elcome to the Cairngorms National Park and your August edition of What’s On, the free events guide.
The valley has a laid-back, jubilant vibe at this time of year with some stand-out annual events like Thunder in the Glens, the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Rally (23rd-26th). There’s also the Land Rover Blair Castle International Horse Trials on the same weekend and a number of Highland Games peppered throughout the month (see VisitCairngorms.com’s online calendar for all events). Grantown Show on Thursday 8th is a favourite family day out, complete with livestock competitions, music and a pageant procession (this year’s theme is superheroes!). So too is the open chainsaw carving competition, ‘Carve Carrbridge’, on the 31st. If you’re interested in history, check out the Highland Folk Museum’s various ‘Heritage in Action’ days or Braemar Castle’s Jacobite re-enactment on the 11th. In addition to these annual showstoppers, all the regular free events are taking place like live music in the Cairngorm Hotel and Winking Owl, and a raft of ranger events.
