ourcity The Volks railway along the seafront is the world’s oldest operating electric railway. If we win a bid for grant funding, it could become the world’s first solar-powered electric railway. At the moment the Volks railway only runs in the summer and the train shed is in desperate need of repair. If we are successful in bringing this extra money to the city, we could replace the shed and more. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George

The Volks railway The railway was first opened 130 years ago by Magnus Volk, a leading British electrical engineer and inventor born in the city. He brought electricity to Brighton, first fitting his own house with electric lights, before moving onto the Royal Pavilion, the Dome and the Corn Exchange. We plan to invest in an all-weather train not only so that it could run all year, and build a far better shed – but we could cut our energy costs to run the train by installing solar panels on the shed and on tree-like stalks at the line’s end at Black Rock. The new proposals will be eyecatching and forward-thinking, much like Volks’ own inventions. However they will also make the most of this unique attraction on our seafront,

and bring new visitors down to that part of the city. Jobs will be created during construction and once the new train line is operating. We expect to know if we can proceed with this proposal in the next few months, and if agreed, we could see a new Volks railway running in Easter 2014. The majority of the cost would not be borne by local taxpayers, but the benefits to the city would be significant. At a time of cuts to public finances, we need to seek money from outside Brighton & Hove. The Volks railway project is an example of how we can still invest in local projects to boost tourism and the economy. www.brighton-hove.gov.uk

Since then, he’s had more than 65 semi-permanent or part time band mates, including their greatest radio champion John Peel, and Marc Riley from BBC Radio (remember Mark and Lard anyone?). This is bound to be a great show, fresh with the energy of a band afforded eternal life! theoldmarket.com

Imperial Leisure,

Home to house, hedonism and hilarity, get dolled up in your jollies and join the beautiful people for what is sure to be an evening of flamboyant frolics. hedkandi.com

X-Factor Live, Wed 30th Jan, Brighton Centre The turbulent yet still wildly popular TV show is bringing its road show to venues nationally. The TV battles are over, only the victorious remain. novfocus After giving your lungs and throat a rest from their overuse after last month’s comedy festival, boot them straight back up in anticipation for the upcoming Brighton Film Festival, sponsored by CineCity (which I’m pretty sure is currently in the running for best pun of 2012). As winter begins to wrap its chilly tendrils around the city, there are enough screenings and performances this month to keep you more than toasty. Andrew Kilpatrick: culture@whatsonguide.co.uk

The 1589 Florentine Intermedi: Celebrating An Extravagant Wedding

Sat 3rd, St Bartholomew’s Church With a spectacular mixture of aerial dance and Renaissance era music, this performance, based on an archaic tradition of wedding entertainment, brings all the excitement and energy to the stage with an orchestra, choir and dance provided by art and performance company ‘Zu Aerial’. Being taken back to the 16th century has never been so extravagant! bremf.org.uk

Claudia Brücken

Sat 10th, Concorde 2 Front lady of the highly influential German synthpop icons ‘Propaganda’, Claudia Brücken melds recognisable pop hooks and industrial tinged orchestration with a stunning live show as she delves into the discography of the many bands and projects she has been involved in, from her work with Paul Humphreys of OMD to tracks produced from working with Thomas Leer in their band ‘Act’. www.concorde2.co.uk/events

Clock Opera Mon 12th, The Haunt Londoner quartet ‘Clock Opera’ play The Haunt this month, bringing with them their trademark post-rock and math influenced indie, focusing on much on atmosphere and tone as on solid song composition. Their mechanical sound, precision and memorable hooks make them a sight to behold live, drawing in the audience to their inner workings as they become part of the same machine. thehauntbrighton.co.uk 8

filmclub In the run up to Christmas it’s a real mixed bag in the cinemas. There’s the big event movies as the Twilight saga reaches its conclusion (16th) and Hugh Jackman leads the voice cast in ‘Rise of the Guardians’ (30th). There’s also a host of smaller budget offerings like ‘Excision’ (2nd) which includes Malcolm McDowell, John Waters and Traci Lords or Jake Gyllenhaal’s latest, cop thriller ‘End of Watch’ (23rd). Lovely Molly - OUT NOW ON DVD Newlyweds Molly (Gretchen Lodge), an ex addict, and Tim (Johnny Lewis) move into her deceased parent’s house where painful memories soon resurface. Writer, director Eduardo Sanchez was partly responsible for one of the most original horror films of the last twenty five years, ‘The Blair Witch Project’, and, initially, ‘Lovely Molly’ seems like a cross between this and ‘Paranormal Activity’ but it soon becomes apparent that this is a different beast altogether. The unease and tension that is so skilfully built up in the first part of the film soon unravels and Molly’s tale doesn’t really seem to reach fruition. Although there are hints of

20

what’sonnov12

supernatural involvement, this is disappointingly underplayed and, as a result, nothing seems to make any sense. The hand held footage seems to be shoehorned in to remind us that Sanchez kicked the whole genre off and serves no purpose in the narrative. Instead it feels that you’re watching footage of a neighbour’s trip to Wales. Far more chilling though is the fake documentary series that comes as an extra on the disc. This explores the myth surrounding the house that is woefully glossed over in the main feature and hints at a great film waiting to be made. Unfortunately ‘Lovely Molly’ isn’t it.

Fri 2nd, In Cinemas There are already predictions of another Oscar nomination for leading lady Marion Cotillard as she portrays a killer whale trainer who suffers a terrible accident after becoming close with a father and his daughter. French director Jacques Audiard is also gathering praise from all corners and this looks like one that will be on everyone’s lips as a contender for film of the year.

Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan Fri 9th, In Cinemas Ray Harryhausen is a cinematic legend with the original ‘Clash of The Titans’ and a host of others under his belt. This is the definitive documentary about the man and his career. With contributions from Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam and many more esteemed filmmakers, this promises to show just how many imaginations this amazing talent captured.

College & ‘Drive’ Screening Sat 17th, Duke Of York’s French electronic producer and member of the Drive soundtrack, College, are playing a special one-off show in the Duke of York’s, preceding a screening of last year’s critically acclaimed Drive. Taking reference points from nostalgic origins, College creates meandering and evocative house with atmosphere streaked in pink neon and city lights, assuring this event to be an ethereal experience. picturehouses.co.uk

The Muppet Christmas Carol Fri 23rd, In Cinemas It’s an unbelievable twenty years ago that this first graced the screens. Kermit and co’s version of the Dickens classic gets a well deserved rerelease in the run up to the festive season. Directed by Muppet creator’s son Brian Henson and starring Michael Caine as old Scrooge, people of a certain age will be able to relive their own childhood alongside their kids.

livemusic Summer is gone, and long live autumn. Or is it winter yet? To be honest, I can’t tell. But what I do know (and I know a lot) is November is stuffed to the gills with delightful, odd, and delightfully odd acts desperate to see you down at the front , under the bright lights and witnessing some future stars. It’s the season for bats, rockers and sharks no less. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

Bat For Lashes Sun 4th, Dome Concert Hall The beautiful, beguiling Bat For Lashes is back in Brighton again, and is ready to delight in the ample surroundings of the Dome Concert Hall. Natasha Khan, as she is presumably known to friends and family, has a string of BRIT Award nominations and will be touring The Haunted Man this time around. Come bat your lashes at a fine talent. batforlashes.comcom

Kristina Train Mon 5th, Komedia Compared to Dusty Springfield and Aretha Franklin by the Sunday Times, Kristina Train is held in high regard indeed - and it’s not hard to see why. As soon as you hear tracks such as ‘Dream Of Me’, you realise you may be hearing this voice for decades. A truly stunning talent, so watch this space - I guarantee she’ll be delivering classics soon. kristinatrain.com

Walking Papers Thurs 8th, The Haunt Walking Papers are on their first ever UK headline tour, and by the looks of the line-up, they will blow your snakeskin boots clean off. Featuring Guns N Roses bass legend Duff McKagan, the rock’n’roll troupe deliver hard riffs and licks for you to wash down with strong whiskey. 56 Bluesy, ballsy, and something to tap a toe to. facebook.com/pages/WalkingPapers/371321559561874 30

Mon 12th, Green Door Store These guys could either sink or swim (geddit?), but one thing’s for sure, they’ll be worth checking out live to try and work out for yourselves. La Shark are an unpredictable band with odd sounds - listen to single ‘Magazine Cover’ for a taste, and try to forget the chorus melody you can’t. They’ve supported the Maccabees, so come with pedigree. lashark.com

Pulled Apart By Horses Wed 14th, Concorde 2 This Leeds four-piece have done the curious thing of staying true to their punk/metal roots while being able to draw in a mainstream radio audience - top work. Song titles such as ‘I Punched A Lion In The Throat’ give you a hint of what lies in wait, and the boys rarely disappoint with thrilling live shows packed full of boisterous adrenaline. pulledapartbyhorses.com

Cosmo Jarvis Fri 23rd, Prince Albert Following great reviews from musical heavyweights such as Mojo and Q, the wonderfully-titled Cosmo Jarvis has gained a huge following online and a host of celebrity admirers. The talented 23-year-old is a musician and director, and can seemingly turn his hand to topics including ‘Gay Pirates’ and parental abuse - so a wide range of issues then. Catch him before he’s a star. cosmojarvis.com

clublife

clublife It’s not only mere mortals that return again and again once they have visited our great city. Superstar DJs just can’t help themselves after they’ve tasted the breath of fresh air that is our club scene. After his sold out set last year David Rodigan returns to the Concorde 2 on Friday 30th with his own brand of sunshine Reggae vibes and Andrew Weatherall hits The Loft on Friday 2nd. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

Applesauce Fri 2nd, Concorde 2 This new club night promises the biggest names in disco, house, electro and techno from around the world. The opening party features Vitalic and Loops of Fury. Vitalic comes armed with projectors, screens, a live drummer and a keyboard player whilst Loops of Fury’s high energy DJ set will lead you down a musical path to 'the place where Rave, Electro and Techno meet!' vitalic.org

Lord Finesse Sun 11th, Concorde 2 Bronx born Lord Finesse, also known as the leader of the D.I.T.C. crew, will be joined by one of UK’s leading hip hop artists, rapper and hip hop label YNR founder Jehst for a very special one-off show. Stellar support throughout the night comes from Neil B, DJ Ideal, Tappa and Vinyl Veterans. More hip-hop greatness than you can shake a stick at. facebook.com/lordfinesseditc

Public Service Broadcasting Sun 11th, Green Door Store Their manifesto is ‘teaching the lessons of the past through the music of the future’ and having been given exclusive access to propaganda films from the WW2 by the BFI they promise to be a truly unique live act with rare unseen footage integrated into their performance. This is an event which will make you dance and think in equal measure. thegreendoorstore.co.uk 38

The 2 Bears

clublife

Sat 24th, Coalition The 2 Bears are Joe Goddard of Hot and Raf Rundell. The duo produces original material amalgamating various styles including garage, house, hip hop, soul and also host a radio show on Ministry Of Sound Radio. They have also produced remixes for several established artists including Santigold, Metronomy, Toddla and The View. Aluna George and Union complete this cracking line up. the2bears.co.uk

Ugly Duckling Sun 25th, The Haunt After five albums and more than a decade of touring, Ugly Duckling continues to make hip-hop with integrity. While most people in the business are constantly attempting to reinvent themselves, Ugly Duckling has remained dedicated to the admirable goal of old-school hip-hop and straight-up good times, with an infectious signature sound and a vast reaching back catalogue of unmistakable hooks and quality beats. oneinchbadge.com

Happy Mondays Fri 30th, Brighton Centre After selling out much of their UK comeback tour earlier this year, the full original line-up of the Happy Mondays will be bringing their classic Madchester sound to the seaside. The band will be performing a full live show with Hacienda and acid house legends 808 State Sound System providing the support. A chance to see a legendary band back in full flow. brightoncentre.co.uk
