ourcity Brighton & Hove has seen an impressive reduction in the number of 16-18 year olds who are not in education, employment or training. On average over the last three months, only 6.7% of young people have fallen into this category. This is the lowest proportion since records began in 2002. Much of the progress in this area is due to the ongoing work of the council’s Youth Employability Service (YES). Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George
Young People’s Prospects Are On The Up In just over a year the YES service has helped 463 young people find education, employment or training, and many others with other aspects of their careers. Most young people are assigned a YES Adviser who helps them with CV writing, job search, application forms and interview skills. They can also support young people with advice, access to facilities and help them apply for college, apprenticeships and other training opportunities. The service is easy to contact – there’s a popular Facebook page, Youtube channel, a monthly bulletin, and drop-in sessions across the city throughout the week. The team are also currently working with the young people’s Youth Employability Panel to develop a mobile phone app so that young people can keep in touch on the move. Our approach has been used as a good example on a national level to show other councils how setting up a specialised local service is the best way to reduce the number of young people out of work, education or training. 4
what’sonmarch13
The Youth Employability Service now plans to increase support to even more young people and is looking to work closely with the YMCA, housing associations, family services, and family nurses. Young people are having a particularly hard time during this economic crisis, so it’s fantastic news that the figures for those in Brighton & Hove not in education, employment or training has dropped – and a tribute to the work of the Youth Employability team.

So if the 31st of March seems too far away, dry those tears and get yourself to one of these events! Andrew Kilpatrick: culture@whatsonguide.co.uk

filmclub As a life long fan of all things horror, one release that has piqued my interest this month is ‘Maniac’ (In Cinemas, 15th ) which tells the story of a serial killer from the perspective of the perpetrator. Elijah Wood plays the lead and for those who think he’s too fluffy to be convincing, I urge you to check out his role in Frank Miller’s superb ‘Sin City’ as proof. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk
Safe Haven 1st, In Cinemas A young woman (Julianne Hough) with a dark secret arrives in the idyllic sleepy town of Southport, North Carolina and forms a bond with a widower (Josh Duhamel) and his children in this romantic thriller from director Lasse Hallstrom. This is the man who directed both ‘ABBA: The Movie’ and ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’, so it comes as no surprise that the film is not all that it initially appears. Romantic films only work if you can empathise with the characters and, thankfully, the two leads are extremely likeable, which makes for a more absorbing time (although I did spend most of the second half trying to remember the name of the Julia Roberts film that ‘Safe Haven’ suddenly becomes).

Apparently the tone is lighter than the Nicholas Sparks novel it is based on, which is only to be expected, but this is a film that really surprised me. From the marketing campaign I was expecting standard chick flick fare but, although there are elements of this, it is a well crafted and engaging film that contains an ending so unexpected and mind boggling that it will make repeated viewing a completely different experience. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy ‘Safe Haven’ quite as much as I did but can’t help thinking that the marketing men may have made a mistake by excluding a big chunk of this films potential audience.

1st, In Cinemas Two of Hollywood’s heavy hitters head up this tale of corruption at the highest level. Mark Wahlberg plays ex cop Billy Taggart who is seeking revenge after being double crossed and then framed by Mayor Hostetler (Russell Crowe). This is directed by Allen Hughes who, along with his brother Albert, brought us ‘Menace II Society’, but will this be as gritty as it initially promises?
OZ The Great & Powerful 8th, In Cinemas Is nothing sacred in the world of prequels? The latest from director Sam Raimi gives us the low down on how the wonderful Wizard of Oz came to be. James Franco, fresh from carving himself up in ‘127 Hours’ plays Oz alongside Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis. We may not be in Kansas anymore but those flying monkeys look terrifying, as ever.
Robot & Frank 8th, In Cinemas Set in the near future, an ex jewel thief, Frank (Frank Langella), receives a robot butler from his son. It’s not long though before the robot becomes an accomplice as Frank gets back to his criminal ways. From the trailer this looks absolutely fantastic. Langella is always watchable and the film seems like its going to be an extremely heartfelt and very entertaining watch.
John Dies At The End 22nd, In Cinemas This one has ‘cult classic’ written all over it. Based on the novel by David Wong (who also co-writes the screenplay), this is about a new street drug that sends its users across time and space but some people return no longer human. Don Coscarelli, the man who brought you ‘Bubba Ho Tep’ and ‘Phantasm’ directs and I, for one, can’t wait.

livemusic Well I hope you all enjoyed seeing some of last month’s selections - I caught The Bronx at Concorde 2, and I’m hooked on coastal punk now. There’s more treats in store for March, with things perhaps moving a little more freely in the warmer weather. It’s time to put away the wellies and shovels and crack out the cocktail umbrellas and dancing shoes - it’s going to be a good month. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk
San Cisco Tues 5th, Green Door Store These Australian upstarts at first seem to tread the well-worn indie poppet route we all know all too blandly but they have something about them which begs further listens. ‘Awkward’ displays the deft interplay of vocals between Jordi Davieson and drummer Scarlett Stevens, while Rocket Ship is an infectious singalong of joy. Catch them before every cool kid knows their name. Facebook: sanciscomusic
The Pretty Things Wed 6th, Komedia The Pretty Things have been around since 1962, so their show should be tight as a bow tie on a beluga. They’ve been exploring the corners of psychedelic, r’n’b and rock since Dick Taylor left the Rolling Stones (who?) and formed his own band. While The Stones aren’t to be sniffed at, The Pretty Things have gone their own way - and sound great. theprettythings.net
Stiff Little Fingers Fri 8th, Concorde 2 And now for some proper punk rock from Belfast no less. Stiff Little Fingers are legends on the circuit and with Jake Burns screaming his way through decades of no-nonsense, high-octane anger rock , anything seems possible on a gig night with these guys. They’re still going strong after a fair few years on stage so you’ve got absolutely no excuses. slf.com/homebase.cfm 32

The DB Band Fri 15th, Prince Albert With Mick Quinn (Supergrass) and Paul Wilson (Shake Appeal) combining for some dreamy, smoky rock, I suggest you don your sunglasses and head to the Albert for a sweaty ho-down. Chapel Club Wed 27th, The Haunt If you’re a fan of Hot Chip or similarly thoughtful electro goodness, then you could do a lot worse than getting yourself to the London-formed five piece’s show. ‘Good Together’ is an astoundingly lovely number which shows of Lewis Bowman’s distinctive vocals playing on love, loss and life. clublife
clublife One of the great things about Brighton is that you can find a club night in the most unlikely of places. Al Duomo is an Italian restaurant with a great basement that is ideal for parties and Rebel Rabble will be hosting a free one on the first of the month. DJs Al Marzocchi. Matt Slackers, David Ethics and guests will be spinning a selection of House and Techno treats. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk
Club Kovak with Youth Sat 2nd, Blind Tiger Acclaimed record producer Youth, whose exemplary credentials include the likes of The Verve, U2 and The Orb, will make a special appearance on the decks. He is also one of the founding members of Killing Joke. This night of live music and DJ performance will feature the long-awaited return of KOVAK, the electronic-pop/rock outfit and one of Brighton’s most acclaimed acts. kovak.co.uk
Tache Club Sat 9th, Coalition This is a new night dedicated to all things bristly and twirly. The music is guaranteed to be dirty and you can get advice on facials and grooming. A group of Tachettes will be on hand to apply taches if you are of a pre-pubescent nature or they can get the felt tip out. It’s a strict tache only policy and definitely no goatees. Facebook: tacheclub
Back In The Day Sat 9th, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar After the success of their first event, The Department of Jaded Memories presents another eclectic mix of the best classic Acid and House music from the late eighties and early nineties with DJ Coops, A Man Like Benny and Little Bear all playing old school classics that will appeal to the all. Whistles and Glow Sticks at the ready. Facebook: departmentofjadedmemories 38

Electric Playboys Featuring Featurecast
clublife
Sat 9th, Volks Featurecast is the don of the ghetto funk / nufunk scene and has been smashing dancefloors around the world with his ace party mash ups. With some highly sort after bootlegs and his acclaimed album ‘Run For Cover’ he now brings his custom party starter madness down to the Electric Playboys night. volksclub.co.uk
Reverb Bistro Fri 15th, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Reverb Bistro smashes off again with riddems that are punchy, natty and jungle influenced. Sticking with the rustic and roughneck themes, they’re bringing the rave down to the basement so bring your earplugs. Expect Dubconcious Orchestra, Falla, Original Pearls, Relapse and C3B & Thrackh to thrash up the dance floor. They’ve also promised a very special guest so get there early. soundcloud.com/rugga-and-rusta
Electro Sleaze Sat 16th, Jamaica Inn at The Rosehill Tavern After the unbridled success of the first night, DJ Peter Von Sleaze returns with his trademark sounds for a night of booze, boobs and beats. Expect eclectic Balkan Gypsy beats, Electro Swing, Burlesque treats, Vegas Grind, some TV themes and a sprinkling of Ska and Rock N Roll. So dust off your best suits and frocks and get sleazy. jamaicainnhove.co.uk
Dragonette
Fri 29th, Coalition Formed by singer/songwriter Martina Sorbara and her husband, bassist Dan Kurtz, Canadian electro-poppers Dragonette have drawn comparisons to the Scissor Sisters, No Doubt and the Killers, thanks to the new wave sheen that dominated their early sound. However, as later albums like Bodyparts and the group’s international hit “Hello” collaboration with producer Martin Solveig) proved the group had a confident identity of their own. dragonette.com
