futureevents For me, summer has passed, but that is by no means a bad thing, not at all. For me there are shows coming up in Brighton that are so exciting I could have kissed summer goodbye a long time ago. Hip-hop, pop and electro-psychedelic rock cover the musical offerings coming up whilst a comedy festival, witches and a life in films covers the rest. Goodbye summer, hello autumn and winter! Tom Hasson: future@whatsonguide.co.uk

Gorrid the Horrid & The Missing Ingredient Thurs 27th, Komedia Just in time for October’s half term, Gorrid the Horrid and the Missing Ingredient is sure to delight children who come to the Komedia to see it. The show, from Al Start and Nicola Bloom follows Gorrid as she discovers the mystery ingredient for making the perfect witchy-poo feast. Odd as might sound, kids will absolutely love it. komedia.co.uk/brighton

WHAT’S ON GUIDE BRIGHTON & HOVE Erasure

futureevents

Fri 4th Nov, Brighton Dome In 1988, new wave duo Erasure released what is one of my all time 80s tracks; ‘A Little Respect’. Despite having released all manner of other brilliant synthpop singles during their career, they will always be remembered for that song and that is why I’ll be right down the front for this November show, singing my heart out – and so should you. brightondome.org

Death In Vegas Sun 11th Dec, Concorde 2 Electro-psychedelic rock band Death in Vegas have been together for over 15 years and for every one of those years they have influenced all manner of artists crossing genres, from krautrock to dub. Playing the Concorde 2 in December, the group will bring their industrial strength electronica to Brighton for what is sure to be a spectacular show of big beat rock’n’roll. concorde2.co.uk

Example Wed 14th Dec, Brighton Centre Elliot Gleave, better known by his moniker Example will be paying Brighton a visit in December. His third album, Playing In The Shadows, released this month is already generating a huge amount of hype, especially with single ‘Changed The Way You Kiss Me’ already receiving plenty of airplay. This looks set to be yet another great big party in the Brighton Centre! brightoncentre.co.uk

Spamalot Thurs 15th Dec - Sat 14th Jan 2012, Theatre Royal Based on Monty Python and the Holy Grain, the Python’s utterly hilarious 1975 film, the stage show has kept audiences roaring with laughter for over half a decade. Written by Eric Idle and John Du Prez, starring Marcus Brigstocke as King Arthur and Todd Carty as Patsy, they will undoubtedly have Brighton giggling away every single night. atgtickets.com/Theatre-Royal-Brighton

septfocus Despite hunting through listings, scouring the web and leafing through numerous flyers to pick what to write about each month, there are often events I miss that I subsequently wish I’d featured but just didn’t hear about them in time. So if you have something going on that you think might be suitable then email me, I don’t bite. Just make sure you give me a few weeks notice, ok? Greg Furlong: focus@whatsonguide.co.uk

Amanda Fucking Palmer Thu 1st, Concorde 2 Amanda Palmer made her name as the fiery front woman of the hugely successful punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls. Her 2008 Ben Folds produced solo album was met with critical acclaim, while this year’s follow-up, Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under, has received praise across the board. Her live shows are legendary, so this should be a spectacle not to be missed. concorde2.co.uk

Bleeding Hearts Club Mon 5th, The Prince Albert Resident at the Prince Albert for the last 8 years, the Bleeding Hearts Club is an intimate night of live performances for people who like to listen to rather than talk through the music. With short sets from three to four bands that tend to lean more towards melancholia than jubilation it sounds like the prefect option for Monday night entertainment. bleedingheartrecordings.com

National Speed Trials Sat 10th, Madeira Drive Dating back to 1905, this is Madeira Drive’s original motoring event. It set the precedent for all the rest and although there are plenty of classic motors to see it’s really all about speed, ripping up the quarter mile of seafront as fast as possible. With a variety of cars and bikes taking part from all eras it’s a petrol head’s paradise. brightonandhovemotorclub.co.uk 6

shakedown Being set in a city famed for its musical heritage and storming nightlife, it should come as no surprise that Shakedown will showcase some stellar local artists alongside its eclectic range of international talent. The Stanmer Park festival will champion a uniquely Brighton line-up on the day; from dance DJs to indie four-pieces and everything in between. Our city will bring the creme-de-la-creme of home grown talent to the mix. editorial@whatsonguide.co.uk

Prok & Fitch Ben Prok and James Fitch are known as the hottest DJ/producer pairing in house music. After meeting in Brighton’s BPM record store, Prok and Fitch joined forces to create top-quality house music. Their Floorplay parties became one of the city’s definitive club-nights and have since gone worldwide, playing to packed-out dance floors from London to Dubai. After storming Ibiza and Brazil, they’re sure bring the sun to Shakedown. myspace.com/prokfitch

Thomas Gandey

Techno-mastermind Thomas Gandey is progressing his already inimitable disco sound. Since being signed onto FatBoy Slim’s Southern Fried label under his Cagedbaby alias, Gandey has superseded technological boundaries and plans to bring his latest mix of tech-house, deep techno and disco to Shakedown. A far cry from his Brighton roots, Gandey now holds residencies in Ibiza and Barcelona whilst touring internationally; Shakedown will be the perfect welcome home party! thomasgandey.com

shakedown

Brighton stalwarts the Freemasons require little introduction – but let’s try! Consisting of Russell Small (one half of Phats & Small) and James Wiltshire, the producer duo have gone worldwide, working with acts such as Beyonce and Shakira. Their number one hit ‘Uninvited’ demonstrated that their own tracks were just as ready to dominate the charts. Shakedown provides the perfect platform for them to showcase their eclectic mix of all things Freemasons’. myspace.com/freemasons

Rubylux Starting with the original idea of orchestrating fully equipped street gigs 3 years ago, Rubylux’s authentic rock has been propelled to the forefront of the underground music scene. They are one of a rare few western bands to be able to claim to have toured in Vietnam and continue to grow internationally. Used to playing until the police shut them down, Rubylux’s anthemic performances continue to break the rules. rubylux.net

Kovak Kovak’s colourful vintage synth-infused electo-pop has been gaining ground in Brighton for quite some time. Their dancey pop sets have sent them to Canada for this year’s North X Northeast festival and into the arms of Gary Numan’s producer Andy Grey, to record their second album in a 15th century haunted house. You are bound to be nostalgically delighted by Kovak’s old school pop at this year’s Shakedown. kovak.co.uk

Watts The SP Hailed as “Primal Scream and Kasabian’s lovechild” by Norman Cook, Watts The SP are hard to pigeonhole. Their charisma shines through addictively melodic tracks and after a few years of restructuring and evolution the duo have established their eclectic ‘dance-floor rock and roll’ sound. As mainstage openers on the day, and hot on the heels of recent London gigs, Watts The SP will be one act not to be missed! wattsthesp.com

filmclub Out on DVD on the 5th, ‘As Blood Runs Deep’ is a crime drama in the tradition of ‘No Country for Old Men’ and ‘Mystic River’. Terminator 3’s Nick Stahl plays a small town detective who is called in to solve a juvenile homicide that occurred during a home burglary in the affluent town of Hilliard. As usual, things aren’t always what they seem and some crimes find their criminals. Martin Lampitt: cinema@whatsonguide.co.uk

My Best Enemy Fri 12th, On DVD In 1930’s Vienna, Victor Kaufmann (Moritz Bleibtreu), the son of a Jewish art dealer, and Rudi Smekal (Georg Friendrich), the son of the family’s housekeeper, are best friends. One night Victor reveals to his friend a very rare Michelangelo drawing that is in his family’s possession. As war breaks out and Rudi becomes an SS officer he betrays his friend, arrests the family and seizes the treasure. Years later, when it is discovered the drawing is a fake, the race is on

to find the real one and swing the war in Germany’s favour. I must admit to not being a huge fan of World War Two films, due to over exposure as a child, but found this darkly comic tale to be both gripping and refreshing. The performances are, without exception, excellent and, even though the denouement is about as hard to spot as a neon storm trooper in a coal bunker, it is to director Wolfgang Murnberger’s credit that he keeps the film both engrossing and surprising. An unexpected treat.

Fri 2nd, In Cinemas A remake of the much loved 1985 comedy horror film in which a teenager suspects his neighbour is a vampire. David Tennant takes over the role of vampire hunter Peter Vincent, a late night TV host originally played by Roddy McDowell and Colin Farrell is the object of their obsession. If it follows the tone of the original this could be a lot of fun.

The Troll Hunter Fri 9th, In Cinemas This Norwegian fantasy horror film takes the form of a Blair Witch style fake documentary and features a cast of unknown actors alongside some of Norway’s best known comedians including Otto Jespensen. Norwegian critics seemed to like it and Harry Potter director Chris Columbus’ production company optioned a remake on the day of its US release so best see it before it gets ruined.

You Instead Fri 16th, In Cinemas Shot at T in the Park in the summer of 2010 this is a rock ‘n’ roll comedy set against the backdrop of Scotland’s leading music festival. Arriving for his gig, Adam (Luke Treadaway) is handcuffed to punky girl-band leader Morello (Natalia Tena). Initial frustration gives way to grudging acceptance and then the stirring of genuine feelings over the next 24 hours of the festival.

La Piscine Fri 30th, In Cinemas This re-mastered and re-released sensual thriller is set in a magnificent villa near St. Tropez, where Jean-Paul (Alain Delon) and Marianne (Romy Schneider) are spending a happy summer holiday. Their only concern is to gratify their mutual passion - until the day when Marianne invites her former lover Harry (Maurice Ronet) and his beautiful daughter Penelope (Jane Birkin) to spend a few days with them.

barlife I always love things that remind me of the good old days. The new trend for bars to incorporate venues within their confines is just that kind of thing I’m thinking of buddy. No, no, no. Not a pub that sticks a noisy bunch of gits in the corner at inopportune moments. I’m talking about bars that have a proper stage area and that - like back in the day, child. Danny Bowman: bars@whatsonguide.co.uk

The Hydrant 75 London Road, 01273 608313 The ultimate pub-cum-venue, with a large stage area downstairs and function room/gig hall upstairs. You also have a pool table, new food menu, free wifi, student discount 5-8 Monday – Friday and a decked beer garden out back with BBQ facilities. This was also the place where I discovered Agwa Bombs at £3.50 and you can double up on your shots for £1.

The Green Door Store Trafalgar Arches, Lower Goods Yard, 07894 267053 Reminds me of the legendary Happy Jacks in London Bridge all them years ago. Extremely friendly staff who offered me a free cookie with my drink. No-nonsense layout dedicated to only two things, drink and gigs. The décor is art house with trophy antlers and a big old Woolworth’s sign. It’s a great place for an afternoon drink.

The Hobgoblin 31 York Place, 01273 682933 They do live music on the old stage every Thursday and have shifted the main venue to the large function room upstairs and some good acts are queuing up to play. They have completely rebuilt the beer garden installing fancy wooden booths in which you can govern the heating yourself. Serves a fine Tex Mex menu; reasonably priced at around £8 a plate. 22

48 Trafalgar Street, 01273 730499 If you’ve been to a gig in Brighton, you’ve probably been to one at the Prince Albert. Now, though they have a great new menu that is really worth a try even though the BBQ Shack has moved on. The venue is a simple, roomy space upstairs where you’ll see alt/rock/hardcore bands play. Downstairs they have a beer garden out back.

The Brunswick 1 Holland Road, 01273 733984 The Brunswick excels at providing entertainment. You can see anything from comedy to rock bands to some really quite high-brow stuff. They offer an extensive menu, reasonably priced at around the £7 and an excellent Sunday Roast. They have a purpose built venue directly to the right of the bar as well as function rooms upstairs. Outside is their famous beer garden.

The Greys 105 Southover Street, 01273 680734 Brighton’s Belgian beer pub also offers a fine line in Americana gigs and events. From bluegrass to Nashville sounds and anything in between every Monday night. Smack bang in the middle of muesli mountain you can expect this place to be lively all week around. Another music joint with an excellent menu, courtesy of Piglets Pantry, with a 15% early bird special discount.

Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar 9-12 Middle Street, 01273 749465 A brand spanking new bar/venue reborn from one New York’s best loved music bars and second only to CBGBs. The coolest bands from all genres are just aching to play here and this is surely going to be the place to be to experience the latest live acts. Happy Hour is 5-8 every day with pints from £2.40 and G&Ts £2.40.

livemusic So, as we lose the summer sun (well, what was left of it anyway) to the brisker temperatures of autumn, there’ll still be plenty of live music to keep you warm in September’s cold embrace. Whether you’re after punk cabaret, dub gospel, funk orchestras (or perhaps just a good old-fashioned pop punk power band), Brighton can serve you up a warm slice of musical pie. Mmm mmm, that tastes good. Thomas Doyle: live@whatsonguide.co.uk

Machinedrum Fri 2nd, Concorde 2 If you like your electro with a splash of heart and intelligence, then be sure to check out a special free show from Machinedrum this month. Travis Stewart has been priased by fans and critics for his ability to blend genres such as acoustic and dubstep, and after a busy year, the ‘electro Renaissance man’ is ready to hit Brighton. And did we mention it’s free? machinedrum.net

Skip ‘Little Axe’ McDonald Fri 9th, Prince Albert Having played with the likes of James Brown, Skip (or Little Axe) McDonald knows a thing or two about the blues. Skip has returned to the Ohio blues he learned from his father, and the stripped-down nature of his work should combine perfectly with the sweltering atmosphere of the Albert. If you like a little ‘Dub Gospel’, come and worship Skip. little-axe.com

Treetop Flyers Thurs 15th, The Green Door Store After a successful stint at Glastonbury, Treetop Flyers are ready to kick on and spring into action this autumn. Gorgeous vocals harmonies, lilting guitars and general warmth await those who really should venture out and see these guys before they inevitably start to play at places that you can’t afford to get in to; think Paolo Nutini with a (slight) hangover. treetopflyers.co.uk 30

The Wonder Years

livemusic

Sat 17th, Audio Following a successful start to the year on the Kerrang! Tour, The Wonder Years are looking to cap off 2011 in style with a UK headline tour, and Audio seems the perfect place for their pop punk persuasions. With new work inspired by legend Allen Ginsberg, expect melodic riffs with intelligence behind them; best leave your reading specs out of the mosh pit though. myspace.com/thewonderyears

Klumzy Tung, Mr.Dero & Farina Miss Wed 21st, Komedia The name may be a tad ‘Klumzy’ (sorry), but Tung’s flow is anything but. With tracks featuring on the likes of Skins, Tung and his cohorts are on to big things. The experimental troupe have a playful musical style underpinned by dexterous vocal work on tracks like ‘Headscrews’, so you’re in store for an rewarding evening with Klumzy and Co. myspace.com/klumzytung

Kalakuta Millionaires Fri 30th, The Brunswick Kalakuta Millionaires can only be what is described on their website as a ‘Afro Latino Funk Orchestra’, and they should bring the house down at the Brunswick. Fusing more musical styles than I could possibly try to learn how to say in my lifetime, this band knows how to whip up a crowd, so if you fancy dancing with abandon, you know where to go. myspace.com/kalakutamillionaires

Bombay Bicycle Club Fri 30th, Dome Concert Hall With third LP A Different Kind of Fix set to be released and following critical acclaim from their previous two offerings, youngsters Bombay Bicycle Club are just the type of band you’d love to hate, but can’t help falling in love with. After seeing these guys perform their folk-tinged melancholic/euphoric indie rock at Benicassim, I urge you not to miss out. bombaybicycleclubmusic.com

clublife As the nights draw in again the interesting people return to our fair city. Paradox is a producer from the UK who has in recent years championed a new sub-genre of drum & bass known as drumfunk. This focuses on finding obscure breakbeats or re-sampling much used drum & bass breaks and transforming them into constantly shifting drum patterns. He makes a rare appearance at The Komedia on Friday 23rd. DJ Lamp: club@whatsonguide.co.uk

Live & Unleashed Sat 3rd, Digital Live & Unleashed will be a cutting edge club music fuelled platform to give the talented people of Brighton the chance to shine - a big party atmosphere with plenty of surprises. Pop Kraft presents Kiss Kraft Sat 3rd, Proud Brighton Ballroom There’s a proper Poodle Rock party going off in Kemp Town tonight with your debauched hosts Boogaloo Stu, Dolly Rocket, The Size Zero Albino, Darran Duran and very special guests. There’s more entertainment than you can possibly handle including licensed kissing booths, a plasticine figurine party, cabaret capers, erotic art and a live performance from the legendary PISS. Phew. pop-kraft.co.uk

CBGBs Sat 3rd, Komedia New York’s CBGB (Country, Blue Grass and Blues) opened in 1973 and was intended to feature the music that it was named after. This changed when it became a showcase for punk and new wave bands like the Ramones, Talking Heads and Blondie. It closed in 2006 but the music lives on through this night that only plays music from bands that have played there. komedia.co.uk/brighton 38
