eatingout Well I must say I do not normally gravitate to BBQ even on a hot summer’s day don’t know why but just not a massive fan. So when Richard the landlord of the World’s End said to me to come down and have some food I was slightly apprehensive but intrigued as I had heard good reports about the Bar-B-Q Shack. Off I went to London Road for my BBQ experience. Justin Williams: eat@whatsonguide.co.uk

BAR-B-Q Shack

World’s End, 60-61 London Road, 01273 692311 drinkinbrighton.co.uk/worlds-end Now I don’t know if you have been to World’s End if you have not then consider going as the people that run it are very friendly and people ‘make’ places. On this occasion I was kindly invited down By Richard (Landlord) to sample the delights of BBQ dining. He was very enthusiastic which is always a good sign, so I picked up a menu which was precise and informative enough to make my choice of dishes. First things first I order? A shandy; just to wet the whistle and get the show started. Richard recommended the pulled pork. They offer dinner plates which allows you to choose from a selection of meats including a choice of fries and onion rings or rice and beans. Onion rings & fries for me! You can select from one to six types

of meat, I chose pulled pork, quarter chicken, smoked hot link sausage & Mexican style chorizo. That should keep hunger at bay for the next few hours. The pulled pork, which is a North Carolina recipe, was topped with the most amazing sauce and, despite getting messy fingers eating this, it was worth it. The funny thing is I would never have ordered such a dish until today. The quarter chicken was beautifully cooked, the meat fell off the knife and again the sauce was well balanced and flavoursome. The smoked link sausages and Mexican style chorizo just about finished me off. Save buying the throw away BBQ for the beach and head down to Worlds End for a meat fest. Well priced and a positive experience.

Michel Kuipers Tuesday 7th August

Thought we should give you notice about Albion legend Michel Kuipers’ testimonial which will take place on Tuesday 7th August, with Premier League Reading providing the opposition at the Amex. With the Chelsea game the week before the season is looking very exciting. Gus Poyet is likely to field a full-strength side – with Kuipers expected to play a part in the match, alongside the 2012/13 squad. Brian McDermott has also promised to bring a strong Reading side to the Amex, with their Premier League campaign starting eleven days after the testimonial. Kuipers said, “Having been with the Albion as a player for virtually the entire time we were at Withdean, the dream for us all was to get the new stadium. I am proud to have been part of that journey to realise the dream, alongside the fans, and I am delighted to have the chance to play in front of the Albion fans at the Amex. I would like to thank Gus Poyet. The game is an important part of the pre-season build up, so I am grateful that he is giving me the opportunity to play for the club again! Thanks must also go to current chairman Tony Bloom, for granting me the opportunity to play the testimonial at the Amex and also to his predecessor Dick Knight, who was my chairman for most of my time as a player at the club. Finally, a big thank you to my committee, 12

olympics

olympics The Olympics can inspire a lot of emotions; glory, pride, euphoria, pain and that’s just for the people watching! Britain was one of the first countries to host the modern Olympics in 1908. London 2012 will be only the third time in total that we have had the honour. Can we improve on our fourth place ranking in the 2008 Beijing Games? The world will be watching … Gareth Becker: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Art In The Park Think ‘Olympics’ and you may not necessarily think ‘art’ but think again with the London 2012 exhibition, Art in the Park. Built into the grounds of the Olympic park this exhibition will showcase the work of up and coming UK based artists and some old favourites too. Work includes a wildflower meadow planted with wild designs, a floating cinema and a 9 metre glass and steel sculpture called Run.

Olympic Basketball Team UK is targeting medals in the Olympic basketball competition this year. Surprised? Well, perhaps you should be, basketball has traditionally been dominated by the USA. Their team this year includes big name NBA players like Kobe Bryant. In recent years they have come under increased pressure from countries like Spain, Brazil and Argentina. Britain will be looking to its own NBA star Luol Deng to make this tournament a slam dunk.

Park Live Failed in your bid to get one of those elusive Olympic tickets? Get yourself down to the newly created wetland bowl, just north of Olympic Park, during the games, to watch the events on massive screens as they happen! Park Live is designed to hold up to 10,000 people and is sponsored by British Airways who will are supplying over 1000 staff to greet spectators as they arrive. 14

olympics Olympic Swimming

olympics

Rebecca Adlington has been described as the greatest British swimmer for 100 years. Team UK will be hoping that the double Olympic champion will bring home gold again in 2012. Other Team UK hopefuls include Liam Tancock, who is a world champion but has yet to make his impression at Olympic level and Keri-Anne Payne the 10km open water swimmer, double world champion and ’08 Olympic silver medallist.

Archery Team UK narrowly missed out on a medal at the 2008 Olympics. If they can bring home gold this year it’ll be the first time in more than 100 years. Bristolian archer Larry Godfrey has said he’s in the form of his life and fancies his chances of a medal this summer. Meanwhile his teammate in the mixed doubles tournament Amy Oliver ranked first in the World Championship selection earlier in the year.

Zoe Smith She may look like any other 17 year old college student, but appearances can deceive. Zoe Smith will be representing the UK at London 2012 as a weightlifter.  Zoe has been lifting weights since she was twelve years old and achieved number 4 in the country in that same year. She won bronze in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, her first senior championships. She hopes to better it this summer.

Sadaf Rahimi Whether or not she takes home a medal, 17 year-old Sadaf Rahimi will have won many victories simply by competing in the London 2012 games. She is representing her country, Afghanistan, as a boxer. This is the first time that women’s boxing has featured in the Olympic Games.  Females were forbidden from practising sport under the Taliban, and Sadaf’s family have been threatened due to her involvement with boxing. 16

filmclub These days there seems to be as many classic films in cinemas as new ones and this month is no exception. Total Recall (6th), Chariots of Fire and Cocktail (13th) return for a showing on the big screen and if you’re after a good music documentary then look no further than Ice T and Andy Baybutt’s ‘Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap’ (20th) tracing the roots of hip hop. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk

Exit Humanity On DVD Mon 2nd Set a decade after the American Civil War, ‘Exit Humanity’ tells the tale of Edward Young (Mark Gibson) as he battles his way through an unexplained zombie outbreak. After finding that his wife has been infected he sets off on a journey to find his missing son, recording his experiences in a journal along the way. Although made on a shoestring, all credit to writer/director John Geddes and cinematographer Brendan Uegama for producing such a great looking film. Animated segments add a comic book sensibility (as well as some budget saving) and a top notch

score ramps up the atmosphere. Mark Gibson’s performance as a man trying to make sense of the carnage surrounding him is totally believable and genre stalwarts Dee Wallace, Stephen McHattie and Bill Moseley add a certain gravitas to the proceedings, as does Brian Cox who narrates the tale in Young’s own words. ‘Exit Humanity’ is an original take on a well worn genre and has obviously been made with a great deal of love so is well worth two hours of your time even if zombies aren’t your bag.

The Amazing Spider-Man

filmclub

In Cinemas Tues 3rd Even though it’s only a mere five years since Sam Raimi’s franchise killing ‘Spider-Man 3’ this new reboot is a very welcome addition in a great year for super hero films. This time around Andrew Garfield plays Peter Parker with Rhys Ifans as the Lizard and it’s looking like we’re getting a more wise-cracking, comic accurate portrayal of everyone’s favourite friendly neighbourhood wall crawler.

Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World In Cinemas Fri 13th Romantic comedy and the apocalypse are words that don’t sit well together so writer and director Lorene Scarafaria may have created a brand new genre. As a world threatening meteor hurtles towards the earth, Dodge (Steve Carell) takes a road trip to reunite with his high school sweetheart and takes his neighbour (Keira Knightley) along for the ride.

Ice Age 4: Continental Drift In Cinemas Fri 13th Yet another outing for your favourite prehistoric pals Manny, Diego and Sid. This time around they encounter sea creatures and battle pirates from an iceberg after their continent is set adrift. Ray Romano, Denis Leary, Peter Dinklage, Nick Frost, Jennifer Lopez and John Leguizamo are amongst the voices and, as if you really needed to ask, it comes in wallet busting 3D.

The Dark Knight Rises In Cinemas Fri 20th The third and final instalment in Christopher Nolan’s fantastic Batman trilogy sees Christian Bale returning to face off against Tom Hardy’s Bane. As comic fans will know, this didn’t exactly go well for the caped crusader so it will be interesting to see whether Nolan bottles out. With plenty of returning faces and Catwoman to boot this could be the best one yet.

barlife Open mic pub events are a great way of spotting up and coming artists whilst having a great night out with your mates. It’s a really intimate way of seeing performers at close quarters and certainly puts them on their mettle as there’s nowhere to hide. Most open mic nights are acoustic so your hearing isn’t under threat of ending up dodgy like mine after many years in the music industry! Kairen Kemp: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk

The Victory 6 Duke Street, Thursdays 8.30pm Taking place in the upstairs area means the music does not have to compete with the hustle and bustle of a busy bar, in this respect it’s a pretty unique. They pride themselves on being Brighton’s friendliest Open Mic giving any and all performers a warm reception. They’ve a PA and offer drinks promotions to all performers. 01273 326555 victory@drinkinbrighton.co.uk

The Marlborough 4 Princes Street, Wednesdays 8.30pm Well established regular night at this one of Brighton’s oldest public houses, takes over the place and really adds to the bustling vibe. Lots of surprises and genuine support from the regulars makes it one for both the performer and audience. Performers get happy hour prices all night so its worth getting up just for that alone. 01273 570028 marlborough@drinkinbrighton.co.uk

Thomas Kemp 8 St Georges Road, Wednesdays 8.30pm Kev and Jenna host this weekly Open Mic set in the heart of the Thomas Kemp and well loved by regulars and ‘msos’ alike. They look after performers with a free pint and obviously its free entry. With a nice sounding PA and good vibes, its a great way of spending an evening. 01273 683334 kemp@drinkinbrighton.co.uk 32

livemusic Well, how was your June? Blistering heat followed by torrents of rain seemed to be the order of things, so the only sane refuge surely should have been my gig recommendations. No?!? Well, here’s your chance to make it up to me. We have a true variety of performers heading here in July, so if contemplative socialism, riotous rock, or ethereal electro sound vaguely tempting, get on down here. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

Otis Gibbs Wed 4th, Prince Albert If songs of life’s struggles are your kind of thing, then Otis Gibbs has plenty of them. His socialist ideals are apparent in his lyrics, drawing comparisons with Woody Guthrie and Bruce Springsteen, although his bushy beard is very much his own. A beautiful guitar player with a raspy voice you can’t help but listen to, his lyrics are honest and original. otisgibbs.com

Hot 8 Brass Band Sat 7th, Coalition If you’d like a little bit of brass on a Saturday night (not that kind of brass, you filthy people) then the Hot 8 Brass Band are the perfect pick. Infectious melodies, soulful rhythms and music as a celebration of life make it impossible not to love these guys. Check out their cover of Sexual Healing online and I’ll see you there! hot8brassband.com

Burn The Fleet Sun 8th, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar The wonderfully-named Burn The Fleet are four guys from Southampton who, apart from having a pyromaniacal desire to punish barges, also know how to write a catchy song. Sticky Mike’s is the perfect setting for their heavy melodic brand of rock and, as on track River Song, their blend of technical skill and soaring choruses will stir your soul. myspace.com/burnthefleetband 40

livemusic

Wed 11th, The Haunt On the basis of their success while still unsigned with album The Holiday, you’ll be hearing much more of this Buckinghamshire four piece in future. After leaving Mercury Records due to frustrations over release dates, the alt-rockers are determined to turn heads once more, and if the infectious ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ is anything to go by, they’re going to be stars. myspace.com/futures

Black Stone Cherry Thurs 12th, Concorde 2 Usually I would snootily raise an eyebrow at a band that’s toured with Nickelback, but having seen these hardworking rockers live, it’s almost impossible to not get swept up into their big bowl of fun. If you like your hard rock to rock and rock hard, then Kentuckians Black Stone Cherry will blow the roof off of Concorde 2 into the sea. blackstonecherry.com

The Post War Years Thurs 19th, The Hope Leamington Spa lads The Post War Years are back on tour, and if you haven’t seen their unique sound before, then you need to get yourself there. Great vocals, interesting rhythms, emotional electro and hooks that just don’t leave you are the order of the day and when I saw them they used two basses; as a bassist, that is good news. postwaryears.com

Frankie Rose Fri 27th, Green Door Store After being a member of great garage rock acts Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls and the Vivian Girls, Frankie Rose is bringing her own material to town. Rose earned a ‘best new music’ designation for second album Interstellar from Pitchfork this year, and there’s definitely something special about her. The title track is ethereal, enigmatic and pulsating, so don’t miss an astounding performance. missfrankierose.com

clublife It’s always a pleasure to announce a new night so if you are of the rock persuasion then look no further than this from legendary man about town Peter Von Sleaze. Lick It Up takes place at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar on Saturday 21st. There’s the promise of live music from two bands including Headface, burlesque from Zizi Lane and DJs playing a selection of Metal, Thrash, Glam and Rock. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

Dub Pistols Fri 6th, Concorde 2 Founded in 1996 in London, The Dub Pistols unleashed an infectious mix of dub, big beat, ska and hip hop with their debut album “Point Blank’. Fast forward to 2012, and the band have won the coveted DJ Mag’s ‘Best Live Act 2011’ award, are about to release their fifth album and get back on the road to do what they do best. dubpistolsmusic.co.uk

The British Invasion Sat 7th, Komedia As much as we fail as a nation at most things there’s one particular thing that we tend to get right and that’s music. ‘The British Invasion’ is a new club night that celebrates just that. DJ Jody Lee Hooker will be playing tunes that encompass everything that makes us great at what we do. It’s a tall order, as the playlist is potentially huge, but expect anything from Dusty Springfield to Dizzee Rascal. Facebook: britishinvasionkomedia

Phantasy With Erol Alkan Sat 14th, Digital Erol Alkan started as an Indie DJ at his club night, Trash, hosting early performances by LCD Soundsystem and Bloc Party. He started to play regular sets outside Trash but chose to focus on dance music, influenced by his sets at Bugged Out. He is also a prolific remixer and produced albums by Mystery Jets, Late of the Pier and Long Blondes. erolalkan.co.uk 48

Steve KIW Meets Soul Buggin’ Sat 21st, Fishbowl Steve KIW has been spinning tunes for quite a while with occasional spots with Go Bang, Headroom, Stone To The Bone and Norman Jay’s Good Times Sound System. Expect a healthy double dose of Disco, Soul, Jazz and House. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/fishbowl
