futureevents The first time I sat down to write this section was around six months ago. As one who deals with the future, looking back isn’t something I’m used to. But one thing’s certain, trying to convince people to leave their houses on a wet November evening is tough work. Now it’s summer, there’s so much going on at high season this year, I can’t see over its head into autumn… Plum Woodard: future@whatsonguide.co.uk

Shakedown Sat 19th July, Waterhall Park The fourth and biggest year yet for Brighton’s premier day festival is set to explode this July with headliners Basement Jaxx leading the charge. Joined by MK, Groove Armada, Wilkinson, and many others, whilst taking place in the serene Waterhall, just a stone’s throw from the city centre, there is no reason for locals not to show the world how hard we party! shakedown.co.uk

Doggy Pride Sun 20th July, Hove RFC, Shirley Drive A day of fun and barking frolics, as dogs and dog lovers come together and shine with Pride. In association with Coastway Veterinary Group and The Dogs Trust, Doggy Pride 2014 features awards for numerous categories, stalls and a glamorous catwalk doggy fashion show. (We recognise how tempting it is to flirt with a raft of euphemisms, but it’s just not our doggy style.) brighton-pride.org

Pride Sat 2nd Aug, Preston Park The world famous Brighton Pride returns this summer with all the fabulous trimmings. Republica will furnish the event with its headliner, and although the hub of the event takes place in Preston Park, tributary attractions pepper the city all over. Get involved with the traditional – and glorious – parade, and the LGBT film festival at the Duke of York’s (19th July to 4th August). brighton-pride.org 4

Thurs 14th Aug, Prince Albert These guys are the word, and if you haven’t caught a glimpse yet, then August at the Albert is your chance. The Massachusetts four-piece come to the UK this summer with a small eight-date tour, wielding their musthave second album, Major Arcana. If the likes of Pavement and Pixies whet your whistle, then this is your kind of gig concert type affair. seetickets.com

Mod Weekender Fri 22nd Aug - Sun 24th Aug, Volks No sunny bank holiday would be complete without the mellifluous hum of an army of scooters and a heady miasma of two-stroke fumes. The Mod Weekender is the stuff of legend upon which much of Brighton’s reputation is built, and this year marks the movement’s 50th anniversary. The event’s main hubs are located at the Volks club and Komedia. newuntouchables.com

Freddie Gibbs Mon 1st Sept, Komedia Hailing from a disheveled corner of the Midwest, Freddie’s music is a play-by-play of black politics. Gibbs speaks on behalf of a silent minority, describing a crumbling metropolis on which socio-political concern has turned a blind eye. Having triumphantly won over discerning audiences at SXSW - a critical bridge few rappers have crossed – Freddie is about to embark on a massive US tour. komedia.co.uk/brighton

Dave Gorman Sat 11th Oct, The Dome Notably titling his upcoming tour ‘Dave Gorman Gets Straight to the Point (The PowerPoint)’, this unusual and all-new show follows the phenomenal success of his critically acclaimed UK tour, ‘Dave Gorman’s PowerPoint Presentation’, which included a sold-out five night run at London’s Southbank Centre. Don’t worry; you won’t need to take notes and you almost certainly won’t be tested on it later. brightondome.org

junefocus That yellow round thing glowing in the sky is sun! I thought I should point this out in case anyone was wondering. Even though I burn in little more than a half hour, I love it. So let’s slap on the sunblock to go to Eastbourne for the tennis and spend some inside recuperation time attending the other events. I’ve even got something to tickle parts the others could never meet! Kairen Kemp: focus@whatsonguide.co.uk

The Comedy Of Errors

Tues 10th, Fri 13th & Sat 14th, Theatre Royal Nobody does Shakespeare like Edward Hall’s all male company, Propeller! Two sets of estranged twins, separated at birth, find themselves in the same city 25 years later with hilarious consequences. A series of mistaken identities, assumed personas and wild mishaps bring a family crisis – so complicated that time itself loses the plot – into heartwarming focus. theambassadors.com

Little Barrie Thurs 12th, Bermuda Triangle This trio best described as stripped down Soul/Funk/R&B/Garage rock jamband, fronted by ever in-demand guitarist/vocalist Barrie Cadogan, bassist Lewis Wharton and drummer Virgil Howe , are unleashing their 4th album, ‘Shadow.’ Their first release for Tummy Touch, who published their last album, again co-produced with Edwyn Collins, engineer Seb Lewsley and Shawn Lee mixing. bermudatriangle.co.uk

Rod Stewart Fri 13th , Amex Stadium If you think he’s sexy and you love his body, then Friday 13th June is your lucky day. 18 years since his last performance in Brighton back in 1996, the 68-year-old “buffoon-haired mod” takes to the Amex Stadium to perform his greatest hits as part of his tour celebrating 50 years in music: apposite in that he’s mad as frogs about football. ticketmaster.co.uk 6

filmclub

filmclub If you can’t afford to see bands on a big stage look out for some on the big screen this month. ‘PULP: A Film About Life, Death and Supermarkets’ (7th) documents the indie band as they play their last UK concert in their hometown of Sheffield and punk lunatic John Otway gives his tips on survival in the music business in ‘Rock and Roll’s Greatest Failure: Otway The Movie’ (29th). Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk

Brighton Big Screen Situated on Brighton Beach right next to the Volks Railway, this free outdoor Cinema will showcase a mixture of movie classics and recent hits on a gigantic 40sqm screen. Films include ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’, ‘The Lego Movie’, ‘Dirty Dancing’ and ‘Jaws’ alongside top live sporting events including the World Cup, the Rugby, Wimbledon and the British Grand Prix. There will also be a selection from local filmmakers.

22 Jump Street 6th, In Cinemas 2012’s ’21 Jump Street’ was a big screen adaptation of the TV series that first brought Johnny Depp to the attention of the world. The sequel reunites Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as undercover detectives who, after graduating high school, turn their attentions to a local college’s wrongdoings. If you were a fan of the first one there will be plenty here to enjoy.

Grace of Monaco 6th, In Cinemas Nicole Kidman stars as the 50’s America’s favourite fairytale princess, Grace Kelly, in this biopic from French director Olivier Dahan who brought us the acclaimed ‘La Vie en Rose’. Tim Roth plays Prince Rainier III alongside a stellar cast that includes Frank Langella, Derek Jacobi, Robert Lindsay and Parker Posey. Don’t be surprised if this fares well when it comes time for the Oscars. 14

Devil’s Knot 13th, In Cinemas This crime thriller is based on Mara Leveritt’s book that tells the true story of the West Memphis Three, who were wrongly convicted for killing three young boys in 1993 and sentenced to life in prison. Colin Firth, Dane DeHaan, Bruce Greenwood and Reece Witherspoon star which, although the film has not been particularly well received critically, should entice a few people into the cinema.

Oculus 13th, In Cinemas Karen Gillan (Doctor Who’s Amy Pond) stars in this horror from the producers of ‘Paranormal Activity’ and is based on a short film by writer and director Mike Flanagan. A woman tries to prove her brother innocent of murder by showing that the crime was committed by a supernatural entity. The fact that it also features ‘Battlestar Galactica’ s Katee Sackhoff only increases the geek quotient.

3 Days to Kill 20th, In Cinemas A dying CIA agent, trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter, is offered an experimental drug that could save his life in return for one last job. An unlikely premise made even more unlikely by casting Kevin Costner as the action hero. When I tell you that director McG is best known for the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ films you probably know what to expect.

Oh and you might well remember him playing guitar and co-writing just about everything for his previous band, a little-known popular northern beat combo called The Smiths.

Mr Tumble Mr Tumble (aka Justin Fletcher) celebrated a decade of his CBeebies show ‘Something Special’ last year. Always the biggest festival moment for the youngsters, Mr Tumble will no doubt again draw the largest Main Stage crowd of the weekend. Amazing pop fact – Justin’s father wrote big hits for Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, Frankie Valli and the Bay City Rollers amongst others! 16

barlife Fizzy, over-processed, sugary lager – you’ve had your time. Call yourself beer? Ha! What we want is a truly honed, flavourful and unique drinking experience, so this month we’ve sorted the wheat from the hops to bring you somewhere you can enjoy some real drink. The specialist beer and ale industry is bursting at the seams, giving us - the lucky consumers, a new lease of life, choice, and taste experiences. Callum Partis: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk

Hare & Hounds 75 London Road, 01273 681163 A modern splash of industrial chrome meets weathered oak as you step into this recently beefed up and stripped down long-standing Brighton institution, dressing it in a brighter, fresher light. The H&H is host to a very large space, perfect for groups, with an excellent garden. Unfiltered from-brewery-to-pint-glass Meantime is on show here, and is a right treat. hareandhoundsbrighton.com

North Laine Pub & Brewery 27 Gloucester Place, 01273 683666 Proud of the distance (or lack of it) from their own meticulously crafted ales to your lips, you couldn’t get more local beer if you brewed it in your shed. A large selection of finely tuned, micro-brewed-real ales should tick all the boxes for your thirsty palate. The ability to split your pint into three is a winner. drinkinbrighton.co.uk

The Cow 95-97 Dyke Road, 01273 772370 Here you will find a plethora of craft beer at your fingertips, sourced from all over the globe. Draft craft is a selling point here with taps including Brooklyn, Anchor Steam and Brewdog. Catering for the Seven Dials crowd, prices are representative. One of my favourite all timers is the Aussie bred Little Creatures, a must try - perfect summer fodder. thecowbrighton.co.uk 28

livemusic Hopefully you’ve recovered from The Great Escape by now, because June isn’t letting up on the gig front. If the duopoly of noise rock deities Swans and Melt-Banana playing on the same night wasn’t enough (which to see!?), Concorde is also seeing sets from rap icons Public Enemy and experimental queen tUnEyArDs, as well as a set by soul diva Avery Sunshine at The Old Market. Another busy month then! Andrew Kilpatrick: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

The Magic Band Sun 1st, The Haunt Led by John “Drumbo” French, old drummer for the psychedelic-, blues rock pioneer/ Frank Zappa’s worst best mate, Captain Beefheart. Following the death of the Captain in 2010, The Magic Band have continued to spread his music, playing sets made up primarily of old material and instrumental renditions of his later, more complex work, with this Haunt gig promising two full sets. thehauntbrighton.co.uk

Swans Mon 2nd, Concorde 2 Noise rock legends Swans are over from New York City for their first UK dates this year. Fuzzing up in venues since 1982, Swans recently released their thirteenth album, the doubledisc ‘To Be Kind’, to critical fervour. Lauded as one of the most essential experimental rock groups to have ever exist, missing this chance to see them in relatively intimate surrounds would be inexcusable! concorde2.co.uk

Melt-Banana Mon 2nd, Green Door Store Hailing from Japan, this noise rock duo have battered ear drums since the early nineties, touring extensively throughout the world and releasing ten albums in the process. With music relying as much on technical virtuosity as it does blunt, punk-like kinetics and rawness, Melt-Banana are a hugely invigorating live act. Expect chaotic sounds, shouted female vocals and more emotion than a rom-com weepy. thegreendoorstore.co.uk 32

Mon 2nd, Prince Albert This truly legendary punk band have been around for over 35 years, with this gig being only their third in Brighton over all that time. Fuzzy guitars, garage punk sound, and Talking Heads-like vocals; the group have produced tons of material covering various genres and styles, and have played with the likes of NYCers Ramones and Suicide in the past. Punk legends indeed. facebook: theprincealbert

Angel Olsen Wed 4th, The Old Market Olsen mixes lo-fi indie sounds with flourishes of folk and country, creating suffocating music that is as glazedeyed and melancholic as it is abrasive and sharp. Like if Lorde was a more stereotypical teenager. With a sound born straight from dingy basements of New York, Angel Olsen has become an unsurprisingly popular live act able to bring her heart-felt swoonings to stage. theoldmarket.com

Neil Zaza & Morglbl Wed 4th, Komedia Fulfilling your monthly quota of prog rock virtuosity and esotericism, melodic and technically ferocious guitarist Neil Zaza joins trio Morglbl, featuring equally talented bassist Ivan Roughy and guitarist Christophe Godin, for some Primus via Steve Vai, unhinged mayhem. Mixing jazz and touches of metal into progressive rock, the foursome create expertly performed, awe-inspiring, and hugely complex pieces that manage to appear improvised. komedia.co.uk

Youthblood Thurs 19th, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Local trio Youthblood are hitting up the city with their unique mixture of shoegazing sobriety, dream pop plush and psychedelic meanderings in a packed five-act gig. Featuring support from female-led dream pop Holy Milk, garage punksters The Eskimo Chain, garage psychedelicers Strange-Cases and DJ set from Munki, and all for four pounds. For that price you don’t even need to like ‘em. drinkinbrighton.co.uk

summerfestivals The festival season isn’t only about music. Whilst Glastonbury is on everyone’s lips, there is also many quality literature, food and arts festivals happening in ol’ Britain. With the fantastic Edinburgh Art and the Port Eliot Literature festivals happening over the next few months, those who aren’t ‘down’ with the sitting in a field covered in filth and sweat game still have plenty to look forward to this summer! Andrew Kilpatrick: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Field Day Sat 7th & Sun 8th, Victoria Park Headlined this year by dance indies Metronomy and Alt-Rockers Pixies, Field Day is continuing its yearly climb as an essential festival. Also on the line-up this year are twinkly pop/rock band Future Islands, rapper Danny Brown, club dub king SBTRKT, sludge and garage rockers Drenge, electronic pop newcomer Mickey Lightfoot and neo-psychedelics from The Horrors, to name but a few. fielddayfestivals.com

clublife It’s festival season again but don’t despair if you couldn’t afford it or missed the stampede for tickets as here in Brighton we have more than enough to keep you entertained and you get to sleep in your own bed (or someone else’s) at the end of the night. As usual there’s a variety of musical styles and exciting nights on offer this month so what are you waiting for? DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

Dixon Sat 7th, Digital Dixon might have been a footballer, long distance runner or a high jumper, but luckily for house heads worldwide, dodgy knees and disillusionment towards solitary training methods meant he ended becoming one of the leading lights in Berlin clubland just as it grew beyond its techno heritage. One of the few Berliners to actually be from the city, he made his name on DJing alone. yourfutureisdigital.com

High Pressure Nights Featuring Richard Norris Fri 13th, Green Door Store High Pressure Nights have been delivering their unique brand of tunes that span acid house to indie for a while but finally get a regular slot. To celebrate Richard Norris, the mastermind behind Beyond The Wizards Sleeve and Time And Space Machine takes to the decks for a set that is sure to throw up a few surprises. ttasm.com

Toucan Play Weds 18th, Green Door Store Bringing the 1970s’ New York party scene to present day Brighton, they’re going to take you back to what started as one of the most exciting dance movements in history. Paying homage to the early fusions of funk, soul, afrobeat and Latin influences that came together at the fingertips of New York’s finest spinners to make what was to become disco music. thegreendoorstore.co.uk 40
