What’s On W in september
elcome to the Cairngorms National Park and your September edition of What’s On, the free events guide. If you thought the Park was going to slow down after the summer holidays and kids returning to school - think again! September is full of festivals, music, nature and sporting challenges. Friday 6th marks the launch of the inaugural Badenoch Festival, which showcases the area’s rich history until 22nd (see our events listings on page 4-10 and Insider’s Guide on page 14). The ever popular Highland Folk Museum, for instance, is running a host of colourful activities throughout the month, such as the free ‘Stonemasons in Action’ on 18th-19th. Another festival, this one celebrating traditional music, the ‘Fiddler of Strathspey’, now in its 5th year, runs in Grantown-on-Spey from 20th-22nd. And there are two exciting festivals dedicated to food and drink: the new Aviemore BIG MIX (also 20th-22nd) and the Blair Atholl Music & Scottish Craft Beer Festival (21st). There’s also a new female-focused mountain biking festival on the 1st, Ride Like A Grrl. Don’t forget the right Royal Braemar Gathering takes place on 7th, too, which draws big crowds including, often, the Queen herself. All this in addition to all the usual array of art galleries and live music events, often completely free of charge. The Cairngorms National Park has something for everyone!
