ourcity Christmas and New Year are just round the corner and they offer a time for reflection on the past year. 2012 saw the launch of many new projects to improve different parts of the city, such as the restoration of The Level, a revamped Brighton Centre hosting conferences ranging from the Taekwon-do World Cup to the Trades Union Congress conference, and work began on a new library at Woodingdean. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George

Welcoming 2013 Many sustainable transport improvements have been made to areas like the Old Shoreham Road, and we saw the continuation of successful events such as People’s Day, the Brighton Marathon, the Brighton Digital Festival. The end of the year is also a time to think of those who are less fortunate – the many who will find it difficult to make ends meet this season. The recession has hit many families hard; unemployment is still relatively high and reforms to the welfare system are leaving many out of pocket.

what’sondec12jan13

However Brighton & Hove has reasons to be optimistic. We’ve seen the launch of a local Living Wage campaign to cut poverty pay, a new citywide Apprenticeships scheme, and we’re setting up a local ‘Community Banking Partnership’ to help people in financial difficulty avoid becoming victims of loan sharks and expensive credit agreements. Economically the city is doing well, and is bucking the national trend. There are some exciting projects on the horizon that will help our local economy and the people it employs. For example we’re in the running to part-host the Rugby World Cup in a few years’ time, for funding for ultra fast broadband, and we’re hoping to become a UN ‘Biosphere’. Big challenges remain ahead, but I’m confident that together we’ll be able to overcome them. I wish you and your families a very merry Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.

futureevents

futureevents We have a couple of months of major musical moments coming up: Villagers come to town and Nottingham’s child prodigy Jake Bugg playing The Dome are just two. Roll in the aisles with airborne airhead Pam Ann and get yourself that tattoo you’ve always wanted at the Hilton Hotel! Those alone are all in February so if you want to check them all out, make sure you plan accordingly! Gareth Becker: future@whatsonguide.co.uk

Brighton Half Marathon Sun 17th Feb, Madeira Drive What did you do today to make yourself fitter, healthier, stronger? How about helping those in need? Nothing? No, me neither. Perhaps we could both do worse than to sign up for the Brighton Half Marathon. From 2004 the event has grown from 200 hundred runners to 10,000 it raises funds for The Sussex Beacon, who help those living with HIV. brightonhalfmarathon.com

Villagers Sun 17th Feb, The Old Market From Dublin, Villagers, had huge success with their debut album from 2010, ‘Becoming A Jackal’ which was nominated for the Mercury prize. Since then they have opened for the likes of Neil Young and Tracy Chapman. They are a difficult band to pin down to a genre; their emotive songs are a heartfelt mix of alternative folk and stripped down poptunes. theoldmarket.com

Pam Ann Sun 17th Feb, Theatre Royal The queen of transatlantic comedy cruises back in Brighton with a new show. The alter-ego of Australian comedian Caroline Reid, Pam Ann’s career has really taken off (sorry) in the past couple of years. She sold out the London Palladium twice in 2010 and counts celebrities like Madonna amongst her fans. If you’re a fan of camp humour, you shouldn’t miss this! atgtickets.com 6

Brighton Tattoo Convention

futureevents

Sat 16th & Sun 17th Feb, Hilton Hotel Brighton This is the 6th year of this celebration of all things tattoo. Tattooists from across the globe converge on our city to showcase their skills. I know it isn’t until February but it will sell out fast so you’re being forewarned. Last year I bought two prints from the convention and this year there’s a whole gallery of artwork to peruse. brightontattoo.com

Jake Bugg Mon 18th Feb, Brighton Dome This young man from Nottingham is fast becoming a major UK sensation mentioned alongside such illustrious artists as Donavan, Bob Dylan and the Beatles. He played the BBC ‘Introducing’ stage at Glastonbury 2011 and this year supported Noel Gallagher’s new band and appeared on Later… with Jools Holland. Think a modern UK version of Woody Guthrie, must be heard to be believed! brightondome.org

The XX Thurs 20th Dec, Brighton Centre The XX exist in a time and space of their own making. Three years on, from their debut, self titled, album The XX, are back with their second, ‘Coexist’, and a new perspective. Where ‘XX’ leant in close to whisper in your ear, ‘Coexist’ gazes warmly in your eyes. Much has happened to lead to this point: most pertinently, they’ve grown up. brightoncentre.co.uk 10

Rocky Horror Picture Show,

focus

Thurs 20th Dec – Sat 5th Jan, Theatre Royal It’s 40 years since Rocky Horror arrived on London’s Kings Road to a mixture of adulation and certain amount of shocked response from media and audiences alike. I saw the show in that first year and still have very strong memories of Richard O’Brien’s amazing creation. It’s utterly wonderful fun from the first note until the last. atgtickets.com/venues/ theatre-royal-brighton

filmclub 2012 has been a great year for film but 2013 is shaping up to be just as good. As well as remakes (‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘The Evil Dead’), blockbuster sequels (‘A Good Day To Die Hard’, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ and ‘Iron Man 3’) and prequels (‘Monsters University’) get ready for ‘World War Z’ where Brad Pitt battles zombies and the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger in ‘The Last Stand’. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk

In Your Hands Out Now, On DVD

We first encounter Anna (Kristen Scott Thomas) as she cautiously leaves a suburban house and returns home to tell everyone how well her holiday went and that everything is perfectly fine. After a visit to the police she reveals that she had, in fact, been abducted and held hostage by someone with a long standing grudge against her. So begins this odd French thriller that is as frustrating in places as it is engrossing. Scott Thomas and her captor Pio Marmai put in great performances, which is fortunate as they are the sole

characters for the majority of the running time. Writer and director Lola Doillon reveals the plot slowly but this only serves to make the film more fascinating. The ending certainly leaves you with more questions than you would like and the construction of the plot does mean it lacks the jeopardy to elevate it to a truly outstanding thriller. But, these small gripes aside, ‘In Your Hands’ is still an intriguing insight into just how fragile, dangerous and unpredictably baffling our emotions can be.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey In Cinemas, 13th Dec

filmclub

How Peter Jackson is going to turn J.R.R Tolkein’s slim volume into three films is anyone’s guess but you can guarantee it’s going to be an epic journey. Martin Freeman plays the young Bilbo Baggins alongside Lord of The Rings veterans Sir Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis and Elijah Wood. Joining them are Hugo Weaving, Billy Connolly, Barry Humphries and Sylvester McCoy.

Life of Pi In Cinemas, 20th Dec Based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel, this curious tale tells of Pi, the son of a zoo keeper, adrift in a lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, an orang-utan and a Bengal tiger. Ang Lee directs and, a reliable source informs me, that the 3D is the most breathtaking since ‘Avatar’. Late contender for movie experience of the year anyone?

Django Unchained In Cinemas, 18th Jan A new film from Quentin Tarantino is always big news and this one’s especially exciting as he, once again, teams up with Oscar winner Christoph Waltz and Samuel L Jackson. Jamie Foxx plays the title role in this tale of a slave turned bounty hunter out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner. Expect a fresh take on the well-worn Western genre.

livemusic Well if this bumper issue doesn’t whet your whistle for some live music, I don’t know what will. Two months of shows to pick from means the wheat has been sorted for the chaff, leaving only tasty wholesome goodness for the cruel winter months ahead of us. Sexy French electro? Heart-wrenching folktronica? Complex jazz fusion? Or perhaps good old-fashioned punk rock? It’s all here for festive delights and post-festive comedowns. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

Phronesis Sun 2nd Dec, Komedia A trio of talents await with the mind-boggling jazz rhythms of Phronesis, who will twist your melon…man. Led by devilish Danish double-bassist Jasper Hoiby - who plays his instrument as if he was mimicking bass-slapping legend Flea in the Red Hot Chili Peppers - slip on your trilby, sip a martini or three and marvel at some outstanding musicianship. It may leave brains knotted. jasperhoiby.com

The Rifles Mon 3rd Dec, The Haunt If you’re partial to a slice of the Stones, dig Dylan or love London, then The Rifles may well be the ones for you. The London five-piece sound more British than a bulldog growling at the Queen over a cup of tea, but their punchy, mod-flavoured moody loveliness should get you dancing more than you ever thought possible. Expect to dance hard. therifles.net

Sebastien Tellier Thurs 6th Dec, Coalition This is a nice little curveball for you right here - multi-instrumentalist Tellier looks like a drunk uncle dressed up like Justin Timberlake, but he also sounds like JT too. Check out his uber-sexy tracks like ‘Kilometer’ and try to contain yourself when he sweeps in from France to give your ears some love - not like that! He sang Eurovision as well … uk.myspace.com/sebastientellier 38

Fri 7th Dec, Concorde 2 Punk hooks don’t come much tighter, or sleazier, or, hookier than courtesy of Buckcherry. The LA rockers will be touring their sixth album, so have a wealth of material to call on. Expect to get down and dirty at Concorde 2; with titles like ‘Too Drunk…”, you’ll be expected to on your worst behaviour I imagine, which is no bad thing down here. buckcherry.com

Daughter Thurs17th Jan, The Parish Church Of St Mary This London-based trio have dreamt up a beautiful mix of folk and electronics that really needs to be heard in the early hours while your heart is breaking. And if that’s a little depressing, then tough, because I double-dare you not to shed a tear to the gorgeous single ‘Youth’. Nab tickets now before they disappear into the ether. ohdaughter.com

New Brunswick: Battle Of The Blues Fri 25th Jan, The Brunswick Gentlemen and gentlewomen, rest up on the 24th, for on the following day the gods of the blues do battle. The Brunswick hosts one of five heats for the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival in the US, so there’s a lot at stake for those who take part in it. Expect expert playing and plenty of bearded wonders. tourismnewbrunswick.co.uk

Metz Mon 28th Jan, Green Door Store I think it’s fairly certain these guys will blow your tiny little minds. That’s not an insult, you’ll simply realise you won’t know what’s hit you until Metz have been and long gone. They’re hard, fast, thrashy and a law unto themselves - check out ‘Negative Space’ for an early taster. A perfect venue for a perfect band. Which is, well, perfect. subpop.com/artists/metz

clublife As I sit down to write this Christmas is a mere blip on the horizon but some of you will be reading this when New Year has become nothing but a distant dull throb. So just remember that a club night is for life, not just for Christmas. If you’ve enjoyed a particular night, tell your friends, return and make 2013 the most fun year for clubbing in recent years. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

DJ Yoda Sat 1st Dec, Coalition Following a successful run of big Festival dates over the summer and the release of a great new album, ‘Chop Suey’, DJ Yoda returns to Brighton for more cutting edge scratch mayhem. Q Magazine declared him ‘one of the ten DJs to see before you die’ and he continues to pull no punches with his audio/ visual extravaganza. Expect the unexpected and one helluva party. drinkinbrighton.co.uk

Private #5 Fri 7th Dec, Green Door Store Private is a bimonthly party celebrating The Next Big Thing and brings together the hottest DJs and bands that you will definitely be hearing about soon. Tonight’s line up features Peace, Gabriel Bruce and James supplying the live music, while Mike Diver, Samuel Organ, Teen Creeps and Brighton Noise take to the decks. Not only that but it’s free entry. Marvellous. peaceforeverever.co.uk

Orbital Tue 11th Dec, Brighton Dome One of the most influential dance acts of all time, the brothers Hartnoll return to the city to show they are still as relevant today as they have always been. This year has seen the release of a fantastic new album, ‘Wonky’, and a string of live shows that have been stunning visually and sonically. Tonight’s show promises to be no exception. His You Tube video, in which he mixed 39 samples into three and a half minutes of music live, has currently had over fourteen million views and his total combined views total over fifty three million. soundcloud.com/madeon

Applesauce Fri 14th Dec, Concorde 2 After a successful opener with Vitalic, the Applesauce team aren’t resting on their laurels for the second outing. Laurent Garnier has taken DJing and live performance to the next level with his LBS (Live Boot Sessions/Loud Bass & Samples) show. Tonight he’ll be teaming up with French Techno pioneer Scan X for a four hour set that will tear the roof off. concorde2.co.uk

Wrapped In Plastic Thurs 20th Dec, Green Door Store Brighton’s very own Anti-Ghost Moon Ray collective presents a night of live music and DJs in homage to David Lynch. Transforming the venue into a “Twin Peaks pine forest dream” guests can expect the whole night to be fully committed to the Lynchaesthetic; from decor and visuals to the music - including specially-devised live covers and DJ sets. Damn fine. thegreendoorstore.co.uk

Modern Life Is Still Rubbish Fri 11th Jan, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar What better way to get rid of the New Year blues than two floors of the finest nineties’ tunes that money can buy. Downstairs you can enjoy Britpop and Madchester whilst upstairs relive those forgotten gems, the B-sides and album tracks that you won’t hear on the dancefloor. As if you need convincing more, it’s absolutely free. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/stickymikesfrogbar
