ourcity The city’s second Digital Festival recently came to a triumphant end. It was a month-long celebration of digital culture in our city exploring how digital technology is changing our lives, and what a digital future might hold. On offer were over a 100 exhibitions, conferences, debates, performances, installations and workshops. Much of the programme was free and many thousands of visitors attended. A number of well-established events even sold out in advance. Jason Kitcat: editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk | Profile Photo: Steve George

Digital Technology The festival programme was organised by many arts organisations, creative digital companies, individual designers, developers, artists and community groups from Brighton & Hove and beyond. In the city we have more people employed in the creative and cultural sector than the national average, and the two strongest areas are digital design and music, and visual and performing arts. The most innovative events and installations combined these to celebrate creativity and progress in the city. For example, the opening event involved the audience triggering a digital firework display projected onto Jubilee Library. There was also a family-friendly ‘iSpy’ digital treasure hunt around the city. Other collaborations included a video game artwork exhibition, a young people’s cultural exchange project, and a ‘makers’ faire’, where participants

were able to work on weird and wonderful technological creations. For those working in the industry, the festival is an annual opportunity to network and share ideas between the mostly small companies and organisations that make up the sector. Digital and creative industries are an important growth area for the city. For this reason, we as a council have granted funding to the festival and further support to the local digital umbrella organisation ‘Wired Sussex’. We’re also supporting ‘hub’ offices for start-up businesses The Brighton Digital Festival is a wonderful showcase of the best of our burgeoning digital sector, proving why we’re a hotbed of talent and innovation worth plugging into. eatingout

I like to cook and I am, if friends and loved ones are to be believed, pretty darn good at it. However when I’m absolutely shattered I just can’t be bothered and don’t have the energy to go out to eat. Last night was one of those times and instead of ferretting through the pile of takeaway menus I thought I’d try, online, a food service called Dinner2go.co.uk

Dinner2go 01273 608 526/Dinner2go.co.uk This is a ‘food service’ because it’s not just like phoning your local takeway jamming your phone underneath your chin whilst juggling a menu for a specific cuisine and at the same time trying to choose what you want. To start off with you can forget the phone bit as this is an online service. The hardest part of the experience is choosing what cuisine you fancy as there are numerous to choose from! There are listings from spanish, japanese, italian, indian, greek, american, fast food restaurants. If you don’t fancy anything listed call them as they also deliver lebanese, turkish, chinese, vegetarian, thai, fine dining, moroccan, food from restaurants in Brighton. This is really a food taxi delivering directly to your door anywhere in brighton, hove, shoreham, whitehawk, southwick and beyond. Plus they sell

alcohol/wine etc. My favourite restaurant in Brighton is Gars the Chinese restaurant in Prince Albert Street and I’m delighted to say that there they were and I could choose from their complete menu! Whoopee! It’s not just about ordering a full meal you can also order online just about anything that you might run out of including chocolate, soft drinks, cigarettes and toilet rolls! The delivery charge is per delivery and varies depending on your postcode from £4 to £12 whatever you’re ordering. It’s simple… 1 - Choose a restaurant 2 - Add the items to your basket 3 - Checkout and enter your address / contact details

filmclub There seems to be a plethora of sequels hitting cinemas this month with ‘Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted’, ‘Paranormal Activity 4’ (19th) and Silent Hill: Revelation (31st). Talking of Halloween, you can catch Stanley Kubrick’s Stephen King baiting classic ‘The Shining’ when it gets a re-release at the end of the month or camp it up with the magnificent ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ (26th). Both deserve a cinema outing. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk

Bond Is 50 It seems hard to believe but October 5th marks the fiftieth anniversary of everyone’s favourite secret agent, James Bond’s screen debut in ‘Dr No’. It’s been a long journey since Sean Connery’s inaugural outing in 1962, which has seen six actors play 007 in twenty three films. To celebrate, not only is the latest film ‘Skyfall’ released but there are worldwide events planned including a brand new documentary film. ‘Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007’ is directed by Stevan Riley (‘Fire In Babylon’) and focuses on the three men responsible for the longest running film

franchise in cinema history producers Albert R. Broccoli, Harry Saltzman and author Ian Fleming. Brighton celebrates with an event at the Duke of York’s on the 7th. ‘Bond On The Big Screen: 50 Years in the Secret Service’ includes montages from the films alongside a panel of special guests including associate producer of ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ and ‘Moonraker’, William P Cartlidge, Paul Inglis, the art director of the last two outings, costume designer Lindy Hemming and legendary stuntman Vic Armstrong. 4th, In Cinemas Liam Neeson returns as CIA operative Bryan Mills in this thriller co written by Luc (Leon) Besson. In the first film his daughter was kidnapped but, in a fresh spin, it is Mills himself who is kidnapped along with his wife (Famke Janssen) as vengeance for the death of the previous kidnappers. If you enjoyed the first outing then there’s plenty to look forward to.

Beasts Of The Southern Wild 19th, In Cinemas As the ice caps melt and flood her ramshackle bayou community, threatening to unleash ancient beasts, six year old Hushpuppy (Quvenzhane Wallis) must learn the ways of courage and love. A winner at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and based on a one act play by Lucy Alibar (who also cameos), this looks like a magical adventure with a superb lead performance.

Frankenweenie 17th, In Cinemas This stop-motion tale is a remake of director Tim Burton’s short film that was made twenty eight years ago. Young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his dog Sparky back from the dead with monstrous results. Featuring a voice cast that includes Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Landau and Christopher Lee this looks like ghoulish fun for all the family delivered in Burton’s inimitable style.

Skyfall 26th, In Cinemas Daniel Craig returns for his long awaited third outing for national treasure, James Bond 007, in the twenty third film in the franchise. ‘Skyfall’ sees Judi Dench’s M testing his loyalty as MI6 comes under attack. With Q and Miss Moneypenny finally returning, (although both have been recast) along with a promise of more gadgets, this is the film that I’ve been eagerly anticipating all year.

health&lifestyle b&halbion ?The Seagulls have had a fantastic start to the season, and supporters have already witnessed some outstanding performances at the Amex with record crowds attending home matches. If you are an Albion fan or just a visitor to the city there is plenty to do on a non-matchday, including visiting Dick’s Bar and coffee shop, taking a tour or booking a Sunday lunch in one of our stunning hospitality lounges. Check out www.seagulls.co.uk for more information. Paul Rogers, of Commercial Services Kairen Kemp:Head lifestyle@whatsonguide.co.uk

Shirt Amnesty The club has launched a shirt amnesty which will give supporters the opportunity to purchase a half-price under-10s Albion shirt. Many football fans buy replica shirts at a young age but when they inevitably grow out of the shirts they are either given away or left to collect dust in the closet. Albion are asking you to hand those old shirts over to the club, regardless of size, age or even the club they represent and in return we’ll offer you 50 per cent off a brand new Albion under-10s shirt.

The variety of shirts collected by the club will be donated to Albion in the Community’s charity shop Sports Dreams and sent around the world to the underprivileged players involved in AITC’s global projects. Shirts can be swapped at the Seagulls Superstore, located at the Amex, or the Seagulls Store in Queens Road, Brighton until Saturday 17th November, excluding matchdays. Please note, only under-10s Albion shirts are included in this 50 per cent offer and please seek the owner’s permission before donating any shirt. For full terms and conditions please see www.seagulls.co.uk.

barlife As we move into Autumn it can take a bit of effort to get out and about in our leaf strewn streets. A brand new pub will work wonders. Anyone entering or leaving the centre of Brighton by the London or Lewes Roads cannot fail to have noticed the shining star risen from the ashes of the derelict Barfly in Gloucester Place. It’s called The North Laine and I’ll meet you there! Kairen Kemp: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk

The North Laine Gloucester Place There’s been a gradual transformation taking place at the prominent building that was for many years the Gloucester Nightclub and more recently the Barfly. As the bricks and boards are removed to reveal beautifully intricate bay windows, passers-by get a glimpse of how this historic former hotel must have once looked. Laying derelict since Barfly’s departure in 2009, the nightclub has found its way back to previous owners Drinkinbrighton who have decided to treat this fine old building to a very special refit. Now The Gloucester has reopened as a magnificent public house, serving the North Laine area and embracing the counter-cultural and community ethos of Brighton’s most colourful and independent quarter. In honour of its location

26

what’sonoct12

and in recognition of its new role, the pub is renamed The North Laine. In line with the alternative commercialism made famous in the boutiques and cafés of this vibrant area of the city, the pub will brew its own beer. As a temple to the worship of cask ale and continuing a brewing heritage that once saw ten sizable breweries operating in Brighton, the pub contains a state-of-the-art microbrewery and is producing a variety of cask ales for its customers, including the ever popular Laine’s Best. This is a big commitment from Drinkinbrighton and a regeneration project which it hopes will excite the city and be deemed sympathetic to its location at the southern gateway to the North Laine. drinkinbrighton.co.uk

livemusic October is now upon us. Scarves, wind in the tumbling leaves, pumpkins, evening strolls to pubs with roaring fires and good hearty music for your soul. There’s plenty of variety this month, with injured fowl, ‘20s’ swing, power metal, post-jazz and public enemies. It’s all here for you; you’ve just got to listen to me to guide you through it! So wrap up tight, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

Dan Le Sac Mon 1st, Coalition You’ve probably heard his deck dealings with collaborator Scroobius Pip before, but Dan Le Sac is heading down to get you bouncing following the release of his solo debut album. Mixing hip-hop, electronica and pop into a heady mix of catchy tracks, be prepared for an evening that tickles your toes and trains your mushy brain. In essence, a DJ with a heart. danlesac.co.uk

Two Wounded Birds Wed 3rd, Green Door Store You know what they say about killing two birds with one stone? Well this is what happens when you do it wrong, you cold-hearted swine. The young Margate quartet are of the surf-rock persuasion, so expect sun-kissed riffs and a lofty air of apathetic cool. With a hotly-anticipated debut album to tour, catch them before they drift off into the sunset. facebook.com/twowoundedbirds

White Mink Electro Swing Speakeasy Fri 5th, The Old Market Well now, I do declare that White Mink are bringing the party to The Old Market in the most fashionable way possible. If you’re intrigued by the swing and style of the ‘20s and ‘30s, join in as it’s brought into the 21st Century with a twist. Get on your gladrags, find a partner, and dance till sunrise. whitemink.co.uk 30

Tracer

livemusic

Sun 7th, The Haunt Tracer only just finished a UK tour in April, but they’re hungry for more success here, and I guess you guys are too if they’re coming back so soon. The Australian lads wear their influences on their sleeve with rock riffs tinged with grunge and big noise in general. They’ll blow your heads off The Haunt so get down and mosh with gleeful abandon. tracer-band.com

Portico Quartet Wed 17th, Concorde 2 If you like something that’s a little different, then I recommend Portico Quartet. Unsurprisingly, they are indeed a quartet, but that’s the only predictable thing about them. A gloriously odd mixture of jazz, pop, indie, the South London outfit have a truly universal following. Expect the unexpected when they blast out their goodness. Don’t be afraid of jazz - it’s coming for you. porticoquartet.com

Gemma Hayes Sun 21st, Komedia Now here’s somebody who you should be listening to in future. Gemma Hayes is a true Irish talent, and she’ll be back with new material to complement an impressive back catalogue that features a Mercurynominated album no less. Hayes pack a wonderful voice that comes highly recommended from fans and critics alike, and it’s likely to be an intimate and awe-inspiring show at Komedia. gemmahayes.com

Public Enemy Mon 29th, Brighton Dome What can you say about Public Enemy that hasn’t already been said before? Not a lot, but here’s your chance to see the hip-hop group that changed their musical landscape and the world around them. With revolutionary lyrics about the problems facing black Americans combined with great beats - one of which featured on Paralympics promos recently - listen up to true greats. publicenemy.com

clublife

clublife It’s the time of year when thousands of people make Brighton their base for the foreseeable future. For those who are new to the city, welcome. You are about to experience a thriving club scene that caters to every musical taste possible and, to make it easier, allow me to point you in the direction of a few nights worth checking out and also a couple of essential events. Enjoy. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

Big T Presents Strictly Reggae Mondays, The Volks In an age of dubstep and drum and bass nights, reggae is often overlooked but its influence is felt in almost all electronic music. Strictly Reggae has been going for over ten years and more popular than ever – that’s going some on a Monday night. A variety of selectors spin tunes that do exactly what they say on the tin. volksclub.co.uk

Guerilla Rocks Tuesdays, Audio Since time began, your regular fix of weekday loud rock and metal mayhem has always been found at the Pav Tav but in a shock decision the Guerilla Rocks guys have found a new home on the seafront. Fear not though as they promise the usual mix of tunes from Slayer to The Prodigy, Nirvana to Blink 182 and the usual ridiculously cheap drink prices. audiobrighton.com

Stay Beautiful Sat 6th. Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Since its Brighton rebirth last year Stay Beautiful has become one of the city’s most celebrated club nights. Simon Price (Spellbound) and David Ryder Prangley (Rachel Stamp) play a mix of dirty sleazy glam and glitter rock. From Suede to Bowie, Hole to Guns N Roses and a smattering of special guests this is a night worth getting dressed up for. staybeautifulclub.co.uk 36

Why?

clublife

Mon 8th, The Old Market WHY? is a band who’ve shared a whole lot of past together. Yoni Wolf founded the project in 1998 but it all came together across 2008 and 2009 with a pair of oddly engrossing albums, the tightly rhythmic ‘Alopecia’ and its quieter cousin ‘Eskimo Snow’. For die-hard fans of left-field, idiosyncratic, emotionally and intellectually absorbing indiehip-hop, this will be an absolute must see. oneinchbadge.com

Submotion Orchestra Sat 13th, Concorde 2 The seven piece project combine deep bass-driven grooves and dense textures with their progressive live dub step sound and have previously had two sell out UK tours, as well as venturing into Europe. They are supported by Belgian born Alix Depauw, the face behind production moniker Alix Perez and now regarded as one of the most ground-breaking and innovative producer-DJs of his generation. submotion.co.uk

Arp101 X Elliot Yorke EP Launch Wed 17th, Green Door Store This event to celebrate the second birthday of the Donky Pitch label and the release of a 12” features Arp101 and Elliot Yorke. ARP 101 makes the kind of heavy, colour filled cosmic boom bap that is totally at home on the donky dancefloor. Yorke brings a unique take on rap beat instrumentals and fully fledged club bangers. donkypitch.com

Spellbound Sat 20th, Komedia The Spellbound juggernaut keeps on rolling, carrying the alternative eighties torch steadily onwards. DJs Simon Price and Cherry Foxxx play a mix of all things that were musically good about the decade (yes there were quite a few). Forget Wham and Madonna and think The Cure, The Cult and The Specials. Whether reliving your youth or just discovering the music it’s an essential night out. facebook.com/spellboundbrighton
