futureevents

futureevents As far as the Future pages of What’s On Guide is concerned, the year is coming to an end already. Good thing there’s plenty to be excited about in the final months of the year then! The coming months will be bringing you music from Dragons, Velociraptors and Leonard Cohen’s son to Brighton. There’s also shows from Brian Cox and his Uncaged Monkeys, Dave Spikey and Steve-O too. Tom Hasson: future@whatsonguide.co.uk

Frosts‚ Fun at the Fireworks Fri 4 Nov, Brighton Racecourse, Freshfield Road Frosts and Brighton Racecourse have joined forces to present Britain’s Got Talent winner and runner up, Jai McDowall and Ronan Parke on stage. With a DJ and an amazing fireworks display set to music this will undoubtedly be the musical highlight of the autumn. Tickets from £10 with children under 3 free. 01273 603580 brighton-racecourse.co.uk

Steve-O Mon 7th Nov, Coalition The man you’ll all recognise as the star of both the Jackass TV show and movies, as well as Wildboyz will be coming to Brighton with his Entirely Too Much Information tour this November. Expect a mix of stand up comedy, bar tricks and of course, stunts. Whether he’ll be stapling things to himself again or worse, the show will be a spectacle for sure. drinkinbrighton.co.uk/coalition

Brighton Craft Fair Fri 18th - Sun 20th Nov, Corn Exchange Showcasing well over 100 of the very best designers and makers from across the country selling their original, highly desirable and mostly hand-made work, the Brighton Craft Fair makes its welcome return to the Corn Exchange this November. The fair is fast becoming known as the place to buy those exclusive Christmas gifts you’ll not find anywhere else. brightondome.org 4

WHAT’S ON GUIDE BRIGHTON & HOVE Dave Spikey

futureevents

Sun 27th Nov, Theatre Royal Dave Spikey, he of Phoenix Nights fame, will be visiting Brighton this November for what looks set to a night of full-blown hilarity. His new show focuses on the vagaries of the English language. From terrible chat up lines and parents trying to explain the facts of life to absurd newspaper stories, foreign languages and, he promises, a ‘Champion the Wonder Horse’ sing-a-long. atgtickets.com/Theatre-Royal-Brighton

Kasabian Mon 28th Nov, Brighton Centre At the time of writing, the band’s fourth album, Velociraptor! has yet to be released. If reviews are right, it’s going to be an album of full-blown rock’n’roll that will have everyone singing along and head-banging. If it’s not as good as expected? Well, they’ve released three albums of almost overly swagger-filled rock already so the show will be more than entertaining regardless. brightoncentre.co.uk

Little Dragon Sat 3rd Dec, Concorde 2 Little Dragon’s 2011 album Ritual Union is without a doubt one of my favourite albums of the year. It’s smart, full of smooth rhythms and melodic in all the right places. Catching them at the Concorde 2 in December to see the album performed live is going to be a great way to end the year. It’s going to be a fantastic show. concorde2.co.uk

Uncaged Monkeys Thurs 15th Dec, Brighton Dome Wonders of the Universe presenter Brian Cox is just one of four hosts in this evening of science, discovery and hilarity. Along with Radio 4’s Robin Ince, author of Bad Science Ben Goldacre and author of the award winning Fermat’s Last Theorem Simon Singh, Cox will be showing us why being human and inquisitive is so utterly wonderful. Prepare to be amazed. brightondome.org

octfocus Maybe it’s because my birthday is in October but I’ve always loved this time of year. Clothing options that were redundant over the summer months are suddenly de rigeur: no more coat dilemmas, or turning up at a club night realising you’re still wearing your flip-flops. So here’s to changing your wardrobe, plenty of new opportunities for dressing up here, and seeing everyone out in their winter finery very soon. Greg Furlong: focus@whatsonguide.co.uk

999 Sat 1st, The Hydrant Pick up any half decent Punk compilation and alongside familiar tracks from The Clash, Sex Pistols and Ramones you’ll find a pure gem from 999. Less well-known but no less original, they built their fan base on London’s ’77 punk scene and signed to United Artists with the Buzzcocks that same year. Luckily for us they never stopped. Get yourself along to this one! thehydrantbrighton.co.uk

World Sacred Music Festival 2011 Sun 2nd – Sun 16th, Various Venues Any event that promises to span the mountains of Tibet, the streets of Pakistan, villages of Africa and Bengal and our very own South Downs gets my attention. With cymbal crashing monks, masterful kora music, a Sufi minstrel and the ritual destruction of a giant mandala on the program they look set to make good on that promise. worldsacredmusic.org

Brightona 2011 Sun 9th, Madeira Drive Hundreds of bikes rumble into town once again for the annual Brightona event in aid of The Sussex Heart Charity. There’s plenty to drool at if you get your fix on two wheels, from Japanese crotch rockets to chrome-laden cruisers, sleek Italian racers to custom street fighters. Stalls, music and prizes too. Don’t forget to drop some coins in the buckets and do your bit. brightona.brighton-rock.net 6

Thu 13th – Sun 16th, The Old Market City Books has been catering to book lovers of Brighton and Hove for 25 years this month and they deserve to celebrate. Here’s to another 25 years. city-books.co.uk

Krua Anne 18 Kensington Gardens, 01273 628555 I discovered this place by chance as it is tucked away opposite White Rabbit pub in Kensington Gardens. Good value, great service, clean and a menu with all the classics cooked to perfection. My favourite is Masaman Curry a very mild curry dish from south Thailand, rich in coconut milk. Enjoy a jasmine tea and enjoy the graffiti with a Thai vibe. kruaanne.com

culture&events

culture&events Don’t be glum, chum. October is officially Laughter Month with two comedy festivals, huzzah! As well as the Dome’s chuckle fest covered below, Upstairs at Three and Ten has their own Comedy Fringe running from the 13th to the 28th. (I recommend the awkward bumblings of Brian Gittins on the 21st) Or if all that won’t release your autumnal angst, there’s always Boxing at the Brighton Centre on the 22nd! Simon Amphlett: culture@whatsonguide.co.uk

The Servant Sat 1st – Sat 8th, New Venture Theatre Wouldn’t it be nice to have a servant, eh? New oranges daily, your newspaper freshly squeezed and your pants ironed. But wait! The wealthy young wastrel in this play finds it’s not all breakfast in bed, oh no. His manservant appears somewhat Machiavellian, slowly turning the tables whilst blurring class and status lines. Think I’ll fetch me own slippers thanks... newventure.org.uk

Linton Kwesi Johnson Sat 8th, Old Market A unique opportunity to see a global reggae icon and unsung hero of the British cultural scene. Johnson’s Jamaican patois delivers dub personal and political commentary on our times, from “Inglan Is A Bitch” in 1980 to becoming the first black poet to be published by Penguin Classics in 2003. Features support by Kei Miller and Q&A with Johnson and Colin Grant. theoldmarket.com

Brighton Comedy Festival Fri 7th - Sat 22nd, Dome It’s chucklin’ time, pups! And the variety of funsters a’punning is fantastic. David O’ Doherty and Paul Zerdin are musts but there are plenty of other laughs to be had. Local types Seann Walsh and Zoe Lyons delight, Milton Jones and Frisky and Mannish provide more family orientated larks and there’s even a spot by Paul “yes that one” Daniels! brightoncomedyfestival.com 10

The Humble Quest for Universal Genius Fri 21st, Upstairs at Three & Ten Join comedian Mark Allen in his search for a good old fashioned all round genius. Sure, he says, we’ve got your specialised boffins like Hawking and Chomsky, but where are the polymathic types? Some might say he’s looking in the wrong place in pitting other stand-ups against each other on stage, but it sure is funny. upstairsatthreeandten.co.uk

Jerry Sadowitz Sun 23rd, Komedia Have a care now, gentle reader. One does not go lightly into the den of Jerry Sadowitiz, for he is indeed the most terrifying and offensive comedian this writer has ever seen. Sparing no race, creed, political persuasion or sensibility, Jerry Sadowitz is an equal opportunities destroyer of anything that you may hold dear. (But there are magic tricks, jolly good ones at that). komedia.co.uk

fun4kids So much to do in the city this autumn plus half term at the end of the month, perfect. All I want now is a Brighton & Hove Albion football kit so hope to buy one when I visit the stadium for a tour. Then back into town for the best ever ice cream at Boho Gelato! Who needs the summer as an excuse to pig out? Oh, and don’t forget Halloween on 31st … Boo!!! editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Amex Stadium Tours See Behind-The-Scenes The Football Club is now taking bookings for exclusive behind-thescenes tours of the club’s new home. The tours run on Thursdays at 10am, 2pm and 6pm, and last approximately two hours. The opportunity to purchase Seagulls’ merchandise or a souvenir of your visit can be done in the Seagulls’ Superstore. Bookings and enquiries: Email: stadiumtours@bhafc.co.uk Tel: 0845 8730251 Web: seagulls.co.uk

Boho Gelato 6 Pool Valley, 01273 727205 Seb Cole was regularly travelling to Rome to work when he fell in love with gelato. So much so that in July he opened Boho Gelato in the Pool Valley. There are 24 daily changing flavours of brightly coloured gelato. There are the regulars including mango and melon but some really unique ones such as Eton Mess, carrot cake and pink champagne. All made with local non-homogenised milk. Facebook: Boho Gelato Italian Ice-Cream

Brighton Toy & Model Museum Open Tues - Sat, 01273 749494 There’s more tucked away under the Brighton railway arches than just the trendy new Green Door bar and the occasional busker. Brighton Toy and Model Museum is a stalwart favourite for a nostalgic afternoon spent among Peter Rabbit, Mecano sets, Corgi cars and model railways. My own personal favourite is the slightly terrifying ‘Dunkard’s Dream’ vintage penny arcade. brightontoymuseum.co.uk 16

filmclub

filmclub Starring ‘Leon’s’ Jean Reno as patriarch of a violent criminal underworld, ‘The Dead List’ (On DVD, 10th) weaves a powerful portrait of the inner machinations of the mafia. Keeping his friends close and his enemies closer, Milo rules his clan with an iron fist but with enemies circling and federal agents closing in he must pick his battles, between the son he loves and the men who want him dead. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk

The Beaver 10th, On DVD Jodie Foster directs herself alongside Mel Gibson in this tale of a man plagued by his own demons. Successful toy executive and family man Walter Black (Gibson) has totally lost himself in depression until he comes across a beaver hand puppet that totally transforms his life. From a script by newcomer Kyle Killen, this is a curious tale that melds the quirkiness of Charlie Kaufman with the Anthony Hopkins classic ‘Magic’. Unfortunately it doesn’t hit the lofty heights of either. This is mainly due to the abandonment of subtlety, the script preferring to bludgeon its message home instead. It is, however, saved

20

what’sonoct11

from crashing completely by a masterful performance from Gibson. He may have made some curious life choices recently but they are in direct contrast to the roles he has decided to take on since stepping back in front of the camera. His last two films have reminded me exactly what made him such an unstoppable force early on in his career and maybe is what attracted him to this role of a man on a journey of rediscovery. Jodie Foster’s direction and the supporting cast take a back seat as ‘The Beaver’ is a piece that is totally overshadowed by Mel and his Ray Winstone-alike puppet pal.

WHAT’S ON GUIDE BRIGHTON & HOVE Johnny English Reborn

filmclub

7th, In Cinemas Another outing for Rowan Atkinson’s disaster prone secret agent, Johnny English and a sequel to 2003’s James Bond spoof. Written by Atkinson, Reborn sees English brought out of retirement and attempting to stop a group of international assassins before they eliminate a world leader and cause global chaos. With ‘Blackadder’ co-stars Rik Mayall and Tim McInnery on board could this one actually be funny?

Tyrannosaur 7th, In Cinemas This is the first feature film to be written and directed by actor Paddy Considine. Joseph (Peter Mullan) is a man plagued by a rage that is driving him to self-destruction. As his life spirals into turmoil, a chance of redemption appears in the form of Hannah (Olivia Coleman). Their relationship develops to reveal that Hannah is hiding a secret of her own, with devastating results.

Real Steel 14th, In Cinemas In the year 2020, robots have replaced humans in boxing. Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) loses a chance to become a boxing champion when robots take over and he becomes a small-time promoter. When he has difficulty making a living, he reluctantly teams up with his son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build a robot that can contend for the championship. Anyone remember seventies game Raving Bonkers?

Stake Land 17th, On DVD When an epidemic of vampirism strikes, humans find themselves on the run from vicious, feral beasts. Cities are tombs and survivors cling together in rural pockets, fearing nightfall. When his family is slaughtered, young Martin (Connor Paolo) is taken under the wing of a grizzled, wayward hunter (Nick Damici) whose new prey are the undead. A lot better than most of the recent vampire flicks.

barlife In these wretched times of financial woes it pays for a business to be able to be agile and open to new ideas. As this epoch is particularly harsh for the pub business, boozers which change and adapt and reinvent themselves need to be rewarded with the air of publicity. So here we go, what follows is a list of pubs that have recently undergone such changes and moved with the times. Danny Bowman: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk

The Mucky Duck 7-9 Manchester Street, 01273 601450 Significantly changed since the last time I was in here. Clean and tidy with alternative, Graff, Britain-centric art filling every available inch of wall space. Harvey’s Real Ale and Scrumpy on tap as well as a full food menu. Happy Hour Mondays to Fridays offers £3 for selected pints, house spirit with mixer £2.60 and house wine at £10 a bottle.

The Spotted Dog 13 Middle Street, 01273 710444 Formally the Hop Poles, the hubcap creations have been replaced by more 19th century décor giving it a similar feel to the Mesmerist. The menu is amazing with more choice than is possible to adequately list here. It is also very reasonably priced at around £8.25 a plate. There’s a humongous beer selection featuring such rarities as the legendary Delirium Tremens on tap.

The Mariner 80 East Street, 01273 748103 Is now where the Varsity once was. A large pub, but made intimate with a partition separating the main drinking area and velvet seated booths. Scandinavian wood adorns most surfaces and walking around you can only image the fortune they must have spent on furniture. They offer a great menu of ‘trad’ English food. I had my eye on the Butcher’s Board. 22

The Blind Tiger

barlife

52-54 Grand Parade, 01273 688869 You will probably remember this as formally Hector’s House. Well with the new name came a complete re-design, lick of paint and a new PA. It’s a café by day and bar/club 7 nights a week with 2 for 1 cocktails between 6 & 9pm. With film, live music, club and arts events there’s something for everyone. See website playgroupbrighton.org

The Oak 46 St. James’s Street, 01273 699248 The folks who own the Basket Makers have taken this one-time dive bar and dragged it up market. Jazz is piped out over the sound system and framed posters of everyone from Dizzy Gilespie, Muddy Waters through to Johnny Cash and Led Zeppelin are hung on the walls. Real ale including Otters and Harveys. Serves sandwiches, real Mexican chilli and mezes to share.

Chequers Inn 45 Preston Street, 01273 738 710 Although maintaining its name, the legendary Chequers has changed hands and has had a complete refurb. It’s now what I would describe as uniquely retro complete with genuine Ercol furniture and Farrow & Ball paint. A wall hanging of Morissey takes pride of place above the working fireplace. Breakspear Ales are available as well as warm pies from a hotbox behind the bar.

Le Lion D’or 9 George Street, 01273 327183 Aaah, this place reminds of the kind of bars you’d hang around on the Cote d’Azur in the 80s and 90s. The service was impeccable and the barman did not even flinch when the yummy mummy next to me asked for a pint glass to be served with her bottle of white wine. Serves Birra Moretti, Amstel and great deals on end of bin wines.

livemusic As the summer sun decides to well and truly disappear and be replaced by the joyful rain-lashed faces of new students, October finally hits Brighton’s shores. But fear not, for as the weather closes in, the music arguably gets better. So instead of sitting at home staring at the walls, get yourself out and about, and get ready for cold, cold nights with soaring synths, angular riffs and general tomfoolery. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

Emmy The Great Mon 3rd, Duke of Yorks Picturehouse Born in Hong Kong to a Chinese mother and an English father, Emmy (real name Emma-Less Moss) fuses her “stark voice with bittersweet melodies” (The Guardian). Once a vocalist of Lightspeed Champion (alongside Florence Welch) and having worked with Fatboy Slim, Moss knows how to hold her own, so pop along if you like your folk flecked with grungey influence. emmythegreat.com

Pete & The Pirates

Tender Trap Thurs 6th, Prince Albert Describing themselves as a ‘proper girl-group’, Tender Trap - led by the beguiling Amelia Fletcher - know how to party. Mixing “harmonies, oohs, ahs and sha-la-las of classic girl-pop with the stripped down beats and dirty guitars”, the band sound like they’re trying to woo you into the nearest B & B. So watch them at your peril, and don’t get too enamoured. myspace.com/tendertrap 32

Mon 3rd, Komedia The phrase ‘pop-punk’ is often met with derisory glances, yet there are few other ways to describe joyous riffs that hide a wounded heart at the centre of Pete & The Pirates’ hypnotic tracks. On record they’re infectious, but the Reading boys are no better than when belting out live licks that’ll rattle around your brain for days - days I say! peteandthepirates.co.uk

Art Brut

livemusic

Tues 11th, The Haunt With members from both England and Germany, the Berlin-based art-wave have always seen themselves more as outsiders looking in - indeed, their name refers to a French definition of outsider art. It’s somewhat of a pity for them, then, that so many people identify with their tight, taught melodies and more-English-than-acup-of-tea vocals. For fans of Wire Franz Ferdinand, and good music in general. artbrut.org.uk

Sarah Blasko Sat 15th, The Green Door Store Once the front woman of Acquiesce, Sydney-born Blasko is now going it alone with ever-impressive song writing talents and a quirky style that makes you want to give her a big hug. With a voice that is tender yet powerful in its confidence, you can’t help but be wowed by the openness and beauty on show. Like Norah Jones mixed with Radiohead. sarahblasko.com

Noah and the Whale Tues 18th, Brighton Dome After making a name for themselves around indie-folk circles with the track ‘Five Years Time’, Noah and the Whale came back suited and booted, and with an album full of tracks that could turn them into global contenders. Although they owe a fair amount of their new direction to Tom Petty, tracks like ‘Life Is Life’ are more than welcome here. noahandthewhale.com

Tues 25th , Concorde 2 While NME went crazy for The Horrors’ energetic punk debut ‘Origins’, most other onlookers were distinctly unimpressed that the band had failed to live up to the hype surrounding their haircuts and tighter-than-tight jeans. However, Faris Badwan’s band have turned themselves into a fantastic outfit. With latest album ‘Skying’ earning rave reviews, the soaring synths and epic rhythms will soar in Concorde 2. thehorrors.co.uk

clublife Pump Up The Jam returns to Coalition for a Halloween Party on Saturday 29th with Tomb Crew. They launch dance floor destroying mixes of anything bass heavy – from house to kuduro and everything in-between. As the legions of grinning converts will attest, Tomb Crew are very much the inebriated and debauched sound of fun. If that’s not enough then room two sees a face full of jungle vibes from DJ Outbreak. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

I think not. belushis.com

Planningtorock Mon 10th, Sticky Mikes Frog Bar Planningtorock is the vehicle of expression of Janine Rostron, a British musician and visual artist who has lived in Berlin for ten years. ‘W’ is her new album on DFA - James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem’s label. Multimedia and sometimes kind of multi-gender, Planningtorock seems to raise more questions than Janine often has answers for. Planningtorock is about ideas, fantasy and augmented reality. facebook.com/planningtorock 38

WHAT’S ON GUIDE BRIGHTON & HOVE Submotion Orchestra

clublife

Sat 15th, Coalition 2011 has already been a great year for Submotion Orchestra. A sold out tour was followed by their debut album going straight into the iTunes Top10 electronic albums chart. Glowing reviews from The Times, The Guardian and the Financial Times added more fuel to the fire. There are plenty of radio people in the fan club with Gilles Petersen and Jamie Cullum both supporters. submotion.co.uk

Da Doo Ron Ron Is 13 Sat 22nd, Komedia Da Doo Ron Ron celebrate their thirteenth(!) Birthday with another of their infamously fun-filled femme-tastic shindigs upstairs at the Komedia. Dressing up is actively encouraged and a good time is always guaranteed. margots.org

Your Disco Needs You Fri 28th, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar New York’s Studio 54 was the pinnacle of stylish disco parties in the 1970s where you could rub shoulders with the likes of Salvador Dali or Liza Minnelli.
