W
elcome to the Cairngorms National Park and your July edition of What’s On, the free events guide. With summer in full swing, there are lots of reasons to celebrate, not least Loch Garten Osprey Centre’s 60th birthday. To mark this occasion, on 20th and 21st, the centre is hosting a party complete with vintage Osprey fun, games and, naturally, cake. We are also well and truly into Highland games season, with the Braemar Junior Highland Games taking place on Saturday 13th and the Tomintoul Highland Games and Tom na Bat hill race on Saturday 20th. If you want even more of a sporting challenge, then duathlon the Corrieyairack Challenge on the 6th is always a popular competition. Or if you’re after something more sedate and relaxing, then there are plenty of chances to get crafty this month too, at events like the Ballater Craft Fair on 6th-7th. For culture vultures there are fantastic, atmospheric shows like Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing at Balmoral Castle on the 20th. Summer needn’t be a strain on your wallet, either, as there are so many great, free events. For instance, the Steam Weekend Miniature Steam Engines and Vintage Farm Machinery Rally at Grantown East on 20-21 July is bound to be a cracking family day out. Then, throughout the month, there are many free ranger events, as well as free live music at numerous venues throughout the Park. The Cairngorms National Park has something for everyone!
