aprilfocus It’s a little early to claim you’ve seen the gig of the year yet but April could have a contender or two. The proof’s in the pudding, as they say, so if you’re not there you’ll never know. Talking of astonishing performances, it’s not everyday you’re invited to a séance. No promises, but you could witness a communication from the ‘other side’ … now that really would make my year. Greg Furlong: focus@whatsonguide.co.uk
Hot-Tip Hi-Fi Fri 6th, The Black Dove Hot-Tip Hi-Fi put on events all over Brighton, tailoring their sets to each specific venue but always top quality vintage Reggae, Rocksteady and Ska classics that promise to keep your ears interested and your feet moving. Pair that with some of the nicest bar staff in town mixing delicious cocktails to order and you know this party is going to be jumping. hthf.mono.net
Dirty Dancing Night Sat 7th, Terraces Bar & Grill Overlooking Madeira Drive with panoramic views across the beach to Brighton Pier, Terraces is a fantastic dining spot. Their themed dinner dances are popular but this one should be a huge hit, capturing the Kellerman’s spirit with all the favourites like Hungry Eyes and You’ve Had the Time of Your Life … so long as nobody puts baby in the corner! the-terraces.co.uk
The Victorian Séance Fri 13th, Preston Manor On 11 November 1896 the Stanford family held a séance at Preston Manor. They became the ultimate fashionable Victorian after-dinner entertainment, but what were they exactly? This theatrical evening event looks at what séances were and why they thrilled their audiences so much. You’ll get a complimentary glass of sherry on arrival and who knows what other surprises as the evening unfolds. brighton-hove-rpml.org.uk 6

Brighton Bike Fest,

Mon 16th – Sun 22nd, Brighton Bike Fest brings together various Brighton cycle groups in a celebration of the ideal urban transportation. The week long festival will include workshops, talks, movies, tournaments and music celebrating and promoting cycling as a safe, clean, healthy and cheap alternative to the car. So be warned, driving to this event may not be your wisest choice and don’t just mean environmentally. brightonbikefest.org
Mad Dog Mcrea Wed 18th, The Prince Albert Mad Dog Mcrea blend folk rock, pop, gypsy jazz, bluegrass and ‘shake your ass’ music (apparently!). That’s a lot of bases covered but every one’s a winner from self-penned songs of adventure, drinking, love and life to traditional tales of gypsies, fairies and legless pirates. If everyone’s not dancing like a ‘loon’ by the end of the gig I’ll be amazed. maddogmcrea.co.uk
The Legendary Shack Shakers Tue 24th, The Haunt Nashville foursome The Legendary Shack Shakers have been described as “The maddest, baddest, most outrageous band in America ... a rockabilly version of the Sex Pistols.” Their live shows are wild, with front man Colonel J.D. Wilkes coming across like the bastard child of Iggy Pop and a Southern Baptist preacher. Don’t miss this swamp-thumping country, rock & roll, blues and rockabilly thehauntbrighton.co.uk
Young Artists’ Day Saturday 28th, Brighton Museum To celebrate the city-wide Youth Arts Festival, local young artists will be leading a series of short drop-in workshops in an art form of their choice. They’re open to anyone 14-24 years old. So whether you’re a budding Picasso, Warhol or Emin you’ll pick up all manner of useful advice, both artistic and practical, and you don’t have to pay a penny. brighton-hove-rpml.org.uk

eatingout
eatingout We’ve had shops and galleries now let me introduce you to the world of The Pop Up Kitchen! There isn’t a better reason to celebrate everything that makes this country great ... independence, motivation, style, good taste and great ideas. Popping up at least twice a month around the city at various pubs, cafes and functions, you won’t want to miss out! I went to see what was on offer at The London Unity. Stephanie Young: eat@whatsonguide.co.uk
The Pop Up Kitchen Facebook: The-Pop-Up-Kitchen, Twitter: thepopupkitchen For my Pop Up experience I ventured to The London Unity for a one-off Thursday evening. Upon entering I found myself engulfed in a vibrant, welcoming, yet cosy bar with chatter filling the air accompanied by mellow tunes and candle light. Shown to our table the first thing on the menu was some free crusty bread with large slices of real butter - a rarity these days! The starter was a French onion soup. Well presented it arrived with a big chunk of toasted french bread extruding from the bowl. Packed full of sweet onions and scattered with sharp cheddar cheese the flavour combinations married well. Now over to the main - yum yum! I have always been a bit wary of belly of pork, but no longer. It was very meaty and tender, not fatty at all. To describe the crackling I have one word – CRUNCH. The home made apple sauce, crunchy cabbage with a hint of nutmeg and creamy dauphinoise potatoes all sat in a delicious as jus. 8

Finding just enough room for the panatone and apple dessert served with Amaretto sauce, not being a real pudding person, before I knew it my plate was empty and my taste buds over joyed. 10/10! With 80% of ingredients sourced within 15 miles of Brighton the only improvement I would suggest is to extend the menu. However I was told it’s limited to ensure quality food at a set price. 2 courses: £10 Dessert: £3.50. By the end of the evening I wasn’t the only one fully satisfied. The landlord has now offered a residency every Sunday for roasts - booking advisable! The London Unity 01273 609364. For other venues throughout the month get online and feast.

health&lifestyle Spring is now well and truly underway. Hurrah! Flowers are blooming, trees are pink with blossom, and the smell of freshly cut grass lingers in the air. Isn’t it wonderful? Well… not for everyone. For hayfever sufferers this time of year can be quite miserable. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be this way – there are natural drug-free ways to heal your body from hayfever and other allergies. Suzie Brown: Waters:health@whatsonguide.co.uk eat@whatsonguide.co.uk Leisa
Hay Fever Most people think that the cause of their hayfever is the allergen itself – grass, pollen, etc. In fact, hayfever is merely a symptom of an underlying imbalance, usually within the immune system but originating from a weakened gut. When you correct these imbalances, your body will become strong enough to cope with the natural substances that float around during summer and you will no longer suffer the misery of those uncomfortable allergy symptoms. Kinesiology is a very effective way to help your body heal from allergies. A good Kinesiologist will look at all aspects of your health, including nutrition, emotional stress and energy systems (acupuncture meridians, chakras, etc) and will then use
powerful techniques to restore balance. Herbs, nutrition and flower essences will be used when relevant, to enhance the healing process, and you may be taught some techniques that you can use yourself at home to help your body to stay healthy. Because Kinesiology is so holistic and thorough, it is quite common for people to notice a reduction in their symptoms even after their first session. For a free information booklet about allergies and hayfever, including natural methods to try yourself, please email Leisa info@leisabrown.co.uk

The Brighton Spring Harvest Food Festival is coming to town, and as if that wasn’t enough excitement this month, there are also all kinds of non-edible treats in the shape of a murder mystery train adventure, the Brighton Marathon, cabaret all the way from Brooklyn, Sunday Morning jazz, musical drama at the New Venture, and Alan Bennett at the Theatre Royal. Sarah Herbert: culture@whatsonguide.co.uk
Food & Drink Spring Harvest Until Mon 9th, Brighton & Hove Secret super clubs, the infamous chilli challenge, a festival of cakey-bakey treats, a gourmet bus tour, live food kitchens, a celebration of wine at the very swanky Hotel du Vin, the Big Sussex Market, and a celebration of fishy treats, it’s all going on during the Brighton and Hove Spring Harvest. brightonfoodfestival.com
The Rise & Fall of Little Voice Until Sun 7th, New Venture Theatre Lions and tigers and bears! Winner of the Evening Standard and Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Comedy, Jim Cartwright’s most famous play tells the story of Little Voice, whose secluded existence is threatened when her mother’s new squeeze discovers she can perfectly impersonate famous female vocalists and sees a quick buck in it. newventure.org

The Lady In the Van
Coney Island Cabaret Fri 13th, Komedia Four years ago, when easy credit was all the rage, I paid a visit to Coney Island. If this is anything like the experience I had between Nathan’s hotdog stall and the wooden roller coaster, then, oh the things that you will see! Try your luck on the stalls, get your fortune told and a fake tattoo done, and marvel at curiosities galore. komedia.brighton.com
Brighton Marathon Sun 15th, Madeira Drive I love love love to watch a marathon! On the side-lines, the tune from Chariots of Fire pounding in my head, cheering people on, trying to guess who will make it past the finishing line without getting cramp, and as a general principle, becoming overemotional and vowing to train for and entry a similar event myself the following year. It will never happen. brightonmarathon.co.uk

filmclub The 3D juggernaut rolls on and never fails to elicit heated debate amongst film fans. No one can deny that it has rejuvenated a flagging industry and got people flocking back to the cinema but, personally, I have not seen anything since ‘Avatar’ that’s worth shelling out the extra money (‘Captain America’ I’m looking at you). Let’s hope 2012’s filmmakers will actually realise what an engrossing medium it can be. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk
Kill Keith Out Now on DVD Danny (Marc Pickering) is a twenty five year old tea boy working on a breakfast TV show which features every octogenarian’s favourite cheeky chappie, Keith Chegwin. When the co-host Cliff (David Easter) announces he is leaving the show, his rumoured replacements start dying one by one by the hand of the mysterious Breakfast Cereal Killer. Who is the killer and how long before they reach the obvious choice for the job – Cheggars. This horror comedy has a very promising concept (Saw meets Richard & Judy) and should be great fun but never quite gets there. It’s not gory or scary enough to be a good horror film and definitely not funny enough to become a classic. You know you’re in trouble when the funniest thing during the ninety minutes is a brief cameo from Joe Pasquali in a monkey suit. A confusing gag concerning Tony Blackburn’s true identity and an extremely implausible love story between Danny and 20

Susannah Fielding’s female anchor leaves the director, Dominic Burns, facing a floundering script that is not half as clever as it thinks it is. If you want a really well thought out and funny critique on the state of television check out Charlie Brooker’s superb Big Brother/Zombie mash up TV series ‘Dead Set’ and leave ‘Kill Keith’ on the shelf as the fairly amusing idea for a film poster that it obviously was.

In Cinemas, 3rd In 1997 James Cameron’s romantic historical blockbuster was the most expensive film ever made, costing 200 million dollars, but went on to smash box office records and scoop eleven of the fourteen Academy Awards it was nominated for. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett still star and the boat still sinks but now in three dimensions. As if they really need to make more money.
Battleship In Cinemas, 11th On paper this looks like the money men in Hollywood have gone stark raving mad. A film based a game? What’s next, Draughts the Movie? Luckily, the reality looks a different story as the US Navy is pitted against aliens on the high seas. An intriguing cast including Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard and Rhianna coupled with lots of action will guarantee an audience for this one.
The Cabin In The Woods In Cinemas, 13th This horror film has been shrouded in secrecy for a while now but what we do know is that it’s produced and co-written by Joss Whedon, stars Chris (Thor) Hemsworth and is delivered in 3D. The tag line, “if you think you know this story think again” is intriguing and the trailer looks like a new take on some well worn clichés.
Avengers Assemble In Cinemas, 27th Renamed for us Brits, just in case you were expecting Steed and Mrs Peel, this latest entry in the Marvel Comics franchise sees the long awaited team up of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Hulk under the guidance of Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury. This looks like the movie event of the year and I am so excited that I can barely type.

At the Exhibition, you can find out much more about all those organisations and the work they do, learn more about how you can get involved, or maybe even sign up to run the Brighton Marathon for your favourite charity in 2013!
The Weekend
As the big day approaches, overnight on Saturday 14 April, we get down to some serious work. To make the course clear to runner and spectator alike, 5000 barriers are erected with six miles of branding, five miles of tape and 12,000 cones. During the race 160,000 bottles
of water will be downed as well as 50,000 bottles of Powerade and 16,000 shot bloks/gels as well as 12,000 Clif bars to keep energy levels high. For the charity village, 3000sq/m of

marquee has been erected and to make sure it all goes smoothly 2000 volunteers are dotted around the course. More than 40 doctors and consultants, 12 physiotherapists and over 300 St John Ambulance first aiders are on hand with copious amounts of Vaseline and TLC for the foot weary. It takes ÂŁ1m to stage the Brighton Marathon, but as a bonus the race makes ÂŁ5m for charity and the same amount is spent in the city over the weekend. It is an event for the City to be proud of.

So let me give you a couple of suggestions of venues to tempt you out to join me. There’s the established option – the lovely Kobar and the new sophisticated kid on the block Bohemia. So come on and mine’s a Mojito … Kairen Kemp: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk
Bohemia Grand Café & Late lounge 54-55 Meeting House Lane, 01273 777770 Beautifully arranged over three floors, Bohemia delivers a full breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea menu in the Grand Café, and the Late Lounge offers a night out never before seen in the city. Set in the historic Lanes, the venue has undergone a complete refurbishment taking much of the building back to its former beauty, and
restoring many of its original features, from windows to brickwork. Aimed firmly at the discerning 25+ set, Bohemia is the latest venture of the entrepreneurial husband and wife team, Paul and Verity Craig. They’ve created quite a stir. livemusic
livemusic After a March of melodic mayhem, you may just decide you want to usher in a blissful spring with a few folk delights. Alternatively, there’s some thought-out thrash to tickle your toes. Or better yet, a plethora of astute indie from newbies and legends alike. It’s all ready and waiting, so it just depends what sort of April you’re up for; but make sure it’s a loud one, yeah? Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk
The Futureheads
Mon 2nd, Komedia If you’ve ever seen post-punk Sunderland saints The Futureheads before, you’ll know that they’re partial to lovely four-part vocal harmonies to accompany wailing guitars and snappy rhythms. Ditching the traditional instruments, the lads will be experimenting with just exactly what those wonderful Wearside voices can do in support of their new acapella/acoustic album. Get down there to watch them sing it loud and proud. thefutureheads.co.uk
Boy & Bear Thurs 12th, The Hope Hailing from Sydney, this quintet of Australian folk are riding high on the back of homeland success. With five awards including Best Album at the 2011 ARIAs (think BRITs), the band are hungry for success. With great guitar, driving folk rhythms and infectious melodies, there’s no doubting them; check out the stupendous video for ‘Rabbit Song’ and tell me I’m wrong. boyandbear.com
Bombay Bicycle Club Mon 16th, Brighton Centre Not much more can be said about these talented whippersnappers that hasn’t already been heard, but I’ll try anyway. With a maturity that belies their age, Bombay Bicycle Club have enticed fans of all ages with intelligent, danceable, heartfelt indie that speaks to the soul as well as your shoe souls. They are truly fantastic live, so don’t you dare miss out. bombaybicycleclubmusic.com 42

Stick It On is turning a number of its monthly Saturday nights at Sticky Mikes Frog Bar into fundraising events for charities and good causes. Therefore, anyone who wishes to use the night to raise money can contact SIO HQ and apply to use them as a fundraising vehicle for their chosen charity.
