futureevents The last 12 months have been kind to Brighton. Amazing gigs, performances, festivals and more throughout the city happening daily, 2012 will have to work hard to top it. Lucky for us then that plenty has been announced for the coming months already. From X-Factor winners and superstar DJs to rock ‘n’ roll and The War On Drugs, there’s more than enough to keep us going in the months ahead. Tom Hasson: future@whatsonguide.co.uk
Omid Djalili Wed 15th Feb 2012, Theatre Royal You’ll probably recognise Omid Djalili from his cameos in films like The Mummy and Sex And The City 2 but it’s as a stand up comedian you’ll remember him for after this show. I caught him live a few years ago and he had me in stitches from start to finish and I’m sure he’ll have the same effect on you. atgtickets.com/brighton
The War On Drugs Wed 29th Feb 2012, Concorde 2 ‘Experimental’ is a word often used to describe The War On Drugs, which will either make you want to buy tickets to the show immediately or make you want to stop reading about them. If you’re the latter, please stay with me – TWOD are a melodic and wonderful band well worth your time. You won’t regret seeing them. concorde2.co.uk
The Duke Spirit Tues 6th March 2012, Komedia The Duke Spirit should be far more well known than they are. Their debut album, Cuts Across The Land, from 2005 was a fantastic blend of 70s rock’n’roll and Creation Recordsstyle indie. Since then, the band have guested on UNKLE’s spectacular 2007 album War Stories and released two more albums of solid rock to critical acclaim. One not to be missed. komedia.co.uk/Brighton 4

futureevents
Wed 28th March 2012, Brighton Dome Despite his album being rather disappointing, I still can’t forget how brilliant Matt Cardle’s version of ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ was. It still makes me smile whenever I watch it online (once a week – for a year). While I can’t guarantee he’ll be singing it in March, I assure you his voice will be just as spectacular. brightondome.org Bombay Bicycle Club Mon 16th April 2012, Brighton Centre Releasing three albums in as many years has pushed Bombay Bicycle Club from playing St. Georges Church to Brighton’s biggest venue in no time at all. The north London band, hailed as one of the UK’s most innovative acts are sure to put on an incredible show that you won’t want to miss out on. They’re that good – possibly better. brightoncentre.co.uk
Fatboy Slim Fri 1st – Sat 2nd June 2012, AMEX Stadium Fatboy Slim’s Big Beach Boutiques have become near-legendary amongst Brighton residents. Instead of a beach-front show, the next BBB will be held at Brighton & Hove Albion’s new home and looks set to be nothing short of spectacular. With support from Carl Cox on day 1 and Nero on day 2, the 5th Big Beach Boutique will be incredible. fatboyslim.net
The Eco Technology Show Fri 15th-Sat 16th of June 2012, AMEX Stadium A brand new event featuring about 200 exhibitors broken up into different areas – Transport, Lifestyle, Energy, Information, Education, Home and Build zones. In addition there will be a Segway track, E-Trike track, Test track for electric bikes, the Electric Bluebird will be there (the fastest electric car in the world) and an Eco Fashion Show. ecotechnologyshow.co.uk

Local restaurants are truly embracing the festive spirit this year, offering great value Christmas dinners throughout December. The Roundhill Tavern 100 Ditchling Road, 01273 683967 This place, a short walk up from the level, is fast becoming my favourite bar/food destination in the city. The warm décor and friendly welcome from the bar staff made us quick to settle and discover the Christmas menu. To start we go for a Ham Hock, home-made bread with a cranberry sauce and an orange and fennel cured salmon with crème fraiche. Our mains appear - slow roasted pheasant, port wine jus, game chips and a stuffing which were made from the birds legs, cream and herbs; really nice touch.
& almond torte with vanilla ice cream. Coffee and mince pies to finish and all washed to down with a delightful Lebanese wine which I rate highly from a strong winelist. 2 Courses @ £19.90 & 3 Courses £24.90. Wine sold separately. Go and discover for yourself.

health&lifestyle Looking for an alternative to hours in the gym. Well I may well of found a strong contender at Healthy Vibes in Hove. Not sure about you but from years of going to the gym, trying this and that activity, I’ve never really known anything to have such an impact on the first session as I found with this concept. All I can say is try it for yourself. Read on. Louise Donno: lifestyle@whatsonguide.co.uk
Healthy Vibes
200 Church Road, Hove 01273 710709
I went to check out Healthy Vibes fitness studio in Hove as I was keen to shift my stubborn ‘mummy tummy’ fat that regular exercise just wasn’t getting rid of. Apart from lipo that entails surgery I thought I’d opt for a combination of Power Pilates and Slim Tech. Sue, the manager of Healthy Vibes explained that these two courses would tighten my abdominals. I was sold when she asked me to feel her stomach; it was like a washboard. A fitness coach takes the Power Pilates classes and you work through the body doing quite simple exercises. The next day I could feel the work I had done on this machine. It’s gentle but very effective at helping tone and improves cellulite. With the Slim Tech machine you put on a rubber skirt that attaches to the machine for the vacuum to work. It sounds more bizarre than it is. Then you begin walking on the machine while the vacuum sucks 24
what’sondec11jan12
on your stomach. It takes getting used to but after a 15 minute stint on this you adapt to the sensation. This is a great fat burner and will guarantee to help you lose literally inches off your waist, providing you also manage a healthy diet and do these sessions regularly. I’d recommend a free trial on both machines to fully experience this as thereafter you can take a course. Check out their website healthyvibesfitness.co.uk

filmclub As we roll into 2012 there is plenty on the celluloid horizon that I’m excited about. As a comic fan I’m looking forward to the new take on ‘Judge Dredd’ in September and the Marvel movie we’ve all been waiting for, ‘The Avengers’ in May. Spiderman is rebooted, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and Daniel Craig returns as James Bond in ‘Skyfall’, the latest addition to my favourite franchise. Can’t wait. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk
Broken Lines On DVD, 5th Dec Jake (Dan Fredenburgh), a newly engaged professional man finds himself, after the sudden death of his father, involved with a café waitress, B (Doraly Rosa) but both of them have built lives for themselves that, although not what they envisioned, come with responsibilities. This intense drama is a total labour of love for the two stars (who also shared writing duties), taking six years from script to screen. Although filmed on a shoestring this is exactly the kind of film that us Brits do best; grim, gritty but full of hope. Paul Bettany, Rita Tushingham and Olivia Williams add a touch of
26
what’sondec11jan12
star power to the proceedings (especially Bettany, who turns in a stunning performance) but this does not take anything away from the two leads. Set in London’s Finsbury Park, this is neither the stylized chic or urban nightmare that we are used to seeing on film, which adds an extra touch of authenticity and makes this an even more refreshing experience. ‘Broken Lines’ is an absorbing, powerful film that has passion running through its veins and bodes well for Sallie Aprahamian who makes her directorial feature film debut here.

In Cinemas, 2nd Dec This prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 horror classic of the same name deals with the discovery of the titular shape-shifting alien. How much of a remake this will be remains to be seen but director Jan Svankmajer promises to stay true to the spirit of the original with minimal CGI but what we really wanted was the long mooted sequel by Carpenter himself.
War Horse In Cinemas, 13th Jan Adapted from the bestselling novel by Michael Morpugo, this tells the tale of a boy who travels to the Flanders trenches in 1915 to rescue his beloved horse. Steven Spielberg directs a cast of top-notch British thesps including David Thewlis, Emily Watson, Peter Mullan and Tom Hiddleston. Already adapted into a successful stage play this looks likely to be a contender come Oscar time.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows In Cinemas, 16th Dec Guy Richie returns to tell another tale of the world’s smartest sleuth. Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law reprise their Holmes and Watson roles and this time around are joined by Noomi Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo). If it romps along with the verve of the first installment then this is one you won’t want to miss.
Underworld: Awakening In Cinemas, 20th Jan After the underwhelming prequel of a few years ago (Evolution), Kate Beckinsale finally squeezes herself back into the iconic PVC catsuit and reprises her role as vampire Selene. Expect lots of slow motion, running, jumping, explosions and gun play (although not necessarily in that order) as the two tribes of vampires and lycans try to survive a human army trying to wipe them out.

barlife It seems like every year I look back over what has been a difficult time for us all, but I am sure you will all agree that this’un has been particularly savage. But rather than throwing in the towel some of the pubs and bars in Brighton have really turned things around and provided a true haven for us in which to forget our woes. These places need to be lauded. Danny Bowman: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk
Chequers 45 Preston Street, 01273 738710 Chequers was my favourite pub in Brighton for many years. It has recently changed hands though and has become one of the best pubs in the whole world. Decorated with Ercol furniture and Farrow & Ballpaint this place feels like home, but better. Breakspear Ales are on tap and warm pies are served. Please will you put the picture of Morrissey back, though.
The Spotted Dog 13 Middle Street, 01273 710444 I gave up drinking for over five months recently and made damned sure that this was the place that I pranced off the wagon at. Why? They have some of the best selection of beers on draught including Delirium Tremens and Boston Lager. They also serve an impressive menu which is reasonably priced at between £8 and £9 a plate.
The Hydrant 75 London Road, 01273 608313 Over the past year this one has picked up the reins of the much missed Engine Rooms and has put on some of the best up and coming acts as well as established oldschool bands. The place is a monument to function, with a big old stage in the main drinking area upstairs as well as a good old fashioned gig hall upstairs. 28

Trafalgar Arches, Lower Goods Yard, 0794 2677053 Another fantastic no-fuss venue and drinking hall. They put on everything from bands, to book launches in the purpose-built function rooms and leaving the wonderfully sparsely decorated bar area for good old solid drinking. Trendy but friendly staff offer a great service. Hang around the terrace and be treated to a veritable who’s who of the Brighton creative community.
Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar 9 -11 Middle Street, 01273 749465 Legend has it that this impossibly named venue is a relocation from New York City no less. Coming from an old punk like myself I have to say this place definitely has a lower east side vibe to it and is reminiscent of a slightly cleaner CBGBs. Happy Hour is from 5-8 each day with pints and G&Ts from £2.40.
The Mesmerist 1-3 Prince Albert Street, 01273 328542 A fabulous and ingeniously decorated drinking parlour with a nineteenth century look and feel. The bar staff here make you think that they have been to school to study their game they are that professional. Downstairs is very large, separated into three areas. Upstairs there’s a drinking area with booths and even more impressively designed with its own bar and serves quality food.
The Great Eastern 103 Trafalgar Street, 01273 685681 Being a pulp fiction novel writer of some renown, I am partial to the occasional stiff bourbon. For medicinal purposes, you understand. The Great Eastern is the place to come if you’re of the same persuasion as they boast the biggest list of whiskeys in Brighton. I recommend the Corn whiskey; it comes in a jar. They also serve Red Stripe on tap.

livemusic Well if the weather outside is frightful, then that’s all the more reason to stick to sweaty venues around our fair city then isn’t it?! Yes, during this festive period of economic instability and probable snowstorms all backed up by a wind cold enough to freeze your bones, warm yourselves with the prospect of a few singing sisters, some aptly-named chillwave, and enough electro to shake a bauble at. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk
Larkin Poe Thurs 1st Dec, Prince Albert It’s no surprise that sisters Rebecca and Megan Lowell are in the music business - they’ve been playing classical violin and piano since the ages of 5 and 6 respectively. They’ve toured with their big sister Jessica as The Lovell Sisters, but now minus a college-bound Jessica, and with a few Knoxville musicians in tow, they’re bringing their beguiling tracks to us. larkinpoe.com
The Staves Mon 5th Dec, The Hope These three sisters have been making music since childhood, and the chemistry certainly does show in their live performances. The three are Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley Taylor, and their astounding three-part harmonies of love and lost longing (after being raised on a diet of The Beatles and Crosby, Stills & Nash) will have you tapping your toes and drying your eyes. myspace.com/thestavesmusic
Post War Years Tues 5th Dec, Green Door Store If you haven’t seen Post War Years yet, then catch these young upstarts from Leamington Spa to see what the fuss is about. Fusing elements of dance, indie longing, jazzy juxtapositions and rockier moments, the band have crafted a sound that belies their years. If you like to ponder while dancing, then Post War Years are just right for you. myspace.com/thempostwaryears 36

Death In Vegas
livemusic
Sun 11th Dec, Concorde 2 Richard Fearless is coming to Brighton after a few identity switches as the beautiful Death In Vegas. After moving from London to New York, and then back to our capital, Fearless has returned to making the deftly-layered distorted contortions of lonely pop that won him a cult following. Just listen to ‘Girls’ if you don’t agree you will once it’s over. deathinvegasmusic.com
Aloe Blacc Fri 16th Dec, Brighton Dome Hailing from LA, Blacc has made a name for himself among critics and fans. Another act to perhaps wisely choose a stage name (his real title is the wonderful Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III), Blacc fuses styles into something original and very catchy. He sings, raps and plays instruments, so if it’s Latin trumpet and impressive lines you’re after, say hello to Aloe. aloeblacc.com
Wolf People Sun 15th Jan, The Haunt Another band to name themselves after an animal you may say; but wait, there’s enough about Wolf People to suggest that they’ve got real bite. With tinges of blues, rock and folk combining in a heady mix, these pups know how to provide a laid-back sound that they love while keeping it relevant. Also signed to Jagjaguwar, so they’re tried and trusted. wolfpeople.co.uk
Explosions In The Sky Sat 28th Jan, Concorde 2 These guys need no introduction, but I’ll be a good sport and give you one anyway. If you like haunting Texan lo-fi rock with orchestral overtones, (or what the band themselves call “cathartic mini-symphonies”) Explosions In The Sky will leave you breathless. The only way to hear them is face to face (or face to guitar), so don’t miss out. explosionsinthesky.com

clublife A club night is not just for Christmas. If you find a really good one over the festive period then you should make it your New Year’s resolution to frequent it again. Just because all the turkey’s been eaten doesn’t mean that all the fun is over. There’s plenty of great club nights that happen weekly or monthly all year round so don’t succumb to the winter blues – get out there. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk
Toro Y Moi Thurs 8th Dec, Coalition Chaz Bundick has been toying with various musical projects since early adolescence. Having spent his formative years playing in punk and indie rock acts, the Toro Y Moi project has been his vessel for further musical exploration incorporating electronics and allowing a wider range of influences—French house, Brian Wilson’s pop, 80s’ R&B, and Stones Throw hip-hop—to show up in his music. toroymoi.blogspot.com
Margot’s Ice Queens & Hot Cossacks Sat 10th Dec, Proud Brighton Ballroom Brighton’s queen of clubs, Margot’s Parties, is creating a Russian themed winter wonderland for its Christmas event. Attendees are encouraged to dress as Russian dolls, ice queens and hot Cossacks and don Faberge colours, peasant prints, and fur trimmed boots for the occasion. Expect cabaret and burlesque performance, as well as DJs playing pop, house and disco tunes. margots.org
Jon Marsh Sat 17th Dec, H Bar, Hove The legend and lead man of Beloved. Will play a special 2 hour set covering the last 10 years of the very best Deep House and Deep Tech House; as the man behind one of the very best Fabric Albums. Amongst the glitter balls and fabulous decor Brighton’s most glamorous clubbers head down to get their fill of the best in House, Urban & Classic Disco. M83 Sun 22nd Jan, Concorde 2 Named after a spiral galaxy, M83, aka French musician Anthony Gonzales, has been blissing out electronica lovers the world over since 2001. Think shoegazing without the barrage of guitars and you won’t be too far off the mark. The new album, ‘Hurry Up We’re Dreaming’ sees the band heading in a more poppy direction but they are no less breathtaking for it. Essential. Ilovem83.com
