futureevents When I first started writing these pages it was easy. There’s so much happening in Brighton that I only needed a few minutes to choose which events to cover. Now though, it’s getting increasingly tough. At Komedia alone there are so many events that just choosing one was pretty tough. But I’ve tried my best and picked some pretty fantastic shows coming up, from comedy and theatre to hip-hop and rock. Tom Hasson: future@whatsonguide.co.uk
Clock Opera Sun 29th April, Green Door Store Clock Opera have been doing the live circuit for some time now and come April, their debut album will finally be released. For the £6 you’ll pay for this gig, I can assure it’s more than worth checking them and their soaring electro-pop out at the Green Door Store. I’ll be surprised if they ever play a venue this small again. thegreendoorstore.co.uk
Stewart Lee Wed 2nd May, Brighton Dome Following on from his critically acclaimed Comedy Vehicle television series, Lee returns to the stage with his new show, Carpet Remnant World, to look at a middle-aged life of sex (or lack of it), marriage and watching cartoons with his son. If his new show is anything like his TV show, or even his Observer column, it’ll be a great night out. brightondome.org
Isy Suttie, Sun 20th May, Komedia You may recognise her as Dobby from Peep Show, or Kiki from Whites but if you don’t recognise her at all, where have you been? The award winning Isy Suttie is hilarious, and her new one-woman show only further proves this. Telling the story of Isy’s part in a blossoming internet romance, the show is both laugh out loud funny & genuinely touching. komedia.co.uk/Brighton 4

Bette & Joan

Mon 28th May - Sat 2nd June, Theatre Royal Two Hollywood legends, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, had an equally legendary rivalry. A feud that stretched over 30 years reached its climax as they filmed the classic Whatever Happened To Baby Jane. Anita Dobson and Greta Scacchi take on the roles of the battling stars, vividly portraying the highs, lows, tantrums and all to spectacular effect. atgtickets.com/venue
Bob Geldof Thurs 31st May, Concorde2 Bob Geldof has released a new studio album ‘How To Compose Popular Songs That Will Sell’, and will be performing live tracks from the album and hits of The Boomtown Rats with a full live band. Brighton Japan Festival Sat 23rd June-Sun 1st July An eight day festival celebrating Japan and its wonderful culture. Brighton Japan’s ambition is to “offer an exciting platform for Japan-related arts, technology, design and business to inspire, excite, and enrich”. Featuring everything from Japanese music and manga, through to street processions, costume competitions and of course, food. The eight-day festival is sure to be fantastic, I can’t wait! brightonjapan.com
Rizzle Kicks Fri 7th Dec, Brighton Centre Having sold out their two shows at Concorde 2 this month well in advance, as well as their April gig at the Brighton Dome, Rizzle Kicks have already been booked into the city’s biggest venue: The Brighton Centre. marchfocus When emerging from winter hibernation most creatures think only about sustenance, everything else is secondary. With this in mind I’ve included a small selection of food and drink related events, although I wouldn’t suggest restricting yourself to an intake of just wine and cheese this month, however tasty that would be. There’s also plenty elsewhere to entertain, that is to say unless you’re still suffering from an overindulgence post-Beer Festival. Greg Furlong: focus@whatsonguide.co.uk
Welsh Cheese & Trealy Farm Charcuterire Tasting Thu 1st, La Cave à Fromage Celebrate St David’s Day by sampling some of Wales’ most well known cheeses with a selection of awardwinning Charcuterie from Trealy Farm in Monmouthshire. Situated on Western Road, between Brunswick Terrace and Palmeira Square, La Cave à Fromage is a wonderful little cheese shop offering the very best of French and British cheeses. Well worth exploring anytime. la-cave.co.uk
Circus of Horrors
Sun 4th, Theatre Royal The jaw-dropping show that rocked Britain’s Got Talent rolls into town, transporting the Theatre Royal back to 1920s’ Berlin for Dr. Haze’s dazzling Vampire Vaudeville show. The cast of twisted contortionists, hair hanging beauties, demon dwarfs, sword swallowers and its latest star: The Ventriloquist, will send shivers down your spine with some of the most bizarre and beautiful circus acts on earth. atgtickets.com/venue/TheatreRoyal-Brighton
Sussex Beer Festival 2012 Thu 8th - Sat 10th, Hove Town Hall Following last year’s huge success, the good people organising the 2012 Sussex Beer & Cider Festival have promised more beer than ever before! Good news, but means you’ll need to get there early and pace yourself if you fancy trying them all. Saturday evening’s entertainment comes from Brighton five piece The Common Tongues to add to the jollity. sussexbeerfestival.co.uk 6

The Selecter Sun 25th, Concorde 2 With The Specials, Madness and The Beat already back and playing festivals, it was only a matter of time (we hoped!) before 2-tone’s iconic queen Pauline Black reunited with her partner in ska, the stylish Gaps ‘De Killa’ Hendrickson. CanTina Supper Club Secret Location, email:contactcantina@gmail.com Set in a fantastic regency location in Hove I was greeted by the bubbly hostess and chef Tina. Cosmopolitan to start, I knew from that moment on the evening would go well... BYO drinks policy and a 7 course menu at £35 per head is good value. I can honestly say I loved every dish Tina prepared. I particularly got stuck into the Braised Beef with Chorizo as the meat was tender. Tina is passionate about food. A very attentive waitress waited on 16 guests and a very French looking accordion player
Coast To Coast Brighton Marina, 01273 626170 Recently opened, it is best described as a gastronomic adventure across America with a great selection of all US favourites from East to West coast. It delivers really good food and service. My Chicken Fajita was superb! The chicken breast was perfectly cooked. My partner ate the restaurant’s signature dish; the 28day aged Casterbridge Steak. It reminded me of the steaks in Buenos Aires. .c2crestaurants.com 8

Kinesiology www.leisabrown.co.uk • 01273 694920 • info@leisabrown.co.uk To stay healthy we need blood, lymph and energy (chi) flowing efficiently around our bodies. If any of the systems that carry supplies of these are not working properly, the body begins to go out of balance and we feel out of sorts. If the imbalance is allowed to continue, it will, over time, lead to illness and disease (physical and/or emotional). During a Kinesiology treatment, skilled muscle testing is used to find imbalances within the body and its organs, and energy systems (such as acupuncture meridians, chakras, etc). The practitioner also looks for the cause of the imbalance - for example, toxic substances, nutritional deficiencies, dehydration, suppressed emotions. They then use techniques to clear any blocked energies and stimulate the flow of blood, lymph and energy to all organs, rebalancing the whole body and energy systems. Muscles switch back on and the body begins to realign itself, often resolving chronic back problems as the spine and pelvis are now held properly in their
natural balanced position. During a session, each client will also be taught powerful techniques to help them maintain balance and good health, and advised about anything that would help their body to heal more quickly, such as nutritional or herbal supplements, flower essences or certain exercises. As the whole person is treated holistically, Kinesiology can help almost anything. Some of the most common problems seen by practitioners are: IBS/digestive problems, hormonal problems, allergies, food intolerances, immune disorders, skin problems, back pain, headaches and migraines, emotional problems, depression, low energy, chronic fatigue, stress, anxiety and phobias.

Hedda Gabler Tues 6th – Sat 10th, ` Brighton Little Theatre Anyone who’s seen an episode of Inspector Morse knows that academic jealousies can get wildly out of hand and so it is in Ibsen’s most famous play. Recently married to Jorgen Tesman, who aspires to a scholastic greatness we suspect he will never attain, Hedda’s life is thrown into chaos when her husband’s intellectual rival Ejlert Lovberg arrives in town. the-little.co.uk

filmclub Getting a limited release on the 2nd is ‘Blank City’, a documentary that charts the wave of experimental film making that occurred in New York at the end of the seventies. Directed by Celine Danhier and with contributions from Debbie Harry, Jim Jarmusch, Fab Five Freddy, John Waters, Steve Buscemi and Thurston Moore, this promises to be a fascinating insight into how the DIY ethic crossed over from music to movies. Resistance On Blu Ray & DVD, 19th In an alternate time line, it is 1944, D Day has failed and Britain is under Nazi occupation. Sarah Lewis (Andrea Riseborough), a 26-year-old farmer’s wife, awakes one morning to find that her husband has disappeared along with all the men in the valley. Assuming they have joined the Resistance, the women of this tiny community pull together, taking on the running of the farms, and wait, desperate for news. A German patrol arrives in the valley, the purpose of its mission a mystery. When a severe winter forces the two groups into co-operation, Sarah begins an acquaintance with the patrol’s commanding officer, Albrecht (Tom Wlaschiha). Cut off from

the surrounding war, the lines between collaboration, duty, occupation and survival become blurred. Based on the critically acclaimed novel by Owen Shears and with a script co written with director Amit Gupta, ‘Resistance’ is a subtle, underplayed film that deals realistically with a fascinating scenario. It’s pretty bleak stuff but the fact that Michael Sheen took such a small part reflects the quality of the material. The cinematography brings the Welsh countryside vividly to life and all of the performances are flawless but the film definitely belongs to Riseborough, last seen as Wallace Simpson in ‘W.E’, who shines through, proving a talent that’s worth keeping a close eye on.

John Carter In Cinemas, 9th Based on the series of novels by Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs, Disney hopes this will be the first film in a new franchise. Civil War vet Carter (Taylor Kitsch) is transported to a Mars populated by twelve foot tall barbarians and encounters a princess (Lynn Collins) in need of a saviour. Footage released so far is looking like the Star Wars prequels meet Stargate.
21 Jump Street In Cinemas, 16th Based on the TV series that first announced the arrival of Johnny Depp on to the world’s stage, this update sees two underachieving cops (Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum) sent back to a local high school to infiltrate and bring down a drugs ring. With Ice Cube as their commanding officer, think Beverley Hills 20210 meets Miami Vice and you won’t go far wrong.
The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists In Cinemas, 28th This 3D animated romp sees a pirate captain setting out on a mission to defeat his rivals for the Pirate of the year award. With a voice cast that includes Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek, Lenny Henry, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton and, naturally, Brian Blessed, this should be great fun for the kids whilst shivering the parents’ timbers too.

barlife South of the Laines and north of the waterfront lies a pipeline of booze dens. In the thoroughfares of East Street, Middle Street and West Street lies the powerful heart of Brighton’s drinking scene. It is fitting that down these roads was once the old town; the original location of Brighton itself before it expanded up to where the Dome is now, and beyond in the modern age. These pubs are ambassadors for this Town. Danny Bowman: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk
The Fish Bowl 74 East Street, 01273 777505 What more could you want? Great atmosphere, Big name DJs five nights a week as well as live music nights. A recent development is in their food department where they offer many variations on the old fish & chips classic including lemon & cracked black pepper batter, chilli & lime and a choice with an Indian twist to name but a few.
Smugglers 10 Ship Street, 01273 328439 Long established as a sports bar, showing the latest games and offering a row of pool tables, but has been branching out into the music business, big time. The main bar is still sports heavy but you have The Loft upstairs (available for private hire) and the legendary Jazz Rooms in the basement. Serves food including the old fish finger sandwich and bacon skins.
Northern Lights 6 Little East Street, 01273 747096 A proper original concept it being a Scandinavian themed restaurant in the heart of Brighton complete with antique ski equipment adorning the walls. They offer a menu full of exciting, traditional Nordic delicacies to sample and stock more kinds of vodka than I knew existed. They also boast beer from Lapland, Aquavit, and organic and vegan wines. They can cater form large parties. 22

The Spotted Dog 13 Middle Street, 01273 710444 Quickly becoming the place to drink in Brighton. It would be impossible to list all the amazing drinks they do on tap but I will say they offer the delicious Boston Lager and extra potent Delirium Tremens (which you’re only allowed to order by the half pint). Has the same high quality of food it did when it was the Hop Poles.
Fiddler’s Elbow 11-12 Boyces Street, 01273 325850 Legend has it that you will get the best and cheapest pint of Guinness in the city served here. The also offer the wide range of Irish whiskeys to rival the Great Eastern’s bourbon list. Live music is to be had three nights a week, including the Fiddler’s Open Mic Night, Sunday evenings from 8pm. Also offers and award winning Sunday Roast.

livemusic After I foolishly suggested that February would be a warmer month than January, I might as well not even bother making a prediction for March – but I think the safe money is on flash floods and meteorites at this rate. Regardless of the perils faced from on high, March should be a cracking month for live music, with hometown heroes, moody upstarts and brooding folk to whet your whiskey whistle. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk
Rachel Sermanni Thurs 1st, Latest Music Bar After being mentored by folk royalty Mumford & Sons, big things are expected of Sermanni, whose smoky vocals belie her 19 years (yes, she really is only 19!). Earning rave reviews in The Mirror and The Sun shows that the Scot is well on her way to becoming the next big thing in folk, so check her out on the way up. achelsermanni.net
Jamie N Commons Fri 2nd, Prince Albert Now then, while he may sound he’s singing from the bottom of a whisky bottle buried in the desert, Jamie N Commons actually originates from Bristol. The BBC Sound of 2012 tip emigrated to America before coming back and bedding down in New Cross and, if ‘The Preacher’ is a sign of things to come, the 22-year-old will be a blues star. jamiencommons.com

Thurs 8th, Concorde 2 While Labrinth featured on Tinie Tempah’s massive hits ‘Pass Out’ and ‘Frisky’, it’s perhaps more impressive that he also produced them. The precocious young performer has copious musical talent to go with his charismatic live performances, and after a successful summer on the festival circuit, the Hackney rapper will be hoping that Tinie’s levels of stardom follow – otherwise he may get in a …Tempah. labrinth.tumblr.com 30

Fri 9th, Dome The home town boys have done good – yes, The Maccabees return to town for a show that is sure to be akin to a victory lap after the critical and commercial success of their latest record ‘Given to the Wild’. With a more textured approach than ever before, the four-piece are becoming major players, so get down to crown the new indie kings. themaccabees.co.uk
Deaf Club Fri 9th, The Hope Following extremely positive writeups in The Guardian (amongst others), Deaf Club are certainly ones to watch out for in the coming months. With a sound that carries echoes of The Cure’s earlier gothic numbers, coupled with (lead singer’s) standout voice, the Welsh five-piece offer introspection along with riffs you can really sink your teeth into; check out heady track ‘Sunday For A Taste’. deafclub.bandcamp.com
Ben l’Oncle Soul Sun 11th, Dome Chances are by now that you’ve heard a tidy soul version of the White Stripe’s Seven Nation Army over the airwaves, and if so, then you’ve heard Ben l’Oncle. The French arena artist has just played London Jazz Festival, getting a fantastic reception while he was there and, with a Jools Holland appearance under his belt, the impressively-dressed gentleman comes highly recommended. benlonclesoul.com
Roberto Fonseca Thurs 29th, Dome If you like your evenings full of flavor and the occasional Cuban quickstep, then look no further than the wonderful Roberto Fonseca. The Buena Vista Social Club/Havana Cultura star combines the stylish, sultry history of Cuban rhythms with contemporary lyrics and electronic beats to give the old styles a lick of new paint, so you and your heels have the best of both worlds. robertofonseca.com/en

clublife Since the introduction of extended drinking hours, pubs seem to have become the new clubs. There are lots of interesting nights covering a wide range of musical styles happening in bars all over the city. Check out the Mucky Duck, Caroline of Brunswick, the Thomas Kemp, St James Tavern, the Globe, the Duke of Norfolk, the Bees Mouth and Northern Lights for starters but there are many more to discover. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk
Portico Quartet Thurs 1st, Komedia Portico Quartet still sound like nothing you’ve ever heard before. The Mercury nominated East London based outfit’s unique music has expanded to embrace new sonic territories. Drawing on the inspiration of electronica, ambient, classical and dance music as they take their strange, beautiful, cinematic, future music to exciting new areas. Their third album is the sound of a band that refuses to stand still. komedia.co.uk
Aquasky & The Ragga Twins Sat 3rd, The Volks After many collaborations such as the dance floor bombs ‘Put Your Hands Up’ and ‘Living Legends’, Aquasky and the Ragga Twins are back to perform together for this special all nighter and bring you a taste of their new album ‘Raise the Devil’. Support comes from local Brighton talent and Playboy’s residents Dirtbomb, Moai, Arthur Shilling and many more. aquasky.co.uk
Pussycat Club: Live & Unleashed Sat 3rd, Digital The Pussycat Club is Brighton’s longest running club night so that tells you they’re doing something right. Their latest venture sees DJs Man on the Edge and Future Heroes playing cutting edge club tracks backed by live musicians and sampling. Alongside this there are a plethora of club performers on rotation including trapeze artists, illusionists, gymnasts and flame throwing spark shows.pussycatevents.com 36

clublife
Sat 10th, Concorde 2 Gilles Peterson has been flooding the airwaves with his worldwide beats since 1998 but was spinning tunes way before Radio One took him to the masses. Founder of the Acid Jazz and Talkin’ Loud record labels he continues to be a breath of fresh air on the dance floors of the world with his unique selection of music that is rarely heard elsewhere. concorde2.co.uk
From The Grave Sat 17th, Caroline of Brunswick There seems to be a glut of Rockabilly, Surf and Rock N Roll nights but none devoted to the hugely popular Psychobilly movement. DJ Greg Gore aims to change all of that when he spins a fiendish selection of tunes from The Cramps, The Meteors and the Frantic Flintstones whilst also catering for the Horrorpunk massive with the Misfits and Blitzkid. carolineofbrunswick.co.uk
Mod For It Sat 24th, Komedia A night of far-out tunes from the Mod scene of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Expect a cool mix of Northern soul, Stax & Motown, ska, R&B, British invasion, 60s’ Garage, New Wave and Two Tone from the resident DJ Jody Lee-hooker. This night has been shakin’ peoples’ tail feathers in Brighton since 2006 and has now found a new home at Komedia. facebook.com/groups/modforit
Matrix Presents: Back In The Day Sat 31st, H Bar Kenny Ken started DJing in 1989, inspired by the early warehouse parties. He worked on London Underground FM, and latterly Dance FM.His record labels include Mix ‘n’ Blen & Planet Funk Recordings and he has also DJ’d for Radio 1 & had his own show on Kiss FM. Catch him as the legend returns to the H Bar for a special one off performance. h-bar-hove.com
