futureevents Puppets and photography are just two of the things coming up in Brighton to get excited about. And that’s on top of another great band from Athens, Georgia, the queen of comedy Joan Rivers, a former Never Mind The Buzzcocks presenter, the fantastic Legally Blond and a whole host of film-related events, all part of Brighton’s celebratory festival on documentaries. This year is shaping up quite nicely isn’t it? Tom Hasson: future@whatsonguide.co.uk
Dark Side Of The Moon Feb - Tue 20th March, The Founders Room On the 20th January 1972 Pink Floyd took to the stage at Brighton Dome and performed Dark Side Of The Moon for the very first time. Rare and intimate images from the show and the following tour will be on display at the Founders Room through to 20th March. The best part about it though? It’s free! brightondome.org

SEE - The Brighton Documentary Film Festival
futureevents
Fri 30th March - Sun 1st April, Various A city-wide celebration of documentaries; films that can inspire, inform, upset and delight using nothing but real life. Screenings and talks take place over the weekend, including a talk from Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder on his upcoming UFO doc. series and a showing of Anyone Can Play Guitar, a film about influential Oxford music scene. seefestival.org
Simon Amstell Sat 2nd June, Brighton Dome It’s odd to realise that Simon Amstell only fronted four series of Never Mind The Buzzcocks compared to the 17 Mark Lamarr presented. He was so good as the presenter that many see it as his show. On top of that, he created one of my favourite shows of 2010, Grandma’s House, and is now touring a stand-up show. I can’t wait. brightondome.org
Avenue Q Mon 4th - Sat 9th June, Theatre Royal In 2004, Avenue Q won the Tony Award for Best New Musical, Best Book Of A Musical and Best Original Score. Fast forward eight years and the musical, set on a fictional New York street and featuring both human and puppet cast members, still feels as fresh as it did then. Get your tickets now and prepare to laugh, hard. ATGtickets.com
Joan Rivers Sat 20th Oct, Brighton Centre You might think I’m writing about Joan Rivers’ Now Or Never Tour far too early in the year but believe me, as possibly the funniest comedian alive, her show will sell out. I’ve been laughing so hard at memories of past TV appearances that it’s taken me three attempts just to write this. This is definitely my most anticipated show of 2012. brightoncentre.co.uk

febfocus Hmm, what to do this month? Discover the secrets of a foreign culture or take a plane trip along the coast? Learn a new instrument or how to draw people naked? Why not do the lot! Throw in an iconic punk band, some psychedelic rock history and top it all off with an X-rated pantomime. You can’t get much better than that, so what has next month got in store? Greg Furlong: focus@whatsonguide.co.uk
Sightseeing Flights Wed 1st Feb – Sat 31st March, Shoreham Airport Fancy getting a birds’ eye view of Brighton, the Downs and the Sussex Coast? Then grab your chance now. At just £48 per person for two it’s the perfect gift for a special occasion and you can even enjoy a bottle of bubbly ‘in flight’ too! With discounts for groups and kids too I’m amazed I haven’t heard of this sooner. brightonscenic.co.uk
Harpin’ by the Sea Winter Festival Sat 4th, The Brunswick After a hugely successful festival last year, Harpin’ by the Sea is back to brighten up the winter with a celebration of that most versatile of little instruments the harmonica. There are workshops running all day, with expert tuition for all levels, so if you can breathe in and out you’ll be jamming by the end of the day. harpsurgery.com
Misfits Sun 5th, Concorde 2 Instantly recognizable, the Misfits ‘Skull’ logo is a staple of pop culture. Their unique brand of B-movie inspired horror punk has influenced countless bands. Boasting a new line up helmed by original bassist Jerry Only, a new album and a massive back catalogue of fast and furious, chest-pounding classics, you’ll be glad you joined the ever-growing legion of ‘Fiends’ as fans are (dis)affectionately known. concorde2.co.uk 6

A-LADD-IN
Thurs 23rd Feb - Sun 4th Mar, Pavilion Theatre Get ready for a high-camp carve-up as Brighton’s alternative adult pantomime celebrates 10 years of outrageous entertainment. filmclub The 3D juggernaut rolls on and never fails to elicit heated debate amongst film fans. No one can deny that it has rejuvenated a flagging industry and got people flocking back to the cinema but, personally, I have not seen anything since ‘Avatar’ that’s worth shelling out the extra money (‘Captain America’ I’m looking at you). Let’s hope 2012’s filmmakers will actually realise what an engrossing medium it can be. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk
Carnage In Cinemas, Fri 3rd Controversial director Roman Polanski can seemingly turn his hand to any genre; horror (‘Rosemary’s Baby’), gritty film noir (‘Chinatown’) and political thriller (‘The Ghost’). With ‘Carnage’ he tries his hand at black comedy with extremely satisfying results. Based on a play by Yasmina Reza and co written by Polanski it sees an uptight professional couple (Kate Winslet and Chistoph Waltz) meeting at the home of a working class couple (Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly) to talk about their children fighting but it’s not long before accusations are flying, sides are being taken and the afternoon begins to spiral out of control. It speaks volumes for Polanski’s talent as a filmmaker that, even though he still can’t set foot in America due to a past indiscretion, Hollywood’s A list are still queuing up to work with him. On the strength of the performances on offer here it’s understandable 18
what’sonfeb12
why. Given the material and three Oscar winners in such a confined space it could easily have become a preposterously over the top acting fest but it’s to the director’s credit that this never occurs, even at the most hysterical moments. The direction is superb with Polanski retaining the dynamics of the stage while, at the same time, making great use of movement with the space becoming more claustrophobic as the situation intensifies. It may not throw up any fresh comment on the human condition but, if you enjoy the uncomfortable, confrontational humour of Mike Leigh or the conversationalist tone of mid period Woody Allen then ‘Carnage’ is the film for you.

Seagulls Lotto Win £1k eekly 29/03/12 W Seagulllotto.co.uk Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace 3D In Cinemas, Thurs 9th Not content with ruining the childhood memories of a whole generation, George Lucas has to drag the hugely disappointing prequels out in public yet again. Although the thought of pod racers bursting through the screen appeals, I’m not sure I’d be able to handle having Jar Jar Binks mere inches from my face without trying to take him out.
The Muppets In Cinemas, 10th Some franchises just make you groan when they roll out another instalment but who can ever get tired of Kermit and co.? Thirteen years after their debut movie outing they’re back to save their old theatre from an oil tycoon who wants to drill under it. The fact that they have to get Animal out of rehab should make it worth the ticket price alone.
Rampart In Cinemas, Fri 24th With the tagline ‘the most corrupt cop you’ve ever seen on screen’, co written by James Ellroy (L.A Confidential) and starring Woody Harrelson, ‘Rampart’ looks like it could be this year’s ‘Bad Lieutenant’. With appearances from Sigourney Weaver, Ice Cube, Ned Beatty and Steve Buscemi this sounds like the perfect fix for crime movie addicts while you’re waiting for Tarrantino’s cinematic return to the seedy underworld.

barlife Any partner worth their salt is going to want to be taken out for an intimate drink on the strange festival of Valentine. But where to go? Which one of Brighton’s many pubs will provide a memorable evening and perhaps lead to lust filled activities later? Relax, I’ve got you covered. Here’s a list of places that should provide just the thing and please even the most demanding of dates. Danny Bowman: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk
Hotel Pelirocco 10 Regency Square, 01273 327055 The bar is in one of the most unique hotels you will ever behold, I’d wager and one definitely suited to the more alternative of persuasions. Try one of their cult cocktails like the Del Boy, Reggae Sunsplash or the whimsically titled Dirty Fuckin’ Rotter. If you get lucky you can get one of the individually themes rooms. I recommend Ophelia Fancy.
Regency Tavern 32/34 Russell Square, 01273 325652 Reputed to have been the first gay pub in Brighton, today, although open to all, is still a campy heaven full of plush furnishings and guilt fittings, featuring a piano, leopard print thrones, prancing cherubs and the kind of light fittings perfect for a passionate rendezvous. They serve Asahi by the pint and cute, individual champagne bottles and accompanying ice buckets.
Pull & Pump 1-2 Clarence Gardens, 01273 328263 A little gem in the centre of town that comes highly recommended. Provides an intimate, perfectly lit venue for a date with welcoming and expert staff to help you negotiate over the fifty tequilas that they stock. They offer a Tex Mex menu if you had dinner in mind to help soak up all that tequila. Has a nice outdoor terrace, too. 20

74 St. James’s Street, 01273 671119 Beautifully decorated venue that is a mix between bohemian and gothic. It’s hard to say what this place specialises in as it boasts an impressive cocktails list, over sixty beers (including Boston Lager on tap) and the best ciders in the city, served by great staff. Intimacy is key here so, regarding the layout, it’s the perfect place to take a date.
Caxton Arms 36 North Gardens, 01273 725866 A no fuss place to take a date, situated near Brighton station. Nice staff and run by a nice bloke. The layout is good with a saloon area, separate lounge area and cosy beer garden. Lit perfectly for those intimate conversations or a sneaky kiss. Has a very impressive menu and one of the top places to go for a Sunday Roast.
Blanch House 17 Atlingworth Street, 01273 603504 What better way to take a date out then to the hotel bar of one of a boutique hotel in one of the iconic Georgian buildings that really signifies Brighton. Situated in the heart of Kemp Town, and a short walk from the sea front, the bar’s superbly luxuriant décor well stocked bar and professional staff will surely provide a memorable occasion.
Seattle Bar The Waterfront, Brighton Marina, 01273 679799 Situated in the lavish Hotel Seattle in the heart of Brighton’s Marina. Bring your special friend to this well lit and plushly decorated bar and enjoy some of the amazing waterfront views Brighton has to offer. From 5:45pm until 7pm they host cocktail master classes, from £20 per head, with instruction from a world class mixologist.

livemusic So as the bitter winds of January become the slightly less bitter winds of February, we move onwards and upwards through the musical calendar. We have chimpish DJs, electronica royalty, ethereal offerings from across the pond and, we have, well, We Have Band. So whatever your taste, make sure your treat a loved one to a early/delayed Valentine’s Day musical treat to warm your hearts. Either that, or just treat yourself. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk
King Creosote Sat 4th, St Georges Church The Fife-based Kenny Anderson, once of Skuobhie Dubh Orchestra and Khartoum Heroues, is now working his magic as the rather more regal King Creosote. With a heady mix of electronic beats and acoustic laments, Anderson is a man of the times, and his collaboration with Jon Hopkins - entitled Diamond Mine earned them both a Mercury Prize 2011 nomination. Long live the King! kingcreosote.com
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Tues 7th, Coalition Clap your hands and say yeah for, well, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the American indie rockers who last played in Brighton almost six years to the day. With a strong mix of euphoric guitars and synths just itching to be heard, Alec Ounsworth and his fellow Clappers are sure to go down a treat with material from new album Hysterical. clapyourhandssayyeah.com
Michael Kiwanuka Wed 15th, Komedia After his gorgeous track Home Again appeared at number 2 of MTV2’s hottest videos recently, big things are tipped for soul musician Michael Kiwanuka. Nominated for the BBC’s Sound of 2012 poll, the young singer’s revealing honesty and oxymoronic style of lazy directness are winning him new followers far and wide. So catch him at Komedia before you can’t afford to see him again. michaelkiwanuka.com 30

Thurs 16th, The Haunt While most will not know the hard-to-miss name of Grouplove, many football fanatics will have been blissfully whistling along to their catchy tracks Colours on the latest FIFA 12 game. Sounding a little like Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse brawling in an alleyway, the LA five-piece band know how to bring the noise so to speak, so check them out. But no group loving. grouplovemusic.com
Melissa Etheridge Sun 19th, Brighton Dome Multi-million selling, Grammy and Oscar-winning American singersongwriter (I’m the Only One, Come to My Window) brings her distinctive brand of US heartland rock to Brighton in support of her most recent album Icon. Compared to everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Janis Joplin, Etheridge is renowned for her heartfelt, confessional lyrics, unique vocal delivery and deft blend of folk rock musicianship. brightondome.org
InMe Thurs 23rd, Concorde 2 If it’s a raucous, epic show you’re after, then alt metal stalwarts InMe are heading down to Concorde 2 in anticipation of their latest album. The Essex quartet, most of whom formed together when they were just 14, have built up a sizeable fan base with a steady output of well-received records coupled with the intensity of their live performances, so dive right in. myspace.com/inmeofficial
We Have Band Sat 25th, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Thinking of names can be tricky, so it’s just as well that We Have Band plumped for an honest one. The trio of London and Manchester ragamuffins have gone from strength to strength after winning Glastonbury 2009’s Emerging Talent Competition; their indie electro is for the head as well as the hips. For fans of Hot Chip and hot chips. wehaveband.com

clublife Since licensing was introduced for flyer distribution, promoters have been trying alternative methods to make people aware of their nights. Posters are still very much evident and the social networks are a great way of keeping people up to date but print is still very much alive. So send your events to me at the email address below by the fifth of the previous month for a chance to get featured. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk
Guerilla Rocks Tuesdays, Audio Since time began, your regular fix of weekday loud rock and metal mayhem has always been found at the Pav Tav but in a shock decision the Guerilla Rocks guys have found a new home on the seafront. Fear not though as they promise the usual mix of tunes from Slayer to The Prodigy, Nirvana to Blink 182 and the usual ridiculously cheap drink prices. audiobrighton.com
Songs For The Deaf Sat 4th, Pav Tav From the people that brought you Snap Crackle & Britpop comes Songs for the Deaf, a new monthly night celebrating the best ear pounding anthems from the start of the 90’s through to the early 00s. Judgement Dave, Mikie K and Dave Rave will be playing the best in Grunge, Stoner Rock, Desert Rock, College Rock, Skate Punk and Ska Punk! pavtav.com
Shy FX Sat 4th, Concorde 2 Shy FX is one of the original pioneers of Jungle and Drum and Bass and has been at the forefront of the movement for nearly twenty years. He is probably best known for ‘Original Nuttah’ and has recently produced tracks for Dizzee Rascal. Tonight he is joined by Breakage, who unleashes his own brand of raw Dubstep amongst the masses, and Youngman MC. concorde2.com 36

clublife
Sat 4th, Coalition Dubstep dandy and local bounder, High Rankin is one of dance music’s more eccentric artists. Having just got back from a sell out tour of Australia, this is his first UK full live show of 2012 and his first Brighton appearance of the year. His music brims with character and his personality engulfs the dance floor so get ready for some moustache based mayhem. myspace.com/highrankin
Carnivalesque – Lover’s Ball Fri 10th, Komedia With the arrow of Eros poised to strike, the Carnivalesque Lover’s Ball returns for another swinging party! Bring a lover or meet one at this spectacular live showcase. Plus the basement Polka Party and cake! Upstairs - Swing Ninja’s and Boxettes (LIVE) Cabaret act tbc. Downstairs Gypsy Hill (Live) Merlin Shepard (Live) and DJ Penny Metal. Dress code - Sexy retro vintage. komedia.co.uk/brighton
Nowhere To Run Fri 24th, The Haunt The Haunt has only recently become one of the premier venues in the city. This is down to booking some great live bands and club nights that people actually want to go to. Nowhere To Run covers the range of music that sprang from the heady days of the sixties so expect a good mixture of Soul, Motown, Pop and Rock N Roll. thehauntbrighton.co.uk
Late Night Lingerie Fri 24th, Sticky Mikes Frog Bar This is a club night with a difference as it worships at the altar of live music instead of DJs. Tonight’s line up includes Skirts, Tyrannosaurus Dead, The Valentines, The Gaa Gaas, Cousin and Whaleman. Too many gigs finish really early these days so this is an ideal chance to get to hear some loud guitars in a club environment. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/ stickymikesfrogbar
