elcome to the Cairngorms National Park and your December edition of What’s On, the free events guide. ‘Tis the time of year to be jolly and that’s easy in December in the Cairngorms National Park because there are so many things to smile about. Not least the many opportunities to meet the jolliest man in town, Santa himself, whether that be at Cairngorm Reindeer Centre, the Highland Wildlife Park or on the Santa Express, courtesy of Strathspey Railway. If you miss him there, don’t worry, he’ll be in attendance at the many and varied Christmas fairs and markets happening throughout the valley during the month. He’s an energetic chap, too, and if you’re feeling similarly sporty, you can even join a gaggle of Santas at the Aviemore Santa Run (14th) or for Mike’s Bike’s Santa Cycle (10th). But if you want to escape Christmas awhile then, as well as jumping on a bike or going on a hike to get away from it all, there are also lots of non-festive events happening too. For instance, Newtonmore is airing films throughout December (check out www.screenmachine.co.uk) and the Boat of Garten Community Hall and Grantown’s Grant Arms have a varied programme of events running. Of course there’s all the usual live music, art galleries and distilleries ready to give you an extra warm welcome, too. Nowhere does Christmas like the Cairngorms!
