ourcity

ourcity About 300 families in Brighton & Hove are at risk of becoming homeless as a result of the government’s plan to cap benefits. The amount these households will receive will drop significantly, regardless of how many children live in the household or if someone in the family works part-time. The idea, we’re told, was to encourage people into full-time work, save the public purse money and make benefits ‘fairer’. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George

Unemployment & The Benefit Cap On average across the country there are three unemployed people chasing every job and it’s even more competitive in our city. The government’s own flagship scheme to help people find work has only helped one in thirty people land a permanent job. Austerity cuts mean ordinary people have less money to spend and the economy is stalling. There just aren’t enough jobs to go around, but the government wants to penalise poorer families who want to work for not being able to find it.

to pay their rent or find anywhere cheaper to live in the city. Local taxpayers in the city will fork out about £1.1m to help re-house the families that will be turfed out of their homes. The benefit cap makes no financial sense. Whatever savings the government may make will be dwarfed by the costs to local services and charities to deal with the consequences.

As with so many government plans, the benefit cap grabs headlines but will run up a bigger bill in the long-run. It will hurt scores of families at a time of There will be always be a debate increased joblessness and rising about the welfare system. However living costs, so we’re doing all the government’s determination we can to help those affected to slash benefits to meet targets, while lobbying the government to rather than on the basis of need, change their minds. means families will be left unable

Jack Dee

There are all kinds of things to get involved in as 2013 heads towards middle age. Stand-up comedy in the shape of the not to be missed Eddie Izzard and professional grump Jack Dee. Great food that comes out of the ground and might even help you live longer, energy ideas that do the same for the planet, oh and the obligatory serving of great music. Get planning!

Fri 22nd March, Brighton Dome Jack Dee is the epitome of the dark comic: sarcastic, dry, pessimistic, dead-pan and absolutely hilarious. He has been making regular trips to Brighton with his stand up ever since he first blew up, back in the early 90s, and is well known for his TV appearances on shows like QI, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and Have I Got News For You. brightondome.org

Tattoo Convention

Okay so we dragged ourselves through the financial penury of January and survived. Now you deserve to give yourself a treat and this month has those in spades. There is literally something for everyone this month and I can only brush the surface of the rich sea of events. However those that I have chosen are particularly stunning so join me in the previews and then at the events themselves.

Sat 16th & Sun 17th, Hilton Hotel This is the 6th year of this celebration of all things tattoo. Tattooists from across the globe converge on our city to showcase their skills. Make sure that you allow plenty of time to revel in this brilliant spectacle of inking. Last year I bought two prints from the convention and this year there’s a whole gallery of artwork to peruse.

Wreck–It Ralph

The Christmas blockbusters are finally giving way to a whole slew of interesting releases in cinemas this month. David Cronenberg’s son, Brandon, unleashes ‘Antiviral’ (1st), ‘Warm Bodies’ (8th) sees a zombie fall in love with the girlfriend of one of his victims and the Wachowski brothers return for ‘Cloud Atlas’ (22nd) starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. ‘Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters’ (22nd) also looks a whole lot of fun.

Fri 8th, In Cinemas Ever wondered what your favourite video game characters get up to when you’re not manipulating them? This latest from Disney is an homage to the games of old as a villain who wants to be a hero brings havoc to the arcade where he lives. Kids will love it and parents will be filled with nostalgia at the Pac Man and Street Fighter cameos.

Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk

Grave Encounters 2 Mon 4th, On DVD

The original film saw reporter Lance Pearson (Sean Rogerson) and his crew getting more than they bargained for whilst filming the latest episode of their paranormal reality show ‘Grave Encounters’ in the abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital. The sequel starts with film student Alex Wright (Richard Harmon) anonymously receiving some unseen footage of Pearson which, after further research, makes him believe that it may not have been a work of fiction after all. He then sets out, with the help of his friends, to make his own documentary and uncover the truth. ‘Grave Encounters 2’ takes the whole myth surrounding the found footage genre and pushes it to the limit. Acknowledging that the film exists in the real world makes for a nice post modernistic take on the often carbon copy sequel formula but the added narrative only seems to detract from the scare factor. The most effective frights come before the crew reach their final destination, courtesy of some 20

unexpected jump cuts from the original. If you enjoyed the first offering then there’s plenty of mouth stretching ghostly fun to be had here but, although not the grave disappointment it could have been, this sequel proves that too much information can soften the blow and nothing is quite as terrifying as blundering around in the dark facing the unknown.

A Liar’s Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman Fri 8th, In Cinemas Python stalwart Graham Chapman died in 1989 but he recorded himself reading his book, ‘A Liars Autobiography’ before he did and this form the basis for this animated tale. John Cleese, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam appear alongside Chapman for the first time in twenty three years in possibly the oddest release this month.

Hitchcock Fri 8th, In Cinemas Everyone knows Alfred Hitchcock is the master of suspense but little is known about his wife, Alma Reville, who he listened to more than the studios. In a great piece of casting, Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren star in this love story set during the filming of ‘Psycho’ in 1959. Scarlett Johansson takes on Janet Leigh while James D’Arcy, fresh from ‘Cloud Atlas’ plays Anthony Perkins.

A Good Day To Die Hard Thurs 14th, In Cinemas The first ‘Die Hard’ was a master class in how to make an action movie but the subsequent films in the series, although highly enjoyable, have never quite lived up to it. Bruce Willis returns for a fifth instalment but will a trip to Russia and the addition of Jai Courtney as his son make for another thrilling roller coaster ride?

Earth & Stars 86 Windsor Street, 01273 722879 I walk into this bar and I smile without fail. Situated in the North Laines and tucked away just enough to be a little piece of calm in the storm. The rustic wooden furniture is a perfect compliment to their organic beers, ciders and food. They will have a menu featuring Valentine’s specials and there’s no television to disturb the romance.

Waterhouse Bar Hilton Metropole

Caroline of Brunswick 39 Ditchling Road, 01273 624434 This should be high on your pubs of choice. Its alternative crowd are welcoming so well worth the visit particularly as they’ve got a brand new chef with a new food menu. They are known for great comedy and the brilliant On The Sofa With … night when you are entertained by a visiting celebrity. Even Goths snuggle up you know!.

Kings Road, 01273 775432 If you want elegance and decadent charm to accompany your romancing then The Waterhouse Bar is the venue for you. Relax on the Victorian sea-facing terrace enjoying some quality time whilst indulging your squeeze over their very special Valentine Tea. Fiddler’s Elbow

101 St James Street, 01273 673891 The chilled out atmosphere inside and the garden with individual art and decoration makes it great for girls lunches, coffee for mums and kids, business meetings or late night with your mates. The staff are lovely and indulgent but the chef is creating a special Valentine’s 5 course sharer menu including bubbles and a choice of one of their finer wines. Yum.

11 Boyces Street, 01273 325850 The dark corners of the Fiddler’s are made for romance. Great food, delightful friendly staff and of course quality drinks. They’ve lined up a great live acoustic set for Valentine’s Day. Singer Will Mavin is a local guy who has been compared to Damien Rice. So make sure you and your valentine are there by 8.30pm or you’ll miss the start!

Plan B

Right you filthy mongrels, since you’ll all be getting paid after a penniless January full of leftover turkey, bleak nights and enforced sobriety, I’d say it’s about time you got out and hunted down some top-notch acts to celebrate February. But then again, that’s what I’m here to do - so whether you want punk anarchy, preppy pop, world-weary bliss, world-class jazz, or duty disco, it’s all waiting.

Mon 11th, Brighton Centre You truly haven’t witnessed the brilliance of Plan B until you’ve seen him in full flow live. Benjamin Paul Ballance-Drew has shown he can get crowds swaying with melodic soul or moshing with furiously intellectual hip hop. He’s got the world at his feet, so you’d be a fool to miss one of the UK’s brightest talents in action on your doorstep. time4planb.co.uk

Maria Minerva

Datsuns

Tues 5th, Green Door Store If you like dubby disco pop that sounds like it’s been cooked up in your uncle’s basement, look no further than this talented 23-year-old. With tracks like Ruff Trade and California Scheming drifting in and out like a hazy fog of joy, it’ll be a blissful, unforgettable experience, so get ready to swoon and have your brains and hearts melted. soundcloud.com/mariaminerva

The Haunt, Sat 16th Kiwi rockers The Datsuns will be bringing their own brand of hard rock noisiness to our shore, and you’d be damn fools to miss them, as they’re rather bloody good. It’s brash, it’s sexy, and it’s exactly what you need to chase away the last of those pesky winter blues. Just listen to Harmonic Generator and try not to strut - it’s physically impossible. thedatsuns.com

Courtney Pine

Jake Bugg

Thurs 7th, Komedia Well now, if you’re a fan of jazz then you’re in for a treat, as the world-renowned Courtney Pine is in town to delight your ears. The saxophonist is held in high regard in the jazz community, and is credited as “the UK’s most important jazz instrumentalist” by the Observer. If you want to see a true master in action, look no further. courtneypine.co.uk

Mon 18th, Brighton Dome You will have heard of Jake Bugg by now, but this is an excellent chance to catch the 18-year-old before he’s swept up on sell-out stadium tours. The Nottingham singer-songwriter has that uncanny knack for hooks and lyrics - well, songs I guess - and has a huge online following. A retro sound with a contemporary outlook, he’ll be a star. jakebugg.com

The Bronx

I Am Kloot

Fri 8th, Concorde 2 What can you say about The Bronx that hasn’t already been said? They were a fantastic punk band; they were then a fantastic Mariachi band - and now they’re a fantastic punk band all over again. This is punk with a voice, passion, and you don’t want to miss this circle pit for anything. Bring your best gurning face and a fiery belly. thebronxxx.com/bx4

Thurs 21st, St Bartholemews Church This Manchester three-piece are quite simply all you need to get you through life - gorgeous lyrics that are both playful and painful, looping acoustic guitars and hypnotic drums and bass all blend into a big beautiful sound that’s catchy yet also genuine. GIve tracks Proof and The Same Deep Water As Me and I challenge you not to sob and smile. iamkloot.com

Donky Pitch

As usual this month sees a wide and diverse range of events to satiate even the fussiest of club goers. From live electronica through to brand new nights, if you can’t find anything that you want to go to within, then you’re clearly living in the wrong city. The winter blues should be thawing by now so get yourselves out there and experience the best the country has to offer.

Thurs 7th, The Jazz Place Donky Pitch have been responsible for some of most innovative party line ups that Brighton has seen over the last few years. Tonight they team up with Be Nothing for an amazing line up of hip hop driven electronic club music in an intimate environment. Canada’s Ryan Hemsworth headlines alongside Ninja Tune’s Slugabed, Ghost Mutt, Grinel and the Be Nothing DJs. donkypitch.com

Kemptown Carnival Launch Party

Habitual Fri 1st,The Loft Tonight sees the Habitual night travelling out of London for the first time. From its humble progressive house beginnings the night has morphed into an all encompassing dance music specialist bringing you a journey from the subtlety of Deep House through to the raw energy that is Psy Trance. Sonic Species, Ben Coda and a host of DJs play at the specially transformed venue. habitual.eventwax.com

The Rounder Saturday Social Saturdays, The West Hill One of the most heartbreaking events for Brighton music lovers was the closure of Rounder Records after over forty years of providing vinyl junkies with their fix. The shop may not be there but the legacy continues as familiar faces from behind the counter, Johnny and Steve, take you on a weekly trip of Psych, New Wave, Disco, Funk and Soul. thewesthill.co.uk 38

Sat 9th, Concorde 2 Kemp Town Carnival is one of Brighton’s largest free community street festival and plans for this year includes over four stages of live bands alongside a host of community performances, choirs, theatre, dance troupes and market stalls. Tonight sees a host of bands and DJs including Carnival Collective and Russ Dewbury raising funds for the event which takes place in June. kemptowncarnival.com

Deviant

Modestep

Sat 2nd, Belushis Below The legendary Deviant has been rocking the alternative club scene for nearly ten years and there’s no sign in the behemoth stopping in the immediate future. DJs Andy Lost and Honcho spin a selection of new and classic rock anthems to a packed out crowd. Requests are encouraged and the drinks are ridiculously cheap so what more could you ask for? Party hard people. deviantclub.co.uk

Sat 16th, Concorde 2 Touring relentlessly in the past year the band has been smashing it at festivals all over the world. The Modestep live show is a beast that has ignited crowds from Reading to Sydney, Las Vegas to Moscow. The band has played to one and a half million people in 2012 alone - making Modestep a truly international act, so grab a ticket while you can. modestep.com

Late Night Lingerie Fri 22nd, Sticky Mikes Frog Bar This is a club night with a difference as it worships at the altar of bands instead of DJs. Tonight’s line up includes Skirts, Birdskulls, Ragweed, Atlantic & Lion and Monucure alongside Sub Bop DJs in the bar. Too many gigs finish really early so this is a chance to get to hear some loud guitars in a club environment. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/ stickymikesfrogbar
