand it’s home to one of Scotland’s ski resorts, on the other it’s a wilderness of wildlife where you can truly get away from it all. The ski area boasts the largest lift system in Britain with over 38 runs over three valleys, for skiers and boarders of all abilities. Its wild, rugged backdrop adds extra thrills for any explorer – on skis, on foot or on bike – adventuring into the mountains.
