futureevents We’re reaching the end of the year now but Brighton is showing know signs of slowing down. From the potential successors to Take That, soul singers, a Suspicious Elvis and John Peel’s favourite punk band, there will be plenty of music coming up. The Brighton Half Marathon, comedy and physical theatre make up the rest of my recommendations that stretch right through to next year now, and I cannot wait! Tom Hasson: future@whatsonguide.co.uk

The Undertones Sat 10th Dec, Concorde 2 Although Feargal Sharkey is no longer the front man (Paul McCloone is nowadays), The Undertones still bring Teenage Kicks to every city they visit and Brighton will be no exception next month. One of the most energetic bands around, and of course, John Peel’s favourite, the band will be an utterly fantastic way to say goodbye to 2011 and get ready for 2012. concorde2.co.uk

Aloe Blacc Fri 16th Dec, Brighton Dome He needs dollar, dollar, dollar is what he needs - and buy buying a ticket to see him, that’s exactly what he’ll get. The money would be well spent; the soul singer has a wonderful voice and a repertoire of songs that will, whether you like it or not, get stuck in your head. Tickets won’t last forever on this, so get yours now. brightondome.org

Suspiciously Elvis Christmas Special Tues 20th - Wed 21st Dec, Komedia Are you a fan of Elvis? Of course you are. Have you ever seen him live? Of course you haven’t. Suspiciously Elvis is the closest thing you’ll find to the real Elvis these days; it could even be him… The show will be filled with more than enough sing-alongs to keep you in good spirits right through to New Years! komedia.co.uk/Brighton 4

One Direction

futureevents

Sun 8th Jan, Brighton Centre Despite not winning the X-Factor, the teenage boy band One Direction already have a sizeable following. Like JLS before them, the five-piece have gained the affections of fans up and down the country. With their first headline tour, expect screaming girls making the music all but inaudible. Horrible as that sounds, it was the same for Take That 15 years ago. brightoncentre.co.uk

Chris Addison Sun 5th Feb, Theatre Royal Now a Mock The Week regular, Chris Addison is becoming a firm favourite in homes across the country as the likable, edgy (but not too edgy) comic everyone loves. After his standout performance in The Thick Of It, his stand-up shows have been selling out and each of his TV appearances are welcomed with open arms. Well, apart from those insurance commercials… atgtickets.com/theatre-royal-brighton

Brighton Half Marathon Sun 19th Feb Having run this very half-marathon before, I can tell you it is definitely worth it. Not only is it for a good cause, raising money for The Sussex Beacon, but it will make you feel fantastic when you eventually finish. Although, if you’re anything like me (no training) you’ll also be in agony. Sign up now to get yourself a spot! brightonhalfmarathon.com

DV8-Can We Talk About This? Wed 29th Feb - Sat 3rd March, The Corn Exchange Lloyd Newson’s award winning UK theatre company DV8 present their new piece of physical theatre which explores freedom of speech, censorship and Islam. Mixing dance, theatre, real-life interviews and archive footage, the show will examine how events in recent years have affected and influenced our daily lives, from multicultural policies to press freedom. brightondome.org

novfocus Whether it’s fireworks or film scores you’re after this month you won’t be disappointed. There’s also a chance to get more familiar with our marine cousins, without having to set foot in the water. However, for my money, the must-do thing this month is making it to at least one artist’s house. Nothing can really beat original artwork and you may just pick up a perfect Christmas present or two. Greg Furlong: focus@whatsonguide.co.uk

Brighton Lions Fireworks Display Sat 5th, Sussex County Cricket Ground If you fancy an explosive spectacle on Guy Fawkes Night then the Annual Brighton Lions Firework Night is the place to be. It’s the biggest single fireworks display in Sussex, even tipped as one of the top ten displays in the UK by The Times. Needless to say tickets get snapped up quickly so it’s worth booking in advance. sussexcricket.co.uk

WhaleFest 2011 Sat 5th - Sun 6th There’s something magical about whales and dolphins. Planet Whale are the experts, so who better to organise Whalefest, the first and largest event of its kind in Europe. There’s a fun-packed programme of events on offer, like going eye to eye with a life-sized Blue Whale, taking a ‘virtual’ dolphin watching trip, even exploring the inside of a whale’s stomach …eeugh! planetwhale.com/whalefest

The Fairy Queen Sun 6th, Theatre Royal Adapted from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Fairy Queen is the third and grandest of Purcell’s semi operas. Each act presents a series of Masques, introducing many diverse characters, such as Sleep, Mystery, the Four Seasons, Hymen and Phoebus; combining magic, metaphor and comedy. This new, exciting and accessible production gives a fresh look at Purcell’s finest theatrical and musical achievement. bremf.org.uk 6

Fri 11th, Brighton Rocks Bar Stella Starr of legendary VAVAVAVOOM! fame presents a new monthly night to showcase some of the best burlesque acts and GoGo dancers in town. This month’s star attractions include Coco Deville, Miss Blue Belle and Lily L’Amore. The Damned Sun 13th, Brighton Centre On this special 35th anniversary of one of the UK’s first pioneering punk bands, The Damned return to Brighton to perform a one off show like no other. Performing their stand-out debut album DAMNED, DAMNED, DAMNED, and the classic BLACK album in their entirety, plus a host of favourites, this is one show any punk fan young or old won’t want to miss. brightoncentre.co.uk

65Daysofstatic Perform Live Underscore To Silent Running Fri 25th, Duke of York’s Picturehouse Hotly anticipated and successfully premièred at the Glasgow Film Festival earlier this year, 65daysofstatic original 90 minute score to Douglas Trumbull’s 1972 science fiction classic Silent Running is coming to Brighton. Known for a depth and scale of sound expect an immense cinematic soundscape that anyone there will be talking about for some time to come. picturehouses.co.uk

Artist’s Open Houses Sat 26th & Sun 27th, Various Venues Browsing artists’ homes, with a glass of mulled wine in hand, has to offer some better Christmas gift options than the high street and yet another new Jamie Oliver cook book! I might be alone but I have actually been pining for colder climates. This is for one reason - the kick off of Sunday roast season 2011! In Brighton, let’s be honest, a vacant Sunday is easy to fill but sometimes a lazy day with food as the focal point ticks all the boxes. Brighton rocks and Brighton roasts rock even more. I rest my case below… Suzie Waters: eat@whatsonguide.co.uk

The Foragers 3 Stirling Place, Hove, 01273 733134 The Foragers source absolutely everything from Sussex and cook it all in house under instruction from talented head chef Josh Kitson. The highlights of their Sunday Roasts are many … Topside of Beef marinated in English mustard, curried parsnips, multi-coloured carrots, delicious veggie options. For a sweet ending to an unforgettable meal I can highly recommend the honey and almond ice-cream and Foragers Mess. theforagerspub.co.uk

The Mucky Duck 7-9 Manchester Street, 01273 601450 This is a new addition to Brighton’s Sunday roast circuit. A traditional mixture of roasts with free range chicken, lamb, pork, beef and a vegetarian option all served with garlic and herb roast potatoes and seven superbly cooked vegetables. Add the huge Yorkshire puddings and fantastic home made desserts and you have a lovely pub in which to eat some great food. themuckyduckbrighton.co.uk

Upper Deck Restaurant The Rendezvous Casino, Brighton Marina Village, 01273 605602 On the top floor of the casino overlooking the harbour entrance with the sea sparkling what a better place to indulge in a superb selection of roast lunch dishes as well as a fish and veggie option. There’s a great choice of starters, yummy puds and all at an affordable price. Perfectly cooked and presented and pianist to boot. rendezvouscasino.com 8

culture&events October may have been big on Comedy Festivals but believe it or not the larks continue into November, friends. Not only do we have the great Stephen Merchant and Dave ‘black bin bags’ Spikey, featured below, there’s also the ‘Charity Chuckle’ at the Latest Music Bar on the 8th. Guilt free laughter is not something that features too often in my world so I reckon I’ll get myself down there! Simon Amphlett: culture@whatsonguide.co.uk

Kalashnikov: In the Woods By the Lake Fri 4th – Sun 6th, Nightingale Theatre Acclaimed writer Fraser ‘Breakfast with Mugabe’ Grace brings us this provocative and fascinating look at Mikhail Kalashnikov, soviet hero and inventor of the AK47 rifle. Exploring difficult questions of culpability and responsibility in a darkly comic fashion, the play sees a young journalist track down the elderly, yet still fiery Kalashnikov in his remote woodland cottage. nightingaletheatre.co.uk

The Trials of Harvey Matusow Tues 8th - Wed 9th, Upstairs at Three & Ten Robert Cohen provides an illuminating insight into the torrid age of McCarthyism in this highly acclaimed one man play, showcasing the true story of one of America’s most notorious liars. Harvey Matusow was a communist but traded it in to become a paid ‘informant,’ telling lots of old fibs! A surprisingly colourful life followed too. upstairsatthreeandten.co.uk

Colour Out Of Space Fri 11th - Sun 13th, Old Market Billed as “no ordinary festival” and in its fifth year, this avant garde exploration of art and sound certainly does sound a bit different. The three day event sees local and international twiddlers come together in a friendly and relaxed setting to stretch the boundaries of what is possible through poetry, jazz, the psychedelic and more! theoldmarket.com 10

Stephen Merchant Sat 19th, Brighton Centre Poor Stephen. Not only must he deal with constant questions about his more famous partner (a certain Ricky G) his uncommon height and the terrible voice-overs, he’s also feeling somewhat lonely and needs a wife! To that end, he has embarked on a nationwide tour to charm and amuse the fairer sex, whilst being jolly funny and endearing to all along the way. brightoncentre.co.uk

Oska Bright Film Festival Tue 22nd – Thurs 24th, Dome This November the Brighton Dome presents the fifth international festival of short films and digital media made by people with a learning disability. Australian and Canadian films of all genres predominate but there are titles from all countries, as well as masterclasses, training, panel discussions and a wrap party, with awards! At a mere £1 per screening it’s a must. brightondome.org

Dave Spikey Words Don’t Come Easy Sun 27th - Theatre Royal I for one agree with the aforementioned Phoenix Nights and Stand Up star. I have just seventy words in which to cover his prolific career as TV host, writer and Chief Biomedical Scientist in Haematology! Not to mention his brilliant new show concerning the vagaries of language and the comedic difficulties that result. It’s impossible! Or is it? atgtickets.com

health&lifesyle

health&lifestyle Being a guy I am lucky to say that I need a haircut regularly as my locks continue to grow, thankfully. I am of the curly variety so need a good hairdresser who knows wavy hair. I found that person in a salon in Brighton called Mo at Celly’s. They have created a chain of 16 modern, well equipped salons with 3 being in the city of Brighton & Hove. Justin Williams: lifestyle@whatsonguide.co.uk

Celly’s Hair www.cellys.co.uk 94 Western Road, Brighton 01273 735785 5 Queens Road, Brighton 01273 773345 64 George Street, Hove 01273 775977 My partner told me about Celly’s and I was intrigued to find out more as the prices they advertise are amazing at £9 for any single treatment be it a cut or a colour. This being the case, especially in these tough economic times, Celly’s is appealing to many people who want the experience of a top notch salon but without the high prices. complimentary coffee. I was welcomed by Mo who is a highly trained hairdresser who worked at top salons prior to Celly’s. We discussed my hair before I was lead away to have it washed. I felt at ease and delighted with the end of result. As Mo said to me “hairdressers love to do hair” and I can see why. The best part is I paid just £9 and they offered me a loyalty card. So I will definitely be back when my hair has grown again. £2 off with the coupon opposite.

filmclub If you’re a local film maker, and I know there are lots of you out there, get down to Riki Tik every Sunday for ‘Riki Fliks’. Apart from showing some well loved movies and supplying free popcorn, they let local short film makers show off their wares. Drop your film (no more than ten minutes long) into the venue and you may be sharing a bill with your fave director. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk

Cinecity

Thurs 17th Nov - Sun 4th Dec, The 9th Brighton Film Festival When you think of international film festivals you probably think of Cannes or Sundance but do you know that we have one in our own backyard? Cinecity, now in its ninth year, is the largest independent film festival on the south coast and boasts a huge line up of films and exclusive events. Most of the film screenings can be found at the Duke of York’s cinema and the festival is book ended by Steve McQueen’s award winning sex addiction drama ‘Shame’ (17th) and Roman Polanski’s eagerly awaited new film ‘Carnage’ (4th Dec). In between there is a huge amount of quality celluloid to get stuck into. ‘The Deep Blue Sea’ starring Rachel Weisz - Ralph Fiennes’ directorial debut, ‘Coriolanus’,

18

Japanese samurai pic ‘Hara-Kiri’ and the French 3D silhouette animation ‘Tales of the Night’ are among some of the international treats on offer. If documentaries are more your bag then head to ‘Bombay Beach’, winner of the best documentary feature award at Tribeca and ‘The Ballad of Genesis P and Lady J’, an intimate portrait of one time Brighton resident and Psychic TV frontman, Genesis P Orridge. Something I’m looking forward to is 65daysofstatic performing an original score to one of my favourite films, Douglas Trumbull’s classic seventies eco sci-fi ‘Silent Running’ (25th). Add to that Q&A’s and screenings of some amazing local talent and Cinecity looks to be a very exciting prospect.

Fri 4th, In Cinemas A Hollywood screenwriter (James Marsden) moves with his wife (Kate Bosworth) to her home town in the Deep South. They soon find themselves menaced by locals whose welcoming smiles mask their true feelings for the brash outsider and the girl who went away. A remake of the seventies controversial classic by Sam Peckinpah banned by the BBFC for many a year. Probably not so controversial.

The Awakening Fri 11th, In Cinemas It’s 1921 and haunted by the death of her fiancé; Florence Cathcart (Rebecca Hall) spends her time debunking supernatural claims. She feels compelled to accept a request to go to a boarding school in the countryside where a boy has recently been found dead and rumours about a ghost haunting the school are causing panic amongst the locals. Dominic West and Imelda Staunton also star.

Arthur Christmas Fri 11th, In Cinemas The latest digital 3D animation from Aardman and Sony Pictures Animation tells the story of an unlikely festive hero. Santa’s not-so-little helper Arthur has an urgent task to complete before the big day. Fun for all the family is guaranteed from a voice cast that includes James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie and Bill Nighy. If this doesn’t get you in the festive mood then nothing will.

barlife The Seven Dials area of Brighton is probably the most underrated corner of our fine and fair city. Although people might balk at the climb it offers just as much in the way of great boozers as the equally mountainous Hanover area. Here I have equipped my day sack, donned my walking books, donned my gaiters, summoned my guides and rounded up the very best that alpine location has to offer. Danny Bowman: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk

Fogg’s 82 Dyke Road, 01273 721285 Simple one-room effort replete with fancy furniture and velveteen booths. Serves a respectful menu which includes starters such as chorizo cooked in red wine sauce served with bread £5.25, sandwiches like minute steak sandwich at £6.95 and mains pan fried Cajun chicken burger with fries and red slaw £7.85. There’s a small enclosed, decked patio around the side. Quiet by day, crazy by night.

Tin Drum Charcuterie 95 - 97 Dyke Road, 01273 777575 Just recently refurbished and is now a monument to splendour. You are invited one-and-all to come in and order a bottle of house wine to go with your cheese and charcuterie platter. Behind the bar hangs an array of salamis and saucissons that have been sourced locally and cured by the patrons, be gad, which are sliced and served to order.

The Good Companions 132 Dyke Road, 01273 204993 Largish pub with an Island bar that offers a nice line in mood lighting. Serves a selection of nine ales with plaques lauding their respective qualities. Also boasts an impressive collection of lagers and ciders as well as hard liquors. Offers pub classics such as hake and chips £9.50, sausage and onion sandwiches £4.95 and apple and raisin crumble for dessert. 20

1 Chatham Place, 01273 329444 Here you can actually get the best of both worlds. An old school local booze, with a young and friendly crowd without the cliqueness you might have been expecting. Known for the eclectic tunes floating in from the sound system and serving up some rare speciality beers on tap. It has a small street terrace outside which is always popular whatever the weather.

The West Hill 67 Buckingham Place, 01273 748849 If you’re coming from the station part of Brighton this is likely to be the first pub you come to. And a welcome retreat it is too after the steep climb towards Seven Dials. Serves fantastic pub food and a Sunday roast to give your mother’s a run for its money. Open until late, a great place to finish your night.

Xuma 108 Dyke Road, 01273 885555 Another Dials pub strong on chic décor with its velvet seats, fancy bar and art clinging to every available wall surface. There is more seating downstairs in an altogether more intimate environment. Xuma’s offers live gigs, midnight poetry slams and artists’ launches every week. You may be thinking that this is an arty farty place but it actually boasts a really nice and friendly atmosphere.

The Crescent Pub 6 Clifton Hil, 01273 205260 A real off the beaten track gem, the Crescent pub will water and feed your weary soul. The offer a great collection of beers, lagers, wines and hard liquors with ales provided by Sussex’s own Harvey’s brewery. The beer garden there is partially covered and heated so outside drinking remains enjoyable in the winter months. Serves great food and roasts too.

livemusic While I predicted a cooler October to climb into bed with, an Indian summer stole upon us and decided to grant us some lovely sunshine along with some gorgeous music. While I’d be a fool to predict the weather again, what I can tell you is that there’s a reliably impressive list of bands heading our way for what should be a hot/cold and rainy/sunny moth of fun. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

Dog Is Dead Thurs 3rd, Sticky Mike’s The cheerfully-named Dog Is Dead are a catchy quintet hailing from Nottingham. After supporting Bombay Bicycle Club in September and playing at the Great Escape Festival this summer, the poppy art-rockers are building up a mighty head of steam on the back of impressive live sets filled with tight, catchy choruses, so don’t miss them, or they might kill your pooches. myspace.com/digisdeadband

Patrick Wolf Thurs 3rd, Komedia Patrick Wolf really has to be seen to be believed; part avant-garde hipster, part dark pop prince, part – well, something else entirely. He’ll be delivering his unique stories and tender tales to those lucky enough to nab a ticket early, so get on to this one quickly, or else he’ll surely vanish once more into the cool evening night like a glittery musical vampire. patrickwolf.com

Bellowhead Fri 11th, Brighton Dome The mighty Bellowhead are nothing if not refreshing. With 11 members forming a hive of creativity that jostles within songs like a tempestuous sea, the band’s blend of jazz, cabaret, folk and practically every other genre going really has no compare. They sound like a late-night bar-room brawl between pirates and an impudent orchestra, so just admit defeat and get lost in their joyousness. bellowhead.co.uk 28

Thurs 17th, Coalition If it’s experimental French electro you’re after, then look no further than Yuksek (or Pierre-Alexandre Busson to his mum). Busson’s heady mix of hooks display a real ear for a melody whilst being rooted within the swirling peaks and troughs of electronica; If the likes of ‘Tonight’ are anything to go by, you’ll want to be there in the dancehall with the other young whippersnappers. myspace.com/yuksek

The Big Pink Fri 18th, Digital Following on from the huge success of single Dominoes, The Big Pink are back on the road with fresh material from second album ‘Future This’. With a heady mix of heavy electro and huge melodies (the refrain from new track Stay Gold will rattle around your brain for days), the London-based electro-indie duo are sure to bring the house down at Digital. musicfromthebigpink.com

Heavy Load Sat 26th, Green Door Store For over 15 years, Heavy Load punks have been touring and campaigning with their Stay Up Late initiative, fighting for the rights of disabled people, like themselves, to party. After being thrust into the spotlight in an acclaimed rockumentary, the local lads won’t take any excuses if you’re not moshing at this their new album ‘Wham’ launch. Support from Sparrow and Fish Police. heavyload.org

Mariachi El Bronx Tues 29th, Concorde 2 After finding success as a rip-roaring hard punk band, something was gnawing away at the angry hearts of The Bronx: they had a dream; and that dream was to become a gloriously upbeat mariachi band. Handily named Mariachi El Bronx, the LA group are delivering stunning, accessible latin rhythms with an open heart, proving that old dogs can learn new, exciting tricks. mariachielbeonx.com

clublife If you are new to Brighton and love your clubbing then the one thing you must expect is the unexpected. No matter what music makes you strut your stuff on the floor I can guarantee that the city holds a night for you. From alternative anthems to cheesy choons and some of the most exciting cutting edge nights in the country - all available in this wonderful city of ours. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

Erol Alkan Fri 4th, The Haunt Erol Alkan started out as an Indie DJ at his club night, Trash, hosting early performances by LCD Soundsystem and Bloc Party. He started to play regular sets outside Trash but chose to focus on dance music, influenced by his sets at Bugged Out. He is also a prolific remixer and produced albums by Mystery Jets, Late of the Pier and Long Blondes. erolalkan.co.uk

Rewind with DJ Format Sat 12th, Coalition Rewind returns with some old school hip hop flavours and Brighton based DJ Format. He became a legend in the hip hop scene touring with Jurassic 5, opening for DJ Shadow and playing Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds. Format produces feel good, funk filled hip hop and embodies everything Rewind stands for. Hip Hop without any attitude, just big beats and a smile. rewindbrighton.com

David Rodigan Sat 12th, Concorde 2 For over thirty years David Rodigan has been top dog in the bass heavy atmosphere of Britain’s reggae dancehalls. The key to his success has been an unsinkable passion for reggae, which first took a hold of him when he heard ska music in the early ’sixties. He developed an obsession with the music of Jamaica and has an encyclopaedic knowledge of reggae. rodigan.com 36

Fri 18th, Concorde 2 The super villain himself returns for a very special show. Hip Hop artist Daniel Dumile has gone through a myriad of names through the years, most notably MF DOOM. He has collaborated with Danger Mouse on Danger Doom and Madlib with Madvillian but it’s his Doom alter ego that will be destroying the Concorde 2 with a sonic assault that’s not to be missed. facebook.com/mfdoom

Red Snapper Thurs 24th, Audio Red Snapper have recently released their new album ‘Key’, which features their trademark ghostly sonic landscapes, ripping machine gun rhythms and bone shaking bass. Formed in 1993 they combined a unique use of traditional jazz instrumentation with a contemporary approach with their live show influencing other dance artists. They continue to break boundaries and invent new sounds whilst staying true to their unique energy. redsnapperofficial.com

Donky Pitch Fri 25th, Riki Tik Donky Pitch returns to Riki Tik for another fantastic free party. Headliner Offshore is a London based Scot who has been releasing crunkedup, synth-laden heaters laced with influences from grime, hip hop and house since 2009. He shares the bill with Lapalux, freshly signed to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, while support comes from Moscow, GMT and the two residents Ghost Mutt and Grinel. offffshore.com

Stay Beautiful Fri 25th, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar DJ Simon Price, who you will know from the Spellbound phenomenon, brings his hugely popular London club night to our fair shores. This is music to show off to so expect dirty sleazy glam and glitter rock along with a liberal dose of hi-voltage electro and punk anthems. Guest DJs are Maxi Browne (King Adora) and Ryder Prangley of Rachel Stamp. staybeautifulclub.co.uk
