ourcity

ourcity We are halfway through a three-year programme to strengthen the Brighton & Hove promenade around the West Pier. This is part of the long-term work needed to maintain the arches supporting the seafront roads and pavements above. Our engineers do regular inspections, assessments and maintenance work - but the majority of the Victorian structures are over 120 years old and require major renovation. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George

Promenade Arches Revamp Over many years the promenade arches had been deteriorating, allowing rain to leak into spaces below, and large sections need replacing. Unfortunately previous council administrations didn’t put aside money to do major works, and the backlog has been mounting. However we’ve been investing significant sums in rebuilding sections of these arches to ensure that they’re stable and safe for years to come. This is essential to keeping the seafront A259 road open and able to carry significant weight of traffic that it currently does. But as well as being part of the transport infrastructure, many of the arches host commercial premises for businesses that are a key part of our seafront. We are currently completing the restoration of 26 fishermen’s arches on the seafront. The historic works have strengthened the promenade but will also have created ten brand new business units which will be available once completed. Also included in the development are new public toilets, which are always 4

welcome on our often busy beach. There’s a lot of work still to do, and funding to find in order to keep our seafront active and operational. So we are currently developing an investment strategy to set out how we will source the funding needed to make up for years of underinvestment in this major city asset. It’s a challenging but absolutely crucial project that we’ve undertaken to keep our seafront open for business for years to come.

futureevents

futureevents It’s official! Winter’s nearly over, and while it might have been one of the wettest, stormiest ones in recent history, the Future section is here to help you gaze far into the future toward pale sandy beaches, hot sunshine, coconuts and steel drums. Actually, that’s a lie, but we are peering ahead to spring and all the deliciously warming goodies there are to do about town come in the next months. Plum Woodard: future@whatsonguide.co.uk

Takeover Brighton Fri 28th – Sun 30th March, Various Venues Brighton’s finest LGBT venues will unite for a huge new weekend festival aimed at students. Goldfrapp Sat 29th March, Dome Concert Hall The delicious electro duo come to Brighton in early spring touring their intimate 2013 record ‘Tales of Us’. By its very supernature (sorry, couldn’t resist), the record isn’t as strident as its predecessors, but dives head first (sorry again) back into the bucolic vibe of 2008’s Seventh Tree. Which, frankly, was beautiful. Expect to leave with a sense of the arcane invincible. brightondome.org

Warrior Run Sun 30th March, South Downs This is an up-to-18k cross country obstacle event at the foot of the South Downs. With over 30 obstacles per 6k lap, enjoy crawling through nets, climbing walls, smashing through swamps, throwing yourself over dirt mounds, hauling logs and tyres, making your way through webs and tunnels and splashing through the ditches and streams that make up the course. Take the challenge. Be a warrior. warrior-run.co.uk 6

They’re not being shown at every cinema but look hard enough and this month you will discover ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ (14th) and ‘The Godfather Part 2’ (21st) with loads more classics to follow throughout the year. Jadoo: Kings Of Curry 17th, On DVD This is a British-made comedy set in Leicester, and tells the story of two brothers, Raja and Jagi. Both are wonderful chefs who fall out so catastrophically that they rip the family recipe book in half: one brother gets the starters and the other gets the main courses. They set up rival restaurants, on opposite sides of the road; one cooking starters, the other main courses and refusing to talk to each other. Raja’s daughter Shalini attempts to get them talking again by asking them to work together to cook her perfect Indian wedding banquet. Writer and director Amit Gupta has crafted an immensely enjoyable tale that has plenty of heart without being overly sentimental. The

16

what’sonfeb14

story stems from his years living above the family restaurant in Leicester’s Little India and, as such, feels totally authentic. Even though some of the cast are mainly known for their TV roles they perform admirably especially ‘Sleepy Hollow’s Tom Mison and ‘The Darjeeling Limited’s’ Amara Karan. However it is Harish Patel as Raja who steals the show with a brilliantly comic performance that is both believable and loveable. ‘Jadoo: Kings of Curry’ deserves its place in the rich legacy of independent British comedies but don’t see it on an empty stomach as the remarkable looking food that is presented will have you salivating throughout.

7th, In Cinemas Based on the novel by Joyce Maynard, this romantic drama stars Kate Winslet as a depressed single mum who finds a wounded escaped convict in the form of Josh Brolin and gives him a lift. As the police search the town for him, the mother and son gradually learn his true story and their options become increasingly limited. Four times Oscar nominated Jason Reitman directs.

Robocop 7th, In Cinemas Paul Verhoeven’s ultra violent 1987 satire on society is one of my favourite films ever so when this watered down reboot was announced I was filled with dread. On watching the high octane trailer my fears dissipated as a cast featuring Gary Oldman, Samuel L Jackson and Michael Keaton could be just what the franchise needs to re energise it for a twenty first century audience.

The Lego Movie 14th, In Cinemas For all the internet excitement about Zack Snyder’s Batman/Superman team up it seems that we wont have to wait to see this pairing after all as here they join a cast of characters that includes Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Abraham Lincoln. All presented in glorious virtual plastic blocks and voiced by Channing Tatum, Morgan Freeman and Liam Neeson.

Cuban Fury 14th, In Cinemas Nick Frost stars in this comedy about a former salsa prodigy who attempts a comeback years after his career is ruined. Ian McShane, Kevin Eldon and Chris O’Dowd join a host of familiar funny faces and the script is by ‘Fresh Meat’ and ‘Misfits’ writer Jon Brown. Could this be the film that deposes Richard Curtis as the long reigning king of British film comedy?

That means a lot of hours to fill before and after. Hence I’ve been out and about and online searching for events to motivate our ‘little darlings’ and, at same time, cheer us all up. Oh and promise no arguments when choosing! Justin Williams: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Whether you’re seeking a cosy romantic hide-away, some fine dining for two, or you just want to seek some solace from those Valentines blues, you can be assured that there’s somewhere for everyone to settle down, eat up and get the drinks in. Callum Partis: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk

Basketmakers Arms 12 Gloucester Road, 01273 689006 One for the real ale aficionados, personalised cut crystal pint glasses line the bar in this sheltered, historical oaken cave - one of the first in Brighton. The walls are adorned in countless metal boxes. Fondling through the contents left behind from patrons passed is good for a laugh, or maybe you could write a little love note of your own? thebasketmakersarms.co.uk

Jolly Poacher 100 Ditchling Road, 01273 683967 Gastronomy dominates here, at a relatively new establishment. Classical French with a British fusion, the menu prides itself on the use of local, seasonal and fresh produce. A warm, homely atmosphere greets you and is certainly romantic; with an open fire and wooden beams. A genuine culinary treat, uncluttered and well presented, you may have to have stay for a nightcap. thejollypoacher.com

Sip your chosen beverages whilst being bathed in the most flattering light imaginable. twitter: SettingSun_Pub

Bohemia 45-55 Meeting House Lane, 01273 777770 A bit of a mixed bag, the women in my life recommend this one. Dimly lit, grand and theatrical, this hybrid jazz-cafe, restaurant, bar, and nightclub offers service with style, plus afternoon tea! Discreet booths are available to nestle into for a quieter drink; whilst as the night draws on, the pace steps up, accommodating Live Djs and a decent sized dance floor. bohemiabrighton.co.uk

Lion & Lobster 24 Sillwood Street, 01273 327299 Musky tones of aged leather and wood fill the air (as well as a bit of whisky), when you twist and turn though this cosy, warm grotto. Again, booths are a snug option if you’re with a special someone, but be sure to check out the double-storey heated terrace, where you can get some fresh air and enjoy your drink alfresco. thelionandlobster.co.uk

Preston Park Tavern 88 Havelock Road, 01273 542271 What better way to spend a crisp February evening than to take a relaxed amble around the park, and retire to a warm atmosphere, wide selection of ales, wines and hearty grub. A very consistent and ever evolving favourite for many years, you will find deliciously unfussy, contemporary British pub dining with a focus on seasonal ingredients and environmental sustainability. prestonparktavern.co.uk

food It’s the month of ‘lurv’. Dust off those Barry White albums – works for girls or boys I’m told. Not for me though. It is Nick Cave’s ‘Into My Arms’, John Martyn’s ‘Send Me One Line’ or Frank Sinatra’s version of ‘Someone To Watch Over Me’ that melts my heart. Add to that dinner, preferably candlelit, at Terre A Terre, Gars or any number of wonderful Brighton eateries and I’m yours! Kairen Kemp: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Menus at the Brunswick change daily not only to reflect seasonal trends but to also offer the very best produce available that day as chef searches

small independent producers, farmers and fishermen early each day. “I believe in making good food available to everyone, that’s why we have main meals available for less than £10, and why over 95% of the menu is for less than £15. We also offer 2 courses for £13.95 on a Monday night.

The Brunswick pub in Hove celebrates the arrival of new head chef Edward, aka @ThatChefBloke. Ed’s culinary and farming background combine to deliver an inspired field to fork menu such as his signature surf and turf; cider poached then slow roasted pork belly, hand dived scallops on apple velouté and crushed minted peas, served with dauphinoise potatoes and cider reduction. All meat is sourced locally and the leaves couldn’t be fresher with the kitchen team running their very own roof top micro farm at the Brunswick for salads, herbs and chilies and vegetables.

Mon-Sun 12 Noon-9pm TheBrunswickPub

Heading up the kitchen is an exciting challenge and my whole team are looking forward to delivering the new menu, to a range and standard never seen at the Brunswick before. Most of all we’re excited to be developing private dining in the 3 function rooms the venue has available for hire ... In just a few weeks we’ll be catering for 130 wedding guests and the team can’t wait”.

livemusic When did the live scene in Brighton get so good? I swear only a few years ago unless you wanted to see Bloc Party or [insert any winner of any musical talent show] you’d be out of luck. The acts in Brighton this month are so good I’m worried looking at the names too long will reveal as a mirage … From punk-thrash to Italian prog-rock, this month has it all! Andrew Kilpatrick:: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

Gama Bomb Sun 2nd, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Ireland’s top punky thrashers are destroying Brighton at some point this month. Backed by Glaswegian punkthrash titans SSS, those into a bit of neck-snapping whiplash causing riffage should buy tickets, get boozed, book a neck massage for the day after and get ready to stomp around Sticky Mike’s like moshing is going out of fashion. Bring bandages, rubbing alcohol and splints. drinkinbrighton.co.uk

Tera Melos Sun 9th, Green Door Store Californian trio Tera Melos preach the words of indie, punk, jazz, progressive, experimental … a bit of everything. Sounding like a more melodic offshoot of fellow countrymen Battles, Tera Melos are gracing Brighton with their brand of weird, quirky, mathematical and downright catchy proggy indie pop ingenuity. Those who enjoy esotericism would be foolish to miss this. thegreendoorstore.co.uk

Van Morrison Mon 17th & Tue18th , Brighton Dome How to sum up an artist this prolific in fifty words? Highlight that he’s been active for fifty-five years? Talk about the countless Grammies and Brits he’s won? Try and summarise his 34 album releases? That’s a lot to cover, so I should just say this: it’s Van Morrison, he’s still as outstanding as he’s always been, go see him! brightondome.org 30

Mon 17th, The Haunt America’s answer to Jamie T are coming to Brighton following a successful appearance at Reading festival. Sounding suspiciously like Eminem, a well-read one anyway, through the rapped verses before falling into crooning harmonic poetry during the choruses, ‘Vessel’ has earned them a formidable reputation in both the indie and underground rap scenes. thehauntbrighton.co.uk

Toy Tue 18th, The Old Market Brighton’s psychedelic shoegazers are hitting us with their trademark blend of 60s’ revival via 80s’ post-punk in support of their recent sophomore album, ‘Join The Dots’, being released. Think The Cure covering mid-60s’ Beatles with a dash of Hendrix and early Pulp. Driving beats, lucid tones and spaced vocals, if this doesn’t get the nostalgia pumping then nothing will. theoldmarket.com

Goblin Mon 24th, Concorde 2 Italian progressive rock deities Goblin are coming to Brighton for the first time ever this month in what could be a once in a lifetime performance. Worldfamous for their soundtrack work on horror films as iconographic as Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Profondo Rosso, Goblin have enjoyed a huge fan-base following due to their distinctive, electronically tinged and highly tense prog rock meanderings. concorde2.co.uk

clublife

clublife This time of year is usually quiet due to the number of party people who are still in hibernation but, judging by the glut of quality club nights to be had this month, Brighton is preparing to see in the year in style. So get your dancing shoes on and check out the wide range of varied and exciting nights that our fair city seems to do so very well. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

Congo Natty Sat 1st, Concorde 2 Jungle Pioneer Congo Natty is probably better known under his Rebel MC moniker with which he scored a massive hit with Double Trouble, ‘Street Tuff’, in 1989. His latest album ‘Jungle Revolution’ was released last year on Big Dada records and showed that Jungle is a re-boot of roots reggae for a new century. Expect a celebration of all things red, gold and green. concorde2.co.uk

Green Door Reggae Sessions Thurs 6th, Green Door Store One of the most popular genres in Brighton has to be reggae so I’m constantly surprised that there aren’t more club nights devoted to it. This new night will be running bi-monthly and promises a night of Rootical Skanking tunes and just happens to be Bob Marley’s birthday. DJs include John the Baptist, Junior Baptist, Miss Polly and Ronnie Biggs. greendoorstore.co.uk

Sub Focus Sat 8th, Concorde 2 Nick Douwma has been releasing records as Sub Focus since 2003 and has gone on to become a highly successful and respected producer and DJ. With many chart hits under his belt, including Example’s hit ‘Kickstarts’, he has also remixed the likes of Deadmau5 and Dizzee Rascal. He is currently signed to Andy C’s Ram Records and has recently released his second album. subfocus.com 36

Sat 8th, Digital Todd Edwards musical career began in 1992 and he has gone on to remix hundreds of acts including St Germain, Justice and Klaxons as well as providing vocals on ‘Face To Face’ for Daft Punk’s ‘Discovery’ album. Teaming up with him tonight is Jackmaster, who constantly surprises the crowd with his eclectic sets which range from hip hop to house and techno. facebook: toddedwardsmusic

Beta Hector Sat 8th, Fortune of War An often overlooked venue when it comes to top notch DJs, the Fortune of War have been regularly serving up great names for quite a while. Tonight Tru Thoughts recording artist Beta Hector or Simon Hill to his mates plays a hometown gig where he will be spinning a selection of his recent vinyl purchases alongside vintage 45s and hip hop 12”s. betahector.com

Metalheadz with Goldie Sat 22nd, Concorde 2 Clifford Price has been a leading force in drum and bass for over twenty years. Since then he has gone on to be a regular face on mainstream TV, appeared in films and exhibited his art around the world. He set up the Metalheadz record label in 1994 with legendary DJs Kemistry & Storm. Tonight he’s joined by Calyx, Teebee and more. goldie.co.uk

Claude Von Stroke Weds 26th, Audio Claude’s real name is Barclay Crenshaw and he was raised in the suburbs of Detroit. He wanted to be a film maker but always had a knack for music. After having various successes with several different film careers he started the Dirtybird label at the late age of 32. Look forward to an extremely fun night that will have you dancing all night long. audiobrighton.com
