WHAT’S ON GUIDE BRIGHTON & HOVE Fenech Soler
Half way through the year and there’s still so much to look forward to. In the coming months Brighton will be host to Stephen Merchant’s first ever live tour, a month-long convention celebrating Brighton’s digital culture, zombie walks, dub-step and probably the most miserable man in pop. As ever, it is well advised that you get in early for all of these events, as they’ll simply sell out otherwise!
Fri 7th Oct, Concorde2 When lead singer Ben Duffy was diagnosed with early stage cancer earlier in the year, Fenech Soler had to cancel their UK tour, including a show at Brighton’s Concorde 2 in April. After receiving treatment, Ben is back with the band and the tour is back on. The electro-pop four-piece will be playing a rescheduled show at the famous seafront venue this October. concorde2.co.uk
Tom Hasson: future@whatsonguide.co.uk
Ron Sexsmith
Beach Of The Dead V
Wed 31st Aug, Komedia He may well look like the most miserable man in pop music right now, but Ron Sexsmith’s music is that of glorious beauty. He is revered by some of the greatest names in show business from Bob Dylan and Elton John to Steve Earl and Elvis Costello. His show at the Komedia this August is guaranteed to be a highlight of the year. komedia.co.uk/Brighton
Sat 30th Oct It may only be July but Brighton’s favourite Halloween tradition, Beach Of The Dead will be returning for its fifth year of stalking the streets this October. The event is open to anyone who wants to dress up like a zombie, walk the streets of Brighton and have fun. Now’s the time to start planning your outfit; blood, gore and all. beachofthedead.com
Brighton Digital Festival
Katy B
Thurs 1st – Fri 30th Sept The month long celebration of digital culture happening this September is going to be an exciting one. With exhibitions, meet-ups, workshops and outdoor events running alongside Brighton’s iconic digital design conferences there is sure to be something for everyone to get involved in. Tickets for each event will be on sale soon so head to the website to decide which ones you’ll want. brightondigitalfestival.co.uk
Mon 31st Oct, Brighton Dome Brit School graduate Katy B has enjoyed a very successful 2011 so far. With the huge hit that was ‘Katy B On A Mission’, she secured herself the title of the Queen of Dubstep and is showing no signs of abdicating any time soon. Bringing her tour to Brighton this Halloween, it is sure to be an incredible night - costumes optional. brightondome.org
Cannabis Corpse
Stephen Merchant Live
Fri 2nd Sept, The Hydrant Although I confused one band with their influencers last month, I am again going to recommend Cannabis Corpse as a gig you simply can’t afford to miss this year. Known for their love of Cannibal Corpse and smoking weed, their brand of old school death metal is an incredible spectacle. Get hold of tickets for this show soon, you won’t regret it. thehydrantbrighton.co.uk
Sat 19th Nov, Brighton Centre The BAFTA, Golden Globe and Emmy award winning co-creator of The Office and Extras will be embarking on his first ever stand-up comedy tour this year. For one night only, Brighton will host to his ‘Hello Ladies’ tour this November in what is sure to be a night of full-blown hilarity. I’d advise getting tickets soon, they’re selling out fast! brightoncentre.co.uk

WHAT’S ON GUIDE BRIGHTON & HOVE Soundwaves Festival
It may be a bit of a cliché but there’s no denying that debating the weather is one of our favourite national pastimes. I’ve lost count of the number of people I’ve overheard speculating about what kind of a summer we’ll get this year. Well now it’s here, so my advice is to all you weather watchers is forget about checking the clouds and start checking out the listings instead!
Thurs 14th – Sun 17th Soundwaves Festival is no ordinary music festival. This three day event offers the chance to dip or dive into an alternative world of cutting edge new music, sound art and participatory experiences designed to intrigue and inspire the listener. With events, experimental collaborations, interactive installations and workshops happening at various venues across the city. You’ll need to check the website for times and locations. arts.brighton.ac.uk/soundwaves

Paddle Round The Pier
Joe Filisko
Sat 2nd & Sun 3rd, Hove Lawns Europe’s largest free beach festival lands on Hove beachfront once again this month and it’s set to be bigger and better than ever. More skate ramps, BMX displays, water sports, exhibitions, stalls and live music, the Disability Accessibility Beach and, of course, the internationally recognised paddle round the pier itself on Sunday should all make for the perfect weekend’s entertainment. paddleroundthepier.com
Fri 29th, The Brunswick Without question one of the best blues harmonica players in the world, Joe Filisko returns to Brighton for what will be another sell-out show. His previous performances have been full houses with audiences amazed at the sheer craftsmanship of his magical playing and the staggering range of sounds that he can produce. Book ahead as there’ll be few seats left on the night. brunswickpub.co.uk
Twelfth Night
Lars Frederiksen & The Old Firm Casuals
Sat 9th, Queen’s Park Queen’s Park will be transformed into an elemental nightscape of illusion and experience to play host to Illyria Theatre Company’s outdoor production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. It promises to be an evening of romance, music and joy, but the last two years have sold out, so book early, take a picnic and enjoy a lovely summer evening in the company of the Bard. friendsofqueensparkbrighton.net
MusicDOC11
Sat 9th, The Basement This one-day festival brings together prominent documentary makers, historians and musicians alongside fans and broadcasters to explore and enjoy the current explosion in music documentary making. As well as showcasing new talent, seminal filmmakers and music, artists will discuss the history and appeal of ‘rockumentaries’ that take popular music as their central concern. They may even explain where Spinal Tap fits into all this! musicdoc.org.uk 6

Sun 31st, Digital Better known as the guitarist of American punk rockers Rancid, Lars Frederiksen describes his new side project The Old Firm Casuals as ‘American Oi!’. With support tonight from Control (formerly Intensive Care & Beerzone), Marching Orders and Skingraft, expect this to be in-your-face loud and totally lacking in any social graces … so I’ll see you down the front. yourfutureisdigital.com/brighton
Glyndebourne: Don Giovanni Sun 31st, Duke of York’s Picturehouse If you don’t have the time (or the requisite ‘folding’) to get out to the Glyndebourne Festival not to worry as the Duke of York’s have brought it to you. Of the three operas being screened over the summer, this highly acclaimed production of Mozart’s compulsive Don Giovanni, with its fire-and-brimstone climax, has to be the pick of the bunch. picturehouses.co.uk

Restaurant s The Townhouse
For me, July conjures up sunny thoughts of evening strolls out for alfresco dinners - maybe a cheeky mojito en route simply cooked, seasonal dishes followed by summery desserts with lashings of cream and fresh fruit. If you can squeeze summer indulgences, such as these, into your working week then you can do all this for less with the wonderful school night deals Brighton restaurants have to offer. Book online: www.Proudrestaurants.com
81-82 St James Street 01273 693216 With a celebratory nod to all things British, The Townhouse is the new Kemptown hotspot. From fillet steaks to hand-made goats cheese tartlets there is something to satisfy every palette. Top that off with a live pianist on Wednesday and Friday nights and live jazz every Sunday and you have an experience easy on the ears as well as the taste buds.

Newhaven Cormorant
Hello Readers, and welcome to my selection for the month of July. As well as some lovely events in our very own Brighton, there’s what promises to be a real treat for those of you willing to venture outside the city walls. And for anyone with small children, that scatological favourite the Mole Who Knew It Was None of His Business is on at the Dome on Sunday 3rd.
Sat 16th July, Newhaven Harbour There’s so much going on with this one I’m not even sure where to start: fireboats, floating sculptures, pyrotechnics, aerial feats, and a breathtaking finale. Brighton-based creative producers Zap Art and French street arts company Generik Vapeur have been working with local artists, community groups and educational organizations to put together a spectacle unlike anything ever seen in Newhaven before. brightonvisitor.com

Vinylman Record Fair
Lucha Future
Sun 17th, Komedia Is iTunes anathema to you? Do CDs make you see red? Is even the innocent cassette tape a cause for consternation? Then for goodness sake stop going on about it and get down to the Komedia on 17th where you and other likeminded enthusiasts can rummage to your heart’s content among a selection of good old fashioned vinyl LPs and seven inches. komedia.co.uk/brighton
Fri 1st & Sat 2nd, The Dome Any event described as “akin to a rock concert cranked to 11” (by Time Out) gets my vote and I for one cannot wait to see this extravaganza of high-flying acrobatics, special effects and pumping music. Cassandro, Blue Demon JR and Magno are among the 14 Luchadors doing battle at the Dome early this month. Let’s get ready to rumble! brightondome.org

Ryan Callanan
Agatha Christie’s Verdict
Until Mon 11th, Ink_d Art Gallery The artist otherwise known as RYCA is back at the Ink_d Gallery this summer for a solo show of his new work. The Symbols Won’t Save Us includes a selection of handmade works including silkscreen prints, micro-canvases and limited edition glass pieces. This collection explores the question of shape recognition and what happens when a symbol is removed from its everyday context. ink-d.co.uk
Mon 18th – Sat 23rd, Theatre Royal This promises to be a real classic from the Queen of Crime: a morally upright professor, an ‘invalid’ wife, a conniving minx, and murderous intentions left right and centre. I for one cannot wait to see the latest production from the Agatha Christie Theatre Company starring Susan Penhaligon, Robert Duncan and Peter Byrne of the Dixon of Dock Green fame. ambassadors.com
Ali Smith
Woman in Mind
Tues 12th, The Old Market You don’t need to have watched Come Dine With Me to know it’s not usual behaviour at a dinner party to lock yourself in your guests’ bedroom and refuse to come out. However, that is the premise of Ali Smith’s brilliant new novel There But For The, which she will be presenting this month, courtesy of City Books and The Old Market. city-books.co.uk
Sat 16th – Sat 23rd, New Venture Theatre Considered by many to be Alan Ayckbourn’s most powerful play, Woman in Mind is by turns disturbing, challenging and funny. The frustrated wife of a man of the cloth, Susan retreats into a rich dream world to escape the realities of her family life. When however this starts to overlap and collide with reality, Susan find herself in real danger. newventure.org.uk

WHAT’S ON GUIDE BRIGHTON & HOVE Croquet On The Lawn,
Summer in Brighton is never dull and neither is finding things to do with the kids. This fabulous city offers fun and entertainment for all ages, rain or shine. Here are just a few of our family-friendly favourites. Child Friendly Brighton and Hove (childfriendlybrighton.co.uk) is a comprehensive resource listing everything that is child friendly in Brighton and Hove, including events, activities, places to visit, places to eat, drink and sleep.
Preston Manor, Preston Drove, 03000 290900 The former residence of the Stanford Family, Preston Manor gives a fascinating insight into Edwardian and Victorian living. The suitable for all ages events throughout the year give greater insight into its rich history. For example, in July the Manor hosts ‘Croquet on the Lawn’, where you can play croquet Alice in Wonderland-style with flamingos for mallets and playing cards for hoops! brighton-hove-rpml.org.uk

Pavilion Buildings, 03000 290900 A personal favourite of mine, the Royal Pavilion is a majestic beauty both inside and out. It was built as the Prince Regent’s pleasure palace, and boasts stunning Indian architecture and interiors inspired by China. Admission fee includes a free audio guide, which also comes in an excellent children’s version. There are tea rooms inside the palace and a cafe outside in the beautiful Pavilion Gardens. brighton-hove-rpml.org.uk/RoyalPavilion

Zumba is the amazing fitness dance craze that is hitting every town hard. This month I decided to try out the Latin inspired, dance fitness party. Zumba originated in Colombia in the 1990s and is putting a smile on faces of all ages. I personally cannot think of a better way to lose weight, keep fit and have a laugh with friends on a dull, rainy Monday evening in Brighton. Donna Goatcher: lifestyle@whatsonguide.co.uk

Skateboarding has received a harsh rap over the years. People say it′s a ‘fad’ sport that’s ‘just for kids’, but i see it as something more. You will keep your fitness high, challenge your abilities and be constantly learning. Skateboarding lets you express yourself, It’s not all about doing tricks either. I know guys who haven’t done a trick in years but find the beauty of cruising just as rewarding. Magnus Asberg: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Skateboarding! This month I am taking on the mighty sport that is Skateboarding! Probably the hardest of them all. I have been skating since the late 70s, early 80s. Back then it was mostly just rolling around in the park and around town. Then we started building our own ramps and quarter pipes. That soon turned into building and riding the half pipes. Great fun! I did some competitons in the mid 80’s including the Swedish cup and the European Championships. They were a bit different to the one’s you see today! It was a time where we were learning and inventing new tricks every time we rode. Nowadays, skateboarding is at such an advanced level it’s unbelievable to see the tricks and jumps the riders pull off, one after the other. It is such a hard sport to become good at - only a few really master the art. It takes many years of practice and dedication, just hard work, you and your board! This month there are loads of skate events happening in Brighton including Paddle around the Pier (Hove lawns) who will be hosting some skateboarding action from the 1st to the 3rd of July and E tnies & Route One Skate Jam at the Hove Lagoon Skate Park on the 23rd of July. Happy rolling! 18

WHAT’S ON GUIDE BRIGHTON & HOVE Transformers: Dark of The Moon
In Robert Redford’s new film, The Conspirator (in Cinemas1st), Mary Surratt (Robin Wright) is the lone female charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination trial of Abraham Lincoln. As the whole nation turns against her, she is forced to rely on her reluctant lawyer to uncover the truth and save her life. With James McAvoy and Kevin Kline amongst the cast this will definitely be worth a look.
In Cinemas 1st The Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, are back in action, taking on the evil Decepticons, who are determined to avenge their defeat in 2009’s sequel. In this new movie, the Autobots and Decepticons become involved in a perilous space race between the U.S. and Russia, and once again Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) has to come to the aid of his robot friends.

The Resident On DVD, 4th Hilary Swank plays Dr. Juliet Devereau, a young, newly-single Emergency Room surgeon. After separating from her long term partner, Juliet feels vulnerable, but strives to appear confident. Her first task between hospital shifts is to find a new place to live within her limited budget. She comes across an extremely cheap and spacious apartment owned by the charming Max (Watchmen’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his grandfather (Christopher Lee) but, after a while, comes to the conclusion that she is not alone in her new place. ‘The Resident’, produced by the newly revived Hammer studio, and the first appearance of Lee in one of their films for thirty seven years, is a bit of a departure. Whereas
their most famous offerings were of the bodice ripping gothic horror variety this one is pure psychological fare. The tension builds nicely after the big reveal, Swank and Morgan both play their parts admirably but this does seem a curiously old fashioned film. It is quite telling that the first quote from the accompanying press blurb is from ‘Woman’s Own’, as ‘The Resident’ seems to strive on the outdated notion of females being vulnerable and helpless when there’s not a man around. I’m not sure whether today’s desensitised gore hungry viewer will get the full effect of this but for those with a hankering for a slow burning thriller there’s plenty here for you.

Captain America: The First Avenger In Cinemas, 29th Chris Evans is no stranger to the Marvel Universe, having played Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four films. As super soldier Steve Rogers battling the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) during World War 2, he becomes the last member introduced to make up the Avengers superteam which hits multiplexes in 2012. Cameos from Samuel L Jackson and Robert Downey Jr have been rumoured.
Cars 2 In Cinemas 22nd Star race car Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) are back and take their friendship to exciting new places in the first-ever World Grand Prix. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage.
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 In Cinemas 15th This is the final outing for everyone’s favourite wizard and one of the biggest franchises in cinema history. Harry, Ron, and Hermione go back to Hogwarts to find and destroy Voldemort’s final horcruxes. But when Voldemort finds out about their mission, the biggest battle begins and life as they know it will never be the same again. In 3D. 20

Brighton is not the place for homogony and chain store ethics. Although these chains put up a fight they often are left to look tatty and utilitarian next to their quirky Brighton born counterparts. And that is what I wish to celebrate here. I give you a list of Brighton’s most unique pubs that are all rich in character and offer something different to folks who are wonderfully different.
55/56 Surrey Street, 01273 328931 The pub that’s all about serving beer to the colourful array of characters that congregate here nightly. A classic, no-nonsense one-room interior and an outside terrace. A frequently rotating selection of beers on draught are available which usually features some favourites from the Dark Star Brewery. Handy proximity to the station and other great pubs makes this a bar crawl pub.

The Paris House
Hand in Hand
21 Western Road, 01273 724195 What once was the Jugglers is now a bar that takes the finest aspects of a French drinking establishment. Ultra clean, yet homely, with black and white tiled floors, wooden tables and chairs and fresh breads and pastries. Now they don’t serve pints. Don’t panic. What they serve instead is half pints in frosted mugs that, I guarantee, are a delight.
33 Upper St. James’s Street, 01273 699595 If we’re talking pubs with character then the Hand In Hand has to get a mention. About the size, feeling and ambience of a good living room with a bar that serves a large and transient selection of ales with the sound old school Trojan reggae being played in the background. In good weather the pub extends into the street.
Horse & Groom
The Lion & Lobster
129 Islingword Road, 1273 606546 Some people might take acceptation to a hairy Glaswegian flailing a Ukulele about and throwing sweets at you. Not I, though. A fantastically quirky little place that is wholly welcoming to all stripes of humanity. Enjoy some amazing bands from bluegrass to punk, or come and just chill out with a pint and friends and take in the music orientated décor.
24 Sillwood Street, 01273 327299 Not only does this pub exude a unique style and character it is considered one of the overall best pubs in Brighton. You want drink, loads of choice on the hand-drawns such as Harvey’s, Greene King and Hophead as well as a full wine, larger, cider and liquor list? You want food? They have their own fully-functioning restaurant upstairs.
The Black Dove
The Eddy,
74 St. James’ Street, 01273 671119
67a Upper Gloucester Road, 01273329540 Come in and eat from our new menu! The former Head Chef of La Fourchette & Brasserie Pascal is coming to The Eddy. The menu is Modern British, which means sourcing locally and seasonally and cooking globally. Our food is simple; that means that we focus on big flavours, everything on the plate is there for a reason and will be deliciously unfussy. theeddypub.co.uk
Step inside this gem and you’re in for the night. Gothic inspired furnishings of dark rich colours, velvet curtains, chandeliers and a fantastic use of space for seating in a relatively small space. Along one wall is a rendering of the eponymous bird. A truly inspirational cocktail list as well as all manner of beers are served. 22

Here & Now Tour
Caves
Sat 2nd, Brighton Centre If it’s the sound of the 80s that you’re after, then look no further than the Here And Now tour. Featuring the likes of Boy George, A Flock Of Seagulls and Jason Donovan, you’re in for a treat of hair-raising proportions. Break out the hairspray and Walkman and get ready to sing the tracks you hoped you’d forgotten the words to. here-and-now.info/hn_tours.html
Mon 18th, Prince Albert Described as a raw, melodic threepiece, Caves could be the perfect antidote for those of you who get a little sick and tired of bright and breezy sunshine pop around this time of year. With catchy tracks (which clock in at less than three minutes), the boy/girl vocals will leave you spinning before you know what’s hit you. Which is a good thing. myspace.com/wearecaves

Wed 6th, Dome Concert Hall What can be said of the Eels that hasn’t already been said? Not much, so that makes this preview a little easier. You know the drill with these guys if it’s excellent blues-tinged rock you’re after, then catch Mark Oliver Everett (or ‘E’) and various other Eel affiliates. The last tour E handed out ice cream to the crowd - here’s hoping. eelstheband.com

Sat 16th, Coalition The Vivian Girls are an indie-rock girl trio from Brooklyn, NY, and they come highly recommended. Following rave reviews and underground success on a number of US college rock stations, they’ll be heading to our coast to deal out a little shoe-gazing noise-pop as a perfect compliment to (hopefully) beautiful summer sunshine. If you’re a fan of Best Coat, check the Girls out. freewebs.com/viviangirls
Sun 31st, Concorde2 Recognised as one of the foremost British punk bands of the last 10 years, Capdown are bringing their ska-punk offerings to Concorde 2 at the month’s end. Mixing hardcore punk, dance and ska beats to form a potent dancefloor mix, the band are back after splitting in 2007. Guilty Pleasures Club Tropicana Beach Party
I have been told it’s a quiet month for clubbing but there still seems to be plenty on offer. Keep your eyes open for lots of clubs moving the action outside. Terrace parties are in abundance as well as impromptu beach parties so you may well find yourself sidetracked whilst on your way to your favourite club. That’s one of the reasons why Brighton has such a great club scene.
