ourcity
ourcity It’s a great honour to have been elected the new Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council in May, and I’m delighted to be able to write about the work the Green administration is doing for our city. That we are already such a popular city, with so many unique strengths, is down to the people: the diverse businesses, third sector groups, public sector workers, campaigners and councillors. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George
Brighton & Hove City Council Jason Kitcat We recently completed a number of big changes to the Old Shoreham Road. They aim to support safer travel for the 5000 young people at the three schools and sixth form nearby, as well as all others travelling on this major west-east route between Hove and Brighton. The most eye-catching addition is the European-inspired segregated cycle lane, which provides safe space for cyclists on this major road, and fills a missing link in the city’s cycle network. Changes have been made for other road users too. Pedestrians will now also find it easier and safer to use the Old Shoreham Road, with new traffic and junction crossings and slower traffic speeds. The new layout had huge support from residents, and has now transformed a road that was unwelcoming and inhospitable to one that can be shared by all. We have our unique challenges here in Brighton & Hove. In this growing and prospering city, it’s all the more important 4
what’sonaug12
to provide efficient, safe and affordable ways of getting around. The Old Shoreham Road changes will no doubt take time to get used to, and we are monitoring the road carefully to see how it works. However more and more residents are already switching to more sustainable and healthier modes of transport, and I look forward to other schemes such as on the Lewes Road and in the North Laine, which will help people do the same across the city.

Jimmy Carr - Gagging Order Sat 26th Jan, Brighton Dome Jimmy Carr’s one-liners have earned him a reputation; his pay-offs can be morally questionable. Rapidly becoming the toast of the nation, he earns his bread poking fun at those less fortunate; you might expect him to sprinkle the crumbs more liberally. eatingout After a couple hours of tennis my friend Neil and I decided we need to get some good food and hang out together. Neil suggested AumThong Thai restaurant in Hove which has been in the city for maybe 20 years so one of the original Thai establishments with the same owners running it to this day. Off we went in hot pursuit of what I call “comfort Thai food” Justin Williams: eat@whatsonguide.co.uk
Aumthong Thai
60 Western Road Hove, 01273 773922 On entering the restaurant we were welcomed like old friends but I think that is the beauty of Thai people they have a certain way about them that makes you feel welcomed, they always have a great smile. So in no time at all our waiter appeared offering us drinks, I went for a straight forward Chang Thai beer but Neil in true Neil style has to have a pint of ice plus a glass of water, does not matter where we go that’s what he wants or milk or orange juice plus always the pint of ice. We were quick to order and the food arrived in no time at all. Neil went for Tom Kha soup (coconut with fresh mushrooms, galangal, lemongrass and lime) a regular for him. I went for the traditional Thai fish cakes with spicy sweet & sour sauce and ground peanuts - hits the spot. After a 10 minute rest we were asked if we were ready for the next course, then they appeared. Neil’s - Chicken Wings stuffed with lightly spiced minced chicken and then deep

fried until crispy served with sweet and sour. Neil offered me one and I must say very tasty; will add this next time to my order. I went for the Masssaman curry with prawns which is a normal order for me but this time I noticed the flavours were much more defined. I also ordered a side of Pad Thai with chicken which we shared. Full and comforted, and ready to continue our journey on, Neil was going home and I was off to the Volks to see Freq Nasty. www.aumthong.com

filmclub Hollywood never lets the fact that a film has been made before stand in its way as this month’s ‘Total Recall’ (29th, In Cinemas) testifies. Colin Farrell steps into Schwarzenegger’s shoes while Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel provide the glamour. Meanwhile ‘The Three Stooges’ (22nd) will probably be met by the sound of thousands of tiny feet rushing to find their grandparents to find out just who these guys are. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk
Goodbye First Love On DVD, 10th Sept In the Paris winter of 1999 Camille (Lola Creton) is fifteen and Sullivan (Sebastian Urzendowsy) is nineteen. Although they love each other passionately, Sullivan wants to go travelling in South America for a year - a plan that fills Camille with despair. At the end of the summer, Sullivan leaves and a few months later he stops writing to her. In the spring, a heartbroken Camille makes a suicide attempt. Four years later she meets a well-known architect who restores her self confidence but Sullivan once more crosses her path. She has never stopped

loving him and her heart is now divided between the two loves of her life. Writer and director Mia Hansen-Love has lovingly crafted a film that captures the heartbreak and hopefulness of young love. While the proceedings move at a snails pace, Creton is a sufficiently engaging lead to keep you interested in her tale. There are some great moments of subtle exposition to convey the passing of time and the storytelling is economical. If subtitled slice of life drama is your thing then you could do worse than to give this a look.

Until Sun 12th, West Pier, Brighton Beach This is a first for Brighton and the UK in terms of a free beach cinema that will offer a grandstand view of the Olympic Games and movies with the atmosphere of a live crowd in a public area that holds up to 3,500 people at any one time. Star Wars, Avatar, Finding Nemo and Titanic will all be screened.
The Dinosaur Project 10th, In Cinemas The found footage genre rolls on with this tale of an expedition into the Congo where a team of explorers stumble upon a colony of dinosaurs. This looks like a cross between Jurassic Park and TV show The River and is aimed at the younger end of the spectrum despite the horror marketing angle. This could well be a fun filled couple of hours.
The Bourne Legacy 13th, In Cinemas Matt Damon may have said goodbye to Jason Bourne but that hasn’t stopped the studio from creating a fourth outing. Jeremy Renner is a new souped up CIA operative, Aaron Cross, who finds that his handlers have turned on him. Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton and Albert Finney all join in the running around. With Bond back later in the year is there any need?
Finnish Film Festival Fri 17th - Weds 29th, Northern Lights Brighton’s only Scandinavian barrestaurant is celebrating Finnish film director Aki Kaurismaki with a retrospective of his films from 1983’s “Crime and punishment” to his latest film from last year “Le Havre”. olympics Once every four years the world’s finest athletes gather in one place to compete in an epic gladiatorial contest. Of course, that’s if you consider handball and beach volleyball gladiatorial. London 2012 sees the return of the Olympics to UK soil after an absence of 64 years, but this time we’re also hosting the Paralympics. The London 2012 Summer Olympic Games will run from July 27th to August 12th. Gareth Becker: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk
Paralympic Games Wed 29th Aug - Sun 9th Sept The Paralympics have grown from a small gathering of British World War II veterans in 1948 to become one of the largest international sport events by the early 21st century. The Paralympic Games include athletes with physical disabilities, run in parallel with the Olympic Games and will be opened by Her MajestyThe Queen in the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday 29th August. London2012.com/paralympics/sports
London Festival The London Festival 2012 is billed as “The biggest festival the UK has ever seen” Let’s hope that doesn’t mean the world’s biggest portaloo field. Running from June 21st to September 9th, The London Festival consists of more than 12,000 events and performances. It climaxes with the Olympic concert in Hyde Park featuring performers from all 4 UK countries including: Duran Duran, The Stereophonics and Snow Patrol.
Olympic Rowing Rowing became a competitive sport after 1829, popularised by the rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge universities. Since 1900 it has featured in every Olympic Games netting Britain 22 gold medals. 2012 rowing events will be held at the world renowned Eton Dorney Rowing Centre in Berkshire. Watch out for Team UK double scull pairs and medal hopefuls Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase, Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins. 24

Olympic Athletics
olympics
The track and field portion of the games contains some of the most iconic events. Sadly in recent years, British athletes have rarely succeeded in being faster, higher or stronger than the competition. In Beijing 2008 Britain brought home a mere 4 medals from athletics events. However, hopes are high for a better 2012 after the team’s second place at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul last March.
Ben Ainslie When a press boat slowed Ben Ainslie down in the 2011 World Championships he reacted speedily; swimming over, boarding the boat and giving them what for. Sadly the Royal Yachting Association did not appreciate his tack and disqualified him. On top of this, a back operation meant a turbulent twelve months for Ben. However the three times Olympic champion remains one of Team UK’s top medal hopes.
Chris Hoy Scotland’s most successful Olympian Chris Hoy became Sir Christopher in 2009. He led the team GB gold medal charge in the 2008 Beijing Olympics; becoming the first British Olympian to win three gold medals is a single Olympic games since 1908. Most recently he won the 2012 World Championship Keirin race in Melbourne, Australia. Team UK will be hoping Sir Chris continues his winning ways in 2012.
Chen Yi Bing There is little doubt that Chinese athletes will be foremost amongst the winners in London 2012. 27 year-old Chen Yi Bing is the Chinese gymnastic team captain and winner of eight world championships and two Olympic golds since 2006. The performance that won him personal gold in the China 2008 Olympics was described as ‘perfect’ and ‘textbook worthy’. Chen is favourite to win gold again this year.

barlife Now to get the chance to see the new look Waterhouse Bar was not to be missed. So off I went after a long day in the office and when I say it was raining (well you know how the summer has been like) I continued on to find the launch in full swing. With a glass of champagne placed in my hand by a welcoming smile. In I went. Justin Williams: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk
Waterhouse Bar The Hilton Metropole, King’s Road, 01273 775432 The first impression that you have when you enter the room is the grandeur and a feeling of quality. Not in a stuffy hotel way but in a stylish well thought through design. The team has spent a lot of time thinking about the look, feel and flow of the room. Just then I saw Brendan (Food & beverage manager) with a strong smile and sense of accomplishment behind it. The room was alive with people and sounds from the DJ playing house just enough that you could hear someone talking to you, the atmosphere was set for a good night. Chefs in their hats whizzed around the room offering many delights. Even the drinks menu has been linked to the city. After a few too many glasses of champagne I asked the bar person

to make me a caipirinha and this they did to perfection. When you go you will see they have given seating a priority plus booths line the room, it lends itself to groups and they inform me that you can reserve these with the following sign displayed “Very Reserved”. As the evening continued I met up with Guy Hilton the General Manager of the Hotel and he seemed very pleased with the delivery of the VIP feel bar which will surely become the City’s destination hang out. For me it was the level of comfort and above all the service with a smile which can be hard to find in this city at times. Did I mention the sea view terrace, oh you’ll have to just go when the sun is out. hilton.com/Brighton

summerfestivals Being probably the most important month of the festival calendar, August contains and predictably high amount of huge festivals and even ‘huger’ line ups, with the gigantic Leeds and Reading festival taking place at the months’ close, along with a host of other great festivals detailed below. So if sports aren’t your thing and you’re sick of the Olympics, do not fret! There is still plenty to do this August! Andrew Kilpatrick: festivals@whatsonguide.co.uk
Bloodstock Open Air Thu 9th – Sun 12th Aug Returning for its eighth year running, Bloodstock is synonymous with the best of European and British metal in one field for four days of absurdly cheap fun. This year has plenty of UK exclusives including Behemoth, with many more iconic acts to boot (including death metal giants Nile and Deicide); this is unmissable if you like music extreme and loud. bloodstock.uk.com
V-Festival Sat 18th – Sun 19th Aug One of the biggest dates in the summer festival calendar, V Festival doses out a predictably huge line up, with The Stone Roses and The Killers headlining over megastars such as Snow Patrol and Tom Jones. Almost reading like a who’s who of artists that were most relevant or talked about this year, V does its heritage proud with another gargantuan event. vfestival.com
Creamfields Fri 24th – Sun 26th Aug This international event returns with another batch of dance floor giants to lighten the summer. Set in fields of the North-west, this festival, which has won the Uk Festival “Best Dance Event” title three years in a row, brings the largest names in the dance scene to one place for three days of sweat and neon, featuring Deadmau5 and Avicii among others. creamfields.com 34

Justin Williams: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk
motorhome
The day has finally come for me to get behind the wheel of a motor home and hit the open road and live the dream. You may already be an experienced driver of motor home, I was not. Louise & I had a plan to head towards the country side with our 3 kids and the au pair. Lets see how we get on with each other and the open road?
Landcruise www.landcruise.uk.com I searched on line and found Landcruise.co.uk who were based in Chichester, and they had some late offers available on a 6 berth motor home, that will do I thought to myself. Found their office on a well maintained farm near Chichester and met Lorraine and once all the formalities were out of the way I was passed to Nigel. I must say at this point that Nigel and the whole team were extremely professional and people friendly and I was led through all the wonderful options / gadgets / dos & don’ts of the motor home. Off we went and waved goodbye. I found it to be easy to drive and slowly got my confidence even waving each time we saw a fellow motor home on our
travels. We headed to a quiet spot in West Sussex where a good friend of mine lives on the land who kindly offered us free access to park up and feed into his electricity if we wanted. Louise took charge of the vehicle’s manual which reminded us about the water, power and general use. It was, thankfully, very easy to follow. We had a great four days and returned the home back to Nigel & Lorraine vowing to return this summer/Autumn to hire it again as we had a positive experience. “Maybe we could get it for Bestival in September?” I suggested to Louise “On our own?” Without kids & au pair!

livemusic It’s official Summer’s been cancelled due to rain! Or has it? Who knows? Kids may be splashing in puddles or the pool and there may not be lobster-like tans by the pier. We might be sporting sunhats or so’westers but while the weather is predictably British, the live music line-up for August is somewhat more unpredictable so indulge in the rebirth of a superstar and some folking great upcoming talents. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk
Ty Segall Wed 1st, The Green Door Store Now if you like your surf rock surfy, and, well, rocky, then Ty Segall is your guy.25 With a dirty voice, dirty mind and chords that sounds like they’ve just been washed up on the beach, tracks like Girlfriend will be swimming around in your head for days. And what better place to experience piratey delights than the Green Door Store? ty-segall.com
Conor Maynard Wed 1st, Concorde 2 Youngster Maynard is making all the right noises towards becoming a bonafide superstar. He’s young, talented, the ladies love him, and he’s a hometown lad, so there’s extra reason to cheer his success. Signed to Parlophone Records after gaining success in uploading videos online while still a school student, he has sold 200k copies of debut single ‘Can’t Say No’, which isn’t bad... conor-maynard.com
My Friend Lester
Fri 3rd, The Jive Money And now for something completely different. Billie Holiday and super saxophonist Lester Young’s collaborations were so heartbreakingly beautiful that it was always assumed they did more than just play music together. Karen Spicer directs Maria McAteer and Bjorn Dahlberg as they explore that untold story here. Expect sultry looks, nervous glances, hungry stares, and perhaps some jazz along the way too. thejivemonkey.com 40

Willy Mason
livemusic
Wed 8th, Proud Brighton Ballroom Willy Mason is a talented young man - so talented, in fact, it makes you realise life is simply unfair. Case in point is Restless Fugitive, a beguiling track that shouldn’t have been allowed to be written by anybody younger than 68. With material from his third album in store, plus hits like Oxygen, this man has a voice, a message, and humour. willymason.net
The Felice Brothers Thurs 16th, The Haunt The industry is full of bands with ‘stories’ that are as real as my third foot, the Felice Brothers are worth hearing about. The guys are former street musicians who often played illegally, but it seems to have paid off - Frankie’s Gun has been played all over TV in recent years, and the band’s gorgeous bluesy sound is reminiscent of Bob Dylan. thefelicebrothers.com
Esben & The Witch Fri 24th, Prince Albert If you like your guitars to screech like an oncoming apocalypse, then Esben and the Witch may tempt you with their beguiling charms and incantations. The beauty of Rachel Davies’ voice alongside heart-pounding drums and bloody good guitars is a true joy in a live setting, and within the Albert, the hometown masters are sure to whip up something magical. esbenandthewitch.co.uk
Will & The People Fri 31st, The Hope Described loosely as a five piece ‘collective’, Will and the People are a madcap mixture of ska, funk, reggae, pop, folk and just about everything in between. If you’ve got a thing for Paolo Nutini, these guys are right up your alley, which is just as well seeing as the Scot himself said that their shows are ‘kicking off!’ Praise indeed. willandthepeople.com

clublife Just lately bank holidays seem to mean just one thing – The Electric Playboys. They return to rave it up at The Gladstone on Saturday 25th. The Bass Drop and Bootleg DJs provide the tunes in the beer garden before switching inside when the sun goes down. So if a full day of reggae, old school hip hop, funk, house and drum & bass is your thing then look no further. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

Fri 24th- Sun 26th, Komedia A firm fixture in the Brighton calendar for a fair few years, August bank holiday will see the Mod Scene return to its spiritual home for three nights of the best Mod DJs spinning underground 60s dance gems. This has been a sell out in previous years, so it’s advisable to book early to avoid disappointment. komedia.co.uk
Wolfgang Gartner + Union Sat 25th, Coalition Whether or not his progressively more maximilist take on electro-house is your bag or not, you have to respect Wolfgang Gartner’s rise through the electro-house ranks. Union’s sound has been called Crunkstep but it’s unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. This is a new genre of electronic music that has its eyes set on the future and is destined to create it. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/coalition
Gilles Peterson Sun 26th, Concorde 2 Gilles Peterson has been flooding the airwaves with his worldwide beats since 1998 but was spinning tunes way before Radio One took him to the masses. Founder of the Acid Jazz and Talkin’ Loud record labels he continues to be a breath of fresh air on the dance floors of the world with his unique selection of music that is rarely heard elsewhere. concorde2.co.uk
